The future of sustainable energy is changing fast, and Zeus Electric Chassis in White Bear Lake is one of the innovative businesses riding in on the storm front.

The business started in Lindstrom, but opened a new workshop in White Bear Lake in April 2021.

Engineer and founder Bob Grinstead had already been working on the plans for an electric work vehicle nearly seven years when he was introduced to Wayne Kugel, who invested in the business and now serves as CEO.

Olympic hockey coach hails from White Bear

White Bear Lake resident Joel Johnson was named coach of the USA women’s hockey team for the 2022 Winter Olympics — six weeks after being named coach for University of St. Thomas as it enters the ranks of Division I next season.

“It is an incredible honor to be given this opportunity as it simply doesn’t get any more special as an athlete or a coach than to represent your country at the highest level,” Johnson responded in a press release. “I’m very humbled, and

consider it a privilege to work with what I know will be a tremendous group of athletes and staff as we prepare for Beijing 2022.”

Johnson has been defensive coach for University of Minnesota women’s team for 11 years, helping the Gophers win six NCAA titles.

He held the title of interim head coach for the Olympic team for a few months before the Olympic Committee made it official Thursday.

Johnson is also head coach of Team USA for the IIHF World Championship slated for Aug. 20-31 in Calgary, Alberta. He coached Team USA to championships in

the 2018 Four Nations Cup and the 2019 IIHF World Championships.

Named in June to the St.Thomas position, Johnson stated that the Tommies’ program has “a great foundation of success, and I look forward to continue building upon that.”

He added, “I believe St. Thomas is uniquely positioned to attract and develop the very best student athletes not only from the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota, but from across North America.

The excellence in educational opportunities along with the campus-life experience is unique and exceptional.”

Playing in Division III, St. Thomas has been one of the top MIAC teams for several years.

St. Thomas was forced out of the MIAC last year due to its dominance over smaller rivals in most sports.

Johnson and his wife Shannon have a son, Jacob, and a daughter, Megan, who played hockey for Mahtomedi High School and currently plays for Bethel University.

Johnson starred in hockey, soccer and baseball at Bethel University. He started his coaching career heading Bethel’s men’s hockey and women’s soccer teams.

Six A-boats set sail for races Six boats raced July 26, still a few boats fewer than the total fleet due to summer vacations, and other conflicts. "It was hard to put crews together," said owner Gene Altstatt, who races The Robinson.

Skipper Lee Alnes and his crew won both races of the evening in W25. Taking second in both races was W88 skippered by Larry Pardee. In August, the A-boats will drop down to one race Monday evenings due to less daylight hours with the last competition on Labor Day.

3M Open brings world to ‘front step’ of Blaine The PGA Tour recently made a stop in Blaine as 72 professional golfers braved the heat and hit the links of TPC Twin Cities for the 2021 3M Open. Tournament winner 26-year-old Cameron Champ took home the trophy and more than $1.1 million dollars shooting -15 for the weekend, but Champ’s financial prize does not begin to compare to the massive economic impact the tournament has had on the city of Blaine.

TPC Twin Cities is a championship golf course designed by golfing legend Arnold Palmer and University of Minnesota alumnus and professional golfer Tom Lehman. The course opened in 2000 and quickly became a stop on the senior tour for the 3M Championship in 2001. The course hosted this event for 18 years until 2019, when the PGA Tour debuted its first tournament at TPC Twin Cities with the 3M Open. Now the course has completed its third year of a seven-year contract with the PGA, and as local businesses are beginning to move out of the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament and its economic influence are huge for the city of Blaine.

“Any time you get to bring the world to your

front step, that is just absolutely an amazing opportunity,” said Blaine Mayor Tim Sanders. “There is a huge economic impact, and I feel like our businesses, our restaurants and our amenities deserve that economic impact right now after everything they have gone through.”

Months of planning went into creating a successful event for all parties involved. In addition to close work with various groups such as 3M, the PGA, the city of Blaine and Anoka County, safety for spectators, competitors, staff and local citizens has been at the forefront of the agenda.

TPC Twin Cities is unique for a PGA Tour course because it is located within a residential neighborhood.

