Community invited to honor the fallen at Vietnam remembrance event center to cities throughout the nation. White Bear Township was one of only 31 communities chosen to host The Wall That Heals in 2026, said White Bear Lake Historical Society Executive Director Sara Markoe Hanson. It is also the only Minnesota city on the tour. Community members still have a chance – until July 7 – to submit a loved one for inclusion in the traveling display. Of the more than 68,000 Minnesotans who served in the Vietnam War, 1,077 never came home. These individuals – those lost and those who currently live in the community – will be honored at The Wall That Heals, a four-day memorial event and educational display hosted at Polar Lakes Park in White Bear Township, Aug. 6-9. Structural Wood Corporation closes its doors after 61 years BY GRAHAM JOHNSON CONTRIBUTING WRITER

After more than six decades, Structural Wood Corporation (SWC) will close its doors at the end of this year. The long-time wholesale distributor of engineered wood products has faced challenges in the changing construction industry including difficulties hiring, a move away from wood as a construction material as well as supply chain issues following the pandemic, which led to the business closing. “None of those things are the reason. It’s death by 1,000 cuts,” said Jim Schumacher, President of SWC.

Decades of business in a changing industry

SWC’s origins stem from Weyerhaeuser, an American timber company pivoting to focus on manufacturing rather than design or fabrication. The design and fabrication jobs previously done by Weyerhaeuser were open to new companies, creating a new market. “About 20 corporations came out of that decision,” Schumacher said. “We did the stuff they didn’t want to do.” SWC quickly became a one-stop shop for all manner of commercial construction needs. “We have customers across dozens of supply sectors,” Schumacher said. Over time, many of SWC’s common construction projects shifted away from wood within new construction, instead relying on concrete and steel. Schumacher referenced a shift in culture for chains like Arby’s and REI, which previously

America: A rotating cast of characters

T

his Fourth of July weekend, I’m headed to a reunion at my family’s homestead in rural North Dakota. My extended family has farmed that land since the late 1800s, and I have cherished memories in that house: • Eating my grandmother’s kifle, a German-Hungarian croissant • Playing “Sonic Adventure” with my cousin on his Dreamcast and finding the secret blue-screen level • Shooting rusted-out milk pails with my grandpa and his 12-gauge shotgun that nearly dislocated my, at the time, 10-year-old shoulder • Sliding mattresses down the crazy-steep, vertigo-inducing farmhouse stairs • Beating my aunt at Rummikub after only 14 tries • Getting peppered with ash from fireworks that my uncle swore he set up the right distance away

This time, though, I’ve been nervous to go back. Both of my grandparents have passed away, all of my cousins have expanding family trees I need to memorize and many of my aunts and uncles have been through life-changing health ordeals. Conversely, recent life and health events have changed me too. Going back, I can’t help but wonder, “Is this the same family I had those memories with? Will I still recognize them? Will they recognize me?” Whenever I want to avoid pondering Looking big questions, I watch TV. This time, I Out with watched the series finale of “Hacks.” My favorite character on that show is Logan Randi, the sheltered assistant, played by Robby Hoffman, who uses common Logan Gion sense and a sturdy work ethic to get ahead in a loopy industry. Hoffman joined the cast in season four, quickly stealing every scene she was in. Watching the finale, I was struck by how essential to the show Randi had become in such a short time—much like Kirstie Alley did in season six of “Cheers” or Rob Lowe in season three of “Parks and Recreation.” My media-addled brain extrapolated that thought to my family reunion. This year, I might make a new favorite memory with a new favorite family member. Maybe an in-law and I will get first place in the scavenger hunt. Maybe a younger cousin has matured into a great conversationalist. Maybe my uncle will actually set the fireworks back far enough for once. While that last one is doubtful, time and new blood have not made this family reunion something alien, but instead, something original and exciting, something worth anticipating. This Fourth of July, our country turns 250 years old. The Gion clan missed the first 110 years of that history. Still, my grandfather was a WWII vet, many of my cousins have served in our military and my uncle holds an elected office. My family is deeply, proudly American. The same goes for Minnesota. As a state, we missed the Revolutionary War, but we have deep Union ties to the Civil War and continue to play a role in our country’s history today. If the US was a TV show, Minnesota wouldn’t be an episode-one regular cast member. Regardless, I feel like we’ve become a fan-favorite addition. This Fourth of July, while revisiting the cherished memories we have of our great nation, I hope we also make room for new ones. America looks different today than it did in 1776, but instead of asking questions like “Is this the same country I had those memories with? Do I still recognize it? Does it recognize me?” I encourage you to ask, “How will I help create something original and exciting in my community, state, nation?” “How will I create an America worth anticipating?” Logan Gion is a staff writer at Press Publications. Distributed weekly in: White Bear Lake • White Bear Township • Mahtomedi Birchwood • Dellwood • Willernie • Gem Lake Pine Springs • Portions of Grant • Vadnais Heights

