Two track-and-field luminaries, Angie (Guenther) Petruk and the late Wayne Slocum, are the new White Bear Lake Athletic Hall of Fame members.

Guenther, a 2012 graduate, is the Bears’ record holder in shot

put and discus, and placed second and third in the state in discus.

With the Minnesota Gophers, she placed as high as sixth in the Big Ten in hammer throw and ninth in discus. She was Gopher co-captain and qualified for an NCAA meet in hammer.

If you're looking for a way to protect lakes and waterways in Vadnais Heights, the Green Team will hold an adopt-a-drain event at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at Vadnais Heights City Hall, 800 East County Road E in Vadnais Heights.

According to Mayor Mike Krachmer, this is the Green Team's first event. People can help clear leaves, trash and other debris from storm drains in the city.

Adults and children are welcome, and there will be donuts.

The Green Team is a voluntary committee in Vadnais Heights to lead, coordinate and engage the community on ways to incorporate and implement sustainability best practices.

Washington County Parks hosts first Dia de los Muertos Celebración Washington County will feature a Dia de los Muertos Celebración (Day of the Dead) from from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29 at the Lake Elmo Park Reserve Nordic Center.

The Dia de los Muertos Celebración will mark Washington County Parks’ first celebration of the vibrant holiday that began in Mexico and is celebrated annually on Nov. 1

and 2. The holiday is a time to reminisce about departed loved ones and wish them safe travels. The living are also celebrated with family traditions, such as baking pan de muerto and decorating calaveras de alfeñique (sugar candy skulls).

The celebration will feature traditional Latin and Hispanic music, Day of the Dead art activities, a bilingual (Spanish and English) storytime, a hiking scavenger hunt and hot cocoa.

The event is free, and no vehicle permit is required for participants.

The 600-acre property in May Township includes wetlands, lakes and critical habitat areas will be preserved. The undeveloped land in May Township near Stillwater has been owned by the Amherst H. Wilder Foundation since 1957.

The Wilder Forest sale to the Manitou Fund was welcomed by Jim Seidl of the Square Lake Conservancy, who said he holds the fund “in the highest regard.”

Oliver Din, the Manitou Fund's president and CEO, said in a statement that his group is looking forward to "continuing community based environmental focused programs which include education, agriculture, and research."

The land is zoned for conservancy by the May Township Board, and any future use would be required to meet township zoning requirements.

Bill Weigel started working in the sign business when he was in seventh grade. He has been in the business ever since.

“Throughout high school and college I did signs as a parttime job,” Weigel said. “Our bedroom was my workshop for 25 years because we didn't have a garage yet and we've been working out of the house for 40 years with a license.”

Weigel, the owner of Bill Weigel Signs, lives in Vadnais Heights with his wife Jane. He runs the business out of his home.

“We've rebuilt onto our house four times and now have a totally new office,” Weigel said.

“The city was happy to hold a ribbon cutting here to celebrate the new addition.”

Diving experiences become lessons about uniqueness in children's book When I was teaching virtually during the pandemic, I started putting this story that first came from the pages of my journal together into a coherent story. I used a first draft as a story I was writing to model to my students how they could write their own story. Since there wasn’t a lot else to do during the summer of 2020, I started putting the story in actual book form and sent it out to publishers.

Shoreview resident and teacher Kelli Hofmeister recently spoke with the Press about her new children's book, 'The Best Creature on the Reef'. She will have a story time and book signing event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14 at Oldies & Goodies, 4717 Clark Avenue, White Bear Lake.

Q. Why did you decide to write a book?

A. I like to write and often write little notes or stories in a journal when I travel. When you are diving, you can’t talk to anyone so I often imagine stories while swimming through the coral reefs. What would this fish say to the other fish? How would the eel join in?

story and it’s also a fish I love to find.

Each Frogfish is so unique and their facial features just make me think that they have thoughts on the world. I started writing some story notes when I was on a trip to Raja Ampat, Indonesia in 2018. There were so many unique creatures that I had never seen before on this trip so I started thinking about how scuba divers love to find unique creatures that are not necessarily deemed to be “pretty,” but they are pretty to us, and the idea for the book was born.

Q. What messages for your readers - from scuba diving or otherwise- do you incorporate in the book?

A. The message in 'The Best Creature on the Reef' is to feel comfortable in your own skin, to embrace your own uniqueness. I love the way the reef works in harmony. There are so many different creatures to be found, but they all make up one vibrant reef. Each creature has an important and unique role. I think this message resonates with diving but also with kids and adults trying to find their space in the world, trying to embrace their authentic selves.

