Expansion, development defines 2018 New things are ahead for Shoreview in 2018.

“As we begin 2018, I continue to be fi lled with excitement, hope, and optimism for our great city,” said Mayor Sandy Martin during her 2018 State of the City Address at the Shoreview City Council meeting Jan. 2. “This will be a particularly exciting year because of the major expansion of our Community Center which will enhance the visitor’s experience and provide many new amenities for our residents. By the end of this year, the improvements will be completed and available for everyone’s enjoyment.”

The waterpark and indoor playground will be expanded and the expansion project will also include a 15,000 square foot, two-story addition adjacent to the gymnasium.

“This addition represents the most significant improvement to the Community Center since the new fitness center was constructed 15 years ago,” Martin noted.

The city also has plans for the Shoreview Commons area around the Community Center.

“I am also excited to announce that we are completing an update to the master plan for our Shoreview Commons Park,” Martin said. “The

Family bonds behind-the-scenes of musical ministry A Vadnais Heights family has been making memories behind the scenes of a musical for seven years.

Andy and April Schneider and their four daughters, Kayla, 20, Grace, 18, Claire, 15 and Lily 12, create musical scenes for a few months each year.

The family is part of the St. Odilia Catholic Church Musical Ministry in Shoreview.

The Schneiders are members of the behind-the-scenes crew for the annual musicals.

Although Kayla and Grace are away at school now, the rest of the family happily carries on the tradition the family

has been engaged in for seven years.

Despite busy work and school schedules, the team continues to commit many hours to make the musicals come to life through the sets they’ve helped create for a great variety of shows.

Their interest was sparked by attending the annual musicals over the years and the daughters found a new group of friends when they volunteered to work on the crew.

Involvement in youth ministry for Claire opened a door to the musical ministry work, alongside fellow students. The

sense of community that their children felt helped to draw the whole family in.

The mission of the group is to present shows, often with a biblical theme, that express God’s love for his children.

The goal is to not only entertain and teach audiences but build community among a cast and crew of all ages who end up feeling more like family when the show is done.

The Schneiders have entertaining stories to tell about their years of set decoration.

New performing arts center in home stretch

Every room in White Bear Lake's new performing arts center has either been named on behalf of a benefactor or is awaiting one. The community has been generous.

The curtain will lift next fall on the new home of Lakeshore Players Theatre and Children's Performing Arts. Actors will have their own dressing room, there is a scenic shop for set building, props and costumes will have a dedicated storage room — even a new Steinway will have its own climate-controlled closet, stage left.

“A lot of thought has been put into every corner of this building,” maintained Kathy Blegen-Huntley, Birchwood resident and the capital campaign consultant.

Of the $9.2 million needed for the 22,000-squarefoot facility, $870,000 remains to be raised.

“We met our goal early,” Blegen-Huntley stated, “and we're in the capstone (or fi nal) phase of the campaign. For anyone who wants to contribute, now is the time.”

What has made the campaign effort unique is that funding has come mostly from individuals and community members, noted Rob Thomas, Lakeshore Players managing director.

“This is pretty special,” he said. “It's almost unprecedented for the majority of money to come from individuals, as opposed to grants or government funding. The community wanted this so bad that they really stepped up.”

A tour through the state-of-the-art facility late last month began in the lobby, named for the Sally Ordway Irvine Family. Striking features like the curved “curtain glass” window and limestone fi replace greet theatergoers who will enter on either side of the lobby.

There will be benches and tables for patrons to enjoy sandwiches and desserts from local vendors.

Beer and wine will be served. During the day, the lobby and its coffee shop atmosphere will be open to the public, who can use the Wi-Fi. The theater's board felt the access would encourage ticket sales, Blegen-Huntley noted.

Described as “huge, but still intimate,” the theater will seat 250. Ergonomically designed cushions will be a big improvement from the uncomfortable seats in the old theater. Every seat will have a cup holder.

Thomas is traveling to Queens, New York, this month with piano instructor Dr. Reid Smith of Dellwood to select the $150,000 Steinway.

“Reid is excited about the prospects of utilizing the Steinway not only for young performers, but for world-class pianists,” noted Thomas, who was told 98 percent of concert pianists require a Steinway in their contract.

Every aspect of the theater's design purposefully stems from something they heard from the community, Thomas said.

One notable bit of feedback involved stairs. In the new theater, patrons can walk anywhere without taking a single step up or down. “That was a big issue for seniors,” he said. “This is 100 percent accessible.”

According to Blegen-Huntley, the project is on time and on budget.

“The campaign has been extremely cost effective with low overhead,” she noted. “The cost per square foot for what we're getting is phenomenal.

A number of subcontractors have donated extra services because we're a nonprofit, so we're actually getting more for every dollar spent.”

Fundraising officially started in 2014. According to Thomas, the average capital campaign takes eight to nine years. They're doing it in four.

“This project is spot on for this community,” added Blegen-Huntley. “There is something for everyone here.”

Moving day will be sometime in early March.

Brush with death

G

randparents have played a huge role in our lives, especially when we have early morning or night meetings, events, or want to take a night off to hang out with friends.

Last Friday night we had a party to go to and my in-laws said they would spend the evening with the kids, which included dinner and a 9 p.m. pick up from ski club at the middle school.