‘It’s only a matter of time,’ a request for help

A

s the weather warms and we begin to enjoy our short Minnesota summer, the White Bear Lake Police Department is once again receiving complaints and concerns about e-motos and foot scooters. What were once novelty items have become affordable, everyday technology. As their popularity increases, our officers and Cops community members see Corner these devices Erik Johnston used more often, and too frequently in unsafe or dangerous ways. During roll call briefings, one phrase keeps coming up is, “It’s only a matter of time.” Officers are worried about the inevitable crashes that result when speed, inexperience, and busy roadways intersect. Unfortunately, that prediction came true on Thursday, June 18, just before our first Marketfest event of the year. A young rider and a vehicle collided at White Bear Avenue and Lakeaires Boulevard. The rider, just one day shy of their 10th birthday, suffered significant injuries that will take more than the summer to heal.

Thankfully they were wearing a helmet; which likely prevented a much worse outcome. A major challenge we face is the lack of public awareness about the rules that apply to these devices. Our department is committed to educating parents, youth and the wider community about what is and is not allowed under Minnesota law. ElectricAssisted Bicycles (e-bikes) must meet all the following criteria: • A motor with 750 watts of power or less • A maximum assisted speed of 28 miles per hour • Fully functional pedals • No motorcyclestyle throttle • Additionally, operators must be 15 years or older Any device that does not meet all these requirements is classified as an e-moto, which has additional obligations. An e-moto must be: • Registered as a vehicle (many models sold cannot legally be registered) • Insured • Operated by a licensed driver age 16 or older with a motorcycle endorsement In general, these devices are not legal for use on roads, trails or sidewalks and are best limited to private property, such as at a cabin or other controlled areas. Small foot scooters that travel under 15 mph may be operated

by youth beginning at age 12, provided they wear a helmet and follow applicable traffic regulations. Please note, riders under 18 are required to wear a helmet when operating any electricassisted vehicle of these types. As we continue our efforts to promote safety and reduce risky behavior, we are asking for the community’s help. If you have these devices in your household, please: • Check whether your equipment meets the correct legal classification • Ensure riders are of the appropriate age • Talk with young riders about safe operation and their own limitations • Set boundaries and prohibit use of devices that travel at high speeds or for which riders do not meet age requirements Our goal is simple: to keep our young people safe. With your help, we can change the prediction from “it’s only a matter of time” to “not in White Bear Lake.” If you have any questions, please reach out to any of our officers or call the police department; we’re here to help. Erik Johnston is the chief of police for the White Bear Lake Police Department.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR taste and out of line. I won’t stoop to naming him or her in return. But since I was directly addressed, I feel compelled to respond. Yes, the current city council was not involved in the bond default for the Vadnais Heights Sports Center. However, what was conveniently left out is that the current city administrator and city attorney were both involved. Following an audit, those same officials recommended to a past council that the findings be sealed and withheld from residents. That bond default nearly bankrupted the city, and residents are still paying for it today. We cannot afford to repeat that mistake. I understand this resident may be comfortable absorbing the tax increases a new fire station would require. But not every resident shares that financial position — especially those who are retired and living on fixed incomes. That reality deserves acknowledgment, not dismissal. As for the suggestion that residents who missed a particular meeting are somehow uninformed, I offer a simple solution: transcribe every city council meeting and workshop in full, so all residents can stay informed on their own schedule. Accessibility to information should not depend on attendance. Finally, labeling me and others as “irrelevant,” “well funded,” or “anti-fire station” does not constitute an argument. A label is not a rebuttal. I encourage this resident to step back and consider this issue from every perspective before singling out neighbors and dismissing their concerns. Disagreement is not ignorance. An opposing viewpoint deserves genuine engagement — not personal attacks. Whatever has been written about me or my fellow residents, my position remains unchanged. A $33 million bond — one that could ultimately cost taxpayers up to $54 million — deserves a public vote. The residents of Vadnais Heights have both the right and the responsibility to weigh in on a financial commitment of this magnitude.