I love looking for the small stuff when I dive. It’s like looking for treasure to find a nudibranch or arrow crab tucked in the coral, so of course I had to have Nudibranch (the character in my book) teach Frogfish about uniqueness. In life, as in diving, you appreciate it more when you enjoy the small stuff!

Q. Do you have anything else in the works?

A. I have some sketches in my travel journal. I often think of ideas when I’m looking for a book about sharing or tattling or some other topics. I want to teach first graders and I think, how would sea creatures handle this? But I don’t have anything in story form yet.

Q.Tell us a little about yourself.

A. I grew up in Roseville. One day Northland Divers visited my 8th grade biology class at and told us about scuba diving. When I, excitedly, came home with the information packet it turned out that my dad had always wanted to try scuba diving, so we learned together. I currently live in Shoreview, with my husband, Chad, our son, Wesley and our dog, Eva. I teach first grade at Turtle Lake Elementary school. When I’m not teaching, I love to read, travel and of course, write and Scuba dive! In the fall my son and I love to hit up many local farms, pumpkin patches and orchards.

Q. What was your favorite scuba diving experience(s)? Do you have more trips planned?

A. Scuba diving has brought me to so many “once in a lifetime moments” and I am so grateful. During the Raja Ampat trip when I started this book we saw a family of Guitarfish. They look like a stingray/shark hybrid. These sharks were previously thought to be extinct in that area. Egypt and the Red Sea also stands out as a memorable trip full of octopus and Spanish dancer sightings. I’ve swam with manta rays in the Maldives and visited a manta cleaning station in Yap where the fish wanted to clean my ears. My most recent dive trip was to Little Cayman where we saw seahorses and lots of little sea turtles. I’ve been so lucky to do so many dive trips with my dad and also with a fun group of divers that we’ve been diving with for about 20 years.

Evolving rituals

I

spotted the first signs of the upcoming holiday season back in mid-August when a group of Halloween inflatable decorations appeared in a prominent display near the entrance at a local Menards store. Among the festive inflatables was a vintage Volkswagen bus with a skeleton driver and a collection of smiling passengers, including a ghost, ghoul, witch and trio of Jack-o-Lanterns.

Knowing that she and her husband own a vintage VW bus, I passed on this early holiday decoration sighting to our Managing Editor Shannon Granholm. She was a step ahead of me and had already seen and acquired the orange, black and green bus with pumpkin hubcaps. I’d never seen this particular decoration before, so it Angle of was probably a good move to act quickly because a recent online View search showed they were mostly out of stock and becoming hard to Paul Dols find. I’ve finally accepted the ever growing expansion of the holiday retail season, but still marvel at the evolution and transformation of Halloween from what was originally an ancient Celtic ritual celebrating the fall harvest into the second-most popular retail event (behind Christmas) in the United States.

According to the History Channel website and other sources, Halloween’s origins date back more than 2,000 years to the Celtic festival of Samhain and along with celebrating the harvest, it is noted that, with winter approaching, it was also a time that it was believed the veil between the world of the living and the dead was at its thinnest. Bonfires and superstitious costumes make more sense when you start thinking about how scary and uncertain the coming of winter would have been without the abundant food, shelter and modern conveniences we take for granted. It doesn’t seem to be a coincidence that as christianity spread into the Celtic regions, the Catholic Church sought to replace pagan rituals with a church-sanctioned holiday. As a child growing up in a Catholic family, I didn’t analyze or question why All Saints Day conveniently followed Halloween. In grade school we got the day off and usually this time was used to organize and trade the candy that my brothers and I had collected the previous night. The word Halloween has origins in the tradition of All Saints Day being called Allhallows or All-hallow-ma in Middle English and the night before being named All-Hallows Eve. I can appreciate the variety of ways people choose to celebrate Halloween, ranging from costumes and the childhood rite of passage of trick-or-treating to the more globally influenced seasonal celebration of Día de los Muertos (Day of Dead) — with one exception. Maybe it’s the violence we’re exposed to on a daily basis in our society, but for some reason I just can’t stomach the gory, murderous slasher aspect of Halloween that seems to have started with the influence of a series of horror movies in the 1970s and 80s. Personally, I’m drawn to decorations and events that incorporate fire, lights and a bit of imagination and mysticism.