With a hundred or so kids coming off the bus, the pick-up procedure is a little chaotic. As my father-inlaw was walking towards the front door of the school to look for my daughter, he slipped on the ice and fell in front of a Suburban lined up in the pick-up lane. It was dark, and driver of the Suburban, who Publisher’s the presumably didn’t know he was in front of her truck, began to pull View forward. On his knees struggling to Carter Johnson stand up he pounded on the front of her bumper so she would stop. She did, and it all turned out OK except for a bruised knee. Plus, he was a little rattled at the thought of almost being run over. It was a reminder to all of us how quickly accidents can happen.

Since then I have experienced two instances where I thought little kids were going to run out in front of my car. Keep an eye out for children at the bus stop or playing in snow banks, people walking along the roads, slippery intersections and parking lots. Give yourself extra time to get places, go slow, be aware of what is going on around you, and keep your windshield washer fluid full and your car washed so you can see clearly out of your windows.

Thankful for carriers I am so thankful for the parents who have allowed their children to be carriers and encouraged them to manage their own business with a newspaper route. On Jan. 13, we rented Emagine Theatre in the township for a private showing of “Star Wars” for more than 50 of our carriers. Multiple times a year we show a new release movie to celebrate our youth carriers and the families who support them.

We also typically show a short video to highlight a past carrier’s story. This time we interviewed our news team to explain how they find story leads and create news stories for the papers. We also featured interviews with current and former carriers, including local business leaders and even an astronaut who once was a Press Pubs carrier.

I would like to thank the hundreds of local residents who choose to make the youth carrier program sustainable through your subscriptions, as well as words of encouragement, kindness and tips.

Last fall a young carrier was struggling with a route. She had not had much success with collections, the weather was cold and she was ready to throw in the towel. A single $20 tip came through our office and changed her view. She held on to the route and her parents said she has had a little spark in her eye and a spring in her step ever since. Many thanks to the 100-plus youth and adult carriers who help us get the community newspaper delivered and the subscribers who support their jobs and process.

Postal carriers When we moved into our house our postal carrier, Tim, was among the first to welcome us to the neighborhood. Our local postal carriers are more than just delivery men and women — they are residents, friends, neighbors and a watchful eye against crime. As our family filled a few open newspaper routes over the holidays, we were reminded how difficult it is to deliver the newspaper this time of year, and imagine that delivering the mail every day must be even more challenging. Please make sure to keep your mailbox and newspaper tube free of snow. Take a look at the fire hydrants in your neighborhood, too, as they need to be clear and accessible.

Business saves money and cuts water waste “Water is the oil of the 21st century,” declared Andrew Liveris in 2008, speaking as Executive chairman of DowDuPont, a $71 billion chemical company with hundreds of offices and manufacturing locations around the world.

Ten years later, this statement continues to ring true. Around the world, fresh, Movers and clean water has become a preShakers cious commodity, and even in waAngie Hong ter-rich locations like Minnesota, businesses are realizing the importance of conserving and reusing the water we have.

Within the North and East Metro Groundwater Management Area, which includes all of Ramsey and Washington and portions of Anoka and Hennepin Counties, 12 percent of all groundwater used (3.5 billion gallons per year) goes toward industrial uses. Last year, Washington County partnered with the Minnesota Technical Assistance Program (MnTAP), an outreach program at the University of Minnesota, to offer free, in-depth water efficiency consultations and specially trained summer interns to help businesses implement water-saving projects. Diasorin in Stillwater was one of the businesses that participated in the program.

DiaSorin is an Italian biomedical company that produces diagnostic test kits for hospitals and private testing laboratories around the world. During 201516, the company used approximately 8.5 million gallons of water from the city of Stillwater for manufacturing and building operations. MnTAP staff found that 37 percent of the incoming water was unaccounted for, meaning they couldn’t determine how it was being used or lost.

Yohanes Agustinus, a chemical engineering student at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities was selected as the MnTAP intern in 2017 to help DiaSorin identify and implement water-saving measures.

During the course of his internship, Agustinus found seven potential projects, three of which were implemented by the end of the year: 1) Replacing a solenoid valve saved $6,800 and 977,600 gallons of water per year; 2) Installing a throttling flow-through vacuum pump saved $15,400 and 2.2 million gallons a year; and 3) A new on-demand vacuum system will save an additional $5,200 and 522,300 gallons a year, in addition to reducing energy use by 28,000 kWh per year.

“I’ve always been passionate about pushing for a greener chemical industry,” said Agustinus, “and this program has allowed me to use my engineering skills to realize large water savings that make both economic and environmental sense.”

“This is the fi rst time that DiaSorin teamed up with MnTAP to sponsor an intern, and it was a huge success,” said Kelly Gilliland, the environmental, health and safety manager at DiaSorin.

Previously, the company had worked with Washington Conservation District and Middle St. Croix Watershed Management Organization to treat and reuse stormwater runoff from their parking lot through a series of two raingardens and a stormwater pond with pump. The project captures nearly 15 pounds of phosphorus and 3,160 pounds of sediment per year, helping to protect Lily Lake downstream, and allows the company to reuse stormwater for irrigating turf and landscape plantings.

MnTAP is currently accepting applications for 2018 summer internships between now and Feb. 1. With the help of a MnTAP intern, businesses will receive suggestions to improve efficiency, save money, reduce waste and material usage or decrease regulatory compliance burden.

The Shoreview Commons area is not the only one with new construction.

“Although Shoreview is almost completely developed, the City has experienced a record year in building construction activity in 2017 with more than $100 million in new valuation,” Martin added.

Loden-SV is a large, upscale 410-unit apartment project located at 1005 Gramsie Road within the Shoreview Corporate Center. It will be constructed in two phases with the fi rst phase of over 200 apartments expected to open in the fall of 2018.