You got me. The article you wrote about me in the June 24 issue was delightful — and I enjoyed every word and picture. Thanks for all you do to keep the White Bear Lake community connected. Chris Quinn White Bear Lake

Thanks for petition I would like to say thank you, to the individuals that organized the petition, to let the voters in Vadnais Heights determine to fate of the bond issue for a new fire station. Also, a thank you to everyone that signed the petition, we have finally been heard. Many fire departments would be overjoyed with the facilities and equipment that the Vadnais Heights Fire Department enjoys. Hopefully, the use of the North fire station, which is only twelve years old, will be studied. Currently, it is used for storage. Maybe better utilization by the fire department should be considered. Whenever I want an expensive new toy, I save up the money for it and then pay cash. The city ought to consider this method, it really does work! The taxpayers cannot afford all of the luxuries the fire department would like. The city needs to realize that not every homeowner has a fully mature money tree growing in there back yard. Pay off the North station, save the money, and then determine what is actually needed. A good place to start saving for a new station would be by firing the law firm and communications consultant, that the city recently hired to promote a new fire station. The individuals arguing that “it will be more expensive in the future,” should remember that cars and houses will also become more expensive. They should all rush out and buy a new car and house today, in order to avoid the additional cost tomorrow. Construction is a cyclical business. When building slows down, contractors are forced to “sharpen there pencils” and bid more competitively. Any inflationary price increase will be minor, compared to the interest paid on a massive bond issue. The recently rescinded bond issue would have had the city paying roughly $54.5 million in combined principal and interest over the life of the bond. That works out to approximately $4,150 for every man, woman, and child currently living in the City of Vadnais Heights. It is time to rethink this entire issue.

Troy Kunze Vadnais Heights

at this cost, with this financing, before being committed to decades of debt. Residents have asked reasonable questions about renovation versus replacement, project scope, call and staffing data, site limitations, setbacks and variances, stormwater and drainage, the training tower, design-firm selection, cost estimates, and long-term tax impact. Pointing to years of scattered agendas, packets, workshops, and videos is not the same as clearly presenting the analysis in one understandable, transparent public record. A city website page gathering relevant studies, alternatives, cost estimates, engineering reviews, meeting materials, and financing information in one easy-to-follow location would be a good start. Taxpayers should not have to search years of documents and video to understand the basis for a project of this magnitude. The argument that the old station was not built for 24-hour staffing may establish that improvements are needed. It does not establish that this proposal is appropriately sized, properly priced, fully vetted, or the least costly responsible option. Taxpayers are also entitled to consider both principal and interest. Calling the annual tax impact “only” a certain amount does not make it insignificant to households already facing higher taxes, insurance, utilities, and everyday costs. Representative government does not mean residents must simply accept decisions without scrutiny. Elected officials should welcome questions, provide direct answers, and respect residents’ right to seek a public vote on a project of this magnitude. Personal attacks do not answer factual questions. They avoid them. Craig Johnson Vadnais Heights

Response to letter I’d like to ask Linda Demeny if she’s serious. Every one of those three points are crucial in order to have an educated populace that teaches truth. Please knock it off. Read a real book. And learn to think. No offense. Mike Chevalier Mahtomedi

Attacks don't answer questions Recent letters defending the South Fire Station project read less like independent responses to public concerns and more like a coordinated attack on the residents asking questions. Each uses the same playbook: critics suggested “must not have attended” meetings, are “taking potshots,” want the project restudied merely “to their satisfaction,” or are part of an “anti-fire station” effort trying to “steamroll” the city. The repetition of personal attacks is notable. It is easier to question residents’ motives than to address the record. No one is arguing that firefighters do not deserve a safe, healthy, functional workplace. The question is whether taxpayers were given a clear, complete, and objective case for this particular project,

Donald Jorgenson Vadnais Heights

Opposing views deserve engagement My recent letter regarding the proposed Vadnais Heights Fire Station bonds expressed my personal opinion — nothing more. I was therefore troubled when a fellow resident chose to publicly call out neighbors by name. That response was in poor

