The ‘meat guy’ expresses gratitude to those who serve Forty years of wild game feasts that fed as many as 800 guests on behalf of wildlife conservation are a thing of the past now, due to the pandemic. But that didn’t stop the dinners’ founder, Rich Bohaty, from continuing his passion to give back.

The man with a hunter’s heart has a new mission that serves both past and current members of the military, as well as first responders during the holidays.

The giving campaign is called Hunters Harvest, a nonprofit started by Bohaty and his family, whose mission is to ensure no one who serves goes hungry. In keeping with that mission, they are partnering with the Minneso-

ta Assistance Council for Veterans, or MACV. Staffed mostly by retired military members, the nonprofit organization was established in 1990 with the singular purpose of ending veteran homelessness.

Bohaty reached out to MACV’s chief operating officer, Jon Lovald, even before Hunters Harvest existed asking how to donate meat to soldiers returning from deployment.

“I was sitting on a lot of wild game last winter usually reserved for the dinner that we didn’t know what to do with,” Bohaty recalled. “Top (military) brass would attend my dinners, so I thought, ‘Let’s support deployed troops returning home.’” So he contacted Lovald, a retired lieutenant colonel who advocates for the state’s veterans.

“When Rich called, we wanted to figure out how to help him,” Lovald said.

“While we are not the National Guard or U.S. Army, our reach goes back far enough to facilitate that donation. We knew which units were returning and we were able to make contact. With the nonprofit set up, we were more prepared this year.”

Thanks to donors and volunteers, Hunters Harvest, with help from MACV, donated 175 boxes of assorted meats, plus 110 hams and 75 turkeys over the holidays to support military personnel and their families.

Packs of donated meat sticks, too, are used by MACV’s outreach team for homeless vets. “Prepackaged meats are perfect for that,” Lovald said. “People SEE HUNTER’S HARVEST, PAGE 11

Things you may not know about Martin Luther King Jr.

M

artin Luther King Jr. was one of the most influential figures of the 21st century. King's tireless activism during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s improved the lives of millions of people, and his tragic assassination on April 4, 1968, marked one of the darkest days in American history.

King's oratory prowess is well-documented. Individuals across the globe are familiar with his "I Have a Dream" speech, which King delivered during the March on Washington less than a year before his death. Less familiar are some other notable facts about the life of Martin Luther King Jr. • If he were alive today, Martin Luther King Jr. would still be years away from his 100th birthday.

King was assassinated in 1968, when he was not yet 40 years old. Born in Atlanta in 1929, King could very much still be alive today and would have celebrated his 93rd birthday on January 15, 2022.

• King was an extraordinarily gifted student. At an age when many students were preparing to enter their sophomore or junior year of high school, King began his freshman year of college at Morehouse College. King enrolled at Morehouse when he was 15 after the school opened enrollment to junior high students in an effort to overcome a dip in enrollment related to World War II. King passed the entrance exam and enrolled in the fall of 1944.

• King was ordained as a minister prior to graduating from Morehouse. The Baptist ministry was something of a family business for the Kings, as Martin Luther King Jr.’s father, grandfather and

great grandfather were all Baptist ministers. However, King did not initially intend to follow that path. He ultimately changed course and entered the ministry at age 18, graduating from Morehouse with a degree in sociology a year later.

• King survived a knife attack years before his assassination. King was stabbed in the chest with a letter opener during a book signing event in Harlem in 1958. His assailant, Izola Curry, was ultimately deemed mentally incompetent to stand trial. Though the attack did not kill him, King had to undergo intensive emergency surgery and was hospitalized for several weeks.

• Conspiracy theories surround King’s assassination. King’s assassin, James Earl Ray, was found guilty and sentenced to 99 years in prison. Authorities, including the United States Department of Justice, concluded Ray, a career criminal, acted alone. However, some, including surviving members of King’s family, believed his assassination

was part of a conspiracy.

• Despite his tragic assassination in 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. left his mark on the world. That legacy is even more remarkable when considering the unique twists and turns King’s life took prior to his death.

COVID-19 BRIEF UPDATE State announces largescale vaccination site Gov. Tim Walz announced a new community vaccination site launched Jan. 9 in Oakdale, which offers first and second doses to Minnesotans 5 and older, and booster doses to Minnesotans 12 and older. The Inwood Oaks site is located at 484 Inwood Ave. N. Appointments can be made online at my.primary.health/r/ inwood-oaks; walk-ins are also welcome.

