Local vet meets urgent need with stand-alone clinic

Local veterinarian Dr. Liz Sitter is hoping she can fill a need in the north metro.

The Marine on St. Croix resident recently opened Aurora Urgent Veterinary Clinic in White Bear Lake, which is likely the first stand-alone pet urgent care in the Twin Cities.

“There’s a high demand. It is hard to get into your regular vet, and a lot of times you have to wait for weeks, and the emergency clinics are at capacity,” Sitter explained. “I saw a big need in the market for urgent care. It’s kind of a newer thing.”

Before the pandemic, general practices could generally carve out time for both regular visits in addition to urgent care, but now there are so many pets in the market that they are having a tough time accommodating them all. Some emergency clinics in

Dairy Queen employee serves smiles and ice cream

Carol Levy continues to work a variety of tasks at the Shoreview Dairy Queen. The Dairy Queen, located on Hodgson Road, has been open for 51 years.

Levy has been working there for 50 of them.

“I just came in here for a part-time job because I got laid off my other job,” said Levy, “and I just stayed.

I never left because there are so many nice people here.”

Currently, Levy resides in Shoreview with her son, his wife, grandson, granddaughter and greatgranddaughter. She grew up in the east side of St. Paul with her parents and three older brothers at the time.

Five more brothers joined the family after they moved to the Twin Cities from Browerville, Minnesota.

From there, Levy attended St. Paul Mechanic Arts and Johnson Senior High School. Her husband,

Students have good outcome at SkillsUSA conference

Mounds View students brought home 15 medals from the 2024 SkillsUSA Minnesota State Leadership and Skills Conference. The annual conference is a showcase of career and technical education (CTE) students who competed in various trade, technical and leadership events.

All contests are run by SkillsUSA with the help of industry, trade associations, labor organizations and testing competencies set by industry.

The top students received gold, silver and bronze medallions. Many also received prizes such as tools of their trade and scholarships to further their careers and education.

Emily Lou, a junior at Mounds View High School, has earned the bronze-level Presidential Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) through SkillsUSA. Lou documented over 100 hours of community service during the last 12 months.

SkillsUSA is a certifying organization that participates in the national PVSA program, which is administered by AmeriCorps Emily Lou and Point of Light Foundation.

AURORA CLINIC: Sees pets in a timely fashion, more cost effective FROM PAGE 1

the Twin Cities also provide urgent care, but as far as Sitter knows, she is the first vet to open a stand-alone urgent care.

Sitter, who is originally from New Jersey, went to vet school in Oklahoma. She moved to Minnesota about 11 years ago to be close to her sister. She has been in general practice for 10 years; she formerly worked at Stillwater Veterinary Clinic and Century Animal Clinic in Maplewood.

It was that need she saw while working in general practice that prompted her to open Aurora Urgent Care.

“After the pandemic, I just saw we were turning so many people away every day, especially new clients that didn’t have a clinic, because we were barely being able to fit our current clients,” Sitter recalled. “I thought it really stunk that their only option was the emergency clinic, which is really expensive, and you have to wait for hours and hours.”

The urgent care offers same-day appointments only from Monday through Friday. It offers in-house blood work and diagnostics, imaging via X-rays and ultrasounds, minor surgeries, end-of-life care and an in-house pharmacy.

The clinic does not offer vaccinations or elective procedures, but can help when it comes to things like vomiting or diarrhea, coughing or sneezing, minor wounds, skin rashes and more. (See pullout box for more information.)

The clinic is designed to feel more like a home, rather than a pet hospital.

“I wanted a warm, welcoming, homey atmosphere and not so sterile and ‘doctory,’” she explained. “I wanted it to look a bit more like a house versus a hospital.”

For clients who are forced to make one of the toughest decisions they will ever have to make, they will find a room that looks just like a living room, rather than a doctor’s office. They can sit on a couch, or the floor with their pup while they lay on a comfortable bed rather than a cold metal table.

In addition to the health of the pets, Sitter also cares about the health of her staff.

“A lot of people in this field struggle with mental health issues,” she said. “One thing I wanted to do is to open a space that has a positive company culture, (values) lots of open communication and puts staff first.” She added, “I want to help as

many pets get seen in a timely, more cost-effective matter, but also while balancing and maintaining like mental health of the staff.”

