the most memorable stories are the ones that feature local residents — for example, when Mayor Sandy Martin announced her retirement; when Council Member Terry Quigley passed away in January; or when Veteran John Abbott shared his story about the Vietnam War.

Before we say goodbye to 2022 and hello to 2023, it is a tradition of the Shoreview Press to look back at some of the most memorable stories of the year. In 2022, pages were filled with a variety of news, including stories about crimes, events, schools, churches, sports, businesses, city government and more. The Lakeshore Quilters Guild is calling all quilters and members of the community to attend its 14th anniversary party on Tuesday, July 26. The first meeting of the Lakeshore Quilters Guild was held in July 2008. Gail Carlson, of Shoreview, was interested in joining a guild and contacted the White Bear Lake Guild, whose leaders encouraged her to start one in Shoreview. She put a small ad in the Shoreview Press and 23 people attended the first meeting. Attendance almost doubled the next month. After just a few months of meeting at the Shoreview Library, the group needed more space and moved to Shepherd of the Hills Church in Shoreview. The group still meets there on the fourth Tuesday of each month. Currently, there are 75+ members. “Early in our existence, I heard a member remark that she’d never experienced a group come together so strong, so fast,” said original guild member Sharon Fiebiger of Shoreview. “We were brought together by a hobby, but I think the interpersonal support and encouragement we share keeps the guild both rooted and growing.” Board member Barbara Kuhlman of Lino Lakes went to the first organizational meeting and enjoys being part of a group of talented and amazing women.

“This is not just a building, it’s an art building,” Kathie Cafesjian Baradaran said. The Cafesjian Art Trust (CAT) is opening a new art museum this fall at 4600 Churchill St. in Shoreview. Scholars, art lovers, students and the general public will be able to study and enjoy the private collection of art lover and philanthropist Gerard Cafesjian.

Joey Tan, who will graduate from Mounds View High School this year, has been named one of 5,000 candidates in the 2022 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. She was selected from about 3.6 million students who are expected to graduate in 2022 from all the high schools in the country. If she is chosen, Tan will be one of only 161 U.S. Presidential Scholars awarded this prestigious award. “I was surprised when I received the email message, knowing there are so many other candidates just as good in my school and the country. But honestly, I was very happy but mostly just grateful for the opportunity to apply for the program,” Tan said. The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, which was established in 1964 by the executive order of the president, recognizes some of the nation’s most outstanding graduating seniors for their accomplishments in many areas: academic success, leadership and service to school and community, including accomplishments in visual, creative, performing arts and technical fields. It is not surprising that Tan was selected in this first cut for the award. Always a high achiever, she not only enrolled and excelled in all of her advanced placement (AP) classes at Mounds View High School (MVHS) and secured high scores in standardized tests, but she is also carrying a full load of classes as a post-secondary enrollment options (PSEO) student at the

Cobbling may be a dying profession, but the tradition is alive and strong at George’s Shoe & Repair in Arden Hills. Luke George, a fourthgeneration cobbler, is one of the best in the business. He recently won the Gold Award in the Silver Cup Contest from the Shoe Service Institute of America (SSIA). “I was blown away, since it was my first try. I got gold, and that was awesome,” George said. “Since there were four awards

this year, I honestly expected to place lower because I knew people in the competition.” For the competition, George bought two beat-up pairs of shoes that were worn in and started refurbishing them. “I had to make them look brand new—like they just came off the shelf. It’s a lot of detail and a lot of time,” he said. “They judge detail, balance, the trim and finish of the edge, the stitch lines, and other small details.” Since the late 1930s, the Silver Cup Contest has recognized excellence in shoe repair

craftsmanship. SSIA’s founders recognized that quality craftsmanship is at the core of success in the shoe repair industry and created this contest as a means to recognize it and promote it. George’s Shoe & Repair has a long history spanning more than 110 years. Luke’s greatgrandfather, Joe George, founded the shop in Lebanon in 1905. When he retired, he passed the business along to his son, Said, who ran it for nearly 40 years and moved operations from SEE 4TH-GENERATION COBBLER, PAGE 5

“Glass tiles are going on the outside of the building, which is really going to transform the look of the building,” the North Oaks resident said. “I want people to know immediately that they are not in Kansas anymore when they walk through the building.” The renovation plan, designed by Mohagan Hansen, creates a 20,000-square-foot space for the new museum.

Among the approximately 3,000 pieces constituting the permanent collection of the new museum is studio glass by Dale Chihuly, Toots Zynsky, Stanislav Libensky and Jaroslava Brychtová, and modern and contemporary artwork by Arshile Gorky, Victor Vasarely, Georges Braque and many other world-renowned artists. CAT trustee Cafesjian Baradaran, Gerard’s daughter, said the building is being renovated on both the inside and the outside.

Former council member receives Citizen of the Year award Bob Weyandt, age 81, has been giving back to Shoreview for almost 50 years. He is the recipient of the 2022 Shoreview Citizen of the Year award. “I don’t think I’ve done anything that impressive,” Weyandt said. “I’ve just been here all of these years and at times I got some beautiful opportunities.” Elected to the City Council in 1973, on which he served until 1989, Weyandt was involved with many significant decisions and initiatives. These included the purchase of the land that became Shoreview

Commons and shepherding major housing and population growth. Weyandt said his proudest moment on the City Council was when he helped spearhead a group home in Shoreview called Residents Inc. “Right after I joined the City Council, we passed a law for the construction of a facility for severely developmentally disabled people in a residential neighborhood,” he said. “That caused a lot of attention.” Besides serving on the City Council, Weyandt has also volunteered several different organizations, including: • Shoreview Jaycees: Regional vice president and director of SEE CITIZEN OF THE YEAR, PAGE 5