Because residents were in close proximity to a professional sporting event, the implementation of various safety measures was necessary for the tournament to commence smoothly.

“We have done an excellent job working with other local law enforcement, like the Anoka County Sheriff’s Department, to really make sure that it’s as safe as possible,” said Sanders.

In addition to the significant boost it provided to Blaine’s local economy, the 3M Open was a huge treat for local golf fans following the lack of spectators or sponsors at the 2020 event.

The city took another economic hit when it canceled the USA Cup at the National Sports Center in 2020. As Minnesota slowly begins to emerge from a difficult year and a half, the city of Blaine is ready for sports and recreation to regain its stature as a sports hub.

“We are a sports recreation community. We have embraced that. We know that sports and recreation are huge drivers for our economy and for the families that live here and the visitors that come to participate,” said Sanders.

“We absolutely relish the partnership with the PGA Tour and we are grateful that we are able to host them.”

The tournament is expected to have around a $50 million impact on the region, with a bulk of that sum staying in Blaine. And as local businesses begin adjusting back to normal life, the 3M Open serves as a major economic lift for the north metro and the city of Blaine.

“It is a real catalyst for our businesses, our restaurants and our other amenities,” said Sanders. “There is just a lot of momentum right now in the metro, and in Blaine in particular, as people are discovering what a great place it is to raise a family; it’s a great place to visit and an even better place to stay.”

States of mind

T

hose of us who live within a few miles of the border are well aware of the interstate rivalry between Minnesota and Wisconsin. I personally think that we have more in common with each other than differences, but have to admit that I’m not thrilled (and have to suppress some territorial impulses) when I see the overt display of Green Bay Packer colors during football season.

This mostly friendly, but occasionally heated, rivalry is explored in detail by a couple of former Press Publications employees via an online audio podcast titled “Minnesconsin/Wiscosota.” The curiosity and extensive experience of journalists Mark Nicklawske and Keith Uhlig is evident as they playfully debate and explore a variety of topics including, but not limited to, cheese (of course), bratwurst, the best regional candy, road trips, both urban Angle of and rural bicycling, the magic (and View danger) of thunderstorms and state parks. Mark was a regional editor Paul Dols during his time at the Press and currently lives in Duluth. Keith was the editor of the St. Croix Valley Press (now the Lowdown) and lives in Wausau, Wisconsin.

I suspect that I might be somewhat biased about the podcast because I enjoyed working with both Mark and Keith and have also occasionally accompanied them on their outings. Last summer Mark rode his bike out to Stillwater and we rolled downtown and then pedaled along the loop trail that circles across the St. Croix Crossing bridge into Wisconsin, back across the Historic Lift Bridge and then up the Brown’s Creek Trail, which connects to the Gateway Trail. Last week friends from Minneapolis pedaled out for a visit and we completed the same loop. One of them commented that the Brown’s Creek segment, with its sun dappled semi-shaded light, was arguably one of the most pleasant trail segments in the region.

I was present during one of the stories Mark and Keith recounted in their Magic of Thunderstorms podcast segment. It was during an early summer kayaking trip up on Lake Kabetogama in Voyageurs National Park. We had successfully paddled across the lake and were setting up our campsite on the northern shore when one of the loudest sounds I’ve ever heard in my life shocked us into attention. Lightning had struck a mature pine tree on a rocky point near our campsite, followed by rain. Even though it was raining, the tree burned from the inside for hours before it eventually cracked and fell into the water. I realize memory is fickle, but one of the details I still recall from this incident was the look of grave concern on the face of the experienced guide and outfitter who shuttled out provisions and fi rewood for us just before the thunderstorm hit. After looking up and seeing what was developing in the sky, he hurriedly dropped off our stuff and then gunned his powerboat back out across the big lake. One of the only other times I’ve seen a similar expression was on the face of the captain of a fishing boat on Lake Superior right before he instructed us to pull in our lines before speeding back to the harbor ahead of a quickly developing storm.

The lesson I’ve gleaned from these experiences and a host of other misadventures, is to never underestimate and always respect the power of nature.