The City Council also recently reviewed a concept stage development proposal from JPL Development for a mixed-use development for the 18.6-acre vacant property within the Rice Creek Corporate Park located at County Road J and I-35W. The project includes a 100-room hotel, restaurant, 310-unit apartment building, and about 70 townhome units. It is anticipated that the Council will consider the development plan for this significant new project in the fi rst few months of 2018.

More road improvements are also planned.

Reconstruction of I-694 between Rice Street and Lexington Avenue has been completed. Construction of a new bridge over Rice Street is planned to begin in 2018. The project includes three roundabouts.

Ramsey County has already completed the construction of the fi rst roundabout in the city at the intersection of I-35W exit ramp/Rice Creek Parkway/County Road I in northwest Shoreview.

“Although the new roundabout design will take some getting used to, the new intersection is much

safer since it eliminated a difficult northbound access to I-35W,” Martin said.

The city also dealt with a flooding issue.

“After dealing with extremely high groundwater levels for the past two years that had flooded Gramsie Road, the city was able to complete a project that significantly raised the road level through the flooded roadway section,” she said. “The city is also working collaboratively with Ramsey County and the Ramsey Washington Metro Watershed District to study and consider methods to further reduce the high groundwater levels in the area that not only flooded Gramsie Road but have also made several trail sections within the Snail Lake Regional Park area unusable.”

Th city will also undertake about five miles of local roads in 2018 with $3 million in bonds.

Martin also noted the city’s AAA bond rating that was recently reconfi rmed by Standard and Poor’s.

“This is the highest bond rating available and is due in large part to the City’s continued focus on long-range fi nancial planning, sound fi nancial policies, healthy reserves, as well as a strong regional economy,” she noted.

Martin said she is proud of the quality of life in the community.

“As a City Council, we take great pride that 98 percent of the respondents in our most recent community survey rate the quality of life as excellent or good; and that 97 percent believe that the city is headed in the right direction. These are among the highest ratings of any city in the metro area and reason for all of us to be proud of our community.”

Super Bowl memories recovered from attic

A Super Bowl memory to last a lifetime occurred because of Ralph Hayne's desire to own a personal computer.

It was 1992, Minnesota was hosting the championship game, and Hayne had his eye on a $2,500 "electronic toy" that wife Linda insisted was not in the family budget. So the father of two got a part-time job driving a limousine about six months prior to Super Bowl XXVI. The week of the big game, Hayne took time off from his regular job at Unisys to drive the limo; he just didn't know for whom. That would be a surprise.

Standing at the airport gate holding a sign for a Bill Smith (you could go to the gate in those days), he heard commotion on the jetway as passengers departed from the California flight. Then out walks the most famous heavyweight boxer of all time: Muhammad Ali, aka Bill Smith.

Ali was surrounded by fans seeking his autograph, and accompanied by his brother in law. Hayne couldn't remember the relative's name but the man was always

And so Super Bowl week began for the chauffeur from White Bear Township and the boxing legend who was invited by the NFL to emcee official events.

Every morning at 9 a.m., Hayne met Ali for breakfast at his hotel on the 494 strip in Bloomington to go over the day’s itinerary. It was packed with appearances leading up to Super Sunday that required dashing from one event to another with Ali usually returning to his room at 1 or 2 a.m.

At every engagement, the boxing celebrity was showered with gifts that Hayne personally lugged up to his room night after night. Towards the end of the week, they had to rent Ali’s adjoining room to store all the swag.

He didn’t talk much, Hayne said, letting his brother in law do most of the communicating. In 1992, Ali would turn 50 and was showing signs of Parkinson’s, a disease he lived with for three decades.

Hayne was 46 at the time and felt he immediately clicked with the boxing great. His role was not only chauffeur, but he became a personal assistant and tour guide, Hayne said.

“I think he liked my style,” Hayne recalled. “I constantly asked him, ‘what can I do for you?’ How can I help?’ I was always chatting it up with the cops (at the appearances) and shaking hands with them. I was as outgoing as he was.”

If there was downtime in the schedule, Ali wanted to view the sights. They went to Harriet Island to see the

Winter Carnival ice castle one morning and then spent two hours in a St. Paul magic shop on Seventh Street. “He fancied himself a magician,” Haynes said. “He loved magic tricks.”

On Super Thursday, Hayne picked up Ali’s two nephews at the airport. They wanted to do one thing: ice fish. Hayne had coached a hockey player who owned an ice shack on White Bear Lake - Scott Vadnais. He asked Vadnais if he could bring a visiting dignitary and his nephews to ice fish.

“I wouldn’t tell him who it was. So on Saturday, the day before the game, I drove the limo out on the lake. Everyone went berserk when Ali got out of the car.”

The Kentucky-born boxer didn’t fish, but he was curious about the sport. “He was amazed at all the activity on the lake,” Hayne said. “There were probably 3,000 people attending an ice fishing contest and snowmobile race as part of the Winter Carnival. It was a beautiful day.”

When his boss found out Hayne had driven Ali out on the ice, he chewed the driver out. “He was really annoyed I took someone like Ali out there,” Hayne said. “He felt it was an unsafe environment. I almost got fired.”

Memorabilia from his week with “The Great One” was rediscovered last week when Hayne and his daughter Brenda Melius brought boxes down from the attic as step one to downsizing.

