Lakeshore quilters guild plan anniversary celebration

Get ready for the Slice

Members of the St. Paul Clown Club joined in the festivities during the annual parade at last year’s Slice of Shoreview. Hundreds of area residents are expected to attend this year’s Slice of Shoreview festival July 22-24, at Island Lake County Park. Activities include the parade, carnival rides, music, food, Running of the Melon Balls, car show, a church service and more. See more information in the special section inside the Shoreview Press.

The Lakeshore Quilters Guild is calling all quilters and members of the community to attend its 14th anniversary party on Tuesday, July 26. The first meeting of the Lakeshore Quilters Guild was held in July 2008. Gail Carlson, of Shoreview, was interested in joining a guild and contacted the White Bear Lake Guild, whose leaders encouraged her to start one in Shoreview. She put a small ad in the Shoreview Press and 23 people attended the first meeting. Attendance almost doubled the next month. After just a few months of meeting at the Shoreview Library, the group needed more space and moved to Shepherd of the Hills Church in Shoreview. The group still meets there on the fourth Tuesday of each month. Currently, there are 75+ members. “Early in our existence, I heard a member remark that she’d never experienced a group come together so strong, so fast,” said original guild member Sharon Fiebiger of Shoreview. “We were brought together by a hobby, but I think the interpersonal support and encouragement we share keeps the guild both rooted and growing.” Board member Barbara Kuhlman of Lino Lakes went to the first organizational meeting and enjoys being part of a group of talented and amazing women. Art museum set to open this fall in Shoreview “This is not just a building, it’s an art building,” Kathie Cafesjian Baradaran said. The Cafesjian Art Trust (CAT) is opening a new art museum this fall at 4600 Churchill St. in Shoreview. Scholars, art lovers, students and the general public will be able to study and enjoy the private collection of art lover and philanthropist Gerard Cafesjian.

Among the approximately 3,000 pieces constituting the permanent collection of the new museum is studio glass by Dale Chihuly, Toots Zynsky, Stanislav Libensky and Jaroslava Brychtová, and modern and contemporary artwork by Arshile Gorky, Victor Vasarely, Georges Braque and many other world-renowned artists. CAT trustee Cafesjian Baradaran, Gerard’s daughter, said the building is being renovated on both the inside and the outside.

Fantastic Auto Repair at Fantastic Prices!

“Glass tiles are going on the outside of the building, which is really going to transform the look of the building,” the North Oaks resident said. “I want people to know immediately that they are not in Kansas anymore when they walk through the building.” The renovation plan, designed by Mohagan Hansen, creates a 20,000-square-foot space for the new museum. ANNIVERSARY: Guild bonds women together through the art of quilting FROM PAGE 1

“Historically, women have joined together in groups not only to share their talents and skills or assist one another in the completion of a quilt, but welcomed the opportunity to socialize and provide comfort and support to one another during difficult times of their lives,” Kuhlman said. “This remains true of the women who are members of Lakeshore Quilters.” Treasurer and original guild member Mickey Ratasky, of Little Canada, said she didn’t even know what a quilt guild was back in 2008. “I soon found out about a whole new world of like-minded women, learning new skills and trying on various volunteer committees to help this new entity grow and traveling to other parts of the country to see quilt shows and museums,” Ratasky said. “The best part for me was show and tell,

because I got to see and appreciate the various nooks and crannies of quilting.” The guild will have a booth at the Slice of Shoreview on July 22-24 selling handcrafted items such as table runners, placemats, aprons, bookmarks, pillow cases, baskets, etc. All proceeds are returned to the Guild. Guild President Sharon Peter said the Lakeshore Quilters Guild strives to provide a welcoming community for quilters to connect, create, and contribute through the art of quilting. “Our monthly meetings, workshops, and retreats all provide an opportunity for quilters to connect with one another, express our creativity and share our quilts with others,” the Roseville resident said. “As quilters, we spread love and beauty in the world, one quilt at a time.” For more information, go to

Having moved here eight years ago, Taste of Scandinavia has become our neighborhood place to gather for excellent food, service and conversation. What a treasure for all of us! And they truly persevered through the trying times of COVID-19. I had the honor and privilege to show my paintings there in June. I was shocked at all the paintings that were sold and the great comments from staff and customers. Hats off to the Taste of Scandinavia for being the community hub and support of this lovely community! P.S. Have you tried their new lemon white chocolate cookies? Yummy! Ginny Broden Shoreview

