Gateway Fiber brings high-speed internet to Vadnais Heights BY ERIK SUCHY CONTRIBUTING WRITER
For those looking for better, more efficient internet speed in Vadnais Heights, they might not have to wait much longer. Gateway Fiber, an internet provider based in Fridley, has unveiled a plan to provide highspeed internet throughout Vadnais Heights. The company, whose mission is to provide communities with a “fairer, friendlier, faster internet experience,” aims to advance economic development through its services and improve broadband infrastructure. “During COVID, we all saw how necessary high-speed internet had become,” said Derek Leffert, head of government affairs for the company. “Unfortunately, it was a luxury before, and I think it’s been proven since that it’s no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity.” As part of the plan, Leffert said the process of setting up high-speed internet throughout the city is broken into four parts: planning, engineering, construction and installation. The company has completed the planning and engineering phases. During the construction phase, crews will inform residents of their intended work by posting door hangers. After that, mainline construction will begin in the city by laying fiber, which will run underground through orange conduit for protection. The fiber will then be connected to various drop points, ready for use in individual homes and businesses. Crews will then restore the areas where the fiber is installed to their original condition. “We realize that any utility process will

New leaders tee off as KMan Open enters its next chapter BY SHANNON GRANHOLM MANAGING EDITOR
After 40 years of never missing a golf tournament, the founding trio is handing it off to the next generation and hopeful that it will continue for many more years to come. What began as a going-away party with 24 golfers in 1986 has now grown to an annual tradition — 80 golfers participated in the 40th annual KMan Open last month. In 1986, George Kimball and his family decided to relocate from White Bear Lake to Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, so George could take a teaching job.
George’s friends, Dennis Mork and Steve MiddletonKoller, organized a golf tournament at the golf course at the University of Minnesota for George to say farewell. They called it the KMan Open Golf Tournament Farewell to the Kimballs. The trio played fastpitch softball together for many years, where George’s nickname “Kman” came about. “For whatever reason, Steve and Dennis decided to continue doing the tournament, and they continued to use the name KMan,” George explained. “It was interesting, and kind of ironic, that they chose a golf tournament for the farewell

The White Bear Lake Winter Farmers Market is moving. The monthly market is headed to the White Bear Lake Area High School’s Student Union this season and will kick off from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8. Michelle Bruhn, of Forks in the Dirt, says the new space is “larger and brighter.” Over 30 local food vendors will share locally grown and crafted items including meats, cheese, eggs, microgreens and maple syrup at the winter farmers market. Many locally preserved options, like jams, jellies, sauces, salsa, relish, sauerkraut, and kombucha will be available. Eco-smart gifting options like soaps, salves, candles and specialty handcrafted goods as well. There will also be a wide variety of canned and frozen produce, jams, and bath and body products available as well as participation from food trucks. “This market is a true community-driven event, with Pine Tree Apple Orchard donating hot apple cider and volunteers from the White Bear Food Shelf pouring it for all our neighbors,” Bruhn said. “Community booths from

