Lakeshore Players Managing Director Rob Thomas kicked off the groundbreaking celebration, acknowledging a script that will focus on both community and production of great live theater.

Standing center stage next to props comprising a backhoe and construction trailer, Thomas introduced Mayor Jo Emerson, who told those gathered that a group of people determined in 1953 the need for community theater. But that was then and this is now, and today is about the future of arts growth in the city, the mayor said, pointing out the nearby banners hanging from Hwy. 61 light poles designating the Arts District along Long Avenue.

Lakeshore Players Theater has an economic impact of about $1 million on White Bear Lake, according to the mayor.

The new performing arts center will increase that to $1.5 million.

Thomas also introduced two “significant donors” to the capital campaign to build the theater: Si and Vicki Ford, whose gift allowed the purchase of the former Twin City Nursery property, and Paul and Suzanne Hanifl of North Oaks.

WHITE BEAR LAKE – The literature of F. Scott Fitzgerald features extravagant settings such as New York and Paris, but last week Fitzgerald enthusiasts flocked to White Bear Lake to get a feel for the writer’s early life.

Attendees of the 14th annual International Fitzgerald Society conference held in St. Paul attended a historical presentation at Boatworks Commons. Afterward, conference goers were able to hop on a fleet of boats captained by White Bear locals, which toured the lake accompanied by live band music before dropping guests off at the White Bear Yacht Club.

Born in St. Paul, Fitzgerald debuted some of his first plays at the White Bear Yacht Club while he was a student. In 1922, he spent the summer living at the club with wife Zelda and daughter Scottie, until they were reputedly kicked out for rowdy behavior.

Fitzgerald’s story “Winter Dreams” was set in the fictional town of Black Bear Lake. Fitzgerald later called

Summer backpack meals launched

WHITE BEAR LAKE — Through a partnership between three entities, students across the district will be receiving healthy food in their backpacks for summer weekends.

The summer KID Packs will be available at White Bear Lake Area Schools district sites where free summer food service is offered — Birch Lake Elementary, Vadnais Heights Elementary, Central Middle School, White Bear Lake Area High School-South Campus and the Area Learning Center. The meals attempt to reduce the gap for students who receive free or reduced-cost meals during the school year.

The White Bear Lake Area Emergency Food Shelf (WBLAEF) launched KID Packs in the schools in 2013, said food shelf Executive Director Andrea Kish-Bailey. At that time, about 100 packs were given out each week. Now, 400 are given out each week during the school year.

“The need for the program is quite large,” Kish-Bailey remarked. Through a partnership with the Foundation for Essential Needs and Step One Foods, the food shelf plans to hand out 200 packs per week, with three additional healthy items. The summer packs will help bridge the gap during the summer for those who receive them during the school year.

The Foundation for Essential Needs (FFEN) is partnering with the food shelf this summer to pilot a healthy eating, crowd-funded program, said its president, Doug Kohrs. The foundation plans to raise funds to cover the cost of the food in the packs, including three new healthy items developed by Step One Foods.

FFEN has worked on projects with 30 of the 300 food shelves across the state, Kohrs said. It teamed up with the WBLAEF through a connection with an FFEN board member, he noted. Then Step One Foods stepped in through a prior business relationship, he added.

Step One Foods, based in St. Louis Park, develops physician-formulated foods for those struggling with heart disease, said representative Bill Alldredge. To assist FFEN and the food shelf, it developed kid-friendly packaging. Three items, such as a smoothie mix, oatmeal mix or chocolate crunch bar, will be added to the summer KID Packs.

“It really supports our mission as food as medicine,” Alldredge said when asked why his company decided to get involved. FFEN plans to cover the cost of the Step One Foods items and other foods through crowdfunding, Kohrs said. It will be the first time FFEN has launched a crowdfunding campaign for healthy food.

Food shelf board members are hopeful White Bear Lake will be part of that crowdfunding effort.

“We've already got the momentum from the backpack program,” said board member Ken Galloway.

Offering healthy foods is an important goal of the food shelf, Kish-Bailey noted. Through the KID Packs program the food shelf also attempts to make connections with families to invite them into the food shelf to take advantage of its fresh produce and other fresh items.

Transportation is a barrier to people getting to the food shelf, she noted.

This summer, the food shelf is holding mobile markets at several sites, including schools, senior living centers and churches.

Any White Bear Lake or district resident can shop at the food shelf four times a month, Kish-Bailey said.

There is no income requirement; use is based on self-identified need. Once a month, on “bonus Fridays,” people from anywhere can come, she noted.

verywhere I go with my little ball of quills people want to know who she is . . . so I tell them.

Yes, she’s a hedgehog. Her name is Ginger.

She’s blonde — not albino — a recessive gene that makes her quills cinnamon and ginger-colored. Hedgehogs are born in many shades — salt and pepper or chocolate brown are the most common.

No, she doesn’t release her quills like a porcupine. Actually, they are technically spines, not quills. They feel bristly like a hairbrush or beard, but you might get poked if she curls into a ball.

Yes, she might be nervous or Story shy about meeting you, which is why she starts to curl into a ball.

Chaser Or she might be tired. Hedgehogs Sara Marie Moore are nocturnal and she probably ran a few miles on her exercise wheel last night. When she gets up in the late afternoon, it is early morning for her and she sticks out her two-inch long tongue and yawns. If she makes a huffi ng noise, then she is really nervous.

No, it’s not too hard to take care of her. She eats cat food, mealworms, eggs and fruit. She lives in a rabbit hutch inside, which needs to be cleaned often. She uses a litter box, but not 100 percent.

She often has an urge while exercising on her wheel. To give her a bath, I brush her with a toothbrush in warm water with oatmeal soap and coconut oil.

Yes, she was expensive. I got her for $250 from a breeder. I took her home at six weeks old. She is full size at six months. She went through the “terrible twos” when she shed her baby quills and grew in adult quills. It is uncomfortable, like a baby teething. She was grumpy and curled into a ball and made huffing noises more often.

No, she is not a wild animal native to the U.S. She is an African pygmy hedgehog, which was bred for domestication from two types of wild hedgehogs about 30 years ago. She looks and acts differently than wild hedgehogs in Africa, Asia and Europe. She still has some wild nature in her; the more time I spend with her, the tamer she becomes. She loves to snuggle in a blanket.

Yes, she is a great pet — but not for everyone.

She needs a lot of unconditional love, understanding and fortitude. She is near-sighted so she can’t see well what is going on around her, which is why she can be timid. I spend lots of time with her so she gets to know my voice and smell. I pet her from her nose to her back so she knows it is me. But she still huffs and puffs into a spiky ball sometimes.

No, she won’t live long. The lifespan of domesticated hedgehogs is four years. They are susceptible to cancer and a neurological condition called wobbly hedgehog syndrome. They can also get mites or infections. There are vets who treat hedgehogs.

Yes, she is adorable. She slowly pokes out her snout out from her ball of quills as she sniffs the world and uncurls. She explores her surroundings and then finds a cozy place to burrow. If she comes across an interesting smell, she will lick and chew the object, salivate and spread the new smell on her quills, a normal behavior called “anointing.” She is camouflaging herself with the smell, or perhaps wants to perfume herself.

No one really knows why.

Yes, ask me more questions. I love talking about her. She is fascinating — both cuddly and prickly, a pet for those who are intrigued by paradoxes and enjoy an adventurous challenge.

Why we celebrate the Fourth of July

very July 4, citizens across Minnesota and the country celebrate our Independence Day. It is a day well-known for parades, picnics and fi reworks displays, but it is also the day our ancestors stood up for liberty and asserted our position as a free nation. As you celebrate our nation’s birthday, remember the words of the Declaration of Independence: “We hold these Legislator truths to be self-evident, that all men Lingo are created equal, Chuck Wiger that they are endowed by their Creator t with ith certain t i unalienable rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.” — Declaration of Independence, 1776 These were the words of Americans who sought a different style of government than the

The Fourth of July gives us an opportunity to remember the struggles of our nation’s founders and reflect on the values upon which America was founded. But it is important to remember the struggles and triumphs that got us to where we are today all the time, and not just once a year.

Today we don’t need to look very hard to fi nd examples of heroic individuals representing the best of America. After a decade of war, we have hundreds of thousands of veterans who

have risked their lives to defend the freedom written about in the Declaration of Independence.

These men and women carry the same burden on their shoulders as did soldiers during the Revolutionary War—our liberty.

The struggles that America continues to face in the form of inequality and justice for all skin colors are reminders that we cannot rest on our laurels.

The authors of the Declaration of Independence were brave and determined. Now we all must pick up that torch and think about the bigger picture, and the thousands that have fought and died for our freedoms. Let it not be in vain.

While watching fi reworks and enjoying time with friends and family take a moment to consider what brought us to this day of celebration. The Fourth of July is a joyful time, but it is also a time to remember the price that was paid to form and maintain our country.

