As each year comes to an end, it is a tradition of the Shoreview Press to highlight some of the most memorable stories of the year. How our lives changed from January through December. The dominant headline of the year was the COVID-19 pandemic. Every issue of the

Shoreview Press from the middle of March through today reported the various ways COVID-19 impacted our communities. Families lost loved ones, community events were canceled, and many local businesses had to close. The killing of George Floyd in our neighboring city Minneapolis and the 2020 election were other major headlines that deeply affected

our readers. These stories and more prompted readers to share their opinions on our editorial pages throughout the year, perhaps to a greater extent than ever before.

Although 2020 brought its fair share of challenges, the news wasn’t all bad.

Some of the other top stories in 2020 included: unique ways to celebrate birthdays, prom, graduation

and the holidays; the many makers; teachers pivoting to distance learning; efforts to boost local restaurants; non-profits stepping up to help those in need; theatre productions, art classes, history and educational programs, fundraisers and other events held online or live-streamed; new leadership in city councils; outdoor recreation; and much more.

The stories and photos published throughout the year bring home the value of a community newspaper.

It is news and information readers won’t find anywhere else.

Shoreview native competes on new ABC game show When a new game show airs this week, Shoreview residents may spot a familiar face among the lineup of contestants.

building a collective prize pot that increases with each correct answer. The catch? One of the five contestants, the Hustler, already knows the answers, as the questions are based on their life.

“The questions are somehow related to their life, whether it's their jobs, their interests, where they live, any of that kind of

stuff,” Hershey explained. But the Hustler has to keep their identity a secret from the other contestants to have a shot at the grand prize. “If the other contestants can figure out who the Hustler is, then they split the money. If not, then the Hustler leaves with all of it.”

That twist, Hershey said, makes for a fun and unique experience.

“You're not only answering questions and trying to make as much money as possible, you're also trying to read each other and figure out who might be lying,” she said. “It's an interesting take on a regular game show. It has almost like a murder mystery or Clue vibe, because (the set) is supposed to look like an old library or study.”

This is not Hershey's first foray into the world of television game shows. In 2017, she and her family were on an episode of “Family Feud.” They did not end up winning, but Hershey did sing a duet with host Steve Harvey during the show.

Hershey's “Family Feud” appearance helped open the door to “The Hustler,” she said.

“Normally, you fill out an application for game shows, but with this one, they called me … Every two years, you can be on a new game show, so when my two-year contract with ‘Family Feud’ was up, I started applying to a bunch of different game shows,” she explained.

She made it through a few rounds of auditions for various

shows, but never heard back. Then she got a call from producers who had seen her audition tape for another show and asked if she would be interested in “The Hustler.”

“I was like, ‘Sure, but I don't really know what it is,’ and they said they were looking for people who are either really good at lying or can spot a liar. I said, “Well, I'm a teacher.

I spot liars every day,” said Hershey, who teaches business and marketing at Robbinsdale Cooper High School. “I've learned a lot of the tells and how to figure out if people are fibbing.”

After a Skype interview and two rounds of auditions, Hershey was selected for the show and flew to Los Angeles for taping last winter.

“We filmed this episode December 2019, so it's been over a year, which is kind of crazy. It was originally going to air in the summer, and then COVID pushed it back,” Hershey said. “But filming was a really quick process. They essentially called me on a Monday at 5:00 in the afternoon, and said 'Hey, we're flying you out.' I flew out Tuesday morning, competed on Wednesday and flew back to Minnesota on Thursday. I was maybe in Los Angeles for 36 hours. It was not long at all.”

Shoreview's Caring Youth Award is traditionally given at the city’s annual Volunteer Appreciation Event, but the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic meant the 2020 celebration was canceled. This year's honoree, Anna Grace Hottinger, may have been recognized with less of the usual fanfare, though with no less gratitude, according to Mayor Sandy Martin.

Hottinger was formally presented with the 2020 Caring Youth Award during the Dec. 21 City Council meeting. A junior at EdVisions Off Campus, a charter school in St. Paul, Hottinger is an active proponent of issues related to climate justice and tobacco prevention.

When Tobacco 21 was in front of the Shoreview City Council in spring 2018, Hottinger organized students to speak at a council meeting in favor of the policy, which raised the legal age to buy tobacco and related products from 18 to 21.

In passing the policy, Shoreview became the fi rst city in the northeast metro to restrict young adult tobacco sales.

Hottinger was also named a National Youth Ambassador by the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids. She is also active

Hottinger credited her mother and her grandparents for instilling in her a love of volunteering and teaching her how to use her passions and resources to help others.

“This is a great honor to get this award, and I just wanted to thank all of the amazing adult leaders who have helped me get here and also the incredible youth in our own community who have helped support me and are also very, very passionate (in) doing this work,” she said as she accepted the award.

When asked what her favorite part of volunteering is, Hottinger said it is working with others. “There is nothing more satisfying and fulfilling to know that you have helped other people find something they love,” she said.

HE NEW YEAR is underway and we hope and pray the pandemic will end soon.

Vaccinations are underway but it will take several months before the majority of the population has been treated. It may be necessary to use masks for the next two years. They will reduce the spreading of other diseases as well.

SKIP THE RESOLUTIONS and set realistic goals for yourself and family.

Couples can make their list separately and later compare them and discuss more ideas.

Vacation plans, books to read, added education, home projects, retirement plans, volunteer work and health and wellness plans can all enhance the quality of life’s purpose.

MY NIECE AND her About the husband moved from Ocala, Florida to Union Town Lake near Fertile, Gene Johnson Minnesota. This was a major loss to us at Thanksgiving time in Florida. Cynthia is an excellent cook and especially a pie-baker. Feeling a little nostalgic I called them at their lake home and expressed my disappointment of not being with them for Thanksgiving. Lo and behold, three days before Christmas Perkins restaurant delivered a lemon meringue and cherry pie to our marina in Ft. Myers. Kathy and I were delighted and the pies were excellent.

