Creating that ‘backyard oasis’

M

innesotans are better poised than most to appreciate the glory of summer. Especially when we’re able to enjoy it from the comfort of our own homes. A back yard is so much more than a green lawn. Local business Abrahamson Nurseries (page 10), interprets a backyard as an ‘outdoor living room’, where natural features and design elements can create the right atmosphere for entertaining, relaxing and enjoying the long summer evenings. Minnesotans’ willingness to spend an impressive amount of time, energy and money into making their backyards into comfortable at-home getaways is a testament to their importance in our lives. As Len Pratt of Pratt Homes says in our feature article on pages 6-9, every home outdoor space can be individualized to fit the preferences and needs of the family within. In summer, a backyard becomes an alternate home— an escape from the looming indoor walls, just a few steps away. In these pages, we hope you will find some ideas to create your own backyard oasis this summer.

“The new single family buyer isn’t really looking for a McMansion. The focus is on smaller homes, with larger, multipurpose spaces, where people can carry on conversations, not be separated by walls.” – Len Pratt

CREATING THAT ‘BACKYARD OASIS’ Call the experts

M

ore than ever, homebuyers are looking for a comfortable, relaxed environment in which to grow their families - a home that feels a lot like the one where they were raised. According to Len Pratt of Pratt Homes, there’s a marked uptick in millennial parents seeking a place to put down roots. And the housing industry is ready. “The new single family buyer isn’t really looking for a McMansion,” Pratt said. “The focus is on smaller homes, with larger, multipurpose spaces where people can carry on conversations, not be separated by walls.”

As a homebuilder, Pratt is seeing a lot of open floor plans where parents can make dinner within eyeshot of the kids . . . great rooms that are natural gathering spots . . . party-ready rec rooms on the lower level . . . and bonus rooms above the garage where the kids can hang out, play games and do homework. Porches and patios have become an important part of our living space think ‘backyard oasis.’ Outdoor cooking and grilling is a breeze when the deck or patio is connected to the kitchen by french doors or a nice broad sliding door. In today’s well-built home, floor plans

presspubs.com/savour 7

complement the design of the outdoor space so the rooms flow together logically. Muted outdoor lighting, strategic placement of easy-care plants hand-selected for the space, right-sized fire pits, comfy seating areas and landscaping designed to complement the view, not block it, are great ways to marry the out-of-doors with inside spaces. “People want to look out and see that outdoor area, not wonder where it is - it’s right there,” Pratt said. “We combine vegetation, strategic tree placement, maybe some landscaped terracing, so they can look out and see a pleasant backdrop without stretching their necks.” A good builder will work closely with a family on the details, right down to finding the best orientation for the home on the lot to get the most breathtaking views. In contrast to a more private backyard, homeowners want the front door to radiate hospitality with a big welcoming porch that invites neighbors to stop and chat - an architectural nod to America’s past. “Front porches aren’t just tokens, they’re there,” Pratt said. Empty nesters want open spaces too. That’s a fundamental change Pratt has seen over the last 10-20 years. “We used to have separate dining and living rooms that’s gone,” he said. Snowbirds who return to Minnesota for the summer are looking for that “staycation, holiday feel” - a house that’s in tune with their desire to entertain and have fun. Retirees who want to stick to one level may want design features such an on-grade deck and a maintenance-free yard, for example. Trails and parks are super important. People want to get from one place to the next without getting in the car. Young families and empty nesters alike want to get to know their neighbors. They want to know who else is making the decision to live here? Are they going to live the lifestyle that I’m anticipating? A dream home means a place to gather old friends and make new ones, to host slumber parties, to play catch . . . a home with a backyard oasis and a “y’all-come” front porch . . . in a community where it’s quiet enough on a summer evening to hear the nightsong of a whippoorwill or parent’s voice calling a child home to supper. The Pratt Homes team is ready to help you build that dream home - or remodel your existing home to fit your changing needs. Rates are down to nearly 4%, fueling a sense of urgency in the home market. Len Pratt encourages prospective buyers to gather ideas by visiting the Pratt Homes web site and signing up for an invitation to tour some of the homes that are on display each month. And don’t forget to check the fall Parade of Homes in September for homes from a builder of quality and integrity for almost 50 years - Pratt Homes.

