“It’s hot, it’s fresh, it’s delicious,” said Grocery Store Fanatics President Donald Ericson as he tasted Kowalski’s fried chicken in Shoreview on a tour of northeast metro grocery stores Oct. 10.

Ericson, of Mora, tours grocery stores across the state in search of great tastes. One of his signature reviews

is the “Fried Chicken Challenge,” in which he tastes a store’s deli fried chicken for heat, freshness and fl avor.

No store has yet failed his challenge.

Ericson, an employee at Cub in North Branch, takes a day off every couple of months to tour all brands of grocery stores across the state. “He’s like the connector of the whole grocery industry,” said his

Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office patrol deputies began using body cameras Sept. 27. All patrol deputies in White Bear Township, Vadnais Heights and Shoreview will now wear them at all times.

Deputies will turn on their cameras when they respond to a call or an incident, said Sheriff Bob Fletcher during a press conference at the Arden Hills Patrol Station Sept. 27. Incidents include any interaction with residents that

Shoreview launches new look The city of Shoreview takes great pride in its reputation as a welcoming and vibrant community set within a natural landscape. Now, the city has a new look to match.

The City Council accepted and rolled out a new city logo and brand at its Oct. 7 meeting.

The logo, designed by Peters Design Company, represents the natural landscape within the city featuring trees and water. While the new logo has a modern design, it has a timeless quality that was influenced by the city’s previous looks. It can also be used across a number of design platforms.

“We are excited to reveal the refreshed look for the city as we get ready to move into a new decade,” said Mayor Sandy Martin. “The new brand will improve the city’s visibility and allow us to effectively communicate with our residents and visitors.”

communication plan, approved earlier this year.

Through the new logo design, the city will be able to clearly and consistently promote Shoreview as a great place to live, work and play, both now and into the future. Additionally, the new brand will make it easier for staff to develop effective communications across all city departments.

The city will be rolling out the new logo in multiple phases. The fi rst phase will take place immediately and includes the city’s print and digital media such as the ShoreViews newsletter, website and social media. In 2020, residents will begin to see the new logo on uniforms and marketing materials. Larger items such as water towers, park signs, street signs, and vehicles will be updated as part of future maintenance or replacement.

Comfort food just when we’ll need it

LINO LAKES — This January or February when everyone is ready for winter to be over, locals can warm up their bellies with signature, handmade pasta dishes at a new restaurant.

Shortly after the fi rst of the new year, Campanelle Restaurant & Bar will open its doors to customers at 7114 Otter Lake Road in Lino Lakes.

Campanelle will be located in the same building as Dunkin', on the west side, closest to the McDonalds.

Owner Kent Bergmann, a Lino Lakes resident, has been in the restaurant industry for 24 years and counting and is thrilled to open up a restaurant in his own community.

“I have done everything from starting out as dishwasher, serving, bartending, all the way up to general manager and consulting. I've been wanting to do something in the community, and this opportunity arose real close to home,” he said.

“I wanted to offer the community something that is not here currently.”

Most recently, Bergmann's job has been offering independent consulting services to restaurants.

He helps restaurants set up point-ofsale systems, develop menus, come up with marketing campaigns etc.

Campanelle, which means bellflowers, or “little bells,” in Italian, is the type of noodle that the restaurant will make every morning for its variety of baked pasta dishes.

Campanelle noodles are shaped like a cone with a ruffed edge, or a belllike flower.

“The pasta we are using really lends itself well to the genuine gooeyness of that melted cheese because it really gets inside of every piece of pasta the way it is made.

So every bite you are guaranteed to get yourself a mouthful,” Bergmann explained.

Campanelle Restaurant & Bar plans to open for business in January or February 2020 at 7114 Otter Lake Road in Lino Lakes.

Even though the restaurant will be using an Italian type of pasta, it won’t be an Italian restaurant.

Every pasta dish will be cooked in a skillet and served in that skillet.

“That way they will stay nice and toasty to your table,” Bergmann said.

In addition to the pasta dishes, Campanelle will also serve appetizers, salads, soups and sandwiches.

“It will be your ultimate comfort food. We are going to have so many dishes, anything from chicken Tex-Mex, to Reuben-style mac and cheese dishes, shrimp, you name it we will have everything available ... beef, pork, seafood vegetarian,” he said. The restaurant will also have gluten-free noodles and a full bar.

Eagle Brook names new senior pastor Members of Eagle Brook Church, in a special meeting, voted Jason Strand as senior pastor, effective when Bob Merritt retires March 2020.

Strand has been a teaching pastor alternating the pulpit with Merritt for the last five years.

Merritt retires after 28 years serving as senior pastor. During his tenure, the church has grown rapidly with eight campuses surrounding the Twin Cities, and one in Rochester.

The search committee has looked across the country at the top 100 churches for a potential candidate.

After reviewing three or four potential candidates, Jason topped the list.

When Merritt retires and Strand becomes senior pastor, Ryan Leak will become a member of the teaching team, speaking 10 to 12 times next year.

Members of Eagle Brook, on Oct. 6, voted unanimously for Strand as senior pastor.

Merritt commented that Strand is one of the best teaching pastors in the country and is in concert with the nine core beliefs of Eagle Brook.

Eagle Brook’s mission is “empowered by God to reach others for Christ.”

Merritt concluded by saying we give thanks to God for grace and mercy in development of the Eagle Brook ministry.

Liberty

ur ferry cruised along on a sunny September day, the Manhattan skyline looming behind, as I peered ahead at the colossal statue before me.

She rose sea green from the harbor, holding high a beacon of hope to those who travel the seas. What I most wanted to see was inside the statue. There, deep in Lady Liberty’s pedestal, was the original plaque from 1903 bearing a poem written about the statue’s meaning by Emma Lazarus in 1883:

“The New Colossus” “Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, Story With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Chaser Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates Sara Marie Moore shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

‘Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!’ cries she With silent lips. ‘Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Lazarus wrote this poem to help the fundraising effort for Liberty’s pedestal. The statue was a gift from France; the pedestal was funded by the U.S. A lack of American response prompted Joseph Pulitzer’s “New York World” newspaper to begin a fundraising campaign. Lazarus’ poem was printed in the paper and read at the opening of the fundraising exhibit.

Back on the ferry, I peered at the small island ahead of me: Ellis Island, where millions of immigrants were processed from the late 1800s to the early 1920s.

