Lara Dallman-Weiss, the Olympic Games sailor with local roots, and her partner Nikki Barnes, were holding ninth place in the two-person dinghy competition in Tokyo as this edition of Shoreview Press went to press.

Dallman-Weiss and Barnes stayed in contention with a second-place finish in the second race Sunday, the fourth day of competition, after placing 19th in the fi rst race of the day. Their event is officially known as the 470 class.

The top 10 among 21 teams after Monday’s two races will advance to the fi nals Wednesday. The

Shoreview siblings strong in faith and family Where are they now?

When Steve and Chany Floeder were married in 1990, they knew they wanted a big family, and a big family is what they got.

“Steve grew up with seven siblings, and I grew up with only two brothers,” Chany said.

“When I fi rst met his family, there was always commotion going on all the time, and I thought it was great. I knew then that I wanted a bunch of kids.”

The “bunch of kids” turned into a magical number of 10.

From oldest to youngest, the kids are Vinnie, Louie, Bernie, Lucy, Frankie, Joey, Charlie, Annie, Jerry and Rosie.

“We lived in Arden Hills when we got married, and later had to move because we needed more room,” Chany said. “We moved to Shoreview because they have a really good school district.”

So far, eight of the Floeder kids have graduated from Mounds View High School; two more are on their way to graduation.

“The older three were in wrestling and they all were in cross-country,” Chany said.

“They were all in band and the instruments they could choose to play were their dad's old trombone, the trumpet — which we got from our neighbor — the flute and percussion.”

The oldest of the Floeder sibs, Vinnie, graduated from Mounds View High School in 2009. After high school he joined the Navy and served four years. He then went to dental school and is currently a Navy dentist in Beaufort, South Carolina. Vinnie and his wife Catherine have a 1-year-old daughter, Tori (Victoria) and plan on moving back to Minnesota when Vinnie gets out of the Navy this month. Chany said they are trying to fi nd a house in Shoreview.

Sound and color: local TikTok artist paints music

Sarah Kraning was an imaginative child, so her family didn’t think much of it when she said she could see colors and patterns whenever she heard music. No one ever seemed to know what she was talking about, so she started keeping these experiences to herself.

But today, Kraning shares her unique experience with the neurological condition auditoryvisual synesthesia with thousands of curious fans over TikTok through her informative videos and one-of-a-kind artwork.

“I went from only telling a few friends and family to sharing it on this platform,” Kraning said. “I didn’t expect the following we would get or how interested people would be. I remember feeling nervous about so many people learning about this part of my life, but quickly I realized there was a big community of people with synesthesia, and it helped them feel a little braver talking about their own synesthesia.”

Approximately 2-4 percent of the global population is estimated to have some form of synesthesia, but many people don’t even realize they have it because they’ve never heard of it.

Growing up in White Bear Lake and Mahtomedi, Kraning was always involved in the arts community, especially theater. She also grew up painting and drawing, including artwork inspired by the sounds she

could see. It wasn’t until a college psychology class that Kraning suspected she might have auditoryvisual synesthesia. She was working toward a minor in psychology for a career as a speech and language pathologist, and said she felt her face go hot when the professor described the condition.

A short time later, she took a synesthesia battery—a diagnostic test—and confirmed that the sounds she saw were always consistent, and that she did have auditory-visual synesthesia.

Her paintings are abstract representations of the colors and patterns she sees when listening to music or sounds. High chimes, for instance, appear as a bright, sparkling white or yellow, while the sounds of screamo music appear something like TV static, with a lot of dots that are harsh and fast. The colors appear in her mind’s eye as she listens, and can even become distracting when she’s trying to focus.

“It’s like a little bit of a Fantasia situation where there are colors, shapes and patterns fading in and out as the music shifts. Classical music is always pretty interesting in that there are always a lot of colors, and that affects what I experience visually. I really love alt indie music; the more instruments and weirder the instruments, the better.”

