Over $80,000 raised for Mounds View schools More than 300 parents, district staff, community leaders and volunteers were rockin’ earlier this month at the Mounds View Schools Education Foundation’s (MVSEF) Rock the School House fundraiser, raising more than $ 80,000.

“Our eighth annual event was an unqualified success,” said Erik Rasmussen, chairman of the MVSEF Board of Trustees. “The energy in the room was high, coming off of the passing of the levy, and supporters demonstrated their belief in the district and our mission by stepping up in a meaningful way.”

The trip to wine country in partnership with Grand Tours Inc. returned for a second year. New to the auction were a private whiskey tasting, two private wine tastings and an intimate in-home concert donated by national recording artist and district parent Sarah Morris, who also provided the evening’s entertainment.

Morris kicked off the night’s program, followed by Rasmussen, who thanked community leaders and sponsors for their support. Rob Reetz, principal of Edgewood Middle School, introduced the foundation’s video. His strong message of support for Mounds View students ignited an inspirational fi re within the room. The video featured the stories of alumni who reflected on how impactful their Mounds View experience was for them.

SCHOOL BOARD NOTES The Mounds View Public Schools Board took the following action at its Nov. 12 meeting: • Heard an audit report. A representative from the audit fi rm Malloy, Montague, Karnowski, Radosevich & Co. P.A. reviewed the 2018-2019 audited financial statements and supplemental reports.

During the presentation to the board, the representative commended the district for its excellence in financial reporting and issued the highest level of audit reporting an auditor can give an organization.

• Heard a quarterly budget report and approved amendments. Carole Nielsen, executive director of administrative services, and Bridget Peterson, director of finance, provided revenue and expenditure reports for all funds for the fi rst quarter ending Sept. 30. By fund, total revenue and expenditures are under budget for this reporting period. Revenues for the current year exceed last year at this time, which is a result of timing. Each quarterly budget update provides

• Canvassed votes and issued certificates of election for the levy referendum and school board candidates. The board officially canvassed the results of the general election held on Nov. 5 and approved the abstract of votes cast.

Voters approved the district’s levy request by a margin of 61 percent in favor to 39 percent opposed. A total of 8,820 residents supported the proposal, while 5,684 opposed the request. The board also authorized issuance of certificates of election to board candidates Heidi Danielson, Jim DeMay, Sandra Westerman and Jonathan Weinhagen.

• Denied a Step 3 grievance fi led by a paraprofessional employee.

The grievance was heard by the school board grievance committee on Oct. 31, which recommended that the grievance be denied.

• Discussed naming the pool at Chippewa Middle School after retired Mounds View educator and longtime swim coach Jim Brobin.

Per Policy 5150, a committee was formed to consider a request to name the Chippewa Middle School pool after him. Based on the information provided with the application, the committee felt the request to name the pool after coach Brobin met the district’s naming considerations. In response, the administration recommended that the board move forward to name the Chippewa pool after coach Brobin. Regulation states that there be two opportunities for the public to speak on behalf of this topic. The fi rst opportunity was provided at the meeting, and the second will be at the Dec. 10 board meeting. The board also decided to re-examine the policy to determine if they want to continue the practice of naming district facilities in the future.

Mounds View High School’s business management class is embarking on a project to raise $10,000 to support Can Do Canines, a nonprofit organization that gives people with disabilities the opportunity to have a service dog. The event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 8 at the DoubleTree by Hilton, 511 SE Huron Blvd, Minneapolis. Tickets are $60 for an individual, $400 for a table of eight and $220 for a half table of four.

The event will include a dinner (Italian buffet), keynote speaker, silent auction and more. All proceeds will go to Can Do Canines. To purchase tickets go to forms.gle/rDAVJitF34rXanGh9.

Mounds View Managers for Service Canines (MVMSC) is a student-led project that culminates in a fundraising event while fulfi lling the requirements for the business management class at Mounds View High School. The instructor guides students through a semester-long service learning project chosen by the students. The class consists of 29 students.

