Trail association’s goal: ‘A grander sidewalk’ BY DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR

The push for a bike/walking trail around White Bear Lake is gaining traction. Four communities have gone on record in support of the Lake Links Trail and Sen. Chuck Wiger’s bill to provide funding for preliminary design work. White Bear Lake was among the cities that passed a resolution last week in support of S.F. 1231. The legislation appropriates funds for design of the trail along Trunk Highway 244 in Dellwood, with an amendment

expected to include Birchwood Road and South Shore Boulevard, as well as partial funding to complete a segment of the trail between Lions Park and Hazel Street. Birchwood, Mahtomedi and Willernie passed similar resolutions supporting Wiger’s bill in the last two weeks. “It’s time to complete this needed project,” said the District 43 senator. “Walkers, joggers, bicyclists and babies in strollers should be able to enjoy this area without the risk of being mowed down by traffic.” Wiger has supported efforts to

construct a 10-mile trail around White Bear Lake for 20 years. He thanked Mahtomedi resident Steve Wolgamot “for re-energizing and leading the grassroots effort. Steve has worked tirelessly to gather strong community support and endorsements,” Wiger said. “Hopefully we’ll get bipartisan legislative support to help get the design dollars for the project.” The trail is all about safety for Wolgamot, who started the lake links campaign for personal SEE LAKE LINKS, PAGE 8A

Family advocates on behalf of late airman who blamed toxic burn pits for cancer BY JULIE KINK CONTRIBUTING WRITER

PAUL DOLS | PRESS PUBLICATIONS

Maeve Haberman, 3, reaches out for a taste of sap from a freshly-tapped tree during a visit to the sugar bush at Tamarack Nature Center Saturday, March 18. With the guidance of naturalists, visitors participating in the Sap to Syrup event at the nature center learned about the history of the syrup making process, helped tap trees, collected sap and sampled the finished product. The next Sap to Syrup event at Tamarack Nature Center is Saturday, March 25.

Amie Muller’s name will forever be synonymous with veterans’ advocacy. The 36-year-old died Feb. 18, 2017 after a courageous 10-month battle with pancreatic cancer. She and her family attributed the disease to toxins from burn pits she lived near during two tours in Iraq as a member of the Minnesota Air National Guard. Amie’s family is hoping that her story will raise awareness of the health conditions associated with exposure to open burn pits, and help other families dealing with similar tragedies. Her mother-in-law, Sandy Muller of Mahtomedi, said the story is attracting nationwide attention. Amidst a flurry of media attention, Amie’s husband Brian Muller divides his time between his job as a financial advisor with Edward Jones, his singer/ SEE CANCER ADVOCACY, PAGE 8A
