MAHTOMEDI — Shah Khan, president of the Islamic Center of Minnesota, carries his Quran around in his pocket on his smartphone. Khan, who holds a Ph.D. and works as a scientist at a biotech company, also preaches at mosques around the Twin Cities on Fridays. “I call my sermons ‘applied Quran,’” he said, indicating he wants followers of Islam to apply the good deeds encouraged in the Quran into their daily lives and not just go through the ritual of prayer. On Sunday, Khan spoke on Islam at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Mahtomedi. He was part of a four-week speaker series to shed light on what the Muslim faith is really all about. He wants people to know that Islam is not really about terrorism — it is actually about peace. In fact, the standard Arabic greeting Muslims give, “salam alaikum,” means “peace be upon you.” Khan speaks at churches and organizations across the Twin Cities because he wants to spread this message. “I am a Muslim; I'm not a terrorist,” he said. Khan attributes fear of Muslims to not knowing what Islam actually teaches. “Anybody or everybody is afraid of going into a dark room,” said Khan. “Education removes the ignorance.” SEE MUSLIM, PAGE 8A
Bow hunting from a boat BY DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR
Two guys launching a bow fishing guide service need a change to city ordinance to access all of White Bear Lake. Nik Anderson and Ben Borowske, both ’05 grads of White Bear Lake Area High School, have been bow fishing for about 12 years, but not in Ramsey County. A city ordinance disallows discharge of firearms, and a bow is included under that definition. They'd like to see that amended. In a presentation to the City Council April 26, Anderson and Borowske explained that shooting rough fish with
a bow is far different than other types of bow hunting. It works like this: Bow fishermen troll a lake's perimeter searching for invasive fish species like carp, red horse and suckers in about 5 feet of water, both at night and midday. The fiberglass arrow is tethered by 200-pound test line to the boat and can travel only a maximum of 30 feet. They must also be 200 feet from a residence. The bow is not a typical hunting type. "The draw is dialed down to 30 to 35 pounds so it fires at low speed," Anderson told the council. "The arrow is heavier and the velocity much lower." There is definitely carp in White Bear SEE BOW HUNTING, PAGE 8A
