Stagehands put up a stage on their own in Columbus

Adam Senarighi, owner and director of operations for Hay Creek Entertainment, has been in entertainment labor and event production for decades — setting up the stage for White Bear Township Day, assembling video walls for White Bear Lake High School’s Performing Arts Center, providing tech support for Boston Scientific’s annual employee recognition program in Arden Hills and managing audio and video for much of the

3M Open in Blaine.

“Stagehands, engineers, technicians — a venue will call and say, ‘Hey, we’ve got soand-so coming. They need 20 stagehands.’ OK, no problem.

We’ll provide the stagehands,” Senarighi said. “We are breaking into more and more production. Then we decided, about a year and a half ago, let’s do a venue (of our own).”

This year, Hay Creek Entertainment opened The Outskirts, an outdoor entertainment venue next to Running Aces Casino, Hotel

and Racetrack in Columbus.

On Fridays and Saturdays, audiences can attend concerts and “Pull-up Pictures,” movie marathons shown on a 120-panel LED video wall.

Viewers can pull up a lawn chair or a vehicle, drive-in style.

Though the venue is locally owned, the setup is state of the art. Senarighi and Willey have used their experience to design a clean space with utility, tech and security capabilities

Ready, set, school

A new school year brings plenty to look forward to, and local kids have no shortage of answers. From reuniting with friends and meeting a new teacher to showing off a new backpack, decorating a locker and getting back on the ice for hockey season, students are ready for what’s ahead. We asked local kids what they’re most excited about this school year — here’s what they had to say.

Working with high school students is a full-circle moment for Jimetra W. Roumo, the new assistant principal at Mounds View High School. Twenty years ago, she began her career in education by teaching high school biology and chemistry in Rosenberg, Texas, just outside of Houston. In the Jimetra W. intervening years, Roumo Roumo worked as an elementary school counselor and a middle school instructional specialist.

“I have literally worked in all phases of K-12 education, which is not typical,” Roumo noted in a recent interview.

Each position, however, has prepared Roumo for her role at Mounds View High School.

While teaching in Rosenberg, Roumo applied for a high school counseling position, but was offered an elementary school position instead. “Honestly, it

“Language is all about working memory,” Younk said. “If working memory decreases, processing decreases.”

Sheets described how hearing loss can lead individuals to walk more slowly and develop impaired balance, which increase the risk of falling and injuries.

“Our balance system and our inner-ear hearing system, they’re shared nerve pathways,” Sheets said. “Even mild hearing loss can triple a person’s

Hearing loss and dementia are linked.

Numerous recent studies have shown a clear association. One dataset from a study funded by the National Institute on Aging found that “prevalence of dementia among the participants with moderate-tosevere hearing loss was 61% higher than prevalence among participants who had normal hearing.” The same data showed that prevalence of dementia was 32% lower among those who used hearing aids.

According to Doctors of Audiology Katherine Sheets of Midwest Hearing and Rebecca Younk of Associated Hearing, hearing loss is the most modifiable factor in reducing the risk of dementia.

“The thought process (experts) have right now is that our brain has a certain cognitive load capacity. When you start to lose your hearing, the brain is pulling resources from other areas to try to accommodate,” explained Sheets. “You’re basically putting it in overload.”

Younk noted that, because hearing loss is usually gradual, the brain will develop coping skills. Once those coping skills no longer work, a person can

risk of falling … When you are less aware of your surroundings, less aware of noises around you, then I think you lose that spatial awareness. That can cause issues with feeling stable.”

Hearing aids can mitigate many of these risks and are more convenient and less noticeable than ever before.

“I work in the industry, and a lot of times, I have to (take a hard) look at the patient to know if they’re wearing them or not,” said Sheets. “They’re pretty darn invisible, especially when inserted correctly.”

Sheets also noted that the earlier those with hearing loss seek help, the easier they will find the adjustment process to be.The gradual nature of hearing loss, however, can make knowing when to seek help tricky.

Younk recommends people get their hearing tested once every 10 years; after age 50, hearing should be tested every one to three years.

Younk said that possible signs of hearing loss include needing closed captions to watch TV, asking people to repeat themselves more frequently, especially in a poor acoustic environment, or noticing that family members are mumbling much more than they used to.

“If you can’t hear the fact that you’ve just changed from carpet to hardwood floor, that’s a good (sign),” Younk said.

Both doctors also gave tips on how to protect one’s hearing. Younk noted that being in close proximity to a jackhammer without protection for even five seconds can cause hearing loss. Less obvious and more pernicious, however, are frequent, sustained noises.

Farmers, for instance, suffer hearing loss from loud equipment and noisy livestock. Dental hygienists, meanwhile, are exposed to constant ringing from drills.

Sheets, meanwhile, said that many people set earbuds and AirPods too loud. She recommends people go into their smartphones’ settings and turn on headphone notifications to alert them if they are listening to something too loud for too long.

“The number of people that have constant AirPods, earbuds … going in their ears all the time?” said Sheets. “I think we will be seeing a lot of hearing loss earlier in life.”

CONSTRUCTION BRIEF Community center parking lot construction progresses

Construction on Shoreview Community Center’s lower parking in ongoing through mid-September, including the following projects: • Grinding up the old pavement and installing new asphalt in the oldest portion of the lower level parking lot.

• Installing a new sanitary sewer pipe from the manhole near the Haffeman Pavilion to the new lift station location at the southeast corner of the parking lot.

• Constructing a retaining wall along the east side of the lot to create additional parking spaces.

• Replacing damaged curb and upgrading ADAaccessible ramps.

During construction, parking will be limited to small portion of the lower level parking lot. The city of Shoreview encourages visitors to use the upper level parking lot and follow posted signs.

Additional improvements with fewer anticipated impacts to community center visitors will start in early fall, including: • Expansion and paving of the City Hall service driveway and parking area.

• Minor storm utility improvements.

• Curb replacement and ADA accessibility upgrades in the upper level parking lot.