THIS WAS THE fi rst Christmas in 52 years that our family was not together. Gifts arrived by mail, Zoom conversations took place with each of the children, grandchildren and great grand children, and emails, cards, letters and phone calls kept us in contact with family and friends.

A few days before Christmas a large box of Scandinavian taste treats arrived from Rushford, Minnesota, compliments of our daughter, Stephanie, and son-in-law, Chuck. It included lefse, anise cookies, lingonberries, hard tack, flatbrod and Nordic sweets. This heightened my desire for Lutefisk. Thus, the search began. A small Scandinavian shop in Ft. Myers saved the day and we came home with two packages of Lutefisk, approximately four pounds.

Full of excitement I called friends to plan the day of the feast.

OUR CHILDREN HAVE advised us to answer the unidentified phone calls with “good morning” or “good afternoon” instead of the usual, “hello.” It trips up their automated answering service and causes delay of their message. When the pause occurs just hang up. So far it hasn’t prevented them from calling back.

4. Never in a million years could I have imagined I would go up to a bank teller wearing a mask and asking for money. 5.

Relaxed one-pot weeknight meals During the week I don’t want to spend my time sweating over a fancy multi pot dinner when I could be doing a million other things. December is a busy time of year.

Let’s get this out of the way.

Food is my thing—it’s what I do.

I enjoy every aspect of baking, cooking, creating, curating, and tasting. But there is a threshold and it involves dishes, time, and stress.

My family loves a good meal, Wild but we all hate doing the dishes Chow and spending a bunch of time Lisa Erickson in the kitchen on a weeknight.

Everyone is busy with work, college homework, working out, or spending time doing some of our favorite hobbies.

Long drawn-out meals usually don’t work.

Recently, I’ve been thinking about meals and food differently. I am reading a book called The Art of Gathering by Priya Parker. In her book, Parker suggests thinking

Lentil Soup Adapted from Ina Garten Serves 4 8 oz. lentils, brown or green 3 tbsp. olive oil, 3 cups chopped yellow onions (2 to 3 onions) 1 garlic clove, minced ½ tsp. dried thyme ¼ teaspoon cumin ½ tsp. salt and freshly ground Black pepper

2 cups celery, chopped 2 cups carrots, chopped 8 cups chicken stock 3 tbsp. tomato paste ½ pound good quality sausage, like kielbasa or polish sausage, cut into small pieces Freshly grated Parmesan cheese, for serving In a large bowl, pour 4 cups of boiling water over the lentils. Let the lentils rest for 15 minutes.

Strain and set aside.

In a large pot, over medium heat, cook the onion in the olive oil until soft and tender; about 5-7 minutes.

Add the garlic, thyme, cumin, salt, and pepper, celery, and carrots; cook for another 10 minutes until the vegetables are tender, stirring occasionally. Add the chicken stock, tomato paste, and lentils; bring to a simmer. Reduce the heat and simmer for 30 minutes.

In a small fry pan, over mediumhigh heat, cook the sausage pieces until lightly browned on each side.

Add to the soup and cook for 30 more minutes. Serve with grated Parmesan cheese and crusty bread.

It got me thinking about “why” we eat and share meals.

The number one reason is to fi ll our bellies, but there’s a lot more happening at “dinner” than just eating. It’s a time to check-in with your family and hear about their day, share stories, and support one another.

It also got me thinking about what it’s not. It’s not a time to add stress, recipe test, or experiment.

During the week, it’s a time to eat a tasty and healthy meal while spending some “relaxed” time together—that’s it.

This recipe is very good and easy to make. It’s hearty and uncomplicated. It’s the perfect meal to set the stage for good family conversation.

Anyone interested in improving access to wildlife management areas (WMAs) for people with disabilities can share their ideas online with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. “We want to hear how we can improve recreational opportunities and reduce barriers on WMAs,� said David Trauba, southern region wildlife manager. “Public lands are for all Minnesotans, including those with disabilities.�

People can share their input now through Friday, Jan. 22, on the DNR’s community engagement page at engage.dnr.state.mn.us/fisheries-public-inputwildlife-public-input.

The DNR will use the input to shape recommendations the agency will make to the Minnesota Legislature in February about increasing accessibility to WMAs. The DNR continues to work closely with the Minnesota Council on Disability and others to identify ways to increase access to the state wildlife lands. Legislation championed by Rep. Dan Fabian and signed into law by Gov. Tim Walz this year requires the DNR to make it easier for people with disabilities to access WMAs and publicize access opportunities.

The DNR manages a system of 1.3 million acres of land in about 1,500 WMAs. This land is open to everyone for a variety of outdoor activities, including hunting and trapping, fishing, wildlife watching and nature photography.

PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEF DPS asks public to make care packages for homeless

To help those who are experiencing homelessness, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) will again create and provide “Care on the Go� packages with basic necessities including toiletries and clothing items. These packages will be handed out by the State Patrol, staff from other DPS divisions, and local law enforcement agencies (who wish to participate) when they encounter someone who is homeless throughout the year, but especially during the winter season.

Along with DPS employees, the agency is asking the public to help by donating the following items to fi ll the packages: • White T-shirts (size large or extra-large) • White or black tube socks • Personal/travel size body wash, deodorant, and shampoo • Personal/travel size toothbrush and toothpaste • Personal/travel size wet wipes • Packs of 8 oz. Local Christmas tree disposal sites

Holiday greenery adds joy in the darkest, coldest season. When the holidays are over, there are several local options to properly dispose of Christmas trees.

The Minnesota DNR warns households to dispose of their tree properly to prevent the spread of invasive species from outside the state.