2019 Citizen of the Year, Caring Youth named Tim Pratt is the 2019 Shoreview Citizen of the Year.

Mayor Sandy Martin and the City Council presented Pratt with the award at the annual volunteer appreciation event this month. He has served on the Environmental Quality Committee (EQC) since 2004 and is a leading advocate for protecting and improving the environment.

As the chair of the EQC, Pratt has helped advance successful programs such as the speaker series and green community awards.

Pratt is also an avid runner and has raised more than $11,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. When asked what he’d like to say to those who are thinking of volunteering, Pratt offered this piece of advice: “Find what you’re passionate about and what brings you joy, then find an opportunity and start there.”

The Shoreview City Council awarded Tim Pratt with the 2019 Citizen of the Year award earlier this month.

Make holidays a little brighter

Northeast Youth and Family Services and the Arden Hills/Shoreview Rotary Club invite the public to send in nominations for the Service to Youth Award by Friday, Dec. 6. Nominees must have recently provided a volunteer service or activity for youth that is above and beyond their employment responsibilities or have provided exceptional service within the scope of their job duties. Recipients will be chosen from five award categories: law enforcement, educator, community volunteer, elected official and youth (age 12-21). The Ralph Reeder Food Shelf is accepting donations for Christmas meals and toys and gifts. Holiday concert by Shoreview Northern Lights Variety Band Celebrate 25 Years of Holiday Memories with the Shoreview Northern Lights Variety Band at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, in the Benson Great Hall on the campus of Bethel University. It’s an evening full of a variety of fun, festive and majestic music with special guests the Minnesota Boychoir and organist Thomas Ferry. The concert features the premier performance of a symphonic band composition written to commemorate a fi rst visit to Minnesota in April 2019. After experiencing the historic charm and beauty of the St. Croix River Valley, Kelijah Dunton, winner of the band’s 2019 composition competition, composed “Stillwater” while on the airplane traveling back home to New York City. Charitable CD stocking stuffer idea A holiday CD that contains 10 years of greatest hits from area artists is on sale at Kowalski’s Markets. The charitable album, “A Minnesota Holiday Vol. 11 — Greatest Hits (2009-2019)” has tracks from Redpath, as well as other White Bear Lake favorites like Jennifer Grimm, Peter Mayer, GB Leighton and Sara Renner. Department of health receives funding U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minnesota) announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) a grant of $3.3 million to address safety hazards and health concerns, including lead paint. In September, Klobuchar sent a letter in support of the MDH’s application for funding through the Lead Hazard Reduction Grant Program.

The North Suburban Kiwanis Golden K Club has announced its December lineup of speakers.

Time to reflect

AKING TIME TO reflect on life is a worthy process that should be exercised regularly.

We are busy raising families, discovering or enhancing our career paths, caring for our personal health and that of our junior, as well as our senior family members. Life goes by faster and faster as we age.

Once a year at our national Thanksgiving holiday, we pause to give thanks for life’s favors. We try once a year to gather everyone at the table and have each individual tell what they are thankful for.

I remember a time in our Sunday school gathering when the late Jon Barber, a former Mounds View High School physics teacher, was asked this question. His quick answer was “gravity.” He was very popular with his school students.

Looking back at growing up on Otter Lake Road in White Bear Township, I remember a small framed quote that hung on the wall in the living room. It read, “Pray without ceasing.” As a young person, I didn’t understand how one could pray continuously.

Now at age 83, I find myself giving thanks many times throughout the day. I’m thankful for my wife, children, their spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The gratitude continues for friendships, our community, church and organizations that help so many people.

I’m thankful for the community weekly newspaper career with a wonderful staff that cares about honest information and defense of the First Amendment, the heart of our democracy. The First Amendment states: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

Will you take time to reflect on all the favors you have received? Sharing them with others around the Thanksgiving table is a good way to acknowledge them.

