City parks repeatedly hit by vandals BY DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR

WHITE BEAR LAKE — Park users who fi nd the public restrooms closed can blame vandals. There has been more vandalism this year at public parks than ever before in Mark Burch’s nearly 30 years as Public Works director. “Vandals have been very destructive,” Burch said. “It drives us crazy because it’s senseless, it’s expensive to repair and it takes a lot of time to clean this stuff up. Contractors have to be hired to come in for some of the repairs and that gets expensive.” The person(s) doing the damage seem to keep returning to the same parks. Podvin sees habitual vandalism, according to Burch, and Memorial Beach “has been hammered.”

Among the damage: • Side panels kicked out of the gazebo at Matoska Park at least twice. • The restroom at Memorial Beach “busted up” the day before the Manitou Days dance. Vandals are breaking sinks, countertops and stall partitions. • “Tremendous damage” inside the restrooms, including graffiti sprayed on the walls, at Jack Yost Park and Podvin Park. • Vandalism to the shelter and restrooms at Lakewood Hills Park. City officials are considering surveillance cameras to catch perpetrators in the act. According to Burch, the city is rigorously brainstorming ideas. The fi rst is the purchase of three trail cameras. Public Works is following the SEE VANDALISM, PAGE 9A

Graffiti artists have been leaving their mark in the restrooms at Jack Yost Park. Some work is even signed. The city is brainstorming ways to catch the culprits, including use of cameras.

Sports Center: Second sheet of ice remains hot topic BY DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR

WHITE BEAR LAKE — With the decision a week away on whether to move forward with the Sports Center renovation, much hinges on both the final price tag and a commitment by the city's partner in the project, the White Bear Lake Area Hockey Association (WBLAHA). Early on, the skating community pledged up to $2 million in a 50-50 agreement to renovate the 28-year-old arena. The cost was estimated at $4 million. Those costs, however, have ramped up to $5.1 million, which leaves the $3.1 million balance potentially the city's obligation. And that's for just one sheet of ice. Preparing for the possibility of a second sheet tacks on another $385,000. The new refrigeration room will be bigger if a second sheet is planned, adding $230,000 to the cost estimate. Utilities, an electric panel and demolition of the green house on the property, rented to a White Bear firefighter, make up the remainder of the $385,000 needed. City Council members were told at the July 11 meeting that although there is significant outside interest in planning for a second sheet, staff does not recommend pursuing it due to added cost.

Water walkers reach goal Above: Some of the approximately 100 participants in the Walk for Water begin their 3 mile journey along Lake Avenue in White Bear Lake Saturday, July 15. The goal of the benefit event was to raise $2,500 to help bring clean water to Chub Romdeng School in Cambodia. At right: Elizabeth Birkeland and Sydney Peterson update a sign on display in West Park after finding out they had reached (and exceeded) their monetary goal. This is the second Walk for Water event the Mahtomedi and White Bear Lake Area High School students have organized. Last year they raised more than $1,500 to help drill a well for a primary school in the Ugandan village of Orapado. Find out more about the project at: https://www.h2oforlifeschools.org/sponsors/13
