The Sights and Sounds of Summer
Cover photo Courtesy of Craig Blacklock “Canoe ready to launch from 50th Avenue Landing”
Living in this part of the world, something we can all probably agree on is that summer is fleeting. Getting the most out of summer can cover a wide spectrum of experiences, ranging from simply enjoying a morning cup of coffee and the view from an outdoor deck to planning an elaborate trip into the wilderness, with a multitude of other activities in between. With this issue of Savour magazine, we’ll try to take some of the pressure off and provide some inspiration and ideas to help extract the maximum amount of enjoyment out of the coming months. Among the images and stories contained in this issue, a collection of favorite summertime foods and beverages have breakfast, lunch and dinner covered at a variety of local establishments, while the stunning photos and engaging cover story about Craig Blacklock’s St. Croix River project — coinciding with the 50th Anniversary of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act — offer an immersive glimpse of the natural beauty on display in this region that might just inspire you to go out and explore it firsthand. However you choose to enjoy the summer, we hope that a perusal through the pages of this magazine is an informative and enjoyable part of that experience.

Photography project captures the splendor of the St. Croix River by Jackie Bussjaeger
T
he soft colors of dawn cast a pink blush over the fog on a summer morning on the wild St. Croix River. It’s a scene that hundreds of locals and visitors alike have fallen in love with over generations of visits. Looking out over the river, it’s difficult to imagine the disruption of logging and industry that dominated the

area in the 19th century. Today, the St. Croix is one of Minnesota’s most beloved destinations and prized resources. After months getting to know this river in every weather phenomenon, shade of the light and season, Minnesota nature photographer Craig Blacklock has released his book “St. Croix and Namekagon
Rivers: The Enduring Gift.” The book celebrates the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Wild & Scenic Rivers Act, which has preserved the diverse ecosystem and clean water of the St. Croix and its tributary, the Namekagon, since 1968. At that time, Minnesota Senator Walter Mondale and Wisconsin Senator Gaylord
“The wealth of the nation is its air, water, soil, forests, minerals, rivers, lakes, oceans, scenic beauty, wildlife habitats and biodiversity... that’s all there is. That’s the whole economy. That’s where all the economic activity and jobs come from.
These biological
systems are the sustaining wealth of the world.”
— Gaylord Nelson, Wisconsin Senator
“Sunrise, St. Croix River below Raspberry Landing.” All photos courtesy of Craig Blacklock. Nelson were the driving forces behind a bill that would protect the wilderness of the St. Croix River and other wild rivers across the nation. Mondale wrote the introduction to Blacklock’s book, reflecting on the fight to bring the river under national protection. Nelson passed away in 2005. Blacklock said part of the intent of the book was in honor of the senator, known widely as the founder of Earth Day. “I’m thrilled we were able to do this and honor him, not only in this but in so many environmental battles,” Blacklock said. “I just wish Gaylord was still around for this part of it.” Blacklock was recovering from a severe burn injury in 2014 when a friend suggested he take on the St. Croix River as his next subject. His injuries made him more sensitive to cold temperatures, so the warmer waters of the river seemed like a more comfortable alternative to the icy waves of his normal subject, Lake Superior.
Although his home in Moose Lake was within the St. Croix watershed, he was hesitant. “I didn’t know if there was going to be enough there to do it,” he said. “I pictured a lot of it being silver maple floodplain; I thought it would be mile after mile of that and not much else.” An exploratory three-day paddle journey down the river in 2015 changed his mind. “I was amazed at the diversity,” he said. “I hadn’t known if there was enough variety there, but the first trip confirmed there was not only enough, but I’d have trouble trying to capture it all. I was amazed at the wilderness character the river has retained; largely due to the Wild & Scenic Rivers Act.” When he learned that the St. Croix River Association was organizing a year of celebrations for the 50-year anniversary of this legislation, Blacklock was convinced he needed to complete the project. The effects of the protective act were easily visible; the river feels almost as
pure as it was thousands of years ago. Although the St. Croix is a popular weekend destination, Blacklock learned that if he went out on Sunday and came back on a Friday, even in heavily visited areas, he’d hardly ever see another person. The lack of disturbances has allowed the native habitat and wildlife of the river to thrive. “So many of the species have come back that were missing not terribly long ago,” Blacklock said. The St. Croix is home to several species of rare mussels, such as the winged mapleleaf, that are now making a population comeback due to conservation efforts on the river. The style of photography Blacklock brought to this project was a little different than the books he has created in the past. “The Lake Superior images are more austere,” he said. “I took this project on with more of the importance of some-