Mark and Keith both have international travel experiences, so I believe that their podcast is not based on a strictly provincial point-of-view. Instead, it calls attention and elaborates on some of the world-class attractions, amenities, quirks and history that contribute to the unique character and quality of life in this part of the country. Making progress on a better I-494

o matter where you live in the seven-county metro area, if you drive a car, you will eventually get stuck in traffic on Interstate 494. It is one of the region’s most vibrant, growing areas with the Mall of America, the airport, hotels, businesses — even IKEA. Trucking and freight associations have named this area one of the most congested bottlenecks in the country — truckers know traffic.

The good news is we’re making progress on a better I-494.

Recently, Legislator the U.S Department of Lingo Transportation awarded Charlie Zelle MnDOT and the Met Council a $60 $ million illi grant, through the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America program, to help move the $273 million construction project forward. While MnDOT will be responsible for the hard work of renovating I-494, the Met Council is playing a key role in working with the cities, counties, and communities

along the route that will use the roadway.

In developing the region’s current Transportation Policy Plan, we learned from communities about how this key transportation corridor should look in the future. It will include bikeways and pedestrian bridges to connect the business and residential activities on each side of the freeway.

It’s also important to acknowledge that there will probably always be congestion in an area that is this economically vibrant – the congestion is a sign of a healthy economy. However, this rebuild is being done to minimize the number of hours of congestion and give people the ability to either take transit or use an express lane to opt out of congestion.

The I-494 project will include an E-ZPass lane to accommodate transit and motorists who want to pay to jump out of the slower-moving traffic. (As of August 2, E-ZPass is the new name for our MnPass Express lanes. The change is being made so the labels for express lanes on interstate freeways are consistent across state lines.)

Transit is also a big part of the corridor’s future. Right now, construction work on the METRO Orange Line bus rapid transit project is well towards completion for service opening later this year. This new service will give people on the I-35W corridor a fast and frequent one-seat ride to and from downtown Minneapolis, all day long. The Orange Line will have a dedicated, busesonly lane going under I-494 to serve stations on 76th Street and American Boulevard.

It’s hard to understate the impact of the I-494 corridor on the economy of our region, and thus our state. The Met Council’s research show that on any given day, motorists from 86 of Minnesota’s 87 counties use this roadway.

By reducing congestion and improving access to other modes of transportation, we are revitalizing a roadway that will continue to help build a thriving region.

On Saturday, July 24, my husband had an accident while working in his workshop. I was unable to stop the bleeding, so I called 911. I want everyone to know how blessed we are to live in an area where we have such excellent professional and compassionate care available to us. All who responded —Washington County Sheriff and Mahtomedi paramedics — could not have been nicer or more helpful. Unfortunately, these days you hear frequent criticism of these people, but we found this couldn't be further from the truth. Although I don't know your names, I need to extend a heartfelt “thank you.” You are my heroes!

The project team assumed there was a need and never asked the public if they really wanted it. However, it is typical when asked that people will say they support it, thinking that they will never use it and that the cost is not out of their pockets. So, when Victoria Reinhardt says that she will rely on the scientists and experts to give her the answers, she is basically using the Soviet-style fiveyear planning approach where experts to decide what the people need. A middle school math student has the expertise to look at the numbers and understand that this Rush Line project will fail to meet expectations.

Comments about anti-Rush Line

I have watched the progress of the Rush Line project and attended many of the meetings where the design of the project was discussed. Never was there a serious discussion by the planning committee as to the real need or justification of the project. The project was justified by using population projections and estimates of potential ridership that have proven to be wrong in the past. The goal of the early planning before public input was to determine what kind of a project the federal government would support with its matching funding. The Rush Line was the lowest level of transit design that could receive any matching federal funds. This means that our transportation

Are we following the science, or the junk science?