• Trail rehabilitation.

• Construction of a new trail connection between the Common Park trails and the Mounds Avenue playground.

Another summer wasted?

O

f all the media I consumed this summer, no moment cut me to the quick so much as the sirens’ song in “The Odyssey.” Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, describes the song, in part, as follows: “All the things you want it to be. Then all the things you wish you never wished for. It … told you what you most want is what you most can't have.

And what you most can't have is what you already had. And lost.”

During my first job out of college, I rented out a relative’s basement.

One night in late August, as I went to get him for dinner, I notice he had a tired look on his face. I asked Looking if he was OK. After a long draw his e-cigarette and a desolate Out with from sigh, he responded, “Another summer… wasted.”

Logan Little did I know that, while Logan Gion working that job, I would fall ill with multiple health conditions, including a rare sleep disorder that only 100,000 people in the country have. This year, after 15 years of struggle and effort, my health team told me they are confident my conditions are well-managed. Relieved, I felt I could finally resume the race of life.

But I’m 15 years behind. Fifteen summers, not to mention the summer of my youth, wasted.

I feel extra guilty when people tell me they’re proud of me, or worse, that I should be proud of myself. My parents and siblings tell me I’m such a hard worker—but I was always a hard worker, so if this health stuff never happened to me, imagine how well I’d be doing.

I confided this to a close friend recently. He told me that, when he was growing up, his parent had a different health condition, and he wished that parent had spent 15 years of their life understanding and managing it instead of trying to live a “normal life.” Intellectually, I knew my friend was right, but emotionally, all I felt was a bitterness in my heart — grief at what could have been.

A coworker helped me break through this murk.

She’s younger than I am, about the age I was when my health started deteriorating. At lunch, she told me about a promising guy she met while she went out after work.

Envious, I said, “I wish I could just have someone relationship-worthy fall into my lap.”

“Why, what are you doing this weekend?” She asked.

“I’m catching up with a dozen or so friends I haven’t seen in a while,” I responded.

“Wow, I wish I had 12 friends,” she said.

How foolish have I been? Had I not moved back home 15 years ago, I would not have such strong relationships with my family. I would not have the joyous time I’ve spent with my friends. I would not be writing a column at a workplace that supports me, for communities that I cherish.

I have not been wasting time; I have been investing it.

Watching “The Odyssey,” I realized that a great many people feel the way that I felt. We beat ourselves up for not using our time wisely, but using time is what makes us wise.

I wish I knew this lesson 15 years ago so that I could tell my relative to cut himself a break. The reason he was so tired was because he was recovering from a heart attack. He used to smoke a pack of cigarettes a day. That summer, he used e-cigarettes to wean himself off the habit—hardly a waste of time.

Don’t worry, I’ll tell him how I feel next time I call, and I’ll be kind to myself for not doing it sooner.

I won’t fall for that siren song again.

A busy summer winds down — looking ahead

W

here did this summer go? It seems like just yesterday we were celebrating Slice of Shoreview, and now the Minnesota State Fair is just around the corner, students are preparing to return to school, and many of our summer programs are coming to an end.

As we transition into the Movers & school year, I want to remind Shakers everyone that Sue Denkinger public safety begins with each of us. Please slow down in school zones and watch out for school crossings. Many Shoreview students walk or bike to school, and a few extra seconds of attention can make a real difference in keeping our children safe.

Along with extra school traffic, you’ll also spot some construction activity at the community center.

Improvements to the lower-level parking lot began August 17 and are expected to be completed by

mid-September. We’re adding parking spaces at the eastern end of the lot, as well as lighting, security cameras, and two EV charging stations. Thank you for your patience while this work is underway, particularly during the Farmers’ Market. Please use the upper-level parking area whenever possible during construction.

Keeping our city running smoothly takes teamwork, which is why City Manager Brad Martens and I spent time this summer meeting with our state legislators. We met with Kelly Moller, Paul Gottfried and John Marty to discuss how we can work together most effectively on issues important to Shoreview.

We appreciate their continued support at the state level, including on public safety and funding for our new fire station.

One of the highlights of summer was Night to Unite, and I want to thank everyone who helped make it such a success.

Shoreview had 67 participating neighborhood groups, with eight teams of elected officials and city staff visiting as many gatherings as possible. The Ramsey County

Sheriff’s Office and Lake Johanna Fire Department also joined the celebrations, helping make these events memorable for families throughout our community.

These gatherings are a wonderful reminder that strong neighborhoods are built on connection and looking out for one another.

Finally, I want to acknowledge our neighbors in the Shamrock Park area who have expressed concerns about the proposed Hillview Business Park development in northern Arden Hills. While Shoreview has limited authority over the project, we are listening to residents and supporting them as they work with Arden Hills and Ramsey County to address concerns about traffic, safety, noise, lighting and environmental impacts.

Summer may be winding down, but there is plenty happening in Shoreview. Thank you for continuing to make this a community where neighbors care about neighbors.

Poison ivy warning needed at Snail Lake Park

I am writing to alert Shoreview residents about a poison ivy hazard at Snail Lake Park that I believe deserves greater attention.

On July 18, I was exposed to poison ivy while walking on the path near the pavilion area at Snail Lake Park. The poison ivy was growing extensively immediately adjacent to the path and in areas accessible to park users. I subsequently developed a significant reaction that required treatment with oral steroids.

What concerns me most, however, is that this is not simply a risk to individual adults walking through the park. I have photographs showing children actually playing in the area where the poison ivy is growing. Camps and other organized children’s activities are also taking place in this area.

I notified Ramsey County about the noxious weed in May. The county has now told me that it plans to mow or spray the area to push the poison ivy back into the woods and evaluate whether it can be eradicated. I appreciate that the county is taking steps to address the noxious weed.

However, while the poison ivy remains present, I believe clearly visible warning signs should be posted.