In the coming weeks we can look forward to some local family-friendly Halloween events, including the annual Scare in White Bear 5K run along a torch-lit path near the lake, the Trick-or-Treat event at Tamarack Nature Center and the Halloween Party in Vadnais Heights. If you feel like venturing a little further from home, BareBones is celebrating the 30th year of their puppet pageant — a unique outdoor spectacle consisting of larger-than-life puppetry, stilting, dance, fire, song and music.

Regardless of how we choose to celebrate the rituals of the holiday season, I believe a universal, shared experience in the cycles of life and nature can be found at the heart of most of these rituals and maybe that’s the reason they continue to endure and evolve over time.

Rah! Rah! Rah! for Ski-U-Mah!

ockey is a staple in Minnesota. We are literally called the state of hockey.

There is a whole day in January dedicated to the sport.

As a kid, I never watched hockey.

I didn’t have a real interest in it.

The rules were too confusing for me to learn and I thought it was a bit stupid that the winning team would only win by a goal or two rather than 10 or more. I didn’t find it very Madeline’s entertaining at the time.

Mail When I was 15, Madeline Dolby my dad got season tickets to the Minnesota Gophers men’s hockey team. My mom didn’t have an interest in going and my dad knew I had some interest in hockey from going to hockey games in high school. I played along because in reality, I didn’t have an interest in the game but more what the players looked like.

During high school, I went to a few games mainly because I had a few guy friends on the team and went for the social aspect of it. I would sit in the front row with my best friend and pretend to know what was going on. Honestly, at the time, I had no clue what icing or off-sides

were. Which, looking back now, is embarrassing considering it is not that hard to understand. But I played along because I thought it would make me cool and everyone had the idea that I was this crazy hockey fan because I went to Mariucci Arena every weekend.

It wasn’t until I was a freshman in college that I really got into the games. I finally asked my dad what icing and off-sides meant during a Gopher game because I was tired of still not knowing what they meant after five years.

After that game, I bought a sweatshirt, grabbed one of their posters and hung it up in my bedroom at home. Once I learned the rules and grew up a bit, I stopped worrying about who the cutest player on the team was and actually worried about how well they played.

One would say I became a crazy, super fan.

Since freshman year, I have not missed a Gopher Hockey game since, home or away. My dad and I have gone to almost every single home game at 3M. We have sat in the same seats, bought a malt cup between the second and third period and always take a selfie to send to my mom.

The Gophers have become “our team.” We will sit on the couch in the basement wearing our matching sweatshirts and watch every away game together. We will go over the home game schedule at the kitchen table and talk about the upcoming

season. If I am at a track meet and missing the first period, my dad will text me constant play-by-play updates so I know what is going on. We have followed our favorite players all the way to the NHL, leading us to slowly becoming Colorado Avalanche and Minnesota Wild fans.

Around our birthdays at the beginning of November, we have a “birthday” game where we go out to eat before-hand and celebrate our birthdays with just the two of us and our favorite group of boys.

The first game of the season is on Oct. 13 against my alma mater, the University of St. Thomas at the Xcel Energy Center. You won’t find me sitting behind the Tommies goalie, but the Gophers goaltender wearing the same sweatshirt I got three years ago singing the Minnesota fight song.

If you told me at 15 that I knew the University of Minnesota’s fight song by heart or have spent a majority of weekends chewing my fingernails waiting for a game-winning goal, I would have told you that you were crazy because girls like me do not like hockey for the game, they like it for the players.

But Minnesota, hats off to thee!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR PAID LETTER Candidate is consensus builder We have a White Bear Lake City Council election coming up on Nov. 7. We in Ward 3 are very fortunate to have an experienced candidate, Andrea West, running to represent us. Andrea showed how interested she is in getting to know the residents of Ward 3 when she accepted our invitation and visited our block's "Night to Unite" event, in spite of a heavy downpour that evening.

My good opinion of Andrea West was reinforced when I read her responses which were published in the White Bear Press Voter's Guide 2023. Experience in city government is important to me, and Ms. West has served on the city’s Planning Commission and Housing Task Force.

I was encouraged to read that she supports hiring more firefighters/ paramedics to keep up with the advancing age of our city's residents, who need this service more than ever.

In addressing her vision of what White Bear Lake could be in the next five years, Ms. West is cleareyed about the challenges before us and courageous about offering solutions. Her reputation is one of being a consensus builder. I encourage voters of Ward 3 to join with me in voting for Andrea West for City Council.