Pests of concern include elongate hemlock scale, a small insect established in the eastern U.S. where many decorative Fraser firs are grown.

Feeding damage from this invasive insect can cause the needles of hemlocks, fi rs, and spruces to yellow and prematurely drop. Also, boxwood blight and Oriental bittersweet, sometimes found on wreaths and centerpieces, can endanger native trees and other landscaping. More information on these threats can be found at the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) website at www.mda.state.mn.us/holidaygreenery.

To protect the local environment, the State of Minnesota is asking residents to properly dispose of greenery and trees after the holiday season. The DNR has recommended the following guidelines: • The best option is to use a curbside tree collection or bring to a designated drop-off site.

Check with your waste hauler, city, or county to see what services are offered in your area. • Do not toss trees and greenery into backyard woods or your residential compost pile which could allow hitchhiking pests to escape. • Wreaths and other decorative greens can be disposed in trash cans. • If your city or county does not have an organized pick-up or drop-off, the last resort would be to burn the greens. Always check with local ordinances fi rst and follow them.

Christmas trees can be brought to Ramsey County yard waste collection sites that accept trees and branches, where they will then be mulched. Participating yard waste sites include Arden Hills, Frank and Sims, Midway and White Bear Township. Please remove all decorations, lights, wire, tinsel and tree bags. Flocked trees are not accepted and may be placed in the trash.

All sites are free and open to Ramsey County residents; photo ID required. All sites except Midway can be used by Washington County residents for free.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office reported the following incidents in Shoreview: • A resident in the 1700 block of Terrace Drive reported $6,000 worth of audio equipment and $500 worth of construction tools stolen from his vehicle overnight Dec. 13-14 after he came out in the morning to fi nd his vehicle unlocked and the items missing.

• Employees at the Speedway Store in the 5900 block of Rice Creek Parkway reported two cartons of cigarettes stolen from the counter Dec. 14 as the clerk was occupied ringing up other items. The thief ran out of the store in an unknown direction.

• A Ham Lake woman reported her purse stolen Dec. 16 from a vehicle she accidently left unlocked while she was walking in the Rice Creek Dog Park in the 5900 block of Lexington Avenue N. A credit card was then used fraudulently at the Shoreview Target before it could be canceled.

• A Virginia woman, 36, was arrested Dec. 17 on Rice Street and North Owasso Blvd. for DWI after deputies on patrol observed her failure to maintain her lane in the area of Rice Street at County Drive and conducted a traffic stop. She failed both sobriety tests administered to her.

• A Minneapolis woman, 22, was arrested Dec. 14 at the Shoreview Target in the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue N. for theft after she was caught shoplifting. The theft charge was bumped up from misdemeanor to felony after Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies found proof that she was involved in four incidents of shoplifting at the Shoreview and Roseville Target stores.

• A resident in the 4500 block of Victoria Street on Dec. 17 reported the front passenger window of her vehicle broken and a Gucci bag and its contents of no value stolen.

• A resident in the 1300 block of West Royal Oaks Drive at 7:09 p.m. Dec. 14 reported three packages delivered at 5:28 p.m. that day stolen from the front door area, resulting in a $117.59 loss. A video of the suspect is available.

• A resident in the 5900 block of Carlson Street on Dec. 18 reported his front license plate stolen after he received a letter regarding a gas drive-off in Minneapolis.

• A Wayzata man reported his rental vehicle stolen from a driveway in the 400 block of Bucher Avenue at 4:25 a.m. Dec. 15 while it was left running to warm up with the keys in the ignition.

The vehicle was recovered in Vadnais Heights with both plates missing. One plate was later recovered in Lino Lakes.

• A vehicle belonging to a Stacy woman and a Wayzata man and stolen out of Chisago County was reported found Dec. 15 in the 700 block of Bucher Avenue. Property belonging to the victims was found discarded in the area.

• A resident in the 5400 block of Saint Albans Street N. reported $3,000 to $5,000 worth of tools stolen

• A single license plate was reported recovered Dec. 17 in the 1400 block of Pinewood Drive. The area was checked for possible switched license plates, but none were found.

• A resident in the 3000 block of Kent Street on Dec. 21 reported her driver’s license and debit card missing after they were not returned following her visit to a bank drive-thru. The bank did not know who received the cards, and the debit card has been canceled. The report was needed to replace the license.

• A resident in the 500 block of North Owasso Blvd. reported mail stolen from his residence Dec. 21, resulting in a loss of $16. No suspect information is available.

• A resident in the 4100 block of Lexington Avenue N. reported her vehicle rummaged through overnight Dec. 20-21 while it was parked in the

lot. Although spare change was stolen, the vehicle sustained no damage.

• A Shoreview man, 19, was cited at 5:41 a.m.

Dec. 21 at the intersection of Victoria Street N. and Cottage Place for driving without a license after Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash in the area.

• A Lino Lakes man, 45, was arrested at 4:23 a.m. Dec. 22 in the area of Hodgson Road and County Road J for DUI after deputies responded to a report of a slumper in the 5900 block of Hodgson Road. Deputies found the subject asleep and slumped over the steering wheel at the intersection with the car running. He failed the field sobriety test and registered a 0.09 on the portable breath test.

• A Shoreview man reported being robbed Dec. 22 in the area of Gramsie Road and Victoria Street N. after meeting a man in a church parking lot to purchase an Apple watch via the mobile market app, OfferUp. The suspect grabbed the offered money and threw an empty box into the victim’s car window before fleeing on foot. The case is under investigation.

• A Plymouth man, 37, was arrested at 7:20 p.m.

Dec. 22 in the 3500 block of Owasso Street for violating an order for protection.