The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office reported the following selected incidents in Shoreview: • Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene of a hitand-run accident at the intersection of Lexington Avenue N. and Edgewater Avenue at 2:36 p.m. June 27. A St. Paul man was driving southbound on Lexington Avenue approaching County Road E when he was struck on the rear passenger side bumper by a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed while passing on the shoulder of the road. The victim managed to retrieve the license plate number of the fleeing vehicle, after which deputies conducted some computer research on the license number and discovered that the vehicle was an unreported vehicle stolen out of Roseville. • A catalytic converter was reported stolen June 28 from a Mitsubishi Outlander while it was parked during the day in a lot in the 3900 block of Victoria Street. • A resident in the 1000 block of Amble Drive on June 28 reported fraudulent activity on her banking account, when she fell victim to a phishing scam. After she responded to a phishing text alert, she received a phone call in which the scammer claimed to be from the bank. When the scammer asked for a second payment of $2,000, the victim recognized the transactions to all be a scam. The bank is working with the victim to restore the $500 she lost in the first payment request, and deputies gave her the case number to aid in the process. • A resident in the 1000 block of Gramsie Road reported a burglary sometime between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. June 28, during which multiple garages and vehicles were broken into. An investigation has started as deputies await surveillance video footage and further information

from apartment management on more victims involved in the incident. • A Shoreview woman, 38, was arrested at 1:12 a.m. June 29 near the intersection of County Road J and Rice Creek Parkway following a hit-and-run accident with injuries, after deputies arriving at the scene discovered through witnesses that the driver who hit the other vehicles was intoxicated. Witnesses recovered the license plate number of the vehicle, and the driver’s neighbor also called 911. The intoxicated driver was charged and has a date in Ramsey County District Court. • Deputies responded to a complaint of a cat at large on the complainant’s property in the 5900 block of Lexington Avenue N. June 29, as part of an ongoing issue. The address of the cat was not given, but deputies were given an important clue — that the cat lived next door to a brown house on the complainant’s street. On arrival at the scene, however, deputies observed that all of the houses on that strip were brown. • A Shoreview man, 60, was arrested for domestic assault July 1 following a family dispute that had occurred at 10:39 p.m. June 30 in the 4100 block of Lexington Avenue N., during which he also violated an order for protection (OFP). His victim was seen at St. John’s Hospital in Maplewood, while he was seen at the law enforcement center when deputies caught up with him the following day. Deputies had issued a Keep Our Polices Safe (KOPS) alert on him and finally conducted a traffic stop on Rice Street at I-694 to take him into custody. • An abandoned bicycle was reported found July 2 behind an electrical box in the area of Rice Creek Parkway and Prairie Ridge Drive. When deputies conducted a National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database check,

they discovered the bike to have been reported stolen out of Pearland, Texas. The bike was taken into property for safekeeping. • A St. Paul man, 42, was cited July 4 at the intersection of Hodgson Road and Snail Lake Road for driving after suspension, failure to provide proof of insurance and failure to drive with due care, after he ran a red light and struck another vehicle. A passenger in that vehicle was injured and transported to hospital. • A black, flowered tote bag was reported found July 5 in the roadway in Island Lake Park in the 3600 block of Victoria Street N. As no identifiable information was inside, the item was placed into property at the station. • Deputies assisted the St. Paul Police Department July 5 in locating and apprehending a suspect wanted for assault in St. Paul. The suspect was handed over to St. Paul police and booked for second-degree assault. Loretta Harding

Mass shootings symptom of a deeper problem

M

ASS SHOOTINGS ARE on the increase. They are tragic and devastating. Families and children are fearful and law enforcement is not able to prevent them or reduce the incidence of these merciless killings.