Mowing or spraying may reduce the noxious weed, but it does not alert children, parents, camp staff or other park users to its danger. A simple poison ivy warning sign near paths and heavily used areas would allow people to recognize the hazard and avoid contact.

I am sharing this information because I do not want another family to experience what happened to me.

Regardless of how my individual claim is ultimately resolved, I hope Ramsey County will take reasonable steps to make park users aware of this hazard, especially in areas where children are actively playing.

A man in his forties went for a walk Aug. 17 and became trapped waist-deep in mud in a marshy area near Poplar Lake. Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office and state patrol used K9 units, drones and a helicopter to pull the man out. RCSO recognized the team effort necessary for the rescue.

Grand jury indicts former Mounds View High School teacher

U.S. Attorney Daniel N. Rosen has announced that Ted Matthew Bennett, a former Mounds View High School teacher, has been indicted by a grand jury for his alleged role in knowingly persuading, inducing, enticing and coercing a minor to engage in sexual activity from around Jan. 1, 2025, through on or about Nov. 11, 2025.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, “When a person is indicted, they are given formal notice that it is believed that they committed a crime … For potential felony charges, a prosecutor will present the evidence to an impartial group of citizens called a grand jury … The grand jury listens to the prosecutor and witnesses, and then votes in secret on whether they believe that enough evidence exists to charge the person with a crime.”

According to Ramsey County charging documents, on Nov. 10, 2025, police responded to the high school regarding a report of an alleged inappropriate relationship between a teacher and student. The document also alleges that Bennett communicated for months via text messages and emails, offered alcohol and drugs, and engaged in sexual conduct with a minor student.

Bennett had his initial appearance hearing before a U.S. Magistrate Judge on Aug. 10.

SCHOOL BRIEF USDA announces new income guidelines for free and reduced-price eligibility

The U.S. Department of Agriculture updated its income guidelines for free and reducedprice eligibility for Child Nutrition Programs.

Though Minnesota provides free meals for students who attend schools that participate in the National School Lunch Program, schools must still collect applications for educational benefits to determine eligibility categories and receive the correct federal and state reimbursements.

Under the 2026-27 federal income guidelines, families may qualify for free benefits with monthly

incomes up to $2,345 for a family of two, increasing by $615 for each additional family member.

Families may qualify for reducedprice benefits with monthly incomes up to $3,337 for a family of two, increasing by $875 for each additional family member.

In addition to qualifying based on income, families may also qualify based on participation in assistance programs such as SNAP, MFIP or FDPIR, or through student status such as foster care, Head Start, homelessness or migrant status.

Families that meet the eligibility requirements should complete the application to help their children’s schools and to receive additional support such as summer grocery benefits, utility discounts and test fee waivers.

The application can be submitted at any time during the school year and is available through a student’s school or district.

“Under Governor Walz’s Free School Meals for Kids program, Minnesota schools have provided over 300 million free meals to students across the state, saving families an estimated $1,000 per student each year,” said Minnesota Department of Education Commissioner Willie Jett. “When families complete the application for educational benefits, it helps us continue providing nutritious food to children and helps schools and families access additional supports and resources.”

New shell egg law allows greater food donations

As of Aug. 1, 2026, charitable food assistance programs in Minnesota that receive donated eggs from retailers are now allowed to distribute them to end consumers up to 30 days past their quality assurance date.

Gov. Tim Walz signed the Shell Egg Bill (SF3891) into law on May 26, 2026. For eggs, a “best by…” or quality assurance date represents the guarantee of maintaining grade (usually AA or A).

It is not an indicator of food safety. Therefore, eggs with a past-quality-assurance date may still be safe to consume, provided they have been stored and handled appropriately.

To be donated, the eggs must be: • Contained in original packaging (repackaging is not permitted) • Previously candled and graded • Not more than 30 days past the original quality assurance date • Continuously refrigerated On the receiving end, food assistance programs must apply a new label to the eggs with: • Name of the food shelf • “Distribute within 30 days of carton date” OR “Distribute by ‘date’” • “Donated eggs – not for resale” Eggs that have not been distributed to consumers by the end of 30 days past the original quality assurance date must be discarded. RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office reported the following selected incidents in Arden Hills: • On Aug. 3 at the intersection of County Road I West and Schutta Road, deputies responded to a report of a large number of juveniles who were arriving and gathering at the Arden Hills Army Training Center.

The group dispersed when deputies arrived and said they’d been “invited” to the location on TikTok. The matter is under investigation.

• On Aug. 12 in the 3900 block of Northwoods Drive, an employee from a law firm reported that someone has been making unauthorized withdrawals from the business’s bank account. The matter is under investigation.

• On Aug. 13 in the 1400 block of Paul Kirkwold Drive, deputies arrested a 23-year-old man from Minneapolis on an active warrant out of Ramsey County.

• On Aug. 14 in the 4200 block of Lexington Avenue N., deputies issued a trespass notice to a 30-yearold man from Brooklyn Center after they responded to a call from his employer, who said the man wouldn’t leave the premises after being terminated.

• On Aug. 14 in the 1900 block of Highway 96 W., a 50-year-old woman from Coon Rapids reported that someone used her check card to put gas in their car without her knowledge or permission. The incident is under investigation.

• On Aug. 5 at the intersection of Tanglewood Drive and Hodgson Road, deputies responded to a report of a crash involving a Subaru Forester and a Honda Fit, assisted in the exchange of insurance information and arranged for one of the vehicles to be towed.

• On Aug. 5 at the intersection of Lexington Avenue S. and Victoria Street N., deputies responded to a property damage accident involving a Subaru Forester driven by a 26-year-old woman from Duluth and a 34-year-old man who was arrested for DWI after deputies determined he may have been impaired.

• On Aug. 6 in the 4400 block of Chatsworth Street N., a 19-year-old woman reported seeing a man go into her vehicle and rifle through its center console before walking over to a Toyota Highlander and driving away. The incident is under investigation.