• A male wearing a black sweatshirt and pulledup face mask was reported at 9:51 p.m. Dec. 22 for robbing the Freedom Gas Station in the 5900 block of Hodgson Road. He entered the store and displayed a handgun before demanding money from the cash register. He then fled south into a waiting vehicle. The case is under investigation.

• A Coon Rapids woman reported a Coon Rapids man, 30, for violating an order for protection at 7:55 p.m. Dec. 24 in the 5600 block of Dunlap Avenue. The suspect fled before deputies arrived.

The case was sent to the city attorney for review of possible charges.

With busy ice fishing season expected, DNR tips for safe, successful season HEN IS ICE SAFE

With the kickoff of the ice fishing season, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reminds new and veteran anglers alike of their responsibility to keep themselves safe and to be a considerate member of the ice angling community.

Some of Minnesota’s most popular winter fisheries, such as Upper Red Lake, have drawn remarkably high numbers of anglers already this season, while in other places people are patiently waiting for a cold snap to make the ice thick enough to walk on.

“Conservation officers have seen higher-than-usual numbers of people

on the ice where it’s thick enough, and we expect that to continue,” said Rodmen Smith, director of the DNR Enforcement Division. “We just want to make sure everyone has a safe season.”

The recommended minimum thickness for walking on new, clear ice is 4 inches. Wait for 5 to 7 inches before heading out on an ATV or snowmobile, and keep cars off until there’s 8 to 12 inches. Anyone planning to drive out in a truck, should wait until there’s at least 12 to 15 inches of ice. Double these minimums for white or snow-covered ice.

• Wear a life jacket or float coat on the

ice (except when in a vehicle).

• Carry ice picks, rope, an ice chisel and tape measure.

• Check ice thickness at regular intervals; conditions can change quickly.

• Bring a cell phone or personal locator beacon.

• Don’t go out alone; tell someone about trip plans and expected return time.

• Before heading out, inquire about conditions and known hazards with local experts.

If you see someone fall through, remain calm and call 911. Do not attempt a rescue unless there is a means of self-rescue. Throw the person any piece of buoyant gear available, as well as a rope, jumper cables or other object to pull them out of the water or away from thin ice. Let go if they start pulling you toward dangerous ice.

MDH seeking statewide input on how to sequence vaccination phases

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has announced it is seeking Minnesotans’ feedback on how to continue progress toward the goal of distributing the initial supply of COVID-19 vaccine in a way that saves the most lives and puts us on a path to ending the crisis brought on by the pandemic as quickly as possible.

The limited initial supply of COVID-19 vaccine means there is not enough for everyone who needs it. The state must therefore determine a process that ensures fair, equitable, and effective distribution of the vaccine. As Minnesota health officials work with a wide range of partners to distribute the fi rst small shipments of COVID-19 vaccines to health care workers and long-term care residents and staff (in “Phase 1a� of vaccine distribution), they continue planning for the larger

shipments of vaccine expected in the coming weeks and months.

Minnesota is following federal recommendations to start vaccine distribution with the people who are most likely to get COVID-19 and those most at risk of serious complications. Minnesotans can provide feedback about part of this process to the state’s COVID-19 Vaccine Allocation Advisory Group. The advisory group includes health care experts from across the state who review guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) about who should get the vaccine fi rst, and make detailed recommendations for how to apply the guidelines in Minnesota to the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH).

Minnesotans may provide feedback about how to

implement ACIP’s guidelines in Minnesota through the MDH website: Minnesota COVID-19 Vaccine Allocation Advisory Group. Ultimately, Gov. Walz makes the final decisions about COVID-19 vaccine distribution. But those decisions are based on advice from public health experts at MDH and the Vaccine Allocation Advisory Group, whose advice will be informed by public feedback.

The group met Dec. 30, and will meet again on Jan. 11 to discuss distribution of vaccine for frontline essential workers and Minnesotans age 75 and older (in “Phase 1b� of vaccine distribution).

The group will deliver its final recommendations to Gov. Walz. Public feedback submitted via the website by 5 p.m. on Jan. 7, will be provided to the advisory group ahead of their Jan. 11 meeting.

2021 Legislative preview This is the opening week of the ninety-second session of the Minesota Legislature. Members take oaths of office, elect leaders and officers.

the norm, schools had to deal with the lack of resources for students, and this coming biennium will continue to challenge schools. In this upcoming 2021 session, Minnesota will set its two-year budget, which includes funding for E-12 education. We need to prioritize fully funding education to address challenges that our schools are facing such as telecommunications, equity, mental health and nutritional needs.

Despite this, we remain guided by our shared values and priorities. In this 2021 session, I will continue to fight for COVID-19 relief for our workers and families and transformational criminal justice legislation, and fully fund education.

• COVID-19 relief: This year was unprecedented, and families across the state are struggling financially. We have to pass forward-looking legislation to build a better future for all Minnesotans, both during and after this public health emergency. This means passing emergency housing support, hourly school district employee compensation, hazard pay for grocery store workers, and other essential COVID-19 assistance. Despite the challenges and uncertainty ahead of us, we have an opportunity to help our neighbors and communities.

• Criminal justice reform: This past year, we passed a police reform bill that was a small step forward in holding our systems accountable. However, we must continue fighting and working towards a just and fair criminal justice system for all — no exceptions. Every Minnesotan deserves to be and feel safe in their communities, and to ensure that, we need to pass transformational criminal justice legislation.

• Fully fund education: The pandemic brought into stark contrast the varying inequities in Minnesota’s public school systems. As distance learning became

These investments will not only help us overcome COVID-19, but ultimately empower us to thrive once again when we move past the pandemic.

In 2019, I successfully chief-authored a bill to create a working group to comprehensively update Minnesota’s criminal sexual conduct code. It’s a complex area of law with numerous loopholes; as a result, too many offenders have been able to escape accountability. This panel is approaching the end of its work and will soon issue recommendations to the Legislature. I’m working on a package of bills related to those suggestions that will provide greater justice for survivors.