Cinderella is coming for Thanksgiving

I

try not to mess with my family’s Thanksgiving dinner. We make the same things every year: slow-roasted turkey with Grandpa’s famous stuffing, creamy mashed potatoes, sweet baked yams, my mom’s green bean casserole, and my corn soufflé. If I tried to change anything my family would fi re me, if they could. The only thing I’m able to change is dessert. I like pumpkin pie, but it’s fun to change things up.

Last year, right before Thanksgiving, I was traveling through Switzerland and I stopped at a roadside rest for gas (Roadside rests are like little gourmet restaurants that serve espressos, wine, fancy desserts, and cheese). Outside an older gentleman was roasting chestnuts over an open fi re—I’m serious. Inside, people were sitting at tiny tables eating something that was a brilliant orange color. It was like a picture out of a travel magazine.

It’s hard to describe the brilliant orange color, but it was “really” orange. In broken French, I asked what it was, and the storeowner led me to a pumpkin sitting on a cart and told me the dessert was tarte à la citrouille. My dream pumpkin was a lime green-greyish color on the outside. She assured me it was bright orange inside. The only disappointing part of the experience was not being able to bring a pumpkin home on the airplane.

Lucky for me (and now you), the shop owner shared her recipe with me. If you are not able to fi nd pumpkins with bright colored flesh you can use buttercup squash or canned pumpkin.

Pumpkin Tart 1 frozen puff pastry sheet, thawed 1 large egg, lightly beaten 1 small pumpkin with bright orange flesh, or one 15-oz. can 100% pumpkin

3 large eggs 2/3 cup sugar 1/4 tsp.salt 1/2 cup heavy cream 2 Tbsp. bourbon Lightly sweetened whipped cream for garnish (optional)

foil and place the pumpkin pieces flesh side up.

Cover with more foil and bake for 1 hour or until the pumpkin is soft. Cool and scoop out the flesh and mash or pulse with a food processor, until smooth. Set aside.

Roll out the puff pastry on a clean, lightly floured surface. Transfer dough to a round 9-inch tart pan with fluted sides or a 9x13 pan. Lightly press the dough into the bottom of the pan and along the sides. Trim to fit and freeze for at least 15 minutes.

Measure 2 cups of the cooked pumpkin and reserve the remaining pumpkin for another use.

In a large bowl, add the eggs, one at a time, to the pumpkin, until thoroughly incorporated. Add the sugar and salt. Whisk in the heavy cream and bourbon.

Pour the pumpkin mixture into the frozen unbaked tart crust. Bake until the top is just set; about 30-45minutes. Let the tart cool before serving.

Serve at room temperature with lightly sweetened whipped cream. Refrigerate any unused portion. **These pumpkins can be grown here. See your favorite seed catalog or check local farmers markets next fall.

Safe Harbor Program succeeds in supporting at-risk youth An evaluation of the state’s Safe Harbor Program has found that most at-risk and sexually exploited youth in the program reported feeling more hopeful and better prepared for the future.

Wilder Research completed its third evaluation of Minnesota’s Safe Harbor program, a multiagency statewide initiative designed to meet the needs of sex-trafficked and exploited young people through age 24 using a public health, public safety, human services and human rights approach. Program funds allow agencies and grantees to provide supportive services, housing and shelter, and to deliver training, coordinate across disciplines, and conduct outreach.

Between April 2017 and March 2019, Safe Harbor grantees served 1,279 youth and young adults, including 977 new clients. The last evaluation published in November 2017 found that from April 2015 to June 2017, Safe Harbor grantees provided services to 1,423 people.

“It’s encouraging to see the positive impact of Minnesota’s Safe Harbor approach as we all work to address the serious problem of sexual exploitation,” Minnesota Commissioner of Health

Jan Malcolm said. “Our public health model is focused on giving young people the tools they need — housing, education and support from trusted adults — to rebuild their lives after sex trafficking. We need to build on this success and make sure we reach all exploited youth where they are at in their schools and communities.”

