New color appears true to times for old town hall BY DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR
The color is called bottle green. It's as close to the original as White Bear town hall historians could get after finding a telltale touch of paint. Discovering remnants of the original structure was a big deal to the White Bear Lake Area Historical Society. As Executive Director Sara Markoe Hanson tells it, they worried
vestiges of the era were lost as the 1885 Town Hall was remodeled over the years. “One of our fears was that not much of the original building was left,” recalls Hanson. “As it was dismantled, we discovered more and more original parts and were pleasantly surprised.” As the building was peeled back for restoration, wooden brackets exposed under the eaves were put under mag-
nification. The bottom paint layer showed the original dark green. That's when Hanson put a shoutout on Facebook to the historical community asking for advice. Did anyone have a recommendation as to an appropriate color for the building? “Call Mark Johnston,” came the response. So she did. Johnston just SEE PAINT JOB, PAGE 8A

A breakaway from the deep freeze Matt Hughes and his sons George, 9, and William, 7, take advantage of a welcome break in the string of days with subzero temperatures to practice their hockey skills Sunday, Jan. 7 on the outdoor rink they constructed in the yard of their home in White Bear Lake. Sunday’s high of 31 degrees was the warmest temperature recorded in the area since Dec. 19.
A sports apparel firm founded by White Bear Lake native Michael E. Jordan has made a $16,000 donation to a Minnesota Wild player’s project to help families at a children’s hospital. Jason Zucker of the Wild and his wife Carly are partnering with University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital to build a family suite and broadcast studio. Jordan’s firm, UNRL, made its donation Dec. 28 as Zucker hosted a kickoff to the project at the hospital. Under the name #Give 16 Suite, this will be an 825-square-foot facility to host unique entertainment, experiences, and therapeutic services for pediatric patients and their families, according to a press release from Zucker. Children will be able to produce and host their own shows, such as music request hours, game shows and celebrity visits. The dual-purpose facility will also feature a fully-outfitted theater for kids and families to experience attending an NHL game, complete with ticketed entrance, food and beverage, a large projection screen, and special appearances by players.