Dr. Sitter currently has two technicians, Riley Jorissen and Anny Yang. Jorissen, of Fridley, has been in the field for 26 years, 14 of those serving as a certified veterinary technician.

“During COVID, the veterinary field changed a lot; it changed for the worse. A lot of technicians are leaving the field,” she explained. Jorissen left the field herself for a year and was trying to figure out what she was going to do next. She stumbled across what Dr. Sitter was doing and applied to be the receptionist.

“During the interview, I was impressed with her wanting to keep everything local and just helping the people around us,” Jorissen explained. “I was excited to work with Dr. Liz because she’s offering something that is so new to this field. I am super excited to like be at the beginning of this. Twentysix years in this field, and this is probably the coolest thing I’ve done.”

Yang, of St. Paul, has been in the field for 3 1/2 years. She said she is looking forward to the

One step closer to my master’s, a first-year recap

A

little bit over a year ago I made the, somewhat impulsive, decision to attend graduate school.

It was something I had thought about over the course of my junior and senior year of my undergraduate program, but I never really committed to it. It wasn’t until January of my senior year that I got serious about making the choice to continue my education.

I held off meeting with the director of graduate studies till February. After that meeting, I began to stress a bit because I was two or three months behind other applicants. I went into panic mode. All the professors I needed a letter of recommendation from were on sabbatical for that year, which meant contacting them was nearly impossible. But thankfully, they checked their email the week I reached out to them. One of my professors even helped me write my admissions Madeline’s statement.

Ultimately, I got accepted into the Mail University of St. Thomas’s Creative and Publishing program three Madeline Dolby Writing weeks after I applied. When I received the acceptance email from the director, I was a bit horrified and excited. Was I ready to balance a full-time job and being a full-time graduate student?

The first semester of graduate school was an adjustment. I was not used to having to juggle so many things at once. I had to try to balance work, school, a social life and paying off my student loans. During my undergrad, I was used to having minimal homework and free weekends to hang out with my friends. That first semester of graduate school was a reality check for me.

It took me about a good two months to get into a routine of going to work, going to class and finding time to do the things I enjoy. Once I found my routine it was easy to enjoy life again. I made friends in my classes, settled into my new job and managed to stay in contact with all my college friends.

My second semester was the hardest to adjust to.

After spending half of December and all of January off, I was once again wondering why I decided to go back to school. What if I didn’t get a job in publishing?

What if I had to move to London, or New York or Los Angeles? I do not have the finances to move to any of those places. But I ignored all those ‘what ifs’ and went into second semester with the same mindset I did in September—I am going to get my master’s and do great things.

My second semester went significantly better. I knew the type of coursework to expect and how to balance my homework load. The classes I took were things I was interested in and liked talking about. A few of my friends from the previous semester were in my classes again, which made it more enjoyable.

After completing my first year of graduate school, I have learned a lot about myself. I learned that I cannot wait to do my homework assignments till the very last minute, it is okay to ask questions and for help and it is okay to take a break.

I am excited to begin my second year of graduate school, but I am very thankful that I do not have to step back on campus for a good three months.

am so excited that it is starting to warm up and car show season is just around the corner.

Bernice, our 1973 Volkswagen Kombi, is out of hibernation and ready to go. This might be the earliest I can remember starting her up thanks to the warm temps.

Recently, Shannon’s my husband Shenanigans Patrick and I, along with Shannon our son Royce, went on an Granholm approximately 85-mile cruise.

It was the first-ever St. Croix Valley Poker Run. VWs of all models and years were invited to participate. The run began in Prescott, Wisconsin on a perfect, 80-degree day and traveled to Hudson, Dresser, Scandia and finished in Stillwater.

At every stop, cruisers drew a card and the three cars with the best poker hand won prizes.

We didn’t win, but we had an absolute blast. The day could not have been more perfect, and by some miracle, nobody broke down.

It was a little nerve-wrecking to go on such a long cruise for our first trip of the season

because that’s usually when you find out all the things you need to fix. The first time we started Bernice up a week or two before the cruise, she died in the driveway. Then while my husband was trying to figure out why she died, one of the hinges on the rear hatch broke off.

We had to push her back into the garage, and my husband got to work. Thankfully, he was able to get her going and back in riding shape before the event.

