“We put up with it because it's his passion. It is fun to come home and see all of the cars out in the road watching what he has done,” she said.

Last year, Barno decided that in addition to smiles, his show could also make a difference.

During the five-week show, he raised almost $1,200 for the Ronald McDonald House. This year's show again will raise money for that cause.

People who donate will receive a wristband that lights up with the show.

If you drive by the Barno Family Lights Show, be sure to tune into channel 106.7 to hear the songs. The show will run through Sunday, Jan. 5. As for next year's show, that is already in the works. For more information, fi nd Barno Family Lights on Facebook.

CIRCLE PINES — A Christmas light show in Circle Pines has taken holiday decorating to a new level.

Circle Pines resident Justin Barno is the mastermind behind the show at 4102 88th Ave. NE. During his years at home, Barno helped his parents decorate for the holiday, but he was inspired to go beyond your average Christmas lights and infl atables after he saw Richard Holdman's house online. Holdman is one of the fi rst creators of an animated light display.

“I got inspired because I love Christmastime.

Every year I try to grow,” Barno explained.

For 10 years, Barno has tried to top the previous year's show by adding props and making the show more complex. The show has also trickled its way into his neighbors' yards, with their permission, of course. The show started out as a static display with regular Christmas lights, but has now transitioned into an animated pixel show. Each and every pixel is a combination of red, green and blue, and is programmed to songs.

This year's show has nine songs.

“I have taken Christmas light design to a whole new level versus a static display. Just the Christmas tree is made up of 2,300 lights,” Barno explained. His dream is to one day get into commercial Christmas displays.

Each show takes a year to plan/program and about a week to physically set up. Every year Barno takes a week off from work to make sure the show is ready to go live around Thanksgiving. It is the smiles that keep him going.

“I enjoy seeing the smiles on everyone's faces,” he said. “I get people that come by every night the show goes. It is the same songs, but they still sit there and watch it.”

Barno watches “The Great Christmas Light Fight” on ABC each year to keep up with what others are doing in their displays. One of his friends, Ron Howard of California, is on the show this year. Barno met Howard through a social media group and created a Christmas light prop from Howard's display. “It’s really hard to get on that show. They really like static displays,” Barno explained.

Despite the minor inconvenience over the winter for Barno's family, they wouldn't have it any other way. Last year, the family had to hang garbage bags over their windows to keep all of the Christmas lights and car headlights out of the living room. This year, Barno's wife, Nikki, said

Jan. 15 – Come hear a talk on the history of women’s suffrage in Minnesota given by Dr. Kristin Mapel Bloomberg, professor of Women’s Studies and Hamline University endowed chair in the humanities. Professor Bloomberg will speak from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Stillwater Public Library. Arrive early to view the traveling exhibit panels and stay to hear the talk.

This class will save you up to 10 percent on your auto insurance. Completion of an eighthour course qualifies you for the discount. Wedding expo returns for 35th year

Community foundation invites grant proposals for 2020 The Shoreview Community Foundation provides funds to nonprofit organizations that serve the Shoreview community. Grants focus on recreational places (parks, open space, wetlands, woodlands), community enhancement and leadership development, human services, arts and cultural activities and historical preservation.

Applicants are invited to submit a letter of intent describing the proposed grant request.

Letters will be accepted Jan. 1 through Feb. 14. Letters should include a brief description of the program, project or service and include the following information: geographic area served, number or anticipated number of Shoreview residents served, organizational status [501c(3) or government entity], whether or not the organization has previously

received a grant from SCF, and amount requested. Letters of intent should be sent to shoreviewcommunityfoundation@gmail.com.

Cross-generational connections

W

hile attending a couple of community events last week I was reconnected with some fond, yet distant childhood memories.

It’s difficult to resist the spirit of the holiday season when you hear the unmistakable classic song “Linus and Lucy,” which was played live by pianist Steven Holtz during the members show and annual holiday party at the White Bear Center for Arts. The next evening I took some comfort when I spotted one of the student volunteers at the annual PJs with Santa event in Vadnais Angle of Heights wearing a shirt emblazoned with a drawing of Snoopy napping View on top of his elaborately decorated dog house. I was pleased to see that Paul Dols one of the holiday classics I fondly remember from my childhood still has the ability to connect with members of a younger generation.

While in grade school, I avidly followed and immersed myself in the work of Charles Schulz, practicing my drawing skills and saving allowance money to acquire books that contained extensive collections of his comic strips. Growing up, I felt a bond with these characters. Their nuanced personalities and the situations they encountered seemed to be written with an emotional core of humanity and truth even a little kid could recognize.

