City seeking state funding for boulevard trail project BY ERIK SUCHY CONTRIBUTING WRITER
wanted to be able to publish our minutes there, as well as community news and nonprofit events.” Both men approached former Press Publications owner Gene Johnson with the idea. Because an
For some time, the city of Vadnais Heights has been pursuing a new trail project that will not only offer safety enhancements but also connect more neighborhoods, parks and schools and promote recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. That project, dubbed the Vadnais Heights Boulevard Trail Project, is one the city hopes will receive the funding it needs soon. The project has received funding from both Ramsey County and the city in the amounts of $5.7 million and $1.2 million, respectively. The city is also requesting $6 million in state funding to begin work on the trail. “We are requesting this amount to complete the funding package and move this project to construction,” said Public Works Director Jim Hauth. “Without support, the funding for this project makes it infeasible for the city and Ramsey County to do it alone.” The project will consist of a 2.25-mile multiuse trail along the southern edge of Vadnais Lake. The trail will be a 10-foot-wide paved bituminous path, consistent with regional trail standards. In most sections, it will be physically separated from traffic by a 5-foot boulevard or a concrete curb and gutter. In boulevard locations where right-of-way access is especially tight, retaining walls will be built to maintain existing slopes and allow for construction. The city will also realign portions of the shoulder and regrade ditches to improve drainage and create sight distance through the curves.

Women of Today creates community 1 service project at a time BY SHANNON GRANHOLM MANAGING EDITOR
Although the group has been around for decades, many people don’t know it exists. “We fly under the radar,” explained Vadnais Heights resident Angie Dreher, who joined Women of Today 13 years ago. In 1950, a group of dedicated women formed the Mrs. Jaycees of Minnesota with a mission of community service. Several name and organizational changes occurred over the years, and in July 1985, the organization became known as the Minnesota Women of Today. Since that time, Women of Today has grown