Once May rolls around, I’m sure we will be at a car show multiple times a month. We always look forward to the shows at Black Smith Lounge in Hugo, and plan to travel to shows in the Quad area, as well as Stillwater, North St. Paul and many more.

This June, we plan to attend an all-Volkswagen show called the Bug-In in St. Louis Park.

Bernice is not old enough to attend Back to the 50s at the State Fairgrounds, but Patrick plans to bring his 1954 Hudson Super Jet. I plan to drive my grandpa’s1955 red Chevy pickup.

We registered it in his honor.

This June we are also planning to attend a Back to the 80s show at Blacksmith Lounge.

Patrick has his work cut out for him though, as he gets a 1984 Blazer back and running again.

It’s in rough shape, but so was

Bernice. If anyone can do it, he can. I think we are going to name her “Big Bertha.”

Summer is not just car show season, but parade season. We hope to do the Good Neighbor Days Parade in Hugo, Manitou Days Parade in White Bear Lake and Blue Heron Days parade in Lino Lakes.

If you see us out and about, or in a parade, be sure to wave or offer a peace sign.

SCHOOL BOARD SNIPPETS

The city moves beyond No Mow May, promotes Yards in Bloom

This year, the city of Shoreview is promoting a variety of yard care practices to benefit water quality and pollinators.

Residents are encouraged to find one or more practices that work for them and their yards.

The intent of moving beyond the No Mow May movement is to promote a broader array of practices that are beneficial over a longer period of time. Mowing less frequently is beneficial for lawns and pollinators, but not mowing for an extended period of time can be harmful to your grass. Residents should try to increase the height of their mower blade and only mow when needed. The city’s lawn height requirement to not exceed 9 inches will remain in effect.

In addition to mowing practices, there are many other ways to promote water quality and support pollinators in yards. Residents can try to incorporate native plants into landscaping. These can include grasses, flowers, shrubs and trees and can reduce or eliminate the use of pesticides and herbicides.

Adopt a park in time for summer

Parks add to Shoreview’s quality of life and are utilized by many residents. Volunteer today and get involved in your community to help keep the parks clean and safe.

Volunteers will be asked to pick up litter and report any concerns noticed at a park.

Lake Johanna Fire collects donations

The Lake Johanna Fire Department will be collecting nonperishable food for the Ralph Reeder Food Shelf. The department has received around 2,641 pounds so far.

Established in 1983, the Ralph Reeder Food Shelf and Community Resource Center is a Community Education Program of the Mounds View Public School District that

provides food, basic needs and connections to other services for any school district family and any low-income, food-insecure neighbor requesting assistance.

The Lake Johanna Fire Department is located at 5545 Lexington Ave., Shoreview.

Summer registration opens to residents

Registration for summer programs and activities will open for Shoreview residents at 8 a.m. Tuesday, May 7. Annual community center members will be able to register for summer programs on Thursday, May 9, and the general public can register starting on Friday, May 10.

Green Community Award nominations open

Each year businesses and residents are recognized with the green community awards from the Shoreview Environmental Quality Committee. Awards are given to those who take steps to improve water quality, install renewable energy or use ecofriendly practices.

• Sunnyside Elementary nutrition services staff have received an honorable mention award by the Minnesota Department of Education as part of the “Say Yes to School Meals” photo contest. They submitted a photo of a strawberry yogurt parfait with granola, a student favorite.

• The northeast Metro Intermediate School District 916 budget for the 2025-2026 will be $467,100. Mounds View schools will receive $57,514, their respective portion of the budget.

The proportional share is a blended rate that includes the district’s net tax capacity and the district’s enrollment.

• Additional funds will be added to the Community Education budget. There will be an increase in community service revenues of $1.3 million and an increase in community education services expenses of $886,079. These prices consider salaries and benefits. The Community Education budget includes summer programs and activities as well as before- and after-school programs.

• The district’s public relations department provided an update on Early Childhood programs and kindergarten outreach efforts. Data gathered by the survey company Morris Leatherman shows that early education and kindergarten programs were popular among families within the Mounds View Schools District.

