ummer in Minnesota always includes the lake, the river or the pool. That’s because, as any trivia fanatic will be eager to tell you, Minnesota has over 183,000 miles of natural shoreline— more than California, Texas and Florida Logan Gion combined.

Therefore, this issue of SaVour is dedicated to waterside activities.

While gathering interviews for these stories, I must’ve heard the words “accommodate” and “adapt” at least a dozen times apiece. Each of the people and businesses featured has learned from the water they abut. Water changes course when it hits an obstacle. It can be healing or forceful depending on the need. It’s in every human being and every human being needs it to survive.

While I treasure each person and place I interview for SaVour, the people at the White Bear

Lake VFW especially impacted me. They’re ready-and-willing to help their neighbors and community, and they switch from classy to comfy at a moment’s notice so that everyone feels welcome. I’m proud to be an American: The VFW reminded me why.

America is now 250 years old, and water is the reason our country exists. The Boston Tea Party, George Washington crossing the Delaware, the Hudson River march to Yorktown—these moments decided our course and secured us our freedom.

I have no doubt America will endure for another 250 years because it will continue to accommodate and adapt to the needs of its people.

Forged Guides’ rock climbing tours help everyone level up

o matter the age or experience level, rock climbing is more achievable and more local than one might think.

“I have a ton of friends that climb all day, every day, and they can’t do a pull-up,” assured Mason Henke, Founder of Forged Guides. “It feels like you need that physicality, but you really don’t.” To ensure a successful

climb, Henke believes that the technique one uses and the route one picks are the most important decisions when considering a person’s climbing style, experience level or body shape—hence the need for a rock-climbing tour guide.

Since its beginning, Forged Guides has aimed to meet clients where they’re at. While most of the company’s tours take place in Interstate State Park in Taylor’s Falls, staff has

taken groups throughout much of the St. Croix Valley, as far south as Stillwater. They regularly conduct full-day women’s climbing classes with climbing influencer Madeline Marquardt. They have also hosted a wide age range of climbers, from 3 to nearly 80 years old.

Henke explained that Forged Guides can reach such a wide population because of how they start their tours. “We meet you. We get you geared up. We chat with you a little. ‘What are your hopes, dreams, aspirations for the day?’”

he explained. “We usually start on some easier routes, talking through tips and tricks on how to climb efficiently, to not overexert yourself.”

Guides also stay flexible with participants during a climb. “I've had 3-year-olds get halfway up a climb and scream and cry,” Henke recalled. “We'll physically attach ourselves to them and bring them down with us. And often, they’re pretty psyched after that

Rock climbing tip: When figuring out your next move, hang with straight arms, not bent elbows. This puts your body weight into your shoulders, biceps and back, rather than just your forearms.

experience and maybe we'll give it another try.” Henke added that some adults feel timid with heights or uncomfortable leaning back in a climbing rope. If that’s the case, the guide will have the participant practice a full-gear climb on eightfoot-high rocks first.

Forged Guides considers each of its clients holistically because rock climbing can test more than just a person’s physical limits.

Henke explained that climbing has four aspects: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. To execute a climb, a person needs to be not only physically able to do the moves, but they also need to able to puzzle a way to the top. Once face-to-rock-face with a challenging portion, the climber’s brain needs to overcome any psychic blocks that could prevent them from following through. Finally, Henke believes that engaging all of these aspects of one’s being while out in nature evokes a metaphysical response.

“It truly allows you … to fully be in that moment, and you’re not thinking about anything else,” Henke said.

The want to spread and share that experience is why Henke believes rock climbers, especially the ones at Forged Guides, have such a friendly reputation. “As climbers, we get questions all the time,” Henke stated.

“Ninety-five percent of climbers are super friendly, super eager to help a beginner out. It’s one of the best communities I’ve ever been a part of, and I feel incredibly lucky to be a part of it.”

• 16 oz. Kowalski’s Fresh Strawberry Cocktail Mixer • 8 oz. light rum • 1-2 cups crushed ice, to taste • fresh strawberries and lime wedges, for garnish (optional)

Wargo Nature Center gathers the latest in foraging

ooking for natural ingredients to add to a dish this summer and fall? Your solution may be as close as Lino Lakes.

Nestled behind Main Street, just past Centerville, is Wargo Nature Center, home for the programming unit for the parks department of Anoka County. Wargo Nature Center is also part of Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Regional Park Reserve.

“It feels surprisingly wild, considering how close we are to the metro,” commented Program Services Supervisor Eric Vehe. “We can see Highway 35W from down by the lake, but beyond that, we’re pretty tucked in here.”

