Live Longer With A Healthy Mouth. Inflammation, Your Mouth and Your Life. Your dental health is no longer just about cavities, gingivitis, periodontal disease, and your smile. Your dental health now is about how long you might live. Your dental health may add or subtract 10 years from your life. The Dawson Academy, one of the most prestigious advanced learning centers for dentistry, in cooperation with the Cleveland Clinic, recently established a top 5 list of things to maintain systemic health and live a longer life. The list includes exercising daily, avoiding tobacco use, managing stress in your life, eating healthy with an emphasis on less refined sugars and less processed foods, and lastly, maintaining healthy oral tissues with no inflammation. Inflammation is the root cause of many of the chronic diseases of aging. Your mouth is a significant source of inflammation if you have gingivitis or periodontal disease. You can have these problems and not even know it. If left untreated, inflammation in your mouth can lead to other serious health problems. Systemic consequences of dental inflammation include cardiovascular disease, which can cause death, diabetes, strokes, Alzheimer’s disease, pre-term newborns, cancer, obesity, osteoporosis, bowel issues, and problems around surgery sites such as artificial joints and implants. Gum inflammation occurs when microscopic bacteria, in the form of a biofilm, collect below the gumline. Left unchecked, this biofilm causes gingival inflammation. This biofilm must be removed with a two pronged approach. First, patients should have meticulous oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing, and whatever other adjuncts are necessary to remove the biofilm and eliminate inflammation. If you have bleeding while cleaning your teeth, there is inflammation present. Sometimes this is detectable, but more often it is not, without the help of a dental professional. Next, a dental professional is needed to examine you regularly, so that oral inflammation is kept to a minimum over your life span. Your dental visit should not be thought of as just getting your teeth cleaned. Rather, it should be an assessment, treatment, education, and training on keeping your oral inflammation to a minimum. While everyone has bacteria in their mouth, not everyone develops gingival inflammation. There are identifiable risk factors that make some people more susceptible to gingival inflammation. These risk factors include tobacco use, being overweight, diabetes, pregnancy, sleep apnea, cardiovascular disease, and arthritis. Post-menopausal females and immunocompromised patients are also at higher risk for gingival inflammation. If you have inflammation risk factors, it is even more important for you to partner with your dentist and dental hygienist on a regular basis to determine if any gum inflammation has developed, and then do what is necessary to eliminate it.

Spring is a great time to refresh all aspects of your life and this magazine! I welcome your emails, calls, comments and stories always. 2018 is the Chinese Year of the Dog and we would like to pay tribute to this species who gives us demonstrative, unconditional love while not recognizing our shortcomings. Pets Corner provides valuable local resources for pet care and ways to give back to this most unusual animal. Another, perhaps unique species, is the female. I chuckle to myself, because our language still remains foreign to our beloved counterparts. Please give these feisty females fine acknowledgment within this issues, ‘A Woman’s Place.’ You’ll find an eclectic mix of talent, ability and tenacity right next door to us.

Implement that dream, grow, evolve and become your true self. With Gratitude & Love,

Spring is the perfect time to start turning those dreams into reality and although shopping for a waterfront home or cabin in the woods is exciting, it’s important to know what you’re looking for. Daniel Churchill, real estate professional with Keller Williams Premier Realty can help guide you through the process and ensure that you get the home that suits your needs at the best price.

When it comes to waterfront and cabin living, Dan has the background and experience to successfully guide clients through the entire real estate process. The team at Keller Williams Premier Realty North Suburban lists and sells approximately twice the amount of properties than the other major real estate companies in the area. Whether you’re looking to sell or purchase any type of home, you’ll have the advantage with Dan at your side.