Observing and responding to my keen interest, my father acquired a print signed by Charles Schulz featuring the core group of characters. Charles Schulz grew up in St. Paul and my dad’s office at the time was just down the street from where Schulz’ father Carl had a barber shop. The fact that this print is now one of my prized possessions is because of a quirk of fate.

When I first got the print I proudly hung it over my bed in a frame. During a bout of what my mother termed “roughhousing” with my brother, a tossed shoe hit the frame and shattered the glass. Following a scolding, my mom cleaned up the broken shards of glass and took down the frame with the print. It was never displayed in my room again and was thought to be lost. It wasn’t until my parents were preparing for a move more than 20 years later that the print reemerged in mint condition inside a nondescript manila envelope with “Charlie Brown” written on the outside. In retrospect I wonder if it was a coincidence that it was misplaced, or if my mom knew the print would more than likely end up in tatters under the care of an eight-year-old boy.

It’s hard to believe now, more than 50 years later, that this iconic holiday special was controversial, but when the Charlie Brown Christmas was first scheduled for broadcast, the network television executives didn’t like it and were worried that it would be a ratings disaster.

With the choices of music, actual children doing the voices, no laugh track and the use of quotations from scripture, the program was unlike any animated special that had been previously produced.

Perhaps as a lesson in perseverance and following one’s convictions, Charles Schulz stood his ground about what were viewed at the time to be unusual creative choices and much to the surprise of the network executives, when the show first aired in 1965 it was a resounding success. It is now considered a holiday classic.

So, if you’re of a certain generation, or just discovering the enduring charm of some of the classic shows that your parents and grandparents enjoyed, you will likely recognize the following excerpt from the scripture delivered by the character Linus Van Pelt at the conclusion of the Charlie Brown Christmas special, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” Now, cue up “Linus and Lucy” and go ahead and dance, preferably in an expressive style reminiscent of your favorite cartoon character.

Speak up to prevent further harm

n addition to a lot of extra shopping and cooking, the holidays bring a flurry of social events, work parties and extended visits with family members. While it’s great to connect with old friends and new acquaintances, it’s also guaranteed that not everyone will get along, especially during a season that can bring as much stress as it does joy.

It can be hard to know what to do or say during those difficult moments.

Often we choose to let an awkward or unkind comment pass for the sake of group harmony. But when is a hard conversation worth having and when do you simply let a comment pass?

Movers & The answer isn’t always clear.

Arguing politics at the dinner table Shakers with your 96-year-old aunt probably Jerry Hromatka won’t change her mind and could spoil the meal for everyone. But remaining silent when a family member, neighbor or colleague makes an ignorant or hurtful comment aimed at yourself or others isn’t right either. Sometimes we have to speak up to prevent further harm.

Silence can be seen as complicity, says Jill Buckingham, director of Mental Health at Northeast Youth and Family Services. When a person’s comments cross an ethical line for you, there are ways to address the comment without escalating the situation. These techniques are the basis of nonviolent communication.

To effectively discuss a disagreement, Buckingham says that it’s very important to be aware of how you disagree. Meeting disrespect with disrespect makes a tense situation worse and decreases the likelihood that the person will listen to what you have to say.

getting curious. Saying something like, “That’s interesting to me. That’s not how I see it but I’d like to learn more about why you feel that way,” gives the person an opportunity to have a deeper conversation and can lead to a better understanding and deeper empathy between both parties. You may also have preconceived ideas about why they made that hurtful comment. They may have the same preconceptions about your beliefs. You may both be wrong.

Sometimes that deeper, more effective conversation happens right away. But often it doesn’t and you should accept that, too, Buckingham says. Connection and understanding take time and the person you are talking to might need to think about your words for awhile. Or they might be surprised that you pushed back against what they said or believe, or they may not be willing to have a conversation at all. However, practicing nonviolent communication techniques decreases the chance that they will dismiss your viewpoint and increases the likelihood that they will examine their own.

Regardless of the outcome of your hard conversation, you will know that you were true to yourself and at the same time respectful of the other person. And in this increasingly isolated and divisive age, you might just be setting an example that others can learn from.

Students, seniors benefit from Vadnais grants The Vadnais Heights Area Community Foundation (VHACF) has fi nalized grants to five different nonprofit organizations creating new opportunities in the Vadnais Heights area and providing help to neighbors.