Hayne is a widower, having lost his wife Linda in 2002 after 31 years of marriage. Their son Jeffrey Hayne was 25 when he died in a car accident in 1998. The White Bear Lake Area Hockey Association named its Junior Gold tournament after Jeff Hayne, coincidentally slated for this weekend. Ralph was a co-founder of the association’s

On the day of the Super Bowl, Hayne drove Ali to the Metrodome, jumping the curb like he always did to drop his guest at the prearranged door. “It was 15 minutes before the game. He never wanted to get anywhere early. I opened the car door and he got out. NFL people were there to escort him to the suite. I turned around to get back in the limo to move it to a downtown parking area set aside for the 400 limos in town. Ali stopped me and said I was coming in. So a cop took my keys in case they had to move the limo and a NFL guy hands me a ticket. I sat on the 50-yard line 20 rows up from the bench. That would be a $10,000 seat in today’s game.”

Hayne was told to keep an eye on the suite behind him to make sure Ali didn’t want to make an early departure.

An occasional wave would indicate that everything was OK. On Monday when it was all over, Ali tasked Hayne with packing up all the gifts and goodies and shipping the many boxes to Michigan, where Ali lived at the time. It took the driver 14 hours.

Twenty-six years later, Hayne, 72, recollected the time spent with the famous boxer. If there was one word to describe Ali, it would be “gracious,” he said.

“He enjoyed the crowds. And people adored him. He did not want to do anything that might make people unhappy.

He wanted to please everyone. It was quite a week.”

And oh yeah, his tip was enough to buy the computer.

were told to create a bookcase that appeared to be fi lled with books. Claire and Lily had a great time coming up with some real and fantastical titles to inscribe on their wall of books. The family has helped create a yellow brick road and false walls to mimic the one behind the altar. They even had the opportunity to submit ideas for depicting a realistic tornado for “The Wizard of Oz.” Andy says they are given an assignment and then trusted to do the work, without even a hint of micro-managing. But you don’t have to have any special talents to lend a hand. Twelve-year-old Lily was called upon to be the invisible actor behind some tumbling tumbleweed for one production.

Once you become a part of the musical ministry team, April said, you are hooked and come back year after year. She talks about a feeling of “being called” to do this work, which has been rewarding and fun. In fact, she decided 20 years ago when she came to St. Odilia that this was the church where she would become a Catholic. She enjoys the people she has met in this volunteer work and loves the sense of commitment she observes.

Daughter Claire has seen people take projects home, like a woman who created an entire house and then brought it back to the set. Another parishioner has stored a camel prop at his home for three years.

The feeling that you are part of something so much bigger keeps you grounded, April said. And then, one day, “an amazing production happens.”

The upcoming production the Schneiders are preparing for is “The Borrowed Tomb,” to be performed at St. Odilia Catholic Church in Shoreview the weekend of Feb. 8-11. The musical challenges the audience to ask whether they would have lent a tomb to Jesus.

Shoreview resident Mike Kelley will play Jesus. It is the seventh year he and his daughters Kai and Lizzie have been in the ministry’s annual musical. Lizzie, a fifth grader, is a lead singer in the role of Bethany.

Kai, a sophomore at St. Kate’s, plays many parts.

Mike got involved in the Musical Ministry at St. Odilia in 2010. His daughter Kai was in a play and he was driving her to practices several times a week. One week, she said, “They really need guys, Dad.” He just thought he would help out, but instead, it was the beginning of a musical hobby.

“Boy, does it make you nervous to play Jesus in your own church,” he said.

Comedian considers 40-year career a privilege

When he was growing up, Bob Stromberg was always able to make his classmates and parents laugh, but he could never be the class clown because his father was the school principal.

Now at the age of 65, 40 years into his comedy career, Stromberg has no plans to retire any time soon. Stromberg, a resident of Hugo, grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania. “I always knew I wanted to do this,” he said. “It has been such a privilege to be able to do what I love doing. It has been difficult, hard work, but I love doing it. ” After high school, Stromberg attended college in Chicago, where he majored in art with a minor in theater. In addition, he attended Celebration Barn Theater, “Maine’s center for immersive physical theater training.”

He then got married, had kids and decided with his wife to give it a try for three years; if he couldn’t make a successful career in that time, he would move on to something else. “I started knocking on doors of schools to see if they would let me do a performance for an assembly and it just took off.

I got very busy, very quickly,” he recalled.

During his 40-year career, Stromberg has had a wide variety of opportunities to perform at school, churches, conferences, conventions and more. He is now a

nationally known speaker, comedian and author.

In 2012 he competed in America’s Got Talent and made it to Las Vegas. Last summer he made another appearance on national television, showing off his creative hand shadows on Steve Harvey’s “Little Big Shots: Forever Young.”

Lately, most of his time has been spent performing “Triple Espresso.” The show is Minneapolis’ longest-running theater production, and was conceived as a way for Stromberg to work onstage with his friends and co-creators, Michael Pearce Donley and Bill Arnold. “Triple Espresso” has played various venues in over 70 cities for 23 years.

“You can bring anybody to the show … school-aged children, grandmas and grandpas, and even great-grandparents. It is smart humor, and very clean. There is no risk of anybody being offended,” Stromberg explained. “It is truly as much as you can laugh in two hours. It’s three comedians putting their talents together, and it works beautifully.”

Stromberg enjoys teaching others how to hone their craft. He offers an online six-week course “Mastering the Craft of Creativity.”

“I realized, looking back over my 40 years of doing what I do, not very many people have done what I do. Creativity is not only a gift, it’s a craft; you can work at it and get better at it,” he said.