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR CONTINUED Mandate is indoctrination Three cheers for Linda Demeny in her letter (White Bear Press, June 24, 2026) about Minnesota’s new ethnic studies mandate for grades K-12. Passed in 2023 by a state legislature controlled by Democrats, these mandates become effective this fall. In reality, it appears some of the benchmarks to be met are indoctrination points. First grade: examples of ethnicity, equality, liberation, and systems of power. First graders are struggling to learn to read, to understand the basics of life around them,

friendship. Constructing meanings for words they can’t even say let alone read is wrong. Fourth graders concentrating on colonization, discrimination, oppression, racial groups, and resistance movements is outright indoctrination. Very few 9- or 10-year-olds experience or understand these concepts so the vehicle for informing them is the teacher whose personal viewpoints will easily be transferred to the children. Not so, you say? Every parent knows what happens when their child enters school. Soon the words “The teacher said” governs everything, even when it contradicts what parents tell

their children. Teachers become god-like. That means they have power over the children. Ironically, that kindergarten benchmark requires a child give an example of unfairness due to a power imbalance. Teachers create that power imbalance from day one. Oh, you say, the teachers will have training in how to instruct these standards. And will we be told the how and what of this instruction and what agency (its instructors and background) will conduct it? Don’t bet on it. Our children need basic skills in reading, mathematics, science. They need to learn kindness, friendship, common

raising questions. Thank you, Bonnie Balach, for your letter on philanthropy. I think our elected officials should take a closer look at foundations and nonprofits' tax advantage over the common taxpayer, and how much does end up benefiting the cause as intended in relation to the administrative cost. PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEF “This appointment is an opportunity to help ensure we build an Office of the Inspector General that is truly independent, transparent and focused on serving the people of Minnesota,” Senator Gustafson said. “When we passed this legislation, our goal was to strengthen accountability and restore public trust by creating an office that follows the facts, protects taxpayer dollars and operates free from political influence. I’m honored to continue to lay the foundation for that work.” The Office of the Inspector General was established during the 2026 legislative session through bipartisan legislation authored by Senator Gustafson, after first being passed by the Senate in 2025. The new office consolidates oversight functions and provides an independent authority to investigate fraud against state agencies while making recommendations to improve efficiency and accountability. The eight-member advisory commission, with two members from each legislative caucus, will conduct a nationwide search and recommend candidates to the governor for appointment as Minnesota’s first inspector general, subject to Senate confirmation.

Find Fourth of July weekend fun at state parks and recreation areas Minnesota state parks and recreation areas are great places to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday. Whether you’re looking for a day trip or a full weekend enjoying nature, there is something everyone can enjoy. “Most Minnesotans live within 30 miles of one of our 73 state parks and recreation areas, and we encourage everyone to spend time outdoors during Fourth of July weekend,” said Ann Pierce, director of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Parks and Trails Division. “Visitors can relax, connect with nature and celebrate the holiday in a peaceful setting.” For those seeking a quieter celebration, parks and recreation areas could be the perfect fit, since the use of fireworks is prohibited in these areas. DNR’s ParkFinder tool (mndnr.gov/ parkfinder) can help everyone find locations offering desired recreational opportunities. A few ideas for outdoor Fourth of July fun in one of Minnesota’s state parks or recreation areas include:

Visitors can also fish for free at most state parks, and many parks have equipment to lend. Learn more about fishing opportunities at state parks (mndnr.gov/state_parks/fishing.html) on the DNR website. During the holiday weekend, two state parks will offer programs to learn angling skills: • Fishing Frenzy Friday, Lake Carlos State Park, July 3, 9-11 a.m. • I Can Fish!, Whitewater State Park, July 4, 10 a.m.-noon; registration required

The Real Dogs of White Bear Lake BY RICKA MCNAUGHTON SPECIAL TO THE PRESS

A recurring column featuring glimpses into the lives, loves and everyday dramas of random dogs I run into on walks around the White Bear Lake region. “What is THAT?” It’s an innocently blurted question Lacie Starr often hears from people when they first meet her dog Harlie Rose – called Harlie for everyday purposes. People are naturally curious about an animal whose appearance seems an improbable mix of dog parts. She could bring to mind something dreamed up on the screen of an animation artist employed by, say, Disney or Pixar studios, going for a creature distinctly canine but, you know, with fanciful, outsized characteristics appealing to young audiences, suitable for eventual imprinting on backpacks and pajamas. But it turns out that Lacie herself, at one point, began to ask: what exactly have I got here? Five years ago, the youngest of Lacie’s children left for college, leaving her an empty