“This round of grants focused on education and furthering the senior interests in our community, two things that need all of our attention,” stated VHACF Chair Jerry Moynagh. “Our goal as a foundation is to ensure that projects aimed at those areas of greatest need in our community are given a helping hand from our grants.”

On the education side, grants were

given to the Tubman organization to go into the Mounds View and White Bear Lake school districts to provide programming that will help students build healthy relationships and prevent violence and domestic abuse.

The Church of Pius X received a grant to help provide nutrition to students in the White Bear Lake school district who are experiencing food insecurity on the weekends when school breakfast/lunch is unavailable to them. BearPower also received a grant for projects in the White Bear Lake school district for nutritional programs, the farmers market and the 4K Walk/Run.

Senior programs received grants.

The Consortium of Lake Area Senior Services received funding for its 2020 programming to support coordination between more than 100 senior organizations, dementiafriendly community activities, and development and education to those serving seniors in the White Bear Lake area. The White Bear Senior Program also received a grant to help recruit and train volunteers, including holding a community volunteer fair for nonprofits and programs assisting seniors.

The VHACF is an endowment fund created by the citizens of Vadnais Heights to work with grant partners

and strengthen the local community.

Homegrown climate solutions for clean energy economy

At the recent Climate Reality Project training weekend in Minneapolis, Al Gore declared that the only way to change policies in time to solve the climate crisis is through grassroots pressure and initiatives. He added that “some damage has been made inevitable, but we still have time to avoid the worst.”

Minnesota’s “homegrown” solutions are the choices made by local governments, corporations and communities that have positioned the state in the forefront of cutting emissions to combat climate change. Minnesota has become a leader in wind and solar energy development.

Over two-thirds of the world’s people live in countries where solar and wind are the least-costly sources of electricity. Historically, Minnesota has been reliant on high-emissions coal, but solar and wind-generated power will soon be significantly cheaper than fossil-fuel electricity here as well. Such localized energy sources are vital, since fully 30% of a utility bill reflects the cost of transmitting energy long distances to end users.

The number of community solar projects, where customers purchase credits from a central solar source, is greater in Minnesota than in any other state. And solar installations have recently exploded—growing 20 times as fast in the past three years as in the past 40. More than 100 community solar gardens were established in 2018 alone. The price of solar energy in Minnesota has declined by 34% over the last five years.

Most Minnesota solar farms have commercial or industrial customers, as well as residential subscribers. Panels now appear on the roofs of retail, manufacturing and public works buildings.

Wind energy echoes the dynamics of solar: burgeoning capacity and shrinking cost.

Minnesota ranks third in the nation in windgenerated electricity, its capacity having increased by 27% over the last six years. Wind is currently the cheapest source of electricity generation in Minnesota. Its cost declined by 16% in 2018 alone.

Renewable fuels now generate 25% of MN’s electricity—an objective achieved seven years earlier than the original target date of 2025.

Gov. Tim Walz reiterated the statewide goal of obtaining 100% of its electricity from renewables

by 2050, and Mayors Jacob Frey (Minneapolis) and Melvin Carter (St. Paul) reported even more ambitious targets for their city operations.

The Paris Climate Accord of 2016 asks signernations to level off greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible and to become carbon-neutral no later than the second half of this century. In this agreement, the U.S. (the world’s largest emitter, historically) committed to reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions by 26 to 28 percent below 2005 levels by 2025.

Gore praised its achievements in cutting emissions as another “success story” for Minnesota. The state’s total emissions are now 12% lower than in 2005, and power sector emissions have dropped by 34% since then.

Current goals are to reduce overall emissions to 30% below 2005 levels by 2025, and 80% by 2050.

J. Drake Hamilton (Science Policy Director for MN’s Fresh Energy organization) reported that Xcel Energy is the fi rst company in the nation, to commit to zero-carbon energy (use of renewable fuels) exclusively by 2050. Xcel buys more wind

power than any other utility in the nation and aims to triple its solar capacity and to reduce emissions 80% by 2030.

Major Minnesota companies such as Target, Ecolab, General Mills and Cargill have begun transitioning to renewable fuels to power their operations. Thomas Friedman, New York Times columnist and St. Louis Park native who spoke at the training, praised such corporate and utility decisions. He argued that America would only become weaker by ignoring the climate crisis: “The most powerful economy will be the cleanest, greenest and most healthy.”

Sheriff’s office receives $20,000 grant for Shop with a Cop The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office hosted its annual holiday tradition of Shop with a Cop earlier this month.