Kraning was married to her husband, Jackson, for a year before she discovered he also had a rare form of synesthesia—the ability to

taste words. There are more than 80 identified forms of synesthesia, where senses are neurologically cross-wired. Jackson’s form is called lexical-gustatory synesthesia.

“I had never heard of his type of synesthesia; I thought he was pranking me at fi rst,” Kraning said.

“It’s been a really interesting way to bond with this person I was already married to.”

Jackson has also taken on a starring role on Kraning’s TikTok account, responding to requests of what certain names and words taste like to him.

Kraning mentioned that nearly 25 percent of popular musicians have auditory-visual synesthesia, including Lorde, Billie Eilish and Kanye West. Some scientists theorize that the reason so many synesthetes are drawn to artistic careers is because of their intense aesthetic sensitivity.

TikTok has allowed Kraning not only the ability to draw on her background in art and neuroscience, but to work with musicians and creators around the world. Her artwork has attracted the attention of many musicians, including an Australian singer named Elizabeth Riordan, who has commissioned Kraning to paint the cover for her next album. She’s also been requested to create artwork for the composers of a musical adaptation of the Netflix series “Bridgerton.” Locally, she has also been invited to be an artistin-residence this fall at Osseo High

T

hose of us who live within a few miles of the border are well aware of the interstate rivalry between Minnesota and Wisconsin. I personally think that we have more in common with each other than differences, but have to admit that I’m not thrilled (and have to suppress some territorial impulses) when I see the overt display of Green Bay Packer colors during football season.

This mostly friendly, but occasionally heated, rivalry is explored in detail by a couple of former Press Publications employees via an online audio podcast titled “Minnesconsin/Wiscosota.” The curiosity and extensive experience of journalists Mark Nicklawske and Keith Uhlig is evident as they playfully debate and explore a variety of topics including, but not limited to, cheese (of course), bratwurst, the best regional candy, road trips, both urban Angle of and rural bicycling, the magic (and View danger) of thunderstorms and state parks. Mark was a regional editor Paul Dols during his time at the Press and currently lives in Duluth. Keith was the editor of the St. Croix Valley Press (now the Lowdown) and lives in Wausau, Wisconsin.

I suspect that I might be somewhat biased about the podcast because I enjoyed working with both Mark and Keith and have also occasionally accompanied them on their outings. Last summer Mark rode his bike out to Stillwater and we rolled downtown and then pedaled along the loop trail that circles across the St. Croix Crossing bridge into Wisconsin, back across the Historic Lift Bridge and then up the Brown’s Creek Trail, which connects to the Gateway Trail. Last week friends from Minneapolis pedaled out for a visit and we completed the same loop. One of them commented that the Brown’s Creek segment, with its sun dappled semi-shaded light, was arguably one of the most pleasant trail segments in the region.

I was present during one of the stories Mark and Keith recounted in their Magic of Thunderstorms podcast segment. It was during an early summer kayaking trip up on Lake Kabetogama in Voyageurs National Park. We had successfully paddled across the lake and were setting up our campsite on the northern shore when one of the loudest sounds I’ve ever heard in my life shocked us into attention. Lightning had struck a mature pine tree on a rocky point near our campsite, followed by rain. Even though it was raining, the tree burned from the inside for hours before it eventually cracked and fell into the water. I realize memory is fickle, but one of the details I still recall from this incident was the look of grave concern on the face of the experienced guide and outfitter who shuttled out provisions and fi rewood for us just before the thunderstorm hit. After looking up and seeing what was developing in the sky, he hurriedly dropped off our stuff and then gunned his powerboat back out across the big lake. One of the only other times I’ve seen a similar expression was on the face of the captain of a fishing boat on Lake Superior right before he instructed us to pull in our lines before speeding back to the harbor ahead of a quickly developing storm.

The lesson I’ve gleaned from these experiences and a host of other misadventures, is to never underestimate and always respect the power of nature.