nester. The time was right to get a dog – the first in her adult life. Lacie had taken a shine to French Bulldogs, the small, rabbit-eared breed whose popularity had rocketed sky high, pushing the price of a purebred into the stratosphere as well. Happily, Lacy was also partial to a range of dogs generally called “the bullies,” and she found online the dog she would name Harlie Rose. She was an enchanting looking, roly-poly blob of a puppy, offered up as an English Bulldog/Boston Terrier mix. But as the dog’s heftier body evolved, Lacie did a DNA test, and she found that Harlie was actually half English Bulldog and half Pug. Harlie was chunkier than a Boston mix would be, but nonetheless the dog who became her amiable, affectionate, loyal and protective “bestie.” And quite intelligent, too, despite having a smile that suggests a mind unburdened by extremely important thoughts. At home she has two full toy boxes of amusements at her disposal and once a week gets to mingle at a doggie day care. Harlie is also a dog who aims to make clear that she wants what she wants. She’ll stare at some morsel on Lacie’s plate and stomp her front feet, not barking but opening and closing her mouth repeatedly as if doing so would shape her thoughts into actual words. She has a stubborn streak, too. It showed itself when she enrolled in obedience class and did not do especially well at the obedience part. But she nonetheless took home the award for congeniality. Harlie Rose wasn’t created on a movie studio’s drawing board. But she is no less a huge star in Lacie’s universe. And vice versa.

SUMMER MEMORIAL: Deadline approaches to include fallen Vietnam veterans from here; your odds are probably better if it’s not. If it’s someone from Texas you won’t be vying for the honor of placing it yourself.” Hanson shared additional details about The Wall That Heals event schedule and other ways for the community to participate. The memorial will begin with a motorcycle escort from Mariner Middle School to Polar Lakes Park as the truck hauling the exhibit arrives on Wednesday, Aug. 5. The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office will help to coordinate this event. Members of the public are invited to stand along the route in welcome. Volunteers will help to set up the display through the next day, and an official welcome ceremony will be held

at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6 with a keynote by retired four-star general and White Bear Lake graduate Paul Nakasone. A candlelight ceremony will be held at dusk on Friday, August 7. The wall display will be lit in orange to bring awareness to the deaths from and detrimental health effects of Agent Orange, a chemical herbicide used widely during the Vietnam War. The wall exhibit will be open to view for 24 hours a day. Taps will be played at sunset each evening, and Sunday will conclude with a closing ceremony. Event hosts want the Wall That Heals to be as accessible as possible to all attendees, Hanson said. There will be free parking, handicap spots

and golf carts available to provide transport from the further of the two parking lots in Polar Lakes Park. Hanson also mentioned that tours of the mobile education center are available by reservation to clubs, organizations and other larger groups. More information about the event can be found on the historical society website main page at whitebearhistory.org. There is a volunteer and motorcycle escort signup page on the website for anyone interested in lending a hand (or pair of wheels). Hanson said that WBLHS has already added more volunteer openings to accommodate demand. “I think we’re gonna get a crowd, which is great,” she said. “It’s

a fabulous situation to have. There’s no way we could do it without the support of the township, the legion and their auxiliaries. It’s amazing that folks are stepping up in any way they can.”

from the conflict but later passed away. Although Father’s Day has already come and gone, White Bear Lake and surrounding community residents still have time to submit a veteran for memorialization as part of the traveling memorial. The In Memory program will allow locals to add the name of a deceased friend or family member to a video board display while The Wall That Heals is present in the community. These veterans will also be given a memorial page on the VVMF website. Those who are added haven’t necessarily died within the last year; the only criteria is that the individual has died since their return from

Vietnam, regardless of cause of death. In order to submit a veteran for this honor, a copy of DD214 discharge orders and death certificate must be submitted to VVMF. Photos of the memorialized veteran during service and later in life are also welcomed as part of the display. An application can be found at https:// www.vvmf.org/InMemory-Program/. Community members have a little more time to request to be involved in a different way during the wall’s assembly. “If you have someone on the wall and you want to be there while their panel is placed, you can send an email to us at the historical society and we can coordinate that,” Hanson said. “It doesn’t have to be someone

VADNAIS HEIGHTS BUSINESS: Structural Wood Corp. to close at end of 2026 FROM PAGE 1

insisted on using lumber for new construction but now no longer do. From SWC’s Vadnais Heights home, country churches and city hockey arenas were common construction projects that used a lot of wood. “We were doing them constantly,” Schumacher said. Now those projects are much scarcer and often use more concrete and steel than in decades past.