My great-grandmother Inga Marie passed this way in 1907. What must she have thought when she saw Lady Liberty after weeks at sea? She was only 11. Perhaps an excerpt from an article written about her first visit back to Norway in 1953 gives insight into what Liberty meant to so many immigrants. She and her husband Knute visited Norway via ship and returned to the New York harbor three months later.

“The Statue of Liberty gave them the feeling of security and friendship as they entered New York harbor and were ‘home’ again. It seemed good to put foot on American soil once more,” reads the article originally published in the Fort Dodge, Iowa newspaper “The Messenger.”

I walked the halls of the immigration center on Ellis Island, now a museum. To think millions of people passed this way was impressed upon me by the deep impressions seen on the granite stairs — at its height, almost a million people took these stairs each year.

As we bounced aboard the ferry back to Manhattan, Lady Liberty became dwarfed in the backdrop of the 21st century.

The next morning, I opened the New York Times.

About 10,000 migrants landed in Greece last month on dinghies, most fleeing the Taliban in Afghanistan.

About 400 children have died this year in a refugee camp in northeast Syria, mostly of malnutrition, pneumonia and dysentery. The president of Turkey, overwhelmed by 3.6 million Syrian refugees, threatens to let them pass through to Europe if the world doesn’t help.

The U.S. president threatens to slash the refugee program to zero. Over the last few years, one of the U.S.’s most vetted immigration programs has been whittled from the typical 70,000 to 30,000.

In 2020, it will be 18,000, the lowest since the program began in 1980. Other countries are beginning to follow the U.S.’s meager example.

The tired, poor, homeless, tempest-tost refuse of the world’s teeming shores is cast aside. They die. And deep inside, Lady Liberty cries.

e became more familiar with E. coli after the Minnesota Department of Health investigated an outbreak at the State Fair last month. Investigators identified 11 cases among Minnesota residents who visited the fair prior to becoming ill. Fairgoers ages 2 to 43-years-old were sickened with one patient hospitalized with serious complications from called hemolytic uremic syndrome, which affects the kidneys. According to evidence, contact with livestock was a key factor. A commonality between all cases is that those infected reported visiting the Miracle of Birth exhibit and having contact with calves, goats, Movers & sheep or piglets.

varieties of E. coli are harmless or cause relatively brief diarrhea. But a few particularly nasty strains, such as E. coli O157:H7, can cause severe abdominal cramps, bloody diarrhea and vomiting. Potential sources of exposure include contaminated food or water and person-to-person contact.

Treatment for E. coli is often rest and hydration and, in some cases, antibiotics. Healthy people who are infected with E. coli will usually feel better in a week. E. coli O157 can be passed from person to person through fecal-oral transmission, especially among families with children still in diapers. It can be passed in the stool for weeks, and sometimes even months after symptoms resolve.

Symptoms typically appear eight to 12 hours after eating and can last for one to two days. Food poisoning begins with abdominal cramping, and commonly causes vomiting and diarrhea.

Constipation Constipation is a common condition in which a person does not pass stool as often as they need to. This can result in large, hard and painful to pass stools. There are many causes of constipation such as diet and medications.

This is a very common discomfort that happens when you are inactive, consume too much dairy or not enough fiber or water. Over-thecounter stool softeners can help in the short-term with dietary and lifestyle changes in the long-term.

A lot of money is paid out from this organization to help the children of Minnesota. Isn’t it interesting that Legislative auditors found CCAP providers pretended they were serving more children than they actually were, lied about the hours spent watching the children, and overbilled? If that weren’t enough, according to a Fox 9 report, up to about 40% of the CCAP money ($100,000,000) was fraud, and much ended up being sent to Somalia. What if that money had gone to Minnesotan children rather than possibly ending up in the hands of Somalian terrorists? Potentially many more children could have been helped (and fewer people would have died?). Our tax dollars were spent on 30,000 children. This could have been 50,000 children. Why hasn’t she exposed or worked to solve these fraud problems while she is supervising at the CCAP? If she knows about it, why isn’t she serving as a whistleblower and exposing it? If she doesn’t know about it, why doesn’t she know? Should we elect her as a Ramsey County commissioner? Can’t we find anyone who is not so inexperienced or naive, regardless of what party they come from? Should we as a bare minimum expect for our taxpayer dollars to be spent on the right things?

Social media alternative ‘off the grid’

“The Horn,” started by Twin Cities entrepreneurs, is an ad-free social media alternative that doesn’t sell your data.

The social media site is fee-based — $30 per year or $3.99 per month, said one of its founders, Jeff Myer, who owns White Bear Glass and lives in Forest Lake. “Because of that, we don’t take any analytics of what is driving people onto our site,” he explained. The site is walled off from the public web and can only be accessed via paid membership.

The site is meant for small groups of people who would like to share photos and information with each other privately, Myer explained. It is a place to share photos with your close friends, in a place your employer isn’t going to fi nd, he said. Members can create private groups.

“It’s for that more intimate relationship you have with siblings and family members and the three close high school friends you have, and the five close college friends you have,” Myer noted.

The social media site was launched in November last year and has about 1,500 users, Myer said. Users have to be 18 and live in the U.S. The site isn’t meant to compete with or replace Facebook or other sites but instead offer an alternative. “We have no illusion we are going to replace Mark’s (Zuckerberg) product,” Myer said.

The Horn was started by Myer, his brother-in-law John Podgorak of Mahtomedi, and family friend Jim Touchi-Peters of Minneapolis. Myer

and Podgorak, who owns a utility and excavating company, offer their business sense while Touchi-Peters is the chief creative officer. Eleven people are now involved, all family except for Touchi-Peters.

Touchi-Peters works full-time for The Horn. The site was his idea, which he came up with five to seven years ago when he became fed up with Facebook, he said. He disliked seeing so many ads, posts from friends of friends, and the issues the company was running into with privacy. He left the social media network and began dreaming of alternatives.

Ironically, he is back on Facebook to advertise The Horn, but said he spends as little time as possible on the site. But utilizing the social media giants is one way The Horn hopes to gain more members. “Our goal is to get to 10,000 paid members by our second year,” Myer said.

Touchi-Peters said sometimes people don’t understand why there would be a charge for a social media site. “My response to that is Facebook isn’t free,” he said. “Facebook takes your data and resells it.” The Horn is protected from search engine indexing, he added. “It’s off the grid in that way,” he explained.

“We took all the problems people have accused Facebook of doing and attempted to solve them,” Touchi-Peters said.