Mark and Keith both have international travel experiences, so I believe that their podcast is not based on a strictly provincial point-of-view. Instead, it calls attention and elaborates on some of the world-class attractions, amenities, quirks and history that contribute to the unique character and quality of life in this part of the country. Not goodbye, just see you later

t feels like just yesterday that I was walking in for my first day at Press Publications and trying to hide my inner panic as Lead Editor Shannon Granholm placed a story list on my desk with seven items I had never heard of before. Now almost eight weeks later I am wondering where time has gone and feeling down about leaving all of the wonderful people that have accepted me and Caden’s helped me grow as a journalist.

Corner This was my fi rst real Caden experience Christiansen applying my collegiate studies in a professional environment, and at the beginning of the summer I struggled the fi rst few weeks with feelings of self doubt and uncertainty. I had only done a handful of work for the Bethel University newspaper, The Clarion, leading up to this internship and naturally, working with professionals in a new environment as a 20 year old felt a little intimidating.

But from day one, every single person I met at Press Publications welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like I belonged which helped ease that uncertainty very quickly.

My favorite part about this experience has been getting to meet and talk to so many people and hear their unique stories. To me, that is the best thing about journalism, and I have been really lucky to hear some incredible stories from local citizens and have done my best to tell those stories in meaningful ways. One of the many things I have learned from this internship is that not every story is going to be action packed, life or death, or unfathomable to the reader, and learning to take what is in front of me and write it in an engaging and truth-centered way is something I hope to continue working on.

One of the things that has made this experience so enjoyable for me is the support and encouragement I have gotten from community members, whether I have gotten the chance to speak with them or not. I remember pretty early on in the summer getting a direct message on Instagram from a community member saying how much they enjoyed reading one of my articles and being so ecstatic about it. It’s been incredible to hear feedback from colleagues and community members throughout the summer on articles I have written, and it truly does fuel the passion I have for this industry and the things it has to offer.

Now that I am coming to the end of this internship I am

defi nitely going to miss coming into the Press Publications office every week, seeing and working with all of the talented people who work so hard to present meaningful information to the public and getting the chance to connect with community members and hear their stories. But despite all of that, I am ready to take everything I have learned into the next phase of life. The rest of the summer I will be taking some much needed vacation time with my family, trying to win a state championship with my town ball team and getting ready for my junior year at Bethel University. This fall I am going to be on staff for The Clarion for the fi rst time as the sports editor and am very excited to apply everything I have learned this summer into that role.

I still have a lot of things to figure out in terms of my future and what I want to ultimately pursue after college, but this experience has provided some much needed guidance in helping me realize my passion for journalism. Every interview, team meeting and interaction I have had at Press Publications has fueled that fi re for me and I can not thank everyone enough for that.

It has been a pleasure getting to write for the local community and everyone in our coverage area and I miss it already.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR TCAAP thoughts Dear people: A large portion of the Ramsey County-Arden Hills struggle is “affordable housing.”

There are other issues. A 4/6/20 article provided an artist’s rendition of TCAAP looking like downtown Minneapolis. Hopefully, this isn’t what some are insisting be done. A 7/24/21 STrib article said “Ramsey County has numerous already degraded properties that could be used to address the housing crisis.” If so, where do these fit in? The 427-acre property contains much land occupied by water and marshland. Given the global warming crisis and recreation, can we assume that some aren’t planning “paving over” the entire 427 acres? Where is “traffic” supposed to enter? Not the residential area, we hope.

For “affordable housing,” there are numerous huge apartment complexes being built in northern suburbs. Condos and townhomes routinely come on market. We have affordable “trailer parks.” Are these ignored?

We COULD be building a “destination” location in Arden Hills, like Grand Avenue or downtown Stillwater; we COULD have a TCAAP “business district” featuring REAL “Mom & Pop” businesses, artists and creative people, sidewalk cafes, mini golf, perhaps a small “amusement center,” with no big boxes, no franchises, no businesses open past what area businesses practice. It could be a real “family values” site, just like Commissioner Nicole Frethem said, with all walking and bike traffic.