PAID LETTER Andrea West for City Council For the past 16 years, I have had the honor of representing Ward 3 and the city of White Bear Lake on our City Council. I have to admit that when I

made the decision not to run for City Council this year, I had concerns about who would be our next council member.

Then I met Andrea West.

Andrea is the best candidate to represent Ward 3. She has the experience of currently serving on the city’s Planning Commission for the past two years, was on the city’s Housing Task Force, and has the career knowledge of proposing, monitoring and following budgets as a longtime nonprofit manager.

Andrea also has a record of community service by serving on the Ramsey County Library Board and neighborhood citizens groups. She and her husband raised their family right here in Ward 3 for almost 30 years, and their children are graduates of White Bear Lake Area High School (Go Bears!).

I believe Andrea has the skill set, personality and ability to work with our current City Council and staff and, most importantly, represent the residents of Ward 3. Her best skill is her ability to listen and then respond while respecting other opinions. The answers that Andrea has aren’t simple, 30-second social media sound bites.

They’re well-researched and thought out. When she is asked a question, she always takes a pause for consideration before she answers.

Andrea West cares deeply about our city. She understands that being elected takes on the responsibility of being a caretaker for one of the most important things in our lives: our home. Home is who we are and the place that we choose to spend our lives and income.

In my opinion, the answer is clear: vote for Andrea West for White Bear Lake City Council, Ward 3.

Peggy Doran, the owner of Margaux's Table and catering company Margaux in White Bear Lake, suffered severe burns while serving dinner at the restaurant. According to the GoFundMe page, Doran was carrying a large pot of boiling pasta water while serving dinner at Margaux a few weeks ago. She tripped and fell which caused scalding burns on her arms, part of her face and the front of her body. She has had two surgeries, where doctors peeled off dead skin before encasing her in bandages.

CHURCH BRIEFS 2 bands perform at St. Stephen festival St. Stephen Lutheran Church will hold a music festival from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Saturday, Oct. 14. The event will feature live music by Old Guys Play the Blues and The Original Standard Deviation. Food will be offered for sale, and a live and silent auction will include artwork, themed gift baskets, and other items ready to be bid on. The silent auction is from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; the live auction begins at 1 p.m.

The event is open to the public and familyfriendly; there will be children’s games and activities in a kid's fun room.

WHITE BEAR LAKE POLICE REPORTS The White Bear Lake Police Department reports the following selected incidents: • Disorderly conduct was reported Sept. 27 in the 1900 block of Buerkle Road.

• Harassment was reported Sept. 27 in the 3500 block of Century Avenue.

• A loose dog was reported Sept.

27 around the 3900 block of Van Dyke Street. The dog was located and brought back to the White Bear Lake Police Department. An ID chip was found and the owner was contacted and picked up the dog.

• An officers took a report of fraud Sept. 27 that occurred in the 2600 block of Sumac Ridge.

No suspect information.

• An officer took a disorderly conduct call Sept. 27 in the 2600 block of County Road E. • Disorderly conduct was reported Sept. 28 in the 1900 block of Buerkle Road.

• An officer took a report of criminal damage to property Sept. 29 in the 4800 block of White Bear Parkway.

• Officers were dispatched Sept.

30 for a 911 hang-up in the block of Bald Eagle Avenue. A White Bear Lake man was was arrested for interfering with a 911 call and domestic assault.

He was transported to the Law Enforcement Center to be processed.

• A motorcycle was reported stolen Sept. 30 near the 3600 block of Highland Avenue.

• A gas drive off occurred Oct. 1 in the 4800 block of Highway 61.

The subject was located and disposed of the pipe. No elements of a crime. No one was arrested and no citations were issued.

• A business in the 2600 block of County Road E requested two patrons be trespassed from the location Oct. 1. Officers completed a trespass for each patron barring them from the business for one year.

• Disorderly conduct was reported Oct. 1 in the 2100 block of 1st Street.

• A road rage incident was reported Oct. 1 at White Bear Avenue and Elm Street.

• A reckless driving complaint was reported Oct. 2 of two motorcycles near the 3500 block of McKnight Road was reported. An officer located the two motorcycle drivers who admitted to driving quickly in parking lot. They were given a verbal warning and advised to vacate. No arrests or citations issued.

• Officers took a report of theft from auto Oct. 2. The incident occurred in the 3900 block of Highland Avenue. Suspect(s) are unknown.