The average age of participants served under Safe Harbor was 17. A slightly higher percentage of youth served were in greater Minnesota (54%) compared to the metro area (46%). Most participants were female (91%), while 6% identified as male and 3% as transgender, gendernonconforming and other. More than half (59%) of participants were people of color.

The evaluation showed 97% of youth interviewees noted a positive change after accessing Safe Harbor services, and 88% noted a positive change in their situation. Almost all (94%) respondents felt more hopeful after receiving services, and 100% felt more prepared to reach educational goals. In addition, 94% said they would seek help from police if they felt unsafe, while 89% felt more prepared to support

themselves fi nancially in a safe way.

The evaluation also found that Safe Harbor could be even more effective by decreasing service and training gaps and addressing systemic challenges.

Additional needs include housing, mental health, long-term services, rural services, culturally specific services and services for victims/ survivors over age 24.

“No young person should have to face the trauma of sexual exploitation,” said Human Services Commissioner Jodi Harpstead. “It’s up to us to make sure the right supports are in place to help them as they recover so they can go on to lead full, healthy lives. This evaluation shows that the right interventions make all of the difference.”

DNR denies petition to ban lead ammo, tackle Environmental and conservation groups petitioned the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) earlier this fall requesting the agency initiate rulemaking to ban lead. The petition asked three things: • Ban possession and use of lead or other toxic fi shing tackle on Minnesota waters located within the common loon range; • Prohibit taking of wild animals within Minnesota while possessing or using bullets containing lead or other toxic materials; and • Prohibit taking of wild animals within Minnesota with shotshells other than those loaded with steel

shot, copper-plated shot, nickelplated shot, zinc-plated steel shot or shot made of other nontoxic materials approved by the director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

After careful consideration of the petition and review of more than 20 years of data and stakeholder input related to this subject, the DNR issued a decision Nov. 4 denying the petition.

The DNR based its decision on multiple factors, which are detailed in a Decision and Findings of Fact document available at mndnr.gov/ hunting/ammo/nts.html. These factors included limitations in the DNR’s rulemaking authority, the

petition’s lack of data concerning the impact of the proposed rule, the lack of demonstrated broad stakeholder support and the DNR’s conclusion that potential restrictions on the use of lead ammunition and tackle should be considered by the Minnesota Legislature.

Consistent with the approach taken in most other states that have imposed restrictions on lead ammunition and tackle, the DNR believes the use of lead ammunition and tackle is best addressed by the Minnesota Legislature. A decision of this magnitude must involve engagement with the full range of

stakeholders that could be affected by the decision.

While the DNR has denied the petition for rulemaking, the agency believes the human health and environmental impacts of lead ammunition and tackle do warrant further study and discussion. The DNR is committed to working with the petitioners, legislators, tribal governments, hunters and anglers to facilitate a more inclusive conversation on the possibility of future restrictions on the use of lead and other toxic ammunition and tackle.

Hugo resident grants yard access for snowmobilers

HUGO — Thanks to the generosity of a local resident, a dreaded stretch of road for snowmobilers will be safer this winter.

Richard Houde and his wife Marylou have lived in their home on 137th Street N. since 1976. The two have agreed to grant snowmobilers access to 880 feet of their front yard, the equivalent of 2 1/2 football fields.

seen a lot of mishaps, people getting stuck. It is a bad situation on this road; I see too many accidents. If you are not paying attention and you are stuck on a snowmobile on the side of the road and you have got your back to that car, you are liable not to be here,” Richard said. “We don’t use that area much over there, and I was thinking if we can get them off the road, avoid that high embankment and just go around through there, that would be okay with me.”

The Houdes’ property is located across from 137th Street Court N. and right before the curve where 137th Street turns into Homestead Avenue N. Hugo Snowmobile Club President John Udstuen said that the newly granted access is a big deal.