“Northern leopard frog, St. Croix River.” thing that’s going to draw attention to the need to save this ecosystem, so I put my own style on the back burner and really paid attention to showing people what it’s like to be out there; to have the same experiences I was having.” The result is a collection of hundreds of photos showcasing the fine details,

landscapes and aerial views of the river in all seasons, light conditions and forms of weather. “It took on more the feeling of a video for me, with a cinematic approach,” he said. “There are broad landscapes that give you context, but there are also a lot of details such as wildlife, flowers and
ferns that make this area unique. A lot of my work is early morning, with fog coming off the rivers. I love the mysterious nature of that, and getting up an hour before sunrise and watching dawn happen is the greatest show on earth.” Blacklock achieved the aerial photography shots with the help of friend Jon Smithers. During the course of the project, Blacklock explored the riverscape digitally via Google Earth, and admired the aesthetics created by the river’s natural course. “When paddling, the river ahead might disappear around a point, or you might not be able to see over an island. In William O’Brien [State Park], there are all these fingers of channels and islands, but looking down you see this intricate web of waterways,” he said.
Blacklock and his wife Honey did most of the editing and production work on the final images. He got the idea to use pages with different textures from an Ansel Adams photography book. These textured pages include essays, poems and thoughts from nature writers, key legislators, area residents and youth who wanted to share the effect the river has had on them. “I wanted to use the words to give a diversity of voices, but a really authentic voice to the project,” Blacklock said. “Some of these people know the river going back generations.” The months of work culminated in three editions of “The Enduring Gift,” ranging in size and price. Copies of the $4,000 Signature Edition span three feet when open,
“Bloodroot.”
“Moon setting over St. Croix River below Lower Tamarack Landing.” and sport front-page signatures from Blacklock and Mondale. The $1,500 Museum Edition is identical to the Signature Edition, but does not include the cover signatures. The $90 Collector’s Edition is smaller than the others, and includes Blacklock’s signature on the inside. The Signature and Museum Editions both come with original photo prints. The St. Croix River Association will receive a portion of the proceeds from the sales of all editions, which amounts to a maximum of $1,000 for the Signature Edition. Copies of “The Enduring Gift” are not available in many stores, so most copies are sold only on the website at stcroixphotography.com or at presentations. Those who purchase the book will also have access to a video of the photos accompanied by the music of Peter Mayer, a well-known Stillwater songwriter. The biggest message Blacklock wanted viewers to take away from this book is that protecting beautiful natural wonders such as the St. Croix is a magnificent first step—but more work still needs to be done. “You can’t just put a wall around something and check it off as being protected,” Blacklock said. “There are now threats that come from outside an area. There are external threats, so we have to think about every decision we make. If all 7.6 billion people made the same decision you’re about to make, how would that affect the earth 100 years from now?”