With over 20 years of experience assisting clients with purchasing and selling waterfront property, and a long-time waterfront property owner himself, Dan has the knowledge and understanding that gives his clients the advantage. He will take the time to make sure that all his clients feel confident in their final decision. Here are some of Dan’s insider tips for what to look for when purchasing a waterfront property:

- Choose the right body of water for your needs and interest. - Look into the insurance requirements for the property. - Research the shoreline’s history and future development. - Always keep in mind your purpose of the property: primary residence, vacation home or vacation home rental? - Ask about possible hidden costs that come with the property. Are you thinking of upgrading, downsizing, renting, or need to sell your waterfront or woods home? Let your first step be contacting Dan to get you started off on the right foot. Before listing your home on the market, Dan will carefully help his clients go over everything they need to do to prepare the home and get top dollar for their home. Here are some important things to consider when selling a waterfront property:

- Home owners need to understand who the particular buyer will be. - Look at the market to ensure that the property is priced correctly. - Stage the home to take full advantage of the home’s waterfront views—clean windows! - Keep in mind safety and accessibility when it comes to any needed dock repairs. - Consider doing a home inspection prior to listing the property for sale.

The common tern (Sterna hirundo) is classified as threatened. Minnesota’s Nongame Wildlife Program emphasis includes monitoring nest productivity, nest protection measures, and habitat improvement. In l999 there were only three pairs of plovers found in the state. Currently there are five nesting colony sites for the common tern and a statewide population of fewer than 900 nesting pairs. Currently, there are two common tern nesting sites in Lake of the Woods County, one on Pine/Curry Island and the other on the Northwest Angle Islands.

Whatever it takes

Make a difference in the life of an animal Foster • Volunteer • Adopt • Donate In 2010, Azure Davis was a 23-year-old studying business at a local university when she saw a dog named Hope living in a shelter in Ohio. Hope, a pit bull mix, was heartworm positive, extremely emaciated, and nearly out of time. Knowing she needed to act quickly, Azure arranged air and ground transportation to get Hope to Minnesota, determined to save her life. This adventure gave Azure the push she needed to found Ruff Start Rescue, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal welfare organization based out of Princeton, MN. Ruff Start Rescue is dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk animals with a focus in helping the local community first and foremost. The rescue also acquires animals from shelters in Texas, Louisiana,

and Oklahoma, where euthanasia rates are high. The rescue has saved more than 7,200 animals since its inception in 2010 and strives to increase the number of lives it impacts each year. The rescue is foster-based, meaning animals are housed in volunteer foster homes until they find their forever families. To date, Ruff Start has approximately 300 active foster families to help take care of animals looking for homes as well as an additional 300 volunteers who assist in other aspects of the rescue. As of early 2018, the rescue is currently caring for 295 cats, dogs, and small critters who are awaiting homes. Bathing is something that dogs need much more than cats. Most of the time, bathing is something that can be done at home. Mild, soap-free shampoo is ideal and we have a few favorites in the office. Pets with skin conditions might need medicated shampoo, so let our doctors and technicians help guide you in those cases. Nail trims are needed about once a month for cats, maybe a little less often if they go outside or are good about using a scratching post. Dogs can really vary – if your dog walks on pavement a lot, the nails might be kept short naturally. For most dogs, trimming every 1 to 2 months is adequate. If the nails get really long, it might take several sessions a few weeks apart to get the “quick” (blood vessel that nourishes the nail) to retreat back and let the nails be trimmed without painful “quicking”. Anal glands Pets have a gland on either side of their anus. It’s the “scent gland” and one of the reasons dogs smell each other’s back end. When a client asks for a demonstration of anal gland expression to maintain on their own, about 99% of the time they quickly decide that the anal gland expression fee is worth not having to do that particular task at home. Ear care Different ear styles can have their own troubles. Ear infections are common and very painful for dogs & cats, just as in people. Yeast & bacteria find warm, moist ears to be a perfect home. When they take over, the consequences mean more than just a smelly dog. They cause:

- pain & inflammation - raw, infected ear canals - ruptured eardrums or an ear hematoma

Pet Care 101 Caring properly for your pet takes some maintenance to keep your pet healthy, comfortable and looking good! Some things are best done by your veterinarian, others can be done at home or with a technician’s help in the office. Here are a few things to consider this spring to help your pet stay at its best. Professional Dental Cleanings While it is important to keep your pet’s teeth and gums healthy between visits, sometimes a professional dental cleaning is essential to ensure a healthy mouth. We’ll review the doctor’s recommendations with you, and guide you toward the next steps.