The Inwood Oaks site will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays and from 1-8 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays. The location will administer the Pfizer vaccine for ages 5 and up, including boosters for ages 12 and up. It can administer up to 1,000 doses per day.

The Oakdale site will increase the state’s vaccination capacity and expand access to boosters to everyone who is due, including newly eligible teenagers 12 years of age and older.

The Oakdale site joins Mall of America and MSP Airport in the state’s large-scale vaccine site operations.

anuary and February are among the greatest times to get outdoors in Minnesota. With the winter solstice behind us there are plenty of things to do with a little extra daylight. Now is the time to try a walk on a snow-covered trail, or break out the crosscountry skis or snow shoes.

An opportunity to try ice fishing is at the 39th annual Centerville Lions Club Ice Fishing contest on Centerville Lake Feb. 19. Sign up for the BEAR’ly Open golf outing Feb. 5, which supports the White Bear Area Food Shelf. Foursomes take to the course on frozen White Bear Lake and play 18 holes with a golf club, baseball or whiffle ball bat, hockey tennis racket, or any other tool Publisher’s stick, that can propel a tennis ball into the hole; and sponsors host fun games and View activities along the way.

Carter One winter event I will always remember was when I was photographing Johnson the candlelight ski/hike at William O’Brien State Park when I worked at the Country Messenger newspaper, which served Scandia, Marine on St. Croix and May Township. The park staff lined a trail with luminaries, there were nature demonstrations and kick sleds, and they served hot cocoa with whipped cream. Family events such as this at local parks and nature preserves, along with opportunities for beginners to try snow shoeing, cross country skiing, or kick sledding are plentiful this time of year. Registration fees and equipment rentals are reasonable or sometimes free. At Ramsey County Park’s Tamarack Nature Center ski passes with rental are $10 per person, go to ramseycounty.us/residents/parks-recreation/tamarack-nature-center/skiing-snowshoeing. Anoka County Park’s Wargo Nature Center has snow shoe rentals for $5 a pair and cross country skis for $6. Think about heading to one of the Loppet events coming up, such as the Loppet Winter Festival Feb. 6, the City of Lakes Loppet Ski Festival, or the Minnesota Nordic Ski League State meet Feb. 16 and 17 in Biwabik or Wisconsin Nordic Ski League State Meet in Cable, Wisconsin Feb. 12 and 13. The volunteer board with the Mora Vasaloppet will celebrate the 50th year Vasaloppet USA Feb. 12 and 13. Even if you’re not a participant, volunteering or being part of the energy and cheering on the racers as an observer can be a great experience.

If it’s your first time back on a snowy trail in a while, take it easy and think of it as a warm up. While you’re out, consider supporting local businesses with a beverage or lunch at one of our local establishments following your winter outing.

Good people Help wanted signs are hard to miss throughout our community. Here at Press Publications we’re thankful for the staff who produce and package the content for our readers. Our team members are dedicated to the community and see the importance on reporting local news you can’t get anywhere else. We filled an open position during the pandemic and have recently filled a part-time position. We have a couple more to go — a multi-media representative and an entry-level graphic designer. Like many businesses in the community, finding candidates has been a challenge. We have posted our positions on sites like Indeed, Facebook, LinkedIn and the print and digital pages of this paper. We were excited to have so many applicants-more than six solid respondents, half of whom learned about the job from this newspaper’s help wanted section. After initially reaching out to each candidate we were able to set up three interviews, one in person and two by Zoom. It has been a while since I have done the initial calls and found the candidates qualifications are amazing. If your business is in search for good people, remember to keep your job postings in front of the local community in the pages of the Press. ‘Beauty is a fragile gift’

B

eauty means many different things to people. A hike on a favorite trail in Superior National Forest, holding a baby, time spent in a deer stand, good architecture, good art, or time spent with loved ones and friends.

Modern life is a constant assault on our senses and filled with distractions, but these things and activities connect us with something bigger.

Beauty has an important, necessary, and Legislator foundational role in our lives that we Lingo rarely acSen. Roger knowledge.

The Roman Chamberlain poet Ovid said that “beauty is a fragile gift.” The poet Keats famously wrote, “a thing of beauty is a joy forever.” The transformational nature of beauty necessarily leads to the contemplation of the Divine, the eternal. Emerson wrote, “never lose an opportunity of seeing anything beautiful, for beauty is God’s handwriting.”

He went on to note, that “love of beauty is taste. The creation of beauty is art.”

Modern life has, in a way, led us to negate beauty, to deny ourselves the right to it. Look

at “modern” architecture.