• Officers took a phone call Oct. 2 regarding a neighborly dispute in the 3600 block of Willow An officer took a fraud report Oct. 2 in the 3600 block of Hoffman Road. Loss of $250.

• A complainant came to the Public Safety Building Oct. 3 to report harassment in the 3600 block of Kenny Lane.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office reports the following selected incidents in Birchwood, Dellwood, Grant, Mahtomedi, Pine Springs and Willernie:

Birchwood

• Mail theft was reported Sept.

2 near Cedar Street and Hall Avenue, and multiple pieces of mail were found scattered throughout the city.

Dellwood

• Washington County Sheriff's Office deputies conducted a traffic stop at 11:07 p.m.

Sept. 2 in the 200 block of Dellwood Avenue and issued a citation for speeding in a 35 mph zone.

• A fight involving a half dozen people was reported at 11:31 p.m. Sept. 2 at 7 Vines Vineyard on Dellwood Road.

While en route, deputies received information that the parties involved were starting to leave.

Grant

• A male was arrested at 11:11 p.m. Sept. 1 near Hidden Glade Avenue N. and 100th Street N. for violating an order for protection (OFP), after deputies responded to a suspicious vehicle report and found the violator and the person who took out the OFP in the same vehicle.

The male resisted arrest and was also found to have multiple outstanding warrants out on him.

• A blue Coach purse containing the deed to the complainant's house was reported lost Sept. 5 somewhere near Jamaca Avenue N. and 75th Street N. after the complainant left it on top of her vehicle and started

driving away.

• An unidentified male was arrested for DWI at 5:06 p.m.

Sept. 6 after deputies found him passed out in his vehicle in the 7000 block of 101st Street N. It was also discovered that he had just sideswiped a nearby mailbox.

As deputies surveyed the scene, they discovered open alcoholic beverage containers and drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle.

Mahtomedi

• A child's green bicycle was reported abandoned at the Holiday station on Stillwater Road for the entire week ending on Sept. 2. Deputies contacted Mahtomedi Public Works for removal.

• Deputies conducted a traffic stop for speeding Sept. 3 on Long Lake Road and Dunbar Way and issued a citation to the driver. On Sept. 5, deputies issued a written warning to a motorist on Wildwood Road and Stillwater Road for an undisclosed violation. An unknown motorist was cited Sept. 6 in the 14000 block of Mahtomedi Avenue for speeding 54 mph in a 30 mph zone.

• A motorist was cited at 11:56 p.m. Sept. 7 in the 3000 block of Century Avenue for driving after revocation.

• A different motorist was arrested for DWI at 11:36 p.m. Sept. 8 on Stillwater Road and Wildwood Road following a traffic stop for speeding. After deputies detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the vehicle, they directed the driver to take standardized field sobriety tests, on which he performed poorly. Eventually, the driver provided

Vadnais Heights

• A resident in the 100 block of Primrose Court on Aug. 30 reported a phishing email scam claiming he had a problem with his bank account. The victim called the number provided, purchased $1,000 in gift cards at Walmart and provided the numbers to the scammer.

While he was buying additional cards at Target, an employee advised the victim that he was being scammed.

• Tousley Motor Sports in the 1400 block of County Road E on Aug. 31 reported a fraudulent bank account opened using its identity. After the account was closed, Ramsey County Sheriff's Office deputies advised the complainant about identity recovery steps.

• A Vadnais Heights man, 36, was arrested Sept. 1 in the 3800 block of McMenemy Street for domestic abuse, following a 911 hangup investigation. The case has been forwarded to the city attorney for consideration of charges.

•A St. Paul man, 30, was arrested for gross misdemeanor DWI at 12:24 a.m.

Sept. 2 in a business lot in the 3400 block of Rice Street following a report of a person slumped over inside an idling vehicle still parked in “drive.” After several attempts to wake the driver by pounding on the windows, deputies were finally able to awaken him and at least

a breath test sample containing a 0.16 blood alcohol content.

Pine Springs

• A westbound motorist was cited at 1:25 a.m. Sept. 4 on Highway 36 just east of I-694 for multiple violations, after deputies on patrol observed the vehicle cross the shoulder line and conducted a traffic stop.

• A Minnesota motorist was cited Sept. 4 in the 7500 block of 62nd Street N. for driving with an identification card only and without a proper driver's license, after deputies stopped the vehicle for a suspended object from the rearview mirror.

• Items were reported stolen Sept. 8 from a pontoon boat parked in the 5000 block of Warner Road S. The boat also sustained structural damage.

