Climate group makes New Year’s resolutions

Vadnais Heights resident Steve Jorissen retired early so he could raise awareness on climate change.

Jorissen, who worked at H.B. Fuller in Vadnais Heights for 30 years and has a Ph.D. in chemistry, is the leader of Northeast Metro Climate Action, a volunteer group that formed about a year ago.

“The primary mission is to raise awareness and do outreach within our communities,” Jorissen said. The group has 10 members from White Bear Lake, Vadnais Heights, Shoreview and North Oaks. “We are very active. We usually have one event and one planning meeting per month.” Members also spend time advocating before local politicians and volunteering.

The group was started

by Chuck Prentice, who has launched several other climate action groups across the Twin Cities metro.

Several months after it was launched, Jorissen joined and then stepped up to lead the northeast metro group.

“When I saw what they were doing with the events and speakers, I wanted to be a bigger part of this,” he remembered.

Jorissen’s interest in combatting climate change began when he was a junior at Hamline University in 1983. For his term presentation for his chemistry major, he chose to study the “greenhouse effect.”

“I looked at how the Arctic was warming faster than the rest of the globe,” he said.

was a year of generosity, philanthropy and stewardship for the Shoreview community.

The Mounds View Schools Education Foundation raised over $80,000 for the school community. The Shoreview Community Foundation added youth voice and votes to its board and raised over $50,000 at its annual dinner. The Arden Hills/Shoreview Lions Club held its first community event to raise funds for children’s programs. The Arden HillsShoreview Rotary Club is sponsoring a new sewing school in India. For 50 years, the North Suburban St. Paul Kiwanis Club has been making malts at the State Fair to raise funds for community and worldwide service projects for children.

The next generation is learning how to take care of the earth through planting for pollinators at Vadnais - Snail Lakes Regional Park. The city of Shoreview was honored by the League of Minnesota Cities for its water consumption and groundwater awareness project. Mounds View Public School’s levy, which will provide over $12 million of additional revenue, passed by district voters.

This year, the sheriff’s office reached a historical level of support by receiving nearly $20,000 in private grants for Shop with a Cop. Many other community members shared stories of reaching out and caring for their community and world. Actually, it was a typical year for the Shoreview community, which is consistently known for its philanthropy.

The production crew used a drone, like they did in the LaCroix video, to fi lm Kwan, who indicated she planned to post it on her Instagram account. They fi lmed in 10-minute intervals from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15. Temperatures were in the single digits, so Kwan took breaks to warm up. Whiterabbit said the crew did it pro bono because they're big fans.

Just a day earlier, the celebrity skater was in Des Moines campaigning for Joe Biden. The Des Moines Register said Kwan “gave some free pointers to ice skaters Saturday morning” in downtown Des Moines “before gliding effortlessly into a pitch” for the former vice president.

She joined his presidential campaign as surrogate director, a job she did in a similar capacity for former presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's campaign.

According to Whiterabbit, Kwan came to the Twin Cities to visit Marty Collins, the son of the late Tom Collins, a professional skater who founded the Champions on Ice tour.

The elder Collins died at his Edina home in September. Kwan starred on his tour along with former Olympians Brian Boitano, Nancy Kerrigan and Kristi Yamaguchi.

An Olympic figure skater graced an outdoor ice rink on White Bear Lake recently, bringing a fi lm crew along to capture the experience.

The celebrity skater, Michelle Kwan, was a surprise guest to Chad and Nicole Whiterabbit of Mahtomedi, who were referred by a friend to the fi lm crew, F3 Visuals.

F3 is a Minneapolis cinematography company that specializes in aerial (drone) footage. It is the same company that fi lmed a Mahtomedi High School grad, McQuaid Boo, skating on crystal clear ice near Ramsey County beach earlier this month. The video, called LaCroix on Ice, went viral. Last we checked, it had 175,000 views. Somehow Kwan saw it on Instagram and since she was in the area, decided to do her own version of skating on White Bear Lake. Only she was wearing figure skates.

At least, that's the story told by Chad Whiterabbit, who got a call from a friend asking if his rink was shoveled because Michelle Kwan was coming.

Kwan, 39, retired from competitive skating in 2006. She won two Olympic medals, a silver in ’98 and a bronze in ’02, plus five world championships.

She was very courteous, Whiterabbit said, and an incredible skater.

“You couldn't even hear her edges.”

The cold temperatures were a little edgy, though, and Kwan was freezing.

So Whiterabbit set up a heated ice shelter as a warming house.

“Ice conditions were really good,” added Whiterabbit, which was a reason Kwan and the crew came to his rink. And yes, it was shoveled; all three of his children play hockey and practice on the lake.

tion about how some scientists expected the Northwest Passage sea route through the Arctic Ocean to melt so much it would be open by 2050 and the Northeast Passage to open by 2100, his professor laughed.