Currently, there are 730 students participating in Early Childhood

programs. Roughly 50% of students entering the district’s kindergarten programs have spent time in an early childhood program. Currently, the district holds early childhood summer classes and special events as well as kindergarten kick-off events that can take place in February. In the summer, the district holds “Popsicles with the Principal” and uses social media to promote these events. To reach out to more families, the district will be utilizing Paws and Shelly. Paws is the mascot for Pike Lake Elementary and Shelly is the mascot for Snail Lake Elementary. There will be a dedicated early childhood catalog that aligns with registration dates in December and a “Day in the Life” video for each kindergarten program.

A series of postcard reminders will be sent to families with children under the age of 5.

A new program landing page and web navigation provides parents with easier access to the different programs offered by the district for Early Childhood Education. There are four landing pages with specific details for each program and can be found online at mvpschools. org/ecfe.

The next Mounds Views Schools School Board meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, at the District Center, 4570 Victoria St. N., Shoreview.

Public comments to the board will be at 6:30 p.m. before the meeting.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office reported the following selected incidents in Shoreview: • A resident in the 4100 block of Lexington Avenue N. reported that someone stole a package containing a pair of prescription sunglasses off her front step April 2. No arrests had been made at the time of Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies’ official report.

• A Roseville man, 44, was arrested for DUI at 1:32 p.m. April 2 at the intersection of Rustic Place and Grass Lake Place after he crashed into a street sign while attempting to navigate a roundabout. The original report coming into dispatch described the driver as having been injured, but when deputies arrived on scene, they discovered he was impaired in another way. A report has been filed with the city attorney for consideration of charges.

• A resident in the 900 block of Monterey Court S. reported being defrauded out of money April 2 after she sought help with her iPhone by calling a phone number she found on an advertisement. The case is under investigation.

• The Ramsey County Library in the 4500 block of Victoria Street N. reported finding a laptop computer left behind by unknown persons on April 3. Deputies arrived on scene to retrieve the computer to be placed into property at the law enforcement center.

• A bicycle was reported stolen April 3 from the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue N. after someone loaded it onto a Metro Mobility bus, which drove away from the scene.

• A Pine City man reported that someone stole his wallet while he was shopping at the Blaine Target and later used his credit cards to fraudulently purchase hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise at the Shoreview Target in the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue N. on April 4.

• A Shoreview man, 35, was arrested at 2:05 a.m. April 5 in the 1500 block of County Road I for interfering with a 911 call after he was involved in a fight with one of his roommates and prevented that roommate from calling for help.

• A resident in the 5500 block of Turtle Lake Road reported his home burglarized April 5 while he was out of town. During the burglary, a motor vehicle was stolen from the detached garage.

• A schoolteacher in the 3500 block of Victoria Street N. reported a male student, 11, for losing his cool in class April 5, such that he kicked and punched the teacher. Finally, the student tried to stab the teacher

with a pencil.

• A resident in the 1400 block of Kirkwold Drive handed over a small chrome revolver to deputies on April 5, with the request to destroy it.

• A trailer was reported stolen from a driveway in the 4800 block of Nottingham Place where it was parked overnight April 5-6.

• A St. Paul man, 31, was arrested for domestic assault April 6 after he strangled his significant other during an argument in the 800 block of Monterey Drive. Because deputies were dispatched out to the scene, they were also able to arrest the suspect on an outstanding disorderly conduct warrant.

• An Arden Hills woman reported a hit-and-run accident in the Shoreview YMCA lot in the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue after someone crashed into the vehicle she’d parked before working out inside the facility on April 6.

• A St. Paul man, 31, was arrested at 11:37 a.m. April 6 for domestic assault and disorderly conduct in the 800 block of Monterey Drive after he strangled his significant other during an argument.

• A patron of the Shoreview Community Center in the 4500 block of Victoria Street N. reported that someone stole her jacket, car keys and Airpod case from a coat rack April 6 while she was working out at the fitness center. The case is under investigation.

• A Toyota Prius was reported stolen April 6 from an apartment complex in the 4100 block of Lexington Avenue N. The vehicle’s identification number was entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database.

• A resident in the 3500 block of Tiffany Lane called 911 to report a dog for trespassing on her property April 7, after its owner walked it on a retractable leash that extended at least 15 feet and allowed it to stray onto the complainant’s land.

• An injured doe was reported April 7 in the 900 block of Arbogast Street. “Injured doe was able to flee, so we let her be. Plus, her family was present and checking on her,” Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies reported in their log.