Playing it safe on the water

I

n the land of 10,000 lakes, we are blessed with an abundance of areas to swim, fish, boat and enjoy the water, especially after a long, cold winter.

Certainly, there is nothing better than a day on the beach or the boat, but not all of those days end accident free. At The Urgency Room we see a variety of injuries from water activities. While many are accidents, others are purely preventable.

Be smart Many of the water-related injuries I see have a common theme: the injured made bad choices. One of the top culprits in that category is alcohol. Too many times we see a boater or angler injured because he or she was drinking too much alcohol and used poor judgement. For so many of the most popular water activities like boating and tubing, you have to be, not only careful, but vigilant. Alcohol lowers our ability to react quickly, judge danger or feel pain and that’s a recipe for disaster especially behind the wheel of any watercraft.

Boating Often the accidents we see are not to people inside the boat, but rather those outside, like tubers and swimmers. We see a lot of bruises, broken bones, frac-

tured jaws and concussions from tubing accidents caused by a driver going too fast trying to “knock the riders off the tube.” Many of these injuries involve two riders who hit each other as the tube flies up over a big wave.

Ropes are also dangerous. Drivers and spotters need to be careful not to get a hand or finger under a tow rope.

We have seen many injuries to hands and rope burns to the body because boaters aren’t paying close attention to the rope before taking off.

Personal watercraft like jet skis also pose a great risk. There have been accidents involving riders who have crashed into each other. Others have tried to pull tubers or skiers with a jet ski and no spotter. This is not only dangerous, it is illegal.

Fishing Lures are the culprit of the most common fishing injury we see at The Urgency Room. I’ve seen lures stuck in hands, legs, heads, faces… you name it. These injuries can be very painful, especially if the barb is stuck beneath the skin. Do not remove a lure that isn’t easy to get out. Instead, come see us and we will numb the area with lidocaine before removing the lure. Also, be aware of your surroundings and never cast when people are near you.

That (not so) clean lake water A small accidental cut on your leg from swimming to close to the dock may seem like no big deal. But, in some cases, bacteria in our lakes can make this simple injury much more complicated. One example is Aeromonas hydrophila. This is a type of bacteria commonly found in freshwater or brackish water and in some fish. If this bacteria gets into an open cut, it can become contaminated causing a serious skin infection. Aeromonas hydrophila can also cause stomach upset, diarrhea and vomiting if swallowed.

Giardia is another infection caused by swallowing lake water. Symptoms include abdominal cramps, bloating, nausea and bouts of watery diarrhea. A

giardia infection is caused by a microscopic parasite found in lakes and can also be transmitted through food and person-to-person contact.

Dehydration We see cases of lake or water-related dehydration all the time. Typically, the patient has spent the entire day outside.

Lorraine E. Anderson Age 84 Formerly of White Bear Lake Died peacefully at Brookdale Memory Care Center in North Oaks on May 21, 2017. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years Pallmer B. Anderson, oldest son Gregg Robert Anderson of Houston, and Grandson Timothy Lyons of Shoreview.

Pallmer and Lorraine met in Willmar. They made their home in White Bear Lake for over 50 years raising their family. Kay Lyons (John) of Shoreview, Thomas Anderson (Robin), Mequon, Wis., Mark Anderson (Martha), Woodbury. 11 Grandchildren: Christopher Anderson, Marie Anderson, Tara Leever, Nick Anderson and Jarrod Taylor, Michael and Taylor Lyons, Clayton and Addie Anderson, Ella and Turner Anderson, and Great Grandchildren: Briton Leever Jr., Carly, Chloe and Madison Anderson. She was also survived by her brother Jerry Pierre and her sisters Carrolle Serbus, Judy Pierre, Lois Dreher, and Janice Moren.

After obtaining her X-Ray Technician certification in St. Paul, Lorraine moved to Willmar working for a hospital as an X-Ray Technician.

She later moved to White Bear Lake and stayed home to raise her four children.

Lorraine loved to sew and she was always sewing for herself, her kids or someone else. She worked for herself and others sewing drapes. She was also good at reupholstering furniture and refinishing furniture. She loved cooking and entertaining friends and family and everyone benefited from her homemade fudge brownies, bars, cookies and birthday cakes.

Because of her love for baking, her grandchildren called her "grandma cookie". She was an awesome grandma and cherished her grandchildren. Lorraine volunteered a lot. Brownie leader, girl scout leader, and religion teacher.

Lorraine’s family would like to thank Brookdale Memory Care Center and Hospice staff for taking such wonderful care of Lorraine.

A memorial service and visitation will be held on Friday July 14, 2017 in Oakdale at Guardian Angels Church. A visitation will start at 12:30 p.m. followed by a service at 1:30 p.m. Lunch will follow the service at Guardian Angels church.

Shirley Grace McIntyre (nee Mastenbrook) Shirley Grace McIntyre (nee Mastenbrook) of White Bear Lake Shirley was born in Warren Township on October 29, 1929. She was one of three children to Lydia (nee Mueller) and Arthur Mastenbrook. She married James McIntyre in Minneapolis in November of 1952 and moved to White Bear Lake. Preceded in death by parents, Lydia and Arthur Mastenbrook; husband of 62 years, James; sister, Sylvia Hershelman; and brother, Frank Mastenbrook. She will be dearly missed by her children, Gary (Deb), Kathy (Kris) Wolfe, Mike, and Cindy (Jeff) Kruger; grandchildren, Brianna, Andrew, Sarah (Troy) Moore, Julie (Kevin) Johnson, Colleen Skara, Jessica, Cristin, Matthew (Anneli) Kruger, and Patrick Kruger; her great-grandchildren, Blake Moore, Aunika Skara, and Max Johnson; and many other family and friends.

Roger D. Olund Roger D. Olund, age 71, died unexpectedly in White Bear Lake on Monday, June 26, 2017.

Roger was the most wonderful husband, father and grandfather a family could ever hope for. He was a great teacher of life lessons and was dedicated to his family. He loved the outdoors and passed that love onto his daughters, Shari and Kim, through many camping trips and bike rides. He was an avid fisherman and after retiring from 38 years at Northwest Airlines, spent the last 10 years vacationing at Tepee Tonka Resort on beautiful Blackduck Lake in northern Minnesota where he could fish to his heart's content. His passion for fishing lives on through his grandchildren with whom he taught his favorite sport.

Together, Roger and his wife, Barb, lived a wonderful life together raising their children and spoiling their grandchildren. They took pleasure in their time spent outdoors camping, biking almost every Minnesota trail, hiking with friends, and cross country skiing.

Roger is preceded in death by parents, Bertil and June; brother Robert. He is survived by loving wife, Barbara (nee Thulin); daughters, Shari (Joe) Champion, White Bear Lake and Kimberly (Brandon) Scheel, Madison Lake; grandchildren, Adam, Megan, Luke and Maddie; and sister-in-law, Nancy.

This year's proceeds will be donated to the children of Tammy Hayes, a single mother who died unexpectedly April 15 at age 39.

Hayes left behind three boys: Shawn, 19, a 2016 White Bear Lake Area High School grad who works at Viking Electric; Devin, 15, a 10th-grader at White Bear North Campus, and Braden, 12, a seventh-grader at Sunrise Middle School. Shawn is seeking guardianship of his two younger brothers and hopes to remain in White Bear Lake.

for the 29th annual benefit. Departure is noon to the 19 tour stops listed on the back of the shirts.

Hearing on city councilman’s assault charges postponed

VADNAIS HEIGHTS — A court hearing scheduled last week regarding an alleged assault by a city councilman was rescheduled to September.

Ramsey County District Court rescheduled the omnibus hearing to Sept. 25 after Terry Nyblom’s lawyer, Beau McGraw, requested it be postponed due to a surgical procedure Nyblom received two weeks prior to the hearing, according to court documents. The physician noted that Nyblom needed six weeks to recover.

The main purpose of an omnibus hearing is to determine whether there is enough evidence to bring the case to trial.

Nyblom was arrested April 30 and charged in Ramsey County District Court for allegedly interfering with a 911 call, domestic assault, fifth-degree assault and disorderly conduct.

The alleged victim called 911 early in the morning, alleging she was being verbally and physically abused, according to court documents. She alleges Nyblom made threatening statements to her, threw a landline telephone when she tried to call 911 and pulled her jacket in

such a way she felt choked.

Law enforcement observed a bruise on her arm from where the jacket may have rubbed and found Nyblom apparently drunk with bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred speech and the smell of alcohol, according to court documents. Nyblom admitted to a deputy that he drank a six-pack. The deputy also noted he saw Nyblom lose his balance more than once that night.

Nyblom has asserted his innocence. He said he did not restrict the woman’s 911 call, did not assault her and did not make threatening statements.

WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS The Washington County Sheriff's Office reported the following selected incidents in Birchwood, Dellwood, Grant, Mahtomedi, Pine Springs and Willernie:

Dellwood • A resident on Bayhill Road reported two unlocked vehicles rummaged through overnight June 13-14. Nothing was reported taken, and there are no suspects.

• A resident of Eldorado Drive on June 14 reported receiving a phone call from a party wanting him to send a picture of his credit card with the three security code digits on the back. The complainant recognized the attempted scam, did not comply and blocked the number.

Grant • A Stillwater woman, 19, was cited June 10 in the 9700 block of Manning Avenue N. for speeding 69 mph in a 55 mph zone.

• A White Bear Lake man, 22, was cited June 11 on Manning Avenue N. and Highway 96 for driving after revocation.

• A resident in the 980 block of Keswick Avenue N. reported mail stolen from her mailbox June 11. Her neighbor found an envelope belonging to the complainant on the ground with the check removed.

The complainant's neighbors reported encountering similar issues.

Mahtomedi • A Stillwater man, 18, was cited June 10 on Stillwater Road and Warner Avenue for seat belt violation.

• An Inver Grove Heights man, 30, was cited June 10 on Stillwater Road and

Kindross Road for seat belt violation.

• A Minneapolis man, 36, was arrested at 10:35 p.m. June 10 on Hilton Trail and Stillwater Road for driving after revocation after being pulled over for a nonfunctioning driver's side headlight.

The subject had numerous violations involving driving after revocation and multiple failures to appear to pay fines.

• A child's bike was reported stolen June 11 from a porch in the 400 block of Hallam Avenue S. • A St. Paul man, 25, was cited at 1:32 a.m.

June 12 in the 3300 block of Century Avenue for driving after suspension.

• Loose change was reported taken overnight June 12-13 from a vehicle parked in the 100 block of Dahlia Street.

• Three separate residents in the 600 block of Eastgate Parkway reported unknown persons tampering with unlocked vehicles parked in their drive-

ways overnight June 12-13. Nothing was reported missing.

• A Mahtomedi girl, 17, was cited at 2:57 a.m. June 14 on Dartmoor Road and Fernwood Place for possessing drug paraphernalia in a motor vehicle after being pulled over for facing the wrong way in traffic while dropping off a passenger. A purse and a wallet containing identification of another person were taken into evidence.

Willernie • A Mahtomedi woman, 19, was cited at 12:20 a.m. June 14 on Kindross Road and Stewart Road for failure to stop at a stop sign. Her passenger, a Lake Elmo woman, 18, was also cited for possessing an open bottle and drug paraphernalia in a motor vehicle.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office reported the following incidents:

Vadnais Heights • Relatives were bringing 91-year-old Grandma back to her Vadnais Lane home from an appointment the morning of June 21 when they saw a man come running out Grandma’s wide open front door carrying a laundry basket. The Hispanic man, a stranger, clad in jeans and a white T-shirt with a handkerchief over his face, jumped into a pickup truck and sped away.

The surprised witnesses, Grandma and her relatives, called 911. Deputies entered the house to find all Grandma’s jewelry and $100 in cash missing. The rust-andmaroon pickup was sporting a bumper sticker that said “gone fishing.”

• A 56-year-old Mayfair Road woman opened her computer the morning of June 21 and was greeted by a pop-up ad that said “you have a virus,” and suggesting she contact Aspire Signature Technology, which asked her to purchase $2,100 worth of gift cards and provide AST with the code numbers. She did and was out the $2,100.

Authorities remind users that this is a scam and to not open “pop-up” ads that appear on their computers.

• If you’re going to steal a vehicle, it’s best to keep a low profile, unlike stealing the black “stretch limo” Lincoln Town Car Executive that was taken June 22 in the 4100 block of Centerville Road. The limo was recovered the next morning on Heritage Court.

• An ex-boyfriend continues to post his ex-girlfriend’s supposed availability as a prostitute online. The investigation also continues.

• A 93-year-old woman shopping with her daughter at WalMart June 23 was distracted by two “shoppers,”

one of whom snatched her purse out of her cart. The senior suffered the loss of $500 at ATMs before her bank card could be canceled.

• A man created a stir at WalMart in the 800 block of County Road E the afternoon of June 24 by yelling, cussing and throwing toys around, scaring the children of shoppers on the scene. The 27-year-old Little Canada man, who had been released from county detox earlier in the day for abusing detox staff, was booked into the Ramsey County Jail on a disorderly conduct charge.

• A red 29-year-old Yamaha scooter valued at $500 and a tackle box went missing overnight June 24 from a trailer parked in the front yard of a residence in the 4200 block of Heritage Court. No suspects.

• A prowler with an extensive shopping list rummaged through an unlocked truck overnight June 25, parked in the 4500 block of Birch Ridge Road. The prowler got ahold of a credit card and immediately went shopping.

Charges were rung up at AutoZone, Dairy Queen, BP (gas), E-Cig Smoke Shop, Target, Menard’s, SA (gas) and O’Reilly Auto Parts. The total loss amounted to $1,468.

• A routine traffic stop June 26 on County Road E turned into a trip to jail for the vehicle’s two occupants.

The driver, a 29-year-old Little Canada woman, was charged with driving after license cancelation inimical to public safety. Her passenger, a 34-year-old man, was arrested for violating an order for protection the driver had against him.

White Bear Township • Electronics valued at $400 were taken from a Honda van parked in the driveway of a residence in the 4000

block of Portland Avenue overnight June 21. No forced entry was found.

• A redtail hawk, too young to fly, was found the afternoon of June 23 in the 1500 block of Hammond Road.

Folks in the area were unable to spot a nest nearby, so the juvenile hawk was taken to the University of Minnesota Raptor Center in Roseville.

• A 95-year-old female shopper was targeted by a suspect at Cub Foods June 23 in the 1000 block of Meadowlands Drive, according to police records. The suspect took the senior’s wallet from her purse in her shopping cart, later using her credit card to rack up $438 in charges at nearby Target. An investigation continues.

• Here’s a criminal that needs a new line of work. A 40-year-old Rockford, Minnesota man grabbed a purse from a cart at Cub Foods June 25 while the 26-year-old victim was distracted by her child, and put it in a plastic bag. The clumsy thief then fell down, losing a shoe and the bag with the purse, but managed to escape the scene in a silver Saturn. The Saturn was located later in Minneapolis and investigators are looking for the owner of the black Nike sandal, who not surprisingly has a criminal record, on a charge of “felony theft of a person.”

• A 71-year-old man was found dead in his bed in the 3900 block of Stacker Place the morning of June 26 by his wife. The man, who had medical issues, was deemed to have died of natural causes by the County Medical Examiner.

• A 22-year-old Oakdale man was confronted by a 26-year-old local man the night of June 27 in the 4200 block of Bellaire Avenue. The local man, who had hit the younger man with a metal pipe, was charged with felony assault and booked into jail. An investigation continues.

WHITE BEAR LAKE POLICE REPORTS The White Bear Lake Police Department reported the following incidents: • An underage drinker, 20, was in the median waving down cars on White Bear Avenue near Kowalski's June 23.

His blood alcohol level was 0.23. He was taken home to his dad.

• A resident on Birch Street reported her fence was cut June 23.

• Graffiti was reported in the 1800 block of Florence Street June 24.

• A St. Paul man, 56, was arrested for DWI in the 4100 block of Hoffman Road June 24. His blood alcohol level was 0.14.

• Numerous items from a nearby vehicle were found lying near a tree in the 5000 block of Stewart Avenue June 24. The

items were returned to their owner.

• A truck window was reported shot with a BB gun sometime overnight in the 2100 block of Eighth Street June 24.

• A stereo system was reported stolen from an underground garage in the 3100 block of Karth Road June 24.

• Golf clubs were reported stolen from an unlocked vehicle in the 1700 block of Elm Street June 24. The golf clubs were worth $2,500.

• A man, 33, and woman, 32, were arrested for fifth-degree drug possession near Highway 61 June 25.

• Medical supplies were reported stolen from an unlocked vehicle in the 2600 block of Riviera Drive June 25.

• An $80 pocket knife was reported stolen

in the 2400 block of South Shore Boulevard June 25.

• A White Bear Lake woman, 19, was arrested for an assault warrant in the 3600 block of St. Regis Drive June 25.

• An officer spotted a driver drinking from a beer bottle near Midland Avenue June 25. The Oakdale man was cited for having an open bottle and driving after revocation.

Costs ramping up for Sports Center remodel WHITE BEAR LAKE — In a White Bear Lake Sports Center update to City Council June 27, City Manager Ellen Richter warned that the price tag may go higher.

At fi rst, the city anticipated a $4.5 million project, Richter said.

That did not factor in the contingencies inherent to all construction projects.