On Oct. 8 they had the dedication service for the garden, which is nestled between North Heights Lutheran Church and Highway 96 near the site of the accident. The dedication service was presided over by four different pastors: One from Marty’s church, one from Stephanie’s family’s church, one from Marilee’s church and one from North Heights. “It was four different churches together, and they worked together to have a very meaningful, short, sweet service,” Marilee said.

There was also a smaller prayer service at the memorial garden on Dec. 1, the fi rst anniversary of the accident.

In Bridget’s honor, the Giere family organizes events at Feed My Starving Children (FMSC), Bridget’s favorite place to volunteer. “We did a number of events there before she died,” Marty remembered. “When it was her birthday, she’d get her friends to go up there with her.”

Marty confesses he has some regrets. “I don’t remember how many times I hugged her, kissed her, told her I loved her, but we should’ve done it more,” he said.

The Giere family is still coping and recovering from their loss. Life will never be the same. Nor should it be. Marilee offered some words that she thought her daughter might want to say: “Treasure every minute you have, be true to your friends, do things for others and eat bran muffi ns.”

“Every day is a void. It’s just unbearable,” he said. “I think about her all the time and don’t see her. Never be good, so it is what it is.”

Over the summer, Marty has tried to fi ll the void with projects. He constructed a memorial garden for Bridget and found a headstone for her grave. For the garden, Marty worked with North Heights Lutheran Church, which volunteered to put up the crosses, and Eddie Brody, who came forward to help as his Eagle Scout project. Marty’s neighbor, Nick Tamble, helped as a landscaper while his other neighbor made the signs that decorate the garden. The garden is “dedicated to all the young people that lose their

Marilee Giere used to make bran muffi ns in the mornings. She would wake up extra early just to put them in the oven. Twenty minutes later, she would pull them out, piping hot and made with love.

She would give the muffins to her daughter Bridget, who would share them with her friends at school. Sometimes she said, “I love you.” Sometimes she didn’t.

On the fi rst morning of December, Marilee didn’t make muffins. But when Bridget left for school, she said to her, “Have a good day. I love you.”

“You, too, mom.”

Then, she left. Soon after, Marilee received a call from Lauren Bondi, a friend of Bridget’s. “Isn’t Bridget coming to school today?” Lauren asked.

“Well, she left at the normal time,” Marilee responded. “She’s not here, but there was a real bad accident on 96,” Lauren said. Bridget’s brother, Kyle Giere, who was with Marilee at the time, went to check on it.

After a while, he still hadn’t called back. Marilee, worried, decided to call him. “It’s bad, mom. It’s really bad,” Kyle said. She woke up her husband, Marty. “Something’s happened, I’ve got to go,” she said.

Grabbing her keys, she rushed to the car and drove down Highway 96. As she drove under the bridge, she saw the accident. The hearse was already there.

Marilee pulled into the Holiday gas station nearby. She met up with her son, who was standing at the scene. A policeman approached her and confi rmed her worst fears.

“I’m sorry to tell you she didn’t make it,” he said. They stood there in shock for a long time.

Marilee eventually went back to her car to call family and friends. She told them that Bridget had died. Marty still

only knew there had been an accident.

Marty was at home, waiting in the kitchen, when their oldest daughter, Shannon, came screeching into the driveway. She slammed open the back door and collapsed in front of Marty.

Marilee had called her. “She didn’t make it,” she said to Marty.

“From the day, from that time on, it’s been hell,” Marty said.

Shortly after, Marilee returned home to Marty. At around 12:30, the police arrived to inform the family that Bridget was in the morgue and that they could visit her. Priscilla, a family friend, took them to say goodbye.

The Giere family held their funeral service on Tuesday, Dec. 6. Around 1,000 people came. “My arms were hurting from hugging, but it was a good way to hurt,” Marilee remembered.

In the months after, Marty and Marilee immersed themselves with the community. “The next three months I spent receiving condolences and cards and replying to people — had a lot of contact with people,” Marty said. “It was a long process.”

Marilee has turned to her books to find solace. “I have a bunch of different books I’m reading. About, you know, grief and losing a child and just how to survive loss. It [has] helped me a lot,” she noted. “You find out you’re not the only one.”

She’s also been involved with the community, organizing game nights at her church. “A bunch of the students have come to those, so that’s always good just to see them,” she said. “And, you know, whenever they see us, they give us a hug.” She attends a couple different groups, including a book club at the Shoreview library, where memorial stones for Bridget and Stephanie were recently placed. “Some days are good, some days aren’t. It helps to have a lot of support from neighbors, family and friends, students,” she added.

For Marty, every day is a struggle.

The Christmas tree is up, a reminder of Jesus’ birth and eternal life. But for Steven and Catherine Carlson, it makes them recall the haunting memory of their daughter’s death in a tragic car crash the previous Christmas season.

Various mementos surround the tree, each in some way connected to their daughter, Stephanie Carlson. A painted ceramic plate, a picture and a wooden cross keep her alive and help them remember the time they had with her.

The ceramic plate holds a memory of Stephanie’s life. A week before the car accident, the Carlsons put up the Christmas tree together. While decorating the tree, Stephanie commented on the ceramic plate that she had painted at Saint Agnes School.

“Oh, I hate that plate! Will you just throw it away?” Stephanie said.

“No, I’m not gonna throw it away, you made it,” Catherine said. And now, she’ll never throw it away.