I don’t see gun control, confiscation or more regulations as the only answer to reducing this growing problem. It’s a much, much deeper problem in our society and I think we’ve been skirting the root cause. What creates so much anger that provokes young men to walk into a school and kill innocent children and teachers? What creates so much hatred that provokes a person to walk into a place of worship and kill innocent people who only want to exercise their freedom of religion, or to kill people simply because of the color skin or sexual orientation? About the ofItheir fear for our country. As an American, democratic society, I think we have lost Town our way. We have broken homes, children Gene Johnson not being raised by parents, poverty, poor educational systems, and gangs. Violence is everywhere—on television, in the movies, on the Internet, in video games, on social media and in reallife news programs. Today there is a disrespect for law and order, for police, for teachers, for employers, for parents and for each other. We have lost many of the fundamentals of civil life. Perhaps it’s partly the decline in church attendance that has led to this, or parents no longer teaching basic manners and politeness to children. Worse, many parents may also lack these attributes. The moral fabric of this country seems to be coming apart. Many people who feel isolated, marginalized and insignificant are susceptible to dangerous messages found on social media and the Internet. Unless we begin to make progress solving these deeper problems of our society, I don’t see mass shootings going away. Our society, beginning with children, has lost respect for the responsibility of being parents. We have lost some of the basic fundamentals of civility and rules for living that Moses brought down from Mount Sinai known as the Ten Commandments. Today many pastors through their sermon communication are finding it difficult to challenge areas of immorality and ethics in our society. There is fear of reprisal, fear that their church won’t grow or it will lose financially. People are trying to rewrite the Constitution. In the first place, they should read it and understand it. Our government and our elected representatives are supposed to serve the people, not concentrate on personal financial gain. What information can you trust today? The Bible is our manufacturer’s handbook. It is God-inspired word, but throughout history sinful people have turned against God. They have lost what the words “Love your neighbor as yourself ” mean. Our nation is on the road to self-destruction and we cannot continue on this path. If we don’t make changes, we will continue to lose freedoms that we have fought so hard to protect. You can make a difference. Be an encourager. Invite people to church and help them be involved. Read the Bible or attend a Bible study. You may discover that the society written about and condemned in the Bible is very similar to our society today. Check it out!

Hail Storms

Recently I wrote a column regarding storm damage from the recent storms. I was corrected about the statement that you have 2 years to fix your home. Many insurance companies have different guidelines. The company I spoke with said they had a 2 year window. Be sure to read the fine print on your insurance policy and use a year-round local contractor to complete your roofing project. Carter Johnson is publisher of Press Publications.

The executive director of the new CAT Museum, Andy Schlauch, was formerly the executive director of the Chihuly Collection in St. Petersburg, Florida. Schlauch will curate exhibits, provide tours and oversee programming. “I want people in the community to feel they can engage with us, explore our exhibits — including this magnificent collection of studio glass — and hopefully understand that art is exciting,” Schlauch said. “We see ourselves as educators, bringing the art to the community in a more personal setting.” The inaugural exhibit is planned to showcase the artwork of Dale Chihuly and highlight the 30-year friendship between Gerard and Chihuly. “They kept track of all of their correspondence and kept it over the years, so we’ll be able to have a large display of that,” Schlauch said. The second exhibit, Highlights of the Cafesjian Art Trust Museum Collection, will feature works MDAN ads that span mediums and styles, including paintings, sculptures and decorative art objects from the permanent collection. “The CAT’s special, intimate space offers an opportunity where visitors can echo Gerard Cafesjian’s own journey, discovering the beauty of modern and contemporary art and especially studio art glass, and engaging with the artist and work in a larger context,” Cafesjian Baradaran said. “I’m so proud we’ve finally built this collection the home it deserves and look forward to sharing it with everyone.”

Ex-Mustangs were standouts in college spring sports BY BRUCE STRAND SPORTS WRITER

A host of Mounds View High School graduates had strong seasons in college sports this spring. Here’s a report. Will Rogers, Arizona State baseball freshman baseball player, was the Sun Devils’ starting left-fielder, and hit .299 (50-for-167) with nine home runs, 17 doubles, and one triple. ASU had a 26-32 record, 13-17 in the Pacific 12 Conference. Rogers, whose prime position is catcher, was regarded as Minnesota’s No. 1 prospect for the class of 2021. He made three relief pitching appearances with ASU, throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings, with two strikeouts. Rogers was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 17th round in 2021 but did not sign. Brett Bateman, University of Minnesota sophomore center fielder, was one of the bright spots on a Gopher team that finished 16-36. The only player to start all 52 games, Bateman hit .312, second-high on the team, led with 67 hits, and tied for the most runs, 39. He had seven doubles, two triples, and 23 walks, and was