Staffing issues

Finding staff has been another increasingly difficult aspect of business for SWC as the years went on. In the early days, SWC hired many staff directly from Weyerhaeuser. “Ninety percent of new employees at SWC in first 10 years came from Weyerhaeuser,” Schumacher said. According to Schumacher, many modern engineering degrees don’t provide the skills SWC needed for employees, which has led them to

being understaffed. Schumacher “Covid supply chain issues started guesses that issues of staffing are the beginning of a domino string,” endemic industry-wide with most that would lead to SWC closing its shops not able to hire all the staff doors said Schumacher. they would like. Despite lumber prices “I would be shocked if they weren’t skyrocketing during the pandemic running 20-30% below what they as homeowners stuck in their homes wanted to needed” for staffing, sought renovations, maintaining Schumacher supply said. became Despite difficult or years of impossible for attempting years. and are going to other companies for lumber. “Seventy percent of customers bought out in the last three to four years,” Schumacher said. SWC made a name for itself as a flexible shop that could take a variety of jobs. That model is increasingly antiquated with the industry becoming siloed into narrow slices of many businesses that only work on a specific slice rather than full projects overall. Schumacher expects that SWC will be “Assimilated into a bunch of other businesses,” that each do part of what SWC does, continuing “There probably won’t be another one of us again.” In the end, no single headwind from supply chain issues to market consolidation to trouble hiring to a shift away from wood within the construction industry were the final nail in the coffin for SWC simply that “there weren’t many opportunities and a boatload of challenges,” Schumacher said.

DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES BRIEFS Minnesota DNR offers boating tips for Fourth of July Waterways likely will be extremely busy in the days around and including the Fourth of July, as people across Minnesota enjoy getting out in their motorized and nonmotorized watercraft. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reminds all recreationists to remember the state's waters belong to all people, and everyone has the right to enjoy them. "Some people will be fishing, kayaking or paddleboarding, and others just out for a cruise, riding a personal watercraft, or wake surfing," said Lt. Eric Sullivan, leader of the DNR's statewide Marine Unit. "We all play a role in protecting our waterways and keeping them safe, so please remember: These are shared resources and it's up to everyone to ensure their activities don't negatively affect the environment or the safety and enjoyment of other users." A few things to keep in mind: • Prioritize safety: Wear a life jacket and, on watercraft that have one, an engine cut-off device. Leave alcohol on shore. • Own your wake: All motorized watercraft can create wakes that pose safety risks to other water users, erode shorelines, harm water quality, and negatively impact fish and wildlife habitat. The DNR recommends all boaters stay at least 200 feet from the shoreline or other boaters. Anyone creating a wake should avoid repetitive passes through the same area. • Minimize distractions: With so many people on the water, it's important to always pay attention to your surroundings, rather than looking at a phone or other on-board electronics. • Prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species: Always clean watercraft, trailers and equipment to remove aquatic plants and prohibited invasive species. Drain all water and leave drain plugs out during transport.

Dispose of unwanted bait in the trash. • Plan ahead: Public access sites likely will be busy. Extend courtesy to other people using the access and be ready to launch at the ramp. • Get a watercraft operator's permit: A law that went into effect in 2025 requires more operators to obtain a permit, which is aimed at educating boaters and making waterways safer for everyone. Beginning July 1, 2026, anyone who is 12 years or older and those born after June 30, 2000, must obtain a watercraft operator's permit to operate most motorboats and personal watercraft.

Check for invasive species before buying or selling docks or boats The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is reminding people to check boats and trailers, docks and boat lifts and all other waterrelated equipment for aquatic invasive species, especially when buying or selling used equipment. “Although we are past the initial spring shoreline equipment installation rush, the mid-season market for used equipment presents a much higher risk of spreading AIS,” DNR Invasive Species Training Coordinator April Rust said. “This is because used docks, lifts, boats, trailers and swim rafts moved midseason can carry attached AIS to waters that don’t have zebra mussels or other invasive species.” Minnesota law requires that docks and lifts remain out of the water for at least 21 days before they can be placed into another waterbody. In addition, anyone who transports a dock or lift with attached zebra mussels from a shoreline property to another location for decontamination needs a free permit (mndnr.gov/ invasives/ais_transport.html) to transport it legally. The DNR recommends these steps: • Look for zebra mussels on