“At the time that was inconceivable,” Jorissen said. “The ice north of Canada was 15 to 20 feet thick and no boat could go through other than an icebreaker,” he said. But today, you can book a cruise through the Northwest Passage. It has been open almost every summer since 2005. Some commercial boats can get through the Northeast Passage without the aid of an icebreaker.

“That is 85 years earlier than the alarmists were saying back in the ’80s,” he explained. “It is all happening very fast, faster than most scientists predicted. To see the inaction we’ve taken over the last 30 years is pretty hard to take.”

Now, Jorissen hopes he can influence others to each do the small part they can to combat climate change.

“Given the lack of action at the national level, we need to step up our efforts here to demonstrate to the rest of the U.S. and the world that these changes are economically advantageous, better for our nearterm health, and will provide a better world for our children and grandchildren,” Jorrisen noted.

It begins with understanding and then getting involved, he said. Northeast Metro Climate Action holds educational events once a month that anyone can attend. The group is also looking for more members from the northeast metro, from New Brighton to Mahtomedi. Other groups are forming further south and north, in Maplewood and Lino Lakes.

“Our future vision is to get at least four or five people from each of the communities we are in to work more locally with city governments and our elected representatives,” Jorissen said. For example, Jorissen, who has lived in Vadnais Heights for 27 years, has been meeting with Vadnais Heights community leaders to encourage the city to join GreenStep Cities, a state program that helps cities meet sustainability goals. Neighboring cities White Bear Lake, Shoreview and Mahtomedi are thriving in the program, Jorissen noted, and it would make sense for the city of Vadnais Heights to join as well.

“We need to act collectively as individuals and demand systemic changes from our policymakers,” Jorissen noted. “Minnesota has been one of the states leading the charge on transitioning to a clean energy economy.”

The public is invited to the group’s monthly speaker and fi lm events. The next event is 7 p.m. Jan. 13 at Ramsey County Library — Shoreview. Stan Sattinger of MN350 will present on farming, food and the climate crisis. Greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced by eliminating food waste and reducing the proportion of meat eaten or by purchasing meat produced in a certain manner. Sattinger will discuss ways people can take action on this.

Northeast Metro Climate Action will hold events with former news anchor Don Shelby and meteorologist Paul Douglas this winter and spring.

NORTHEAST METRO CLIMATE ACTION NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS Northeast Metro Climate Action shares New Year’s Resolutions with the community that will make a difference for the environment and help mitigate the effects of climate change. The list includes actions to drive systemic changes as well as individual actions to reduce carbon emissions. The list also includes resources to help with actions taken by individuals.

1. Talk about the climate crisis with friends and family — watch the Katharine Hayhoe TED Talk, “The most important thing you can do to fight climate change: talk about it.”

2. Learn more about the climate crisis — Go to climate.nasa.gov/ evidence for a short overview. To really dig in, sign up for Michael Mann’s Climate Science course on edX (it’s free) or read “The Uninhabitable Earth,” by David Wallace-Wells.

3. Learn about solutions to the climate crisis — read “Drawdown”

by Paul Hawken; go to drawdown.org to browse solutions.

4. Call or write your elected representatives and let them know you are concerned about the climate crisis. Find candidates for the upcoming elections who share your concerns about the climate crisis.

8. Resolve to eat less red meat (one pound of beef produces about 10 times the carbon emissions as one pound of chicken).

9. Compost organic waste — find an organics recycling center near you. Organic waste in a landfill decomposes to release methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Composting returns the carbon to the soil, where it is safely sequestered.

10. Resolve to reduce food waste. Americans discard 40% of the food produced in the U.S. Drawdown ranks food waste as the third-most impactful solution to the climate crisis.

5. Support local nonprofits such as Fresh Energy, MN350, Great Plains Institute and Environmental Initiative. National nonprofits for climate action include the Sierra Club, Citizens Climate Lobby and 350.org.

6. Make your home more efficient: Install a programmable thermostat. Make sure you have 12 inches (R-50) of insulation in your attic. Schedule a home energy audit at mncee.org. Replace all incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs. Wash less laundry and use cold water. When you need new appliances, buy appliances with the best EnergyStar ratings available.

Calendars help us plan

T

HIS TIME OF year our office receives a number of calendars of all sizes from various commercial and private organizations. They tell a story with words and pictures to help us plan and track important events.

The VFW – Veterans of Foreign Wars calendar for 2020 is an expanded edition. Within it explains what the VFW does for veterans. The list is long.

Throughout the months, there are dates and historic events relating to our military soldiers around the world.

Every month has a beautiful, historic picture with our flag flying and a quote. The one for October is showing an antique tractor in a harvest field.

The quote is by Teddy Roosevelt – “We dare to be great; and we must About the must realize that greatness is the fruit of toil and sacrifice and high courage.”