• On Aug. 7 in the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue N., deputies responded to a report of a disturbance and arrested a 42-yearold man from St. Paul for DWI. He also had an active and outstanding arrest warrant.

• On Aug. 7 in the 1100 block of W. Royal Oaks Drive, a 78-year-old woman reported that she was the victim of a scam during which someone convinced her to deposit thousands of dollars into her checking account, which was then stolen. The incident is under investigation.

• On Aug. 7 in the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue N., deputies took a shoplifting report at Target after store employees saw people leave the store without paying for merchandise. The matter is under investigation.

• On Aug. 7 in the 1000 block of Highway 96 W., a 45-year-old man from Plymouth reported that someone from Shoreview sold him knockoff pickleball paddles on Facebook Marketplace. The matter is under investigation.

• On Aug. 8 in the 5900 block of Rice Creek Parkway, deputies issued a theft citation to a 24-year-old man from Andover caught attempting to steal merchandise from a Speedway.

• On Aug. 10 in the 1300 block of Meadow Court, a 42-year-old woman reported being bitten by someone’s dog while she was out for a walk.

• On Aug. 12 in the 3500 block of Owasso Street, a 55-year-old woman reported that five packages of her mail were stolen from her apartment building’s lobby. The incident is under investigation.

• On Aug. 14 in the 600 block of Harriet Avenue, a 20-year-old with a sign-and-release warrant was stopped in traffic, provided an opportunity to sign the warrant, and released at the scene.

• On Aug. 15 in the 1000 block of Gramsie Road, deputies issued a trespass notice to a 33-year-old man from Cottage Grove after receiving a report that he acted disorderly at Green Mill. Deputies made a traffic stop on the vehicle he was driving.

ay Lorang compared himself to an extroverted, midwestern mom as he searched for a photo of his first theatrical role: corn in Lincoln Elementary’s production of “Oklahoma!”

“Ten years — I’ve been doing (theater) my entire life, ever since I started first grade,” Lorang said. An incoming sophomore at White Bear Lake Area High School, Lorang has been a part of multiple middle school musicals as well as White Bear’s productions of “Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella” last fall.

Lorang feels that, by acting on stage, he can create a more nuanced picture in people’s minds about those with autism.

“When you see an autistic person, you don’t usually see someone that’s so excited to be around (people). I actually hate being alone. I’m an extrovert.” Lorang said. “I’m very much the opposite of what you think.”

Lorang noted that, introvert or extrovert, theater is a great activity for young people with autism.

“If you want your kid to be in an

inclusive environment that’s going to challenge them and get them physical activity while also not being too overthe-top, theater’s great, especially musicals,” Lorang said. He added that people with autism who don’t like bright lights will enjoy working on the crew side of production while those who hate dark spaces will thrive on stage.

Lorang, specifically, thrives in the spotlight.

“I love the sound of my own voice,” Lorang said. “I love singing. I love dancing … the joy to perform and the ability to make others happy.”

Cathlin McKenzie-Larsen, board president and co-founder of the crawl and the Bald Eagle Lake Arts organization, said she is most excited to see who comes back for round three. “I look forward to seeing returning artists. I hope we see a lot of familiar and new faces, because it’s going to be interesting to see what the numbers look like. We’ve got someone helping us with social media this year, and she’s getting the word out.”

The crawl gained success in 2024 as a way for local artists to show their work around Bald Eagle Lake. Toward the end of the year, founders McKenzie-Larsen, Carly Ogata, Sharon Neylon and Alyssa Boldischar reestablished themselves as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization called Bald Eagle Lake Arts to expand efforts in bringing art and connection throughout the community.

New this year is a first-of-its-kind shuttle bus service that will pick up attendees from White Bear Lake Area High School to visit different artist spots. Each bus will be equipped with wheelchair-accessible entry points, which Ogata noted would help improve accessibility around the lake. While there will be fewer stops around because of the addition, Neylon said the sites themselves will be larger than in previous years, giving artists more time to socialize between stops.

“We wanted to have a limited number of stops to help with the flow of the shuttle.

Through Bald Eagle Lake Arts’ partnership with the White Bear Lake Center for the Arts, McKenzie-Larsen said more artists from the center will be featured.

Ogata added that half the sites will emphasize music, ranging from folk to traditional Irish. This year will also see the return of the kids’ activities corner, this time sponsored by the Bald Eagle Lake Women’s Club. In total, over 100 artists (including 62 returning artists) across 10 host sites will be featured throughout the 2026 crawl.

“This year, we opened things up to a few extra artists,” said Ogata. “Right now, we have a wait list, so I think the word is getting around that the crawl has been successful. This way, when we do these cluster sites, we can show a better array of artists, including pottery, fiber, watercolors and photography.”

Food trucks will be located at the lake’s boat launch for artists and attendees to

buy treats and drinks. Specialized Bald Eagle Lake Art Crawl tote bags will also be available for purchase. Though still in its early planning phase, Ogata said the board is looking to create special calendars featuring past artists’ work to sell next year.

“I’m so excited for the day to be here,” said Boldischar. “We’ve been planning since January, so now that we’re in the last month, we’re all excited to feel the vibe again. We’re looking forward to seeing all sorts of people from the community talking to one another and connecting with their neighbors.”

The 2026 Bald Eagle Lake Art Crawl is scheduled to be held around the lake from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12. Artists, volunteers and sponsors who are interested in participating, as well as those looking for more information, can visit the crawl’s website at www.belarts.org.

Native plants: RCWD offer tips for lakeside yards

Caring for a lawn and gardens can be a lot of work — more so for lakeside homes.

Lakeside homeowners must contend with stormwater runoff. Lawns can get soggy patches or miss the rainwater and its nutrients altogether. A homeowner must then use fertilizer treatment on the lawn to keep it green, which leads to chemical and water quality concerns. “‘I have to do yard work. I have to mow. I have to do all these things.’ You don’t actually have to do that. There are alternatives,” said Rice Creek Watershed District (RCWD) Communications and Outreach Manager Kendra Sommerfeld.