Classical buildings have been ignored in favor of extremely utilitarian and tremendously unappealing structures in our major cities. We even have a local television program called “Lost Twin Cities” that documents the lost chapters of our past.

What was lost, exactly?

Specific buildings? Yes of course. But what did they have in common? Transformational beauty. A consequence of modernity is the loss of beauty.

The late English philosopher and writer, Sir Roger Scruton, maintained that beauty is not subjective but objective. He saw it as a universal need.

I agree. Scruton noted that beauty is a remedy for chaos and sorrow; it makes human life worthwhile. Beauty plays an essential role in our mind, body, and soul.

When it comes to design, Scruton suggests that if beauty is considered first, it becomes useful forever. The beautiful is its own endorsement.

A personal matter for people in the White Bear Lake area is the Metropolitan Council’s plan to run 90 busses every day through the heart of the city. While there are many reasons to oppose the bus plan, I believe the primary one is the destruction of beauty. Downtown White Bear is unique, it is personal, it is home. It is designed for people. It is

beautiful. “Change” for its own sake is change that is suspect, if not damaging and deserving of opposition.

Our high-tech, high-speed, instantaneous, commercial, material culture creates massive distractions and noise. It is difficult to extract ourselves from this environment and notice beauty. Indeed, it is often destroyed in the name of “progress.”

Beauty allows us an opportunity to temporarily shut out the noise and connect at a different level with ourselves, each other, and our surroundings.

Reading a good book (on actual paper), holding a baby, gazing at the stars, contemplating art, enjoying a peaceful garden, or sitting at the end of a dock on a secluded lake listening to the wind through the pines: all of these are an encounter with beauty.

Beauty is an essential part of our lives. Beauty is objective.

Beauty is good, it is humanity, it is truth. Roger Scruton suggests perhaps we have lost belief in beauty because we have lost faith in ideas. He believes if we lose beauty, we lose our humanity.

Maybe we simply need to stop and smell the proverbial roses. To allow ourselves to be happy. To be grateful for the beauty around us, seek it and hold on to it.

Thankful for police

The White Bear Lake police reports help me appreciate the relative safety of our community. Most are minor incidents except for the DWIs and domestic assaults, which endanger lives.

I particularly chuckled over the rabbit and donut incidents in the following selections from the Jan. 5 White Bear Press Police reports: • Officers responded to report of an injured rabbit • A complaint of fireworks • A man stole a box of donuts • Office responded to a dog versus dog bite • A small metal cross went missing I doubt any of the above would have been newsworthy in Minneapolis.

Despite my chuckling over the above more minor incidents, I know and appreciate that our White Bear police often face danger and difficulty as the “thin blue line” protecting us.

Many thanks also to our police department for their good community relations. I have enjoyed visiting with police officers at our summer neighborhood night out events.

Neurodiversity observations

I was pleased to see your article “Theater Is a Haven for Neurodiversity.” Unfortunately, it does a bit of a disservice by including bipolar disorder and depression in the list of processing and learning differences.

They are potentially debilitating illnesses that can

and should be treated. Everyone deserves to be free of them.

The point of neurodiversity, on the other hand, is that conditions like autism don’t need to be fixed, or removed, or treated as deficits or disorders. Neurodiverse people can live meaningful and successful lives just as we are. Our processing styles give us strengths as well as challenges. As your article rightly points out, people with autism or ADHD are often highly creative because we make connections others miss.

Neurodiversity doesn’t mean we can’t benefit from accommodations that help us navigate the world. Often, though, those accommodations make things better for everyone. As an autistic person, I find blaring TV sets in public places overwhelming. I’m willing to bet that removing them would make all of us less tense and distracted in the airport or the doctor’s office.

If we understand it properly, we can respect, include, accommodate and benefit from people who historically struggle to participate in society. Neurodiverse people have to work a lot harder to manage daily life.

Recording blunder response

A half-page article was recently published about the Ramaley Park neighborhood that appeared to leave out many facts. The issue at hand dates back 40-plus years ago. The question is who owns the access point to the Tice Parcel of land and what sort of development would be reasonable in that space.

- My property was purchased in 2018 with the knowledge of the lot lines given to me, which included the end of the street, which was verified by city staff when I obtained a permit for the shed I put on my property.

My family lives on Clarence Street in White Bear Lake. I read your article, “Recording blunder set straight for Ramaley Park neighbors” and I would like to point out an inaccuracy.