• Deputies conducting a welfare check in the 3900 block of Gramsie Court April 8 found a heavily intoxicated woman who said she’d been shot in the leg. The woman was transported to the hospital while deputies investigated when the injury occurred, who was responsible or why it may have happened.

• A woman reported from the 1300 block of Willow Creek Lane at 12:27 p.m. April 9 that she received

a phone call during her lunch break from an unknown number, telling her she owed money for unpaid fines and convincing her to fork over thousands of dollars.

• Deputies were dispatched out to the scene of a trashed apartment in the 500 block of Harriet Avenue on April 9, following a report of an evicted tenant allegedly damaging a kitchen sink on her way out the door.

• A Shoreview man on April 11 reported from the 4600 block of Hodgson Road that he had noticed fraudulent transactions on his Wells Fargo account after his debit card had been stolen.

• A St. Paul man, 44, was arrested for DWI at 7:48 a.m. April 11 after deputies were dispatched out to the Lake Josephine boat launch at Lexington Avenue and County Road D on the report of a driver slumped over the steering wheel. On arrival, deputies found the male to be intoxicated and in possession of a controlled substance. After the driver performed poorly on standardized field sobriety tests, he was taken into custody and his vehicle towed.

• A St. Paul woman reported her ex-boyfriend in the 300 block of Sherwood Road for contacting her via TikTok April 11 to threaten her.

• Deputies are investigating the origins of explicit and threatening graffiti found spray-painted April 11 on the bathroom building and dock at Turtle Lake Park in the 4900 block of Hodgson Road.

• A resident in the 5000 block of Turtle Lane West on April 11 reported losing more than $1,500 to a scammer who phoned him claiming to be with Xcel Energy and threatening to turn off his power.

• Three youths, all 16, were cited and issued trespass notices at 9:04 p.m. April 12 in the 500 block of Highway 96 after deputies responded to a report of three people making their way through the abandoned Union Gospel Mission building.

• A resident in the 1000 block of Ingerson Road on April 12 reported a glass pitcher and Dynex television missing after a contractor had been working on her home.

• A Keep Our Kops Safe (KOPS) alert was issued April 13 for the husband of a St. Paul woman after he assaulted her in the 4100 block of Lexington Avenue N. and left the scene. New domestic charges are being considered.

Shoreview man faces felony charges

Wrong-way crash in Mounds View ends in flames, injuries

Ernest Kevin Brown, of Shoreview, faces felony charges after stealing almost $18,000 worth of merchandise from the Home Depot located in Woodbury.

On February 9, 2023, police officers were dispatched to the Home Depot located at 8334 Tamarack Village, Woodbury on reports of employee theft.

Asset protection provided officers with their complete investigation, which showed that between Jan. 31-Feb. 9, 2023, Ernest Kevin Brown, a Home Depot employee at the time, exited the store with merchandise that was not paid for on multiple occasions. Asset protection had surveillance of Brown exiting with merchandise as early as Sept. 29, 2022; however, the loss has not been verified.

Records indicate that when confronted, Brown admitted to the thefts, alleging a total of approximately $55,000 in stolen items. Brown is in custody and faces up to 10 years in prison.

Two people have been injured in a wrong-way crash involving a stolen car on Highway 10 in Mounds View.

New Brighton police say officers saw two aggressive drivers cutting each other off and speeding on I-35W near West County Road H around 1:30 a.m.

April 17. Officers attempted to stop one of the drivers, who instead took off to West County Road E2 near Old Snelling Avenue. Police called off their pursuit.

Officers then were dispatched to a wrong-way crash on Highway 10 and I-35W. When they arrived, they saw that one of cars was the one involved in the earlier pursuit.

In a Minnesota Department of Transportation video of the aftermath of the crash, the two cars involved are seen to be on the side of the road in flames. Both drivers were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The car involved in both pursuit and crash had been stolen.

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and the University of Minnesota (UMN) have worked to more than double the number of Minnesota counties offering a program that helps children keep family ties to incarcerated parents.