appy Halloween everyone! If you’re like me, Halloween and fall is my favorite time of year. I love decorating for the fall season. A month before the temperatures actually drop, I dig my sweaters out from under my bed way earlier than I’m supposed to. But what can I say? I love fall! For the last few years, I have a tradition where I watch Tim Burton movies leading up to Halloween. Tim Burton is one of my favorite directors. And no one does Halloween or “spooky season” better than him. In September, I caught up on his Netflix television show “Wednesday.” The show follows Wednesday Addams and her friends during their time at Nevermore Boarding School. This month, I watched some of my favorite Burton movies “The Madeline’s Nightmare Before Christmas,” “The Corpses Bride” and “Edward Mail Scissorhands.” I also watched Mel Madeline Dolby Brooks’ “Young Frankenstein.” It’s a classic and one of my favorite movies of all time. A few years back, my dad and I watched it on a projector against the front of our house right before Halloween. It was pretty cold, but it’s a memory I’ll never forget. Now, it’s become a family tradition to watch it near Halloween … But not outside anymore. I’m not the only one getting into the Halloween spirit through. Multiple communities in our coverage area are hosting various events to celebrate as well. In Lino Lakes, residents can take a stroll through the Scarecrow Crawl. Participants decorate a scarecrow along the path at The Rookery Center. Rookery members and visitors can vote on their favorite scarecrow through Friday, Oct. 31. Make sure to stop by Press Publications’ scarecrow and grab a photo! Those who live in Vadnais Heights can also visit the Scarecrow Trail, located at Community Park until Monday, Nov. 3. The city also hosts a Halloween Party that includes a costume parade, games and a dance party. Before Halloween night, White Bear Lake hosts a “Scare in White Bear” 5K to get residents in the spirit. Participants race with glowsticks and race down a Halloween decorated path. After the race is complete, runners can trick or treat on Memorial Beach or grab a picture or two in the Halloween photo booth. Shoreview also joins in on the fun. At McCullough Park, the city hosts a Boo Bash for local families. Those who attend put on their best costumes, enjoy trick-or-treating along a spooky trail walk, take a hayride, enjoy music and build s-mores at a bonfire. This year, Shoreview residents can also check out the Halloween Puzzle Competition, happening on Thursday, Oct. 30 at the Shoreview Community Center. Make sure to check with your local churches, senior living facilities and organizations to see if they will be hosting a trunk-or-treat this year. Trunk-or-treats are a great way for children to safely go trick-or-treating, dress up in their costumes and enjoy Halloween. If you are planning on going trick-or-treating in your local neighborhood, make sure you wear bright, reflective costumes and carry flashlights to be seen by drivers, children should be accompanied by an adult and wait until you get home to eat treats. The fight for food access, our farmers and against fraud
I
t might come as a surprise to some people that I serve on the Agriculture, Veterans, Broadband Development, and Rural Committee. You might be asking, why is a senator from the suburbs serving on a committee about agriculture and rural communities? The truth is I wanted to serve on this committee and asked to be on it. I represent farmers right here in Lino Legislator Lakes and throughout Lingo Anoka County, Heather and it’s one of the most bipartisan Gustafson committees in the Senate. After all, what brings people together better than food and here in Minnesota our farmers and ranchers make more of it than just about every other place on Earth. I’ve been thinking a lot about that committee during the fall, as it’s Harvest Time and October is Farm to School Month. I had the privilege of passing legislation funding Minnesota’s own farm to school program this year. This program provides our kids with healthy, locally grown food while teaching them more about where the food comes from. At the same time, it’s another source of revenue for family farmers who
make this food in the first place. Food and farmers are also on my mind for other, more difficult reasons. Due to the federal government shutdown, almost half a million Minnesotans who depend on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits won’t receive them in November. Unfortunately federal funding for food access has already been reduced and area food shelves are struggling to meet increasing demand. At the same time, our farmers are facing major challenges as President Trump’s tariffs and other economic policies have hit our agriculture economy hard. Tens of thousands of jobs directly and indirectly, and billions of dollars of exports depend on a strong Ag economy. I’m hopeful that our federal partners can take a lesson from how our approach here in Minnesota, leave their egos at the door, and put the needs of people first. It’s time to find compromise, whether with our colleagues across the aisle or with our international trading partners, to find a path forward to help Minnesotans. One of my top priorities for helping Minnesotans in the upcoming session is to address any and all fraud being committed against our state. People are sick and tired of seeing stories in the news about brazen criminals stealing public dollars to line their pockets. It’s
time for this to stop. I authored the most significant anti-fraud proposal that’s ever passed the Senate, which would’ve created an independent Office of the Inspector General. This new office would be a watchdog ensuring our public dollars are being spent where they should be. It’s the best tool we can use to stop fraud. Despite getting 60 votes in the Senate, it didn’t get done in the House. I think we can change that, and I’ve been meeting regularly with fellow legislators, partners in law enforcement, and state agencies to make sure this happens in 2026. We have already taken important steps in our fight against fraud. Thanks to our work in 2025, we’ve empowered state agencies to act more quickly when red flags are detected and expanded the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension’s ability to take on financial crimes. These new tools are already being used, but I will continue to make ending fraud a top priority. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR of the South Fire Station were identified as to functionality, repair, and safety. As with any 30-year-old structure, there were many issues that needed attention and added to that need is the fact that the landscape of our city has changed since it was built, as has our Fire Department as it has evolved to meet the challenges that have come with that change. I urge anyone with concerns about the need and the cost of upgrading and improving the functionality and safety of the building to ask one your neighbors who may be a volunteer firefighter how they deal with inadequate sleeping quarters when on call, poor ventilation in bays, poor WiFi connectivity and a parking lot and exterior building in need of repair. They are the ones keeping you safe every day as they respond to emergencies that one day you may find you need help with.
I would like to thanks the organizers and all the volunteers of the White Bear Lake No Kings Day protest. The organization was great, and the volunteers were very helpful. I met people from neighboring communities who were able to enjoy our downtown area. It made for a safe and meaningful way for people to express their right to free expression. Appreciate law enforcement We are writing to commend the White Bear Lake Police Department, especially Chief Dale Hager, for their professionalism and helpfulness in preparing for last Saturday’s No Kings Day in White Bear Lake. Throughout the process, the police department responded with appropriate concern for the safety of the whole community as well as an equal concern that our citizens’ Constitutional right to protest be protected. As the day turned out, both concerns were respected by all who attended, as was the case across the nation. The police officer and car on duty that the crowd donated to pay for had an uneventful afternoon, though I cannot say a quiet one, given all the lovers of the American Constitution celebrating their rights and the many cars honking in support of the protest! Thanks again to Chief Hager and the excellent White Bear Lake Police Department.