Solutions to address our nation’s

gun violence epidemic remain unresolved, and the crisis hasn’t disappeared. This session, I’ll be the chief author of legislation authorizing Extreme Risk Protective Orders, a.k.a. “red flag” laws. This legislation would help ensure potentially dangerous individuals can’t access firearms temporarily following a court order.

This is an effective tool to prevent gun violence, including suicide by gun, which happens too frequently in Minnesota.

Red Flag laws are broadly supported by Minnesotans — including gun owners — and momentum continues among gun violence survivors, parents, young people and other Minnesotans to deliver overdue safety measures.

I’ll be renewing my efforts to strengthen mental health among Minnesota students. This issue has received more attention during the pandemic, but it was a crisis well before distance learning started.

While I’m glad that my bill to ensure all teachers receive training on student mental health and suicide prevention passed in 2020, much more needs to be done. I plan to once again introduce a bill creating a position at the Minnesota Department of Education devoted to student mental health, and to share best practices across the state and resources for school districts.

ever to invest in our state and our communities.

Minnesotans are counting on us to deliver critical assistance to those who are struggling and to invest in our shared priorities.

I will continue working with community members and my colleagues to build an economy that works for everyone, no matter where they live or what they look like.

As for bills I will be carrying, I hope to secure continued funding for the No Child Left Inside grant program. This initiative provides outdoor environmental, ecological, and natural resource-based programs for Minnesota youth. I carried this bill two years ago and since that time it has served hundreds of children who otherwise would have limited access to outdoor opportunities. No Child Left Inside has been an extremely popular program, and I hope we can build on its early success.

In addition, I will be serving in a new leadership role this year. As the incoming chair of the House Judiciary Finance & Civil

Law Committee, justice, equity and transparency will be my top priorities. I am committed to ensuring that our shared values as Minnesotans are reflected in our legal systems.

It is an honor to serve our community at the Capitol, and I believe we can strengthen our state this year if we work together.

Elizabeth Lawin immediately fell in love with the 19th century building on Washington Avenue. She loved the look and history of the brick building. Breweries ‘adapt or die’ during pandemic

If it wasn’t for government funding, customer support and the innovation of business owners, several more breweries would have closed their doors since the pandemic began.

Breweries are now weathering their second shutdown. The first shutdown began last year on March 17 and lasted 2 1/2 months. From June 10 until the second shutdown, which began Nov. 21, breweries were allowed to operate at 50% capacity indoors and had to adhere to a long list of guidelines.

On Dec. 18 Gov. Walz revised the executive order to prohibit indoor dining but allow breweries to serve patrons outdoors.

The executive order is effective through Sunday, Jan. 10. Restrictions may be dialed back at that time or remain in place.

Press Publications spoke to the owners of HammerHeart Brewing Co. in Lino Lakes, Lakes & Legends Brewing Company in Minneapolis and Big Wood Brewery in White Bear Lake to learn more about how the pandemic has impacted the industry.

HammerHeart Brewing Co. has been around since August 2013. Co-owner Nathaniel Chapman said that from the very beginning of the pandemic, his business chose to be cautious.

“If there was a recommendation to do something, even before it was mandated, we did it,” he explained. “Once the first shutdown happened, that's when we just settled into the new normal.”

Throughout the entire pandemic, Chapman said the guidance the business has received from the state has been “straightforward.”

“We always agreed with the guidance,” he noted.

“At any point, we have never had qualms with it.

“The whole thing has been frustrating, but we agreed with it so we never had issues navigating what we could or couldn’t do, because we always erred on the side of cau-

tion,” he said. “We were never trying to push the boundaries of the gray areas.”

Out of all the different phases, Chapman said operating indoor service at 50% capacity was the toughest. Although a majority of customers were understanding of the protocols in place, it was evident that a select few customers were frustrated with the guidelines.

“As a brewery, our number one goal is to make people feel welcome and comfortable, and by default we weren't able to do that … It took a toll on our staff.”

Chapman said if it wasn’t for government funding — both a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan and a grant from Anoka County — his business would not be open. The funding has allowed the brewery to keep its full-time staff.

He said it is crucial that his business receives a second round of support from the government.

“I absolutely have to get those. If I don't, it really puts me at risk. We are losing over 50% of our profit every week,” he said. “Over the course of the last nine months, that’s a ton of change that we have lost.”

Circle Pines resident Derrick Taylor celebrated his five-year business anniversary last month.

Although he couldn’t stage a special event, the brewery made a special beer that’s available for purchase.

Immediately after the first shutdown, the business saw a dramatic decline in revenue. “Tuesday is usually our best day of the typical work week, and we have made probably 20% of what we typically make on a Tuesday. That was just a sharp decline in revenue, and then it just continued from there,” Taylor recalled.

The business is down over 60% in taproom revenue and down 25% in distribution (to other bars, restaurants, liquor stores).

Taylor said it has been challenging to try to plan for 2021 and beyond.

“It is difficult to try to predict what is going to come up ahead of us,” he explained. “It is tough to plan on what we can and cannot do, not only the fun stuff like marketing and releasing new beers and products, but the financial planning is so difficult … It is really difficult to see the future and make decisions.”

The other side Taylor needs to think about is the people, both his staff and his customers. “I use the term ‘space and grace’ around here quite a bit. I ask my team and customers to remember to give everybody space and grace and to know that we are not firing on all cylinders right now and that’s okay, it is OK to not be OK,” he said. “As Americans, and Minnesotans especially, it is in our DNA to work hard and to figure it out, and so the pandemic is extremely challenging.”

One thing that has helped the brewery weather the pandemic so far is innovation.