“For seven years we have been making small improvements to our snowmobile trail that follows the ditch on the south side. Every year we cut down some trees, we try to push the trail deeper in the ditch, but that corner has been a massive nightmare for us,” Udstuen explained. “It is virtually going to solve more than 90% of our problems. (That area) has been a seven-year thorn in my side.

I am all about making things safer for snowmobiles, and I’ve never liked that area. We have gotten stuck with the groomer, snowmobilers get stuck all the time, so this is huge.”

Udstuen said the reason the area is so dangerous is a combination of the steep incline in the ditch and the overgrown trees and brush that force snowmobilers to ride on the narrow road right before the blind corner.

Around 15 members of the snowmobile club spent Nov. 2 cutting through a forest of brush and trees on Richard’s property to create a beautiful trail that snowmobilers will be able to use this winter. Richard said he is also okay with hikers utilizing the trail in the warmer months.

“Mr. Humble” is the nickname Udstuen has given to Richard. “You don’t meet a lot of people like him,” Udstuen said. “These homeowners are going above and beyond the call of duty. We go through farm fields all the time. I have got 11 different people in Hugo that I have permission slips for (granting snowmobilers access), but most of those are farm fields.”

Although Richard is not a snowmobiler himself, he said both of his sons enjoy riding and he enjoys watching the snowmobiles go by in the winter — that is, when they don’t get stuck.

To commemorate Richard’s generosity, Udstuen said a couple of signs will be installed along the trail recognizing him for the access. Richard’s response was, “They are not going to have my name on it.”

Stenstrom had a Mustang season for the ages at QB

Cole Stenstrom, Mounds View quarterback, turned in one of the best seasons a Mustang football player ever had this fall, capping an impressive three-year tenure at the position.

“Cole has all the physical tools. What has taken him to being one of the all-time Mustang greats is his growth from the neck up,” said Aaron Moberg, who’s been head coach for three years, all with Stenstrom as his field general.

Stenstrom passed for 4,036 yards and 35 touchdowns in his career. His TD total is a close third behind two Mustang luminaries, Adam Weber (38) and Don Eustice (36). His yardage is second behind Weber (4,779) and passed Eustice (3,128). His 2,135 yards this year broke Eustice’s single-season record of 1,996 set in 1999.

After becoming the varsity starter the second game of his sophomore year, he

stayed there for 29 games, never missing one.

“My whole career has been a blast,” Stenstrom said.

“The whole community gets behind us. I think a good football season sets the tone for the school year.”

The Mustangs were 3-6 his sophomore year when he passed for 745 yards and seven touchdowns.

They turned the corner at 6-4 his junior year when he completed 104 of 187 passes for 1,156 yards and 10 touchdowns, with 10 interceptions.

This fall, Stenstrom led the Mustangs to an 8-3 season. He passed for 18 touchdowns and ran for nine, while completing 125 of 241 for 2,135 yards with just seven intercepted. He had great protection from the line most of the time and a talented fleet of receivers in Jeff Roeber, Colin Hoyhtya, Mason Dean, Tate Lahr and Brian Tebbutt.

Most memorable games were a 41-40 loss to East Ridge when he was 23-for-31

for 329 yards and two TD’s while rushing for two, and a 48-16 playoff win over Buffalo (and its Iowa State-bound QB Aidan Bowman) when he went 14-for-24 for 253 yards and three TD’s and ran for two more.

“This year, with our team winning the section,” Stenstrom said, asked what his career highlight was, referring to wins over Burnsville (34-0) and Buffalo to place fi rst in their quad of the Class 6A playoffs. “That was our main goal this year, to raise our banner on the fence by the scoreboard.

Coach talked to us about creating a legacy.”

Moberg, amplifying on Stenstrom’s growth as a QB, said, “His response factor is awesome. If something goes wrong, he has the ability to quickly respond in the right way and control what he can control. We changed our offense prior to the season, and there was a lot we put on Cole’s plate.”