In March of 2020 Gov. Walz said we should give up our personal freedoms for “two weeks to flatten the curve.” It was meant to make sure our hospitals weren’t overwhelmed. The current weekly case average for Minnesota is 397, at the peak in Nov., it was 7,052. Our current weekly fatality rate average is 2, at the peak in Dec. it was 94. Yes, the Delta variant is a lot more transmissible, but it isn’t anywhere near as deadly. This week, the CDC and state health officials recommended a return to wearing masks

and that all students should wear masks when they return to school in the fall. According to Yahoo News, these recommendations are being made based off of a report that 75% of the cases in a recent Massachusetts outbreak were people who were vaccinated. It's worth noting that none of the cases in that group have been fatal and that only 4 out of roughly 1,000 confirmed cases resulted in hospitalization. Yahoo goes on to report that the other data the CDC has used to justify these recommendations came from an unpublished study and one from India that consisted of 100 people, which included a vaccine that is not used in the U.S. and has not been peer-reviewed. This is junk science. There is no reason why our children should be forced to wear masks while at school. Children are at the lowest risk of infection and essentially have a statistically immeasurable fatality rate from the illness. If the White Bear Lake School Board and Superintendent Kazmierczak ignore the real science and choose politics over facts on this by forcing our children to wear masks this fall, the voters of White Bear Lake should elect board members who do follow the science. It is time for the voters of White Bear Lake to remind these public “servants” that they derive their power from the consent of the governed.

It is time for the voters of White Bear Lake to end this “two weeks to flatten the curve,” and reclaim all of the personal liberties that were taken from us under that claim.

COMMUNITY BRIEFS Old graffiti discovered at Birchwood Village Hall The city of Birchwood, with help from the White Bear Lake Historical Society, is asking community members for their help in learning more about graffiti that was recently uncovered during the Birchwood Village Hall renovation. The crew prepping the building for painting discovered the graffiti, which appears to read “Jew Stomper.”

Research seems to determine the spray paint used came into use in 1949 and the area on the building now exposed was covered in the 1970s, so it is believed the building was vandalized in that time frame. Time to start training After skipping a year because of the pandemic, the annual Shortest Marathon will resume on Sept. 11. The race begins at 11 a.m. at the intersection of Bald Eagle Avenue and Third Street.

The event is a one-block run that ends at Second Street.

A fundraiser for the White Bear Area Food Shelf, the event raised $11,510 in 2019, and a total of $84,742 in the eight years it has taken place.

“Thanks to all the volunteers and many participants, we have been able to have eight successful Shortest Marathons,” says Gloria Carpenter, event organizer. “The T-shirts and food are paid for by our generous local sponsors — Donatelli's, Abbott Paint, White Bear Country Inn, VFW #1782 and Auxiliary — so every dime raised goes directly to the food shelf. Let's all help fight this war on poverty.”

Other event activities include a carbload featuring White Castle hamburgers sponsored by Mueller Mortuary, bottled water provided by LaBelle Realty midway through the race, and Caribou coffee and donut holes from

Grandma's Bakery at the finish line.

The first 300 participants who register will receive a T-shirt that reads “I Finished the Food Shelf Marathon.”

Shirts can be picked up at the food shelf on Friday, Sept. 10, where participants can take a tour and enjoy a Subway sandwich. Shirts can also be picked up the day of the marathon.

The event is family-friendly, and wheelchairs, walkers and strollers are welcome. Parking is available at St. Mary's Church.

“For a donation of $35 per adult and $15 per child, you can make a difference in someone’s life who is having a temporary, difficult financial time,” said Carpenter.

‘Reel’ fun with Cub Scouts Cub Scout Pack 439 invites boys and girls in kindergarten through fifth

grade and their families for some fishy fun from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 23 at the Veterans Memorial Park fishing pier next to the White Bear Lake VFW. Participants will learn how to tie a hook, deliver the perfect cast and catch fish.

The fishy fun is a recruitment event for Cub Scouts. All new kids who sign up to join Cub Scouts will receive a free fishing pole, a water bottle, and a T-shirt.

The Cub Scout program is designed around active involvement. Hands-on activities are used to achieve the aims of Scouting: citizenship training, character development and personal fitness.

Sheriff’s office investigating dog poisoning in Hugo A Hugo couple is still trying to wrap their heads around what

happened to their dogs.

“We are all still in shock,” Kelly Trepanier said.

Trepanier, had already left for work. Around 9:30 a.m. Kelly was just about to hop into the shower when she heard one of her dogs, Ruby, shrieking outside.