The photo caption, “This city graphic shows northern and southern portions of Fifth Avenue and properties claiming ownership. Addresses noted as 0 are city-owned” is incorrect. Lot 5, Block 25, which lies at the south end of Clarence Street, also happens to align with the proposed building parcel that is my aunt Judy Murray‘s land and has been since May 18, 1963. This false information gives your readers the impression that the city owns more land than they actually do, and that there would be a larger buffer zone between the existing residents and the proposed duplex buildings.

Helpful information for your readers would have been if it had been reported that the five members of the Planning Commission all stated they felt this development wouldn’t be a good fit. Traffic and parking concerns are relevant, as the proposed units would only have one-car garages and the potential of two or more vehicles. Clarence Street is old and narrow, without gutters or sidewalks, and has very little room for on-street parking. This was not shared in the article.

Our neighborhood has had a long struggle with the city. This article paints the picture that we are against development. Our neighborhood isn’t against development. We would, however, like to have development that fits the community, not development that only benefits the builders.

I can’t help but believe that people who question vaccinations and mask requirements to protect our children from the spread of COVID, especially in our schools, are the same people who believe the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection at our nation’s Capitol was really a zealous crowd of patriots voicing their right of freedom of expression. • A Minneapolis woman reported the bed cover of her pickup truck cut overnight Dec. 25-26 while it was parked in a lot in the 600 block of County Road D. The damage to the cover is estimated at $1,000, and $150 in new clothing and bedding was stolen.

• A West St. Paul man reported his 1992 Toyota Camry stolen from a visitor parking space in the 1100 block of County Road D Dec. 26, after it was parked there for only one hour. The vehicle has been entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database as stolen.

• A Vadnais Heights man, 53, was cited Dec. 26 in a parking lot in the 800 block of County Road E for driving after revocation and failure to provide proof of insurance.

• A Minneapolis man, 62, was arrested on an active Ramsey County warrant Dec. 26 in a parking lot at Vadnais Blvd. and Edgerton Street after Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies conducted a random license plate check.

• A paddleboard and its accessories bag were reported stolen Dec. 26 from a secured access garage in the 4100 block of Centerville Road. The items were not secured, as the complainant thought they should have been already secure in the secure access garage.

• The Walmart shoplifting chronicles identified four offenders in one day. A Maplewood man, 27, was

cited Dec. 26 in the 800 block of County Road E for shoplifting after deputies stopped his vehicle as it was about to enter southbound I-35E from County Road E. Deputies also banned him from the store before releasing him. A St. Paul woman, 27, was also cited for shoplifting after loss prevention personnel observed her concealing items and leaving the store without paying for them. A Wyoming man, 36, was cited for shoplifting after the loss prevention crew saw him taking an item off a shelf and trying to leave the store without paying. He was also banned from the store before being released. A St. Paul woman, 21, was cited and banned for shoplifting after she was seen concealing items and underpaying at the self-checkout.

• A Brooklyn Park woman, 32, was arrested on active warrants from Wright and Benton counties at 8:13 a.m. Dec. 27 at the Walmart in the 800 block of County Road E following a disorderly conduct complaint. The subject was in the business after hours, walking through the store claiming to be a vendor and cursing at employees. When deputies arrived, the suspect fled on foot. However, deputies caught up to her and arrested her for the warrants, disorderly conduct and fleeing police.

• A bag of miscellaneous items was reported stolen Dec. 27 from a car parked at the Speedway station in the 1000 block of County Road E. • A license plate was reported stolen Dec. 28 from a vehicle parked in the Target lot in the 900 block of County Road E. The plate number has been entered into the NCIC. • A St. Paul man, 22, was arrested on a Ramsey

County domestic assault warrant Dec. 29 at the intersection of Willow Lake Blvd. and English Street after deputies pulled the subject over for tabs that expired in 2020.

• A Minneapolis man, 31, was cited Dec. 29 for causing a hit-and-run accident in a parking lot in the 3400 block of Highway 61 and for driving dangerously while fleeing. After he backed his vehicle into a parked vehicle and caused minor damage, he stopped briefly, as if to exchange information, before fleeing at a high rate of speed. He nearly hit pedestrians and other vehicles during his rapid exit.

• A resident in the 600 block of South Oak Drive on Dec. 29 reported an unauthorized account opened using his financial and personal information. Deputies advised him on steps to report to the credit bureau and other vendors.

• A resident in the 1600 block of Pioneer Lane reported the catalytic converter stolen from his Toyota Prius at 3:30 a.m. Dec. 29 while it was parked in the driveway. The complainant observed two suspects driving away in a dark-colored Toyota Camry with no front license plate.

