Maplewood Development Inc. (MDI) and the city of Arden Hills are asking for public comment regarding Hillview Business Park, a proposed 972,200-square-foot light industrial complex. The development would occupy 64 acres on the northern end of the Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant (TCAAP) site near County Road I and Interstate 35W. A neighborhood meeting hosted by those entities will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, at Arden Hills City Hall, 1245 W. Highway 96. While the project is geographically in Arden Hills, the closest residents to the
project are those who live in the Shamrock Park neighborhood in Shoreview. Due to the project’s proposed size, the Minnesota Environmental Quality Board required MDI to prepare an environmental impact study (EIS), present the report to the public and receive public comment. The City of Arden Hills hosted this presentation and comment session on July 8. During the presentation, Jennifer Haskamp of Swanson Haskamp Consulting presented developmental conditions the federal government had placed on the property. Just before schools closed for the summer this year, Ramsey County Library Friends and county libraries launched a pilot program to send take-home art and reading kits to second grade students at 15 schools in the Mounds View and Roseville school districts. With the help of several community volunteers, more than 1,300 kits were assembled over two days. Each kit included: • A free children’s book for the child to keep • A library-designed craft activity with supplies and instructions • Information about library programs, especially the Summer Reading Program • Details about library services and locations • For Roseville students, a coupon for a free book from a Ramsey County Library Friends used bookstore. The idea of sending kits home emerged during Operation Metro Surge, when both library staff and the

The Shoreview City Council is denying appeals for all conditional use and variance requests regarding a property at 5423 Carlson Road that abuts Turtle Lake. Legendary hockey coach Herb Brooks previously lived at the address. The current owners, through a liaison with Charles Cudd Co., had asked the council for permission to build, enlarge and move variaous structures on the property as well as reduce the minimum required lake setback by nearly 12 feet. Friends organization sought ways to support families whose lives and education had been disrupted. Although students eventually returned to school, organizers recognized that many children continued to experience academic, emotional and financial challenges. The project aims to encourage reading, build home libraries and connect
and encourage families who don’t visit libraries with various resources. “We wanted to do something a little extra this year to help these families,” said Melissa Nykanen, executive director of the Ramsey County Library Friends. “There’s research showing that having home librarSEE LIBRARY KITS, PAGE 2
liaison comments, neighbor comments and council deliberation, the matter took over two hours to resolve. City Senior Planner Izaak Peterson explained that the property owners wished to demolish the existing home and sheds, yet retain the detached garage and boathouse. They then wished to construct a new 5,170-square-foot home with a new garage and accessory building.
