New middle school principal announced
New bear in town
Dave Parsons carves into the remaining portion of a maple tree in Bruce and Renee Stewart’s front yard on the south side of White Bear Lake Friday, Aug. 12. The couple — who had a sentimental attachment to the tree they planted in 1987 — enlisted the services of the chain saw artist after finding out it needed to be cut down. Earlier this month, Parsons took third place at the U.S. Open Chainsaw Sculpture Championship.

WHITE BEAR LAKE – New Central Middle School principal Timothy Schochenmaier draws on his experience as a dad in his career as a school leader. Schochenmaier has four children, which range in age from two to high school. “I feel I have a very common sense perspective for kids just having been a dad with a wide range of ages for my own kids,” Schochenmaier said, who has been the principal at Otter Lake Elementary for two years. Prior to that, he was a principal at elementary schools in Big Lake and Mora. He currently lives in New Brighton. “This will be my eighth year as an administrator at a building,” he said. “This will be my first time as a middle school principal.” Prior to being a principal, Schochenmaier was a first-grade teacher in Roseville. Schochenmaier is excited to take his education experience and move it to “tweeners.” “My middle son is an eighth grader,” he said. “One thing I really love about kids growing up is in the middle years they are finding themselves. … I think it takes a very special person to be able to give middles school age students the rope they need to be able to find themselves yet be that rock they can count on each day.” Schochenmaier's philosophy includes recognizing the middle school years as formative. “Kids need to be able to make mistakes to be able to find themselves,” he said. Union Cemetery holds heaps of history BY NOOR QUREISHY PRESS INTERN
What does the last surviving member of the Grand Army of the Republic from the Civil War, a creator of record-winning sailboats, and a pioneer in special education have in common? They were all early citizens of White Bear Lake, now residing in Union Cemetery. Union Cemetery, located west of the Ramaley Park area, was established on June 27, 1877, by William W. Webber, who maintained the records with his son until the early 20th century. In the mid-20th century, they realized more space was needed and land along the cemetery's northern border was purchased, adding 2,500 more graves. Burial plots are still available today thanks to this foresight. On Memorial Day, a short program is held in Union Cemetery during the city-wide Memorial
Day parade. Barry Hendricks, a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) said that the program is held at Union Cemetery because of the “the area's rich history that goes back to the Civil War.” The many leaders and visionaries residing in Union Cemetery built the very foundation of White Bear Lake as a town and as a community.
Community leaders Daniel Getty, who moved to White Bear Lake in the early 1860s, opened the first general store in the town in 1870, called Daniel Getty & Co. Store. Getty relocated the post office into his general store when he took over as postmaster in 1871. The new building he built five years later, on the corner of 3rd and Clark street, has served as the location for a public library, newsNOOR QUREISHY | PRESS PUBLICATIONS