The Horn was named after the phone — using the retro word used for the telephone from the ’50s to the ’70s, Touchi-Peters said. More information on the social media site can be found at thehorn.net.

Much in the way we use social media (but more civil, in my opinion), news media offer a forum, for the people who matter most – the members of our own community.

But beyond offering a means for citizens to exercise their First Amendment freedoms, news media also help protect those rights: through their role as government watchdogs. News media are often the fi rst to report when government officials try to overstep their bounds and hinder Americans’ right to information, made available through freedom of the press. Journalists work to keep the legislative process transparent and hold government officials accountable. Perhaps because of our prominent mention in the Constitution, news media are uniquely committed to their pursuit of the truth.

But news publishers are fi nding themselves currently without a way to recoup their investment in quality news, which puts the future of jour-

nalism in jeopardy. The tech platforms currently do not pay for their use of news content, making it increasingly difficult for publishers to reinvest in journalism. The Alliance has called for news publishers to be granted an antitrust safe harbor to be able to come together to negotiate for better business terms with the platforms. This is the best solution to correcting the imbalance in the digital ecosystem and ensuring a sustainable future for digital news.

We are encouraged that a bill that would do just that – the Journalism Competition & Preservation Act – was introduced in the House and the Senate earlier this year.

News media have made our democracy stronger, our citizenry more informed and engaged, and our Constitutional rights secure and strong.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office reported the following incidents: • Drug paraphernalia was found in the area of the Rice Creek North Regional Trail Sept. 22 west of the trail head at Snelling Avenue and Sherwood Road. Items were seen by a person walking their dog; a deputy recovered items and submitted them for destruction.

• A 34-year-old male was arrested Sept. 23 on a domestic assault warrant after being stopped for dark window tint and no seat belt use.

• Theft was reported in the 5900 block of Rice Creek Parkway Sept.

24. A male and female ordered at Red Ginger China Bistro, ate food, attempted to pay with counterfeit $100 bill and then left without paying.

• Theft of bicycle was reported on Blue Jay Lane in North Oaks Sept.

25. It was taken from a yard and was later recovered abandoned near Donbush Road and West Pleasant Lake Road. No suspects.

• Squads responded to a domestic assault that occurred in the 4200 block of Sylvia Lane in Shoreview Sept. 25. The offender was not on scene; a citation was issued.

• An adult male was arrested on a warrant in the 4300 block of Victoria Street Sept. 25.

• Theft of a mailbox was reported on Scotch Pine Circle Sept. 27. It was taken off the post sometime overnight. No suspects.

• A drunk driver was arrested in the 5900 block of Lexington Avenue North Sept. 29. The vehicle was reported swerving, stopping and then speeding up. The 56-yearold female suspect had difficulty keeping her balance, admitted to drinking prior to driving, and had

require police action, such as traffic stops, Fletcher explained.

The implementation of body cameras for patrol deputies is phase one of the office’s plans to get body cameras for all 400 of its staff, Fletcher said. In October, deputies in the courts and civil process divisions will receive cameras. Later this year, correctional officers who work at the jail will receive them.

Deputies at the press conference said they are glad to have body cameras. The cameras provide legal protection and will make writing reports easier.

The sheriff’s office is the third largest law enforcement agency in the state to implement body cameras, Fletcher said. The St. Paul and Minneapolis police departments have already implemented them. The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office and Minnesota State Patrol have yet to do so.

Ramsey County implemented body cameras earlier than planned due to Fletcher’s campaign promise to roll them out as soon as possible.

“These cameras are a symbol of trust,” Fletcher said. Many people are not sure if they can trust law enforcement but the cameras make it easier to build relationships of trust, he noted. “Day in and day out this is about how we relate with others in the community,” he added.

Fletcher performed audits of body cameras before he was reelected sheriff and learned how interactions between citizens and officers improve when the cameras are used. They hold both deputies and community members accountable.

The sheriff’s office will keep the recordings for 90 days to a year. But critical incidents where a deputy uses use of force will never be deleted.

• There was a dog bite investigation and subsequent rabies quarantine after an incident on Avon Street Oct. 1. While walking her dog, a Shoreview woman suffered a small laceration while trying to separate her dog and an unleashed dog that were fighting. Her dog also had injuries that broke the skin.

The unleashed dog’s owner was identified, and the incident is under investigation.

• A construction trailer loaded with tools valued over $40,000 was stolen from construction site overnight Oct. 2 near Hodgson Road and Floral Drive. No suspects.

• An adult male was arrested for drug possession in the 100 block of Grass Lake Place Oct. 3. Squads were dispatched on a report of a suspicious male stealing landscaping rocks. The male was found to have an active warrant from Kanabec County and was in possession of controlled substances.

• A St. Paul man was arrested for fourth-degree DWI after being involved in a motor vehicle accident Oct. 5. The man rear-ended a vehicle, which was pushed into a third vehicle.

• A front passenger window was broken on a vehicle parked in the boat launch lot by Lake Owasso Oct. 5. A phone, money clip and credit cards were stolen.

Neighbor newspaper ceases operations NORTH ST. PAUL — The Lillie Suburban Newspaper group ceased operation after the Oct. 2, 2019 issue. The Lillie family has owned the newspaper group for 82 years.

The newspaper company is the oldest and largest weekly publication company in the St. Paul area, primarily focused in Ramsey County.

Ted H. Lillie, company owner, said it was too difficult to keep operating when advertising agencies have pulled away from print; the changing demographics of fi rst-ring suburbs has also affected business.

Lillie had a partner, Jeff Enright, who fi led Chapter 7 bankruptcy in August 2018. He said while it was difficult, they were able to come through that and pay their bills

and were beginning to make money again.

The company published eight newspapers in Shoreview, Roseville, Oakdale, Maplewood, New Brighton and St. Anthony, as well as the East Side Review in St. Paul and South-West Review covering South St. Paul and Inver Grove Heights.

Lillie indicated he recently lost his sales manager, who had purchased a business in northern Minnesota after losing interest in managing the sales department.

Lillie and his wife will continue to live in Rochester, where she is on staff at Mayo Clinic.

We hadn’t experienced much in the way of sun this month and this weekend was no exception. The sun was out the first few days of last week but other than that clouds have ruled. I’ve already totaled 3.5 inches of rain this month which is nearly an inch wetter than normal. Our first snow fell this past Saturday collecting on the deck furniture and grass before quickly melting. I fell below the freezing point Saturday morning for the first time this season. The Airport is still holding out for its first freeze but it shouldn’t be too much longer for them. Fall color is really showing up around the area as Maple trees are ablaze with color.