Since residents of surrounding suburbs are Ramsey County residents, can we assume our views and values would be given primary consideration? Is it unreasonable for those living here now to be concerned what might be forced on us; to want whatev-

er goes into TCAAP to “blend in” with the area; to not want 6-8-10-12 monster multistory buildings; to not want huge parking lots or ramps?

For miles around, most TCAAP neighbors have individual homes, small businesses and no monster multistory buildings. There are already several “business districts” close by on Lexington, Highway 96, downtown New Brighton, Highway 10, etc.

We don’t need TCAAP copying them. Let’s create something different, creative, beautiful, unique — something compatible with what exists.

Two years ago, she joined forces with Barnes, a Coast Guard officer. They are based in Miami.

Dallman-Weiss commented on their dramatic turnaround Sunday in a press release from US Sailing.

“In our fi rst race today, we didn’t happen to have the best fi rst beat and we weren’t able to come back after that,” Dallman-Weiss said, adding that hot, bright conditions were a factor.

In their second race, they had an “O flag” — a signal from the race commute to indicate that pumping the sails is allowed during racing — the whole time.

“And I had a fi re lit in me after the fi rst race,” she said. “In the second race, we worked really well together and it was a constant negotiation between working on height, speed, and being physical.”

The Olympic Games started July 23 and will end Aug. 8.

Additional townhomes coming to Edison at Rice Creek Shoreview Economic Development Coordinator Niki Hill approached the Shoreview City Council with a request to approved the planned unit development (PUD) development stage application for the Edison Phase 3 residential project during the July 19 Shoreview City Council meeting.

The current PUD was approved in April 2018; this application is an amendment proposing to change the zoning of Lot 4 from commercial to residential. The property is located in the Rice Creek Watershed District.

Hill said the applicant, KJPL, is pleased with the leasing and high demand with the first phase of its apartment and townhome development. Approximately 90% of the units have been leased. The developer immediately moved ahead with the second phase, which is currently under construction. Phase 3 would include 30 townhomes and three carriage home units.

“Lot 4 was originally planned for future commercial development, and KJPL feels that the retail market is weak, especially coming out of the pandemic, and that the site was

not ideal for commercial uses given the existence of the interchanges,” Hill said. “Additional housing opportunities is more beneficial to the community.”

According to Hill, the proposed amendment needs to satisfy certain objectives in order to be approved through the PUD process. Objectives met by this proposal include highquality building design, updated stormwater management, housing choice and land use compatibility.

“A traffic study was completed as part of the original PUD. The city reviewed the traffic impact study and found it to be complete as far as estimating the impacts of the development. The analysis also accounted for background traffic and growth in the area attributed to the build-out of the TCAAP property in Arden Hills. Based on this analysis, the change in development will not require any changes to existing traffic control scenarios for Rice Creek Parkway,” Hill said.

Hill explained that property owners within 350 feet of the development and relevant agencies were notified of the request, and no comments were received. City Engineer Tom Wesolowski said the city applied for a permit through

Mayor Sandy Martin asked whether affordable housing was discussed regarding the new townhome units.

“We have been in talks with KPJL about bringing additional affordable units because we have 18 existing units in the first two phases, and we are looking at adding four additional units with this phase,” Hill said.

Tom Simonson assistant city manager and community development director noted that affordable housing is not a part of the PUD application.

“This will be a separate process through the EDA. There's a tax abatement process we have to follow as well,” Simonson said. “We have a really good relationship with KPJL, and they've agreed to do additional affordable housing units.”

Martin asked if the applicant wanted to comment, and Elwyn Tinklenberg told the council that KJPL is delighted to be in Shoreview and that the townhomes have been extremely popular. He also added that they have a great relationship with the townhome association and said “we want to be a good

Frankie is following the same path as his older brother Louie, and is attending the St. Paul Seminary to become a priest. He does a lot of missionary work.

Joey, a 2017 Mounds View alumnus, graduated from Fordham University in Bronx, New York this spring and is currently taking a road trip across the country to visit all of the national parks before heading off to the University of San Francisco in the fall to get his Ph.D. in neuroscience.