• Deputies conducted a traffic stop Sept. 9 in the 6000 block of Hilton Trail N. and issued a written warning for undisclosed offenses.

Willernie

• A wallet was reported lost on Leeds Place Aug. 31. The victim's bank card was used at several retailers.

• Stewart Road residents reported a contractor for driving on the neighbor's lawn Sept. 8. The complainant wanted deputies to contact the homeowner to advise them of the situation, as well as ask the contractor to quit driving on the lawn. Deputies advised the homeowner of the situation.

The complainant watched in silence as the intruder took guns, a wallet and items from the refrigerator. As soon as the burglar left his room, the complainant called 911. Arriving deputies found two suspects and the stolen items on the ground outside the apartment building.

• A Vadnais Heights man reported his apartment unit in the 800 block of County Road D burglarized after he arrived home at 2:16 a.m. Sept. 2 to find a balcony door pried open. The complainant's TV and video game system were missing.

• An abandoned backpack containing a handgun with the serial number missing was reported found Sept. 4 near County Road F and Primrose Path and turned over to Ramsey County Sheriff's Office deputies, who placed it into property. The case is under investigation.

White Bear Township

• A resident in the 4300 block of Fisher Lane reported identity theft Sept. 1 after a fraudulent driver's license with the

victim's information and fraudulent checks were used in Idaho to cash out his bank account.

• A Shoreview man reported that two unidentified persons approached his vehicle Sept. 2 as he turned into the Cub Foods parking lot in the 1000 block of Meadowlands Drive and attempted to assault him. Witnesses corroborated the complainant's story, but the suspects fled prior to deputies' arrival.

• A Hugo man reported losing his iPhone in Bald Eagle Otter Lake Park in the 5700 block of Hugo Road Sept. 2.

• Residents in the 4600 block of Greenhaven Drive at 11:42 p.m. Sept. 2 reported juveniles for assault and criminal damage to property. Although deputies gathered evidence, victim statements, photos and witness testimony, no arrests had been made at the time of the report.

• The U.S. Postal Service in the 1000 block of Highway 96 reported criminal damage to property, after the mail collection box in front of the post office was broken into overnight Sept. 3-4. Multiple pieces of mail belonging to many potential victims may have been stolen.

Board Forum Member Yener shared that she attended the COSSBA Urban Board Alliance Symposium in Chicago. She stated it was good but had low attendance and because of that, will not be holding a Symposium, but rolling it into the annual conference.

Member Yener and Chair Forsberg spoke about the importance and need for delegates for the MSBA Delegate Assembly. Member Yener encouraged members to contact her for more information.

A discussion was held regarding SRO’s and the new legislative language.

Ten districts have SRO’s and about half of those districts have pulled SRO’s at this time.

Chair Forsberg shared that Morris Leatherman Company will be presenting at the AMSD Board of Directors meeting this week.

VADNAIS HEIGHTS CITY COUNCIL NOTES • It's National Fire Prevention Month, and the city of Vadnais Heights has declared this week as Fire Prevention Week. The theme this year is “Cooking Safety Starts With You.” Fire Chief Chris Hearden said the focus is to educate members of the public on simple steps they can take to prevent fire in the home when they're cooking, and to keep families safe. Fire department members will visit schools to help educate children and adults on ways they can stay safe while at home or in school. Mayor Mike Krachmer urges residents to develop home fire safety plans and check their batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

local businesses and raffle baskets, and they were really supportive of it,” said Kim Bauer, who organized the event. “We're really excited that we could do something to help the families and just give awareness for the cause.”

Senior Morgan Marx, who has two chemo treatments left, is on the varsity volleyball team. She found out she had leukemia on Sept. 28, 2021.

“The thing with leukemia, is they set you up with a plan right when you get diagnosed,” said Christy Marx, Morgan's mom. “It was a little rough in the beginning, but we fought through it.”

“As a teenager, it can change the direction of their life,” Morgan's dad, Scott, added. “Morgan had two years of missing sports, her friends and just her life.”

Morgan is enjoying her senior year and being back on the volleyball team. After graduation next spring, she plans on going to college. “She's focusing on Iowa State because she really likes it there,” Christy said.

Charlie Huizinga, a fourth grade student at O.H. Elementary School, just finished chemotherapy treatments and is now cancer-free.

“It feels great to be cancer-free,” Charlie said. “But I do have to visit the doctor every two months and then next year every three months and then the next year

every six months.”