Indeed, as one walks up to the center’s entrance, they’ll smell mild, almond-or-cherry-like aromas from red maple trees and a sweet meadow fragrance from the daisy fleabane—instant reminders of summer camps or softball tournaments. Deeper in the park, however, CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

are acres of wetlands, which Vehe described as the perfect environment for wild berry bushes and mushrooms to grow.

Until recently, these foraging options were off limits to human visitors at the park, but Vehe stated that the county ordinance changed in 2024.

“Basically, as long as you are here gathering for yourself, not otherwise causing any major disturbances to the sites, you’re allowed to gather,” Vehe explained. “What is unlawful to do is harvest edible fruits, plants, mushrooms for commercial use.”

Vehe noted that foraging is how many visitors connect to the local landscape, learn about the local plants and appreciate the local flavors.

For those new to foraging, Vehe said the first step is reading literature about poisonous local plants, like “Mushrooms of the Upper Midwest” by Teresa Marrone and Kathy Yerich. “It’s arguably more important to know what will kill you rather than what will taste good,” Vehe chuckled. Going with a knowledgeable guide—either a professional or a trusted friend—is also essential. For protecting oneself, Vehe mentioned that one can generally follow three rules in Minnesota: Avoid egg-shaped mushrooms—whether on the ground or a stalk—cook any wild mushrooms before consuming and avoid any roadside forageable.

“The main concern there is things leaking from vehicles and road salt,” Vehe said. “Those things, in theory, could

accumulate in the plant … pesticides, gasoline, things like that. Try to pick from somewhere a little more pristine.”

Vehe added that the same rule applies to a person’s backyard. A lawn that is manicured using extensive pesticides or chemical treatment is not one from which someone should be foraging.

Once budding foragers become knowledgeable about safety, Vehe recommended picking wild berries, especially ones that a person would recognize from the grocery store, like raspberries or blackberries. While Vehe said foragers will probably be fine eating these berries straight from the plant, common-sense measures like rinsing the fruit with water is preferable. Dandelions, wild clover and evergreen needles are also easy to identify and make great additions to many dishes.

From there, foraging blooms in a myriad of directions, encompassing tree tapping and root harvesting among others. For starter guides, Vehe stated that any guide by author Sam Thayer is trustworthy, as are programs put on by one’s local county or state park department.

Vehe concluded that Wargo Nature Center is a great place to start one’s foraging journey. Why? “Last year, at the State Fair, our maple syrup won the blue ribbon,” Vehe smiled.

White Bear Lake VFW serves everyone, not just service members

T

he Veterans of Foreign Wars has over 5,500 posts worldwide and provides a network to help veterans and their families.

They also aim to increase camaraderie and understanding between service members of different overseas conflict. To facilitate that latter goal, many VFW posts, like post 1782 in White Bear Lake, run a full-service bar and grill.

What many Americans may not realize, though, is that anyone, not just veterans, can dine at a VFW. “A lot of people are surprised,” said Club Manager Sheila Parato, “They’re like, ‘I didn’t realize I could come in here.’ The food’s spectacular, the view’s spectacular and we have decent-priced drinks.”

While excellent views come part and parcel with many lakeside restaurants, the kitchen staff, led by Mike Hardwick, ensure Parato is telling the truth about the food quality.

“We want to be a step above a normal bistro,” stated Assistant Kitchen Manager Israel Anderson. “We have the feel of a bar, but we don’t want that to make our food or the small things slack.”

Anderson’s statement is, perhaps, modest.

Some people are here for an anniversary dinner, and some are just here for an after-dinner drink,” Parato said. “We accept everybody for who they are because when they come in here, they’re supporting veterans and their community.”

Sunrise Yoga takes tension out of learning

I

n yoga, a sun salutation is a series of 12 poses, linked by breathing. Attendees of Sunrise Yoga—held at 6:15 a.m.

Wednesdays now through early August at Central Park in Roseville—will be able to literally salute the sun.

“It’s a regular yoga class on mats, but it’s taught in the beauty of the Muriel Sahlin Arboretum,” Instructor Cathy Skrip informed. “So every day, you walk in past the fountain, something new is blooming from the week before.”

Skrip understands that getting to a yoga class at sunrise is a stretch for some, so she makes an effort to remove all other blocks once a student arrives. “Anybody—any body—can do yoga,” she stated, “regardless of your physicality, your body shape, your experience level. It’s for all adult ages.”

Skrip also demonstrates each move while giving instructions, so even participants unfamiliar with Sunrise yoga yoga terms can follow along. Skrip recommends Instructor Cathy that attendees bring a yoga mat, a water bottle Skrip and, if the weather is cool, a blanket.

