Tons of Love: Church sets new record for food shelf
Election for Mounds View School Board members, bond referendum announced
BY PASTOR JANET KARVONEN-MONTGOMERY SPECIAL TO THE PRESS
Incarnation Lutheran Church gave hungry people 5 tons of food in one month — a sign of incredible generosity and teamwork. In the month of July, the North Oaks and Shoreview faith community shattered the 5-ton mark, gathering about 11,000 pounds of food and nonfood items, such as hygiene items and diapers. In addition, about $10,600 was raised to support the ongoing mission of Ralph Reeder Food Shelf, the New Brighton food shelf affiliated with the Mounds View School District. “Our passion for helping others was embraced by the young and young at heart,” said North Oaks resident Mary Hoyme, president of the Incarnation Congregation Council. “The generosity in donating items, time and dollars to the Tons of Love food drive exceeded all expectations. This is just one of the many ways we are living out our mission, ‘Filled by God’s grace, we feed the hungry in heart, body, mind and spirit.’ We are excited by the energy surrounding this mission and the opportunities to reach our congregation and the community.” Tons of Love is Incarnation’s special monthlong food drive for Ralph Reeder, an organization that Incarnation supports all year long. The partnership has reached a new level as the number of people who are food insecure has continued to grow in the socioeconomically diverse Mounds View School District. Ralph Reeder offers services to more than 1,500 people who ask for help every

SHOREVIEW — Three seats are up for election this fall on the Mounds View Public Schools Board. One current member is on the ballot — Marre Jo Sager of New Brighton. Two more seats will open up due to the upcoming retirements of Jon Tynjala and Greg Madsen. New candidates are Shauna Bock, Mounds View; Jennifer Daniels, New Brighton; Diane Glasheen, New Brighton; Sheila Lee, Roseville; and Brendan O’Meara, Arden Hills. Elected members serve four-year terms. The board has seven members. Also on the ballot will be a request for a bond referendum of $165 million. The bond would provide funding for infrastructure due to increasing enrollment. The district has not had a bond referendum for 18 years. The bond would cost owners of a medianvalued home a tax increase of about $17 a month.

month, helping them on their road to self-sufficiency. While local needs are at their highest levels, so is the generosity of the Incarnation community. Their collective enthusiasm made Tons of Love the Ralph Reeder Food Shelf’s single largest fundraising event of the year. “You are truly living out your mission of feeding the hungry in heart, body, mind and spirit every day and we are truly blessed to call all of you our friends, neighbors and partners in the fight against hunger,” said Lisa Baker, program supervisor. Oak Hill Montessori starts school with new head of school SHOREVIEW — After Oak Hill students excitedly pose for fi rst-day-of-school photos this week, they may take notice of some of the new faces around campus. Among them is new Head of School Erin Doan. On Oak Hill’s Shoreview-based campus, every new student, teacher and staff is noticed, and Doan will be no exception. She expects and welcomes parents and students alike to stop by her office and introduce themselves. And she will soon become a familiar face as she carries on the tradition
of greeting the students at the door to start the day and talking with parents as the school year gets into full swing. “I am excited to see this space fi lled with children, laughter and learning,” Doan said. “It is at the heart of what I am passionate about. I look forward to working with families, staff and our greater community to truly create a center of learning here at Oak Hill – a resource not only for our students and families but for our neighbors, friends and other community partners.” And the Oak Hill community is equally excited to
