New facility brings alpine skiing indoors BY MATT VAUGHN CONTRIBUTING WRITER
ARDEN HILLS — Jessica Parcheta steps into her skis with a click and stares down an ominous slope while she fastens her helmet. Jumping down, she begins carving back and forth with speed and ease. There’s one slight difference between her and a skier out on one of the many runs in Minnesota: she’s doing all of this indoors. Jessica, of Stillwater, is
the co-founder of The Alpine Factory, a new, state-of-theart indoor skiing facility that opened in December in Arden Hills. The 5,000-squarefoot facility, located off I-694 and Lexington Avenue, is the fi rst of its kind in Minnesota and boasts two “infinite revolving slopes” which are used to simulate the feel of skiing or snowboarding down an actual outdoor snowy slope. An infi nite revolving slope can be described as a giant treadmill covered with spe-
cial carpeting similar to the texture and friction of snow. “The movements are the same as on the snow,” Jessica noted, whether for skiing or snowboarding. “So you are able to practice your turns in a controlled environment, using our mirrors [at the bottom of the slope] to see your performance and make adjustments to improve your technique.” Jessica and her co-founder, husband Dan Parcheta, were fi rst introduced to revolving slopes in 2011 at an interna-
tional ski instructor conference. “We knew we had to bring this technology to Minnesota and introduce a new way to slide to this passionate local ski and snowboard community,” Jessica said. The Parchetas are some of the most qualified people to bring this technology to the Twin Cities. They have more than 35 years of teaching skiing between them and both have achieved the highest

Erik Peterka, a ‘99 Mounds View High School alum who grew up in Shoreview, was named the 2017 Prince of the North Wind (Titan). Peterka is sponsored by Hamernick’s Decorating. Peterka will represent the northern suburbs of St. Paul throughout the year at various functions. Also pictured: Johanna Smith, Princess of the North Wind, sponsored by VocalEssences.
In its 25th year of putting on musicals, St. Odilia Catholic Church is off to see the wizard, the wonderful “Wizard of Oz.” Longtime Shoreview residents John and Peggy Dyer have dedicated more than 20 years to St. Odilia’s musical ministry, and this year John will direct the classic by L. Frank Baum. It all began when the Dyer’s oldest son Nick was 11 years old. He heard about the musical from friends and talked his dad into going to the kickoff meeting to get details. When John played Joseph in “The Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat,” all four of the Dyer children acted in the musical. After that, their kids got hooked on the church’s yearly musicals. “It’s a great activity for the family to do together and it was a way to keep busy during the winter months,” John said. Nick is now in his 30s and has children of his own, but John and Peggy still participate in the yearly musical productions. The kids in the show love to be with the adults and vice versa. Without the intergenerational aspect of the shows, the productions simply wouldn’t be the same. When John fi rst started participating in the musicals, he played in the orchestra. Then he tried acting. He eventually got the directing bug and wanted to give that a try, too. He got his feet wet as an assistant director for the musical, “Godspell.” He assisted with a couple more musicals and then directed “Fiddler on the Roof.” John and his wife Peggy work as a team. While John has done everything from being in the orchestra to acting and directing, Peggy has been making costumes for the musicals SEE MUSICAL, PAGE 14