Looking at the plate, the Carlsons are brought back to the tragic accident, thinking about the day and the hours that led up to the crash.

The night before the accident, they went through their typical routine: Stephanie came home from work, walked into her parents’ bedroom, gave hugs and kisses and said goodnight. A peaceful night passed at the Carlsons’ home.

Then, another day of school started.

An ordinary Thursday morning: Wake up around 6:30 a.m., leave the house at 6:50 a.m. and arrive at Mounds View 20 minutes later. Even though it was a rushed morning, Catherine Carlson had taken the time to make a grilled cheese sandwich for Stephanie — just the way she liked it.

Before leaving the house, the hallway was always where the last conversation had started and ended.

“Wow, honey, you look especially pretty today,” Catherine said. “Love you,” Stephanie said. “Love you more.”

“Love you most.” Then, Stephanie left the house, ready for another day of school. Catherine and Steven also carried on with their own, busy lives.

Both of them were off to work; Catherine drove straight to the Vets Home, and Steven started another day of work at the post office as a special driver.

Later that day, a police officer pulled Catherine out of a meeting.

“Well, she was killed this morning in a car crash,” the officer told her.

Catherine immediately called Steven, telling him to come to her workplace.

Steven left work without knowing why.

“I knew something horrible happened when Catherine called me to come to her job, but I just assumed it was probably gonna be something about our son, who’s in the military,” Steven remembered. “I never thought it would be Stephanie. The girls were just going to school.”

In the months following the accident, the Carlsons visited many different support groups and found their own way of coping with their daughter’s death. They use work, books, faith, CDs, grief counselors and support groups to get through the down days that come when their minds aren’t preoccupied.

Catherine started work a few weeks after the accident to distract herself from the loss, but then realized that she had dived in too early. “That was probably a mistake to go back that early,” Catherine noted. “I don’t know how

I got through those fi rst few months.”

She later noticed that it wasn’t just her who was living in a nightmare — her kids were also going through a blur. “For a while, I know my other kids were grieving, and they have their loss and their pain. But I was so mired in my own grief and in my own shock that I couldn’t parent my other kids. I couldn’t be a relief to them either,” Catherine said. “That caused me more guilt and pain.”

Later, she learned to rely on books and her faith, which was reinforced after the crash. “I’m basically an introvert, so part of the way I heal from something is to revert into my books,” she explained. “What has helped me the most is probably my faith. I guess I’ve needed a refuge and I’ve fallen back on my faith, which has helped.”

As for Steven, he has come to the realization that life will be different, but talking to others has helped him get through the months after the accident. “There’s our life before that day and now there’s our life after; so many things are different,” he said. “You need to talk [to] somebody who does understand it. They always say that now you’re part of the club you never wanted to be in. I don’t know why it helps, but it does. I just know you can’t hold it in; you can’t.”

He has also joined multiple groups, but one group, in particular, has helped him through this time: a grief group at Saint Mary of the Lake Catholic Church in White Bear Lake.

“There’s this woman whose husband and son died within four months of each other. She misses her husband, but she is way more broken up about her son,” he said. “There’s something about your kid dying that’s so hard on people, even if the kid is in their thirties or forties. It’s horrible.”

The community’s support has also helped the Carlsons through their grieving. “People in the community have been very, very supportive and loving. People still greet us or say things to us, which is really nice because, you know, that’s really important when somebody has had a loss like that —don’t ignore it,”Catherine said.

“Talk about it. Talk about the person.”

Pictures, artwork and stuffed animals lay on tables and bookshelves around the Carlsons’ living room, bringing back memories of their daughter.

On days that are harder to get through, some things just can’t be looked at. “Sometimes it’s hard to look at pictures of her, sometimes it’s not,” Catherine said.

Looking back at a picture of all five siblings, Catherine recollects the moment it was taken. “Oh, I want a picture of all five of you because it’s probably the last time I’ll get a picture of all of you together,” she remembered. She meant that one of her sons, David, who is currently in the Navy, could be deployed for a while — she wasn’t talking about Stephanie.

This year, she made the decision to move forward and send this picture out with the family’s Christmas cards.

In remembrance of their daughter, the Carlsons put up the Christmas tree, and alongside it in Stephanie’s memory, is her ceramic plate — forever loved and never forgotten.

Winter is looking snowy in Minnesota

The Arctic beauty of the snowy owl, with its black-spotted white feathers and piercing yellow eyes, has captivated human imagination for so long that the owl is depicted in early European cave paintings. It’s not surprising, then, that this mysterious animal is causing such a stir this year, as Minnesotans notice an increase in the number of snowy owls visiting the state.

A population boom such as this one is known as an “irruption,” and scientists are still trying to understand all of the elements that cause it — and the effects that stem from it. Snowy owl irruptions happen around every 4-5 years, and are thought to be caused by a good summer breeding season in the Arctic. Many of the owls seen in Minnesota are young ones that are spreading out to explore after leaving their Arctic home for the first time.

Scott Weidensaul is a founding member of Project SNOWstorm, a non-governmental organization that tracks snowy owl movement across the nation.

The project began after a prominent irruption four years ago, when “a tsunami of white owls came flooding out of the Arctic,” Weidensaul said.

The project uses data from GPS transmitters that are attached to wild owls, as well as reports from the bird observation website eBird.

“Looking at Minnesota, there are a lot of reports in and around the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, which is not surprising because there are more observers there,” Weidesaul said. There have also been a high number of snowy owl sightings along the coastlines of Lake Superior and in the farmland in the southwest of the state, where the wide-open country resembles the flat Arctic tundra.