Town Also within the calendar is a listing Gene Johnson and explanation of campaign medals and the military service involved and qualifying dates. This is very helpful to a veteran and their family.

I’ve received a pretty landscape photo calendar from the Wounded Warrior Project covering 15 years of those who sacrificed. Their mission is to honor and empower wounded warriors. There is a lot of information about their generosity in action. Every month of the calendar has special quotes and explanations about wounded warriors re-entering our society and supporting each other.

The calendars arrive with letters inviting financial support. That’s no different than other charitable organizations who depend on donor support. The American Legion calendar for 2020 is entitled America The Beautiful, and each page has sentences from the song with illustrations of beautiful scenery, from amber waves of grain to the purple mountain majesties.

The calendar date squares are important dates to reflect on. The very back has a listing of what the American Legion does. This calendar is a beautiful piece.

The Wells Fargo 2020 calendar is a little larger in size, double that of most of them, and has more space to write in the date squares.

Throughout the calendar the historic stagecoach and the teams pulling it are pictured.

This year, the Boy’s Town calendar from Boy’s Town, Nebraska, features outdoor scenes of birds and flowers in a beautiful artistic form by artist Gene Sajsky, done in watercolor. The title is Subtle Shades of Nature.

Throughout the months, the calendar suggests ways that Boy’s Town can be helpful to families and children. The main theme is “Saving children, healing families.”

The calendar from the Reagan Ranch is beautifully centered around our former president, Ronald Reagan, and his California ranch. The quotes on each page are from his political years. It reminds me of how good a communicator he was.

Perhaps the one that struck me most was the Mayo Clinic 2020 calendar entitled The Road to Better Health.

Again, the pictures are attractive. The theme throughout is enhance your health with kindness.

Some of the copy within suggests that choosing to be kind is a healthy choice to make. Research shows that being kind to yourself and others can make your health and life better.

Throughout the calendar are ideas to help you add kindness and to practice this for yourself and others.

Each month has a title such as, January – Move, February – Relax, March – Eat Well, April – Maintain, May – Sleep – of course it doesn’t mean for the whole month! These are ideas that should be incorporated into our lifestyle.

When calendars arrive at your home or business, take time to study their message and presentation. It could make a difference for all of us in 2020.

Relaxing with kindness could be a very good thing in this presidential election year. Happy New Year.

Agriculture and climate: challenges and solutions THIRD IN A SERIES

Agriculture has been central to Minnesota’s economy and identity from the beginning. Currently, the state ranks fi fth in the nation in total agricultural production and is among the top 10 states in more than 20 commodities, including soybeans, sweet corn, sugar beets and turkeys.

Climate changes threaten the very foundation of this economic sector. Minnesota is on track for higher overall precipitation, with floods delaying spring planting. Yet, it will also experience warmer, drier conditions in late summer, “crisping” plants and threatening harvests. In addition to shrinking yield, rising atmospheric carbon dioxide and hot temperatures both affect crop quality. Levels of protein and mineral nutrients are lowered in food crops such as wheat, soybeans and rice. And higher temperatures and droughts can cause toxins to accumulate in plants and livestock, threatening the health of both animals and people.

Current “industrial” agriculture accounts for fully 25% of carbon emissions worldwide. The good news is that several of the same practices that would help farmers shield themselves from the worst climate impacts would also contribute substantially to emissions reduction.

At the Climate Reality Project training held in Minneapolis in early August, Professors Tracy Twine (University of Minnesota Department of Soil, Water and Climate) and Henry Pollack (University of Michigan Geophysics, emeritus)

described such “regenerative agriculture” practices. These methods include no-till/low-till agriculture, planting cover crops, intercropping and diversity, and rotational grazing.

During his address, Gov. Tim Walz lamented, “Minnesota’s leading export recently has been topsoil!” Plowing increases soil vulnerability to erosion by water or wind, both of which intensify with climate change. Twine and Pollack underscored the inherent value of black topsoil, which holds even more carbon than does vegetation—in fact, soil is the planet’s largest repository of carbon. When soils erode or are stressed by repeat plantings, their carbon is released into the atmosphere.

Twine urged individuals to regard soil as an intricate, living thing—comprising colonies of bacteria and fungi as well as minerals.

With regenerative agriculture, emissions are reduced because less fuel is demanded, and warming is mitigated as atmospheric carbon is captured and stored in the soil. Runoff is prevented, safeguarding water quality. And cover crops reduce or eliminate the need for nitrogen fertilizers.

Perennials (including clovers and kernza wheat) pull tons of carbon out of the atmosphere, year after year. These plants are deeply rooted, cover the earth and absorb nitrates, which protects water.