21-for-28 stealing baes. In the outfield, he made 123 putouts and four assists while committing four errors. In his freshman year, Bateman batted .250 and scored 12 runs in 26 games. Julia Fixsen, Virginia Tech junior pole vaulter, placed fifth in the NCAA meet with a vault of 14 feet, 5 1/4 inches. (The champion, Gabriela Leon of Louisville, went 15-1.) Fixsen placed second in the Atlantic Coast Conference meet with 14 feet, 3/4 inch. The Minnesota high school record (13-9) spent her first two college seasons at Georgia, then transferred due to a coaching change. She placed third in the NCAA with Georgia last year, clearing 13-71/2. Calvin Ciganik, a state champion pole vaulter for the Mustangs, capped his collegiate career at the U.S Air Force Academy. Season highlights were placing third in the Air Force Collegiate Open with 15-5, sixth in the Mountain West Indoor Conference meet with 15-3, second in Colorado’s invitational with 15-5, and fifth in his final event, the Air Force Twilight Open, with 15-1. Ciganik’s career best was 16 feet, 3/4 inch in 2021 which placed fourth in the Twilight Invitational. In high

school, Ciganik won state with 15-0 as a sophomore and cleared 15-8 and 15-6 as a senior, when he had a bad section meet and didn’t advance to state. Joel Smith, senior on the Bethel track team, placed fourth in the 400 meter hurdles in the NCAA Division III meet May 26-28 in Geneva, Ohio, with a finals time of 52.32 seconds, and was the MIAC champion (52.32) on May 14. Josh Sampson, a sophomore, placed third in the MIAC 110 high hurdles with 14.70. Smith and Sampson ran the third and anchor legs, respectively, on Bethel’s 4x400 relay that won the MIAC title (3:15.98) and placed eighth at nationals (3:13.80). Ty Koehn, Bethel senior pitcher/ outfielder, was one of leaders of the Royals’ MIAC baseball champions. The 6-foot-1 left-hander posted a 5-0 record and 2.64 earned-runaverage in 47 2/3 innings, striking out 57. He batted .338 in 43 games with two homers, 10 doubles, 35 runs-batted-in, and

Tri-City Red is hosting district tourney as top seed BY BRUCE STRAND SPORTS WRITER

The Tri-City Red baseball team, composed of Mounds View players, is hosting the American Legion District 4 tournament as the No. 1 seed this week. TCR (15-9) was to open against the winner of Tri-City Maroon vs. Lino Lakes, a play-in game, on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Action will continue through Saturday, when the championship game is scheduled. Leo Fleischaker is the ace pitcher and one of the top hitters. Others having strong seasons are Connor Chervaney, shortstop and leadoff hitter; Tanner Hoermann, third baseman, who has three home runs; and

Parker Holmboe, right fielder, who’s hitting around .320. The team’s two “super seniors” (2021 graduates still eligible) are also leaders: second baseman Cooper Kleppe and pitcher Cole Hinkel, who plays for UW-Eau Claire. Tri-City Red is coached by Nik Anderson (also the high school coach), assisted by Bo Lovdahl. Three standouts on the Mustangs high school team, which finished 16-9, are not playing for the Legion team. Blake Guerin, who has signed with Iowa, is playing in an Illinois collegiate league. Brandon Goldman joined a town team with some of his future St. Olaf teammates. Drew Rogers, sophomore catcher, is playing in California.

28 runs. Bethel was MIAC regular season and playoff champions. The Royals finished 35-11 and won twice in the regionals before losing twice. Koehn was among 30 players named to the all-MIAC baseball team. Jenna Peschel, St. Olaf sophomore pitcher and outfielder, was one of 38 players named to the all-MIAC softball team. Peschel batted .356 with three home runs, 22 runs-battedin, and 21 runs. She had a 6-0 pitching record and 1.94 ERA in 47 innings for the Oles, who were 18-4 in the MIAC and 24-18 overall. Nick Sharma, Minnesota State (Mankato) sophomore sprinter, placed fifth in the 100 meter dash (10.75) in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference meet in May. He ran the third leg on their first-place 4x100 team (41.25). If this report missed anyone, feel free to contact the reporter at bruce.a.strand@gmail.com. Sports Writer Bruce Strand can be reached by emailing news@presspubs. com or calling 651-407-1200.