After three meetings with the contractor, Kraus-Anderson, the preliminary estimates are roughly $5.5 million, which includes a $250,000 contingency, or 25 percent of the increase in the cost estimate. Of the remaining costs, about $400,000, or 40 percent, is associated with modifications to accommodate a future second sheet of ice.

“That was not part of the original scope and is defi nitely not a given,” Richter stated. “Additional outside fi nancial contributions would be needed for that to happen.”

The city is focused on providing upgrades to the existing facility and not on planning a second sheet, she said. However, there has been considerable interest in a second sheet by some to potentially accommodate high school hockey and association tournaments.

This is driven, Richter explained, by increased demands on the Vadnais Sports Center, which is impacting the high school program.

is exploring the costs of a future second sheet just to have the numbers. “It would clearly be considerably cheaper to incorporate those upgrades now than to build an entire system for a second sheet someday,” she said, “but a second sheet is not certain. Therein lies the dilemma.”

Councilman Dan Jones feels the party interested in a second sheet should be the one paying for it — namely, the White Bear Lake Area Hockey Association. He told staff he was nervous about the costs and to keep their pencils sharpened.

Councilman Kevin Edberg asked Richter if the cost increase was still within the city's fi scal capacity. “We have not worked the numbers out yet,” she replied, “but we will have those answers by the next council meeting on July 11.”

Richter added that there are also required American Disability Act improvements, “which are not insignificant,” and other site improvements, signage and miscellaneous costs that would add $350,000, or 30 percent of the increase in project cost estimates.

“I'm hopeful we will be able to reduce these estimates over the next few weeks,” the city manager said.

“This cost estimate is fairly preliminary, as there remain another three weeks of work for Kraus-Anderson and the design team before a report is complete.”

Career pathways: Creating stuff from scratch

WHITE BEAR TOWNSHIP — A man in a gray button-down shirt sifted through a pile of metal on his desk inside the welding building at Schwing America, pointing out broken welds to a 2017 graduate of White Bear Lake Area High School.

The pieces of steel with broken welds were from tests done during interviews.

Dave Smith, the head of quality control in the welding department, broke the welds to look deep within to see to whom he should offer a job welding concrete pump trucks.

It is essential the trucks' welds have no impurities, Smith told the recent grad, Aaron Purdham, of Vadnais Heights.

The trucks pump concrete as high as 200 feet; Schwing's trucks helped build the new World Trade Center, new I-35W bridge and U.S. Bank Stadium.

Purdham was at Schwing during week two of a four-week summer program developed by White Bear Lake Area Schools and local businesses to grow the next generation's interest in skilled trades. Four businesses came together through the Vadnais Heights Economic Development Corporation (VHEDC) to offer four students a week at their companies to see what a career in manufacturing entails.

The students are paid $10/hour by VHEDC through Ramsey County. It took about two years for the dream program to come together, said Rich Wessels, career navigator for the manufacturing career pathway program in White Bear Lake Area Schools. Paid internships were part of the dream when United Way provided funding to launch the manufacturing classes two years ago, he said.

As Wessels and others tried to make that dream come true, they encountered an obstacle — under Minnesota state law, youth under age 18 were not allowed to work with manufacturing machines due to child labor laws. Wessels and other lobbyists worked with the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry to revise those laws — now, 16- and 17-yearolds can work on machines 20 percent of the time they are working, which is the federal maximum.

“It's pretty creative the way it was all pulled together,” Wessels said. The four companies also don't need to worry about liability, as the students have worker's compensation through the county, funded by VHEDC. The White Bear Lake Area Schools Education Foundation bought the students steel-toed boots, noted Ling Becker, VHEDC executive director.

Throughout the four weeks, students will experience a variety of manufacturing careers.

At Du Fresne Manufacturing, they will see what it is like to work in a sheet metal “job shop” that fulfills orders for

various industries, Wessels said. At Mold Craft, students will learn how steel molds are made to manufacture items such as water bottles. At Specialty Manufacturing, students will see how valves are made for items such as garden hoses and soda machines.

At Schwing, students will see how concrete pump trucks are made.

The company needs more skilled trades workers, said Joy VanderHeiden, senior human resources generalist.

Baby boomers are starting to retire and the company, like many manufacturers across the state, is finding they don't have enough applicants to fill positions.

“The pipeline is dry,” VanderHeiden said. Right now, the company has 23 positions open, mostly for welders, mechanics and painters.

“We want to change that stigma that manufacturing is old school,” VanderHeiden noted. “When you build something with your hands, there is so much pride in that.”

The $1 million concrete trucks are essentially made from scratch on site. The cabs and booms — the arms of the pump trucks that rise into the air — come from Germany, where the company originated. The truck prep department reshapes them for customization.

“We get our kicks out of breaking things,” said Mike Wiegel, the department lead.

Students get to experience the whole process of manufacturing during the week — from engineering to the warehouse, VanderHeiden said. They even get to test a boom, which Purdham said was his favorite part at Schwing.

“The welding here was cool,” he also noted. Purdham was the first student in the district to take all four of the manufacturing career pathways courses. He said he didn't have an idea of what manufacturing entailed before taking his first classes — manufacturing and applied engineering I and II. “After those classes, it kind of sparked some interest,” he said. He then did an independent study of precision machining I and II. Now he is considering whether he wants to study postsecondary manufacturing. He said he may even take a job right away.

Part of the program also involves students meeting weekly with Wessels to discuss what they are learning and work on resume writing and interviewing skills. Students do an interview at each company, Wessels noted. They have the opportunity for a raise halfway through the program. They will also take a tour of St. Paul College's manufacturing program.

The manufacturing career pathway program was launched two years ago with courses at South Campus. It expanded to North Campus last year, Wessels said. This summer, five students from North Campus are attending a manufacturing and welding camp at St. Paul College. Fourteen students are attending a manufacturing camp at Century College this summer.

The program is one of four career pathways programs developed by the district in response to the Legislature's 2013 World's Best Workforce Bill, said Jill Pearson, the district's teaching and learning coordinator. The construction career pathway program at the Area Learning Center also began two years

ago. IT launched last year and health care launched this year.

Naming rights were secured along with the generous gift, which means the new theater will be called the Hanifl Performing Arts Center with Lakeshore Players Theatre and Children’s Performing Arts in smaller letters below. CPA will have rehearsal and classroom space in the new facility, which is expected to be completed by March 1, 2018.

Thomas said $8.1 million has been raised to date for the center with the goal of $1 million more.

When the new state-of-the-art venue opens next spring, its first production will be “Into the Woods.”

It’s a musical with a fairytale twist — apropos for the theater and its evolution over the last 65 years.

Another presenter was Arlyn Bruccoli of South Carolina. She and her husband Matthew, who died in 2008, collected dozens of Fitzgerald editions and wrote biographies and essays on Fitzgerald and other writers. In 1969, Matthew went to Baltimore for a charitable book auction, where Fitzgerald’s daughter Scottie had donated two rare books.

“Someone else had donated an inscribed copy of Fitzgerald’s ‘Taps at Reveille,’” Arlyn said. “Matthew

was outbid on Scottie’s donation, but he was trying for (‘Taps at Reveille’), when he realized that his opponent was Scottie, and stopped. She acquired the book, added her own inscription to her father’s and had it handed to Matt.”

This interaction led to a long friendship between Scottie and the Bruccolis, as well as collaborative scholarly work.

The event was made possible by the White Bear Lake Historical Society and the White Bear Center for the Arts, with the help of coordinator and local historian Mary Jane LaVigne.

WHITE BEAR LAKE — If Mizu is open, that means final inspections went smoothly.

Last week, owners of the Boatworks Commons restaurant announced Mizu would open with fireworks on the Fourth of July with that contingency.

Parking is also a concern. In an effort to avoid parking problems near the popular waterfront area, staff asked City Council June 27 to designate no more than 20 stalls in the public ramp for Mizu and Acqua customers. The spaces would be reserved for the two restaurants 5 to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday during the summer.

City Planner Anne Kane pointed out to council that staff feels it appropriate to designate a number of parking spaces for the two restaurants after the recent approval of Tally's conditional use permit amendment that allows increased seating on music nights. That approval is on an interim basis for the 2017 summer season.

Staff is working with Sampair Properties, owner of the Acqua building, and At Home Apartments, owner of the Mizu building, to reach agreement on the number of stalls to sign and how to verify that vehicles using the spaces are actually patrons. Kane said the parking restrictions are enforceable only if authorized by City Council resolution.

The public ramp, located on Lake Avenue South, has 114 public stalls. The White Bear Lake Police Department is authorized to enforce the use of the restricted spaces as stated on the enforcement signs installed in the Boatworks Commons ramp.

Councilman Dan Jones asked staff if the restaurant owners approached the city asking for the designated spaces. He believes the expense for new signage is a cost the city should not pay.