the posts, footings, wheels and underwater support bars of docks and lifts, as well as any parts of boats, pontoons and rafts that might have been submerged in water for an extended period. Ensure water is drained from equipment before transporting. • Hire DNR-permitted lake service provider businesses (apps.dnr.state.mn.us/ ais_business_training/lake_ service_provider_permits/ public_website_list) to install and remove docks, lifts, rafts, boats and other water-related equipment. They have been trained on Minnesota’s aquatic invasive species laws and have experience identifying and removing invasive species. • Contact an area DNR aquatic invasive species specialist (mndnr.gov/ invasives/ais/contacts.html) to report any invasive species not already known to be in the water body. Whether or not a lake has any invasive species, Minnesota law requires people to: • Clean watercraft, trailers and equipment to remove aquatic plants and prohibited invasive species. • Drain all water and leave drain plugs out during transport. • Dispose of unwanted bait in the trash. • Never release bait, plants or aquarium pets into Minnesota waters. • Dry docks, lifts and rafts for 21 days before moving them from one water body to another. These additional steps reduce the risk of spreading aquatic invasive species: • Decontaminate watercraft and equipment – find free stations on the courtesy decontamination page of the DNR website (mndnr.gov/ decon). • Spray watercraft and equipment with high-pressure water or rinse with water if high-pressure water is not available. • Dry watercraft and equipment for at least five days before using in another water body.

MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES | CONTRIBUTED

Minnesota DNR adds 5 counties to deer feeding and attractant ban The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has added five counties to a deer feeding and attractant ban to reduce the risk of chronic wasting disease spread, following detections of CWD in wild deer in new areas of the state last year. “Where people place food or attractants out for deer, higher numbers of deer tend to congregate in one place,” said Paul Burr, acting big game program leader. “The feeding and attractant ban is one tool to reduce the unnatural congregating of deer and lower the risk of CWD spread.” The Minnesota DNR uses a deer feeding and attractant ban where it provides the

greatest benefit to the health of Minnesota’s white-tailed deer. The ban is in effect for 37 Minnesota counties, including Anoka, Ramsey and Washington counties. A map of the feeding and attractant ban area is available on the Minnesota DNR website (mndnr.gov/cwd/feedban. html). Even in areas outside the ban, the Minnesota DNR discourages people from feeding deer. People interested in helping deer should focus efforts on improving habitat to provide long-term food resources and shelter. For more information on how to improve private land for the benefit of deer and other wildlife, visit the Minnesota DNR website (mndnr.gov/ privatelandhabitat).

A lakeside escape, 1 sauna session at a time BY SHANNON GRANHOLM MANAGING EDITOR

Steam drifts across the shoreline of White Bear Lake as guests step from a 180-degree cedar sauna toward the water, reviving a Minnesota tradition that entrepreneur Drew Reuss hopes will help locals and visitors slow down, connect and embrace the outdoors. By now, visitors to White Bear Lake County Park have likely seen the barrel-shaped sauna sitting right on the lakeshore. The business name, NÓRDHAVEN, translates to “north harbor” in Scandinavian. Reuss says the name taps into his Minnesotan pride and haven being a safe place. “The whole idea is this is a safe, inviting place of rest and wellness in Minnesota,” he explained. Reuss and his wife Jen, along with their three children, have lived in White Bear Lake since 2023. Prior to that, the family traveled the world and lived abroad while doing mission work with a nonprofit called Youth With A Mission. They lived in Hawaii for three and a half years prior to moving to New Zealand in 2019. When they moved back to Minnesota, Reuss said they were starting to see more movement around mobile saunas. “More people were starting to utilize it, and community was forming around it. I don’t know if it is a resurgence, but it’s being embraced in a new way,” he said. Last March, they dove right in, turning the idea into reality. Reuss explained it was a bit of a challenge to work through the permitting process with Ramsey County and the city of White Bear Lake since a mobile sauna is a newer concept. “It was a long process but it’s super exciting to see the sauna here (at White Bear Lake County Park) where we envisioned it in those early days,” he said. NÓRDHAVEN’s tagline, “embrace the elements,” pays homage to the fact that there is no such thing as bad weather for a sauna. “If it's rainy, if it's snowy, if it's sunny, if it's windy, the sauna gives you that shelter. And then when you go out into the elements, it actually gives you that refresh,” Reuss said. He added that many people think about a sauna as something to do in the winter, but it can be just as refreshing in the summer. “It might be hot, but Minnesota has cold mornings, cold evenings and even if it's 85 or 90 degrees, it's 180 degrees in there. Going from there into the water is still going to be refreshing, and you're still going to get all the health benefits and wellness benefits of a sauna even if its summertime.”