The solution to all of these problems?

Native plants.

“They’ve been here for thousands of years. They’ve evolved with the local ecology, our local pollinators,” Sommerfeld said. Because native plants have lived in Minnesota for so many generations, they are more drought tolerant and can resist disease and invasive vegetation.

One type of native plant that Sommerfeld believes is especially helpful for yards with shoreline is the sedge.

Over 100 types of sedges are good for Minnesota yards, and they thrive in wet spots. “Sedges will clump really nicely, so they’re really good border plants.” Sommerfeld said, adding that sedges can give a lawn an ornamental,

manicured aesthetic.

An easy way to tell the difference between sedges and grass is to feel the stems with one’s fingers. Because sedge stems are triangular, one can easily feel the ridges. “Sedges have edges,” Sommerfeld said. She also recommended bulrushes for homeowners who favor a more wild look to their shoreline.

Native plants can also ease work and add variety to gardens. Native grass varieties, like Canada wild rye, are so hardy

that they will survive hungry wildlife and even the first few snowfalls. “When they die off in the fall, grasses are known for becoming these really pretty orange, brown, red colors,” said Sommerfeld, adding that the material is still there during the winter and will regrow come spring.

Local flowers — like Virginia waterleaf, wild bergamot and heath aster — are resilient yet showy, giving homeowners bright, pollinator-friendly gardens from May to October. Because these plants thrive in their native soil, Sommerfeld recommends occasionally taming more eager plants. By definition, native plants

cannot be invasive, but some can be aggressive. “I recommend digging it out or cutting it down,” Sommerfeld said.

“It’s your garden. It’s not a bad thing if (aggressive plants) are spreading around, but if you don’t like it, take them out and try something else.”

Native plants, however, still need some care — comparable to a perennial garden — the first years they are in a yard.

“Most of the time, you have to water them at the very beginning because sometimes we don’t get rain. But after the second or third year, when they’re adult plants, they should have the root system to survive longer periods of drought,” said Sommerfeld. ”In general, it’s easier to maintain because it should taper off. You don’t have to mow every week. You don’t have to fertilize or weed.”

Show and Tell: ISD 621 shares what they did this summer

Students are preparing to once again fill the halls of Mounds View’s schools this September, but during summer break, the buildings were far from empty. Summer school was in session.

For primary school programming, six elementary sites and one kindergarten center held morning classes for more than 520 elementary schoolers, four days each week, from July 7-30. Class sizes were between 6 and 12 pupils, noted Snail Lake Kindergarten Center Principal Ryan

Lang noted that in a survey at the end of summer 2025, staff requested more time to plan for summer lessons.

This year, the district built in a paid planning day before lessons started.

“The summer planning day, 100% of our respondents (to this year’s survey) appreciated that time and mentioned that the impact of their preparedness to welcome students well and jump into instruction was aided by that day of planning,” Lang said.

Lang noted that several staff members desired more consistent

student attendance.

“That’s an obvious, tricky thing in the summer — people are traveling, doing fun things, (and) we want them to do that as well,” Lang said. “Several staff shared that more consistent internal communication would help them.”

“This year, middle school summer programming was fantastic again,” said Area Learning Center Principal Bobbie Olson. “We want to improve their skills in math and reading but also enhance their relationships with peers and adults and continue to be that connector.”

Olson noted that summer middle school participants experienced positive student-to-student and

student-to-adult relationships. She also mentioned the importance of new students and staff getting a jump start on the year by visiting the building in the summer.

“Our rising sixth graders get an opportunity to get into the building in the summer, and some of the staff can get comfortable with the environment,” she said.

Olson noted, however, that summer middle school only has one field trip.

“Kids really like getting out in the community, and we like bringing kids to the community,” Olson said. “The more opportunities we can create there, the better.”

For high school credit recovery, Olson said that Mounds View School District had 215 students participate and 11 graduate. For improvement, Olson highlighted the continued need to identify early the students who are in need of credit recovery.

Community Education Director Karl Brown said, “One of the things that’s great about summer programs is … that we have an opportunity to work with many schools, many principals and many staff members.

I just want to say thank you for all of their work, because we can’t do it without them.”

Mounds View executive director of curriculum and instruction retires Angie Peschel has been with the Mounds View School District since 1998. Now, after 28 years with the district, including seven as executive director of curriculum and instruction, Peschel is retiring.

“Leaving is bittersweet,” Peschel said in a recent interview. “I still feel I have some things to give, yet I think there are people in place that are going to be able to continue the work that’s been started.”

Angie Peschel Peschel began her time in ISD 621 teaching English at Chippewa Middle School. She noted that one of the reasons she stayed with Mounds View for so long was because the district invests in continuous improvement of its staff, offering leadership opportunities. Peschel noted that while she was comfortable teaching at Chippewa, her colleagues encouraged her to take on broader responsibilities.

Peschel became an instructional strategies facilitator, a position in which she coached teachers and collaborated with them on instructional delivery and lesson design.

“I found some joy in that (position),” said Peschel, “because if I can impact two or three teachers, then they can have an impact on the classrooms full of

students that they’re working with. That was really fulfilling for me.”

Peschel then got an administrative license and education specialist degree from the University of St. Thomas. She then moved to the district, becoming a curriculum department coordinator, then a curriculum director, and finally, in 2019, executive director of curriculum and instruction.

Then COVID hit.

“What was helpful during COVID is that we had some systems in place,” Peschel said. “I don’t want to say it was easy, but we were a little better poised to make the shift.”

Peschel explained that the expectation for teachers to deliver all standards to all students every year is not realistic. Prior to COVID, teachers were making judgment calls on which standards to prioritize.

Peschel noted that this created too much variability in the district. The educational base of a student entering Mounds View High School was too different from Chippewa Middle School compared to one coming from Highview Middle School.