This year, the sheriff’s office reached a historical level of support by receiving nearly $20,000 in private grants for Shop with a Cop, more than any year previously.

“Shop with a Cop this year is extra special,” said Sheriff Bob Fletcher.

“As a result of strong partnerships and private support, we have been able to increase the number of children and families included this holiday season.”

There were 74 youth who participated and shopped for more than 220 family members. Over 80 sheriff’s office employees and volunteers donated their time and talents to this event.

Locally and nationally, many law enforcement agencies participate in Shop with a Cop. The purpose of this event is to ensure children and families are able to enjoy the holidays as well as foster positive relationships.

“A lot of work happens behind the scenes to make this event special,” added Mike Hankee, a commander with the sheriff’s office and Shop with a Cop coordinator.

In Ramsey County, the sheriff’s office school resource officers (SROs) work closely with school social workers to select youth to participate in Shop with a Cop. Patrol deputies

also help select program participants. Once selected, SROs reach out to the families and coordinate the family’s involvement in the program.

Traditionally, youth selected are in kindergarten through eighth grade and are at-risk, are economically disadvantaged, or have endured some hardships during the year.

Once selected, youth are paired with sheriff’s office staff and then escorted to Target from a local church in a convoy of marked squad cars complete with lights and sirens.

While at Target, youth purchase gifts for family members. Parents/guardians provide the youth’s wish list in advance. Each child is provided an amount of money to spend on gifts depending on family size. After shopping, the children eat lunch, wrap gifts and continue to get to know the sheriff’s office staff and volunteers.

Funding for this program is provided through private grants. This year, private grant support totals $19,500 and includes $12,500 from Target and $7,000 from the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Foundation. Food is donated by McDonalds on Rice Street, Davanni’s in Arden Hills, Raising Cane’s Chicken, Subway and Cub Foods. Meeting space is provided by North Heights Lutheran Church.

Sheriff’s office launches body cameras in jail, courts The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office completed its second phase of implementation of body-worn cameras this month.

Earlier this year, patrol deputies began carrying body cameras. Body-worn cameras are now being utilized by correctional officers in the Adult Detention Center and deputy sheriffs in court security.

The use of body-worn cameras helps to provide an objective view of interactions between law enforcement agencies and community. “The sheriff’s office is now keeping pace with best practices utilized by law enforcement agencies across the state and country,” said Sheriff Bob Fletcher. “In the last 12 months, our office has worked hard to deliver on a promise to improve transparency, increase trust and promote accountability.”

The use of body-worn cameras aligns with the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing.

Ramsey County is now a leader in the state as one of a few counties to use body-worn cameras in a detention/correctional facility.

Since January, the sheriff’s office has been working to implement body-worn cameras in 2019.

Fletcher presented a revised timeline that called for their immediate implementation. After a series of community meetings, the county board approved funding of $1.38 million. Of that, $306,000 was approved for personnel costs and $1.08 million was approved for cameras, equipment and storage.

The sheriff’s office engaged citizens, community groups, union leaders and legal experts to achieve consensus on a policy that respects privacy, adheres to legal requirements and provides transparent access to information with the goal to further community trust. Six community meetings were held in locations across the county. Two public hearings were also held with the county board.

“This was a team effort and we very much appreciate the support of the county board,” added Fletcher. “The county board’s commitment to fund this program has made it possible and, as a result, we are more responsive to community expectations.” As of today, the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office is the state’s largest sheriff’s office to implement body-worn cameras.

• Theft by swindle was reported in the 5500 block of Schutta Road Dec. 4. A victim bought gift cards totaling $400 and gave the card info to an unknown person via phone claiming to be from Homeland Security. The thief referenced legal actions fi led on the victim’s Social Security number.

• A Zimmerman man was arrested on outstanding felony warrants from four counties in the 4100 block of Lexington Avenue N. Dec. 7. The arrestee stated he ingested narcotics prior to arrest and was transported to Regions.

‘How did I get here? I just started back behind the school bleachers’

Underage vaping is illegal and an addiction that can easily lead down an unintended path.

That’s what happened to Rey Khammavongsa when he started smoking marijuana in middle school. The choice took him down a path that led to no graduation and a young adult life in prison.

“Marijuana opened the door to new crowd,” Khammavongsa told a health class at Mahtomedi High School this month.

“I’m not here to tell you what to do,” said Khammavongsa, who works for Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge’s Know the Truth Prevention Program. He hopes his story will speak for itself.