Today’s backyard is a lot more than a sea of green. It’s an extension of a home’s living space - a family’s go-to spot for entertaining, enjoying nature’s beauty, celebrating milestones and recharging. The key to creating an outdoor oasis: keep it simple. Fire pits, seating walls, plants and wood screens are just a few of the ways to update any outdoor living area. Flat natural limestone pieces can provide extra seating. Terracing, gently curved paver or stepping-stone walkways, and well-chosen plants can complement patio spaces. Group weather-hearty furniture in an L or U shape to encourage conversation. . . throw on some easy-care pillows and cushions to create a homey feel. Small trees can form a “ceiling” overhead - what about some simple stringlighting? Low-maintenance shrubs can act as an informal wall to create a personal relaxation zone. The best way to ensure that “outdoor living room” remains a backyard oasis for years to come is to call in the pros. We asked the experts at Abrahamson Nurseries to analyze the trend and give us their top picks for easy-care landscaping. “Creating privacy in a small city lot is a challenge we enjoy,” said Andy Carlson, one of Abrahamson’s designers for over 10 years. “With limited space, plants with a small footprint are best. We recommend varieties that don’t get very wide and

10 SaVour

in some cases tolerate a fair amount of shade because of large trees and neighboring homes. Japanese upright yew or Holmstrup Arborvitae work well for shaded areas. Parkland Pillar Birch is a small tree that has a narrow habit and will grow well in a sunny location. “Wood structures add interest - a series of lattice fence panels with a colorful vine next to a patio can offer a less obtrusive screen. Some of the tall ornamental grasses work well as a soft informal screen,” he said. Carlson recommends low maintenance plants such as Miss Kim and Dwarf Korean Lilac, Compact American Viburnum, Minuet and Tango Weigela, Shining Sensation Weigela, Broadmoor Juniper, or traditional favorites: daylilies, hosta and dianthus. Some of the lesser known low maintenance plants are Little Limelight Hydrangea, Bobo Hydrangea, St. John’s Wort, PJM Rhododendron, Dwarf Globe Norway Spruce, Aralia, Foamy Bells

and Nepeta. The design process begins with a landscaper sitting down with a homeowner to discuss their priorities. Do they want privacy screening, a more inviting front yard, or a space to entertain family and friends? A site visit then helps determine the right plants and landscaping elements for the space. Serving the St. Croix Valley since 1928, Abrahamson Nurseries is a full service landscape and design company, garden center, and greenhouse grower. They offer a wide selection of landscape plants, hardscape materials, tools, and garden decor for the do-it-yourselfer, as well as courteous, professional crews with years of experience to design and install it for you. jewelry and gifts by local artists. Last year the partners totally remodeled the store’s interior, restoring its original tin ceilings and introducing new items. The name “The Hub” harkens back to 1887: it was the name of the first business to occupy the building. You may be familiar with The Hub in downtown White Bear Lake across from historic Railroad Park. But do you know the story behind the popular home accents and gift shop - how it grew out of a friendship between two women who shared a passion for unique vintage treasures? Sandy Matzdorf and May Swenson met when their daughters were in Brownie Scouts together more than 25 years ago. “We discovered we both had a passion for vintage items, refurbishing things, trying to bring out the beauty of a neglected item,” Matzdorf said. “It became our hobby.” They opened their consignment store “ReUse ReStyle” nearly ten years ago, transitioning to The Hub in 2017. Before going into business together, both women had 30+ year corporate careers, Matzdorf as an IBM executive and Swenson as a management executive focusing on small business startups and retail operations. At first they sold their own gently used goods and welcomed others to bring in items for resale. They did that for about eight years before changing their business model, Sandy explained. The Hub specializes in quality home decor like kitchen items and textiles, small furniture, seasonal goodies,

Owning the store together has deepened their friendship, Sandy said. Each year they take a road trip to hunt for unusual items. “That’s when we rethink, and plan, and ask each other, ‘what do you think, would this line work?’ And we share ideas with other small business owners. It’s kind of a fun ‘annual meeting.’” Their adult children work at the store and provide input. It’s a family affair. “You can’t carry only what you like. We both do a lot of trend shopping and reading,” Swenson remarked. “We really are part of the community. We know our customers. People are very loyal. We want to stay true to the history of White Bear Lake - we think that’s important.” Sandy also owns White Bear Lake Mercantile, where you’ll find “Unnecessary Necessities” - a little bit of everything, like an old time general store: gifts, soaps and lotions, seeds and sundries. The Mercantile also offers evening classes hosted by local artisans. In the words of Henry Ford: ”Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success.”