Farmaste offers safe haven for unwanted farm animals

Jeka, Violet and Ophelia, 2-year-old Yorkshire Cross pigs, have been lucky in life and have only known love and kindness from people. Their mom’s start to life was not as happy. A breeding sow, she was rescued from the largest farm animal cruelty case in the northeastern U.S. With the Westport Massachusetts Police Department, the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) assisted with the rescue of over 1,000 farm animals from a 70-acre property. The conditions from which she was rescued were deplorable — many of the animals were showing signs of neglect and had no access to food or water. Deceased animals were mixed in with living animals throughout the property.

These girls’ mother was one of the survivors, and the ASPCA placed her in a foster home where, shortly after her arrival, she gave birth to a litter that included Jeka, Violet and Ophelia.

This is just one of the many stories about the farm animals who have been rescued by and live out their days at Farmaste Animal Sanctuary in Lindstrom. Stillwater resident and founder Kelly Tope founded the nonprofit organization in 2016. Farmaste took in its fi rst animal, a Holstein named Gertie, in July 2017. The 79-acre site was donated by area residents Pete and Laura Hoeffler.

Tope’s full-time job is franchise development for Crisp & Green in Wayzata. After her dog Mowgli became ill and she had to take care of him, she quickly realized something was missing in her life. “I’ve always loved animals, but once I had to take care of him, I knew I wanted to help take care of animals. I wanted to take care of animals that had health problems (or) were in need, or ones that other people might not take in,” she said.

“We really try to help educate about the animals and what their lives are like outside of sanctuary so people can learn about them and get to know that they have personalities.”

She began researching and knew she didn’t want to go back to school to be a veterinarian. She stumbled across Farm Sanctuary in New York and took a trip out there to see what farming was all about. She loved it so much that she returned to go through a training program.

“I was able to take my business hat and mold that together with my love of animals. It was a good fit to be able to put those two together. It is certainly a labor of love,” she explained.

Currently 22 animals call Farmaste home, including cows, goats, pigs and sheep. Eventually Tope said they will expand that to chickens. Most of the animals have been rescued from around Minnesota, but some have come from Iowa, Wisconsin and Florida. The organization does not rescue pets but, rather, tries to save the animals that would have gone into the food industry.

“We are very careful about how many animals we rescue because of the fact that they will stay for life, so we need to be able to pay and care for them for life,” Tope explained. “Many people don’t know that cows live to be 20 to 25 years old.”

Tope added that the sanctuary turns down about five to six calls a week.

Farmaste is one of three farm sanctuaries that currently operate in the state — Spring Farm is located in Long Lake and Little Acorn is in Northfield.

A big goal of Farmaste, Tope said, is education.

“We really try to help educate about the animals and what their lives are like outside of sanctuary so people can learn about them and get to know that they have personalities,” she said. “They are funny, they are sweet, they build family groups, they like to play, (and) if one dies they mourn.”

Hugo resident Beth Beaman is one of the around 20 volunteers with Farmaste. As an animal lover, she has volunteered at the area Humane Society for many years but had always wanted to volunteer at a farm sanctuary. She began sponsoring an animal at a sanctuary out in California but was thrilled when she found out about Farmaste.

“Farm animals are a different experience. A lot of times the farm animals don’t get the same exposure that cats and dogs do,” she explained.

“It is really fun to meet all of the animals and realize what personalities they have. We know cats and dogs have personalities, but you really don’t think about farm animals having personalities until you interact with them.”

Beaman said volunteering at Farmaste has given her a whole new appreciation for what farm kids did growing up. It has also provided her an outlet to de-stress.

“It is really rewarding and peaceful,” she said.

“I have a really stressful job, and there is no better way to end an awful week. The animals are

always happy to see you. When the animals come in, they are terrified, but it is really rewarding to see them warm up and open up to you, knowing the bad life they had before.”

Members of the public are invited to come and tour Farmaste at 11:30 a.m. or 3 p.m. on Saturdays, May through October. Farmaste also hosts various events such as Girls Night and Couples Night in addition to summer day camps.

Next year, Tope said the organization plans to roll out a teen wellness program for teens who struggle with anxiety and depression.

“It is nice for people struggling with depression and anxiety to come and be with the animals.

These animals come from very broken places, so it is really neat for them to heal, for the kids to heal and really fi nd that bonding experience,” Tope said.

County reveals proposed Birch Street project

LINO LAKES — The media center at Rice Lake Elementary (RLE) was standing room only at Anoka County's open house regarding the proposed Birch Street improvements Oct. 1.

The county began discussing the project at the beginning of the year. Assistant Anoka County Engineer Joe MacPherson said the county has met with staff from RLE and the city to discuss concerns for the corridor on multiple occasions, but this was the fi rst time the public was shown the proposal.

“We have really dialed in, know the traffic volumes and what the issues are. It is a long overdue project and it is ready to be done. We feel confident that roundabouts are a good choice and alternative, but we do want to gain some consensus from the community and city,” MacPherson said. “We take the comments to heart. We take them back, talk about them with our design team and try to address as many of them as we can that are practical.”

City Engineer Diane Hankee said the city supports improvements along Birch Street that improve safety and mobility. “It is early in the process, and we were excited to see such a large turnout. It is extremely important to have community input in the beginning stages of the project.

This will only help define a project that addresses a majority of the issues along the corridor,” she explained.

As it sits right now, the $3 million project, planned for construction in spring of 2021, would include two roundabouts: one at West Shadow Lake Drive and the other at Tomahawk Trail.

Birch Street would remain two lanes in width and the roundabouts would be a single lane. A raised median would be installed throughout the project.

Pedestrian accommodations on both sides of the road would also be completed from Ware Road to Birch Court.

“We are trying to preserve as much space as we can for the homes along Birch Street and have the least amount of impact,” MacPherson said. “We determined that a two-lane section with raised medians can facilitate traffic volumes now and well into the future based on current traffic levels.”

Anoka County completed a corridor study back in 2011 that ultimately recommended a four-lane roadway from Ware Road through West Shadow Lake Drive. The county’s 2030 Transportation plan projected that Birch Street would see a volume of 20,000 cars per day. “(The study) had some pretty

aggressive projections, and we haven’t gotten close to that. We are around 12,000 vehicles per day now,” he explained.

The county performed an additional traffic analysis and collected data both last year and this year, which helped engineers determine that the two roundabouts and raised medians would be the best option.

