City takes green step The League of Minnesota Cities presented the city of Shoreview with the 2019 Sustainable City Award at the League’s annual conference in Duluth on June 27. The city was honored for its “Water Consumption and Groundwater Awareness Project.” Shoreview was also named a Step 5 city in the Minnesota GreenStep Cities program at the conference. “This award is a great achievement for Shoreview,” said Mayor Sandy Martin. “And by being part of the program, Shoreview and our peers are helping to make Minnesota more resilient for the future while also helping our cities thrive economically.” Shoreview’s “Water Consumption and Groundwater Awareness Project” was launched to test a shared community conservation portal that could lead to reduced water use. Through a partnership with WaterSmart Services, Shoreview residents can view their water use and compare their water use to similar households in the community. During the testing stage, more than 8 million gallons of water were saved by residents using the WaterSmart portal. The project incorporates several GreenStep Cities best practices, including development of an efficient water system, sustainable water consumption and adapting to changes in climate/community resilience. Shoreview achieved Step 4 again in 2019, advancing to become a Step 5 city in the Green Step Cities program. The Sustainable City Award is presented annually to recognize sustainability efforts by a city among those participating in the Minnesota GreenStep.

Moonstruck: On 50th anniversary of lunar landing, residents remember mankind’s giant leap BY ELIZABETH CALLEN STAFF WRITER

Saturday, July 20, marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. On that day, in 1969, the Lunar Module Eagle, which carried Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, made contact with the surface of the moon while Michael Collins piloted the command module, Columbia, in lunar orbit. As Armstrong stepped out onto the moon, he uttered what have since become immortal words: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Steve Emert, of White Bear Lake, was 15 at the time and “very excited” about the moon landing. He and his family, he said, “like many others, watched everything on CBS because we felt that Walter Cronkite, accompanied by astronaut Wally Schirra, was the best reporter for the Apollo program.” Digital video recorders didn’t exist in the 1960s, but tape recorders, at least, did. Emert said he tape-recorded the entire special leading up to the landing, in addition to the broadcast of the landing and the moonwalk itself. “I sure wish we had video recording capabilities in those days,” he added. Emert was one of approximately 600 million viewers who tuned into to watch Armstrong’s—and later Aldrin’s—moonwalk. “I remember the confusion created by CBS’s animation showing the (lunar module) landing before it actually did, and also Mr. Cronkite’s confusion about when exactly Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon because he said he was testing being able to get back up on the ladder.” SEE MOON LANDING, PAGE 22