Stenstrom’s lively arm and fleet feet are keys to

his success, but, more than that, Stenstrom said, quarterbacking is about “spatial awareness” and “mostly mental.” He elaborated: “Watching lots of fi lm, understanding the different (defensive) coverages.” When he views NFL games, he scrutinizes the QB’s. “I focus on their footwork and their pocket presence. And where their eyes go. That’s something I needed to work on.”

Now a nicely-sculpted 6-1, 200-pounder, Stenstrom surprisingly didn’t play quarterback until eighth grade, because he was too chubby until then.

“Growing up, playing ‘red stripe’ football, I was too heavy (by the rules) to carry the ball, so I was the center,” he explained. “I was always the biggest kid in my grade. I was a chunk. Then I started thinning out, and I just sprouted up. A lot of work in the weight room helped, too.”

State, is looking for a college team and should fi nd one. He plans to major in engineering with an eye toward medical applications.

Mustangs compete in 7 events at state, score in 5 The Mounds View swimming team had a delegation of six girls in seven events at the state Class AA swimming meet and scored points in five of them by placing in the top 16. The Mustangs totaled 25 points for 22ndplace on Nov. 15-16 at the University of Minneota.

Top finish was 10th place by the 200 freestyle relay team of Zoe Rylander, Nora Waffensmith, Anne Moen and Megan West in 1:39.29. West placed 14th in 100 freestyle with 53.26. Alli Misialek was 15th in butterfly with 58.27 after setting a school record of 57.11 in prelims. Also a backstroke qualifier, she didn’t make top 16.

Misialkek, Moen and West placed 15th in 3:38.68. The medley relay team of Misialek, Elly Lynch, Zoey Rylander and Moe placed 16th in 1:51.90. Annie Moen reached the consolation finals with a 24.39 in prelims but had a DQ. All are seniors except Lynch, a sophomore.

“The girls gave their best efforts and they were having fun all the way through the end of the meet, going out for pizza and cookies afterwards,” coach Chris Yauch said. “I could hardly have asked for a better and more fun finish to the season.”

The 5-10, 210 pound lineman made 77 tackles, including seven quarterback sacks and 12 tackles for loss, as he helped the Mustangs post two shutouts while holding four teams to a single touchdown and two others to two touchdowns. Choosing shade-grown coffee supports Minnesota’s birds

Where to find shade-grown coffee The Sparrow Cafe in South Minneapolis touts itself as the “only coffeeshop in Minneapolis with certified bird-friendly coffee.” This cafe carries Birds & Beans coffee, which is the Smithsonian-certified Bird Friendly coffee brand. Birds & Beans works with family farms in Latin America who maintain native tree canopies.

The coffee is organic and fair trade.

Other brands of shade-grown coffee can be found at local grocery stores, or even ordered online with a subscription service delivered to your house. Burns said that the Bird Friendly seal from the Smithsonian’s certification program is one of the highest standards for shade-grown coffee. Not all coffee that is shadegrown is necessarily beneficial for birds. Native trees are the most helpful for bird habitat. Organizations such as Sustain Coffee make it their

mission to help coffee farmers plant native trees on their farms in order to assist in facing the challenges of climate change and habitat fragmentation.

“What’s great about products like coffee is that these producers are making it easier for people to identify for consumers to find them,” Burns said. Shoppers can also look for the green tree frog stamp that marks coffee certified by the Rainforest Alliance, which is another good choice for environmentally sustainable coffee.

“If people are in a place where they

are grocery stores, where they’re not seeing those certifications, but they see things like ‘organic,’ that’s great too, but these certifications are not all created equal. But I think with coffee it is made relatively easy.”

The Birds & Beans Smithsonian-certified coffee is the most rigorous standard you can get, Burns said.

“When you’re reaching for a product that you can feel good about, they’re doing all of the things that really speak to that sustainability model,” she said.

Winter mornings go great with a hot cup of coffee and a relaxing view of migrating birds—but there might be a stronger connection between that cup of coffee and the birds at the feeder than you realize.