As with development of renewable fuels, Minnesota appears in the forefront of advancing regenerative agriculture and is home to a variety of public and private initiatives. The U of M’s Forever Green Initiative is one such program. Run in partnership with the USDA, the initiative works

to develop perennial crops (like kernza and sunflower), winter annual crops (barley, pennycress) and native woody crops (hazelnuts, elderberries).

Such crops work synergistically to enhance both soil and water quality while offering habitat.

A second organization, the Northfield-based Main Street Project, has as its goal a “poultry-centered regenerative agro-forestry system.” It seeks to incorporate free-range poultry (and perennial native crops like hazelnuts and elderberries) into a sustainable regional food system—one accessible to aspiring farmers with limited resources, such as young people and immigrants. Main Street has established prototype facilities (open to the public) and is developing a 100-acre demonstration farm. Interestingly, Main Street funders include not only government agencies but also corporations such as BlueCross/Blue Shield and Allina Health.

A third Minnesota-based organization, the Regenerative Agriculture Alliance, is international in scope and membership. It aims to follow the “natural blueprint of animal and vegetation habits” for both environmental health and higher productivity. Working in co-operation with the Main Street Project, the group assists with regenerative training, marketplace development and land access. Another of its many dimensions is indigenous knowledge recovery.

Rita Erickson, PhD, is a White Bear Lake native now living in Scandia. This article is the third in a series of five, based on Erickson’s participation in Climate Reality Project training. The fourth will focus on “Environmental and Social Justice.”

The Minnesota Council on Economic Education (MCEE) honored Michelle Morse-Wendt with the Rising Star in Economic Education Award (Grades K-8) during a staff meeting at Turtle Lake Elementary. The Rising Star in Economic Education Award recognizes newer teachers who show a commitment to economic education and professional growth.

“I like the awareness students develop about how things are interconnected and how their actions affect the whole,” said Morse-Wendt about teaching economics. She began her teaching career at Turtle Lake Elementary in the Mounds View District in 2009. Following nine years working in fi fth grade, this is her second year teaching fourth grade.

• Schmitt Music delivered 16 new instruments to Mounds View Public Schools last month as part of the Schmitt Music Challenge, a community fundraiser. This challenge was set in place last fall during Rock the School House, the annual fundraising event for the Mounds View Schools Education Foundation (MVSEF). Schmitt Music challenged attendees and foundation supporters to raise funds in exchange for new instruments. For every $5,000 raised by the foundation, Schmitt Music donated a new instrument to Mounds View Public Schools. And when Rock the School House raised more than $80,000 last fall, the challenge was met and a total of 16 instruments were donated.

• The history Shore-Oaks Dairy Queen, owned and operated by Norman and Carolyn Espersen, broke ground for their store at 4615 Hodgson Road, Shoreview, in 1973. Norman, a husband and father of five (Bonnie, Cindy, Mike, Mark and Larry) worked in the food industry for years with his father and brother.

• Reconstruction of North Owasso Boulevard is expected to get underway this year — a $6.4 million project. The City Council unanimously ordered the reconstruction project that comes on the tail end of the reconstruction of Lake Owasso County Park. The project is expected to be finished, along with the new Rice Street bridge interchange, in November 2020.

• The 2019 Shoreview Heritage Family remembers its history, as told by Sharon Radmann: “As members of a large family, we never thought about the word “vacation” until the summer of 1958....The fi rst day of our fi rst vacation, we started on our long journey from Roseville to Shoreview. Dad made it seem like a long trip by driving around until we were certain we had left the country. We always felt sorry

for Dad, as he had such a long trip to go to work every day. The truth is, he worked just about three miles away from home. We arrived at beautiful Turtle Lake and our itty-bitty cabin. We felt like settlers....We just happened to be at the lake when the neighbors, George and Betty Hilgert, were placing a “For Sale” sign down on Lexington Avenue. My Dad picked up the sign, carried it to them and said, “Sold.”

• The Holy Hammers, a group of volunteers from northeast metro churches, has been pounding hammers for Habitat for Humanity for 20 years. Volunteers started this year’s 10-week project on Whitall Street in St. Paul earlier this month despite the April snowfall. The Holy Hammers started 20 years ago with volunteers from several churches. It now includes 15 churches in Shoreview, White Bear Lake, Circle Pines, Roseville, Falcon Heights and New Brighton.

• Several school building renovations are underway in Mounds View Public Schools. At Island Lake Elementary, construction has begun. By next school year, the media center, special education area and six classrooms will be renovated. The new classrooms will have lockers inside the rooms to clear up the hallways, Wold Architects representative Paul Aplikowski told the school board last month. Nooks created by the new space in the hallways will be used for small group learning, he added. The new classrooms will have flexible, movable furniture, he said. A furniture design committee has assisted the district in making furniture decisions for the renovated spaces. Funding was provided by the district’s $156.5 million bond referendum approved by voters in 2017.

