Super Bowl’s volunteer coordinator quarterbacks 10,000 employees BY DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR
In the history of the Super Bowl, never has there been such an overwhelming response to the call for volunteers as this year. Fifteen thousand people answered the call; only 10,000 were hired. Doing the hiring was Mahtomedi High School grad Elle Kehoe, class of ‘07. Kehoe works for the Minnesota Super Bowl Host Commit-
tee as director of volunteers. Before that, she worked Super Bowl 50 in San Francisco and the Rio Olympics in between. There are several important prerequisites for the job of professional event planner: a proficiency at Excel, a willingness to travel and abundant energy. When she’s working, Kehoe says, the job is 24/7. But when she’s not working, it’s lengthy vacations in places like Hawaii, Vail and, most recently, Vietnam, where her
older sister Emmy teaches English. Kehoe moves from event to event, working by contract with host committees. After she was hired in September 2016 for Super Bowl 52, she and her small paid staff brought on 500 people to interview candidates for the 10,000 volunteer slots. Volunteers assist visitors at the festival on Nicollet Mall, in the skyways and at hotels. SEE VOLUNTEERS, PAGE 9A

Lawsuit: Property owner claims trespass, city wants trail back BY DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR
PAUL DOLS | PRESS PUBLICATIONS
Riding the weather roller coaster Sarah Rosales and her daughter Marta, 1, take advantage of the sunshine and relatively warm temperature Thursday, Jan. 18 to venture out on one of the cross country ski trails that loop through Tamarack Nature Center in White Bear Township. The additional layer of snow that fell on Monday should help to create favorable conditions out on the trails.
MAHTOMEDI — The dust is not settling on a segment of asphalt trail removed by a homeowner last September. The city considers the piece public right of way and filed a lawsuit against Katherine Verzhbitska-Radzills in November, claiming she unlawfully tore up the bituminous trail located on an easement next to her property at 970 Pineview Court. The trail had been maintained by the city for 23 years before the defendant purchased her single-family home in 2015. In the complaint, city attorney Jay Karlovich said Verzhbitska-Radzills neglected to get permission from adjoining neighbors or the city, and left an abrupt drop-off where the trail had been, creating dangerous conditions. The city noted that the trail was used daily by pedestrians, including children who, since its destruction, “have been forced to traverse Lincolntown Road.” The defendant contends that she could not locate any recorded easement for the walkway in favor of the city or the public, and concludes the property belongs to her. Verzhbitska-Radzills informed the city of her intention to rip up the pavement and cut off access in a Sept. 18 letter sent by her attorney. SEE TRAIL IMPASSE, PAGE 8A