• A Stacy woman reported the catalytic converter stolen from her Mitsubishi Outlander Sport during the afternoon of Dec. 31 while it was parked for less than two hours in the theater lot in the 1100 block of County Road J.

PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEF White Bear Lake man convicted of vehicle theft Howard William Dunleap, 20, of White Bear Lake has been convicted of theft of a motor vehicle. According to the criminal complaint, Oakdale police officers were dispatched just before 9 a.m. on Oct. 4, 2020, to a suspicious vehicle call in the area of Hillvale Court North and Hillvale Trail North. The reporting party stated the vehicle was honking its horn, and they described the vehicle and its license plate number.

The officers determined the suspect vehicle had been reported stolen in Ramsey County.

Upon arrival, the officers saw the suspect vehicle, a black Ford Explorer, leaving the area. The officers followed the vehicle, but instead of stopping, the suspect vehicle accelerated to a speed of 89 miles per hour with the officers in pursuit. The vehicle went over a curb before continuing into a dead-end area and through a business parking lot, where it struck a concrete ramp,

After the suspect was taken into custody, he refused to identify himself. A Cottage Grove police officer took the suspect’s fingerprints and was able to identify him as Howard William Dunleap. Dunleap is currently in custody and has been sentenced to a stay of imposition, 280 days in jail with 280 credited. He has been discharged from probation.

Maureen Joan Kimball Fitzpatrick

Born on the last day of 1932, Rena died four days before her 89 birthday. A child of the depression, her psyche was shaped by financial insecurity. She scoured the “Thrifties” ads and cut coupons.

The shopping lists she created for the kids’ bicycle grocery runs were legendary.

She married her true love Tom Fitzpatrick at 18. They had six children in 11.5 years. Rena was a faithful ally in Tom’s schemes. The wildest was taking the family of 8 in a van to Mexico for 10 months. Her dream of becoming a nurse was realized when she became an RN at 41. She traveled the world, but loved home the best. A poor swimmer, she made sure her kids learned to swim. She loved to dance. Rena enjoyed chow mein, but disliked mashed potatoes. The unique gifts she gave were famous for generating laughter and memorable stories.

Predeceased by her husband Tom, her parents Lucille and Maurice Kimball and her sister Beverly. Left to celebrate her life are her children: Peggy (Steve Bauman), Mark (Kyoko Okuda), Colleen (Rick Lillien), Shannon (Bernie Harlow), Kevin (Pamela) and Tricia (Doug McKinnon), 17 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, brothers George (Shirley) and Jerry (June) Kimball and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial will be held when Minnesota thaws out and Covid settles down.

Bohaty’s legendary game dinners at the Prom Center served a dual purpose during its long life span. Not only did the event serve as a major fundraiser for Pheasants Forever, an organization close to Bohaty’s heart, but his hunting buddies had a worthwhile outlet for their meat, which included venison, bear, elk, wild boar, pheasant, gator — even snake.

The longtime White Bear resident developed an interest in upland conservancy as a youngster pheasant

hunting in southern Minnesota with his dad and uncles. As the years went by, his passion lead to an interest in conservation, where he focused his energy on preserving pheasant habitat. Since 1982, Bohaty has been a volunteer and major donor to Pheasants Forever’s Build a Wildlife Area land acquisition project. His dinners evolved to be one of the largest giving campaigns for the organization, which honored Bohaty with a Lifetime Achievement award.

Affectionately called “boss” by his many friends, the 79-year-old says he’s up before dawn to “hit the gym,” but Bohaty isn’t out beating the bushes hunting game like he used to. His role these days could probably be best

described as tour guide.

A snowbird who winters in Florida with wife Anna, Bohaty enjoys hosting friends who like to boar hunt in the Sunshine State or track pythons in the Everglades. “I have hunting blood in me and can never give it up,” he said.

Bohaty gets help for his nonprofit from son Brian, who serves as chair, and daughter Amy, who serves as treasurer.

Calling her dad “a special person,” Amy Bohaty said her family is proud of him. “My dad has a long history of conservancy and philanthropy,” she noted. “Both he and my mom have given a lot to their community.”

For those who may not know, the Bohatys owned Ciresi’s Liquor on Third

Street in downtown White Bear Lake for about 40 years. They bought the business from Anna’s father, Samuel Ciresi, who opened the store in 1952.

The Bohatys also owned the Piccadilly restaurant in Mahtomedi for about a decade, Amy said, selling it in the late ’80s. In fact, that’s where the game dinners started.