One of the main themes from the open house was reluctance to change, MacPherson said. “It is a corridor that has been there for a long time, and a lot of residents have lived there a long time. People are always hesitant to change.”

The county received many comments/questions.

One of the main comments/questions concerned roundabouts. MacPherson explained, “Roundabouts are still a concept that is new in a lot of people’s eyes ... During the development of this layout, we heard a lot of comments about speed along the corridor. It is wide open and has good sight lines, so people cruise down that corridor,” he said. “Roundabouts are a natural traffic calming feature and design tool. It really helps slow cars down so people have more time to react if there is a pedestrian in a crosswalk.” Roundabouts also have fewer points of conflict. “A typical intersection has 32 points of

conflict; a roundabout has eight points of conflict,” he noted.

Another comment the county heard was from residents who were less than pleased with the addition of a center median. “We want to get turning movements out of the through lane. The roundabouts will allow people to make a safe, legal U-turn,” MacPherson said.

For now, the county will continue to collect and delve into community feedback. Another open house is planned in the spring. Eventually, the project will need municipal consent from Lino Lakes. The county is planning a one-year project in 2021, but it is possible some things may need to be finished up in 2022.

Quality of resources improves seniors’ quality of life Age brings wisdom, it’s said. Which is what came to mind when I read about a new study from the University of Alberta and University of Victoria in Canada showing that for seniors, the perception of having “enough” in the areas of health, financial resources and relationships enhances the overall quality of their lives. These folks didn’t require a perfect body, a big bank account or a dreamy relationship — the study participants (all senior citizens) simply wanted to have enough to meet their needs. “It’s about people’s perception of their position in life relative to their own standards and beliefs,” Gail Low, RN, PhD, lead researcher told me.

IS IT ENOUGH FOR YOU? Using a quality of life questionnaire developed in association with the World Health Organization, the researchers were interested in assessing whether older

adults’ perception of their health, financial circumstances, meaning and purpose in life, emotional support, and home and physical environment would influence their responses to the question, “How would you rate your quality of life?”

It showed that for seniors, seeing themselves as having sufficient financial resources, good health or meaning in life positively influenced their overall quality of life.

Quality of life is a complex perception to measure. This World Health Organization Quality of Life survey featured questions that ranged from, “How satisfied are you with the level of intimacy in your life?” to “To what extent do you find your life to be meaningful?” Participants were not asked to provide information specifically on how much money they had nor were health measures clinically taken — they were asked instead for their perceptions on these matters. Those giving positive answers to the specific questions also tended to rate their quality of life the highest overall.

LIFE LESSON It’s a basic finding, but, I think, an important one. If you have enough to meet your needs, if you have purpose and meaning and emotional connection in your life, and if you are healthy enough to live without extensive physical limitations, you’re likely to have a more positive view of your life. With media constantly providing theoretical examples of what we should all have or be, it is important to keep in mind that sometimes you can’t change your circumstances, but you can usually change your perception of them. It’s about what is right for you, not what the media says you should be or have. That goes far toward making life better for everyone… not just seniors.

Questions to ask when your doctor prescribes a new medicine Though few people may want to take medicine each day, prescription drugs prolong lives and help people manage conditions that might otherwise make it difficult to live life to the fullest.

A 2017 survey from Consumer Reports found that 55% of people living in the United States take a prescription medicine. The survey also found that those who take prescription drugs use an average of four such medications.

That figure might alarm some people, especially aging men and women whose bodies might be more susceptible to conditions that are often treated with medication.

There’s no denying that prescription drugs can save lives.

But men and women have a right to explore their options when doctors prescribe them medications, and asking the right questions when doctors suggest medication can help men and women decide if prescription medicine is their best option.

To help men and women make the best decisions regarding their healthcare, the National Institute on Aging advises people to ask their physicians these questions when being prescribed a new medicine.

• What is the name of the medicine, and why am I taking it?

• Which medical condition does this medicine treat?

• How many times a day should I take the medicine, and at what times should I take it?

• If the prescription instructions say the medicine must be taken “four times a day,” does that mean four times in 24 hours or four times during the daytime?

• How much medicine should I take?

• Should I take the medicine on its own or with food?

Should I avoid certain foods and beverages when taking this medicine?

• How long will it take this medicine to work?

• Will this medicine cause problems if I am taking other medicines?

• Can I safely operate a motor vehicle while taking this medication?

• What does “as needed” mean?

• When should I stop taking the medicine?

• What should I do if I forget to take my medicine, ?

• Can I expect any side effects? What should I do if I have a problem?

• Will I need a refill, and how do I arrange that?

When discussing medications with a physician, it’s imperative that men and women be forthcoming about any other medicines they might be taking under the guidance of other doctors. In addition, men and women should tell their physicians about any over-the-counter medicines or vitamins and supplements they are taking.

Sharing such information can prevent potentially serious complications from arising.

Medicine saves lives every day. Smart patients can help medicine do its job by learning about their medications and discussing them openly and honestly with their physicians.

Home security tips for seniors Seniors are often targeted by criminals.

Though many criminals target seniors from afar via telephone or internet scams, criminals seek to enter seniors’ homes.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics offers that, between 2003 and 2013, the ratio of property crime to violent crime was higher for the elderly and persons between the ages of 50 and 64 than it was for younger persons between the ages of 25 and 49.

Home security is important for people of all ages, but especially so for seniors and aging individuals living alone. By following certain safety tips and developing a home security plan, seniors can feel safer at home.

• Lock windows and doors. It may seem like common sense, but failure to repeatedly lock windows and doors can, and often does, give burglars easy entry into the home.

• Think about a smart doorbell. Technology now enables doorbells to provide a video feed to a person’s smartphone or tablet over WiFi. This allows residents to see who is at the door and speak to this person without having to open the door. Some products like Ring® will even register motion activity and record short videos from outside of the house.

• Don’t share or leave keys. Avoid leaving keys under a mat or in a flower pot. Others

• Install a lockable mailbox. Locked mailboxes restrict access to sensitive information, such as bank account

numbers, sent in the mail. Make sure retirement checks or other payments are deposited directly into bank accounts instead of having them sent by check.

• Use home automation. Home automation, or a “smart home,” can be utilized to turn on lights, set the thermostat, lock doors, and much more.

• Adopt a dog. Dogs can be an asset to seniors. Dogs provide companionship and can bark or alert seniors if someone is around or inside of the home.