Lens Flare Stillwater by Julie Kink
What if there was a way to travel back in time and experience Stillwater landmarks as they existed 100 years ago, while standing in front of those very spots, today? Lens Flare Stillwater has found a way to do just that. Originally launched in 2016 with a $10,000 “Great Idea” grant from the Stillwater Foundation, the project uses technology that allows users to “visit” 19 historic locations for a virtual tour of the city in times past. Millennials call it “geolocation storytelling.” Originator Bob Molenda of Grant calls it a fascinating new way to tell a story. And it’s free. “We’re actually driving people to a location and having them touch and feel and
12 SAVOUR
experience what it was like 100 years ago - that’s kind of rare among history circles, so we’re having a lot of fun,” Molenda said. Through its web site portal or its app — the iPhone app is available now, the Android app is coming soon — a user can stand on Main Street and experience life at the Territorial Prison in the 1890s. Imagine the fastest ride ever down Myrtle Street hill in the 1960s. Learn about Northwest Thresher Company, which occupied 3/4 of a mile along Main Street in the late 1800s. The company employed horse thieves, forgers and murderers, including the famous Bob and Cole Younger - prison labor - and civilian workers to make giant steam engines and implements used throughout the U.S.
Visit lensflarestillwater.org
Molenda’s group has geolocated historic sites and put a “fence” around them so that every time a mobile device nears the site, the display changes to a historic photo that was taken at that spot. Using what’s called augmented reality, he said, the photo and accompanying audio “tells you more about the site than you would normally know if you just walked the street.” Molenda teamed up with Bob Bilyk, whose company LodeStar Learning develops tools and templates for educators, to adapt the technology for teachers interested in getting students out of the classroom to explore the world through the lens of history or geography. Bilyk is one of a handful of volunteers Molenda calls his heroes - “terrific people who believe in what they’re doing.” Still working off its initial
grant, Lens Flare Stillwater is setting up a not-for-profit franchise so it can license its software, allowing other cities and entities to set up similar programs, with a view toward donating proceeds back to the community. At the heart of the project, Molenda said, are thousands of photographs taken in the 1800s and 1900s by John Runk, who spent his lifetime documenting the people and places of the Stillwater area through his camera lens. “He set an example,” Molenda said. “Don’t just have ideas — you’ve got to do something with them. I think that’s where the fun starts.” Visit www.lensflarestillwater.org for more information and apps for mobile devices.

On the Waterfront: Options for First-Time Home Buyers by Thien Nguyen August Homebuyers are currently facing one of the most competitive markets in history. In many cases in the Twin Cities and surrounding areas, as soon as a home is listed for sale, multiple offers are received. It can be a challenge for first-time buyers to know what to do in this type of situation. The best thing they can do is to get a real estate agent on their side. Daniel Churchill, real estate professional with Keller Williams Premier Realty can help guide you through the process and ensure that you get the home that suits your needs at the best price. He takes the time to prepare each of his clients and gives them the knowledge and tools to navigate this challenging market.
If waterfront or cabin living is for you, Dan has the background and experience to successfully guide you through the real estate process. The team at Keller Williams Premier Realty North Suburban lists and sells approximately twice the amount of properties than the other major real estate companies in the area. Whether you’re looking to sell or purchase your first home, contact Dan first for all your real estate needs.
Here are some of Dan’s tips for first-time home buyers: - Choose a realtor that is right for you. The right realtor will have your best interest in mind and will make the process smoother. - Have your finances ready and in order. This will allow you to act quickly when you find the right home. - Be flexible. Everyone wants the perfect house but be open to new ideas. - When placing an offer, less is more in terms of contingencies. - Present a personal letter to the seller. Let them know why you love the home or neighborhood. Starter homes are a great way to gain entry into real estate. Working your way up to a larger home after 5-10 years has traditionally been an option for many buyers but with low home inventory, this is becoming more difficult to do. It is possible to completely skip this step and opt for a long-term purchase, or even your dream home. First-time buyers are being priced out of the starter home market. Once affordable, smaller homes in urban areas are being snatched up by developers and even empty-nesters looking to down-size. Many first-time buyers are waiting longer to buy, saving up more, and skipping the starter home. Opting for your waterfront or woods dream home could be the answer. Dan has over 20 years of experience assisting clients with purchasing and selling waterfront and woods property, and he is a long-time waterfront property owner himself. Dan has the knowledge and understanding that gives his clients the advantage.

