Longtime Fair concessionaire hits on new concept BY DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR

When the Great Minnesota Get-Together opens Aug. 24, a new shop-eat-sip area with a White Bear connection will welcome Fair goers. Called the Veranda, the area is on the west side of the Grandstand’s upper level. It features vendors who showcase vintage, up-cycled handmade and made-in-Minnesota goods. One of those vendors is a White Bear Lake couple who consider themselves true foodies.

Bryan Enloe has been selling pizzas at fairs and carnivals since he was 14. When he married Jennie in 2012, she pitched right in, hitting the road with the pizza wagon during fair season. Now the two are ditching the pizza for a new concept at the State Fair: The Hideaway Speakeasy. “It has a prohibition-era theme,” explained Jennie. Not your traditional Fair food, menu items have names like The Swing-Dancer, The Goodfella and The Bootlegger. There

are shareables like Mobster’s Caviar, Bugsy’s Berry & Cheese Plate and Capone’s Crostini, as well as craft beer and Minnesota wine. A Specialty Hooch called Cotton Candy Bubble Trouble is sparkling wine with fresh spun pink cotton candy. Jennie thought they needed something fun for the dames. They had to relinquish the pizza stand to get the restaurant. Minnesota State Fair rules say you can’t have two, Bryan said. SEE THE HIDEAWAY, PAGE 8A

Election for School Board members, levy renewal announced BY SARA MARIE MOORE VADNAIS HEIGHTS EDITOR

WHITE BEAR LAKE — Four seats are up for election this fall on the White Bear Lake Area Schools Board. Two current members are on the ballot — Kim Chapman and Don Mullin. Two more seats will open up due to the retirements of Chair Janet Newberg and Vice Chair George Kimball. New candidates are Deborah Beloyed, Jessica Ellison, Jill Engwer and Angela Thompson. Also on the ballot will be a request for a referendum levy renewal for the next 10 years. The total levy in 2019 would be about $14.3 million, or about $1,500 per pupil, the same pupil amount as the current levy. The current operating levy is annually adjusted by an inflation factor as provided by the Minnesota Department of Education; the proposed operating levy would maintain that annual adjustment. The 2017 existing levy is $13.7 million and will be $14.1 million in 2018.

The renewal would have no negative tax impact, said Tim Wald, assistant superintendent for finance and operations. In fact, due to the current trend of increasing property values and increasing enrollment, property owners would actually see a slight decrease in taxes for first year of the renewed referendum levy, said Superintendent Wayne Kazmierczak. For example, in 2018 a $250,000 home would pay an estimated $443. If the levy is renewed by voters, the same home would be expected to pay $437 in 2019. This is due to projected enrollment growth being spread out over projected property value growth, Kazmierczak explained. “We are not necessarily touting that it is a tax decrease, we are just saying there is no increase in taxes as a result,” Kazmierczak said. “We are renewing an existing levy. We are not seeking new money.” The levy is currently 15 percent of the district’s budget. SEE SCHOOL BOARD, PAGE 8A