Long, cold night’s journey as Mustangs lose thriller to Raptors 41-40 a touchdown was nullified for holding, and their botched snap on a punt set up a Mustang TD. With the score 28-28, the Mustangs stopped the Raptors on the three-yard-line as Mateo Cisneros ran down Larson for no gain, after which Senstrom took them 97 yards, capped by his eight-yard run for their fi rst lead.

The Mustangs will close the regular season at Roseville Area (0-7) on Wednesday.

In a football game with more twists and turns than a rollercoaster, East Ridge stole a victory from Mounds View on Friday night, prevailing 41-40 after trailing by 12 with a minute and a half left.

With both offensives explosive in miserable conditions — mid 30’s, biting wind, and sleet — Mounds View led 40-28 after scoring four straight touchdowns.

East Ridge was fourth-and-7 from their own 35 with two minutes left and had not done much with their passing game, but quarterback Ryan Larson came up with big throws to Brody Kreisel for a long gain and Nolan Goetz for a 16-yard touchdown.

That made it 40-35 with 1:28 left. The Raptors onside-kick was grabbed by Moses Yazachew at the 32 and Larson dashed to the end zone on the next play.

The stunned Mustangs were suddenly down 41-40 but stopped Larson’s conversion run.

Mounds View started on their 13 after a strong kickoff by the Raptors. Quarterback Cole Stenstrom was having a tremendous game — 21-for-27 for 289 yards and two touchdowns, plus two rushing TDs — but moving 87 yards in 86 seconds was a daunting task. Stenstrom carved out three fi rst downs before his Hail Mary from midfield with 13 seconds left was intercepted at the one-yard-line by Nate Witte.

They still had the rare opportunity to win on the final play via a safety but could not push the Raptors back from the one.

The Mustangs passed for 395 yards, with halfback Brian Tebbut hitting 3-of-5 passes for 106 yards, including a 66-yard touchdown to Jeff Roeber. Stenstrom’s TD tosses went to Mason Dean (25 yards) and Collin Hoyhtya (four yards). Roeber caught seven for 145 yards, Tate Lahr six for 116, Hoyhtya five for 71, Dean three for 41 and Tebbutt three for 22. Tebbutt ran 16 times for 79 yards and one touch-

East Ridge (4-3) tore up Mounds View’s vaunted defense for 315 ground yards with Larson racking up 166 yards and two TDs on 27 attempts and KJ Moore 120 yards and three scores on 24 totes. Larson was 5-for-9 for 93 yards passing.

Mounds View trailed 14-0 and 28-14, then surged ahead 40-28, but missed the last two conversions which proved crucial. Swallen deflected a corner kick from Bijan Asadi for a goal in the 42nd minute. Zach Zengue made it 2-1 in the 46th minute. The Pirates got a header from Daniel Salado off a corner kick in the 78th minute.

The Mustangs beat Champlin Park 2-1 in the quarterfinals on goals by Ahmed and

Foster Conlin, the latter a penalty kick after Zengue was hit hard in the box and unable to kick.

They blanked Irondale 5-0 in their Suburban East finale and finished conference 5-3-1 for fourth place among 10 teams. Scoring were Benjamin Franz, Ahmed, Aaron Hill, Tyler Xiong and Matthew Martinson.

Mustang swimmers place 2nd in section true team The Mounds View swimmers were runners-up in the Section 4AA true-team meet behind Stillwater on Friday and Saturday, and have a 5-3 record in dual meets.

Stillwater, meet host and perennial champion, scored 1041.5, Mounds View 845.5, St. Anthony Village 556, White Bear Lake 496 and Roseville Area 45.

Annie Moen won the 50 freestyle in 25.27. That was their best event with Zoe Rylander third (25.67), Mackenzie Groth seventh (26.84) and Nora Waffensmith eighth (27.00).

The Mustangs have a 5-3 record after beating Cretin-Derham Hall 102-76 and Irondale 95-86, then losing to East Ridge 105-79, in their last three meets.

Mustang netters win ‘state calibre’ section final, head back to state

Two of the top four teams in the state battled for a state girls tennis tournament slot Wednesday, Oct. 9.

Mounds View will be that team. The Mustangs fought off Mahtomedi 4-3 for the Section 4AA championship at the U of M’s Baseline Courts.

“No doubt about it, this was a state-tournament caliber match,” said Mahtomedi coach Aaron Freer.

Mahtomedi has been ranked No. 3 in the state since upending the Mustangs 5-2 at home Sept. 18.

The Mustangs were ranked third then, and have been No. 4 since. Edina and Minnetonka are 1-2.

The Mustangs — 15-3, their other losses against No. 1 Edina — advance to the state team tournament, for the second straight year, Oct. 2224 at the U of M. “It’s very exciting,” said Paige Trondson, senior co-captain and one of many holdovers from last year’s state third-place team. “We defi nitely came out strong as a team, and we knew what to expect and how to attack them. We went doubles-strong this time.”

Mounds View won the rematch by loading up doubles, which they swept.

“I knew, based on our previous match, we had to sweep doubles, and win three or four singles, to beat them, because they have two very strong singles players,” coach Scott Sundstrom said.

“I knew that with this lineup we could sweep doubles nine times out of 10.”

Mahtomedi (17-3) quickly led 2-0 with Lauren Splett and Annika Munson winning at 1-2 singles.

Mounds View pulled even with wins by Katia Bartels at 3-singles and Amanda Diao/Katerina Smiricinschi at 1-doubles.

Then, within 30 seconds, the Trondson/Sanjana Pattanaik duo at No. 2, and Leah Bradt/Hannah Lindgren at No. 3, wrapped up straight-set victories and the Mustangs were state-bound.

They almost got a fi fth point but Elena Bartels lost a close match at 3-singles.

The Mustangs have not settled on a lineup all year but that’s a plus for them. “This team has no all-stars,” Sundstrom said, “but everyone can play where the team needs them to be successful.”

The Mustangs beat White Bear Lake and Stillwater, each 7-0, to reach the fi nals. Singles and doubles competitions wrapped up Tuesday (see presspubs.com).

Mounds View girls soccer lost an overtime shootout to Roseville Area 2-1 in the Section 5AA semifi nals Saturday, snapping a six-game win streak and ending their season with an 11-7 record.

“We weren’t ready to be done,” said coach Katelyn Fast. “That was a tough loss.”

Lilly Nowatzke scored her 19th goal for No. 3 seeded Mound View in the ninth minute. Roseville’s Kallie Tuominen tied the score on a free kick in the 13th minute.