Henry Honmyhr, a ninth grader at Mahtomedi High School, was diagnosed with leukemia on Sept. 20.

“He just got out of the hospital from his first round of treatment,” said Henry's mom, Amy. “It's so new to us, and it just feels like you're in the middle of a tornado.”

Amy said Henry will have treatment for 2 1/2 years.

“The first nine months are the most intense, so he doesn't go back to school this year,” she said.

The Orange Out for Leukemia raised $4,005 and the Zephyrs won 3-0. All proceeds will be donated to Children's Minnesota and Fairview Masonic Childrens.

Bauer noted the volleyball program wants to say a huge thank you to all of the families and local businesses that donated items to the event and to everyone who contributed through raffle ticket purchases, silent auction bidding and the chuck-a-duck participation.

“This fundraiser really means a lot to us,” Christy Marx said. “I think it's really good to bring awareness to adults, but also to the kids and how much it's impacting another child's life. Seeing the support from all the other kids is rewarding to know that they feel impacted by it as well, because it's one of their fellow students.”

NAMES IN THE NEWS Caroline Grubs from the Midwest Ski Otters of White Bear Lake has earned a spot as a member of the 2025 USA Water Ski Show Team.

The journey to becoming a member of Team USA is no small feat and Caroline Grubs path to earning her spot was filled with hard work and a love for the sport. Step one in the Team USA selection process began with applications due by July 1.

The selection committee evaluated regional tournament performances, conducted video analysis and created a master skill sheet to assess each candidate’s strengths. After careful consideration, the pool of applicants was narrowed down to the most skilled and talented skiers and drivers and were then invited to a

Midwest Ski Otter teammates, Ryan Hoops of White Bear Lake, Sarah Yost of Scandia and Twin Cities River Rats members Trevor Judd and Lexi Berens. The selection process continued as they trimmed the initial roster of approximately 70 skiers, drivers and announcers down to the 40 that were officially announced.

This marks Grubs second time being named to Team USA. The competition will take place in Mulwala, Australia, in March 2025.

October is Disability Employment Awareness Month in Minnesota. The designation recognizes the skills, experience and dedication that people with disabilities contribute to the labor force and the state's economy.

Martha V. Strus 10/4/1939-10/4/2023.Mom died peacefully on October 4, her 84th birthday, with her family by her side. She was a prayer warrior and servant of God. She is survived by her loving husband Leo and devoted children Laureen Buse (Wayne), Whitney Strus (Linh), and Suzanne Yonker (Rick), along with seven grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren, her brother Ray (Delores) and sister Ruth (Duane), and other family and friends. Bear girls are SEC runners-up after dramatic week

A remarkable gamewinning shot by Abby O’Brien highlighted a strong conference finish by White Bear Lake girls soccer with wins over Stillwater 4-3 and Cretin-Derham Hall 3-1, giving the Bears a second-place finish in the Suburban East Conference.

Playing without their top three scorers, the Bears tripped conference and section rival Stillwater — their first win over the Ponies since 2017 — scoring three goals in the final 17 minutes. Both teams are 11-3-2.

seeing players at new positions, and some of it we will stick to in the playoffs to help us push through.”

Top scorer Jenna Maloy missed her third straight match with a sprained ankle.

Becca Smith was shaken up Wednesday morning when a car in which she was a passenger was struck at an intersection.

Liv Farrell has missed three matches with a concussion.

Maddy Thompson scored in the first half for the Bears, who trailed 3-1 after 50 minutes.

After some shuffling of positions to push for more offense, Gabby Hofeld and Elizabeth Wallek each scored on breakaways to knot the score. With a minute left, after a tripping foul on

Stillwater, O’Brien drilled a free kick from 40 yards that sailed just under the upright and through the goalie’s outstretched hands. O’Brien had two assists previously.

Maloy and Smith returned against CDH and each delivered a goal while Hofeld supplied a goal and two assists. Autumn Maki had four saves in each match.

Woodbury won the Suburban East with an 8-0-1 record. The Bears lost to Woodbury 1-0 and finished 8-1.

The Bears will be seeded second in Section 4AAA behind Woodbury and will host No. 7 Tartan on Wednesday, setting up a likely semi-final rematch with Stillwater on Saturday.

Stillwater’s aerial game riddled host White Bear Lake 38-14 as Pony sophomore quarterback Nick Kinsey threw for 346 yards and four touchdowns, completing 20 of 36 with no interceptions.