“I ran out there and she was seizing and convulsing … I started calling her name and I ran down there and her eyes were all rolled back in her head,” Kelly recalled. She ran to grab her phone to call the vet when she noticed her other dog, Duke, was also lying on the floor shaking and drooling.

Her primary vet recommended Kelly take both of the dogs to an emergency vet right away. Kelly, along with her stepson Nathan, immediately packed up the dogs and headed to the Animal Emergency and Referral Center (AERC) in Oakdale.

“Ruby just laid on the floor the whole way. I thought she was going to die any second,” Kelly said. “She just seized the whole way.”

While at the vet, the doctors were trying to figure out what might have caused such a reaction in the dogs: moldy food, bluegreen algae or another poisonous substance.

Kelly explained it is not uncommon for her dogs

to swim in water, as they have ponds on their property in rural Hugo.

After spending all day at AERC, Kelly and Chris had to make the gut-wrenching decision to put Ruby down. Although both dogs received the same treatments, Ruby was not responding the same way and there was too much neurological damage from the several hours of seizures. Duke had to spend the night in the hospital, but is back home now recovering.

“We brought (Ruby) home to bury her, and while I was walking around the yard I was thinking ‘Should I even let my grandkids out here?’” Kelly said. She was walking around her yard right in front of their sliding glass door when she found two large piles of vomit.

She started looking through the vomit and noticed what appeared to be miniature hot dogs as well as a “blue-green metallic” stuff.

The Trepaniers have sent off the stomach contents to the University of Michigan for testing. The doctors at the university will perform a gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GCMS) analysis, an analytical

“I’m hoping they can tell me exactly what is in it, because we are going to pursue this as far as we can,” Kelly said.

The Trepaniers are thankful that Duke survived and that their

new puppy, 6-month-old Roscoe, did not ingest whatever the other two dogs did.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

ELECTRIC TRUCKS: White Bear company innovators of work vehicles FROM PAGE 1

Zeus electric vehicles are mid-size work vehicles—larger than a pickup truck, but smaller than a semi. The frame can be customized and adapted to many purposes, including delivery trucks, cherry pickers, dump trucks, buses and more.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re a dump truck, or a service truck, or a pumper truck, we can use the same suspension packages and frames as modules. So it’s kind of Lego-like,” Kugel said.

Since electric vehicles need to be recharged, there are a lot of questions about how the trucks will work in the field. Kugel said it’s all about designing each truck for its specific purpose from the ground up.

“We are selling to vocations,” he said. “So people that are plowing roads, putting up cables, digging ditches. How far are they going, how often are they stopping, how cold do they need to keep their cabin in the summertime, how warm do they need it in wintertime? We have an application, then we right-size the energy storage to meet what you need on a daily basis. So we’re trying to change the way you ask about energy.”

Grinstead called it “the other green meat” – helping businesses decide which options make the most sense for both sustainability and economics.

“It’s not hard to electrify work trucks,” he said. What will be more difficult are meeting the barriers to making the switch from fossil fuels to electric energy. “It has to be sustainable. We have a model that does that. It’s just a matter of time,” Grinstead said.

The Zeus team didn’t know until they moved in that White Bear Lake is a Greenstep City. Greenstep Cities are focused on meeting sustainability and quality-of-life goals to improve the community, which makes it a fitting location for Zeus.

“We really like the White Bear area,” Kugel said. “The customers can fly in, we can go for a nice meal; it’s just a great community.”

Zeus works with many partners both local and across the nation to build its electric vehicles. The motors used in the work trucks come from New Ulm, hydraulics and electronics are handled by the Nott Company in Arden Hills,

and assembly will take place at Choctaw Manufacturing Defense in McAlester, Oklahoma.

“We’re the only business model out there that uses this interlocking technology,” Kugel said. “Our expertise is assembling and building the solution.

We have patents on our look, on how the truck is constructed, but all the rest, we depend on our partners. We don’t have to design a garbage truck. We don’t have to design a bus. They know better than we do. We just have to focus on our solution. That’s why I think at the end of the day, we’re going to be the best out there.”