ou could say that Rustic Revival Barnwood founder Rhonda Engle is in the business of retrieving lost history: she loves helping people infuse a touch of lost Americana into their DIY projects using reclaimed barnwood. There’s something wistful and mysterious about the sight of a crumpling old barn. “Barns are coming to their end. Back in the day, there would be a barn every five acres of farmland. Now they’re being torn down left and right. Nothing is being put back in their place,” Engle said. Engle’s deep appreciation for weathered wood took hold early on. She grew up on a farm and was taught woodworking by her grandfather, whom she called a great craftsman. The business she started in 2016 has grown into a thriving store with a 6,000 square foot showroom filled with reclaimed lumber, beams, doors, windows and hardware. Engle calls it “the Home Depot of barnwood.” More than 20 suppliers bring in two to ten loads of wood every week, 80% rescued from farmlands in Minnesota or Wisconsin. The shop provides design and installation services for projects like accent walls, finishing and custom work, but most customers are Do-It-Yourselfers looking to spruce up their personal space. Sometimes, a little design help is all they need. “In today’s world, we’re all about not being wasteful and reusing products,” Engle said. “Appreciating history, too. Barnwood has all those dimensions. It’s a piece of history that has meaning, not just a plank of board. It’s got the age and the character and the beauty that takes 100 years to create - it cannot be reproduced.” In addition to boards and beams, the store carries just about everything that can be reclaimed from old barns - mantles, doors, corrugated tin and hardware, everything from coat hooks to sliding barn door tracks, door handles and hinges, both reclaimed and new. “We build a ton of custom doors,” Engle said. The team is happy to visit a site and tear down a structure or pick up lumber, she added. The store also has a great selection of unique, one-of-a-kind furniture, doors, signs, wall decor, barnwood-framed mirrors, serving trays and other gifts. And they can make custom monogramed signs, signs with state or team logo cutouts, or customordered items like cases for flags or collectibles. Check out the store’s Facebook page for upcoming DIY workshops, videos and photos of completed projects, as well as Rhonda’s incredible story of how she got started in the barnwood business. facebook.com/rusticrevivalbarnwood

PAINT YOUR

SUMMER SAFETY FOR PETS

Follow these tips to keep your pet protected in soaring summer temperatures: • Know the signs of heat exhaustion

Signs of heat exhaustion include heavy panting, vomiting, diarrhea, unsteady legs, bright red or blue gums and tongue, and excessive drooling. If your dog shows these symptoms, move to a cool spot and place cool, wet cloths on his or her neck, in armpits and between hind legs. Overheated dogs should be brought to a vet as soon as possible.

Local company Gray Duck Art hosts paint-by-number classes of your furry friend! They have public classes, private classes, and take home kits! Check out grayduckart.com for more details.

• Avoid hot sidewalks / pavement

Protect your pet’s paws by keeping walks to a minimum during the hottest hours of the day. Hot pavement can burn the sensitive pads of paws, and proximity to the hot ground will cause your pet’s body to heat up quickly.

• Never leave your pet in the car

Even with the windows open, your pet can suffer from fatal heatstroke within minutes if left in the car. On a 75 degree day, the temperature inside a parked car can climb to 100+ degrees in just 10 minutes.

• Some pets need sunscreen

Pets with fine hair and pink skin can suffer from sunburn, and should be protected with a sunscreen product formulated for animals.Talk to your vet about which type of sunscreen is best for your pets.

• Keep away edible hazards

Keep alcoholic beverages away from pets and be mindful of toxic lawn and garden insecticides that may be harmful to dogs and cats if ingested. If you suspect your pet has eaten a poisonous substance, call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 immediately.

pril showers bring May flowers... and rosé season! As the greenery returns and colorful flowers start to bloom, different shades of rosé start to also adorn our wine glasses. Rosé wines and outdoor entertaining go hand in hand this time of year. They come in a very wide array of pinkness and dryness and pair beautifully with the foods of spring and summer. The great thing about rosé is that it doesn’t require aging. Once bottled, the wine is ready to drink. When it is fresh and new, rosé is at its best. A good rule of thumb when exploring rosé wines is that old-world wine is less sweet and drier, and new world wine is a little sweeter or fruitier, particularly in this country. Some rosés, like White Zinfandel, are flavored with added sugars. So look for a rosé wine that is fresh, crisp and acidic, with no extra sugar that will bury the mineral content of the wine. If you are on the hunt for a classic, dry rosé, look for any wine produced in France, particularly in the