• Wildlife photographer Debbie Hartmann has been photographing the trumpeter swans that gather on the open water in Vadnais-Sucker Lake Regional Park during the winter for eight years. She was surprised when she ran across a dead one lying in the snowy woods this February.

Three weeks later, in early March, she found three dead swans on the ice on Sucker Lake.

Hartmann reported the perished swans to the Vadnais Lake Area Water Management Organization (VLAWMO). Dawn Tanner, program development coordinator, began to monitor the swans. She retrieved four dead swans over several

• A group of Mounds View High School students is organizing a community walk to bring mental health awareness and suicide prevention into the light. National Honor Society co-presidents Nate Moller and Chris Jin were inspired to initiate the walk after they and other students attended an American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) Out of the Darkness walk earlier this school year.

“It really showed how the whole community can come together,” Moller said. They and other senior National Honor Society students organizing the event hope the Mounds View Public Schools community will come together in the same way in May at Long Lake Regional Park in New Brighton. The Out of the Darkness walk will raise funds for AFSP to support those affected by mental illnesses.

• There are warning signs when a teen is at risk of being trafficked.

Professionals who have worked with trafficking victims will present on prevention tips during Trafficking Justice’s Freedom Weekend, which includes an event at the Shoreview Community Center in May. The Shoreview event is hosted by Emmanuel Covenant Church. The church, which meets at the community center on Sundays, had a sermon

series on trafficking last fall, said Bekah Backman, director of outreach.

• Island Lake Elementary’s kitchen manager, Jessica Pena, was named one of six regional managers of the year in the U.S. this month.

Pena was named the state winner earlier this year and was then surprised by a visit from Minnesota School Nutrition Association (MNSNA) President Amy Thering, who carried a tiara when she announced that Pena was the Midwest Regional Manager of the Year.

JUNE • Northeast metro adults are among those fi nding their path to encore careers in the University of Minnesota’s new Advanced Careers Initiative (UMAC) led by Shoreview resident Kate Schaefers.

UMAC is like a gap year for adults retiring from longtime careers or transitioning to new ones, explained Schaefers. The focus is on fi nding a pathway to social impact by using professional skills, whether paid or volunteer. Fellows participate as mentors in undergraduate classes and do a “midternship” (midlife internship focused on using professional skills) with a nonprofit. This school year was the fi rst year of the full-fledged program.

There were 16 fellows who graduated May 15. Shoreview resident Lisa Mattson did her midternship with Second Harvest Heartland.

• The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office has seen an increase in home and vehicle burglary within the last weeks in North Oaks, Shoreview, Vadnais Heights and White Bear Township. The common middle-of-the-night tactic being used by a group of

perhaps 20 suspects is to enter a vehicle, use the garage door opener to get inside the garage and then attempt to enter the home through a service door, said Sheriff Bob Fletcher.

• For the fi rst time, astronauts have used CRISPR/Cas9 technology to edit DNA in space — and Mounds View High School students were part of it. This Genes in Space study represents the fi rst demonstration of genetic modification of living organisms in space, a crucial milestone in the development of complete molecular biology workflows on orbit.

• From pharmacies to public safety buildings, there are several places to drop off unused drugs and pills in northern Ramsey County. The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office collected and turned into energy 11,232 pounds of unused medicine in 2018, said Randy Gustafson, communications coordinator. It’s been collecting drugs and pills for nearly a decade now.

The school board elected Danielson to serve the remainder of board member Amy Jones’s term. Jones recently announced her resignation from the School Board after nearly eight years of service. The board interviewed six candidates for the position.

• The city of Shoreview received a Sustainable City Award from the League of Minnesota Cities in June.

The city was honored for its “Water Consumption and Groundwater Awareness Project.” Shoreview was also named a Step 5 city in the Minnesota GreenStep Cities program.

• Saturday, July 20, marked the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon

landing. On that day, in 1969, the Lunar Module Eagle, which carried Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, made contact with the surface of the moon while Michael Collins piloted the command module, Columbia, in lunar orbit. As Armstrong stepped out onto the moon, he uttered what have since become immortal words: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

• Slice of Shoreview attendees can participate in free activities with several mobile artists at the city festival this year. Artists will be at Slice offering the opportunity to learn about letterpress, wooden sign painting and metal casting. For the less artistic and more active, there will be a traveling ping pong table.

• While driving, Minnesotans should ensure that their hands remain on their wheels—and not on their phones. Holding a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle is now illegal in Minnesota, as the hands-free cellphone bill, signed by Gov. Tim Walz in April, took effect Aug. 1.

• Gov. Tim Walz said he was pleased with how the Legislature compromised for the good of Minnesota this session but is not yet satisfied because the state left several important issues unsolved this year. These include roads, climate change and gun violence. Yet, Walz was proud of standing with the House and Senate majority leaders at the end of the session to say they came up with a pretty good solution on the state’s budget. Walz, a Democrat, was leading the country’s only split state Legislature; the Minnesota House majority is Democrat and the Senate majority is Republican. He said he was criticized for giving Republican Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka credit for the budget, but he is still proud of working together.