Zeus is currently still in its testing and validation stage, but is scheduled to send its first five trucks to the Sacramento Municipal Utility District near the end of 2021. The implementation of these utility vehicles will be documented and reported in a six-month case study for other truck fleets interested in making the transition to electric power.

Human rights commission to be considered by council

Does Vadnais Heights need a human rights commission?

Vadnais Heights for Change thinks so.

The ad hoc volunteer group was formed last year to effect what it sees as needed change in the city of nearly 15,000 people. Heather Gustafson heads up the group.

In response to a question from the Vadnais Heights Press, she said in an email, “I’d like to know why anyone thinks we don’t need a Human Rights Commission?

Our current City Council is entirely made up of white individuals, and with homogenous leadership comes potential for blind spots.

Even the best-intentioned

white individuals don’t necessarily hear the stories or understand the complexities of every person living in their community, especially those who are fearful of interacting with government officials, don’t have time or don’t know how to do so.”

Gustafson cited the actions of former City Council members Craig Johnson and Terry Nyblom as the catalyst for the organization. Nyblom was arrested in 2017 on suspicion of domestic assault and interfering with a 911 call.

Johnson resigned last year after being confronted at a council meeting over racist posts he made about Muslims on social media.

Members of Vadnais Heights for Change spoke at the July 20 council meeting, along with

individuals from the city’s Community Engagement Committee. Gustafson was the first to step up to the podium to read a statement from Leslie Duling McCollam. “If the city wants to engage with the community, the creation of a human rights commission is one way to start,” McCollam wrote. “Vadnais Heights cannot serve people it doesn’t see or hear.”

Jesse Lee, who grew up in Vadnais and moved back to the city, said there is a lot of “generational racism” in the city and advocated for a commission as a place where people of diverse backgrounds, ideologies and religions could bring their concerns.

Brion Curran said tearfully, “I love Vadnais Heights. But am I afraid to put a rainbow

flag on my house? Yes! And that’s why we need a human rights commission. I hope you can hear our message. I don’t have the confidence … to let people know who I am, because of the messages I’ve received from this community and some of the messages that I have seen come from the City Council and the lack of support I’ve seen for the diverse community that we do have.

Judy Lissick cautioned, “If you don’t stand up for a human rights commission, you’ll be behind the eight ball.”

Barbara Clark testified, “There’s implicit bias and unconscious bias in this town. A human rights commission would give our community a chance to pause, to get all the information and make decisions. There’s a difference between acting on first impulse and acting appropriately.”

Council Member Erick Goebel made a motion to include discussion of a human rights commission at a future council workshop meeting.

It was seconded by Council Member Steve Rogers. A workshop discussion is the first step to placing a matter on the council agenda.

A transformer on Miller and 5th Street shorted out around 8 a.m. Friday morning, causing a power outage in downtown White Bear Lake and surrounding neighborhoods. The 5th Street transformer is the main feeder line for the area. Power was restored by Xcel Energy within an hour.

Following the outage, the 617 bar reported the smell of smoke. The fire department investigated and did not find any sign of fire. It was later determined the smell was caused by a fuse box.

White Bear Lake engineers find their niche

President of Reigstad Engineering Gordon Reigstad moved to White Bear Lake in 1989 with his family. Now, more than 30 years later, his sons Jared Reigstad and Jason Reigstad have helped their father expand the firm and develop a new product that will change the landscape of construction moving forward.

Gordon earned his Ph.D. in structural engineering from the University of MinnesotaTwin Cities and started Reigstad Engineering in 1979, a structural engineering company that works primarily in the design of commercial buildings. Since then, the firm has worked on projects such as both Grand Casino buildings in Hinckley and Mille Lacs as well as MGM and Hard Rock hotel project across the country.

Despite the firm’s success over the years, Gordon became curious about an overlooked construction issue that engineers deemed “a contractor’s problem” for decades. But after years of research and looking at items and resources from multiple different industries in new ways, Gordon and Reigstad Engineering have found a solution.

Large commercial buildings are often built using cast-inplace concrete. This is when concrete for the building is poured at the construction site.