MACV’s Lovald calls Bohaty a “very giving person.”

He recalled a conversation from the Hunters Harvest founder that went like this: “Rich calls from Florida and says, ‘Jonny (he calls me that), have you ever had gator? I’m sending some home for you.’ My wife asked, ‘who are you talking to?’ I said, ‘I’m talking to the meat guy.’”

“It’s really special to get named to my second Olympic team,” said Brandt, “and I couldn’t be more excited to get to work with the goal of another gold medal to bring

back to the U.S.” The 28-year-old forward is one of 15 returning players from the 2018 team along with eight new members. She is among eight Minnesotans on the roster.

This area is doubly represented on Team USA. The national team coach Joel

Johnson, a Woodbury native who’s lived in White Bear Lake for 18 years.

USA won its second gold medal in 2018 (and first since 1998), ending a dynasty by Canada.

Asked about her role on that team, Brandt recounted, “I mostly played

on a line with (former Gopher teammates) Dani Cameranesi and Amanda Kessel. That was a fun line to be a part of, as we brought speed and creativity to the game.”

Brandt, who lives in St. Paul, has collected three world championship gold

medals, plus the Olympic gold. This will be the 13th time she has skated for a Team USA, including juniors teams.

The squad, headquartered in Blaine at National Sports Center, will depart for China on Jan. 27 from Los Angeles.

Janicki joins 1,000 points club with 39-point game

Jack Janicki joined White Bear Lake’s 1,000-point club while scoring 39 points to lead a 59-54 win over Andover on Dec. 30.

The 6-foot-4 junior guard shot 7-for-12 on three-pointers and 15-for-27 overall, plus 2-for-2 on free shots, in probably the best game of his stellar career.

“It was especially rewarding to do it in a Bears jersey playing alongside the guys I’ve grown up playing with,” said Janicki. “While reaching the milestone was nice, it was even better to get a close win against a pretty good team in Andover.”

The Bears trailed by as much as 18 points in the first half but overtook the Huskies in the second half when Janicki did the bulk of his scoring.

“Jack can put his team on his back,” said coach Greg Burke. “We’ve been playing him at point guard, but we are also posting him up for a change of pace.”

A starter since ninth grade, Janicki is the eighth White Bear Lake boy to surpass 1,000 points. The record-holder is Jeff Halbert with 1,916 points in a career ending in 2002.

Janicki joins his mother as a four-digit scorer. Sta-

cy (Fields) tallied 1,513 points for Mounds View and was named Miss Basketball.

Asked if he might break the family record, Janicki was diplomatic: “I don’t want to disrespect my mom, but I think it’s in reach! She scored over 1,500 career points, so I’d be in pretty good company.”

The Zephyrs coasted 81-37 at Two Rivers (29) there Friday with 10 players scoring, led by Wilson with 13 points, Potthoff 12, and Kletti and Anna Greene 11 each.

Mahtomedi finished 0-3 at the Hill-Murray tournament with

a 65-56 loss to Fridley Dec. 30. Savanna Stockness scored 12, Potthoff 10 and Zoie Centers nine.

Gymnastics: Zephyrs win at North Mahtomedi (4-0) tallied 134.775 points to win against an incomplete North St. Paul lineup there Thursday. Tess Mathson led with 35.525 and Abbey Bush had 35.475. Johnson (15-1) was 220-pound champ with a bye and two pins.

Emmett Poppelman (10-6) was second at 195 with a 3-1 record and two pins, getting pinned in the finals. Max Rice (12-8) was second at 285 as he pinned two opponents, then got pinned in the finals. Hayden Schaefer (12-9) placed third at 152 with a 3-1 record and two pins. Billy Arlandson (11-7) took fourth at 182. Coach Matt Oswald noted that 11 of 13 place winners in varsity and JV were football players: “It’s good to see multi-sports athletes become better athletes and competitors through wrestling.”

BEARS SPORTS BRIEFS Another title for Sloan Matt Sloan of White Bear Lake was seconds away from a pin of Minneota’s Connor Sik in the semifinals at the Rogers tournament Dec. 30. Sloan, ranked No. 4 in Class 3A, went on to beat No. 5 Aiden Wayne of Osseo 6-4 in the finals for the 195-pound championship in the 30team event. Sloan is 20-0 and also won a Brainerd tournament in December.