For the Bears (1-5), Kesean Lipscomb gained 173 yards in 21 carries. Porter Cleary had a three-yard touchdown and Tomi Animasaun threw to Avian Atkins for a 15-yard touchdown.

Animasaun completed seven of 16 for 125 yards with one interception.

Austin Gibson caught one for 44 yards, Vinny Villella three for 28, Isaac Kibagendi one for 21, and Lipscomb one for 17.

VOLLEYBALL White Bear Lake is 9-11 overall after going 1-6 last week. In conference matches, the Bears lost to Mounds View 2518, 25-23, 25-22 and Roseville 25-20, 25-12, 25-12. In a Burnsville tournament, the Bears beat Randolph 2520, 25-18, then lost to Minneota 25-11, 25-8; Holy Angels 25-13, 25-19; Minneapolis Washburn 15-25, 25-20, 15-12; and Eastview 2522, 25-15.

BOYS SOCCER White Bear Lake closed the regular season with their fifth tie game of the season, against CretinDerham Hall, 1-1. Caleb Anderson scored for the Bears, assisted by Eli Simanek in the first half. Bear goalie Kyle Christensen turned away 12 of 13 shots,

including a late penalty kick with the score 1-1. Luke Madden had the Raider goal. The Bears were 1-4-4 in the Suburban East. The Bears lost to Stillwater 4-0. East Ridge was SEC champion with 8-1 and Stillwater was second at 7-1-1. The Bears (16-5 overall) will start Section 4AAA at topseeded East Ridge on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

TENNIS In Section 4AA, White Bear Lake beat St. Anthony Village 7-0, then lost to Stillwater 5-2 in the second round, ending their dual meet season with a 9-13 record. Against SAV, winning in singles were Elia Groneberg (back from missing two weeks with an injury), Tally Domschot, Elara Kruse and Ivory Drusch. Winning in doubles were Maddie Belisle/Isabel St. John, Josie Guidinger/Sophie Menier and Mallory Peltier/Ava Johnson.

Points against Stillwater came from Domschot and Kruse at 2- and 4-singles. Two doubles matches went three sets.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY White Bear Lake placed 13th of 25 teams in the Lions Invitational at Alexandria. Clara Kolstad placed 45th (20:05), Logan Bailey 61st (20:28), Rosalie Sommers 68th (20:35), Annika Schroeder 86th (20:57) and Ella Hipkins 94th (21:10). Audrey Brownell of StaplesMotley was first in 18:14. Alexandria was team champion.

Bear boys win at U of M gala

An expert’s knowledge of the course was helpful as White Bear Lake placed first among 38 teams in the Maroon division of the University of Minnesota’s Griak Invitational, led by Luke Williams in third place.

The Bears trailed Brandon Valley (S.D.) 94 to 102 at the mid-point but ran stronger in the second half and flipped that score. “Gary Wilson, who designed the course back in the early 90’s, helped us with our meet prep, and how to properly run it,” said Bears coach Dan Kovacich. Wilson, former long-time Gophers coach, now retired, has been a volunteer assistant with the Bears in recent years.

Williams placed third in 16:41 behind two out-of-state runners.

Vaughn Larson was 11th (17:24), Isaac Kolstad 21st (17:43), Max Popp 25th (17:51) and Ryley Murphy 31st (18:02) among 341 runners. This was the

The top five teams in Maroon were the Bears with 97, Brandon Valley 102, Two Rivers 133, Winona Cotter 275 and Champlin Park 301. With 116 teams from several states, the Griak, always the state’s largest meet, is divided into Championship, Gold, and Maroon races.

The Bears then placed fourth of 24 teams in the Alexandria Lions Invitational, which always has a strong state-wide field. Top five were Edina with 93, Stillwater 112, Mounds View 112, White Bear Lake 160, and Marshall 165. Williams placed seventh (16:52), Larson 21st (16:29), IKolstad 22nd (16:32), Popp 46th (16:55) and Murphy 66th (17:16) among 165 runners. “We left this meet with confidence going into our championship season,” Kovacich said.

Alec Mahoney led Mahtomedi’s 34-18 win over CretinDerham Hall by scoring all five touchdowns on runs of 61, 23, 11, eight, and two yards, while rolling up 241 yards in 30 carries. The 5-foot-10, 172-pound senior has rushed for 788 yards and 12 touchdowns in six games, averaging 8.9 yards per carry. He is also a sprinter on the track team and co-captain in both sports.