After the concrete has been poured, the structural slab or beams are post-tensioned, a technique that strengthens the concrete to withstand various forces — including tension — that it may endure under loading conditions.

Post-tensioning involves the placement of steel tendons, or cables, inside plastic ducts or sleeves that are positioned in

the forms before the concrete is placed. After the concrete cures, generally a period of weeks, the tendons are put in tension. When constructing a large building using castin-place and post-tensioned concrete, industry practice has been to leave a strip down the middle of the pour where concrete is omitted. This strip is often designated as a “pour strip.” These 3-to-5-foot-wide strips in the concrete are used to control and compensate for shrinkage, creep and elastic shortening in the concrete.

The strips are left open for 30 to 60 days before they are finally filled in with concrete to complete the continuity of the slab. For decades, the pour strip method has been a norm within the construction industry, but as problems in efficiency, safety, quality and cost arise from this method of construction, Gordon was committed to finding a better solution.

“We are having fun,” said Gordon. “It’s just a different way to apply our engineering.”

His solution is called PS=Ø, or “pour strip zero,” a mechanical rebar splicing system used to eliminate pour strips while accommodating volume change in concrete slabs and providing structural continuity. The product provides a way to connect reinforcing steel, or rebar, from one side to the other of a concrete slab without the gap, while still allowing the concrete to move as it shrinks.

After the concrete has finished shrinking, a high-strength grout is poured in before the entire slab is allowed to settle.

organization devoted to developing technical standards and certification programs.

The process began in 2014 during a hotel project in Gulfport, Mississippi, on which Reigstad Engineering was involved. Gordon began rethinking how items from other industries could be used in cast-in-place construction.

“I think the beauty of the product is that it's not a totally brand new concept. It’s a lot of people taking things from other industries and applying them in other places,” said Jared Reigstad, the firm’s engineering co-vice president.

“It’s simple, but these pour strips just haven’t been dealt with. People have totally overlooked them.”

Despite its seeming insignificance in a large construction project, PS=Ø can help save a construction crew months of work and hundreds of thousands of dollars a month.

“It’s really something that causes a lot of expense and lack of productivity and safety issues in construction,” said Jared. “We are seeing this as changing the industry moving forward for this type of construction. Our goal is to have it used all over the nation

and in 10 years from now, it is the only way pour strips are done because it’s such a good idea.”

In just a few short months, the Reigstads have already sold thousands of PS=Ø products. One of their clients, constructing a hospital in Overland Park, Kansas, reported back to say the device saved the company two months on the job just to complete the last few floors of the building, and saved them a half million dollars per month.

“We are engineers, we solve problems,” said Gordon. “Not only do you save money and save time, you actually get better quality.”

As the Reigstads expect an increasing demand for PS=Ø, they are hoping to use their momentum to possibly solve other problems within the construction industry.

“From revenues from pour strip zero, we have a lot of other ideas … we would actually like to start more of a development company, too, that develops more construction products that are going to solve more construction problems that have been overlooked,” said Jared.

Gordon added, “That’s the advantage of having two sons in the business, because they take on the heavy lifting in the design company so I have more time to think about all these things that have been challenges for me and my career.”

Jared and Jason both live in the White Bear Lake area within a 10-minute drive of their parents’ house, allowing grandkids to visit grandma and grandpa and families to spend time together on the lake. Their close-knit family bond allows them to work effectively together and, despite the occasional challenges, the family-oriented engineers are ready to tackle new and interesting challenges together in the future.

“It has its challenges. It’s not always easy. But we have found ways for everybody to have their own areas, but we also work together,” said Gordon. “Let’s fix some of these problems and maybe they’ll turn out to be pretty good financially, as well for the future and for our grandkids.”

Waterskier injured during performance A GoFundMe site has been created for Dan Kohl to raise funds for medical expenses as a result of injuries incurred during a Bald Eagle Waterski Club performance on July 29.

A passionate waterskier who had “retired” from performing regularly with the club to spend more time with his family and focus on his wedding, Dan volunteered to

fill in as a guest skier for the evening.

