3-D printers build body parts at Century
BY SARA MARIE MOORE EDITOR
in Shoreview March 6. Century College students toured the bioprinting center two weeks ago, Jasken said. He also brought several students to hear Panoskaltsis-Mortari speak at the VHEDC event about advances in bioprinting and what its future role could be in general medical practice. Last fall, Panoskaltsis-Mortari launched the fi rst 3-D bioprinting course in the country at the University of Minnesota. Students 3-D print cells to make tissues and organs. This is how it works: Adult skin cells are reprogrammed to be like embryonic stem cells, which in turn are made into the desired type of body cell to be used in 3-D printing.
SHOREVIEW — A client who was not checked on for 41 hours died in a group home this winter from heroin toxicity. The vulnerable adult was in a supported living services home operated by Dungarvin Minnesota and was independent but at risk for causing self-inflicted harm due to alcohol and drug use, according to Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) documents. The individual (the gender of the vulnerable adult was not identified) was on probation for drug possession. The group home was to provide a safe environment for the individual and limit unsupervised time in the community. However, staff did not check on the adult for 41 hours in November and eventually found them dead in their bedroom with a syringe, needle, plate and broken spoon. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner reported the individual died of “acute heroin toxicity.”

Students at Century College will soon be 3-D printing with body cells. The college has plans to launch a certificate program in biomanufacturing fall or spring semester 2019, said Randy Jasken, additive and digital manufacturing faculty member. The program will be in partnership with the biology department. The University of Minnesota 3-D Bioprinting Center is partnering with the college to assist the launch, said its director, Dr. Angela Panoskaltsis-Mortari, at a medical 3-D printing presentation hosted by the Vadnais Heights Economic Development Corporation (VHEDC)

All-inclusive scouting program teaches traditional skills BY SHANNON GRANHOLM QUAD PRESS EDITOR
The 6th Woodrunners of the Twin Cities was the fi rst Baden-Powell Service Association (BPSA) chapter to form in the state. Today, there are three chapters in Minnesota. BPSA was formed in the U.S. in 2006 as an independent and traditional-style scouting association, not affi liated with the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts. Robert Baden-Powell drafted the principles in 1907, which center on the origins of scouting: promoting self-reliance, good citizenship, training
in habits of observation, and loyalty. “Traditional scouting is about creating confident, productive, skillful and participatory community members through a fun program that is outdoor-focused and to gain a better perspective of our world. I believe this is the best I can do for my children as a parent,” said Chun-Yin Chong, Scoutmaster of the 6th Woodrunners. Chong, a Lino Lakes resident, helped establish the local chapter. Both his 11-yearold son Lucas and 6-year-old daughter Sophia are members
of the organization. Chong is an immigrant from Malaysia who grew up in the scouting program. He came to the U.S in 1999 to obtain a bachelor’s degree in fi nance from St. Cloud State University. After he graduated and found a job, he decided to stay in the country. He is currently a commercial real estate appraiser. Lucas was previously in another scouting organization, but didn’t love it. “He didn’t enjoy his experience at another organization because SEE SCOUTING, PAGE 16