- a trauma to the ear flap where the ear flap fills with blood. (If this happens surgery and weeks of treatment are often required). Note If your dog or cat has ears with a bad odor, or if they have a head tilt or are holding an ear flap down, call us for an appointment. Never use ear cleaner or OTC ear product before checking with your veterinarian. Many can cause damage. As part of your pet’s routine check –up, the doctor will examine your pet’s ears and let you know if there is any concern. Please call us for all your pet care questions and we will help you find the answer! At Lake Animal Hospital, offering veterinary care means helping pet owners learn how to care for their pets. We appreciate your trust in our doctors & staff. Everyone wins when pets are healthy!

PETS CORNER

Safety 1st Before you embark on seasonal chores or outdoor activities, take note of some potential springtime hazards for your furry friends. Keep Easter candy and lilies in check. Chocolate is toxic to cats and dogs, true lilies can be fatal if ingested by cats. Be mindful, cats love to nibble on colorful plastic grass, which can lead to an obstructed digestive tract, severe vomiting and dehydration. If your pet ingests something they shouldn’t, please contact us.

While live bunnies, chicks and other festive animals are adorable, please resist the urge to purchase them – these cute babies grow up very fast and often require specialized care for life! Spring cleaning is a time-honored tradition in many households. Please keep all cleaners and chemicals out of your pet’s way! Almost all cleaning products, even natural ones, contain chemicals that may be harmful to pets. The key to using them safely is to read and follow label directions for proper use and storage. Open the windows while cleaning to air out the chemicals, or secure your dog outside while you clean and allow the chemicals to air out before bringing your pet back inside. While windows are open, be mindful of cats, who can jump or fall through unscreened windows. By cracking the window with a sturdy screen, a breeze can still be enjoyed. Paints, mineral spirits and solvent can be toxic to your pet and cause severe irritation or chemical burns. Carefully read all labels to see if the product is safe to use around your pets. Nails, staples, insulation, blades and power tools can be hazardous. Confine your dog or cat to a designated pet-friendly room during home improvement projects. Fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides keep our plants and lawns healthy and green, but are dangerous if your pet ingests them. Make sure your pet is indoors, or away from the lawn or garden while completing outdoor chores and heed the recommended waiting period before allowing your pet back on the lawn. Always store these products safely. Many popular springtime plants – including rhododendron and azaleas, are highly toxic to pets and can prove fatal if eaten. Be cautious of buzzing insects. If your cat or dog gets stung, call your veterinarian. Like humans, animals’ allergic reactions differ in severity. Act fast to avoid further complications, like anaphylactic shock. Look for swelling, redness, or difficulty breathing. Like us, pets can also be allergic to foods, dust, plants and pollens. Allergic reactions in dogs and cats can cause itching, minor sniffling and sneezing. Munching on grass is completely normal in moderation. If your dog makes this a habit please bring your pet into the clinic as it may be a sign of an upset stomach.

Make sure your pet is on a monthly, year-round heartworm preventative, like Heartgard, as well as a flea and tick control program like Nexgard or Frontline. Follow these steps to ensure quick and painless tick removal:

- Wearing gloves and using a pair of tweezers, grab the tick as close to your pet’s skin as you can. - Pull straight up in a swift movement, making sure not to grip too hard. - Place the tick in a screw top jar containing rubbing alcohol. Screw on the lid.

- Disinfect the bite site on your pet with anti-bacterial soap. Wash your hands thoroughly, and disinfect all tools that came in contact with the tick. - Monitor the bite site. If it is still inflamed after a week, schedule an appointment with us. Spend quality, outdoor time with your pet and make sure your pet’s collar is up-to-date with current ID tags that include your name, phone number and address. Also, it’s best to have your dog or cat micro-chipped for easy detection. Most dogs love to feel the wind on their furry faces however, allowing them to stick their heads out of a moving car window is dangerous. Flying debris and insects can cause inner ear or eye injuries and lung infections, abrupt stops or turns can cause major injury or worse! Pets riding in a car should always be secured in a crate or wear a seatbelt harness designed especially for them. Springtime is a great time to bring home a new family pet. These new puppies and kittens should be seen by a vet within a week after you bring them home. Many times, breeders or shelters will start them out with their first vaccine, but that is just the beginning. Many vaccines need boosters done to be fully effective because they are growing and they are being exposed to new things.