He said addiction can happen to anyone who begins to make those fi rst, seemingly innocent bad choices. He came from a good family — his mom was a teacher and his dad a business owner.

But when he became addicted to harder drugs, he developed a $200/day habit he needed to feed.

This led to a life of crime — he participated in armed robberies and home invasions in order to buy drugs. Even though he is now sober after going through Teen Challenge’s long-term treatment program, there are many things he cannot do because he has felonies on his record.

He can’t travel out of the country and he can’t hunt, something he loved to do with his dad while he was growing up. It’s also difficult to fi nd a job.

alcohol as a youth are not as innocent as they seem. Once Struyk took marijuana that he didn’t know was laced with a hard drug and he had to be hospitalized. Marijuana was the fi rst drug that got him into legal trouble at age 18. The DUI and drug possession charges on his record don’t specify what drug it was, and the charges affected his ability to obtain work.

Vaping can also lead to a life of addiction.

“Nicotine is so addictive,” Struyk said. It is also harmful to the body and brain development.

Vaping chemicals have been shown to cause health issues. There are legal ramifications for minors who are found in possession of vapes.

The vaping industry has been clearly marketing to minors in a quest to make money, he added.

“They are not different than a drug dealer,” he said.

More than 40 percent of high school students have reported that they’ve tried vaping before, a number that has been steadily increasing over the years, according to Teen Challenge.

Alcohol is the second most deadly drug after nicotine and tobacco. “It’s socially acceptable, but the reality is there are legal, physical and emotional consequences,” Struyk said. It is a “gateway drug” that takes away your ability to control your mind and body and make good decisions, he explained. Again, marketing lies that alcohol will enhance your life experience.

“In reality, you fi ght with your best friend or are sick,” he said.

has had three friends die from counterfeit pills.

“They are dangerous if misused or abused,” he said. If you are found in possession of a prescription pill that was not prescribed to you, you can be charged with a narcotics violation.

“There are a lot of things you can’t control in life,” Struyk told the class. “But you can choose ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to drugs.”

Struyk said he wished he realized when he was younger that not as many youth were probably using as he thought. He was just in the wrong crowd. According to the Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge Know the Truth Student Survey, about 78% of today’s Minnesota youth choose not to use drugs.

However, that means almost one-fourth of students do. Struyk is concerned for those students. If you can’t go more than four days without a substance, it means you are probably addicted and should get help, he said.

Know the Truth presenters will speak at more than 160 high schools throughout the state this year. The program has been educating students on substance use for a decade; its representatives have been visiting Corey Ratzloff’s Mahtomedi High School health class for just as long.

“I just started back behind the school bleachers,” Khammavongsa remembered. “You all have to make a choice,” he told the class.

“Think of me when you make a choice.”

Khammavongsa’s co-worker Mike Struyk had a similar story: he started on weed in middle school. This led to about two decades of addiction, during which he lived in a tent as a homeless person and committed crimes to feed his hard drug habits. Once he almost died, but was revived by Narcan. He hit rock bottom when he was kicked out of a treatment center in the middle of the winter and found himself homeless.

“I wondered, ‘How did I get here?’” he said. “I was in a class like this and I thought the person (presenting about drug addiction) was a loser.” He realized he had become that person.

But now he has been sober for two years after the long-term treatment program at Teen Challenge. He said he doesn’t visit school classes to tell youth what to do, but offers a few pieces of advice to avoid the devastation of addiction: Have the courage to ask for help, choose friends wisely and be fi rm with your “no.”

“You have to be fi rm with your ‘no’ or people will push you,” he explained. “When you are fi rm with your ‘no,’ it puts up a healthy boundary.”

Hunters choose copper ammo to prevent wildlife death

For many Minnesota families, the holidays and hunting season go hand in hand. Since venison was the main course at that historic Thanksgiving centuries ago, it seems appropriate that Americans still celebrate and give thanks by harvesting wild game to feed their friends and families.

However, the choices that hunters make can have a big impact on the natural settings in which they spend their time during the hunting season. Lately, there has been a lot of conversation about the harmful effects of lead ammunition.

Hunters recover the meat they intend to eat from their game, and the inedible parts—the entrails— are usually left behind and consumed by scavengers such as coyotes, ravens and eagles. However, if the hunter is using ammunition that contains lead, this toxic metal can slowly poison the animals that feed on the leftover organs.