The Lakes & Legends business model changed several times in 2020 and will continue to evolve in 2021. It’s had to change staffing and rethink purchases. The business added delivery options and installed a new point of sale system for a more digital experience.

“It is adapt or die. You really don’t have another choice,” Taylor said.

A few key things have helped the taproom stay alive. Lakes & Legends was able to work with its landlord to restructure its lease and defer rent payments; it received PPP funding and was able to restructure its Small Business Association (SBA) loans and also received a grant from Hennepin County.

“Those things give me a lot of positivity and hope that we are going to be able to make through the next six months,” he said.

Big Wood Brewery is doing its best to stay afloat throughout the coronavirus crisis, but restrictions have made for a challenge unlike any other the team has faced

The pandemic has led to a series of unforeseen problems for the beer industry, said Sales Manager Jamey Worley, an aluminum can shortage being among the biggest.

The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically decreased draught beer sales, as breweries cannot sell kegs to restaurants or pints to taproom patrons at the same rates as pre-pandemic.

As lockdowns and social distancing guidelines confine people to their homes, more and more consumers have been purchasing cans of beer to drink at home.

With a finite amount of aluminum to manufacture those cans, the supply chain has proven unable to handle the increased demand, and so the industry is bracing for a shortage. Local craft breweries like Big Wood have been hit the hardest by the can crisis, as they generally have fewer resources and less leverage with metal suppliers.

At the same time, Big Wood is facing a deficit due to an excess of beer that it has not been able to sell.

“Just think about how precious our resources were when we were operating at 50% capacity outside and 25% inside.

Then, we were forecasting to have beer going out into the marketplace,” Worley said. “It took all our resources to buy the

stuff to put it into, and now it's out there rotting …. You think about the waste there and you're like, 'You're kidding me.'

It's not like we have money to spare right now.”

Worley said that Big Wood will continue to comply with state restrictions, though she and the rest of the team worry about their future. So far, the support of loyal customers has helped them weather the storm.

Big Wood offers free delivery to homes within a 10-mile radius of the brewery with a $20 minimum order and $10 delivery to homes outside of that radius with a $30 minimum. Delivery is free for all orders over $50. Growlers can also be purchased online and picked up at the brewery, located at 2222 4th St., White Bear Lake. In general, brewery owners can’t wait to return to the fun part of the industry. They look forward to the days when their taprooms are at 100% capacity and they can once again host special events, offer samples and attend beer festivals.

Rise of the Robin: Why some birds are changing where they spend the winter

The song of the American robin—large, friendly redbreast of suburban lawns and back yards—has long been said to herald the arrival of spring. For scientists who study long-term data, collected by community volunteers, the presence of the robin can signal much more, especially when it appears here in the winter.

Volunteers for the 2020 Audubon Christmas Bird Count observed 303 American robins during their survey in the Northeast Suburban area on Dec. 26. This area includes the communities of White Bear Lake, Dellwood, Hugo, Mahtomedi, Withrow, Stillwater, and Marine on St. Croix. The volunteers adjusted well to the restrictions of Covid-19; staying socially distanced and never sharing a vehicle with others outside their household or immediate social pod. Despite the new rules, 42 route-patrollers and 18 feeder-watchers were able to participate in the count this year.

The international Christmas Bird Count tradition is more than 100 years old. It was established as a less deadly alternative to Christmas bird hunts: once a staple of family Christmas gatherings.

Over the decades it has evolved into one of the longest and most consistent collections of bird observation data, providing insight into the trends and behaviors among populations, which in turn provide clues about the state of the environment around us. The bird count is an entertaining way to spend a winter afternoon, somewhat like a neighborhood scavenger hunt. But the CBC is also a numbers game. Over his years of involvement in the count, Northeast Suburban count coordinator Jim Howitz has become well versed in the trends and statistics that prompt scientific questions about which populations are changing, and why.

One thing has been clear from the decades of amassed data: birds such as the American robin are changing where they spend their winters.

“When I was a kid, you never saw robins in winter,” said Howitz. “Their species name is

‘migratorius,’ so they’ve been migratory since the time of Linnaeus, but they stick around now.

They use ornamental trees around yards, and during breeding season nest by your house and eat worms.”

This changing behavior is part of a much larger trend: robins are one among dozens of species that are pushing their winter range northward. Climate change is likely a large factor, Howitz said—as winters become milder, more birds are able to stay in place without expending energy on a long migration south. Waterfowl may even do so to avoid hunting seasons in the warmer areas of the U.S. CBC volunteers also tallied a number of other species that aren’t usually found here in the winter months. Some sparrows, such as dark-eyed juncos, are known to stay through the winter, but on Dec. 26, counters observed song, chipping, and whitethroated sparrows. Volunteers also found Wilson’s snipe, brown thrashers, and a varied thrush—a robin relative normally found in the Western U.S. Howitz said he expects it will be able to survive the winter, with the aid of ornamental fruit trees in the neighborhood.

While this diversity of species is exciting for volunteers to fi nd, it is just as important to pay attention to what the counters don’t see. Over the long term, the CBC has recorded declining numbers of northern birds, which used to be seen in the Northeast Suburban area in abundance.

“We set the record for redpolls in 1977,” Howitz said. “We had more redpolls than anyplace else in North America, with 4,015 individuals. They come in these enormous flocks, and for a moment they can blot out the sky. Some years it’s just a handful, and this looks like a handful year. They may explode later in the year, sometimes you don’t see them at all and then in February and then you’re deluged with them. Winter is young.”

Some birders expected a winter irruption of northern finches this year, but the count volunteers saw no evening or pine grosbeaks as they hoped.

The last pine grosbeak seen on the Northeast Suburban bird count was in 1989.

able to count on, and they’re not here,” Howitz said.