Improve publishing of opinions I much appreciate the letters to the editor; it is one of the first things I go to each week. Unfortunately, I often feel I am presented only one side of an issue and wish I could hear the other side as well. For example, Jon Holter made several claims in his excellent Oct. 15 letter questioning the fiscal policies of Vadnais Heights. He claimed taxes on Vadnais Heights properties will have been raised 30% in just two years and questioned whether Vadnais Heights was exercising sufficient fiscal restraint in its spending practices, specifically questioning the needs for the fire station. I was left questioning if the first claim could be true and wished I had further input to form an informed opinion of the second. When confronted, the suspect swung her arms, grabbed the merchandise and ran out of the store. The incident is under investigation. • Deputies responded Sept. 22 to a report of a male that went into the deli area of a grocery store in the 1000 block of Meadowlands Drive, put two hoagie sandwiches in his pocket and left the store without paying. The incident is under investigation. • Deputies issued a trespass notice and theft citation Sept. 22 to a 47-year-old woman from Maplewood after she was caught by loss prevention employees stealing nearly $170 worth of catfish, steaks, sausage, cocktail shrimp and other items from a business in the 800 block of County Road E East. • A 36-year-old St. Paul woman reported that someone broke the passenger side mirror of her car Sept. 24 while it was parked outside for several days in the 700 block of County Road F East. The incident is under investigation. • Deputies cited a 32-year-old man from St. Paul Sept. 24 for theft after a loss prevention employee at a business in the 800 block of County Road E East caught him attempting to leave the store without paying for merchandise. • Deputies issued a trespass notice Sept. 25 and arrested a 39-yearold woman on two Ramsey
County warrants for disorderly conduct and domestic assault after being called to a gas station in the 1000 block of County Road E East because she refused to leave the store’s bathroom. • Deputies responded Sept. 25 to a report of an erratic driver and found him at a gas station in the 3400 block of Centerville Road. A man was transported to a hospital for evaluation. • A man reported Sept. 27 that he rode his electric bike to a grocery store in the 900 block of County Road E East, parked it outside the store and went inside. When he came back outside, the bike had been stolen. The incident is under investigation. • Deputies issued a trespass warrant Sept. 27 and cited a woman from St. Paul who was caught attempting to steal merchandise from a store in the 800 block of County Road E East.

• Deputies assisted the Lino Lakes Police Department Sept. 23 searching for a man on a fourwheeler in the 0 block of Bald Eagle Point. The man fled from police into a swamp, where he was believed to be hiding. Using the K-9 team and other deputies, they located the man and took him into custody. • Deputies arrested a man Sept. 26 in the 2600 block of Parkview Drive for domestic assault after being called to a report of an assault and learning that the suspect assaulted and threatened his father during an argument. • Deputies arrested a man Sept. 27 for DWI test refusal and terroristic threats after responding to a vehicle crash in the 5700 block of Otter View Trail and learned the vehicle the suspect was driving struck another vehicle. The suspect then walked up to a couple in their front yard and accused them of slashing his tires, which they did not.

• Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies took several reports of vehicle tampering overnight Aug. 30-31 in the Oakhill Court and Cedar Street neighborhoods. Some of the vehicles had items stolen from them. Open garages were also hit, as a Cedar Street resident reported items missing. A Wildwood Avenue resident reported a suspicious person holding a flashlight digging through a vehicle at 4:52 a.m. A concerned citizen phoned from the neighborhood wondering why law enforcement was patrolling the area and was advised that deputies were on the lookout for suspicious people due to the vehicle tampering reports. • A suspicious and highly flammable act of vandalism that was reported Sept. 12 on Wildwood Avenue of gasoline poured on the complainant’s vehicle turned out to be a leaking gas can in the bed of his truck. • A motorist was cited Sept. 13 on Hall Avenue and White Pine Lane for failure to come to a complete stop at the stop sign at that intersection.