Boys basketball: Bears lose to No. 6 Raptors, rout Roseville White Bear Lake, back at full strength last week, gave No. 6 ranked East Ridge a battle, falling short 56-46, on Tuesday, Jan. 4, then defeated Roseville Area 91-64 on Friday, both on the road.

The Bears are 6-5 overall, 2-2 in the Suburban East.

East Ridge (7-2) held Bear star Jack Janicki to six points. Wyatt Hawks tallied 19 points and Jack Misgen 10 as the Bears, down 31-21 at the half, played the Raptors even in the second half. Alex Mattes netted 23 points and Kendall Blue 13 for the Raptors. The Bears

thumped Roseville (2-9) with Janicki hitting 31 points (29 in the first half), Hawks 16 and Misgen 14.

During that time, the Bears had close losses to Anoka 61-59 Dec. 23 and unbeaten Mankato West 48-44 on Dec. 29, before beating Andover 59-54 on Dec. 30, rallying from an 18-point deficit. Janicki sank 39 points, including his 1,000th. Zach Nelson was next with eight points.

Gymnastics: Squires, Gunderson place 1st & 3rd at officials’ meet White Bear Lake’s Grace Squires was allaround champion with 36.85 points and Laney Gunderson placed third with 36.175 Saturday at the Minnesota Girls Gymnastics Officials Association annual meet at Park Center. by East Ridge 138.65 to 130.85. Squires won all around (37.175), bars (9.6), beam (9.375) and floor (9.4). Gunderson was fourth all-around (35.325).

Nordic: Bear boys 4th, girls 6th in SEC meet at Bolstad The White Bear Lake boys placed fourth and the girls sixth in a seventeam Suburban East Conference meet, classic style, Wednesday, Jan. 5, at Les Bolstad Golf Course. Forest Lake won both meets. Leading the Bear boys was freshman Andrew Klier in 16th place among 111 skiers in 19:55. Boys hockey: Bears top Rangers 6-1 White Bear Lake, after not playing since Dec. 23, got back on the ice with a 6-1 win at Forest Lake last Wednesday. Scoring for the Bears (5-4) were Brady Borgestad (two), Josh Hoover, Tyler Bishop, Aiden Welch (shorthanded) and Joe Belisle.

Welch, Belisle and Aiden Atkins each assisted on two goals. Nicholas Peterman in goal stopped 27 of 28 shots by the Rangers (4-6-1).

The 7,100-square-foot location will serve as Minnesota’s very first Mead Hall. The Meadery has been hoping to expand in order to have an adequate seating area for its customers. The new space will also include two private party rooms, one accommodating 20 people and the other accommodating 45. The grand opening will be held in February at the Maplewood location, 1320 County D Road Circle, just south of I-694 and west of Hwy. 61.

Ice cream shop coming to South White Bear Lake South White Bear Lake residents may have noticed activity taking place at the long-vacant retail location at County Road E and Bellaire Avenue. The property has been purchased by Zafar Khamdamov, who will open Bean.Co in March if renovations are completed according to schedule.

Bean.Co, an ice cream shop, will also offer a variety of coffees, teas, smoothies and fresh-squeezed juices. To further “satisfy the craving of something delicious,” Khamdamov also plans to offer authentic French crepes.

“I have traveled through many countries, and French crepes are a highly desirable dessert that is not available around here,” said Khamdamov, a Twin Cities-based real estate investor. “I make crepes for my kids and their friends at sleepovers, and I wanted to bring it as a concept to customers.

It’s been on my mind for many years.”

An event space for gatherings such as birthday parties is also planned at the shop.

Khamdamov is no stranger to this type of business, as he has previously owned Mr. Smoothie and Nestle Toll House franchises.

“I wanted to start something of my own,” he said, “something unique that no one else does. White Bear Lake is the first location, and my plan is to open additional stores.”

Khamdamov says he looks forward to serving the neighboring residential area and “bringing fun, entertainment and gatherings to the community.”

Enchanted Boutique moves to Maplewood Enchanted Boutique is moving to Maplewood in early February. Patrons won’t have to travel far from the store’s original location on White Bear Avenue and County Road F in White Bear Lake, as the new boutique is located just 2.5 miles to the south at 1860 Beam Avenue.

Owner Bonnie Gurney said the store outgrew its White Bear Lake space, and will reopen in its new 8500-square-foot location right across from Maplewood Mall.

The new location will have four provider rooms for tarot readings, palmistry, photography and reiki sessions along with two classrooms, which used for classes as soon as early February.