Minnesotans saw it happen recently with a golden eagle rescued by the University of Minnesota Raptor Center. This type of eagle is uncommon in Minnesota, and those who manage to see one are lucky. However, when this eagle was tested, it was shown to be suffering from lead toxicity. An X-ray showed the animal had ingested eight lead pellets. Raptor Center Director Julia Ponder told KARE 11 News that the neurological damage caused by lead was so severe “that the brain is basically Swiss cheese” at those levels of toxicity.

continues to be a problem for Minnesota ecosystems. Lead has been a big conversation in Minnesota recently, since the DNR denied a petition from environmental groups to ban lead in early November.

As the debate goes on about whether lead should be legally banned, many hunters recognize the impacts lead can have on the environment, and are choosing to make the switch to non-toxic ammunition anyway. For them, the removal of damage to the environment is worth the slightly higher cost of lead ammunition.

Some hunters balk at the higher expense of copper ammunition.

It also might not be commonly available from local outdoor sports stores, and sometimes has to be specially ordered online.

Other hunters say that copper ammunition performs differently than lead. It’s true that copper is lighter than lead and might not have exactly the same velocity of a lead round. However, in some ways, copper can perform better—it is harder than lead and less likely

to fragment and travel into the muscle and organs. In comparison, lead fragments could travel into the meat, affecting not only the organs eaten by wildlife but also the venison enjoyed by people.

Recently, some sporting good companies and natural resource organizations have started hosting copper ammunition demonstration

days at the gun range to let people try it out for themselves.

During this holiday season, one way for local hunters to express their appreciation of nature’s wild bounty might be making the change to non-toxic ammunition this year.

Gymnasts win invitational

The Mounds View cross country team, making its second straight trip to the Nike Nationals, fi nished 19th of 22 teams Dec. 7, competing against the nation’s elite prep runners in Eugene, Oregon, where Nike is based.

The Mustangs, coached by Ross Fleming, were both state champions and Nike Regionals champions, the latter qualifying them for nationals, where they fi nished 17th a year ago.

Nike nationals is regarded as a runner’s paradise. Competition to qualify for one of the 22 slots is fierce. The qualifying teams are all flown to Oregon, presented with top-notch apparel and equipment, given meals and hotel lodging, all at Nike’s expense, and mix with many of the country’s top distance runners and coaches.

Alec Nelson led the Mustangs in Eugene, placing 99th of 203 runners in 16:17. This was the fi rst time that Finn Sokolowski did not lead the team as he placed 106th in 16:21. Elliott McArthur was 123rd (16:30), Will Sacay 162nd (16:51), Matt Miller 168th (16:57), Santina Preciado 184th (17:09) and Nathan Apostle 198th (17:25).

Coach Ross Fleming announced that team awards went to the following — Sokolowski (most valuable), Nelson (most courageous), Sacay (most dedicated), John Phenning (coach’s award), Ezra Gaim (rookie of the year), and Preciado and Charlie Brody (most improved). Next year’s captains will be Miller and Brody.

Scoring were Ava Bullert, Lauren Ballinger, Lauren McAlpine twice, and Laura Arfstrom, in that order. Top two season scorers are Arfstrom (five goals, three assists) and Ballinger (four goals, two assists).

The Mounds View/Irondale (MVI) gymnastics team, newly paired this year, won the White Bear Lake Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 7.

Mounds View tallied 135.9 points, White Bear Lake 134.60, Chisago Lakes 131.1, Park 124.05, Centennial 121.05, St. Louis Park 119.2 and Tartan 115.35.

Mounds View’s Julia Clark placed second all-around with 32.45, and Amber Pietruszewski placed fourth with 32.30. Clark was recognized recently by the Star Tribune as one of the top 20 gymnasts in the metro area.

On vault, Beth Whalen tied for third with 9.0, Pietruszewski and Clark tied for fi fth with 8.85, and Carly Brazille was sixth with 8.6. Clark took second on uneven bars with 9.2 and Ella Cisneros tied for fourth with 8.40. On balance beam, Pietruszewski placed third with 8.3 and Clark fi fth with 8.25.

On floor exercise, Clark was second with 9.4.

MVI has also won dual meets over Stillwater 135.475 to 130.525, and Woodbury 139.575 to 126.3. Event leaders against Woodbury were Clark (floor and bars), Pietruszewski (beam), and Whalen (vault).

Dylan Wheeler Mounds View Basketball Dylan Wheeler, sophomore 6-1 point guard, is averaging 12.6 points for the unbeaten Mounds View basketball team, leading a very balanced team that has five players in double digits. He led with 12 points as the Mustangs (6-0) edged Roseville Area 5549 on Tuesday, Dec. 17. As a freshman last year, Wheeler led the Mustangs with 13.5 points per game in an 8-19 season.