• In the Case of the Contained Canines, deputies took a report on Aug. 31 from the 9000 block of 75th Street N. about finding two restrained dogs. A short while later, deputies took another call from the 9000 block

The owners were soon reunited with their dogs. • The owners of Axdahl’s Garden Farm in the 7000 block of Manning Avenue N. on Sept. 3 reported a former employee trespassing on their farmland. The trespasser left the property when asked to do so. • A resident in the 9000 block of Joliet Avenue N. on Sept. 3 reported that an unknown person reported that items the complainant purchased on Amazon had not been delivered. The scammer then asked for a refund or gift cards for the undelivered items and had them shipped to the Amazon lockers at the Stillwater Cub Foods store. • A speeding motorist was cited Sept. 5 in the 7000 block of Jamaca Avenue N.

• In the Case of the Highway Huskies, deputies on rolling patrol at 3:00 a.m. Sept. 1 in the 3000 block of Century Avenue N. observed two Huskies walking into the lane of traffic, such that one of them was almost hit by a vehicle. Deputies rounded up both dogs and turned them over to animal control, which then turned them over to Northwoods in Wyoming. • A catalytic converter was reported stolen Sept. 2 from a vehicle parked at an Iris Street address. • Drug paraphernalia was reported found Sept. 2 on the trail near Quail Street and Briarwood Avenue. Deputies took custody of the glass pipe for destruction. • Loud stomping was reported at 10:54 p.m. Sept. 3 at an apartment complex on Wildwood Road, as part of
an ongoing issue. • Deputies on patrol Sept. 4 observed a suspicious vehicle parked in the Wedgewood Park lot and started to investigate the expired tabs on the vehicle, as well as the driver sleeping behind the wheel. Before deputies could confront the suspect, they were summoned away on a priority call. Shortly afterward, deputies returned to the scene, but the driver had awakened, taken his unregistered vehicle and skedaddled. • A motorist was arrested at 12:35 a.m. Sept. 5 on Wildwood Road for violating a domestic abuse nocontact order, following a traffic stop for expired tabs. • A suspicious vehicle reported parked in front of an address in the 1000 block of Ashley Lane on Sept. 5 turned out to be parked legally. When the complainant mentioned damage to the vehicle, deputies determined the damage wasn’t recent. • A juvenile was reported for throwing a rock through the window of a vehicle parked on Wildwood Road on Sept. 6. • After juveniles were reported for ding-dong-ditching a Grove Street residence on Sept. 6, deputies found the juveniles and issued them a verbal warning.

Sculpting the self, exploring identity Some artists find themselves at the potter’s wheel. Others, like Chloe Bischoff, White Bear Center for the Arts’ clay studio assistant, find themselves in Red Wing, playing Clue with four other creatives in a historic tower that once housed writers, painters, and thinkers for decades. This past September, Chloe embarked on the Anderson Center’s prestigious Early Career Artist Residency, a month-long immersive experience for emerging artists across disciplines. Nestled along the Cannon River in Red Wing, the Anderson Center is known as an oasis of community, giving artists the gift of time and space to dive deep into their practice. “My time at the Anderson Center was remarkable,” Chloe says. “I’ve never had such an extended period where my only focus was to create art, think deeply, and take in my beautiful surroundings.” The residency brought together five artists from across five different disciplines, sparking long, late-night conversations about craft, creativity, and everything in between. Chloe approached her residency