The Sunday matinee at 1 p.m. July 31, will have an ASL/AD interpreter. Neighbor Kirk has taken to using the weed whacker for “mowing” the lawn. Others use the mower to blow the dust around. Those with sprinkler systems seem to be faring the best with our lack of rain. I’m about 6 inches drier Your newspaper has agreed to participate in the Minnesota Display Ad Network program running than normal since Juneby 1. No doubt the Metro area as a whole is suffering a drought with us (in the Northeast Metro) bearing the brunt ofnewspathe lack of rain. AsThe long as the jet stream remains to our north, we’ll continue to be on these ads in the main news section of your newspaper (not the classified section of your Minnesota the dry side. All it would take is for the jet stream to move south by about 100 miles and we would be “enjoying” per). At times, advertisers may request a specific section. However, theadecision is ultimately up to wetter summer. For now, hot and dry. Nature note: I’ve noticed monarchs visiting milkweed. I’ll be looking for each newspaper. Ads may need to be decreased/increased slightly in size to set fit ofyour sizes.of spotting of new ducklings on Peppertree Pond. lens. They may also fight the most-likely cause of vision loss when you’re older: age-related macular degeneration (AMD). “It’s always best to get the nutrients we know help vision from foods,” says Elizabeth J. Johnson, PhD. She’s a research scientist and associate professor at Tufts University in Boston. Powerhouse foods for healthy eyes: • Spinach and Kale • Grapefruit, Strawberries, and Brussels Sprouts • Seeds, Nuts, and Wheat Germ • Turkey, Oysters, and Crab • Salmon, Sardines, and Herring • Carrots, Pumpkin, and Sweet Potato

Supplements for Eye Health as You Age

• Glaucoma, damage to the optic nerve, often with increased eye pressure. • Age-related macular degeneration, which gradually affects central vision. Other eye conditions, such as refractive errors, which happen when the shape of your eye doesn’t bend light correctly, are common problems easily corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or laser surgery. An estimated 11 million Americans aged 12 years and older could see better if they used corrective lenses, or eye surgery, if appropriate.

Nine ways you can help protect your vision

1. Get regular comprehensive dilated eye exams. 2. Know your family’s eye health history. 3. Eat right to protect your sight. Maintain

a healthy weight. 4. Wear protective eyewear when playing sports or doing activities around the home, such as painting, yard work, and home repairs. 5. Quit smoking or never start. 6. Wear sunglasses that block 99 percent-100 percent of ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. 7. Wash your hands before taking out your contacts and cleanse your contact lenses properly to avoid infection. 8. Practice workplace eye safety.

Good Foods for Eye Health (from WebMD Archives) Vitamins C and E, zinc, lutein, zeaxanthin, and omega-3 fatty acids all play a role in eye health. They can help prevent cataracts, clouding of your eye

If you have or are at risk for agerelated macular degeneration (AMD) there are vitamin supplements that may help slow it or keep it from getting worse. They are called AREDS formula supplements, after the Age-Related Eye Disease Studies that tested and fine-tuned the formula. The supplements combine high doses of most of the nutrients in the foods mentioned earlier. The newest version, called AREDS 2, is especially good if you get very little lutein and zeaxanthin. It’s also safe if you’re a smoker or recently quit, because it doesn’t have beta carotene in it. In very high doses, beta carotene can raise your chances of getting lung cancer. You can buy AREDS 2 formula supplements over the counter, but talk to your eye doctor first. Some people shouldn’t take high doses of antioxidants.

aking care of your eyes can be a priority just like healthy eating and physical activity. To keep your eyes healthy, get a comprehensive dilated eye exam: an eye care professional will use drops to widen the pupils to check for common vision problems and eye diseases. It’s the best way to find out if you need glasses or contacts, or are in the early stages of any eye-related diseases. Visit an eye care professional if you have • Decreased vision. • Eye pain. • Drainage or redness of the eye. • Double vision. • Diabetes. • Floaters (tiny specks that appear to float before your eyes). • Circles (halos) around light sources; or • If you see flashes of light. Taking care of your eyes also may benefit your overall health. People with vision problems are more likely than those with good vision to have diabetes, poor hearing, heart problems, high blood pressure, lower back pain and strokes, as well as have increased risk for falls, injury and depression. Among people aged 65 and older, 54.2 percent of those who are blind and 41.7 percent of those with impaired vision say their overall health is fair or poor. Just 21.5 percent of older Americans without vision problems reported fair to poor health. Some eye conditions can cause vision loss and even blindness. These include: • Cataracts, a clouding of the eye. • Diabetic retinopathy, which causes damage to the blood vessels in the back of the eye.