The program focuses on improving the health of children and their incarcerated parents by facilitating visits and having parents complete parenting education programs in and outside of jail. The model jail practices learning community pilot project began in 2019, thanks to an initial grant from the Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Second Chance Act. Participating jails have made significant improvements during the last three years, despite launching the program during the COVID-19 pandemic. Several jails

have also implemented changes to create more family-friendly lobby and visiting spaces, including two jails that are creating a separate secure entry and in-person visiting room for families.

The county jails that participate in the program are located in Ramsey, Carlton, Olmsted, Renville, Stearns and Sherburn counties. The program will now launch in Hennepin, Brown, McLeod, Nicollet, Todd, St. Louis, Crow Wing and Scott County facilities.

In Minnesota, one in six children are impacted by parental incarceration, according to the Minnesota Student Survey. Parental incarceration can lead to an increased risk of illness, poor mental health, substance use and misuse, and poor academic outcomes among children. DAIRY QUEEN: Levy continues to make familiar favorites, cakes, bars and sandwiches FROM PAGE 1

John, also attended St. Paul Mechanic Arts. The two met at a pizza place in downtown St. Paul where Levy worked at the time. They had two children together, Laurie and Steve.

Levy started working for Norm Espersen, the original owner of the Shoreview building, when construction was completed on the structure in 1973.

“There was nothing around here.

Just this Dairy Queen sitting in this little spot,” Levy said. She explained that at the time there was a forest to the left side of the building and a strip mall with a roller rink to the right. Since then, the forest has been replaced by a car wash and the strip mall has become a Kowalski’s.

Over the last 50 years, Levy has worked as a worker and a manager, and is currently a shift supervisor. She was manager from 1993 up until 2000.

In 2009, she became a shift supervisor.

Levy still works at the Dairy Queen three times a week, Monday through Wednesday.

Her favorite item on the menu is the Peach Cobbler Blizzard.

“We used to make our own products,

like our Dilly Bars,” Levy added. “I still make the Dairy Queen sandwiches and now I am making the cakes.” She helps get all the blizzard cakes ready to be decorated. They also used to make their Buster Bars in-house.

Over the years, Levy has served her fair share of celebrities. She served former Minnesota Timberwolves coach Kevin McHale and Twins pitcher Frank Viola in the 1980s. Herb Brooks, former Olympic hockey coach, also used to stop in frequently. More recently, she spotted Esme Murphy from Channel 4 News.

“I love it here, and I am really going to have a hard time leaving,” Levy concluded.

The Dairy Queen is located at 4615 Hodgson Road, Shoreview. It is open every day, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., except for Friday and Saturday, when it is open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Spend the afternoon like a princess at a royal tea party

Once again, Shoreview’s young residents can spend an afternoon like royalty at the city’s royal tea party.

The tea party will take place from 3-4:30 p.m. Sunday, May 19.

“We started this event in 2017 and took a break from 2020-2021 and brought it back in 2022,” said Stephanie Schutta, Shoreview parks and recreation supervisor.

The afternoon will consist of crafts, a special appearance by a princess, storytelling, refreshments and lots of fun.

“Participants will be led in storytelling from two princesses and songs, crafts and refreshments,” she added.

Those who plan on attending should come dressed in their favorite princess look.

The event will take place Shoreview Community Center, 4580 Victoria St. N. Registration is required.

Mounds View collected medals in five events at the Hamline Elite Meet, a prestigious track-and-field invitational, on April 26. Placing third was the 4x200 quartet of Godson Rufus-Okomhanru, Cooper Fellman, Sam Sijone and Ethan Zhao in 1:28.66. In boys triple jump Toni Torboh placed fifth (43-11) and Colin Elliott sixth (43-6 1/2). Linnea Ousdigian placed sixth in the 3200 run (10:52.57) and Kyra Marshall seventh in 100 hurdles (16.52). The Mounds View boys won the four-team Bob Stewart Invitational at home last Tuesday against Stillwater, Cambridge-Isanti and Woodbury. Event winners were Godson Rufus-Okomhan (100 dash, 11.32), Fellman (200 dash, 22.38), Asher Compton (1600 run, 4:31.74), Casey Poppler (3200 run, 9:44), Charlie Robb (300 hurdles, 41.02), Luke Van Ort (discus, 175-0), Torboh (high jump, 6-3) and Elliott (triple jump, 45-9).

