A multicolored challenge

A friendly greeting is standard service at King City, the iconic red-trimmed restaurant off Highway 61. After three-plus decades, Sam and Camy Ma have not tired of saying “hi” to customers. “We have no crabby customers,” assured Sam, the younger of the two brothers. “At King City, they get a royal treatment.” This month, the Ma brothers are marking 35 years in White Bear Lake. There are no plans for a fancy celebration. The owners remain low-key, offering affordable Chinese fare on a menu that hasn't changed since the day they opened. There's a slight price uptick every couple years, but that doesn't dissuade loyal customers who have been dining at the restaurant for years. Once a Shakey's Pizza, turned Pizza Hut, turned King City, the singular building has sat at 3959 Linden St. since 1968. The Ma brothers recalled how a broker showing them the property commented on the growing community and the prime location near the busy highway. They had never heard of White Bear Lake. “No one thought we would make it. Everybody gave us a year,” said Sam. “We proved them all wrong.”

Some of the hundreds of participants in the White Bear Lake Area School District’s Hugo-Oneka Bear Power Color-A-Thon make their way through a barrage of colored powder at one of a series of stations along the race route Saturday morning, May 6. Proceeds from the Hugo-Oneka PTO sponsored event support students and teachers in the classroom. Find more photos online at www.presspubs.com.

Carrot wins mascot dance-off despite popped top BY SARA MARIE MOORE VADNAIS HEIGHTS EDITOR

VADNAIS HEIGHTS — When Chomp the Carrot's greens went flying during the semifinal round of the Northeast Metro Expo's mascot dance-off, he incorporated it into his routine as a prop. The move was apparently endearing to the crowd as Chomp won the finals in the audience applause competition and took home the annual dance-off's traveling trophy. Chomp, of the HealthPartners BearPower program, was one of four returning mascots from the first annual competition in 2016. Ten mascots entered this year's competition. In the preliminary round, each mascot had 45 seconds to

show their moves to a song chosen by the DJ. Ole of White Bear Soccer Club started the dance-off with soccer kicks, a confetti cannon and bugle. Bear of White Bear Area Schools dabbed and did wet noodle moves. Mudonna of the St. Paul Saints shimmied with a light-on-her-feet rhythm. White Bear Mitsubishi's White Bear face-planted on the stage, a not surprising move considering White Bear became famous around the world when he face-planted on the ice this winter in an ad outtake video that went viral. But White Bear got back up and did a nearly 360-degree jump spin. “That's not easy for a bear that size, I tell you,” said host Gary LaRue. SEE DANCE-OFF, PAGE 9A