Therefore, Peschel and her colleagues at the district brought in all of the teachers and identified the 10 to 15 most important priority standards for each subject.

“Everybody’s going to get this, no matter what school you attend, for each grade level and every content area. How do we make sure everyone gets that base level?” Peschel said. “When COVID came, (instead of), ‘Oh my gosh, how do we make decisions

about what to deliver to students in the limited time we have with them?’ we said, ‘We can go to the priority standards.’”

Peschel noted that another benefit of priority standards is geographical equity.

“We need to make sure that the school a student attends is not a predictor of their success, and one way we can do that is to make sure we’re delivering the prioritized standards that we’ve all agreed to,” Peschel said.

The most recent initiative the Mounds View School District is taking, Peschel noted, is environmental learning, where students absorb lessons in different types of areas, ideally outdoors.

“There’s benefit in bringing kids outside for some learning to happen — using a space to go outside and read your independent reading book … Maybe go outside during a math class and take a look at the different shapes of the leaves and use that for teaching of geometry,” Peschel said. “We’re trying to be intentional … It’s not just about going outside to do the learning.”

Peschel trusts her successor to take the helm on that initiative.

“We really are all in it for the right reason and the same reason,” said Peschel. “It’s better outcomes for kids. If we can have that as our guiding star, we can do amazing things. And we have.”

City of Blaine breaks ground on The Farm development Bader Companies, Elevage and the city of Blaine are announcing a new 70-acre development, named The Farm, near the National Sports Center that will feature a baseball and event stadium as well as retail, dining and hospitality. Blaine anticipates The Farm, now under construction, to open in 2028.

Catching up with Mounds View’s two major leaguers

There’s two Mounds View High School graduates currently in the big leagues: Sam Hentges, class of 2014 and Brett Bateman, class of 2020.

Bateman has made his presence felt for the Blue Jays, who acquired him in a trade from the Chicago Cubs after he played well in the Cubs’ Triple A team at Des Moines.

In the former Gopher’s first 14 games in the majors, batting leadoff, Bateman has collected 18 hits in 59 at-bats for a .305 average with five runs, four RBIs, four walks and one stolen base. Toronto has a 64-68 record.

Meanwhile, Hentges, a major leaguer since 2022, has taken the loss in six games while picking up one win. His earned-run-average is 3.38, allowing 12 earned runs in 32 innings.

The effort coordinates education, outreach and funding from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which provides overtime hours to nearly 300 law enforcement agencies across the state.

So far in 2026, there have been: • 62 alcohol-related traffic fatalities • 179 alcohol-related serious injuries (as of July 13).

• 13,670 DWI arrests From 2020 to 2025, there were: • 815 alcohol-related traffic fatalities (an average of 136 per year) • 2,380 alcohol-related serious injuries (an average of 397 per year) Drivers are encouraged to do their part to end deadly and

serious crashes by committing to having a sober driver every time. The best way to end impaired driving is to have a plan.

• Minnesota’s legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) driving limit is 0.08, but you can be arrested for DWI at lower levels.

• You can lose your driver’s license for up to a year, pay thousands of dollars in costs and possibly go to jail.

• The consequences go further if you’ve been repeatedly arrested for DWI. The same applies if you’re a first-time DWI offender arrested at 0.16 BAC. You must use a device that will test your BAC before you drive to regain legal driving privileges or face at least one year without a driver’s license.

Drivers with two offenses within the last 20 years must use ignition interlock for two years. Drivers with three offenses get six years, and four or more offenses require 10 years of ignition interlock. For more information, visit https://dps. mn.gov/divisions/ots.

was one of the best things to happen because … it really gave me a full scope of all the moving parts that make a school work and make it work well,” Roumo said.

She also feels that the position sharpened her counseling skill set due to the wide range of age levels she served. It also taught her strategies for connecting with families, parents and the community as a whole, she noted.

In 2015, Roumo’s husband got a new job in Minnesota, and Roumo became a middle school counselor at Franklin Middle School in north Minneapolis. While Roumo’s job title was similar, the experience was not.

“It was a starkly different experience from what I had in Texas,” said Roumo. “This was my first experience working in an urban district. Again, I gained a wealth of knowledge and made amazing connections with young people.”

Roumo held this position during both COVID and the George Floyd protests. “We did small groups, virtually, with students,” she recalled. “For some, we had anxiety groups. We had groups around grief because, sadly, there was some loss that had taken place with families during that time. It was also

a challenging time with so much social interest happening in the cities.”

Roumo credits Karon Cunningham, Franklin Middle School’s principal at the time, for encouraging her to pursue an administration license following COVID. Roumo then transitioned from counseling to becoming a differentiation instruction specialist, a position that involves coaching teachers on curriculum standards and how best to deliver those standards to students with different learning styles, such as auditory, visual or tactile.

“I want to show up as a leader … in a way that I would want a principal to show up for my own daughter,” Jimetra W. Roumo Assistant Principal of Mounds View High School “Truly, differentiation is meeting the learner where they are, presenting the information in a way that they are best able to receive and understand,” she said.

As assistant principal at Mounds View High School,

Roumo will be meeting learners where they are, but the questions she asks will be different.

“I want to ensure that … the work that I do is in full alignment with my principal (Rob Reetz) in the mission of the school,” Roumo said. That vision, she explained, is based on the University of Washington Center for Education’s Five Dimensions of Teaching and Learning instructional framework. That framework involves getting each student to answer yes to three questions: Do I belong here? Can I do this?

Is this meaningful?

Roumo plans to approach this vision, and all of her work as assistant principal, through a specific lens.

“I want to show up as a leader … in a way that I would want a principal to show up for my own daughter,” Roumo said. “Is this a decision that I would be okay with as a parent, that I would respect as a community member?”

Roumo keeps these tenets front of mind to honor her mother and aunt, who both worked in education for many decades.

“Readers should know that education is my passion,” she said. “I’m not going to say it levels the playing field, but education is something no one can take from you.”