• A levy referendum for Mounds View Public Schools that would more than double the amount of funding per student will be on the ballot for district residents Nov. 5. The tax impact would be $28 per month for a median-valued home of $275,000. The school board unanimously approved a resolution calling for the vote at its August meeting.

• You might not know it to look at it — that is, if you even dare to drive along it these days because of the Ramsey County Rice Street bridge construction project — but a lot of interesting history is buried along that stretch of road west of Vadnais Lake that runs south over I-694 directly into Little Canada and Shoreview.

After Vadnais Heights was founded in the 1840s by French Canadian farming families along the east shore of Vadnais Lake (today’s Edgerton Street and Centerville Road intersection), other families followed, not only to farm around Vadnais Lake and nearby but also to create new businesses. One of those families — the Basil and Celine Ste. Marie family — ran a boarding house beginning in the 1880s on the east side of Rice Street.

sey County Attorney’s Office and members of the Minnesota Human Trafficking Investigators Task Force, a panel member received a serendipitous text. “A 17-year-old girl just texted me that she is still doing okay,” said St. Paul Police Sgt. John Linssen, who is part of the task force and investigates trafficking cases across the state.

The girl was at a shelter, staying in one of the 60 beds statewide reserved for juvenile trafficking victims and funded by Minnesota’s Safe Harbor Program. Without the shelter, the girl would likely be back with her trafficker since her home is not safe either, Linssen added.

• For 50 years, the North Suburban St. Paul

Kiwanis Club has been making malts to raise funds for community and worldwide service projects for children. The club has raised more than $2 million since it started a philanthropic malt shop at the State Fair in 1969, said club member and Shoreview resident Todd Levig. The malt shop started as a stand next to the old dairy building at the fair, which had moved to a southern location in 1968, according to a historical article in Focus News. Dick Bonde, then club member and dairy specialist at Land O’ Lakes, thought fairgoers should still be able to get a dairy product near Machinery Hill. The cost of a malt the club’s first year was 50 cents.

OCTOBER • The city of Shoreview takes great pride in its reputation as a welcoming and vibrant community set within a natural landscape. Now, the city has a new look to match. The City Council accepted and rolled out a new city logo and brand at its Oct. 7 meeting. The logo, designed by Peters Design Company, represents the natural landscape within the city featuring trees and water. While the new logo has a modern design, it has a timeless quality that was influenced by the city’s previous looks. It can also be used across a number of design platforms.

“We are excited to reveal the refreshed look for the city as we get ready to move into a new decade,” said Mayor Sandy Martin. “The new brand will improve the city’s visibility and allow us to effectively communicate with our residents and visitors.”

• Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office patrol deputies began using body cameras Sept. 27. All patrol deputies in White Bear Township, Vadnais Heights and Shoreview will now wear them at all times.

Deputies will turn on their cameras when they respond to a call or an incident, said Sheriff Bob Fletcher during a press conference at the Arden Hills Patrol Station Sept. 27. Incidents include any interaction with residents that require police action, such as traffic stops, Fletcher explained. The implementation of body cameras for patrol deputies is phase one of the office’s plans to get body cameras for all 400 of its staff, Fletcher said. In October, deputies in the courts and civil process divisions will receive cameras. Later this year, correctional officers who work at the jail will receive them.

• A felony conviction can affect the rest of your life.

After serving their time, many people with felony convictions on their record have a hard time reestablishing their lives — driving, finding a job and a place to stay, and paying off court fees. Several ex-offenders discussed the difficulties of leaving their felony drug-related records behind at a criminal justice reform forum held at the Ramsey County Library – Shoreview this month.

“When you are trying to reestablish a life out here, you have all these things chipping away at you,” said Marlin Meszaro, reentry coordinator at FreedomWorks, a nonprofit that helps ex-offenders reenter life after prison. Meszaro was formerly incarcerated himself; he said he doesn’t look like someone who has 13 felonies on his record.

• Once touted as a safer alternative to smoking, vaping has come under increased scrutiny, particularly

as reports of lung illnesses potentially linked to the practice have surged throughout both the U.S. and Minnesota. As of Oct. 1, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had confirmed 1,080 lung injury cases associated with vaping nationwide, including 18 deaths—one of which took place in Minnesota. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has reported 55 confirmed or probable cases of severe lung injuries tied to vaping.

NOVEMBER • Mounds View Public School’s levy, which will provide $12 million of additional revenue, passed by district voters. 60.81%, or 8,820, voted yes and 39.19%, or 5,684, voted no. The referendum will increase the amount of funding per student. The levy will specifically enable the district to address mental health concerns and school security. The referendum would also enable the district to expand its career pathways programs and bolster its general fund.