Golf for All Ages and Stages – Special SUMMER Programs
or Betsy Larey, golf should be what you want it to be. A competitive sport. Or recreation. Something to do with friends. OR all of those, and it should be enjoyable at all stages in your life. And it should be about fun! What’s important to Betsy, an LPGA teaching professional, is that more people get involved in golf, because it’s an activity they can stay with throughout life. She particularly focuses on helping women of all ages – from girls in middle school to women who see golf as essential for business to women who have retired or whose kids are grown, and decide to give golf a try. “I started playing when I was a kid, because my dad played. I ended up playing with the boys because girls weren’t encouraged.” She played throughout grade and high school at a local club in her hometown, including regional and state club tournaments. “There weren’t women’s teams in high school or college, it was very pre-Title IX, but my parents made sure I had the same opportunities as my brother.” Golf has been a major part of her life since then – throughout her career as the owner of River Valley Athletic Club in Stillwater and a sister club in Eau Claire Wis., and after “retiring,” she has put her energy into teaching and coaching. In addition to private and small group lessons for women and men, she coached women’s golf teams at Carlton College and at Flagler College in Florida.
She was the head coach of the White Bear Lake High School girls team from 20132017. The team had been near the bottom of the conference for many years, but last year for first time in school history, they won the Section tournament and went to the state championships! When Betsy noticed that White Bear Middle School had a program for boys but not girls, she asked the AD about starting a program, he said yes. Betsy’s friend Dori Martinez coaches, and Betsy volunteered to do swing coaching this year. The program has grown from six to 26 participants in three years (top picture). She is still doing private lessons for adults at Keller Golf Course in St. Paul, and leading the Keller Girls Golf Academy for girls in grades 6 through 12. And she writes a column for the White Bear Press, where readers tell her they like her practical approach. “I don’t think we ought to make golf some difficult thing, or else people will give up. I just say ‘try this’ or ‘here’s a tip.’” “I think that women who are teachers, coaches or just good golfers ought to volunteer to help girls who want to play – it is incredibly rewarding and it is also FUN!”
Keller Girls Golf Academy – an all-inclusive summer program designed for girls in 6th - 12th grades who play or want to learn how to play and enjoy competitive golf. Features private one-onone instruction, small group instruction and weekly rounds on the course with lead instructors. Instruction includes fullswing, short game, putting, on-course strategy and mental game strategies. The Girls Golf Academy has tech resources that are frequently used on professional golf tours all over the world, and allows students to access their recorded lessons at anytime. On-Course Play is on Tuesday mornings; multiple choices of times for group instruction. Golf for Grown-Ups – personal instruction customized for women and men, specific to your skills, experience and the way you like to play. Instruction is built around what you want to achieve – from beginners who want to learn how the game is played, to lifetime golfers who want to polish their swing or fix a problem they are having. Women’s Golf Getaway – a three-day weekend for women at all levels of golf experience, at Grandview Lodge in Brainerd. Lots of play and instruction daily. utting edge technology, indoor space and all-season may not be synonymous with winter sports. Until now, Minnesotans had to wait until the colder months to hit the slopes, but what if you could ski and snowboard all year round? At The Alpine Factory in Arden Hills, you can, and it’s an experience you won’t want to miss. The first of its kind in Minnesota, The Alpine Factory is a unique ski and snowboard training center. The indoor facility offers two state-of-the-art infinite slopes. These are revolving surfaces, much like a giant treadmill, where pitch and speed can be adjusted according to your ability level. Each slope can fit up to 3 people comfortably and safely. Skiers and snowboarders wait all year for the snow to fall to begin training and enjoying the sport. Now, instead of waiting and spending the first few runs conditioning, you can train during the off months and start the season off in style. The Alpine Factory lets you stay in shape and improve your skills all in a climate-controlled environment. And there’s no waiting in lift lines. Whether you’re a novice skier/boarder or you’re preparing for a big mountain trip with friends, The Alpine Factory will get you ready. Certified instructors can help you learn the basics in a shorter period of time and improve your technique during a one-hour lesson. Work with an instructor 1:1 or go for a group lesson with up to 3 people. Either way, it’s a cost-efficient way to learn, train and have fun.

Hey Bra Lady – Amy Holland
Certified Bra Fitter and Lead Stylist with Essential Bodywear
M
ost women have a disconnect understanding the importance of proper–fitting undergarments in relation to their health and appearance. In addition, shopping for undergarments is a dreaded task for most women. The majority of retailers do not stock enough sizes, nor do they have enough staff to help you. Even with assistance, a woman may not get into the correct size because her size is not in store. I have been a bra fitter, trainer and sales representative in the intimate apparel industry for the majority of my career. As a certified bra fitter I have more than two decades of experience with helping women achieve a proper fit. I am passionate about educating women on the importance of a proper–fitting bra in relationship to their breast health, back health and self-esteem. I offer women the opportunity to shop for undergarments through private fitting appointments, in-home boutiques, office parties and women’s events, and I make the experience simple, easy and fun! Private appointments are offered at my bra studio, located in St. Paul. With a group of four or more ladies, I am a mobile bra and bodywear store that travels to home or office doors. How’s that for service! I’m equipped with a fit-kit containing 53 sizes of bras (32A-44H), plus panty and shapewear sizes from S-XXXL. Clients try on my samples, and an order is placed for fresh products which are delivered to the client’s door in just a few days. With so many sizes, it’s easy to help women find their perfect size. I tell my clients, “bra fitting isn’t about measuring; it’s an interactive process, and feedback is important.” The look on a woman’s face
when she sees the difference a properly fitted bra can make her look and feel is priceless and makes me love what I do. In addition to helping women look and feel their best, I also love helping women to start their very own mobile bra and bodywear business. The direct selling channel is a great avenue for female entrepreneurship and Essential Bodywear is a company founded 15 years ago by women, with a mission of uplifting and supporting women through great products and female entrepreneurship. Bra fittings and bodywear styling are always free and every purchase supports a woman in business. Every woman deserves to look and feel her best so why not have your very own bra and bodywear stylist? I’m Amy Holland, at your service!