On a cold, snowy, windy day, Mounds View continued to play the rugged defense they’ve shown late in the season but could not fi nd the net again either. The last 67 minutes of regulation and 10 minutes of overtime went scoreless, leaving it up to penalty kicks. The Raiders got the edge

“Seeing our girls play with confidence, and fi nishing the season with six shutouts before today,” Fast said, “has us excited about what we accomplished this season, and how we’re going to build into next season.”

The Mustangs beat Irondale 3-1 in the section opener, with Leah Ban, Lainy Ballinger and Nowatze scoring.

They shut out their last four regularseason opponents — Forest Lake 8-0, Henry Sibley 1-0, Park 2-0 and Irondale 5-0 — and allowed only four goals in their last eight games. Goalies are Lauren McAlpine and April Lashomb.

“Our back line has great chemistry,” Fast said, referring to Sarah Kothlow, Ellie Keillor, Ella Herbert, Lauren Danielson and Claire Redlinger. “They trust one another, communicate well, and cover for each other.”

For the Mustangs, Finn Sokolowski placed seventh (16:24), Alex Nelson 11th (16:35), Will Sacay 16th (16:41), Santino Preciado 20th (16:52) and Elliott McArthur 25th (17:02) among 139 runners.

George DeMay, Mounds View senior soccer defender and co-captain, has started 54 straight games over three years, including the Mustangs’ wins over Champlin Park 2-1 and top-seeded Park Center 3-2 in sectionals last week.

DeMay has led the Mustangs in minutes played through his career, averaging 77 per game, while also leading in clears and tackles all three years. He was allconference as a junior and honorable mention as a sophomore. Also a lacrosse and hockey player, the 5-9, 160-pound DeMay plans to play college soccer, at UW-Superior or Northern Michigan.

Congresswoman talks impeachment at town hall meeting

During a town hall meeting Wednesday, Oct. 2, U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum (DFL) wasted little time making her stance on impeachment against President Donald Trump known. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I know and I can well imagine that many of you are here tonight on a topic thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s probably the biggest story of our times,â&#x20AC;? McCollum said, addressing the crowd of constituents gathered at Stillwater Area High School. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the impeachment inquiry that was recently opened into President Trumpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s actions.â&#x20AC;?

McCollum voiced her support for the inquiry and said that Trumpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s July 25 phone call with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, in which he allegedly sought assistance from a foreign leader to investigate 2020 challenger and former Vice President Joe Biden, not only posed a grave national security threat but also â&#x20AC;&#x153;goes against the spirit of democracy.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have to say that I take no joy in this, no joy at all. This is not what I signed up to do in Congress, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s part of my job to do accountability and to defend the Constitution,â&#x20AC;? McCollum said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;President Trump and I â&#x20AC;Ś (took) the same oath of office, and that oath of office is to protect and defend the United States Constitution, not the presidency.â&#x20AC;?

Impeachment was also a major topic of conversation during the town hallâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Q&A session. While some constituents thanked McCollum for supporting impeachment proceedings, others criticized her for doing so. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If impeachment is so important, why isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t there a vote now?â&#x20AC;? asked one constituent. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not really an impeachment process; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a delay of vote just for political purposes.â&#x20AC;?

McCollum, however, stood fi rm. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thank you for your comments. I defend your right to say them, and I wholeheartedly disagree with them,â&#x20AC;? she replied.

Other constituent concerns covered a range of issuesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;such as intellectual property rights, rankedchoice voting and the federal budget deficitâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;but questions and comments primarily focused on

health care and the environment.

When asked about her support for Medicare For All, McCollum said she while she is not opposed to it, she prefers â&#x20AC;&#x153;Medicaid For All,â&#x20AC;? which would expand Medicaid from a means-limited program to one that anyone can buy into. Compared to Medi-

care for All, McCollum said, its Medicaid counterpart can be rolled out more quickly and effectively. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It covers more, and like that, we can put people on it â&#x20AC;Ś Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not as cumbersome and as startingfrom-scratch to write it,â&#x20AC;? she explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not opposed to it (Medicare For All). Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m just not there yet because I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re ready to put that in as fast as quick, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m willing to take incremental steps.â&#x20AC;?

Talk of the environment also dominated much of the Q&A portion of the meeting. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to thank you for being a voice crying out in the wilderness on behalf of the Boundary Waters,â&#x20AC;? one constituent told McCollum. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m just wondering what if you could give us some advice on what we need to do to get other national politicians and state leaders to get on the same page as you are.â&#x20AC;?

McCollum has called for the renewal of a U.S. Forestry Service study on the environmental impact of proposed sulfide-ore copper mines near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) watershed. That study, commissioned by the Obama administration in January 2017, was intended to run for two years, but was killed by Trumpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Secretary of Agriculture, Sonny Perdue, last fall.

At the town hall, McCollum reiterated her support for the study and criticized the Trump administration for canceling it. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want any science getting in the way of making a decision for profit,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re raising the awareness; youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re raising the awareness by talking about it here.â&#x20AC;?

McCollum encouraged constituents to become involved in efforts to protect the BWCA and raise public awareness of its national importance. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is a hidden gem in the Department of Interior, and it canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be hidden any longer,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We need it to be Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Acadia, and oh, yes, did I tell you about the Boundary Waters? Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to be my goal; that needs to be our collective goal.â&#x20AC;?

Get your REAL ID early ST. PAUL — Minnesotans with standard driver’s licenses or identification (ID) cards are strongly encouraged to consider applying for a REAL ID, so they’ll be prepared ahead of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s full REAL ID enforcement date of Oct. 1, 2020.

Every air traveler 18 years of age or older will need a REAL ID, enhanced driver’s license or ID, passport or passport card or another acceptable form of ID to fly within the United States or enter federal facilities beginning Oct. 1, 2020. A standard Minnesota driver’s license will not be accepted for federal use as of that date, but it will still be a valid form of identification and valid for lawful driving privileges.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Driver and Vehicle Services division (DPS-DVS) wants to make sure anyone who needs a REAL ID as of Oct. 1, 2020, has one in hand.

Passed by Congress in 2005, the

REAL ID Act establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and ID cards. The Act refers to federal anti-terrorism laws and regulations that control access to federally regulated commercial aircraft and federal facilities requiring identification to enter, such as military bases or nuclear power facilities.