“This is a direct result of the Tally's vote,” Jones said. “Why not assign the cost to them?”

It was estimated the signs will cost $30 to $35 each.

Not convinced the signs will be obeyed, Councilman Kevin Edberg wanted assurance that “the spirit of the initiative” will be honored, adding it was “a naive expectation.”

City Manager Ellen Richter said the city will likely rely on the businesses to verify and monitor usage of the parking spots.

When Jones asked Richter if the restaurant owners were asking for this, she replied, “There is concern from businesses that paid (for parking stalls) that they won't be able to use them. This is to bridge some of those concerns.”

The council approved the parking resolution, along with another that extended the Boatworks Commons restaurant CUP another 60 days. Mizu's permit was due to expire end of June.

Recycling success behind Washington Square gets recognition The city of White Bear Lake was presented a “City of Excellence Award” at the annual League of Minnesota Cities’ conference in Rochester last month in recognition of its Washington Square Waste Consolidation Project.

The downtown project is a successful shared recycling and organics collection program shared among 11 small businesses surrounding a city-owned parking lot. Not only does it beautify the area, but it reduces disposal costs and makes the city more sustainable, read the award.

Tyler Conrad, owner of Goodthings, had been working since 2013 to mobilize nearby businesses to consolidate their waste services in an effort to clean up the area and cut garbage bills by increased recycling.

After securing the interest of 11 businesses, Conrad worked with Minnesota Waste Wise, a non-profit associated with the MN Chamber of Commerce, to conduct a waste audit at each establishment to determine capacity needed. Waste Wise then worked on his behalf to request bids from haulers. Based on the low bid by Aspen Waste Systems, Waste Wise and Conrad then worked together to develop a pricing structure.

The design and construction of the enclosure was led by the City. Staff then applied for a Ramsey County Public Entity Innovation Grant to cover the cost of design and construction of the enclosure, which was completed in November of 2015.

Conrad then worked with Minnesota Waste Wise and participating businesses to apply for BizRecycling grants through Ramsey and Washington Counties; a total of eight grants were awarded amounting to $31,400. This funding was used to purchase color-coded recycling and organics bins, compostable bags, signage, tools to educate staff on recycling, and equipment for transporting waste to the enclosure.

The dumpsters are gone, replaced by attractive landscaping and patio seating thanks to unified recycling efforts by business owners.

The 11 businesses collaborating in this project are now composting 47 percent and recycling 18 percent of their waste by weight. Since implementation, an estimated 75,347 pounds of organic material that was previously thrown away has been collected in the organics recycling program. Twenty-four cubic yards of recyclables are now collected weekly, compared to the 18.3 cubic yards collected prior to the project’s start.

This marks a 31 percent increase in the volume of recyclables collected, which is attributed to two businesses adding recycling programs, three businesses switching from cardboard-only to single stream recy-

cling, and all businesses adding more bins, signage, and education to their programs.

While waste services have fluctuated due to seasonality and the addition of the last few participants, the project is on track to save a collective amount of approximately $368 per month or $4,416 per year. Furthermore, six individual sets of waste containers have been eliminated from Washington Square, allowing for more attractive, pedestrian-friendly sidewalks and the addition of outside seating at one restaurant where a dumpster previously stood.

Winds estimated at more than 70 p.m. accompanied the deluge of rain that moved in about 8:30 p.m. Friday night from the northeast…Putting the final touches to the packages which are going to men in the service in Vietnam are Mrs. Paul Maki, Mrs. Dennis Gerhring, Mrs. James Kline, Mrs. David Carlson and members of the Welcome Wagon Club which sponsored the project. The twenty-five packages contain books, stationery, canned goods, candy, soap, shaving needs, puzzles, playing cards plus many other items. They are expected to arrive in Vietnam within one week…

1992 White Bear Township has allocated $2,300 to replace the often broken police radar for the township sheriff deputy.

The new model has an expected life of four years. Township Supervisor Doug Pfeffer complained that the old radar unit has a promised life of six years, yet is now wearing out after four years.

However Deputy Tom LaBathe stated the old unit had already exceeded its life span….A local body builder earned Mr. Minnesota honors this year. Michael Marier, White Bear Lake, claimed the 1992 Mr. Minnesota body building title.

Marier is a 1980 graduate of White Bear High School.

Baseball foundation aims to give every youth a chance at bat

VADNAIS HEIGHTS — Born out of the idea that any child should be able to play sports regardless of their family's fi nancial stability, the Blizzard Foundation began in 2016 on the back of the well-known Minnesota Blizzard Baseball program.

Despite similar names, the Blizzard Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization located in Vadnais Heights that used the Blizzard Baseball brand to get instantly recognized in order to grow.

Jeff Huth, a former Minnesota Blizzard Baseball player and high school English teacher, heeded the call to head up the Blizzard Foundation after his former coach Adam Barta — founder of Minnesota Baseball Academy, known now as Blizzard Baseball Academy — asked him to leave his dream job and become director of the foundation.

There are five core ideas that each player is expected to live and play by, otherwise known as the Blizzard Big 5: Acceptance of responsibility, loyalty, humility and class, synergism and kaizen, a Japanese philosophy of continuous improvement.

“What I like more about baseball is kinda the intricate life lessons that baseball offers over just the competition in the sport,” Huth said.

“So, (it's) using baseball as a vehicle to teach life lessons to kids that need it and kids that at this age, regardless of how good they are, don't always listen to their parents all the time.”

Now, at 27 years of age, Huth uses what he learned as an English teacher to help further develop youth in the program.

“We're devoted to empowering baseball players to be outstanding human beings, and we really believe that all baseball players — all people — have the tools inside of them to be positive community members. So how can we help them refi ne and relish those?” Huth said.

Division I recruit, was killed in an automobile accident at the age of 18.

“Johnny was a Division I player through and through,” Huth said, “but what was cooler was he was an even better person … Johnny was everyone's best friend.”

According to Huth and Barta, Price was a role model of a player who believed that everyone should have a chance to play baseball regardless of their situation. It was those ideas that helped shape the Blizzard Foundation.

“To me, it means relationships,” Barta said. “It means helping kids out that are in need — wheth-

er it's from a fi nancial standpoint, moral support, (or) just teaching kids the values that we grew up on.”

With the goal of helping families in fi nancial hardship, the foundation will offer the Johnny Price Memorial College Scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to support a student-athlete who exemplifies the qualities that Price had.

“From a fi nancial standpoint, it means helping kids out who otherwise wouldn't get a chance to play baseball,” Barta said. “We're trying to help kids out who can't afford it. Money should never, will never, and has never gotten in the way of a kid playing in our program.”

Cole Albers, Price's former teammate and recipient of this year's scholarship, spoke of what it meant to be a part of the Minnesota Blizzard Baseball program and Blizzard Foundation.

“It means the world,” Albers said. “The fi rst word that comes to my mind is 'family'. Everybody's out here for each other.”

Albers also reflected on what it was like to be Price's teammate.

“He was kinda the life of the program,” Albers said. “I remember on the bus rides he was always cracking jokes … he made it easy to come to the field for 8 a.m. games.”

As the Blizzard Foundation grows, Huth hopes to see it expand beyond baseball and reach as many kids in need of fi nancial assistance as possible.

“The Blizzard Foundation is an avenue not just for kids that only play for the Minnesota Blizzard; it's not just a top-tier thing,” Huth said. “If there's a kid in White Bear Lake that said, 'Hey, I really want to play association ball, but we just don't have the means,' the foundation wants to be there to help them.”

Big national win for sailing siblings

What’s stimulating about sailboat racing, Kate Cox explains, is being compelled to remain collected and calm — easier said than done when you’re out on the water dancing with the wind for eight hours, no breaks allowed.

“Things can go wrong and you learn that frustration only makes it worse,” said the college sophomore-to-be, who recently won a prestigious national event with her brother Eddie, and serves as a coach with White Bear Sailing Club.

“I try to tell my students to control everything that they can, from checking over your equipment to even making sure your hull is clean. In some sports, players get breaks, or only have to be on the field for an hour-long game, but sailing is mentally and physically exhausting.”

Staying tactically and physically alert all day is “a crazy dynamic that the best sailors have fi gured out.”

Eddie, 23, and Kate, 19, have it figured out well enough to win the MC National Championship at Rush Creek Yacht Club in Texas on June 17.

Piloting a brand new Melges MC Scow, provided by the company for which Eddie works, powered by North Sails, the duo won three out of seven races.

Cox was close at the heels of regatta leader Mark Tesar entering the fi nals race. As the Melges website described it, the Cox boat set up on the starting line immediately to leeward of Tesar. Cox’s boat speed put its bow out, and just after the cannon, the race was theirs to control.