Call us for an appointment, so we may get to know your new furry family member and help keep them happy and healthy.

Working here has been a Erin Babcock White gift. It has allowed me the time to raise my two children, create and sell my art and to learn a trade that is so fulfilling all while being surrounded by art in a beautiful community!

Custom framing is my specialty. The diversity of each project keeps me inspired; along with the excitement shown by the customers. Durable elegance for everyday

Blue Water Polish Pottery

I

by Thien Nguyen August

ntricate, hand painted designs in earthy reds, sunny yellows and distinct cobalt blue are the marks of Polish pottery. Valued for its beauty and craftsmanship for hundreds of years, these ceramic works of art are not just for special occasions. Made to withstand baking, cutting and freezing, these pieces add practical, casual elegance to every day. Kathy Kuck, owner of Blue Water Polish Pottery in White Bear Lake, fell in love with Polish pottery while she lived in Europe. Kathy has made numerous trips to Boleslawiec, Poland visiting the factories and choosing the patterns and shapes for the collections that can be found at her shop both online and locally. Some of the shapes, such as the serving bowls with scalloped edges and the bowl with handles, are unique to certain factories. Kathy’s collections take about nine months to a year to complete. The process of making the pottery begins with white clay that is harvested from the rivers near the factories. Each piece is

hand-spun or molded and baked at 800° degrees celsius and a second firing at 1200° degrees celsius. The bottom of each piece of pottery will have a stamp with the factory symbol and Hand Made in Poland.

Some pieces are stamped with UNIKAT, which means “unique” in English. These patterns are more complex than traditional pieces, therefore, are painted by more skilled artisans. Collectors often seek out pottery with the UNIKAT stamp. The most accomplished artists earn the privilege of creating his or her own work from start to finish. These unikat pieces are signed by the artist. Rarity commands higher prices and is more collectible. Everyone in the factory can produce a traditional pattern, but only the very best create the signature unikat pieces. Take the beautiful and versatile cutting board: chop sweet potatoes on it, then drizzle some olive oil and salt & pepper. Place in the oven to bake and use the same “board” to serve from it; then into the dishwasher! The nonstick surface provides easy clean up. Using Polish pottery allows for effortless style and function for daily meals and special occasions.

Find handmade and unique Polish pottery at Blue Water Polish Pottery at 2208 Third St. in White Bear Lake. Shop hours vary with the season so follow Blue Water Polish Pottery on Facebook for the most up to date shop information. Shop online at bluewaterpolishpottery.com.

A WOMAN’S PLACE

Owner Kathy Kuck

It is safe for the oven, microwave, freezer & dishwasher. The stoneware distributes heat evenly for perfect baking and the nonstick surface makes clean up easy. Although the pottery is extremely durable, it is pottery, so care should be used. 1. When putting Polish pottery in the oven always abide by the rule that you should put cold pottery in a cold oven and hot pottery in a hot oven. 2. Do not put a hot dish from the oven in a sink full of water as this may lead to glaze crazing or the dish to crack. 3. When baking use a wire rack to place your pie or casserole on to cool. Avoid placing directly onto a cold or wet counter. 4. Don’t take Polish pottery straight from the freezer and put it into the oven. Let it come to room temperature first. 5. The dishwasher is recommended for washing the pottery, as it is easy for you & gentle on the pottery. Avoid kitchen cleansers. 6. Do not apply direct heat from stovetop or grill, or broiler. 7. Use and enjoy your Polish pottery daily!

Ultra Sbyimple D esign Nancy Roth There is something so inspiring about this time of year. The bursting buds emerging on trees, the smell of warming, clean air, as ice crystals melt against a clear blue sky. Spring, by its very nature, evokes a sense of hope, especially for Minnesotans. We made it through another winter - all things are new! As a designer, I feel the mood of my clients shift. It’s time to clean house, rethink your space, rearrange furniture, and get rid of clutter. The focus is on clean lines and light, bright, airy design. We want colors that pop, wake us up, while lifting our spirits. Ultraviolet has been named Pantone’s 2018 Color of the Year. One of the best ways to incorporate this brilliant shade is through accessories. Pillows, throw blankets and area rugs can be an excellent and affordable way to highlight a room. With recent home design color trends favoring monochromatic shades of gray, adding accessories with splashes of warm pinks, fuchsia, yellow, and spring green create a beautiful contrast that enlivens your space. Fresh flowers, combined with natural weathered materials such as reclaimed wood or a galvanized watering can, bring a feeling of the outdoors and nature inside the home. Try placing a few daffodil, tulip and hyacinth bulbs in a clear glass bowl, cover half way with water and watch life renew right before your eyes.