“They’re more nomadic than migratory, and while many will come south again, they don’t all do that every winter,” Weidensaul explained. “Some of them will go north for the winter and spend the winter on permanent sea ice, feeding on sea ducks.” Weather and wind conditions can affect the birds’ destination each year.

There are a few misconceptions about snowy owl irruptions, Weidensaul said.

Many people assume that the owls are on the move because they have run out of food sources in their usual habitat.

On the contrary, these owls are usually healthy and well fed.

“A small subset of folks that are convinced these birds need help, and that’s

not true,” Weidensaul said. “Some photographers have a tendency to toss live mice out (to attract the bird), which is increasingly frowned on.”

Known as “owl baiting,” this practice is controversial among birders and photographers.

This phenomenon created so much tension that the Minnesota Legislature considered a bill in 2014 to ban the practice, but the bill did not pass.

The locations of sightings are sometimes closely guarded to avoid attracting a large number of people with cameras and binoculars who might disturb the birds.

“Because they’re young birds and snowy owls are coming from places with few or no people at all, often they are quite naive about people,” Weidensaul said. “They can be approached much more closely than most owls, and they can seem tame. Because they’re so beautiful, people want to get close, so people often do get too close. We ask people to respect the owl, respect distance. Just because you can get close, please don’t. Every time you flush it and move it, it uses energy. It’s not good for them to get bumped from perch to perch. When they’re not bothered by people, they stay in one place and conserve energy.”

The owls often hide during the day to avoid the attention of any other wouldbe attackers. Larger birds such as

eagles have been known to hunt and harass owls, and crows will mob them in large groups to try to scare them away.

“Depending on where they are, they could get flushed into traffic,” Weidensaul said. “If (the owl is) moving around a bit, that’s probably an indication you’re too close and should back off.”

“The trouble with snowy owls is they have so little fear of people, they can easily become habituated to people.

They think, ‘There’s my lunch ticket.’”

Once birds are not afraid of humans, they spend more time in human-frequented areas, leaving them susceptible to injury from cars, predators and

possible danger from other humans.

There are respectful ways to observe snowy owls: Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport is known to attract snowy owls every year, since the large, flat airfield resembles the owls’ home territory. As long as you don’t get too close, Weidensaul said it’s okay to go look for reported owls such as this one.

“As long as it’s not staring at you or trying to get away from you,” he said.

“Watching from a vehicle is great because they can’t see you and don’t notice you. A lot of the problem is not observers; it’s airplanes. (The owls) are at serious risk for getting hit by planes, and are a risk to planes themselves.”

When possible, wildlife authorities and airport managers trap and relocate owls like these to prevent harm to the animals and damage to the planes.

In addition to tracking owl movement, Project SNOWstorm is also studying the levels of mercury found in the snowy owl populations. At high enough levels, mercury could compromise the birds’ reproduction or even their behavior.

Over the years of working with the snowies, Weidensaul said the owls’ winter behavior continues to hold new surprises.

“We think of them as feeding on small mammals like lemmings, which is true in summer, but many that winter on the coast feed on ducks, grebes, loons and other waterbirds. Some adult owls are known to winter in the Arctic on sea ice. When the Great Lakes froze over, a number of owls moved out onto the frozen surfaces of Ontario and Erie and spent weeks at a time on the ice.

When we watched satellite images of the ice, we realized they focused on areas where prevailing winds were cracking the ice apart, and they were feeding on gulls and waterbirds. So these owls were sort of practicing behavior they might do as adults in the Arctic. That was really a cool discovery we got really excited about.”

Even for Weidensaul, the magic of seeing a snowy owl never goes away.

“They belong to another world,” Weidensaul said. “You’re not going to look out your window and see a polar bear strolling down the street, but (these owls) bring a piece of the Arctic with them.”

WINTER CARE TIPS FOR YOUR PETS

Exposure to winter’s dry, cold air and chilly rain, sleet and snow can cause chapped paws and itchy, flaking skin, but these aren’t the only discomforts pets can suffer.

Winter walks can become downright dangerous if chemicals from ice-melting agents are licked off of bare paws. To help prevent cold weather dangers from affecting your pet’s health, please heed the following advice from our experts:

Make sure your companion animal has a warm place to sleep, off the floor and away from all drafts. A cozy dog or cat bed with a warm blanket or pillow is perfect.

Remember, if it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your pet, so keep your animals inside. If left outdoors, pets can freeze, become disoriented, lost, stolen, injured or killed. In addition, don’t leave pets alone in a car during cold weather, as cars can act as refrigerators that hold in the cold and cause animals to freeze to death.

Like coolant, antifreeze is a lethal poison for dogs and cats.

Be sure to thoroughly clean up any spills from your vehicle, and consider using products that contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol.

Bathe your pets as little as possible during cold spells.

Washing too often can remove essential oils and increase the chance of developing dry, flaky skin. If your pooch must be bathed, ask your vet to recommend a moisturizing shampoo and/or rinse.

Massaging petroleum jelly or other paw protectants into paw pads before going outside can help protect from salt and chemical agents. Booties provide even more coverage and can also prevent sand and salt from getting lodged between bare toes and causing irritation. Use pet-friendly ice melts whenever possible.

Bring a towel on long walks to clean off stinging, irritated paws.

After each walk, wash and dry your pet’s feet and stomach to remove ice, salt and chemicals— and check for cracks in paw pads or redness between the toes.