Wild rice season opens soon; harvesters must ensure rice is ripe As the 2026 wild rice season approaches, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reminds harvesters that while Aug. 15 is the earliest possible legal harvest date, rice stands must also be ripe before they can be harvested legally.

“While Aug. 15 is the official opening date, most rice waters aren’t ripe by that date,” said Ann Geisen, Minnesota DNR wildlife lake specialist. “Trying to harvest rice before it’s ripe can damage the plants. Damaged plants mean fewer grains for harvesters, wildlife, and fewer grains to grow rice plants next year. We remind harvesters to respect the resource and make sure the kernels are ready.”

People interested in harvesting need to know the regulations and can check out the Minnesota DNR website (mndnr. gov/wildlife/shallowlakes/wildrice. html) and newsletter for wild rice conditions this year, tips on harvesting and other important information to know before heading out.

Harvesters are allowed to take ripe wild rice during the harvesting season that runs from Aug. 15 through Sept. 30, but Minnesota’s green rice law makes it illegal to harvest unripe or “green”

rice, even within the dates of the harvest season. So, although rice beds might look like they are ready, ricers must make sure rice is ripe before attempting to harvest it.

According to Geisen, there are a few things to look for to know if rice is ready: • The bottom part of the plant has started to turn brown. When rice kernels are ripe, the rest of the plant starts to die back for the season. If the bottom part of the stems and leaves are starting to turn brown, this is a sign that the kernels might be ready.

• The inside of the kernels are firm, not soft or milky. As the kernel develops inside the hull, it starts out soft and milky. As it gets ripe, the inside of the kernel becomes firm, with no liquid present. If you break a kernel and it snaps instead of bends, that means the kernel is ripe.

• When the plant is gently shaken, the kernels easily fall off the plant. This is the most important sign that the rice is ripe. If the kernels are not falling easily, the rice is not ripe. If the kernels are not falling easily, some people hit the plant harder. This is what damages the plants.

Harvesters are required to be licensed

unless they are residents under 18 years of age and accompanied by a licensed harvester. Tribal members who possess a valid Tribal identification card from a federally recognized Tribe located in Minnesota do not need a state wild rice harvesting license.

Harvesters also need to know where rice harvesting may be restricted, including national parks, national wildlife refuges, scientific and natural areas and American Indian reservations. Details about these restrictions and other regulations are available on the Minnesota DNR website (mndnr.gov/regulations/ wildrice).

Minnesota DNR wildlife staff compile a wild rice harvesting outlook report each year. The report will be available

by Aug. 17 on the Minnesota DNR’s wild rice management webpage (mndnr.gov/ wildlife/shallowlakes/wildrice.html) along with license, regulation and safety information, and DNR contacts for more information about local conditions.

Early reports from Minnesota DNR and Tribal biologists indicate favorable conditions across central and northern Minnesota, with individual waters ranging from fair to great.

“With drought conditions throughout

much of Minnesota, water levels on lakes and rivers are lower than normal.

Some rice waters may not be accessible by canoe,” Geisen said. “Harvesters definitely need to scout ricing waters to ensure access.”

The Minnesota DNR sends out periodic newsletters about rice harvesting topics. People can sign up to receive the email newsletters on the Minnesota DNR homepage (mndnr.gov) by finding the “get email updates” box, entering an email address and selecting the “go” button. Then in the subscription list, check the box for “wild rice harvesting.”

Since wild rice is ripening at the same time as Minnesota’s early waterfowl hunting seasons, over-water waterfowl hunters are urged to be aware of wild ricers nearby no matter where they hunt. Those who plan to hunt the early teal season on the Leech Lake, White Earth or Mille Lacs reservations should be aware of hunting restrictions on or near wild rice waters. Mounds View ranks in Minnesota’s top 10 public high schools

U.S. News is releasing a list ranking more than 27,000 public high schools nationwide. Mounds View High School placed in the top 500 in the country and ninth-best in the state. Meanwhile, the list placed

Irondale High School in Minnesota’s top 50.

The list examined six criteria when ranking schools. The first, college readiness, measured the percentage of seniors who took an Advanced Placement course and scored 3 out of 5 or higher on the AP test. The second, college curriculum breadth, looked at the number of seniors who took four or more AP courses and scored 3 out of 5 or higher on each AP test. The third and fourth, state assessment proficiency and performance, compared a school’s state assessment scores against other schools in the state as well as against expected scores for a school’s demographic makeup.

The fifth, underserved student performance, assessed learning outcomes for Black, Hispanic and low-income students. The sixth and final, graduation rate, tracked students who completed high school in four years.

U.S. News used 2023-2024 state assessment data to compile this year’s list.

Lake Vadnais Grand Events ‘serves needs’ of community

Events, located at Bigwood Brewery at 3429 Centerville Road in Vadnais Heights, will celebrate its first anniversary this fall.

Vice President Jamey Worley says that when the venue opened, they assumed it would be mostly for weddings, but they have quickly learned the space has been used for several other occasions.

“We do a lot of private events in the Lakeside tent, whether it’s a groom’s dinner or just birthday parties, retirement parties or just casual gatherings.

That’s been the biggest surprise about the property,” she said.

“We have done a 1-year-old’s birthday because mom and dad wanted a birthday party, but they have to invite 50 people, and they don’t want to do it in their living room. That makes me feel good because we are offering a spot for the community to come and do those things … Big or small, we do them all.”

Bigwood Brewery has been around since 2009. According to owner Jason Medvec, it was the 19th brewery licensed in the state; now there are over 200 breweries in Minnesota. The brewery was in downtown White Bear Lake below Kellerman’s Event Center from 2011 to 2024 before it relocated to its current location in Vadnais Heights.

The brewery needed more space and wanted to expand to also offer an event center.

“It was such a cool building and a unique piece of property; it just needed to live and breathe again,” Medvec said.

When the property hit the market, they toured it with the mayor and city planner. “You should have seen the inside of the building when we first walked in. It was destroyed. It had been vacant for 10 years at that point.”