“We’re picking up new birds like robins, wrens, titmice, and losing birds that aren’t coming this far south, like redpolls.”

Birds from the southern reaches of the state, such as wild turkeys and red-bellied woodpeckers, are traveling further north than they ever have before.

This year, the CBC included a Carolina wren and two tufted titmice—species Howitz said we can expect to see more of as the climate continues to warm.

“Practically everybody was happy with what we found; most people were finding one or two things they don’t normally find,” Howitz said.

A smartphone app developed by four Gen Z-ers is finding new resonance amid the current COVID-19 pandemic. Pikup, its founders say, has a simple mission: to unite communities by connecting people needing something with those already out and about. Say that you’re making a Target run after work. You can use Pikup to notify a group of contacts — family, friends, neighbors, or others — of your plans and ask if they need anything. The app allows those contacts to request items and pay you back, and also gives you a small reward for your act of service. Pikup is the brainchild of four 20-somethings, including Sam Lerdahl, a Shoreview native and 2017 graduate of Mounds View High School. Lerdahl is Pikup’s chief technology officer. He and his teammates launched the app, originally called Runerra, while they were students at the University of Minnesota. Their hope was to streamline the process of running errands for others and to add a human touch to the delivery process.

Minnesota 1st state to ban TCE

Minnesota became the fi rst state to ban trichloroethylene (TCE), a toxic chemical that can increase risk for certain types of cancer and other serious health issues.

The Minnesota House of Representatives approved a bill May 13 prohibiting use of TCE, following the Senate’s bipartisan lead three weeks ago. Authored by Rep. Ami Wazlawik (DFL – White Bear Township), the bill will protect Minnesotans from the carcinogen, which for years was spewed into the air surrounding the Water Gremlin plant in White Bear Township.

Though she had to stay several feet away from most of her guests, Shoreview resident Marian Wocken rang in her 100th birthday July 10 with a party for friends and family.

She contributes the longevity of her life to her community involvement and her close-knit family.

“I never planned on it,” she said of turning 100. “I just got busy, and it happened.” Her secret? “Good genes, good health, good family.

Stay active. Plenty of prayer.” She also offered the following word to the wise: “The fi rst 100 years are the hardest.”

Student launches organization to aid restaurant, hospital workers SUBMITTED

why one local high school student has launched an initiative for residents to simultaneously help out people working in both fields.

Sruthi Subramanian is a senior at Mounds View High School. She is also the founder of the Twin Cities branch of the Meal Bridge, which was started in Atlanta. It has since grown to include branches in four other metro areas, including Minneapolis-St. Paul, throughout the country. Meal Bridge serves as a bridge between restaurants and hospitals, Subramanian said. Ready to roll: City skate park opens to public

Shoreview's new skate park opened this summer. The 7,500 square foot plaza features a blend of terrains, as well as stairs, handrails and benches.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the new Shoreview Skatepark Plaza debuted with little fanfare, but is nevertheless open to the public and has already been drawing a crowd.

The old wooden skating ramps at the Shoreview Commons have been replaced with a new concrete skatepark. The 7,500 square foot plaza flows with the natural topography of the space, featuring a blend of terrains, as well as stairs, handrails and benches.

Back to school

SEP PTEMBER

The 2020-21 school year began the same way the 2019-20 one ended: with students attending class from home. As local COVID-19 case counts have flucuated, schools have alternated from full-time to part-time distance learning. However, beginning Jan. 18, all elementary schools in the state can open for in-person instruction provided they follow a newly expanded list of restrictions, which include requiring staff to wear both a mask and a face shield, and making COVID-19 testing available every other week.

Middle and high school students will remain in distance learning for the time being.

Deluxe Corporation leaving Shoreview

After more than 30 years in Shoreview, Deluxe Corporation is leaving the city.

The Fortune 1000 company announced plans to relocate its headquarters to downtown Minneapolis in fall 2021 after construction of its new facility is complete.

President and CEO Barry McCarthy said that the move follows the company’s growth from check printing to a wider array of small business financial services.

Chris Mielke took advantage of the first big snowstorm of the year to check an item off his bucket list: paddle board across Snail Lake while it snowed.

Shoreview’s longest-tenured employee is now entering his golden years.

Buildings and Grounds Superintendent Gary Chapman retired last month after more than four decades with the city.

Chapman was fi rst hired as a seasonal employee in 1975, then as a full-time parks maintenance worker in 1979 before being promoted to lead worker in the parks department in 1988. In 2000, he became the buildings and grounds superintendent and managed hundreds of projects, including major ones like the recent expansion of the Shoreview Community Center and renovation of the Shoreview Commons.

With almost 42 years of service to Shoreview, Chapman is the longesttenured staff member in Shoreview’s history. He officially retired on Oct. 30 and was honored with an official proclamation at the Nov. 2 Shoreview City Council meeting.

NOVEMBER

Shoreview’s city council incumbents prevailed in their bids for reelection in November.

Sue Denkinger and Emy Johnson won the two open seats on the Shoreview City Council, securing their reelection bids against three other challengers. Both will serve four-year terms that expire Dec. 31, 2024. Denkinger received 28.2% of the total votes, followed by Johnson with 24.7%.

Incumbent Sandy Martin ran unopposed for mayor.

Shoreview City Council honors Citizen of the Year

Shoreview’s Citizen of the Year is traditionally recognized at the city’s annual Volunteer Appreciation Event, but the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic meant the 2020 celebration was canceled.

This year’s honoree, Helen Nelson, may have been recognized with less of the usual fanfare, though with no less gratitude, according to Mayor Sandy Martin.

Nelson, whom Martin called a “great friend and longtime booster of this community,” was formally recognized as the 2020 Citizen of the Year during the Nov. 16 City Council meeting.