• The newly elected Ramsey County Commissioner for District 1 is Nicole Joy Frethem, of Shoreview. Frethem won the Nov. 5 election by a small margin, gaining about 52% of the votes. She will fi ll the seat vacated

by Shoreview resident Blake Huffman earlier this year. “I’m profoundly grateful to all of those who helped us win this election: the supporters, volunteers, donors, and my amazing

staff and core team,” Frethem announced after the election.

• Washington County Attorney Pete Orput and Ramsey County Attorney John Choi announced a transformative effort to help people move beyond the barriers and collateral consequences associated with past involvement with the justice system. After completing their sentence and any applicable waiting period, rehabilitated people who have a criminal record in Washington or Ramsey counties will be able to go to www.helpsealmyrecord.org to apply to seal their criminal record and alleviate the collateral consequences that follow a criminal conviction — some of which can last a lifetime.

• More than 300 parents, district staff, community leaders and volunteers were rockin’ earlier this month at the Mounds View Schools Education Foundation’s (MVSEF) Rock

“Our eighth annual event was an unqualified success,” said Erik Rasmussen, chairman of the MVSEF Board of Trustees. “The energy in the room was high, coming off of the passing of the levy, and supporters demonstrated their belief in the district and our mission by stepping up in a meaningful way.”

• Tim Pratt is the 2019 Shoreview Citizen of the Year. Mayor Sandy Martin and the City Council presented Pratt with the award at the annual volunteer appreciation event this month. He has served on the Environmental Quality Committee (EQC) since 2004 and is a leading advocate for protecting and improving the environment. Martin and the Human Rights Commission also presented Xi (Jimmy) Xiao with the 2019 Caring Youth Award.

• When polar explorer Will Steger heard the news, he couldn’t believe it, but knew it was real: The 1,250-square-mile ice shelf he had crossed in Antarctica by dog sled had collapsed into the sea. “It caught me by surprise,” Steger told an audience gathered at the Shoreview Community Foundation’s annual dinner last month. Steger had been standing on the ice shelf a decade before. It was the moment when Steger knew it was time to focus his energies on education, not just exploration.

“That was my wake-up call,” he said.

• The Shoreview Community Foundation Evening with Friends dinner raised $54,000. The funds will be used to give grants to projects in the community.

• Finance Director Fred Espe presented the 2020 city budget and tax levy prior to the public hearing at the Dec. 2 council meeting. The proposed tax levy will increase by 5.4%, from $12.1 million in 2019 to $12.8 million in 2020. Most of that increase will go to the city’s general fund — $640,000 of the approximately $663,000 increase.

• Recycling will soon become easier and more convenient for Shoreview residents. Eureka Recycling will provide weekly curbside recycling pickup beginning Dec. 30. Pickup days will remain the same for all residents — bins should be placed on the curb by 6 a.m. on recycling day.

• The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office hosted its annual holiday tradition of Shop with a Cop earlier this month. This year, the sheriff’s office reached a historical level of support by receiving nearly $20,000 in private grants for Shop with a Cop, more than any year previously. There were 74 youth who participated and shopped for more than 220 family members. Over 80 sheriff’s office employees and volunteers donated their time and talents to this event.

Mounds View boys basketball took a 9-0 record into New Year’s and broke into the Top 20 after winning the Coon Rapids holiday tournament Dec. 27-28.

The Mustang topped Rosemount 58-50 in the first game. Most of the offense came from junior guard Evan Kim with 22 points and senior center Thomas Gebhardt with 15 points.

Noah Loehr sank 15 points and Sean Sullivan 12 for Rosemount (5-2), which has the best record of any team the Mustangs have faced this year.

In the championship game, the Mustangs thumped Coon Rapids 70-52. Kim tallied 20 points, Gebhardt 18, sophomore guard Dylan Wheeler 13 and junior guard Cole Sorenson seven. Jackson Aurelius led the Cardinals (3-5) with 14.

The Mustangs were ranked No. 18 by Minnesota Basketball News last week.

They played at White Bear Lake on Tuesday and will play at Stillwater on Friday evening.

Top five scorers in their balanced offense are Kim, averaging 14.6 points, Wheeler 11.5, Gebhardt 10.9, Sorenson 10.2 and junior forward John Montgomery 8.6.

The Mounds View Nordic team is breaking in almost two dozen new skiers after 18 members of last year’s squad graduated. “We are in a heavy rebuilding year, and haven’t placed well in our meets,” coach Julie Garretson reported. “We recruited 22 new skiers, including many middle schoolers.” Thanks to a big storm just after Thanksgiving, the fi rst few meets have been held as scheduled, which usually doesn’t happen. “The team has been very excited about the plentiful natural snow,” Garretson said. The Mustang captains are seniors Maya Strike and Laken Hairston and junior Aurora Weirens. Other varsity veterans are senior Kai Poecher, junior Katia Bartels, sophomore Harrison Smith and freshman Brynn Mill.

