Bowfishermen aim to catch business BY SHANNON GRANHOLM CITIZEN EDITOR

Two local businessmen have set out to introduce people to their hobby while doing what they love and reducing the number of rough fish in local lakes. White Bear 2005 grads Ben Borowske, of Stacy, and Nik Anderson, of Hugo, founded their company B.A. Bowfishing Guide Service about two years ago. Although the business is fairly new, the two were first exposed to the sport 15 years ago. “We tried out bowfishing in

Wisconsin and loved it,” Anderson said. Borowske and Anderson kept taking friends out to give the sport a try, and they loved it. “They got hooked so fast. I looked around and there was really nothing in this area, so we figured it would be a good opportunity. There are guide services for all types of fishing, but there are only a couple of bowfishing guide services in the state,” Borowske explained. The two bought a boat, rebuilt it and decided to start a business, even though it wasn't the ideal time. Anderson and his

wife have a 2-year-old and a 4-month old and Borowske and his wife have a 2-1/2-year-old and just welcomed a newborn. In addition, both have fulltime jobs. Borowske is an equipment operator for Ramsey County and Anderson works at 3M in international business. “We want to introduce people to the sport. That is why we started, because we loved doing it so much,” Anderson said. There is an additional benefit, he noted: B.A Bowfishing targets rough fish, mainly SEE BOWFISHING, PAGE 8A

Moving forward on the Lake Links loop Mike Brooks, at left, leads a group of bicyclists, including Minnesota State Representative Peter Fischer and Minnesota State Senator Chuck Wiger, middle back and far right, on a clockwise ride around White Bear Lake Saturday, June 3. The group was celebrating the passage last week of a bonding bill that includes preliminary engineering funding for MN 244; South Shore Boulevard; and Birchwood Road, as well as construction funding for the Lion’s Park link in White Bear Lake. Find information about the project on page 11A.

WHITE BEAR LAKE — Much to the city’s surprise, the Iowa-based grocery giant that planned to build at Tower Crossings has decided the project is too expensive. City Development Director Anne Kane said she received a call from Hy-Vee representative Phil Hoey indicating they will not proceed with the project on Centerville Road. “He cited extraordinary project costs with site grading, the two-story design with smaller sales floor, high land costs to acquire the White Oak retail center and right of way improvements,” Kane said. “They are also in a lawsuit with Walgreen’s regarding a private land use restriction prohibiting pharmacy uses.” The Hy-Vee spokesman told Kane the company is committed to serving the White Bear market and found the site to be highly desirable; however, in the end, the construction bids were coming in substantially higher than projected and they’re just not able to justify the costs for the 70,000-square-foot store, fitness center, restaurant and pharmacy. “There wasn’t one deal or one facet that SEE DEVELOPMENT NIXED, PAGE 9A