A Dozen Wines for Summer BBQ Season
L
ong, hot summer days are perfect for relaxing with a glass of chilled wine in hand – or entertaining a group of friends while they do the same. This must-have guide to wines for summer will cover different wines to pair with various types of summer fare from BBQ to picnic options to freshly caught fish. Many people opt for white or rosé wines in the summer but red wines certainly have their place as well. In fact, Malbec and Zinfandel are two of the smartest pairings for BBQ meats. Silver Top Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina is loaded with aromas of cinnamon and blackberry that lead to abundant flavors of plum, dark cherries and blackberry jam. This is a perfect wine to pair with BBQ ribs or burgers due to its impeccable balance and structure. If steak

by Jack Farrell or pork chops are on your menu, pick up a bottle of red Zinfandel, particularly one from the Lodi region of California. A big, bold and spicy wine like the Windstorm Zinfandel would be ideal to open up with your ribeye or New York strip. Planning on grilling something a little bit lighter? Try a red Sancerre or Burgundy, such as Charles Vienot Hautes Cotes de Beaune Burgundy, with cedar planked salmon or veggie burgers. A robust Cotesdu-Rhone (a blend of Grenache and Syrah) pairs nicely with grilled chicken. For a real treat, pick up Chateau d’Aigueville Cotesdu-Rhone, a personal favorite, to have with BBQ chicken. For spicier fare like grilled firecracker shrimp or jerk chicken, dry rosé should be your go-to. The Bouchard Rose or the Les Ligeriens Rose d’Anjou will both please your palate and your wallet!
Chill down a few of the following wines, pack a basket full of fresh veggies, fruit, cold cuts and sandwiches and you’re set up for a perfect picnic! Wines like Cuvée Royale Tavel, Voltaire Vouvray, Niverdiere Chinon (a light Cabernet Franc), or Casa Farrelli Prosecco will pair with most picnic fare and are delicious on their own as well. Hint: pair the Vouvray with fresh fruit for a refreshing dessert! Pair some freshly caught fish with the right glass of wine and you’ll be one happy camper. Serve a crisp Sauvignon Blanc like the Cuvee Catherine Sancerre with walleye or a dry to semi-dry Riesling like Carl Sittmann with trout. Cheers to warm summer days, delicious food and the perfect wines to go along with both!

Chateau St. Croix
winery
While the harsh Wisconsin winters may not seem suitable for grape-growing, the climate and soil are surprisingly forgiving. In fact, grapes have been growing in the vineyards of Chateau St. Croix since 2004. The vineyard is home to six varieties of hybrid cold hearty grapes: St. Croix, E.S. 6-16-30, Prairie Star, Sabrevois, Frontenac, Marquette and King of the North. The grapes have been delicately planted by hand on a 2.5-acre parcel of the 55-acre grounds of the Chateau St. Croix. We proudly use cold hearty grapes grown in Minnesota and Wisconsin. That being said some grapes just don't want to grow here, so we source them from the places they are best grown, mostly California, Washington State and Oregon. Upon maturity, our crop should produce approximately 5 tons of grapes. As our winery grows, we hope to increase our vineyard to ten acres. We prune our vines several times a year and harvest the grapes in the Fall, usually September when the sugar and acid content is optimum for wine making. We then "cold soak" the grapes, crush and de-stem them and start fermentation.
