WHITE BEAR LAKE — It looks like Cub Foods will be getting some competition. HyVee is coming to Centerville Road and the Iowa-based grocer is bringing a restaurant, pharmacy, liquor store and fitness center with it. Originally planned as a 40,000-square-foot store on property once owned by Jarmila Lande, the application for Phase II of the Tower Crossing development is now
70,000 square feet. Phase I is the 113-unit White Bear Heights senior residence expected to open this spring. Tower Crossing developer, Division 25 LLC, in partnership with HyVee, obtained an additional 1.8- acre parcel from Tom Moriarty, who owned the White Oak retail center behind Walgreens, which allowed a larger store. The small strip mall has one tenant, Lifetime Fitness, and will be demolished.

Monument signs like these will be displayed at two main entrances.

There weren’t many commercial enterprises in Dellwood at the turn of the last century. Businesses consisted of the yacht club, a social destination for dining and dancing, and The People’s Ice Company, which kept local iceboxes cold. A third venture started up around 1908 at the southern end of Echo Street that existed for nearly 70 years: St. Germain’s Boat Livery. As a child, George St. Germain worked for the boat rental business started by his grandparents, Joseph and Caroline. Joseph St. Germain and his new bride were given 5 acres near the lake as a wedding present from her father, George Brewer. According to the younger George, who has lived on the property his entire 77 years, Brewer speculated in land when he settled in Dellwood after the Civil War. “He fought in the Civil War under the name George Black,” said St. Germain; “but no one in the family knows why. He may have gone in for someone else. In those days you could pay people to take your place.” The boat livery and bait shop attracted fishermen from St. Paul — who rode a train to Dellwood or the streetcar to Mahtomedi — and families who spent the summer renting one of the resort’s three cabins. His grandparents eventually separated, George said, and split the property. SEE ST. GERMAIN, PAGE 8A
