WHITE BEAR LAKE – District 624 students scored above state averages in math, science and reading on state standardized tests this spring. Math test scores for all grades in White Bear Lake Area Schools jumped from 65 percent proficiency in 2015 to 66 percent proficiency in 2016. Math proficiency scores for White Bear Lake were highest in the last five years in 2012, at 71 percent. The state average proficiency in 2016 for math was 59 percent, a decrease from 60 in 2015. White Bear Lake City Councilman Dan Jones and his wife Sallie received a phone call the night of July 30 no parents wants. Their daughter Kayla had been hit by a pickup truck crossing a busy street in Duluth and suffered a traumatic brain injury. It was 9:55 p.m. when they got the news. “We were out the door by 10 p.m.,” Jones said. Kayla, 19, was crossing a street with a girlfriend when she was struck. Her friend was walking ahead of her and doesn’t know what happened; she just heard the sound and saw Kayla land in the street. No alcohol was involved in the accident, Jones noted. He has chosen not to look at the police report but is relieved alcohol played no role. “Once I found that out, I was OK. I would have been going down that angry road; none of that was wasted energy.” Her injuries are bad. There is kidney and spleen damage and neck fractures. Two arteries in her neck were damaged. All those would be significant on their own, her dad said, but neurosurgeons are focused on her brain. “That is the biggest injury. The best news (Aug. 2) was when the doctor said the injuries are not affecting her breathing or important functions. They are choosing to let her body deal with those.” Surgeons removed a 4x7 inch piece of skull to SEE ACCIDENT, PAGE 9A