"REAL ID is a coordinated effort by the federal government to improve the accuracy of driver's licenses and will greatly improve aviation security," said Minnesota TSA Federal Security Director Cliff Van Leuven. "We highly recommend that Minnesotans who plan to travel by air upgrade their standard driver's license to a REAL ID or enhanced license before the deadline."

Any eligible Minnesotan can apply for a REAL ID now, but there is a fee in addition to the standard cost of the license or ID card. It depends on how early you renew: $2 for a renewal up to 17 months before expiration;

$4 for a renewal 18-29 months before expiration; and $6 for a renewal more than 29 months before expiration.

When renewing early, four years will be added to the license or ID card’s original expiration date, so while an early renewal will cost a little more, the license or ID card will be valid for a longer period of time.

A REAL ID is not needed to drive, register to vote or to apply for federal benefits.

Required documents for REAL ID Minnesota’s new driver services system, which launched in 2018, features an online pre-application tool at https://driverservices.dps. mn.gov/EServices/_ /. Minnesotans can provide a significant amount of information online before they arrive at a driver’s license office. The tool also includes a list of required documents for each license type.

Minnesotans are required to pro-

vide additional documentation when applying for a REAL ID, compared to a standard driver’s license or ID card.

A person must provide the following in person when applying: • One document proving identity, date of birth and legal presence in the United States.

• One document proving Social Security number.

• Two different documents proving current residency in Minnesota.

Applicants must provide original documents or documents certified by the agency that issued them.

Laminated documents will not be accepted. Digital documents shown on your phone or other electronic device will also not be accepted.

COMMUNITY BRIEFS I-694 ramp changes Two traffic changes took effect at the beginning of October at the I-694/Rice Street interchange.

The new entrance ramp from Rice Street to westbound I-694 opened to traffic. The ramp has been closed for construction since March 2019.

The entrance ramp from Rice Street to eastbound I-694 is now closed for construction, which is expected to last through summer 2020. Traffic will be detoured via westbound I-694 to Victoria Street, then eastbound on I-694.

Free exercise program for those with Parkinson’s The American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) Minnesota Chapter and the Shoreview YMCA are starting a free exercise program at the Shoreview YMCA for people with Parkinson’s disease. This program, Pedaling for Parkinson’s, is available at no cost to members and nonmembers of the Y. Regular exercise is one of the key components in treating the many symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, and it has been proven that pedaling a bicycle may change the life of someone with Parkinson’s disease.

Research conducted at the Cleveland Clinic showed a 35% reduction in symptoms through the simple act of pedaling a bicycle at a rapid pace, optimally at 80-90 revolutions per minute. Fast pedaling is not a cure for Parkinson’s disease, but there is compelling evidence to show that it does make a real difference in many who try it.

Criminal justice reform forum in Shoreview Rep. Kelly Moller (DFL – Shoreview) will host a Criminal Justice Reform Forum Oct. 16 to discuss potential changes to improve outcomes from the system. The forum will be held at the Ramsey County Library – Shoreview from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Rep. Moller is a member of the House Public Safety and Criminal Justice Reform Committee and, outside of the Legislature, serves as a prosecutor.

Rep. Moller will be joined by Chris Uggen, a

University of Minnesota professor who studies crime, law and inequality. With Jeff Manza, he wrote “Locked Out: Felon Disenfranchisement and American Democracy.” He publishes extensively about criminology, criminal justice, law, and sociology. His work is frequently cited in media such as the New York Times, The Economist and NPR. Other panelists will include individuals who have experienced the criminal justice system and who will describe the barriers they encountered after completing their sentences.

Probation terms, fi nes and fees, programming and treatment within correctional facilities, voting disenfranchisement, racial disparities and consequences after sentence completion are all topics to potentially be explored at the forum.

They started the tours two years ago on his birthday, Oct. 10. Last week was the third birthday tour of Cub Foods in White Bear Township, on his 28th birthday. “He likes to get to know people,” said Store Director Steve Szondy. Employees surprised him with a birthday cookie and balloons. He was also given a tour of the meat department and learned how to make a burger patty.

He then went to Kowalski’s in Shoreview, where he toured Kowalski’s central facility, including the bakery where Kowalski’s Markets’ baked goods are made for all 12 of its stores. He was surprised with a birthday cake (with a grocery cart decoration) and top picks from cheese manager Amy Ellis. Ericson and Nerud had five more grocery store stops planned that day.

Ericson began Grocery Store Fanatics on social media about three years ago. His group recently surpassed 1,000 members, a big goal of his, he said. He’s becoming well known in the grocery store industry throughout the Twin Cities and was even given the honor of cutting the ribbon at a store in Minneapolis.

What fascinates Ericson about grocery stores is the design, layout and, of course, the food. “I’ve always loved grocery stores,” he said. As a hobby, he designs grocery stores, focusing on the strategy of flow.

After a tour, Nerud said she receives a Ph.D.-level grocery store analysis on the drive home. Ericson has Asperger syndrome, a condition

Bill Conlin, hiring manager at Kowalski’s in Shoreview, said Ericson’s tours have been good for the store, which opened in 2016. “He gets into what stores have to offer,” Conlin noted. The attention he creates has increased the following for the newer store, he added.

School launches fun run, walk

Youth and adults participated in Oak Hill Montessori School’s inaugural Fun Run and Walk Sept. 28.

More than 220 runners, walkers, volunteers and community supporters participated in Oak Hill Montessori School’s fi rst Community Fun Run and Walk Sept. 28 at Sucker-Vadnais Lake Regional Park.

The morning kicked off with a 200-yard Kids’ Dash, followed by a 5K or 1-mile run or walk option along the paved park trails. Music, food and sponsor booths rounded out the fun. It was a successful community-building and fundraising

activity for the school, which plans to make this an annual event.

Erin Doan, Oak Hill’s head of school, was delighted with the turnout. “What a great feeling to have our family and friends come together in such large numbers for this fun, family-friendly activity,” she said. “We look forward to planning more events and activities to engage the broader community throughout the year.”

Breast cancer can affect both men and women and is one of the most common forms of cancer. Thanks to increased awareness and screenings, many cases of breast cancer are diagnosed early and treated successfully.

BreastCancer.org says that invasive ductal carcinoma, or IDC, is the most common form of breast cancer, accounting for about 80 percent of all breast cancers.

The American Cancer Society says that, although IDC can affect women of any age, it is most common among women age 55 or older.

The good news is that this type of cancer is highly curable, provided it has not spread outside of the ducts to other breast tissue. Survival rates for any breast cancers diagnosed in the early stages are excellent.