Mounds View has an 8-2 record after winning six matches over the last two weeks. The team defeated Irondale (7-0), Forest Lake (6-3), Woodbury (7-0), Roseville Area (7-0), Lakeville North (4-3) and Cretin-Derham Hall (7-0). In the win over Lakeville North (10-2), Soren Swenson won 6-3, 7-5 at 1-singles, Anders Swenson 6-3, 6-2 at 3-singles, Parker Bryntesen/Bryan Hule 6-3, 6-2 at 1-doubles and Michael Wang/Christian Forbes 7-6, 6-3 at 2-doubles. The Mustangs are ranked No. 6 in Class 2A. Soren Swenson, a sophomore who’s10-0 at 1-singles, is ranked No. 6 individually.

Mounds View is 4-4 after winning three of five duels the last two weeks.

The Mustangs beat Totino-Grace (11-5), lost to White Bear Lake (11-6), beat Irondale (12-8), beat Forest Lake (13-7) and lost to East Ridge (18-5). Ella Westerman has tallied 10 goals, and Madelyn Tinkle, Kali Anderson and Evelyn Anderson nine each. Goalies are Julia Gillespie and Amelia Brosnahan.

Mounds View baseball is holding first place in the Suburban East Conference (SEC) with an 8-2 record, just ahead of East Ridge and Stillwater, each 8-3.

In conference play, the Mustangs (9-2 overall) have beaten Park 10-2 and 7-1, Cretin-Derham Hall (5-4), Irondale (5-4), East Ridge (10-4_, Roseville Area (6-0), Woodbury (4-1) and Forest Lake (6-0). They have lost twice to Stillwater, 9-3 and 8-6. In non-conference, they beat Rogers 8-0.

The Mustangs’ top hitters are Tyler Guerin, .467 with three doubles, a triple, eight runs batted in (RBI) and 11 runs; Hayden Sperbeck, .457 with four doubles, 12 RBI’s and seven runs; Thomas Shields, .348 with six runs; Jack Glancey, .345 with two doubles, a triple, and 10 RBI’s; and Isaac Baseman, .296 with three doubles and seven runs.

The pitching staff is led by Andrew Gette with a 3-1 record, 2.27 earned run average (ERA), and 35 strikeouts in 22 innings; and Guerin with a 2-0 record, 2.63 ERA, and 31 strikeouts in 18 2/3 innings. Sawyer Anderson has thrown 12 innings with a 0.58 ERA and eight strikeouts.

Mounds View has a 3-10 record. In the last two weeks the Mustangs beat Irondale (4-3) while losing to Stillwater (11-1), Roseville (8-7), Cretin-Derham Hall (11-0) and Woodbury (9-4).

The Mustangs were seventh of 18 teams at East Ridge’s invitational April 24 at StoneRidge with 305. Goralski shot 68, two behind the medalist. LaBounty had a 76, Nathan Yee Yick 79 and Larson 82.

The Mustangs were seventh in a SEC meet April 22 at Stillwater with 320.

Austin,17, is a talkative, funny, and adventurous teen who enjoys being artistic (with skills ranging from diamond art to woodworking), riding his bike, and playing video games on his tablet. Some of his favorite woodworking projects to work on include bird houses, benches, and tables. When outside, Austin enjoys riding his bike to visit with his animal friends at a local farm. Austin has also been described by many as being thoughtful. He enjoys making handmade gifts for people in his life during the holiday season.

When not pitching, Guerin is a big, agile target at first base. He has committed to the University of Iowa.

Shoreview hosts spring cleanup day

The city of Shoreview offers one cleanup day a year for residents to bring trash that isn’t normally accepted by garbage haulers. This year, residents can bring their trash to McCullough Park from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 18.

Residents can bring appliances, furniture, electronics and mattresses to dispose of. Items that are not accepted include household hazardous waste, such as paint and fluorescent bulbs, yard waste and engines containing oil or gas.

Photo ID is required. McCullough Park is located at 955 County Road I, Shoreview. All vehicles must enter from westbound County Road I. If you have questions, call 651-490-4650.

The plant and craft sale will take place at 3891 Victoria St., Shoreview.

RSVP is required. Those interested can RSVP by emailing katanddryandfl@ gmail.com or by calling 612-460-1250.

Those who attend can park across the street at Shepherd of the Hills Church, 3920 Victoria St., Shoreview.
