The physical act of skimming across the water in a boat is a guaranteed way to put a smile on the face of almost anyone. In this issue we showcase a modern version of the classic pontoon boat. With its roominess, stability, ease of operation, and fun factor, the pontoon could easily be considered the goodwill ambassador of boating. Our cover story features Nelson Marine, a family business with a long history in the area that specializes in fishing boats and pontoons. Wishing you a safe and enjoyable boating season. 70 years of fishing and family fun at

In a place like White Bear Lake, there’s nowhere better to be than on the water.

any people have turned to outdoor activities during the coronavirus pandemic, driving an interest in outdoor sports such as fishing and boating much higher than an ordinary year. The northeast metro is replete with excellent lakes for fishing, and few businesses are better equipped to cater to anglers and boaters than Nelson Marine in White Bear Lake. Chris Kapisak is the current owner of the business, which has 70 years of history in the area. The business was founded in 1933 by Arvid Nelson, a master mechanic who could figure out just about any technological problem, fixing everything from cars to washing machines. His interest in mechanics brought him to selling and repairing snowmobiles and outboard motors. The business started on Payne Avenue in St. Paul, but moved to White Bear Lake in 1980, where it serves a large community

of boaters and anglers who like to visit the area’s many lakes. When Kapisak first started working at the company, it marketed snowmobiles during the cold months, and shifted to boats when the snow season ended. Kapisak bought the business from Gary Nelson, his father-in-law, in 1999. Today, Nelson Marine specializes in fishing boats and pontoons. The business carries a full line of Lund and Crestliner fishing boats, as well as South Bay pontoons. Pontoons in particular have been very popular during the era of social distancing, because they offer a spacious and comfortable environment for the whole family to enjoy together. Nelson Marine is family owned and operated. As a one-store dealer with a friendly and skilled staff, it offers excellent service and personal attention to customers. Nelson Marine is an authorized service center for Mercury, Evinrude, Yamaha and Honda outboard motors, and carries a full line of parts for

all of these brands. Three certified technicians carry on the legacy started by Arvid Nelson—anything can be fixed given enough time and attention. A new boat can be an escape from the indoors and the isolation of COVID-19, as well as a way to spend time with friends and family enjoying Minnesota’s richest natural resource. While Lund and Crestliner have already sold out of their current year models, Nelson Marine has an inventory of both these models still in stock. Kapisak encourages anyone to stop by the Nelson Marine showroom, visit with knowledgeable staff members, and figure out which boat works best for you.

A LOCAL CARE ALTERNATIVE

by Jackie Bussjaeger

L

ong before COVID-19 struck the U.S. and filled emergency rooms with coronavirus patients, doctors knew that most of the people waiting for care didn’t need to be admitted to the hospital. That’s why a group of emergency room physicians founded The Urgency Room in the Twin Cities metro more than 10 years ago. The Urgency Room is an independent, walkin clinic specifically designed to help people with serious health concerns who don’t need the very highest level of care. It can be confusing and scary when you’re confronted with a medical situation in which you think you might need to go to the hospital. If you’re facing this decision for yourself or a loved one, consider whether you feel like you need an ambulance. If not, it’s likely something you can be seen for at one of the The Urgency Room locations in Eagan, Vadnais Heights or Woodbury. And if you need more care than they provide, the staff can get you directly admitted to any local hospital so you can bypass the hospital ER. Since The Urgency Room is run by board-certified emergency physicians and staff trained in emergency medicine, the clinic offers a much wider variety of services than most urgent care facilities. Patients often find that a visit to The Urgency Room can cost around 30% less than a trip to their local hospital ER and offers shorter wait times. To find

out how long the wait is for an inperson visit, you can head to their website at UrgencyRoom.com. If you don’t want an in-person visit, The Urgency Room also provides telehealth. In recent months, the Urgency Room added rapid COVID-19 testing to their list of services and began a telemedicine program so patients can have a virtual visit with a clinician. The Urgency Room has recently expanded this service to medical consultations beyond COVID-19. Broken bones, recurring pains, kidney stones, influenza, ear infections and all sorts of everyday illnesses are seen with regularity at The Urgency Room. The state-of-the-art facilities give their healthcare clinicians the ability to get fast results for patients who need tests including ultrasounds, X-rays or CT scans. And because the team of boardcertified ER physicians at The Urgency Room also staff the ERs of several local hospitals, they keep up on all the latest medical advancements. The Urgency Room aims to be as accessible as possible, open for extended hours—8 a.m.10 p.m.—seven days a week. It accepts all active insurance plans. This model of healthcare— combining the skills of ER-trained doctors and staff with a wider array of technological resources than the average clinic—is helping keep the Twin Cities community healthy, happy, and out of the emergency room.

APOLLO HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING

Reliable, top-quality, community-minded

A

t a time when indoor air quality is more important than ever, Apollo Heating & Air Conditioning’s 40 years of experience is no small matter. The company was founded in 1980 by Joe Mattren and is now owned by his son Eric Mattren. “Studies show that the air within a home is a lot dirtier than the air you breathe outside, so filtration is important,” Eric Mattren said. “There are several different products that can help that that we offer, starting with basic filters on your furnace, moving air through your whole entire house.” Indoor air quality products have increased sharply throughout the industry during the pandemic, as people take action to make sure the air in their homes is safe and healthy. A few filters on the market, such as the iWave-R Air Purifier, have been proven to kill harmful pathogens in the air. Mattren also recommends UV bulbs to help kill mold and other spores inside indoor spaces. Air exchangers, which pull in fresh air from outside the home while expelling stale air outdoors, have been another popular option. Many older homes were built without this type of system, but Apollo Heating can add an air exchanger to

by Jackie Bussjaeger almost any existing home. Apollo Heating seeks to work with customers to fit their budget. Oftentimes air quality can be improved just by updating your home furnace system. Older models last a long time, but they also use a lot of energy and can become a financial drain. The motors on newer furnaces are much more efficient, running more frequently with less energy cost. “Just like cars are getting more complicated and computerized, the techs are also trained to become more savvy at it too,” Mattren said. Heating and cooling systems can now be linked to your phone and controlled at the push of a button. At a time when education in the skilled trades is diminishing, Apollo prides itself on a team of talented staff who bring years of experience to every new challenge. “People like it here, it’s a family environment,” Mattren said. “I am proud of our team and their dedication, and they really do enjoy coming to work.” This hard work has been recognized many times: every year, Apollo Heating receives an Xcel Energy Efficiency Partner Award. Recently, the business received a Lennox Partner of the Year Award, given to

only one company per five-state region. The award recognizes Apollo’s commitment to growth and excellent customer service. Apollo has always cared deeply about its community. For the last 10 years, the business has made a tradition of holding The Great Furnace Giveaway on Channel 5 Twin Cities Live. Deserving families and people in need get the surprise of a lifetime on live TV when they receive a new furnace system from Apollo Heating & Air Conditioning. The business holds three giveaways every year, totaling more than $165,000 in furnaces so far. Between its commitment to ensuring customers get top-notch service, its long history in the community, and the friendliness and skill of its staff, Apollo Heating & Air Conditioning takes pride in the professional services it provides to more than 100 communities throughout the Twin Cities and western Wisconsin.