with big questions: “What lies at the intersection of autotheory and animism? How can clay act as a mirror, facilitating and enriching the concept of the self? And how has her own relationship with clay informed the way she moves through the world? Rooted in queer ecology and the surrealist traditions of artists like Remedios Varo, her work at the Anderson Center explored identity as something fluid, entangled, and cocreated with the natural world. The result was a sculptural self-portrait, a two-layered “mask” featuring a sculpted inner face, modeled after Chloe’s own face, peeking through
an abstract outer shell referencing imagery from nature’s architecture, such as skeletal formations, cellular organelles, and fungal growth. Inspired by Jane Bennett’s concept of vital materialism, which suggests that all matter is inherently alive and energetic, Chloe approaches her artistic practice as a relationship between two entities, not merely shaping or using a lifeless material. Back in the clay wing at WBCA, Chloe brings that same philosophy: “I'm not simply firing kilns, I'm participating in a form of 'synthetic geology' in which I steer the physical and chemical forces that humans have partnered with for thousands of years to create long-lasting and wellloved objects from clay!”
Growing green: Art meets sustainability This fall, White Bear Center for the Arts (WBCA) is turning over a new leaf, literally. Thanks to a grant appropriation from the Rice Creek Watershed District (RCWD), WBCA is offering a series of eco-conscious art classes designed to inspire deeper connections to the land, water, and sustainable living. The idea is to use art as a bridge to nature. Using art as a means for people to connect to nature creates a different access point for education and engagement with the land and water in ways that feel personal, meaningful, and approachable. One of the RCWD’s goals is to work with local organizations and communities to help people better understand and care about water and the environment in real-world ways, and as RCWD’s Outreach and Communications Manager, Kendra Sommerfeld says, “WBCA is a strong partner in that effort.” So, this season, WBCA offered three free events that explore topics like native plants and regenerative gardening practices, each with a creative, hands-on experience, aiming to reach people who might not connect with traditional water quality data or technical reports. “The Rice Creek Watershed District has helped us to
introduce conversations around water-conscious living through a creative approach,” says WBCA Creative Director Sara Nephew. “If a handful of people walk away more curious and connected to this place we all share, that feels worthwhile. In September, a class led by Michelle Bruhn focused on no-dig gardening and Hügelkultur, two kinds of regenerative gardening methods that emphasize soil health and low-impact design. Coming up in December, landscape designer Kyle Manley will lead a Matrix Garden Design session focused on creating resilient, lowmaintenance gardens using native plants tailored to the Upper Midwest. “This partnership with WBCA is a great example of how we can use art to build connections between people and the water in their own communities,” Kendra says. “It helps make important water issues easier to understand and more relatable to people than other highly technical things like data and graphs.” By blending art with environmental stewardship, WBCA’s fall programming is planting seeds of change. Showing how creative expression can make environmental awareness more approachable to make a difference, one class at a time.