Brendan Dunagan, Mounds View senior wrestler, has a 20-4 record at 160 pounds this year, with 95 career wins. In two huge multiple-state tournaments, he placed third at the Minnesota Christmas Tournament in Rochester (41 schools) and fifth at the Rumble on the Red in Fargo (58 schools). Dunagan went 29-3 last year and qualified for state. He was an all-district linebacker on the Mustangs’ 8-3 football team this fall.

“Our team is a bit bigger this season with a lot of new ski racers,” said coach Eric Saari, adding that his top skiers to watch are Amiina Ingah and Kale Johnson. The fi rst SEC meet was held Tuesday at Afton Alps and the next meet will be Thursday at Wild Mountain.

“I think they give as much to us as we give to them,” Johnson said.

Volunteering at the church shelter is an option that is open to anyone in the community, Johnson said; volunteers don't have to be a member of the church to participate.

The day center is also in need of volunteers on an ongoing basis.

Three riders have died so far this winter and there have been other close calls, including snowmobiles that have gone through the ice and an instance in which a person was hit while walking on the ice. Last winter, 10 riders lost their lives in snowmobile-related crashes, five died the year before and three people died in 2015-16.

“We want people enjoying the Minnesota winter, but we want them to do it safely,” said Bruce Lawrence, recreational vehicle coordinator with the DNR’s Enforcement Division.

Snow cover throughout Minnesota, including on many of the 22,000 miles of trails that traverse the state (varying local conditions mean not all are yet groomed), have led to a surge in the number of people taking advantage of a fun and unique way to enjoy Minnesota’s outdoors.

“Passing along your passion for the outdoors is one of the greatest gifts you can give another person,” he said. “By modeling safe behavior, you can ensure that passion lives on in youngsters and new snowmobile riders.”

Lawrence offers the following tips to ensure a safe ride: • Stay on marked trails. The state’s snowmobile clubs work hard to keep trails in good riding

condition. Riders who stay on groomed trails are less likely to strike an obstacle or trespass onto private property. In parts of the state, wet conditions where trails go through low areas or across lakes mean trails aren’t yet groomed. Riders should plan ahead and check trail conditions before heading out.

• Leave the booze at home. Drinking and riding is one of two main factors in crashes, and plays a role in about 60% of those that are fatal.

• Watch the speed. Going too fast is the other main factor in crashes. Many serious and fatal crashes occur when a speeding snowmobiler loses control or strikes an object.

• Be careful on the ice. During the past two winters, every through-the-ice fatality but one has involved people who were riding a snowmobile or all-terrain vehicle when they fell through. There must be at least 5 to 7 inches of new, clear ice to support the weight of a snowmobile and rider.

• Take a snowmobile safety course. It’s required of anyone born after 1976 and recommended for everyone. People with snowmobile safety certification are less likely to be involved in serious or fatal crashes.

either go to work or search for jobs at the day center.

The day center, located in First Baptist Church downtown St. Paul, was just opened this fall.

It provides a place where parents can work toward stability.

Meals, laundry and showers are provided on site, and clients are provided with support toward employment and fi nding stable housing.

Clients are referred to Project Home through Ramsey County. Common client causes for homelessness include home foreclosures or losing a job, Franklin said. There is no time limit on how long clients can stay at the traveling shelter, but they usually stay for an average of three months.

Project Home, a program of Interfaith Action of Greater Saint Paul, has been using the model of a traveling shelter at churches since it began 20 years ago. The volunteers provided by each church reduce the cost of staff that would be needed to operate the shelter.

Carole Hennig said she volunteers out of empathy. “I do it because I feel we are all one or two paychecks away from this happening to us,” she said. “None of us is above this.”

Hagen concurs. She went through a time when she was close to

The church, located just off Highway 61 in White Bear Lake, hosts Project Home, a traveling shelter, every December. It rotates to other churches across Ramsey County every month of the year. Two churches host each month.

Hosting the shelter takes about 200 shifts of volunteers, said church member Lynne Hagen. She volunteers in the evening to prepare snacks, greet the guests and play with the children.

Gary Johnson is an overnight host. He ensures the building stays safe overnight and prepares breakfast. He's been volunteering for 10 years and stays overnight at the church many nights each December.

“I usually sleep on a couch,” he said, motioning to the couches in the church community-roomturned-shelter, “or a cot, like the guests.”

Guests sleep on cots behind partitions in the community room or in other rooms that have been transformed into a temporary shelter.

In the morning, the guests are bused to the Project Home Day Center in St. Paul, said Donna Franklin, senior site coordinator.

From there, children get on their bus to go to wherever they were attending school before they became homeless.
