SHOREVIEW — A Lino Lakes resident was recognized during a Ramsey County Sheriff’s award ceremony for saving a woman’s life during a car fi re. “This is a special day (as is) any time that we get the chance to celebrate promotions and, in this case, to recognize a civilian, a non-employee of our Sheriff’s Office, who has done some great work on behalf of public safety,” said Sheriff Jack Serier as he opened the ceremony June 12. John Latcham, who has lived in Lino Lakes for eight years with his family, works at 3 Diamond Corporation in Shoreview. On Feb. 10 Ramsey County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a car fire off of County Road E in Shoreview. That morning, Latcham happened to be outside when he noticed smoke coming from across the street. “I saw some smoke and I didn’t think anything of it. I thought they must be having a morning barbecue, which I thought didn’t make sense. I jogged out into the street, jumped up into the air and I could make out the outline of the frame of a car,” Latcham recalled. “I turned to go get my fire extinguisher but then I thought if there was someone in there, I might

not have time to get it. I did a full-on sprint across the road, down the railroad tracks, up the ravine and as soon as I got to the top I could see a woman in there.” As Latcham was running toward the car, he was shouting at the

woman to get out. “She was conscious, but she was not thinking clearly; she was irrational, disoriented and I thought maybe she bumped her head,” he said.

WHITE BEAR LAKE — Much to the city’s surprise, the Iowa-based grocery giant that planned to build at Tower Crossings has decided the project is too expensive. City Development Director Anne Kane said she received a call from Hy-Vee representative Phil Hoey indicating they will not proceed with the project on Centerville Road. “He cited extraordinary project costs with site grading, the two-story design with smaller sales floor, high land costs to acquire the White Oak retail center and right of way improvements,” Kane said. “They are also in a lawsuit with Walgreen’s regarding a private land use restriction prohibiting pharmacy uses.” The Hy-Vee spokesman told Kane the company is committed to serving the White Bear market and found the site to be highly desirable; however, in the end, the construction bids were coming in substantially higher than projected and they’re just not able to justify the costs for the 70,000-square-foot store, fitness center, restaurant and pharmacy. “There wasn’t one deal or one facet that

Spring blooms bring summer fruit to market BY SARA MARIE MOORE EDITOR

Apricots, apples, cherries, berries, kiwi, plums, peaches and pears create a summertime color palette in one Vadnais Heights yard. About 30 years ago, Kent Dahl began planting fruit trees unique to Minnesota as a hobby. Asian pears and Arctic kiwi are among the more exotic fruits he has nurtured over the years. He also has about half a dozen varieties of plums and nearly a dozen varieties of pears and apples. There are also apricot, peach, nectarine and hazelnut trees. There are about half a dozen varieties of cherry trees. “They are hard to grow in Minnesota,” Kent noted. There are also

blueberry, strawberry, raspberry and black raspberry patches among the fruit trees. For locals interested in trying their hand at growing fruits uncommon in Minnesota yards, Kent recommends the Alderman plum as a starter. Gardeners will also have to be prepared to deal with animals and bugs, he said. He handpicks plum bugs off his trees and puts fencing around others. Kent has grown some apple trees from seed and also tried his hand successfully at grafting. When one of his apple trees grown from seed blew over in the wind about a decade ago, it began producing flat-tasting apples. So, he grafted in several different apple branches. “There are three to four different types of apples on this tree,” Kent

said, while standing beneath the tree’s limbs. He screwed back together another apple tree that had been split by a fallen tree. “It was a really tasty apple, so I tried to save it,” he noted. Kent has forgotten the name of one of his other apple varieties but it has always been the favorite of those who have tasted his apples. He calls it the “unknown” apple. “People say, ‘That’s my favorite apple,’ and I can’t give it a name,” he remarked. After Kent married Susan Dahl in 2012, she started selling the fruit from his trees at local farmers markets.