At the fi rst windward mark they had a 30-second lead on Kenny Wolfe and Virginia Hannen, the second-place boat. Tesar was 18 boats back. Cox led the race wire to wire.

“I think the regatta went well because we were able to limit our mistakes and sail consistently through the entire series,” Eddie assessed. “I have sailed against some of the other teams that were at the regatta and including the second place boat. We felt that we had the ability to win if we sailed to our abilities and limited our mistakes.”

Kate and Eddie, four years apart, were teammates for two years on the White Bear Lake High School team. Eddie was captain then, and Kate would become captain as well, while Eddie went on to Hobart and William Smith College, a small school with a big reputation for college sailing, located in the Finger Lakes area of New York State.

Kate, teaming with Olivia Staruck, became a three-time state double-handle champion, under coach Nick Hovland. During her senior year, the five-member team traveled to New Orleans for a national event. Kate followed Eddie to Hobart and William Smith College to join the 34-member sailing team where she revels in the group’s “intensity and passion” for the sport.

team. The siblings eagerly took up sailing when the parents introduced them. “They both live over there,” chuckles Ed, meaning the sailing club.

Eddie was White Bear Sailing Club’s X Boat coach for four years. Kate is now in her second year as X Boat coach while also coaching the Opti Race team.

“I owe almost all my friendships and my Kate Cox most fun memories to this sport,” she professes. “The fact that I am now able to participate in college sailing, a very competitive and intense program, I owe to my parents and the White Bear Sailing School.”

Eddie competed in nationals three of four years at Hobart and Williams Colleges and won his division at the conference meet his senior year.

He works for Melges Performance Sailboats in Zenda, Wisconsin, the company that made the MC Scow used in Texas. He’s a sales rep, fronts

for the company at regattas, helps in customer support and dabbles in production.

Upon graduation last year, he turned his focus to the MC Nationals and resuming his partnership with Kate. More racing is planned. They already had one big win together, in 2014 when Kate and Izzy Boo won the X-Boat Inland Championships, the Inland Lakes YachtEddie Cox ing Association’s signature race each year, with Eddie coaching them, in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. She had fi nished second in 2013, and Eddie also had a second-place fi nish in the same event.

Now that he’s a grownup with a job, Eddie is delighted to still be sailing. Asked his career goals, he said, “I guess I aspire to continue to improve my knowledge as a sailor and to help grow the sport that I love.”

White Bear Township nine is 4-12 but had a good week and a special night

The White Bear Township baseball team lost nine of its first 11 games this year, then won two straight over good teams last week, 5-3 over Stockman’s Irish and 7-6 over Highland Park. Especially satisfying was the latter because they had special guests that night.

The occasion was their third annual Senior Citizen’s Night, with around 75 seniors on hand. The club treated them to pulled-pork sandwiches with pop, beer or water, along with a win.

“That was just an idea we had to do an outreach in the community and get more participation,” explained Dick Sand, longtime general manager. “We get a good audience that game.

“We contact the activities directors at all the senior citizen housing complexes. We always get very positive comments. Actually we serve everyone who’s there. There was a youth game on the other field and they came over, too.”

The ball club, whose home games are played at White Bear Township Fields, has not fielded a contender for a while, but keeps putting a lineup on the field each summer.

They are soldiering on this year even after nine players from last year turned in their uniforms due to the usual array of guys graduating from college and moving away, or getting married and changing priorities, or just getting older and tired of the aches and pains.

“We had to do some recruiting. Mainly just word of mouth from our players, and we contact some college coaches,” said Sand. “It’s a pretty young team.”

The Township, wearing 1960s style Pittsburgh Pirates sleeveless uniforms, hosted the Stillwater Loggers on Tuesday and lost 7-6, putting their record at 4-12.

“Historically, we have had good pitching and defense, although you could tell that about our fielding against Stillwater. We should have won that game,” Sand said. “It’s our offense that’s been lacking, but in the last few games we’re starting to hit the ball better.”

One of the wins was a 16-0 rout of a Chaska team. But they are averaging three runs per game and have been shut out five times.

The player-manager this year is Bill Sand, Dick’s son, a former Hamline captain who’s been with the team since it started in 2001. Jason Bujold, the skipper last year, called it quits a year after getting married and Sand took the helm.

(White Bear Lake has a town-team baseball history going back to the 1890s — their only state trip was in 1925— but it was gone for a few years before 2001.)

The squad has plenty of pitchers. The

top veteran is Andy Pass, a longtime member so dedicated to baseball, Sand noted, that he had “Tommy John” surgery five years ago. That’s the graft procedure to replace a damaged elbow tendon, named for the Dodger star who was the first to receive it in 1974. Most amateur pitchers hang it up after such an injury.

The starter against Stillwater was lefty Andy Kramlinger, a White Bear Lake graduate who plays at St. Mary’s College in Winona. Kramlinger had one bad inning, giving up four runs, including a two-run homer, and took the loss. “He is a very good athlete and didn’t have his best stuff in that game,” Dick Sand said.

The other two hurlers that game were Kevin Hildreth, Forest Lake graduate who plays for Illinois Tech, and Kyle Hastings, Centennial graduate who plays for UM-Morris. Another top

starter is Matt Biagini, a North St. Paul native. The catcher just about every game is Blake Haugen, another Centennial grad who plays for UM-Morris.

The cleanup hitter is a big, agile Richfield native, Raheim Hampton, who played for Itasca Community College.

Leading off are either Pat Kaehler, outfielder from Vadnais Heights, or Haugen, depending on whether a lefty or righty is pitching against them.

Their upcoming games are home against Frogtown Lake on July 6 at 7 p.m., and at Stillwater on July 9 at 4 p.m. The team’s website is whitebeartownship.teams.mnbaseball.org.

Former prison guard writes tell-all about working behind bars Author and comic Dave Basham recently released “Prison Puzzle Pieces,” a non-fiction series that reveals what it's like inside the Stillwater prison.

The White Author Dave Basham Bear Press is running a Q&A from a former interview with a sister publication at Press Publications just in time for his book signing July 7. Basham lives in White Bear Lake and describes his three books as a look at prison life through incidents experienced by a corrections officer. “'Prison Puzzle Pieces' lays out piece by piece how this violent, dysfunctional society behind those impenetrable walls and razor ribbon works to contain those that victimize others and themselves,” he wrote. “Nothing is embellished; nothing need be embellished.”

Q: Where are you from originally, and where do you live/what do you do now?

I’ve been a resident of Minnesota all of my life. Born in Minneapolis, graduated from Columbia Heights High School, lived in a couple of northern suburbs before hanging out in Coon Rapids for a few decades before moving to White Bear Lake.

Retiring from the DOC (Department of Corrections) gave me time to write the three volumes of “Prison Puzzle Pieces.” Getting away from the many things I do at the computer is a tough job; however, I get my exercise by biking, doing home improvements and landscaping the yard. Having been active in Toastmasters over 22 years makes me capable to help others with improving their public speaking skills. I’ve done a lot to start, save and improve many Toastmaster clubs. I have no pets to take care of, because I’ve outlived all of them.

Q: You have a background in comedy.

How did you get started in comedy, and how did you end up as a corrections officer?

When I was young, the rule for us little ones was that we were not allowed to speak until we were spoken to. This caused me to be shy to the point of seeming to be rude. By the time I hit 40 years of age, I realized how ridiculous this was. To attempt to solve this dysfunction, I thought about what the most difficult thing would be to throw myself into and force myself to speak. Standup comedy was the answer. I was managing a McDonald’s restaurant at the time. Any store that I ran always received triple A ratings. Because of this, it was easy for commercials to be produced at my store knowing that it was always running well and looking sharp. The producer of these commercials was the Ronald McDonald for this area, had been a standup comedian and instructor of comedy, among many other creative endeavors. We met a few times at a remote McDonald’s warehouse where he dissected my jokes and coached me on technique. Yes, I was trained in comedy by Ronald McDonald. When I started to per-

form in clubs locally, the audience reaction was encouraging. I did well in contests where I met a guy from Toastmasters. When I was chosen over him, he invited me to a Toastmaster meeting where he told people, “If you can’t beat them, have them join you.” A former inmate wanted to start a Toastmasters club in (the) Lino Lakes prison. I was asked to help and accepted. Both inmates and officers told me that they thought I would be a good corrections officer. After traveling the country performing comedy, I accepted being a corrections officer at Stillwater Prison.

Q: The release says that you explain how the system works. What kinds of things are explained in the book?

There are no short answers to many of these questions. Giving a long answer cannot be complete, as it took three volumes and close to 1,500 pages to explain and show examples of what happens and how the system works. That said, inmate relationships, officer relationships, inmate officer relationships, what goes on in the various areas of the prison, how those areas are run, why those areas are run the way they are, the history of Stillwater prison, some of those locked up there, identifying danger and how politics affects the system are all a good start.

Q: Why is it important for you to tell this story?