Pets burn extra energy by trying to stay warm in wintertime.

Feeding your pet a little bit more during the cold weather months can provide much-needed calories, and making sure she has plenty of water to drink will help keep her well-hydrated and her skin less dry.

Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter, as a longer coat will provide more warmth.

If your dog is long-haired, simply trim him to minimize the clinging ice balls, salt crystals and deicing chemicals that can dry his skin and don’t neglect the hair between his toes. If your dog is short-haired, consider getting him a coat or sweater with a high collar or turtleneck with coverage from the base of the tail to the belly. For many dogs, this is regulation winter wear.

Repeatedly coming out of the cold into the dry heat of your home can cause itchy, flaking skin. Keep your home humidified and towel dry your pet as soon as he comes inside, paying special attention to his feet and in-between the toes. Remove any snow balls from between his foot pads. Cloth or rubber dog booties are a great way to protect your dog’s paws and prevent slipping, yet not all dogs will tolerate them.

There really is no sure answer. You can't judge the strength of ice just by its appearance, age, thickness, temperature or whether or not the ice is covered with snow. Strength is based on all these factors -- plus the depth of water under the ice, size of the water body, water chemistry and currents, the distribution of the load on the ice and local climatic conditions.

If you must drive a vehicle, be prepared to leave it in a hurry—keep windows down and have a simple emergency plan of action you have discussed with your passengers.

Ice auger. There are 3 different kinds of augers: hand, electric and gas. Hand augers are low cost, light weight and quiet.

Electric augers are also quiet, but use less manual labor than a hand auger. Gas augers drill through ice the fastest, but are heavier, noisier and generally more costly than hand or electric models. After drilling a hole with the ice auger, measure ice thickness with a tape measure.

Refrain from driving on ice whenever possible.

Cordless drill. Using a cordless drill and a long, five-eighths inch wood auger bit, you can drill through eight inches of ice in less than 30 seconds. Most cordless drills that are at least 7.2 volts will work, but the type of bit is critical. You need a wood auger bit since they have a spiral called a "flute" around the shaft that metal drilling bits don't. The flutes pull the ice chips out of the hole and help keep it from getting stuck, much in the way a full-sized ice auger works. After drilling a hole, measure ice thickness with a measure tape. Dry the bit and give it a quick spray of silicone lubricant after each use to prevent rust.

Stay away from alcoholic beverages. Even “just a couple of beers” are enough to cause a careless error in judgment that could cost you your life. And contrary to common belief, alcohol actually makes you colder rather than warming you up.

At even 30 miles per hour, it can take a much longer distance to stop on ice than your headlight shines. Many fatal snowmobile through-the-ice accidents occur because the machine was traveling too fast for the operator to stop when the headlamp illuminated the hole in the ice.

Don’t “overdrive” your snowmobile’s headlight.

Wear a life vest under your winter gear. Or wear one of the new flotation snowmobile suits. And it's a good idea to carry a pair of ice picks. CAUTION: Do NOT wear a flotation device when traveling across the ice in an enclosed vehicle.

Donated Christmas tree honors World War II vet

This holiday season was especially hard for the Bean family as they mourned the loss of their father, Ray Bean, a World War II veteran.

When the family received a donated Christmas tree from Coldwell Banker Burnet in North Oaks, they had no idea that it would act as a memorial tree.

Ray, 91, of Coon Rapids, passed away Dec. 14. Ray, a 36-year member of the American Legion, was a member of the Tri-City Legion in New Brighton until it closed and became a member at the Lino Lakes American Legion Post 566, where his son Rick, of Lino Lakes, had been a member for 11 years.

Ray was diagnosed with esophagus cancer on Good Friday of last year and was given three to four months to live if he didn’t pursue treatment. He decided to undergo radiation to buy a little more time with his family.

“We were thankful to get that extra time with him. We figured it was bonus time,” said his daughter Karen Iverson, of Shoreview.

Ray, originally of St. Paul, served in the U.S. Navy from July 8, 1944 until June 22, 1946. Rick said his father was a Quartermaster, or “the captain’s right-hand man.” Thankfully, Ray never saw combat; he was four weeks from deployment when Paul Tibbets Jr., a brigadier general of the U.S. Air Force, flew the Enola Gay and dropped Little Boy, the fi rst of two atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima, Japan.

Rick recalled in 2001 when Ray met

Tibbets. “We stood in line and got autographs from him. I remember my dad shaking his hand and saying thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Ray was married to Joan for 23 years. The two had three children Karen, Rick and Brian (who passed away in 1974). He later remarried to Bonnie, who had five children of her own, and were married for over 22 years.

Ray’s family describes him as a family man and said he always enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was also known to frequent Las Vegas.

Karen recalled her father stopped counting how many times he had been to Vegas after that number matched his age at 70.

The family knew this year would probably be Ray’s last Christmas.

Although he wasn’t able to celebrate Christmas, the family was thankful to have a Christmas tree to honor him.

In December, Rick and his wife were looking to buy a Christmas tree. Rick was at the Legion and saw a poster for free live Christmas trees. Dorothy Radermacher, Lino Lakes Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Chair, said three trees were donated to families locally, and she decided to give one to the family for Ray. For the past 15 years or so, the Bean family has gathered at Rick’s house for “Raymoan’s Christmas.”

Karen explained Raymoan was one of Ray’s nicknames. Originally the family wasn’t planning to have the celebration this year due to Ray’s deteriorating health, however it was decided the party would go on.