According to the GoFundMe site, Dan was basing the final pyramid, and lost his balance and fell backward. The skiers above him funneled down and fell onto him. He suffered a facial laceration and multiple broken bones in his cheek, upper jaw, and sinus area. He will need surgery to fix the

broken bones, and possibly plastic surgery to fix the scarring from the laceration.

The goal of $6,500 will help Dan cover copays and deductibles for the surgeries, and lost wages during the recovery period.

Ev spent his career as a Facility Planning and Environmental Engineer before retirement and was later involved with boy scout troop 434 and also served on several city planning committees. He loved camping, travel, and anything Disney. He had a generous spirit and loved to bestow many surprise gifts upon his children, grandchildren, and nephews.

She spent many years involved in her church and leadership of Via de Cristo retreats, and relied on her trust in the Lord to guide her through life’s challenges. Solid performance for local sailor at Olympics

Lara Dallman-Weiss, the Olympic Games sailor with local roots, and her partner Nikki Barnes, were holding ninth place in the two-person dinghy competition in Tokyo as of press time Monday.

Dallman-Weiss and Barnes stayed in contention with a second-place finish in the second race Sunday, the fourth day of competition, after placing 19th in the first race of the day.

Their event is officially known as the 470 class.

The top 10 among 21 teams after Monday’s two races will advance to the finals Wednesday. The top three get gold, silver and bronze medals.

Dallman-Weiss, 30, a Shoreview native and 2007 graduate of Mounds View High School, grew up sailing at White Bear Yacht Club. She attended Eckerd College in Florida to continue racing.

Two years ago, she joined forces with Barnes, a Coast Guard officer. They are based

in Miami.

Dallman-Weiss commented on their dramatic turnaround Sunday in a press release from US Sailing. “In our first race today, we didn’t happen to have the best first heat and we weren’t able to come back after that,” Dallman-Weiss said, adding that hot, bright conditions were a factor.

In their second race, they had an “O flag” — a signal from the race commute to indicate that pumping the sails is allowed during racing — the whole time.

“And I had a fire lit in me after the first race,” she said. “In the second race, we worked really well together and it was a constant negotiation between working on height, speed, and being physical.”

The Olympic Games started July 23 and will end Aug. 8.

Ferlic places in top half at Olympic steeplechase

Mason Ferlic, the Olympic team member from Roseville with White Bear Lake roots, placed 21st of 44 entrants in the 3,000 meter steeplechase preliminaries Friday in Tokyo. While not advancing to the finals, he finished in the top half.

The former NCAA and Big Ten champion at Michigan had a time of 8:30.23 in Tokyo. He had qualified for Team USA with a third-place 8:22.05 in the Olympic Trials in Oregon.

Ferlic, who’ll turn 28 Friday, attended Mounds Park Academy in Maplewood where he won state titles in cross country, the 1600, and 3200.

His grandfather, Dan Ferlic, lives in Birchwood. His father, Mike, of Roseville, played soccer for White Bear Mariner High School. His aunts Laura, Lisa, and Terry were distance runners for Mariner.

Hailey Wolgamot, 15, of Mahtomedi, has been competing in water skiing since age eight. She loves the sport, and has started competing in tricks and jumping, as well as slalom. Hailey will be a tenth grader at Hill Murray High School in the fall, and practices on White Bear Lake.

Recent White Bear Lake Area High School grads Joey Schulte, Matt Weiman, and Chris Bieniek decided to run the slalom course on White Bear Lake in a canoe. They ran the course four times, practicing speed and maneuverability. Their fastest time was 2:28.76. It is unknown if there is a faster time through the course by canoe.

Two local athletes earned secondplace finishes in the Midwest Regional Waterski Tournament last weekend, encompassing 12 states, to qualify for nationals.

Evelyn Duvall of White Bear Township, competing in the Women 6 division (age 60-64), placed second in slalom (76.25 buoys) and second in tricks (720 points).

Hailey Wolgamot of Mahtomedi, competing in the Girls 4 division (age 14-15), placed second in slalom (82.5 buoys); ninth in tricks (1150 points); and ninth in jump (38 feet).

The regionals were held Friday through Sunday in Wilmington, Illinois. The top five in each event advance to nationals, to be held at the same site Aug. 8-14.