I can’t lay claim to these stories being very important, but to some it will be. However, with me telling the story, you get the truth. If it happened to me, it is accurate. If it happened in the past, I researched the accuracy of what I had been told. Because it is such a wide topic, the full story never gets told, but these books I believe come closer than ever before. We get small pieces of what goes on in prisons from news programs, television shows, movies, people we know that have been caught violating society’s rules, newspapers, etc. Some of these sources make things up to make them more interesting, sensational and entertaining. That is not necessary. The truth of what goes on in prisons has those qualities without making things up.

Q: What were the most rewarding and challenging aspects of creating this book?

The most rewarding now is that it is fi nally done after working on it for so many years. It would be most rewarding if it serves to better prepare officers to deal with unsavory characters that they encounter, and I’m not referring to just inmates. It would be even more rewarding if it changed the behavior of some of the criminal elements in our society so that they stopped creating victims and reduced the need for these kinds of facilities. Hopefully, people will fi nd it interesting and entertaining.

Some challenges were how to phrase things in a way that most people could handle the information without being repulsed. How to show accurately the who, what, where, why and how of the prison without writing about it for decades.

What to put in and leave out to maintain the integrity of the project presented difficult decisions. What security measures are known and which should not be revealed? What information would be very interesting, but not necessary to reveal, as it was of a personal nature to some? Even with changing names it could cause problems, even though they probably should have it coming to them. I did not want to incite people to come to kill me, however that may happen. It was necessary to retain a lawyer to advise me on how not to get sued, even though, as is said, you can’t get blood out of a turnip.

Q: Why do you think it is important for people to know what goes on inside prisons?

The most important area would be to know how their tax dollars are being spent to keep them safe from those out to victimize them. Other than that, it is very interesting to know the realities of what goes on inside the prison. When I started performing comedy, a friend of mine would introduce me as, “This is Dave Basham. He’s a comedian.” When I started working in the prison, that changed. Comedy was no longer the most interesting thing about me. He would introduce me as, “This Is Dave Basham. He’s a guard in Stillwater Prison.” Some of my more hard-core buddies would want to know what went on there. When I told them they would say things like, “Ooo, why did you tell me that?” Well, they asked. I found it necessary to tell the stories in a more socially acceptable way without changing the story.

Q: How do you find the balance between humor and seriousness?

Finding the balance between humor and seriousness is a great way to put it. Trial and error is one way, so the more experience you get the better. You can never get it right 100 percent because everyone is different, everyone sees things differently and their views are constantly changing. The world is evolving and not necessarily for the better. What one person fi nds hilarious, another person will fi nd disgusting. One person will see a word as profane and another person will see nothing wrong with it.

In a prison setting, using humor is risky, because many people are looking for anything to twist the meaning of and create a problem, because for those in prison, problems and conflict are entertainment.

Q: What do you think people will learn from the story?

There are hundreds of stories in these books. A few of them are: • Prison is a self-contained dysfunctional city within those walls and razor ribbon.

• Many inmates are decent people that made a mistake, looked up to the wrong people, wound up incarcerated for many different reasons and, when released, will never reoffend.

• Some officers will end up behind bars not getting paid and not being able to leave.

• How the government system is far superior to private facilities, yet could be far more efficient.

• How Stillwater Prison wound up in Bayport.

Overall, people will learn why they would not want to be locked up there, why they would or would not want to work there and that after reading these books, they would have a lot more knowledge and insight on how to perform the job of being a corrections officer than most accepting that job.

Wind proves a challenge in national A boat championships Four teams from White Bear made the short trip across town to compete in the Wixon Jewelers 2017 A Scow National Championship June 23-25 on Lake Minnetonka.

Hosted by the Minnetonka Yacht Club and the National Class A Scow Association (NCASA), the event had 20 teams entered from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. White Bear sailors participating in the regatta were Will Crary, W-3, sailing “Type-A,” Lee Alnes, W-25, sailing “Euphoria,” Ken Broen, W-28, sailing “Snitch,” and Larry Pardee, W-88 sailing “Asylum.”

The 38-foot Class A Scow is the largest, fastest, and most powerful inland scow sailboat. Originally designed in the late 1800s by John O. Johnson of Johnson Boat Works in White Bear Lake, the boat retains the same general shape and size as the original boats. In the 1980s, the move to fiberglass and carbon-fiber construction, combined with the addition of a bow sprit and a massive 1200-square-foot asymmetrical spinnaker, make these boats faster than ever.

Today’s A Scow is built by Melges Performance Sailboats of Zenda, Wisconsin. Unlike keelboats of this size, the A Scow weighs less than 2000 pounds and uses only dual bilge boards for stability and thus requires a crew of six or seven people to keep her upright in heavy wind.

And heavy wind was the name of the game this year at Minnetonka.

Racing started Friday, June 23 with winds gusting over 20 mph and the stiff breeze continued through the final races on Sunday morning.

“These boats are very physically demanding and many crews had trouble keeping them from capsizing,” said Lee Alnes, who also serves as Commodore of the NCASA. “One boat lost its mast due to a forestay failure on Friday. On Saturday, four boats either did not sail or were unable to fi nish the races. By Sunday, several more boats did not compete due to equipment failures or crew fatigue.”

All four competitors from White Bear managed to fi nish all six races, despite some equipment breakdowns.

And none of them capsized in the big breeze. The overall winner after six races was Pat Hughes, M-21, from Minnetonka sailing “Melvin.” Two White Bear sailors finished in the top 10 with Will Crary taking 7th place overall and Lee Alnes fi nishing 9th place. Larry Pardee fi nished 13th and Ken Broen finished 15th in the event.

Eric Little Wing Miller: Therapy through art Q: Where are you from, how old are you, and where do you live now?

I am from Hugo. I grew up playing in the fields and swimming in the little ponds that dotted the area. I like to think of myself as my mom’s “feral” child. I am 31 years old and celebrated my golden birthday this past January. I currently live in downtown White Bear Lake.

Q: How and when did you get started as an artist?

I have always had what my relatives would call an “enviable” imagination.

My mom read fantastic books to me on our couch before bed. Stories like “The Little Witch and the Riddle” fed my imagination. When I was little, I would draw dragons and mermaids, wizards and all kinds of creatures. My late father really encouraged me to keep drawing and making projects. He’d show me books with cultural art, teach me how to use the early forms of Photoshop and the Paint program. My maternal grandfather loved when I would draw him pictures when we would visit. I would watch Ray Harryhausen’s “Clash of the Titans” over and over. I was just amazed by the patience involved and such skill needed to create his monsters. Medusa was always my favorite.

Q: Are you self-taught, or do you have formal training in art? If so, when and where?

I am self-taught, no formal training at all, outside of a couple of art classes in high school. I watch and I listen, though. I ask different artists I happen to meet about their styles and their art. I get to know the artist and we share our ideas and talk about our inspirations. It is through these encounters that I have managed to find an artistic enlightenment that expands my perspectives of the world around me. Also, I just talk a lot to many people!

Q: In what media do you work these days?

This is a tough question! I use mixed media. Typically whatever I feel best fits the vision I have for the piece.

Sometimes I use objects I find on a hike, by the lakes, in the city. Sometimes folks give me old costume jewelry, bags of seed beads, and other curious items. Garage sales are my weakness for materials.

Q: What are the most unusual materials or tools you use in your art, if any?

I feel art defies the definitions of unusual, but I would say lots of Duct Tape and a MAP gas torch.

Q: What usually inspires you in your art? Does your art tend to have commonalities of theme, color, texture or design?

Most of the work I do revolves around my experiences with recovery from alcohol abuse, as well as Complex PTSD. I call it “therapy through art.” Sometimes, it can get very difficult to express some of the more intense aspects to my illness. Though the writing I do also helps, I have found that creating what I see in my head offers a better release. In my mind, emotions have shape and definition, an ebb and flow at times. I can see the colors and flares of what I perceive as happiness, an illumination from within that carries waves of golds and oranges, a radiance comparable to the sunrise.

But in my art I also visit the darker facets. A sculpture of a life-sized ugly charred heart is the physical reminder of a time in my life where someone very close passed away very quickly. I felt my heart had actually been incinerated to the core. Red and irritated, pained by the touch of others. This particular piece I had submitted to Century College’s first Art Day Student Exhibition, and it was chosen for display by guest curator artist Carrie Elizabeth Thompson.

My art is not just an outward expression of a man with a struggle; I hope to educate others on how life can be for someone with a mental illness, as well as potentially offer some help for anyone who may be struggling.

Maybe a person will see something that I had made, read the story behind it, and feel compelled to try art as a therapy themselves.

This was a painting I did in the autumn of 2015. I was living in Morris, and was about to go through a very dark time in my life. I view the painter Vincent Van Gogh as a kind of kindred spirit. I remember I was listening to actors read his letters via a YouTube video and though it may not have been Vincent’s voice, his own words captured my imagination.