PUBLIC HEARING ANNUAL MEETING FOR CITY STORM WATER PROGRAM NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that the City of Vadnais Heights City Council will meet and hold a public hearing on Wednesday, November 5, 2025 at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall, 800 E. County Road E, to review the Storm Water Pollution Prevention Program (SWPPP) for 2025. The meeting will comply with the City’s Phase II Storm Water Permit (#MN R 040000) and will be held at City Hall in conjunction with the regular Council Meeting beginning at 7:00 p.m. City staff and their consultant will make a brief presentation on the program and the year’s accomplishments and challenges. The SWPPP is part of the City’s requirements for a federally mandated storm water permit program that is administered by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. The overall goal of the program is to limit or reduce the amount of sediment and pollution that enters surface waters. The City works closely with its two partners, the Vadnais Lake Area Watershed Management Organization (VLAWMO) and the Ramsey Washington Metro Watershed District (RWMWD), in the review of new and redevelopment projects. Interested persons may review the SWPPP document at City Hall and may make oral or written comments during or following the public meeting. The SWPPP document is available for public review at City Hall during normal business hours. be a disruptive process,” said Leffert. “We will hold different events in neighborhoods during the summer to try and connect with the community, tell them what’s going to happen and answer any questions they may have.” The company also maintains a selfdescribed “industry-leading damage prevention process,” which is audited by a third party to ensure the design process runs smoothly. Technicians also work with the company’s excavation crews to ensure they follow safe practices, which helps reduce damage during installation. Leffert noted that the process has
been adopted and embraced by several cities near Vadnais Heights. As part of the installation process, the company’s installers will visit each property to design a path for burying fiber-optic cables in each yard. They will return to place the cable in the ground, allowing the fiber to enter the home or business and provide high-speed internet to the property. But what makes Gateway Fiber’s internet significant? According to Leffert, it comes down to several factors. “Our service is historically one of the fastest in the United States. If you look at the ranking of nationwide broadband providers, we consistently
rank in the top 10. We have a 99.998% uptime, which means we have a very reliable service. The only time we’re ever down is when our fiber gets cut by construction crews, or if there’s some sort of an issue with our middle-mile provider, which is very rare.” The company’s pricing model further prioritizes a complete absence of hidden fees, contracts and installation costs for its customers. “We’re not the kind of company that comes in and requires you to have a contract. We’re not going to tell you it’s going to be ‘this price’ and then jack it up 12 months from now. Our price has been the very same from the very beginning.”
While there is no exact timeline for when Gateway Fiber will start construction, Leffert said it will take two to three years for all of Vadnais Heights to have high-speed internet. “We try to do about 5,000 homes and businesses a year. We can escalate that if we need to. Sandra Bjorndahl
vintage jewelry and hat business they ran from the 1990s until the late 2010s. Sandra was always thoroughly active, and loved gardening, biking, singing in choirs, leading Bible studies, and hosting events. She was devoted to her doggies, her faithful companions. But her life was marked first and foremost by her faith in God. Her exemplary strength and endurance through pain and hardship was a testament to all. This faith matured, shaping her into a prayer warrior for her family and friends, having an eternal impact on countless souls. Sandra went to be with the Lord peacefully with her children at her side. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, and her children Kristen, Erik, and Jodi. She is survived by her twin sister, Susan; her sister, Judy; her children Amy, Kirk (wife Nancy), and Kirsten (husband Greg); and her grandchildren, Julia, Tim, Torin, Raith, and Gideon. A celebration of life will be held at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church on Nov. 10 at 10:30am. Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 and a luncheon will follow the service at the church. The family encourages colorful attire and festive hats to celebrate Sandra’s love of vintage hats. In lieu of
Sandra grew up in Clear Lake, Iowa, where her love for water flourished through teaching swimming, lifeguarding, synchronized swimming, and waterskiing. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1955. An energetic, joyful, and kinetic soul, she finished her education at the University of Minnesota in 1959, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. She met Robert on a blind date set up by his sister and they married in August 1959. Their love bloomed into 48 years of marriage. In the 1980s and 1990s, she expanded her enjoyment of water by coaching synchronized swimming at the high school level. Sandra and her twin sister absolutely loved running Twin’s Treasures - the
flowers the family encourages memorials to World Vision and local animal shelters.
David Christian Dixen David died on 10/14/2025 at age of 85. He is survived by wife, three children, eight grandchildren, and three great grandsons. He had a rich, full life. He had a career as an airline pilot for over thirty years, starting with Braniff and ending with Delta. He was also a science teacher, a chemist, and a sheep farmer. He was involved with community as a volunteer firefighter, an AARP driving safety instructor, and an officer in CAP, Parks and Trails Council, and Tapestry Folkdance Center. He loved dancing, singing, biking, sailing, silent sports, and flying his own airplane. He was a lifelong learner with a special interest in energy conservation. Memorial Service November 8, 2025 at 11AM at White Bear Unitarian Universalist Church. Address is 328 Maple St., Mahtomedi, MN.

WHITE BEAR LAKE — A tradition in the city is for the police chief to provide an update to the City Council twice a year. In his most recent update, Police Chief Dale Hager said that there have been increases across the board when it comes to traffic stops, arrests, case numbers and parking citations but noted that doesn’t necessarily mean there is an uptick in crime. “Do we have more crime in White Bear Lake? No, I don’t believe we do. We just have officers that find more stuff,” Hager explained. “I have a group of leaders, specifically my four sergeants, who are doing a great job incentivizing their officers to be out there and making sure they are making a difference.” Hager said when he comes back for his next update in April, council members might be shocked at the increases but suggested that it is not something the average citizen would likely notice. “I don’t think they are feeling it … I just think that we are rising back up to a level that we saw preCOVID,” Hager explained. “COVID and the George Floyd era really took a bite out of law enforcement and their desire to be active, so we are just getting back to normal, that’s my opinion.” Mayor Dan Louismet said, “I agree it doesn’t feel like we have more crime, but it is nice to hear that law enforcement, from a bootson-the-ground standpoint, feels like they are returning to a sense of confidence in their role … I think that is encouraging.” Hager also provided an update on the dog leash ordinance and the hiring of a seasonal “lakeshore” community service officer (CSO) to patrol the area from Memorial Beach to Lions Park. Hager said the department had around 200 documented visits to the dog beach from May through September. “Things did not go the way we had all planned,” Hager explained, adding that the department got a bit of a late start on the changes and, ultimately, two possible hires for the position ended up not working out. “We are hoping we can start that process earlier,” Hager said. For most of the season, Hager says the department was focused on educating the public about the leash ordinance rather than “dropping the hammer” and writing citations for people who didn’t know they were violating the ordinance. Once