Expand living spaces with clever ideas Homeowners looking to add more space to their homes do not necessarily need to make major renovations. They simply have to see the possibilities in outdoor living spaces.

Outdoor living spaces are coveted niches in a home. The American Home Furnishings Alliance says more than 70 percent of American households have outdoor living spaces, and nearly 70 percent of people use these spaces at least once per week in-season. Furthermore, homeowners are increasingly interested in enhancing these spaces to make them more usable and comfortable.

A recent survey from the online home design and remodeling resource Houzz found that more than 4,500 users were planning a landscape update. In addition, 56 percent of homeowners surveyed were making updates to improve their yards for entertaining.

While the creation of outdoor living spaces can cost thousands of dollars depending on the renovation, homeowners have more budgetfriendly options at their disposal as well. The following are some ways to create inviting spaces

no matter how much square-footage is present.

Revamp a garage or shed Rather than turning a storage area into a catch-all for items time forgot, clean out the space and put it to better use. and hang lightweight mesh or another translucent material that obscures neighborsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; views without blocking out natural light. Invest in outdoor sofas and chaises to create an outdoor living room right on the porch. If your budget allows, consider closing in the porch as a true

three-season room so it can be used throughout fall, spring and summer.

Blue Christmas: In 2nd book, author shares lessons learned from loss

It's been 13 years, but David Francis still vividly remembers the fi rst Christmas he spent after the death of his only son, Jon. “It was horrible,” he said. “I dreaded hearing people saying ‘Merry Christmas.’”

For the Francis family, that holiday season was marked by the tremendous pain of Jon's absence and the lack of closure around it. That summer, 24-year-old Jon went missing while mountain climbing in Idaho, and his body had not yet been found.

Jon, who grew up in Stillwater, was an accomplished athlete, an outdoor enthusiast and a soon-to-be seminary student. After college, he moved to Utah to take a job as a youth minister, and he spent his summers working as a counselor at Luther Heights Bible Camp in Idaho. It was there, David said, where Jon “fell in love with the mountains.”

Though he was an experienced outdoorsman and accustomed to traversing the slopes of Idaho's Sawtooth Mountains, Jon went missing during a solo climb up the Grand Mogul in July 2006. David and his wife, Linda, flew to Idaho almost immediately after receiving the news, but to their disappointment, law enforcement gave up the search for Jon after only two days.

“They told us, 'Give your son up to the mountains,'” David remembered.

But he and Linda refused to do so, and instead committed to funding and organizing what became a yearlong search for Jon's body. In July 2007, a little over a year after he went missing, Jon's remains were finally discovered on the mountain.

In 2010, David published “Bringing Jon Home,” an award-winning memoir that chronicles his family's search for Jon. This year, he published his second book, “Grief Travelers,” through the Jon Francis Foundation, a nonprofit he and Linda founded to support the families of people missing in the wilderness.

learned through mourning the loss of his beloved son. A former U.S. Navy captain, he attributes the impetus for the book partly to his many years of military service.

“That's a military habit — lessons learned,” he said. “These are lessons learned, what I have learned about grief and loss, what I have learned during my travel through the Valley of Grief.”

The timing of the book's release couldn't be more perfect. As David knows all too well, the holiday season often proves lonely for those coping with loss. Mourning, he said, is an already difficult journey made all the more so when the rest of the world seems to be joyfully celebrating.

“When grief is fresh and raw, you don't want Christmas to arrive,” he said. “You don't want to see people in holiday cheer when you're deep in sorrow.”

He hopes that “Grief Travelers” will serve as a guide to his fellow grief travelers, particularly during this time of year. Among the lessons he shares is to channel one's love for a lost loved one into others.

“One of the emotional coping mechanisms of dealing with grief is

to reinvest your love,” he said. “The love that I had for Jon, it's important to reinvest that love.” David's 10-yearold granddaughter Camille, to whom “Grief Travelers” is dedicated, is “getting the bulk of that love,” he said.

He also said that healthy grieving will eventually allow joy to make its way back in, and he encourages his fellow grief travelers to welcome it when it arrives.

“Joy starts creeping in. You can fight it, but it happens … You slowly stop thinking about what you've lost and instead think about what you had. You start to replace grief with gratitude,” he said. “Not all of it— some of it will always be there, but over time, gratitude starts creeping in and replacing some of the grief.”