Q: At what price range is your art offered?

Because I do not typically make art to sell, I cannot provide you with an estimate! Each piece is so unique in itself, both in shape and materials, that finding a price would be difficult. Most of the jewelry I make is between $5-$50.

Q: What is it about your art to which people seem to respond?

I couldn't say for sure, but I don't hold back when it comes to putting myself into my art, so I would say it is the honesty behind it.

Q: What is the most rewarding part about creating your art?

While I am making my art, I’m not just putting things together so they might look cool or painting a certain way to garner attention. I am actively working through and processing thoughts and emotions that serve as the muse for the creation. Again, using a “therapy through art” approach, I practice mindfulness and grounding techniques as I work. This helps me confront some ugly aspects to the illness, but always teaches me how to keep cool and work through certain situations in a healthy, positive way. The connections I make with other artists are priceless, feeling support from other artists builds up my confidence and helps me to stay humble.

Q: What is the most challenging part?

Some would say criticism and judgment, or working a difficult skill. For me, it’s facing painful truths. Nobody likes to feel bad, or alone. But these are real places in my world, and sometimes it is very hard to leave them.

That’s why I remind myself that it’s OK to visit the pain, but not to live there.

Q: Do you have a "claim to fame" as an artist?

Jewelry I made was featured on models for an episode of “Tabitha’s Salon Makeover” in Minneapolis some years back. An organization called “Patients Like Me” accepted a painting I had submitted for an online gallery, then shortly after asked to share on Instagram and Twitter. PatientsLikeMe is the world’s largest personalized health network that helps people find new options for treatments, connect with others and take action to improve their outcomes.

Q: Are you a full-time artist or do you have a day job? If so, what do you do, and where?

I like to think that I am a full-time artist. Though I do have a part-time day job, I am also in college completing my Associates in Arts and Sciences degree.

Q: How do you market your art?

I have an Instagram account ( MrTrickster3) that has photos of everything I make. I use Instagram as a way to document and record my experiences with mental illness and recovery. As I said earlier, I talk a great deal to many people. I was once told that I make “30-second BFF’s” (Best Friends Forever). Some would say I am excellent at networking, but I prefer to think I’m just good at making connections. I never wanted to do art for profit or business, so I never pursued those avenues. But should someone show an interest in a certain piece, I would be open to the idea of a sale.

This was created after the passing of someone who was very close to me. I was in a dark place internally, and this heart was one of the ways I was able to release some of the pain.

Q: What else do you do in your spare time? Do you have a family, and what are their names and ages?

If I am not writing or creating, I enjoy being outside and doing things like fishing or hiking. I love going on road trips with friends to state parks to hike and camp; Clubhouse Lake in the Chippewa National Forest holds a special place in my heart. One of my favorite summer activities is fishing from a kayak on White Bear Lake.

Rarely an ugly day to fish there.

I am also developing a therapy through art program geared toward male abuse survivors. There are so many guys out there who need help and are afraid to reach out

The whole “boys don't cry” thing. Traumas can happen to men just as they can for anyone else, and it is so important that we stand up for each other and reach out to those who need help. No one deserves to suffer alone.

I hope that by helping others learn mindfulness and grounding by means of art, they will find some relief.

Q: What is your five-year plan as an artist?

To travel and collect new materials and stories, continue my education, and hopefully have a writing project completed. I’m a man of constant movement, so who knows where the wind will take me?

Blocking your driver to the right? Join the club I really enjoyed coaching the high school girls’ team this year. It gave me the opportunity to work with young players who have a lot of potential. The other opportunity I had was to see lots and lots of golf swings. High school golfers are really no different than any other subset group of golfers. The elite, Tee Time the pretty darn good, the average golfers, and those who are just startBetsy ing out.

One thing I noticed is technology Larey has really helped golfers of all levels hit their drivers a whole lot farther than 20 (even 10) years ago. The old persimmon drivers had a sweet spot the size of a pea. Even professionals never swung more than 85 percent of maximum because a mishit with one of those was disaster. Today most tour players swing 100+ even though they don’t hit fairways, because they can consistently drive close to or more than 300 yards.

They’d rather have a short iron into the green from any lie, including another fairway.

Drivers are also much longer than they used to be. Back in the day of persimmons drivers, the average length was 43.5 inches. Today’s drivers are 45.5. The longer the driver, the more clubhead speed you generate. Clubhead speed equals distance. But there is a huge trade off, and that is accuracy. For every ½ inch of mishit on the clubface, you’ll lose 5 percent of distance.

There is a kinematic sequence in the golf swing.

I’ll skip the 14 steps that have to happen in order on the way back. Let’s start with what happens on the way down. In the “perfect” golf swing, the downswing swing starts with a bump of the left hip. (for a right handed golfer). It’s a bump, not a slide. This allows your shaft to drop “in the slot”. In other words, your driver will be approaching the ball from the inside. Your lower body should be moving faster than your upper body.

At a certain point in the downswing (once again, I’m referencing the perfect golf swing) the upper body speeds up in relation to the lower body. From a visual standpoint, that occurs when the hands approach the right leg. At that point the hands and forearms will release the clubhead into the ball.

Easy peasy.

If you watch golf on TV, it looks as though the professionals actually stop their lower body during the downswing as the arms speed up and deliver that clubhead perfectly every time. In reality, they have incredibly fast hands.

Now how does that relate to the average golfer, and why am I getting so technical about this?

Because the average golfer (hereafter referred to as AG) does not execute the kinematic sequence in order. If the AG starts the downswing with the lower body, it’s usually a slide not a bump and the shaft gets caught behind you.

At this point you have two choices. Either a block to the right (most common) or if you’re good and you figured that out, you get your hands moving quickly and that result often becomes a hook if your timing is not perfect. Any of this sound familiar?

Do you read about this in Golf Digest? Nope.

Because the root of the problem is drivers are too long. The golf magazines are beholden to the manufacturers. No different than politicians beholden to special interests. So they will write about whatever the manufacturers want them to. And their goal is to sell more drivers.

Ricky Fowler switched to a 43.5 inch Cobra F7 at the Honda Classic in February this year. In an interview he stated, “I’ll tell you what, it feels pretty good to step up there with 43.5 inches.”

If you are an AG and can’t hit your driver straight, consider switching to a 43 or 44 inch driver. You won’t have to try and emulate the perfect swing. Just try this concept. Your only swing thought is this; back to the target, chest to the target.

If you are a blocker, and lots of AGs are, a shorter shaft will allow your body to square the driver up at impact instead of having to release the clubhead at impact with your arms and hands. It’s a hard concept to grasp, and I will write more about this in a different column.

Island home undergoing major remodel WHITE BEAR TOWNSHIP — The owner of 1 Bald Eagle Island is making substantial improvements to the property through use of his company, Landucci Homes.

According to Nathan Landucci, the remodel started as a window and siding replacement project with plans to replace interior cabinets, trim and floor coverings. As construction ensued, Landucci said he couldn’t ignore the potential of the property and knew that everything in the home deserved replacement.

Stillwater-based Landucci Homes specializes in building and remodeling high-end homes. Its claim to fame is “hyper-detailed luxury construction,” making the choice clear to perform a full and total remodel/restoration of the home.

“The restored home is going to be indistinguishable from a brand new home but even better, due to the robust commercial construction-grade materials, design and over-engineered components in the homes’ foundation and structure,” noted the owner. “This home is a real

diamond in the rough, but not for long since the completion date is slated for mid-June 2018.”

A full restoration of the existing structure is approved and a few changes are currently being proposed, which will add to the functionality of living on the island, he added. On Thursday, July 6, the Town Board is slated to review the following four proposed changes: • An existing basement foundation (south facing) is proposed to add a main floor and a partial upper level above the existing foundation so that it matches the house, also providing a more functional layout.

• Three south-facing triangle windows are to be removed and squared off, enhancing the exterior elevation and creating a more usable lower level.

• A front entry/stoop on the house is proposed where one previously did not exist.

• An addition is proposed to the existing garage on the north side of the island for easier egress to the home from the shore, removing the current steep wooden ramp.

Twin Cities Party Princess is opening a new location at the Maplewood Mall. A grand opening is planned 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 22 for the rental party venue. Title company settles labor lawsuit Ten workers at a White Bear Lake title company will receive $107,893 in back wages and unpaid fringe benefits after the company that employed them was found in violation of the Service Contract Act during an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division. The employees worked on real estate closings on a contract with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for Northwest Title Agency Inc. According to a news release from the U.S. Department of Labor, administrative law judges issued a decision and order effectively resolving a lawsuit fi led by the department in July 2014 against Northwest Title Agency Chief Executive Officer Wayne Holstad and Chief Operating Officer Joel Holstad.