He guessed the department wrote approximately 10 citations. “We found when we were there that everybody seemed to want to comply with the leash ordinance. We know that is not always the case when we aren’t there,” Hager said. “We do think that over time, that it will just become the new norm.” “It takes time to shift culture. I think we made some progress this summer,” Louismet said, adding that hopefully next summer, a dedicated lakeshore CSO will “go a long way.” Council Member Kevin Edberg inquired about DUI stats. Hager said that 2025 is “drastically outpacing” the numbers for the last two years. So far in 2025, the department has had 123 DUIs compared to 96 in 2024 and 82 in 2023. “We anticipate a 50% increase from last year,” Hager said. Robb Olson of GDO Law, the city’s prosecuting attorney, said that even though those numbers seem high, DUIs are about half of what they used to be 15 to 20 years ago. “In 2009 in the city of White Bear Lake, we had 300 DUIs. I couldn’t believe it. Statewide, we had about 40,000, it’s now about half of that,” he said. Edberg wanted to know what percentage of DUIs were affiliated with the use of cannabis. Olson said less than 10%. Hager mentioned that last year, state officials told him approximately 60% of all DUIs have at least two drugs, usually alcohol and something else, in their system. Other topics that are on the horizon and will likely need further discussion at both the department and city level, Hager said, include bitcoin machines, e-bikes/ scooters, motorcycle laws and recruiting. “Great way to cap off a great season,” said coach Nate Tretsven after the Mahtomedi tennis team captured third place in state Class 2A tournament last week. “We are super proud of the amount of improvement they showed from start to finish.” The Zephyrs (19-5), who were the No. 1 seed, edged St. Peter 4-3 before Rock Ridge tumbled them 7-0 in the semifinals. They fended off Hill-Murray 5-2 for third place. Rock Ridge (26-1) beat Blake 5-2 for the championship. Action took place at Lifetime Fitness in Bloomington. Winning against St. Peter were Mallory Langer, Lily Carlson, Alexia Tempelis/Brooke Berg and Ellis Krause/Ellie Driscoll. Rock Ridge, a co-op based in Virginia, was “very strong,” Tretsven said. “Five of seven matches were close; they just had a little more of an edge.” Hill-Murray was an exciting finale with five matches going to third-set tie-breakers. The Zephyrs
had also beaten H-M 5-2 in September. “We knew this would be a tougher match than the first time,” Tretsven said. “Credit to our girls, they handled the pressure very well and we were able to win four out of the five tiebreakers.” The strong rivalry with H-M “fired them back up” after the semifinal loss. Katherine Smith/Berkley Blaisdell won a marathon tie-breaker 16-14 and finished 14-5 together. Also winning tie-breakers were Tempelis/Berg 13-11, Krause/Driscoll 10-7, and Braelyn Skow 10-8. Mallory Langer squeezed out a 1-singles win 7-6 (5), 7-5 against a foe who beat her 6-0, 6-0 earlier. Carlson lost a tie-breaker 10-8. Abby Manger lost 6-1, 6-2. Zephyrs coast into section football finals
Seeking a fourth consecutive state trip, Mahtomedi has reached the Section 4AAA finals with wins over St. Paul Johnson 25-3, 25-8, 25-10, and St. Paul Como Park 25-11, 25-8, 25-15. The top-seeded Zephyrs (20-9) will duel No. 2 Chisago Lakes (16-9) Wednesday at home at 6 p.m.
Mahtomedi scored every which-way and defeated Highland Park 62-13 in the Section 4 semifinals Saturday, setting up a rematch with Cretin-Derham Hall for the title at home Friday. The Zephyrs (8-1) nipped the Raiders (6-3) three games ago 28-27. Mark Graff opened the scoring with a 66-yard run, then passed to Gavin Bifulk for a 68-yard score. Graff was 4-for-4 for 105 yards, with Bifulk catching three for 88 yards. The Zephyrs had three TD’s on returns: Jeremiah Haas with an interception, 49 yards, Isaac Opitz on a kickoff, 80 yards, and Cullen Taylor on a fumble recovery, six yards. Jacob Reubish carried six times for 83 yards and two touchdowns. Moseh Mouacheupao and Isaac Opitz also scored on runs. Everett Kirkwood booted eight extra points. Highland Park’s Brandon Jackson carried 22 times for 148 yards and two touchdowns.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Oluwatomi Animasaun White Bear Lake Football & Track October 29, 2025 Oluwatomi Animasaun — Tomi for short — has capped a prolific three-year tenure as White Bear Lake’s quarterback. This season, the fleet, 6-foot, 180-pound senior passed for 1,023 yards and six touchdowns, and ran for 556 yards and eight touchdowns, including gallops of 56, 63 and 44 yards. In his career, Animasaun completed 51 percent of his passes for 3,366 yards and 21 touchdowns with 14 interceptions, and ran for 811 yards and nine TD’s. A two-sport standout, he medaled twice at the state track meet in June, placing sixth in long jump and eighth in 300 hurdles, also qualifying in the 100 dash.

