Live music fans lose a downtown venue BY DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR
Wednesday night fans of the John Evans/Dan Perry duo at The Station Pub in White Bear Lake have one last chance to hear their music. The restaurant and event center is under new management effective end of July and live music is not part of the plan, according to Evans, who got the news last week. “I sold a business too, so I understand,” said the former owner of Evans Music. “They’ve made business decisions and they need time to work things out under their own model.” Evans wants to thank Jake and Kate McKeague for “putting their money where their mouth was in terms of the importance of music in this community.” The McKeagues are transitioning out of the business, according to Jake, who co-founded the restaurant and bar in 2007 with Brian Farrell. “We haven’t sold the business. Kate and I just aren’t going to be involved anymore and it will be under new management.” Farrell, who owns the building, remains part owner of the business that will include his brother and that brother’s brother-in-law, Brian Johnson. “Kate and I are training in a new manager (Johnson) who will eventually become a partner,” McKeague said. “He is going a different direction with the restaurant. As a result, live music is done at the end of this month.” Although surprised at the announcement, Evans is grateful to The Station for a “wonderful run” the

Commissioners find dog beach busy on steamy night BY DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR
WHITE BEAR LAKE — Zoey the labrador wants the city to know she never meets unfriendly playmates at the dog beach and her owner makes sure she doesn’t use the lake or surrounding area for a “bathroom.” “I hope I can continue to play there with my doggie friends,” Zoey wrote in an email to Public Works Director Mark Burch and members of the Parks Commission. Ever since complaints were voiced at City Hall, emails to Burch have poured in regarding the dog park. Most offer solutions that are creative and realistic about use of the beach for canines, he said. One of those emails was from Zoey’s owner, Frances Kaliszewski, who moved to a senior citizen complex with no access to a lake. When Kaliszewski discov-
ered the designated “doggie beach,” they started making daily car trips for play time. At a meeting July 21 with parks commissioners, Burch went over some of the issues they should consider regarding the park, like tags (user fees), capacity, signage and location. The City Council had asked the advisory board to make a recommendation as to changes, if any, that should be made in response to noise and off-leash complaints by several Lake Avenue residents. Commissioners met at Matoska Park for a first-hand look. Burch and Parks Division employee Mike Natterstad explained to the members that designated areas at the beach shifted as the water receded and land was lost. Then the cattails moved in, crowding the area even more. One plan, they said, is to apply for a Department of SEE PARK COMMISSION, PAGE 8A