Tavel wine region or Loire Valley. You really can’t go wrong with a French rosé. Try my favorite rosé, the Cuvée Royale Tavel or for something a little bit lighter, the Mado en Provence Rosé. The Tavel will pair with a large variety of food, from smoked salmon to sushi to pizza and even rotisserie chicken! The Mado en Provence is a little bit more delicate and will shine when paired with crab salad, non-spicy Asian style salads, tomato salads and most white fish dishes. Avoid cream and butter-based sauces with both wines. Another fine choice is the Rendez-vous Rosé. This is an extremely elegant rosé made from the Grenache grape. It is full-flavored with raspberry and cherry on the nose, it is ample and fleshy in the mouth with red fruits and blackberry. Pair it with spicy grilled shrimp or a summer salad with strawberries and goat cheese and you will not regret it! If sparkling rosé is more your style, two newcomers to the Minnesota wine

scene are must-tries: the Bacio della Luna Rosé from Italy and the Henri de Villamont Cremant Rosé from Burgundy. The Bacio della Luna Rosé is produced from 100% Pinot Noir and is a perfect choice to serve as guests arrive to your backyard oasis or rooftop party. With a vibrant, fruity nose packed with red berry aromas and juicy red berry flavors, it is ideal for any special occasion. The Villamont Cremant Rosé is dry and packed with dark red fruit flavors. This is sure to become a new favorite with just one sip! Pair it with dessert to really make it shine! Cheers to warm summer days, entertaining in your backyard oasis, hosting friends on your new apartment's rooftop, delicious food and the perfect rosé wines to go along with both!

Cold climate grapes turn Wisconsin into wine countr y by Jackie Bussjaeger In the wake of a rough storm during a solo trip in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, Bill Bluhm suddenly found himself surrounded by a fearless swarm of dragonflies, dancing through the air around him. It was a mesmerizing, peaceful moment, and one that stuck with him. In 2010, he named his St. Croix Falls winery Dancing Dragonfly. In an extension of the theme, each variety of wine produced at Dancing Dragonfly is named for a different style of dance. Bluhm cultivated an appreciation for wine during his career as a consulting actuary. After he retired, he was looking for a new passion project when a friend told him about an innovative variety of cold-climate grape. Before he knew it, Bluhm and his wife Christine had purchased a 60-acre plot on the south side of Highway 8 in St. Croix Falls. Today, Dancing Dragonfly produces 10,000 cases of wine a year. Cold climate grapes are particularly good for dessert wines. These grapes tend to retain their acidity, which balances out the sweetness. As a result, they make for delectable fruit-forward wines. One of the most popular dessert wines at Dancing Dragonfly is the Lindy. The Lindy

has won double gold awards at the San Francisco International Wine Competition two years running. For every bottle of wine purchased, Dancing Dragonfly donates a dollar to charity. At the end of each year, wine club members and employees gather and vote on how to distribute the funds. However, two special wines go toward pre-designated charities that are near to the Bluhms’ hearts: Every bottle of Bill’s Waltz contributes toward the Ronald McDonald House Charities, and every bottle of Calypso goes toward the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Dancing Dragonfly has a community events calendar as well, offering live music, comedy shows, and Paint & Sip nights that have attracted quite a following. “People are building traditions around the winery. That’s the part I love,” Bluhm said. Dancing Dragonfly is available for weddings and for corporate and private events. The winery is located at 2013 120th Ave., St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin, just off Highway 8. Dancing Dragonfly can be reached by phone at (715) 483-9463 or found online at DDWinery.com.

Restoring the Body, Enlightening the Spirit By Shannon Riley The licorice root and peppermint Aveda tea is brewing and its aromatic warmth is matched by the sunny welcome guests receive at Jessie Tomme’ Salon and Spa. The full-service salon on Mahtomedi Avenue in downtown Mahtomedi uses only the pure organic product line for which Aveda is renowned. The essence of light florals and the woodsy charm of the salon rouse the spirit to commune with nature. Stylists and guests share a soft banter full of life events and news of babies and travel. Pampered clients snicker under tinfoil shingles or conditioning treatments that hasten a summersleek shimmer. A happy mantra of soft purrs come from the massage chairs and winter-worn hands are being revived with silky hot wax. Salon owner, Jessie Tomme’ smiles at the rapport her skilled stylists and estheticians share with their clients. “I’m happy we have such great team chemistry here. This is the energy I had always hoped for.” Many of her own clients have followed her for the twenty years of her practice. A White Bear native, Tomme’ has owned the salon for fifteen years. “I was pretty ambitious… working to expand the services and rebuild the client base. And, now, I actually own the building.” Tomme’ recalls the awesome undertaking and shares appreciative thoughts about her loving parents, Mike and Linda Tomme’, who still live in White Bear. Jessie Tomme trained over 20 years ago at Aveda and embraces Aveda’s overarching mission to deliver pure plant-based products that enhance the wellness of body and spirit. An environmentalist herself, Jessie also shares Aveda’s commitment to renewable energy and conservation. She installed solar panels on her building’s roof and is religious about recycling. “I’m trying hard to reduce our carbon footprint.”