Charlie, a 2019 graduate of Mounds View High School, is a junior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln studying computer science.

Annie graduated this spring from Mounds View High School.

• A catalytic converter was reported stolen overnight July 15-16 from a Mitsubishi Outlander Sport parked in a driveway in the 3300 block of Lexington Avenue N. • Two juvenile females were reported for theft July 16 after they each stole one container of vehicle coolant from Gas Plus in the 3400 block of Rice Street. The suspects were located in a nearby parked car, identified and released.

• A Mitchell, South Dakota, man reported an electric guitar stolen overnight July 16-17 from his auto while it was parked in the 5500 block of Albert Street.

• A Duluth man, 21, was arrested on a St. Louis County warrant at 1:31 a.m. July 17 in the 5900 block of Rice Creek Parkway after deputies responded to a dispute report between two persons in a parking lot. On identifying the involved parties, deputies discovered the male party had a felony warrant out for his arrest.

• A resident in the 5600 block of Turtle Lake Road at 5:05 a.m. July 18 reported being injured, after she was assaulted by her boyfriend while they were in Prior Lake. The complainant was transported to Regions Hospital for treatment of a neck injury. The case is under investigation.

• A Shoreview man reported more than $1,000 in fraudulent activity on his debit card July 18 in the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue N. The victim told deputies he thought he lost his debit card. The case is under investigation awaiting information on where the card was used.

Modern lake associations rally around environmental causes

Lake associations have been a part of Minnesota lake life for generations. Historically, they performed many functions, often recreational, safety-related and social. Whether founded recently or decades ago, however, addressing the threats of aquatic invasive species and other conservation work now dominate the focus of most lake advocacy organizations.

The White Bear Lake Conservation District (wblcd.org) was formed by the state Legislature in 1971 with powers not granted to ordinary lake associations, including the authority to enact ordinances. Board member Scott Costello describes the district as “set up as a governmental body with representatives from each city,” explaining that it levies its board of directors and around $100k in funding from the 5 municipalities surrounding the lake.

He reports the largest budget item annually is Eurasian watermilfoil (EWM) treatment. Other board activities include issuing permits for events, regulating multiuser docks, organizing cleanup events and mediating disputes between landowners.

The Lake Owasso Association (lakeowasso.org) was founded more than 70 years ago and, as stated on its website, “the primary significant activity of the LOA since 1955 is the control of aquatic plants, and safety associated with lake users.” The association

has been engaged in Eurasian watermilfoil control work since the invasive species was discovered in the lake in 2000. In 2020, the association spent over $25K on EWM control (almost 99% of that year’s budget). LOA is also involved with carp removal on the lake, which includes a free-admission carp fishing contest.

The Bald Eagle Area Association (baldeagleassn.org) is “dedicated to improving the water quality and usability of Bald Eagle Lake and the surrounding area.” Board President Bart Crockett reports that most of the organization’s work over the course of the year includes participating in boat launch inspections, helping to fund shoreline restoration work and working in coordination with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Rice Creek Watershed District to control aquatic invasive plants. It is also currently engaged in zebra mussel surveillance. In recent years, association members spearheaded efforts to obtain alum treatments to reduce phosphorus levels in the lake, which have subsequently improved water clarity.

The purpose of the Turtle Lake Association of Shoreview (TLAS) (turtlelakehomeowners.com) is “to preserve the native beauty of Turtle Lake and enhance outdoor experiences for current and future generations to enjoy.” TLAS also connects residents with social events, and has been active since 1961. Regarding the nonprofit organization’s recent work, a statement provided by association President Kevin Ousdigian reads: “TLAS spent

over $60,000 in 2020-21 on aquatic invasive species to preserve natives and enhance recreation for all. The prevention efforts included staffed boat inspections (500+ hours) and a boat cleaning station to avoid new infestations like Zebra Mussels or Starry Stonewort. The management has focused on minimizing milfoil, however TLAS also identified invasive Phragmites, treated, and eradicated the plant from numerous plots on the lake.”