1st COVID-19 vaccines arrive in Minnesota

The fi rst shipments of COVID-19 vaccines arrived in Minnesota last week, and more are on the way, offering a glimmer of hope that the end of the pandemic may well be in sight. Frontline health care workers and residents of long-term care facilities will be the first to receive the vaccine. The vaccines come from two manufacturers, Pfi zer and Moderna, which have both sought emergency use authorization from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The agency gave the green light to the Pfi zer vaccine late Friday, Dec. 11, and to the Moderna vaccine on Friday, Dec. 18.

With COVID-19 numbers increasing, many churches held livestreamed Christmas Eve services on Zoom or Facebook Live.

2020 has been a year of challenges. It has also been a year with its share of faith and grace amidst the pandemic, when many have needed them most.

This year’s Christmas season looked very different from past Christmases. Nevertheless, as Minnesota’s COVID numbers increase and restrictions are placed on indoor gatherings, area churches are learning how to adapt. In doing so, congregations have found inspiration in the season and within their church communities. With in-person gatherings posing a public health risk, Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church has moved its services to the parking lot since. Come Christmas Eve, the congregation members did the same.

“If Jesus was born in a barn, it only seems right that we celebrate his birth in a parking lot,” Pastor Renee Peterson’s reasoning went.

Our recent snow activity at the end of last year has brought our seasonal snow total to 30.5". I've totaled slightly less, 24", in my back yard. With temperatures on the mild side, people of all ages have been taking advantage of the snow and great ice conditions for skating. With our upper air ďŹ&#x201A;ow split (with a jet to the north and to our south), our ďŹ&#x201A;ow overhead is somewhat stagnant. Consequently we've been experiencing foggy mornings. With light winds the fog is slow to clear and lift, but when it does the sun sure feels good.

Turner mainstay on O-line for high-flying Packers

Billy Turner, a National Football League player for seven years, is enjoying his best pro season as a versatile lineman for one of the top teams, the Green Bay Packers.

The 2010 graduate of Mounds View High School is the starting right tackle while also fi lling in at left tackle for the Packers, whose 12-3 record and 474 points are tops in the National Conference. He was their starting right guard last season.

Turner, who previously played for the Miami Dolphins and Denver Broncos, joined the Packers in 2019, signing for $28 million over four seasons.

Until this season, the 6-foot-5, 310-pound athlete mainly played guard. With the Packers, Turner has blocked much better at the tackle positions than he did at guard, and is regarded as a strong spot on the line, according to analysts covering the Packers.

Blocking for Aaron Rodgers has been a career highlight for the former North Dakota State star.

"He's (Rogers) one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time so, of course, you don't ever want to let him get a hit,” Turner told Packers.com, after helping the Packers beat New Orleans 37-30 in the third week of the season.

Turner, 29, had won the right tackle job in pre-season, but a knee injury late in training camp relegated him to backup duties the fi rst two games. Against the Saints, in his fi rst start, he got good reviews for keeping Saints All-Pro defensive end Cameron Jordan away from Rodgers.

Last season, he started all 18 games at right guard, and led the offensive line with 1,078 snaps.

But according to Sports Info Solutions, he had 35 blown blocks, fi fth most in the league at his position, so he had to win a job this season.

Head coach Matt LaFleur and offensive line coach Adam Stenavich decided to give Turner some time at right tackle this training camp, looking to replace longtime starter Bryan Bulaga, and liked what they saw from Turner at tackle.

Turner played left tackle, a critical position for protecting right-handed quarterbacks on their blind side, for three games after David Bakhtiari was injured, and held his own. He moved back to right tackle at halftime against San Francisco when Ricky Wagner was injured.

"Being an offensive lineman in the NFL you have to know that you're not always going to just play that one specific position," Turner told Packers.com. He praised Packer coaches for preparing linemen for multiple positions so

starter at offensive and defensive tackle and helped the Mustangs go 26-8 and reach the state semifi nals his last two years.

“Billy was an incredible player,” said Jim Galvin, activities director now, football coach then. “He was big, 6-4, 270, and could run really well, and had great feet. He was a devastating blocker at the line of scrimmage and we could pull him around the perimeter, too.”

Turner was also the baseball captain as a pitcher and fi rst baseman. He played basketball until 10th grade when he gave up his winter sport due to stress on his knees.

“He does an incredible job in the community, too,” said Galvin, noting that Turner does a lot to help kids and was a vocal leader after the George Floyd death last summer. “He was on national TV shows, talking about racial justice.”

Turner lives in St. Paul and keeps in touch with his alma mater, attending at least one game a year and sometimes talking to the team, Galvin said.

His father, Maurice, had a four-year NFL career as a running back with Minnesota (198485), Green Bay (1985) and the New York Jets (1987). Maurice was an assistant coach with the Mustangs when his sons played. Billy’s younger brother Maurice Jr. was an all-state wide receiver and played for Northern Iowa.

Turner had a stellar career at North Dakota State, helping the Bison won three national championships. He was a consensus FCS AllAmerican as a junior and senior and was impressive in the 2014 Senior Bowl, an all-star game with mostly Division I players.

The Miami Dolphins drafted him in the third round in 2014 as the 67th pick, then the highest selection for an NDSU player since 2002.

Turner had a tough time for a while. With the Dolphins, in 2016, he had to switch from right guard to left tackle on short notice when the starter was hurt, and gave up three sacks against Tennessee. He got released, was claimed by Baltimore on waivers, and released by the Ravens after three days. Five days later, the Denver Broncos claimed him off waivers. He stuck there but during the 2017 season, he suffered a broken hand in week six and went on injured reserve.

Turner had a good 2018 season with the Broncos, starting 11 games in place of injured starters, at right tackle four games and left guard seven games, which led to getting his careerturning deal with the Packers.