Progressive in business and generous to her community, Tomme’ supports countless events in the White Bear and Mahtomedi area. She’s humble about it and shrugs a little, “I honestly believe in the adage that you get what you give.” Jessie Tomme Salon and Spa also offers indulgences to refresh your outlook in the upstairs spa of the cottage-like downtown salon. On the second floor loft, an aesthetician’s room and massage suite await. As you ascend the stairs the day’s anxiety wanes. The dim-lit spaces, with sensual sounds and scents, are serene. Two experienced aestheticians provide a mix of sumptuous facials with conditioning massage for décolleté and shoulders. Lori Caye specializes in facials and Erica Elaine offers waxing, lash enhancements and makeup artistry among her services. A knowing touch, which our bodies crave, comes from the skilled hands of masseuse, Christl Joy. Understanding chronic pain personally, Christl embraces the power of the healing arts and the deeply moving effects of release. “Positive kinetic connections can be life enhancing. You can feel the body start to heal when tension abates. The techniques I use source the tension in the body. I listen to its messages to resolve the pain.” With sixteen years of experience and medical massage training, Christl Joy applies a combination of myofascial release, craniosacral therapy and visceral manipulation. Because of the Spirit of Service from Jessie Tomme’s Salon and Spa, a steady stream of clients emerge having rediscovered their winsome stylish selves. Jessie has fulfilled her Aveda-inspired mission to renew the soul, restore the vessel and honor and elevate the person in the mirror. Here, she serves her friends and the neighborhood she calls home.

M

T ruman Company top-rated coin and precious metal exchange

ore than 40 years in business has given The Truman Company owner Roger Westerling a clear idea of what customers want in a coin and precious metals dealer. Most of all, he says, it’s to be treated fairly. “I believe in the repeat customer. If you treat everyone fairly they will come back,” Westerling said. “Doing business in the right and honest way is important. Most of our business is repeat customers. I want to make everyone’s experience pleasant and as stress-free as possible.” The Truman Company buys gold and silver bullion, old gold and silver jewelry, scrap gold, and other collectables. Their specialty is the coin business. Licensed by the State of Minnesota as a Bullion Coin Dealer, the company is one of the leading rare coin and precious metals dealers in the Twin Cities, often beating the prices of low-cost internet companies. Personalized service and competitive pricing are the hallmarks of The Truman Company. Taking care of customers and giving them a fair price are values handed down from Westerling’s Uncle Truman, who taught him about the metals and coins business as a young man. After obtaining his business degree, Westerling spent many years working with some of the finest and most prominent dealers in the business before establishing The Truman Company in 2010. Customers may be local, regional or national. Westerling prefers the local business because he loves interacting with customers. Often, he says, people come in wanting to buy something tangible thinking that the price will go up. Sometimes a customer will inherit an item or a whole estate, with no clue

Aidan and Roger buying another coin deal with the help of Sonny, the shop dog. what they have. Westerling and his team go into the home and make a list of every item, with their offer price.

Some of their more unusual ‘finds?’

“Coins that people have no idea are rare until we tell them. One case comes to mind - they thought they inherited a box of old coins from grandpa. It was able to pay off their student loans.” - Roger Westerling Owner, Truman Company

The biggest mistake people make, Westerling said, is to clean an item. ‘Do Not Clean,’ he emphasized. “It totally destroys the collector value of any coin. Just box them up and bring them to us. We’re happy to sort and itemize and we can do it much faster.” Westerling and his store manager, Aidan Kelly, both love to be in the shop every day, “not knowing what will walk in the door next.” And of course, Sonny the labrador retriever, is in the shop every day to greet visitors. The Truman Company is open weekdays until 6pm, and Saturdays 10am - 2pm, or by appointment. Visit The Truman Company at 2585 Hamline Avenue North, Suite E, Roseville, MN, call 651-582-3865 or visit www.trumanrc.com.