News about aquatic invasive species (AIS) is becoming commonplace, andh newly discovered infestations are regularly making headlines. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has been combatting invasive plants, fish and invertebrates for decades across the state. But these days, the war on AIS is also being waged by local government entities and lake associations.

The DNR’s watercraft inspection program has become one of the most familiar means of preventing the spread of AIS. It began in 1992 and currently has around 92 inspectors working in the field, educating the public and watching for signs of “aquatic hitchhikers.” It also operates dozens of traveling decontamination units, where boats can be cleaned thoroughly.

According to information provided by the DNR, the state partners with local government units (LGUs) to provide many more inspections and decontaminations. As a result of this cooperation and support, there were around 850 inspectors in the field in 2020, who conducted more than 600,000 inspections around the state. There were also 54 active decontamination units, operated by 20 different LGUs. One such LGU is Ramsey County, which conducts education and watercraft inspections, and has one decontamination unit that travels to different public access sites. The self-contained unit holds up to 500 gallons of water, which are heated to AIS-killing temperatures (but safe for boats and equipment) before being applied to watercraft. The water is then captured and cycled through the machine repeatedly to avoid contaminating nearby waterbodies.

Justin Townsend, Ramsey County environmental specialist, says the county is also engaged in AIS early detection. One method is using eDNA technology to screen for zebra mussels in lakes. Water samples are sent to labs for analysis in the hope that DNA evidence of zebra mussels would be detected before the mussels themselves ever turn up.

In Washington County, the Washington Conservation District (WCD) performs AIS education, watercraft inspections and what it calls “early detection and rapid response.” The early detection component consists of frequent checks at all public access points in Washington County, as well as whole-lake surveys of Big Marine, Big Carnelian, and Square Lakes.

From the WCD website: “These surveys and visual inspections are an important tool for identifying AIS, because not every boat entering and leaving the water can be inspected.” If a new case of AIS turns up, WCD works with the DNR to “create a rapid response plan to inform the public and evaluate the extent of the infestation.”

Another component of the battle on AIS in Washington County is a grant program that funds projects designed to prevent AIS introductions or limit their spread. According to Washington County Planner II Maureen Hoffman, the county receives funds from the DNR’s aquatic invasive species prevention aid program, which it then distributes among successful applicants. “Typically, most applicants are lake associations.”

Awardees in 2019 included one watershed district, the St. Croix River Association and seven lake associations. According to the 2019 report, the Comfort Lake Forest Lake Watershed District performed watercraft inspections on Forest and Bone lakes, as well as control of flowering rush. Work performed by lake associations—including on Clear, Big Marine and Forest lakes—appears to have been largely directed at control of Eurasian watermilfoil.

Kevin Ousdigian, president of the Turtle Lake Association of Shoreview (TLAS), lives on the lake and has been very involved with AIS control efforts there. He reports that TLAS has spent more than $100,000 on invasive species management over the years, most of that work targeting Eurasian watermilfoil. TLAS has also worked hard in recent years to eradicate another invasive plant that was new to the lake (and Minnesota): non-native phragmites.

Ousdigian says that around four years ago, TLAS shifted more of its focus onto prevention of AIS. After battling weed infestations, it became clear that keeping invasive species out to begin with could be the better strategy. “What can we do to prevent or delay the introduction of invasives?”

In answering that question, they have been spending around $6,000 a year in order to have more frequent boat inspections at the access. Also, in June 2020 TLAS partnered with Ramsey County to install a CD3 cleaning station, the first and only one in the county. TLAS put up 75% of the funds (almost $24,000); the county covered the rest. It has a vacuum, compressed air, cleaning tools and the ability to track and report its usage.

Ousdigian said TLAS was also considering the installation of a video monitoring system at the access that would have issued audible reminders to boaters to clean boats before launching them, but Ramsey County would not allow it. They were hoping it would not only remind, but also deter boaters from launching irresponsibly.