A group enjoys a shared sauna session. A typical sauna session is 90 minutes, and the business offers a private or shared sauna experience with up to eight people. On average, the sauna temperature will usually be set at approximately 180 degrees. Sessions are 90 minutes long and typically include sitting in the sauna for 15 minutes, cooling off in the water or on the dock for four minutes and then returning to the sauna.

A sauna forces people to slow down and make connections. “In a place where we have constant dopamine fixes from unsustainable stimulant through our phones, our computer, a sauna forces you to slow down. It forces you to be present,” Reuss said. NÓRDHAVEN’s barrel-style sauna was built by a company called Nomad, which recently relocated from Minneapolis to Hudson, Wisconsin. Reuss converted an icehouse to a host station to offer private cool/heated changing spaces for before and after the experience, so sauna users don’t have to use the public restrooms. The business has also teamed up with Paddle North based out of New Brighton to offer sauna users paddle boards, as well as an inflatable dock. “We want to give people a reason to (be in) White Bear Lake, spend some time in the sauna, spend some time in the water, grab a bite to eat downtown … What a perfect day,” Reuss said. NÓRDHAVEN plans to offer police officers and firefighters complimentary sauna sessions to help them decompress from the heavy load they carry

with them. “We know they are going above and beyond day in and day out, so if we can give them a thank you in a way that is hopefully going to feel really good and refreshing to them, we just want to bless them in that way,” he said. Reuss is hoping the sauna will be set up at White Bear Lake County Park, except for July 4, hopefully through this fall and even into the winter. Eventually, they hope to hire additional sauna guides. Their ultimate hope would be to add more saunas to the fleet, and have a brick-and-mortar location, ideally in downtown White Bear Lake. “That would be our dream,” Reuss said. competitive military job interviews, scrutinized on their professionalism, job performance, physical fitness, self-development, community service and adherence to the Air Force core values. Master Sgt. Elizabeth Mahmood has lived in Mahtomedi for 15 years. She grew up in East St. Paul and decided to join the military while she was in high school after some encouragement from her cousin, who is now retired from the Army. “I was really impressed … I wanted to be a part of that community,” Mahmood recalled. She joined at the beginning of her senior year. “I graduated on a Friday and Ieft for basic that Monday and I’ve been with it ever since.” For her first 16 years in the Minnesota Air National Guard, she served as an aeromedical based technician. “It’s kind of like an EMT on an aircraft,” Mahmood explained. For the past two years, she has filled the role of first sergeant. “In that role, I work directly for the commander to help look after all of the airmen, making sure that the morale and welfare are good and the discipline is in order,” she said. Mahmood has five kids ranging in age from 4 to 25. For most of her military career she stayed home with her children but about a year and a half ago, she started working at her children’s school, St. Jude of the Lake, helping with enrollment. This past June, Mahmood traveled to Alaska for an exercise known as Red Flag. “The Air Force has three core values and one of them is excellence in all we do and that is why Sgt. Mahmood was

recognized. Her service reflected that excellence,” said Maj. Nathan Wallin, deputy state public affairs officer with the Minnesota National Guard. “In the Air Force training mission, she took care of more than 600 American and international troops all getting up to Alaska, securing their lodging and transportation, and for her efforts she was recognized as a ‘Superior Performer.’” Mahmood explained that normally, there would be more than one person coordinating that effort, but this time around it was just her. “We had a pretty big real-world mission going on that kind of threw a wrench into things. We worked hard to adapt and overcome, and make sure that both missions successfully happened, and it was a positive outcome,” she recalled. The sense of community is what she has enjoyed the most about her military career. “It’s like a giant family … I thought I was going to do my first six years and that was going to be it and here I am 18 years later and I’m probably going to finish strong,” she said. “I've deployed

four times. Every deployment has been very different, but you always know when you are going there, that it's just such a sense of community and the people next to you, on your left and right, both have your back. It makes my job easier being able to take care of those people when it's an extension of my own family.” “She is the best out of all of the Airmen in Minnesota,” Wallin said, comparing it to winning an Oscar or a Pulitzer. “From now on, she will be known as an Outstanding Airman of the Year. That is a title of considerable prestige

that she will have with her the rest of her career.” Mahmood says receiving the award for “doing her job” is humbling. “I strive to work hard and be the best in what I can be, and so to receive this award is a pretty large honor. I'm very grateful, and I could not have done it without the support of not only my husband and my kids, but all of my military family.” Managing Editor Shannon Granholm can be reached at 651-4071227 or whitebearnews@ presspubs.com.