SCHOOL BRIEF Districts offer COVID-19 testing for students, staff White Bear Area Schools and Mahtomedi Public Schools are offering a COVID-19 testing site for students and staff in a rented space near the Normandy Park Education Center, located at 2482 County Road F East in White Bear Lake.

MAHTOMEDI CITY COUNCIL NOTES At the Jan. 4 Mahtomedi City Council meeting, City Attorney Bridget Nason administered the oath of office to Lilly Melander and Luke Schlegel, two new council members elected last November.

Rookie and veteran council members chose their committees for the upcoming year. Mayor Judson Marshall will serve as liaison to the Planning Commission, the city of White Bear Lake (with City Administrator Scott Neilson), the city of Grant and Mahtomedi Schools.

Council Member Richard Brainerd will serve as council president and be liaison to law enforcement services, Planning Commission, Personnel Committee, the city of Willernie and Century College.

Council Member Jane Schneeweis will serve as liaison to the Personnel Committee, Environment Commission and the city of Dellwood.

Council Member Luke Schlegel will serve as liaison to the city of Pine Springs and the Ramsey and Washington County cable commissions.

Council Member Lilly Melander will serve as liaison to the city of Birchwood Village.

Council directed city staff to advertise for talented citizens to fill openings on Mahtomedi's advisory committees. The Parks, Environmental and Finance commissions all have three openings each, and the Planning Commission has two openings.

Council also designated its consultants for 2022. The city's accounting firm is CliftonLarsenAllen; legal council will be provided by LeVander, Gillen & Miller P.A.; the city engineer will be John Sachi; fiscal consultants will be Ehlers and Associates and the city planner will be Hannah Rybak.

Council will continue to meet on the first and third Tuesday of every month with two exceptions in 2022. Instead of meeting on Feb. 1, which is caucus night, council will meet on Wednesday, Feb. 2.

Instead of meeting on Aug. 2, which is

National Night Out, council will meet on Monday, Aug. 1. All meetings are scheduled for 7 p.m. at City Hall.

The official newspaper for Mahtomedi is the White Bear Press. The designated newspaper must be one of general circulation and availability within the city.

Another open house opportunity is available to the public, after Neilson updated council that a virtual public open house is scheduled for Jan 19 to review MnDOT's upcoming turnback of Century Avenue to the counties. Work on Mahtomedi's portion of the project is scheduled for 2026.

After the city received a grant from Washington County, 151 households in Pine Springs, Grant, Willernie and Mahtomedi have signed up to use the food scrap drop-off site behind the fire station on Hallam Avenue. Plans are afoot for a curbside food scrap pickup side by side with garbage and recycling in the future.

The December deer hunt was canceled, Public Works Director Bob Goebel said in his report. Bowhunters harvested 27 deer out of the herd of 99 during the October and November hunts on city-owned property in Birchwood and Mahtomedi. Some concerns came up that the city had made the herd too small, Brainerd said. “There are still plenty of deer out there,” Goebel quickly reassured the public. A February survey of the deer population is planned.

The Mahtomedi Fire Department received a record-breaking 1,049 calls for service in 2021, according to Chief Terry Fischer. “The last time the city answered more than 1,000 calls was in 2017,” he said. Fischer noted that the busy December pushed the department over the edge. The department continues to increase staffing: two more candidates have applied for an open full-time position. Fischer also alerted council that 2022 would be his final year as chief, as he starts his 29th year with the

department.

The Mahtomedi Fire Department plans to add a new truck to its fleet this year, and donations from the community will help.

After property tax statements come out this spring, property owners within the city who have questions and challenges about their valuation can attend the Local Board of Appeal and Equalization meeting, which council scheduled for 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, at City Hall.

The city continues to pay its bills, after council approved construction pay voucher No. 7 for $23,544.13 to T. A. Schifsky and Sons Inc. for the Phase 4 East Historic District Improvements.

Pervious pavers are not dead yet, even though council passed a resolution memorializing some findings of fact and reasons for denial relating to the application for a zoning ordinance amendment from Pat McGrath/DeWitt Homes. After the action, Council Member Richard Brainerd noted that the denial of the zoning ordinance amendment regarding pervious pavers may have been done in haste at the last meeting of the year on Dec. 7. With two new council members given an opportunity to become involved in decision-making, the city also has a better chance for deliberation toward a more comprehensive decision, he said. Council unanimously (4-0, with Schneeweis absent) directed city staff to rework the issue and bring the revised amendment request back to council.

The item will go back to square one with Planning Commission review and public hearings, before returning to council for action in approximately 60 days.

The council next meets at 7 p.m.