2 T fine sea salt 1 pound linguine pasta 10 – 12 T olive oil (divided) 4 – 5 large cloves garlic, finely chopped (about 2½ T) 2 C fresh Roma tomatoes, chopped (reserve ½ C for garnish) ½ C fresh Italian (“flat-leaf”) parsley, rough chopped + ¼ C for garnish 3 pounds clams and mussels ½ – 1 T red pepper flakes (to taste), plus more for garnish 1 C dry white wine – citrus and mineral notes work well ½ – 1 C clam juice, more if needed

Preparation In a large pot, add the 2 tablespoons of salt and plenty of water for the pasta. Cook 1 – 2 minutes, short of al dente, and plan to drain the pasta while the clams & mussels are cooking. Pasta will finish cooking in the sauce when combined with clams & mussels. Chop garlic, then place in a small bowl and set aside. Chop the tomatoes and place them in a small bowl as well – making sure to reserve about ½ cup for garnish – and set aside. Chop the fresh parsley, setting aside ½ cup for sauce and ¼ cup for garnish. Scrub clams and de-beard mussels as needed.

Measure out white wine, clam juice, and red pepper flakes. Place a large skillet over medium heat. Add 6 tablespoons of oil and chopped garlic and stir, allowing it to cook lightly for about a minute. Add clams & mussels, stirring for another minute. Then add the wine, clam juice, red pepper flakes, and 1½ cups of chopped tomatoes (reserving ½ cup of tomatoes for garnish), and ½ cup of parsley. Simmer (uncovered) for 5 – 7 minutes and stir until clams and mussels are opened. While clams & mussels are cooking, drain pasta and reserve ½ cup of pasta water. Add 4 - 6 tablespoons of olive oil to the pasta, and toss well. Add the linguine to the clams & mussels, and toss well. Pour everything into a big serving bowl or serve right from the skillet. Add reserved pasta water if needed. Garnish with the last ½ cup of chopped tomatoes, cup of chopped parsley, and more red pepper flakes to taste. Garnishing with the fresh tomatoes and parsley adds another layer of bright color and flavor that finishes the dish beautifully. Serve with plenty of crusty baguette to soak up every last bit of sauce.

Planning Your Vegetable Garden by Steve Marier rowing your own vegetable garden can be easy, successful and satisfying when you have a plan.

Where do you have sun? What vegetables do you like? Are you going to preserve or consume the produce when it comes in? When are you going to garden? Everyone can be successful at growing their own food whether it’s a patio tub, deck tomatoes or a large plot in the backyard. It all starts with quality soil. To find out exactly what your soil needs to produce the best harvest before all your hard work, we strongly suggest “Soil Testing”. The University of Minnesota provides soil testing for $17.00. Take a soil sample from your gardening area by digging multiple core samples with a gardening trowel 0-6” deep. Gather enough core samples to equal about a half-gallon of soil. Mix all the samples together.

We are happy to take in your soil samples, help you with the paperwork and submit them with no shipping charge. We also provide a free consultation with Steve, our Lawn and Garden expert, when your results return in about 3-4 weeks. Steve is well versed in traditional and Organic gardening methods. Choose vegetables that you and your family like to eat. Beginner gardeners should start with 2-3 vegetables from