Like other lake associations in the area, TLAS is serious about AIS control and remains vigilant.

Ousdigian says, “We’re working on management and prevention.”

Historic local sports moment: Shoreview pair in Olympics

Small-town newspapers don’t get to say this often, but there are two local athletes, Shoreview natives, wearing red, white and blue in the Olympic Games.

Lara Dallman-Weiss, a 2007 graduate of Mounds View High School, is a member of Team USA’s sailing team. She’s in women’s two-person dinghy with partner Nikole Barnes. They are based in Miami. Their races are slated for Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday, and finals on Tuesday.

Kyra Condie, a 2014 graduate of MVHS, is a member of Team USA’s climbing team, a new Olympic event this year. The climbers are based in Salt Lake City, Utah. They will compete on Wednesday, Aug. 4, and Friday, Aug. 6, in three disciplines: lead climbing, speed climbing and bouldering.

The Games, delayed one year due to the pandemic, are taking place July 23 through Aug. 8, with no fans, televised on NBC. (Shoreview Press has featured each of these athletes previously.)

Tri City Red edged Stillwater 7-6 in the semifinals. Ben Rosin pitched five innings and got the win, with Andrew Boeser finishing. Mezzenga was 3-for4, Diekoff knocked in runs with a single and sac fly, Connor Cherveny had an RBI single, and Leo Flieschhacker squeeze-bunted a run home.

With two chances to beat Stillwater once in the finals, Tri City Red cruised 8-2, getting a complete game by Mezzenga with nine strikeouts. Reid Thurston was 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs. In a five-run fourth inning,

the last three runs scored on squeeze bunts by Chervany and Kleppe (a throwing error sent the last run home).

The 16-team state tournament at St. Cloud will start with two days of pool play.

Tri City Red will face St. Cloud Chutes on Thursday, 1 p.m., then Grand Rapids at 3:30 p.m., and Rosemount on Friday at 1 p.m., all at Dick Putz Field. IRS warns taxpayers of Child Tax Credit scams The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Criminal Investigation Division is warning taxpayers about Child Tax Credit-related scams, which criminals may use to steal money and personal information.

While millions of American families started receiving the advance Child Tax Credit payments last week, criminals were already looking for innovative tactics to take advantage of unwitting victims. Taxpayers should be on the lookout for a variety of phone, email, text message and social media scams targeting families eligible for the credit. Any communication offering assistance

to sign up for the Child Tax Credit or to speed up the monthly payments is likely a scam. When receiving unsolicited calls or messages, taxpayers should not provide personal information, click on links or open attachments as this may lead to money loss, tax-related fraud and identity theft.

“As the country continues to grapple with the financial fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, scammers and criminals continue to evolve their efforts to steal the assistance the government provides from those that need it the most,” said Acting Special Agent In Charge Donald “Trey” Eakins, IRS Criminal Investigation.

“Be aware of those that try to steal the tax credit that you are entitled to, and if an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”

Although scammers constantly come up with new schemes to try and catch taxpayers off-guard, there are simple ways to identify if it is truly the IRS that is out.

In Shoreview, public works director Mark Maloney reports that water consumption is “significantly ahead of last year,” and “the highest extended water use since 2016.” When demand began to surge in May, the city began a proactive approach to conservation that leans on increased enforcement of its usual odd/even watering schedule.

“We’ve been fairly aggressive about reminding people of these restrictions.” As a result, there have already been some 400 warnings and citations issued this year.

Maloney says that on a typical winter day, water demand is around 1.8 million gallons.

Due to watering, summer usage is markedly higher, and demand lately has risen to nearly 6 million gallons.

If that continues to increase, it could be a problem: “We don’t have much room for error if demand gets much higher and stays there.”

Due to persistently dry precipitation patterns, over half of Minnesota is now experiencing severe drought.

According to data available from the U.S. drought monitor website, dry conditions across the state have been increasing since the middle of April. As of July 13, over 98 percent of Minnesota is in at least moderate drought.