Sunrise Yoga’s accessibility, Skrip believes, comes from a slower flow between poses. “There’s more benefits to thinking about how you embody a pose. How I embody a pose might be something different,” Skrip described. “I’m not going to say, ‘Your body has to be perfectly straight to do a valid triangle pose.’ What if you’ve had rotator-cuff surgery or you’re just tight?”

Helping her students recover strength, ease tension and release worries are major priorities for Skrip, a now-retired therapist who specialized in trauma for multiple decades. “When I did my yoga teacher training, my goal was to find a way to use yoga for emotional release as well as flexibility and balance,” Skrip recalled. “The more you can clear your mind, the more you’re going to be able to do.”

Skrip remarked that the mind-body connection one does during yoga is powerful. “I’m always careful to say yoga is not religious, but it might be spiritual,” Skrip said. “You’re seeing the sun rise … you’re in the natural air, your eyes are taking in the natural light.” She also stated that Sunrise Yoga is ideal for working people as a mood booster to start off the day.

“You can still get to work by 8 a.m. It’s at the start of your day, and you can come away with a sense of gratitude.”

Gratitude is a core benefit of Sunrise Yoga. “When you're in that type of beautiful outdoor space, it’s hard not to feel grateful that you’re there.

And then that carries into the rest of your day,” Skrip detailed. “And yes, we’ve all got issues, but there’s so much to be grateful for. And that really shapes your life.”

Looking to do yoga closer to home or at a different time?

Skrip recommends keeping the following in mind before joining a new class: • Know your own health status. If you have medical conditions, ask your physician if doing yoga would be okay.

• Every teacher has their own style. You want a teacher who will explain things and talk you into poses.

• If you’ve never done yoga before, start with an in-person class where a teacher can adjust you. You want to be able to ask questions if something doesn’t feel good.

• Your body is your best teacher. You want an instructor who is receptive to your needs. If they are doing something five times, but you can only do it once or three times, that is okay.

Shoreview Farmers Market produces community

W

hat makes Shoreview Farmers Market different from others in the area? They target working parents.

Held on Tuesday afternoons from 3-7 p.m., June through August, and 3-6 p.m. in September and October, at the Shoreview Community Center, the Shoreview Farmers Market serves people who cannot make a morning market.

“We’re catching those people who might have a busy weekend

…” explained Stephanie Schutta, Recreation Program Supervisor for the city of Shoreview, “but can run quickly as they’re heading home and can grab something for dinner that night or can grab their fresh fruits and vegetables for the week.” Schutta also mentioned that the market has different activities for children every week, from scavenger hunts to art projects.

The city of Shoreview also keeps their farmers market on the smaller side so that those in a rush can navigate the vendor

booths and compare prices easily. Though many vendors sell their offerings weekly, Shoreview Farmers Market also has onetime vendor space set aside so that weekly offerings stay fresh.

Shoppers are welcome to visit the information booth to ask questions as well as pick up a frequent-shopper rewards card.

The information booth can also direct patrons to more than just produce. Farmers markets have recently expanded in their types of offerings, adding artisan items and homemade crafts to their

vendors lists. Shoreview Farmers Market has partially embraced this trend, featuring numerous micro bakeries and urban greenhouse farmers. While the market has some craft vendors, Schutta commented that Shoreview’s parks department employ controls to keep local food vendors as the priority.

Schutta feels that holding the market at the Shoreview Community Center is appropriate, since the event fosters a sense of community.

customers who, every week, buy from them,” Schutta said.

“Sometimes [customers] will travel. If they couldn’t make a certain market that the vendor’s at, they’ll come to our market too.”

This setup encourages families to shop local. “One apple from the grocery store goes through 20 hands before it gets to the person buying it,” Schutta stated.

“Knowing where your food is coming from is nice. It’s never going to be this big, amorphous machine.

It’s going to be a real person.”

Blackberry Version: Sub Lyre’s White Rum Alternative for dark rum.

Sub cane sugar for brown sugar. Add 30 blackberries to mortar and pestle mixture.

• 1 cup of Lyre’s White Rum Alternative • 2 limes • 4 sprigs of mint • 1/3 cup of cane sugar • 2 cups of tonic water light • 10 drops of angostura bitters • 1 tray of ice cubes

1. Pluck mint leaves from sprigs 2. Wedge 2 limes into eighths 3. Add the following to mortar and pestle: - 12 lime wedges - All mint leaves - 1/3 cup of sugar 4. Moderately muddle with pestle.

Crunch and press, rather than shred.

5. Pour mortar mixture into pitcher Add remaining ingredients and stir gently as fizz allows until ice seasons/ begins to melt.

6. To serve, pour into lowball tumbler glasses and garnish with remaining lime wedges.