the cool weather vegetable list and 2-3 vegetables from the warm vegetable list. Cool weather vegetables are planted in the early spring when the soil is still cool. These include cauliflower, brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, potatoes, onions, radishes, lettuce, peas, spinach and kale. Warm weather vegetables are planted close to Memorial Weekend or later, when our soils and night time temps have warmed up. These vegetables include sweet corn, cucumbers, pumpkins, squash, tomatoes, and peppers. Many vegetables can be started by seed, planted directly into your soil. Some vegetables are best started as seedlings, like cauliflower, brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, tomatoes, and peppers. When using seedlings, dig a hole that is at least a few inches deeper than the depth of the pot the seedlings are in. Remove each seedling from its container and loosen the roots very gently. Plant the seedlings. Use a root stimulator to avoid “transplant shock”. Follow these simple steps for a great start. Plan on “side dressing” some of your vegetables 4-8 weeks after planting so the vegetable crops produce to their full potential. Side dressing is the application of fertilizers in a shallow furrow along the side of vegetable rows or in a circle around individual plants. The dressings you choose depends on your soil type and what fertilizers were used prior to planting. Sweet corn, tomatoes, peppers and vine crops will need additional nitrogen; which produces higher yields.

Water regularly. Watering depends on a number of factors. The general rule is about an inch or two of water each week with deep, infrequent watering, as opposed to shallow frequent watering, which can lead to weaker root growth and evaporation. Harvest time can sneak up quickly! The challenge is to keep ahead of a plethora of vegetables. Take a basket out to the garden every day to see what has ripened. Picking vegetable as soon as they are ripe often encourages more production.

This abbreviated version of planting your vegetable garden can help you to have the best garden ever. More information would include weed control, caging or trellising some of your plants, row widths, proper organization of your space, watering, disease control (tomato blight) and insects. Steve, at the Hugo Feed Mill & Hardware store, is happy to discuss any and all of these topics. Hopefully this information is helpful to get you off to a great gardening start for 2018!

Wines For Spring

S

by Jack Farrell

pringtime brings us fresh, crisp air, sweet warm sunshine, a sense of renewal and a bounce in our steps that can all be equally reflected in a few notable springtime wines. Rosé, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Barbera are just a few suggestions that should be on your Spring Wine Bucket List. Ah rosé, the epitome of a springtime wine. With their soft, gentle aromas and wide spectrum of pink hues, the wines can vary in levels of acidity and are produced from just about every red grape varietal out there. Typically, you will find aromas and flavors of strawberry, peach or plum fruit that can be somewhat delicate or can deliver a punch of flavor up front. The category of rosé wine is growing in popularity every year, and winemakers are experimenting with different varietals and blends. Remember sparkling rosé wines for picnic lunches! If you want to stick with traditional rosé, look for Tavel rosé from the Rhone Valley or Rose d’Anjou from the Loire Valley. Tavel tends to be a bit fuller with lush and deep notes of red and black berries while rosés from the Anjou region of the Loire Valley have a soft and creamy palate with light, bright strawberry hints. Try the Cuvée Royale Tavel or the Les Ligeriens Rosé d’Anjou.

Next on your Bucket List try Sancerre from the Loire region of France! Sancerre is produced from Sauvignon Blanc grape and is considered to the best expression of the varietal. The wines are crisp with a flinty, mineral quality that cuts through citrus fruit flavors with precise balance, achieving amazing complexity and great depth of flavor. They are delicate enough to be served on their own as an aperitif and hearty enough to pair exquisitely with seafood dishes and goat cheese. Chenin Blanc, a beautiful wine that is often pushed aside and stocked with overly sweet table wines, is a must try this season. Once again, I urge you to try this varietal from the Loire Valley, where producers know how to elicit delightful wines with balance between sweetness and acidity. Chenin Blanc produced in Vouvray typically offers aromas of white flowers, honey and apricot and can surprise you with a freshness and subtleness that is hard to match. Present Voltaire Vouvray on your table, pair with brunch or seafood dishes and enjoy! Breaking out the BBQ? Pick up a bottle of Barbera! This Italian red wine is low in tannins and has a relatively high level of acidity, making it a great pair for bbq ribs, mushrooms or burgers on the grill. The wines are deep in color and offer cherry, red and black berry flavors making it an easy, go-to spring wine. Throw a homemade pizza on the grill, top with mushrooms, fresh herbs, blue cheese crumbles and veggies, pop open a bottle of Batasiolo Barbera d’Alba and enjoy checking this wine off of your Spring Wine Bucket List.