Most of the coffee consumed in the U.S. comes from Brazil and Columbia, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Many of the migratory bird species that pass through Minnesota each year, such as warblers and orioles, spend their winters in these same places.

Much of our coffee comes from plantations where large forest ecosystems have been eliminated in favor of a single coffee bean crop that receives full sun. This system has long been regarded to yield the highest output of coffee, but it also severely limits the rich native biodiversity of the region.

Shade-grown coffee is an alternative growing method that allows some native canopy to remain standing. This provides habitat for native species of wildlife, including the hundreds of bird species that take refuge there.

Katie Burns is the outreach coordinator for Audubon Minnesota, and harbors a personal passion for supporting the shade-grown coffee industry.

Minnesota is a geographically critical area for migratory birds, Burns said. Around 60 percent of the birds in North America use the Mississippi Flyway, which includes the St. Croix River region, on their seasonal migration routes.

“They’re not just cruising right through; they’re stopping to rest, to eat, to recharge their batteries,” Burns said. “We’re so lucky to be able

to enjoy all these birds. It brings great responsibility, to do good things to places that they go when we don’t see them. It’s not just about Minnesota.

The choices that we make have a local impact, but they also have a global impact.”

In the wake of the recent report that North American bird populations have declined by 3 million in last 50 years, many people are looking for individual actions that can help.

Choosing shade-grown coffee is one way, Burns said.

“One thing we can do for birds is provide them with habitat strongholds, which they need now but will also need in the future. These are things we can do now to help the birds that we love, that we see, and also make sure our future generations are able to enjoy them as much as we do.”

Empowering adults to help teens ‘Change to Chill’

The percentage of ninth grade students who reported that they had mental health concerns lasting six months or more increased from 12.5% in 2013 to 17.3% in 2016 and 23.1% in 2019. The percentage of 11th graders who said they seriously considered suicide in the past year increased from 9.7% in 2013 to 12% in 2016 and 13.3% in 2019.

Allina Health is trying to make an impact on those numbers, compiled from the 2019 Minnesota Student Survey (MSS) administered by the Minnesota Department of Education every three years.

“We want to raise awareness of this resource that has been created and is free for use to our community,” said Kaitlin Codner, nurse educator with Allina Health. “We want to help build resiliency and coping skills and help them start thinking of ways to have those conversations with teens.”

Allina Health recently hosted two Change to Chill training sessions for the north metro at White Bear Lake City Hall and at the Centennial Library. Change to Chill, which was launched in 2014, is a free online mental well-being program that aims to help identify what stress is, what causes it and, most importantly, how to manage it. The website includes resources, lessons and activities that are tailored to teens and educators/ parents. Techniques include mindfulness, life balance, mindful movement and guided imagery.

Over the past two years, Allina Health has offered nearly 100 training sessions across its service area. “We see a lot of variety in attendance ... teachers, community leaders, directors for youth programs, YMCAS, nonprofits, volunteer services staff, counselors and even grandparents,” Codner explained.

Centennial Library Branch Manager Mary Healy was one of the 15 registered for the session.

“We work with all different age groups here at the library, teens being one of them. It’s important to know how we as community members can support teens in short term and long term,” she said. “I am also a parent to a pre-teen, so I wanted some tools for me to help my child as he begins to navigate through the stressful teen years.”

One of the main goals of the training sessions is to familiarize attendees with the Change to Chill website and all it has to offer. All of the content, activities and videos are designed in partnership with high school interns. “We want it to be realistic, relevant and relatable,” Codner said.

“We want those who attend our sessions to feel confident and able to use our website and program as a resource.”

Healy said she felt the training was very useful.

“I hope to take the resources we got and dive in a little deeper and see what we can do here at the library,” she said. “A lot of the information we learned is useful for all of us in our everyday lives, so will be helpful at work and at home.”

Allina Health also has a Change to Chill School Partnership program, which works with schools directly to create things such as “chill weeks” and “chill zones.”