David also said that Camille's enthusiasm for the Christmas season is infectious and has helped him rediscover the excitement of the season.

“She still believes in Santa Claus, and in her mind, there's still the magic of Christmas,” David said.

“And that magic overflows to me.”

The levy, which passed with 61% of the vote, will provide an additional $12.7 million to the district. The revenue will support efforts to provide mental health resources to students, upgrade building security and expand the district’s career pathway programs.

Residents were able to weigh in on the levy during the truth in taxation hearing, held prior to the regular board meeting. Carole Nielsen, executive director of administrative services, explained that the individual impact for property owners will vary but that residents can expect to pay an additional $263 to $512 to the district over the next year.

“That’s a rough estimate, based on the median value home,” Nielsen said.

Now that the board has formally certified the levy, the fi nal certification will be forwarded

to Ramsey County. The county will process the property tax statements to mail to taxpayers in March. The revenue will be available to the district for the 2020-21 school year.

Dec. 10 also marked the last meeting for longtime school board member Bob Helgeson.

Helgeson, who is retiring from his position on the school board after 16 years, opted not to run for a fi fth term in November.

The board ended the meeting by formally recognizing Helgeson for his years of service.

“It’s really a tremendous amount of service that you’ve given to this district and this community,” said Board Chair Jonathan Weinhagen. “The perspective that you brought every single day to this work as an educator, as a parent, as a member of this community — it made us all better. It made the work better.”

Helgeson closed by thanking the community for its support.

“I’m very, very thankful to live in a community that values and supports public education. I think that public education is a real measure of our commitment to a democracy and the values that our country’s all about,” Helgeson said. “I’ve been

truly lucky to have been entrusted this position, a position that has afforded me with the view of the best of people.”

In other actions, the board: • Heard an update on construction progress from representatives from Kraus-Anderson Construction and Wold Architects and Engineers.

• Approved the proposed contract between the district and the Nutrition Services Association.

The contract will run through 2021.

• Approved a resolution to keep enrollment options for students who do not live in the district closed for the 2021-22 school year.

• Accepted gifts from the Mounds View Education Foundation, Atonement Lutheran Church, the Wallace Family Foundation, the St. Phillip’s Church Knitters and Crocheters, as well as from several individuals.

The board next meets during its work session on Thursday, Jan. 9, at 6 p.m. The next regular meeting is Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m. Both take place at the Mounds View District Center, 4570 N. Victoria St., Shoreview.

New senior pastor at Incarnation for Christmas Incarnation Lutheran Church in Shoreview will celebrate its fi rst Christmas with new Senior Pastor Kai Nilsen. The theme for Advent and Christmas, “A Season of Blessing,” is based on the expansiveness of God’s love, a central focus of Kai’s teaching.

Following a oneyear national search, Incarnation’s call committee recommended Pastor Nilsen to the congregation as a gifted preacher and leader.

In an overwhelmingly affi rmative vote, Nilsen was called from Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus, Ohio, to succeed Pastor Gary Medin, who retired in 2018.

Tumble Fun Bus helps children increase skills

The Tumble Fun Bus is not your average school bus. If you see the bright lime green bus rolling around town, chances are that somewhere in the metro, children are about to have some fun.

Lexington resident Shannon Shepardson, originally from North Dakota, has owned Tumble Fun Bus for 10 years. Shepardson has a master's degree in education and taught at the elementary and middle school levels for 18 years. She also coached gymnastics for 10 years.

Shepardson had a friend in Nevada who owned a similar business. She was inspired to start Tumble Fun Bus years later in Minnesota. “It's the perfect marriage of the two (education and gymnastics),” she said.

“This is a great way to keep kids physically active.

It is such a great foundation for their balance, strength, their confidence.”

The walls and floors are padded for safety, and equipment includes a small gymnastics bar, padded beam, mini springboard, vault, rings, mountain climb, monkey bars, zip line, ball pit and more. The heated/air-conditioned bus rolls all over the metro year-round. “Every day it's a different place,” Shepardson said.

The bus typically does 30-minute visits, sometimes longer, at home day cares, day care centers, preschools and Montessori schools, as well as at special events, field trips and parties.

The visits can be yearly, monthly, every other week or even weekly.

“This is a great way to keep kids physically active,” Shepardson explained. “It is such a great foundation for their balance, strength, their confidence.”

At the end of the day, Shepardson said, she gets just as much joy out of seeing a child accomplish a skill as much as the child does.