Washington Square Bar & Grill recently partnered with Winebow and the White Bear Lake Area Food Shelf for a sip event, offering samples of wine and cocktails in return for a non-perishable item for the food shelf. In addition, attendees donated payments online, which Washington Square agreed to match. The effort raised almost $700 for the food shelf.

BEARS SPORTS BRIEFS White Bear Lake’s football season ended with a loss to Prior Lake 49-22 in the state Class 6A playoffs. The Bears finished 2-7 after a 2-0 start. Scoring plays were a 48-yard pass from Tomi Animasaun to Biren White, a 10-yard run by Colton Butts, and a 21-yard pass from Wyatt Stachowiak to Easton Miles. Animasaun was 9-for-17 for 135 yards and Stachowiak 4-for-10 for 73 yards, with one interception each. White, a freshman, caught five for 77 yards, Easton two for 57 and Butts three for 41. Prior Lake limited the Bears to 72 yards on 29 runs. The White Bear Lake sophomores posted an 8-0 season, outscoring opponents 279 to 114. Leaders were quarterback Chase Bachmeier and runningback Owen Louismet on offense, and Tyler Lewis, Jax Howard, and Otis Buffalo on defense. Coach Tom Determan cited the Bear sophs as “an amazing team” that gave their best effort in everything asked of them. “They have a bright future here at WBL,” he said.

White Bear Lake’s season ended with a loss to Roseville Area 25-20, 25-14, 25-16 in the second round of Section 4AAAA. The Bears finished 17-12 overall and 5-4 in the Suburban East, their best records
since 2002. They beat St. Paul Central 25-15, 25-22, 25-17 in the first round of the section, after losing their conference finale to Forest Lake 3-0.

I was told by my dad, but I certainly want to make it keep happening and make it bigger and better while holding true to the ideals and the values and everything that makes it unique,” Nick explained. George has no doubt: The tournament is in good hands. “These guys will be very strong at doing this; they are organized and sharp, and they'll probably do a lot of cool things that we haven't thought of or done,” George said. Mark your calendars. The 41st annual KMan Open is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 19, 2026 at Logger’s Trail Golf Course in Stillwater. because Dennis and Steve are golfers, but I’m not … It was more about getting together, hanging out with friends.” After a few years, the Kimball family decided to move back home to be close to family. Every year, the third Saturday in September would be marked on the calendar and reserved for the tournament. In 2006 George’s son, Nick Kimball, and James Hanneman, both White Bear Lake Area High School grads, played in the tournament for the first time along with a couple of other friends. “I had grown up knowing about it, hearing about it, knowing that dad was going off to this golf tournament,” Nick recalled. “Slowly, over the last 19 years, more and more of my buddies have joined. Nick, who like Hanneman is a once-a-year golfer, said connections he has made from his various life stages have joined in over the years, from high school, to law school, to other dads he has met through his children’s sports. “It’s become the highlight of the year, for all of us,” Nick said. In 2008, the tournament took on a whole meaning after the Kimball family suffered a tremendous loss. George’s daughter and Nick’s sister, Angie Kimball, passed away at the age of 30 after a battle with lung cancer. That year, the tournament also became a fundraiser, raising funds for a cause that George says was “right up Angie’s alley” — the White Bear Lake Educational Foundation’s Angel Fund, which benefits families in need within the school district. At the 40th annual, a record $1,700 was raised. “It doesn’t seem like much, but it adds up,” George said. Since 2008, the tournament has donated more than $20,000 to the cause. George said he wasn’t necessarily ready to retire from the role as organizer of the tournament, but the other two organizers were, and he knew it wouldn’t be the same without them, so he asked someone he could trust. His son. “He told me I had to,” Nick said laughing. James added, “And then they told me I had to.” Fun fact: In addition to organizing the KMan, the two high school buddies now work together in the Hennepin