The vandalism, critters and mold didn’t discourage them. “I said, ‘I’ll take it.’”

Medvec was attracted to the property for its potential, space and historical value. For many years, the site was known as Garceau Corner. The Garceaus, a French-Canadian family, traveled north from St. Paul’s Landing

through present-day Little Canada and homesteaded at and/or near the present-day intersection of Centerville Road and Edgerton Street.

“They settled here and brought all the property, built these buildings,” Medvec explained. “The market building (the white building next door to the brewery) was the very first commercial real estate building built in Vadnais Heights. I used to shop here when it was the hardware store, and I bought one of the backpack blowers that we used to clean off this property. I still use it today.”

In addition to the Lakeside tent, Guests can rent out the taproom, Rathskeller Club, The Viola Garceau Room, Lake Vadnais Ballroom or the Meadow.

Worley says her favorite space — the space that is used the most often for weddings — is the outdoor Meadow space. “It’s kind of my baby,” she said.

“No matter what time of year, it is beau-

tiful back there.”

Vadnais Heights residents Sydney and Brandon Kaufman were married at Lake Vadnais Grand Events June 19.

While the two were looking for venues, they stumbled upon the venue online and were surprised to learn it was a part of Big Wood Brewery, which happens to be right down the street from their home. They toured the space and knew they had found their venue.

“It just clicked right from the start,” Sydney explained. They loved that it was a new venue and were impressed by the thoughtful touches that were put into the design of the spaces. As someone who used to work in the wedding industry, Sydney said there are a lot of couples who are searching for something that feels “low-key” from a stress perspective but doesn’t compromise the elegance of the event.

“I think the venue is a good marriage of a relaxed and a low-key energy while

also still looking very upscale and beautiful,” she explained.

Like Worley, Sydney said she fell in love with the outdoor Meadow space.

“It’s super lovely back there, and it’s kind of tucked away where you would never know it was back there,” she said.

“It’s quiet, it’s quaint and it’s really beautiful.”

During their wedding, they also learned about the property’s unique history. Brandon’s uncle told their guests about when his father and grandfather, who owned an auto body shop in the area, would go to the store on the property for parts.

The market building, which dates back to the ’30s, has served as a dance hall, gas station, market and even a restaurant. Now that the event center side of the business is up and running, Medvec says they are thinking about the future of that building and hoping for a possible restoration. There is now a fresh coat of paint on the exterior of the building, but now the focus has turned inside to see if it can be salvaged. Currently, the space is used for storage, but one day they hope it can be used for another purpose.

“We are really trying to keep the original buildings here and not just level it and build a high-rise apartment complex,” Medvec said. “We are trying to utilize what was here and bring some energy and life back to what was a pretty famous corner.”

Hay Creek Entertainment opened The Outskirts this year, providing an outdoor concert and movie venue for the northeast Metro.

In addition to safety and design, Senarighi noted that location and affordability make The Outskirts a major draw for nearby residents.

“People do not want to go to Minneapolis for entertainment anymore,” Senarighi said. “It’s just not worth it: drive down there, parking, waiting to find parking, walking three or four blocks to the venue, going through security. Then, the concert’s over — now, the mass exodus; now, you’re waiting in traffic or a parking ramp for an hour to get out.”

By contrast, The Outskirts can comfortably hold 4,000 people for a concert or 50 cars plus lawn-chair seating for a movie night. Attendees can park in the Running Aces lot and easily access Interstate 35 on the way out. Because Hay Creek Entertainment is a local company, visitors can skip many of the fees associated with tickets,

concessions and merchandise, making Hay Creek’s events reasonably priced for couples, families or friend groups.

“People need affordability, especially these days,” said Jeff Willey, Hay Creek Entertainment’s production manager.

“We want it to be a full experience, but we don’t want to break the bank … We can give a little piece of happiness to the community by offering something that’s a little bit more affordable.”

The Outskirts hosts events mainly on Fridays and Saturdays, 15201 Running Aces Blvd., Columbus, next to Running Aces Casino, Hotel and Racetrack.

DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH BRIEF MDH, MDA confirm Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, salmonella cases linked to alfalfa sprouts Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) officials are warning Minnesota consumers not to eat alfalfa sprouts sold under the Calco and Everything Sprouts brands due to a multistate outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) and salmonella infections.

Twenty-three Minnesotans became ill between July 8 and Aug. 8 with salmonella and/or various strains of STEC. Two people have been hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported.

In addition to the Minnesota cases, Wisconsin investigators have identified 18 cases, with additional illnesses identified in other states. The number of illnesses will likely increase as the investigation progresses.

The illnesses have been linked to eating alfalfa sprouts produced by Everything Sprouts, a Minnesota grower, and sold

NEWS BRIEF under the Calco and Everything Sprouts brands to restaurants and grocery stores.

Health officials recommend people check for alfalfa sprouts from Calco or Everything Sprouts and throw them away. MDH and MDA are working with health officials from Wisconsin, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other states to identify the source and scope of contamination.

Symptoms of illness caused by STEC typically include stomach cramps and diarrhea, often with bloody stools, but only a low-grade or no fever. People typically become ill two to five days after exposure, but this period can range from one to eight days. Most people recover in five to seven days. However, STEC infections can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a severe complication that involves acute kidney failure and other severe problems.

Diarrhea associated with STEC infections generally should not be treated with antibiotics, as this can promote the development of HUS. Anyone who believes they may have developed an STEC infection should contact their

healthcare provider.

Symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever. Symptoms usually begin within 12 to 96 hours after exposure, but they can begin up to two weeks after exposure.

Infections usually clear in five to seven days, but about 28% of laboratoryconfirmed cases require hospitalization.

Many salmonella infections in otherwise healthy people do not require medical treatment. More serious infections occasionally occur. For those who seek medical care, most do not require antibiotics. However, antibiotic treatment may be needed in some cases.
