It’s about way more than flowers G iving back is a value that’s been ingrained in Lexington Floral owner Allie Tempelis since she started helping her mother, Barb Rose, in the family floral shop as a teenager. When she purchased the business last year, Tempelis renovated the store and broadened its focus on eco-friendly, locally supportive, hand-crafted products. Fresh floral bouquets are arranged on site by the shop’s team of experienced designers. “What people see is what they’re getting,” Tempelis said. “It’s our work, it’s our designs. Everything’s arranged in our store.” While its floral arrangements make a festive addition to a holiday dinner table or gift for that hard-to-buy-for person, Lexington Floral also carries a huge variety of unique gifts in all price ranges. Your purchase supports artisans and small businesses in Minnesota and around the world. Tempelis hand-picks products to ensure they’re high quality yet affordable. For example, each piece of Moxie Malas crystal healing and aromatherapy jewelry is hand crafted in the U.S. using semiprecious gemstones and crystals, specially designed so that pure essential oils can be dropped directly onto the stone to provide healing energy throughout the day. Another option: jewelry by Minnesota native Jessica Matrasko, who handmakes pieces from such exotic natural items as South African porcupine quills collected after they are shed, and neolithic era arrowheads from Morocco . . .
4 SaVour
Or consider jewelry by Fair Anita, a Minnesota-based social enterprise that provides fair wages and business development opportunities for female artisans all over the world. Someone on your gift list will surely love a hat and scarf by Love Your Melon, a Minnesota-based apparel company that donates 50% of its profits to benefit children with pediatric cancer; a cozy wool blanket by the renowned Faribault Woolen Mill; or a hypo allergenic, eco-friendly scarf handcrafted by Shupaca, a company that equitably employs Ecuadorian artisans in a small region outside of Quito. Lexington Floral also carries a wide variety of candles and soaps, from vegan to organic to decorative, including candles by Thymes, Northern Lights, and Minnesota manufacturer Illume. There’s no substitute for the personal commitment and trusted expertise that comes with buying local. Supporting other small businesses and crafters throughout the year helps Tempelis express her gratitude for all those who have been a part of the Lexington Floral family over the years. They’re part of why her business is about way more than flowers. “It’s an honor to be considered a staple in our neighborhood,” Tempelis said, “celebrating birthdays, graduations, weddings, anniversaries, and births with our employees and comforting each other through the loss of beloved friends.” The team at Lexington Floral is proud to have served the Shoreview and Twin Cities community for 33 years.

A baking powerhouse with local roots by Elizabeth Callen
ith its 140 employees working to produce an average of 100 cakes, 1,000 pounds of bread and 12,000 doughnuts each day, Grandma’s Bakery is a powerhouse of a baking operation. Today, its branches stretch far across the Twin Cities metro, but a look back at its past shows that the beloved bakery’s roots are simple, humble and local. In 1978, John Lupo opened his first store, a Mister Donut franchise on the east side of St. Paul. He has since become a Certified Master Baker and studied bread baking in rural France, but back then, had no formal training in the food retail industry, save for the summers he spent scooping ice cream as a teenager at Bridgeman’s in Minneapolis. “I really just needed something to do. I’ve always liked food, and I thought the business would be easy,” he remembered. But Lupo quickly learned that the baking business was far from a cake walk. Not even two years into the new venture, he realized his Mister Donut location was failing.
presspubs.com/savour 7
“It (the east side) was a bad location for a doughnut shop,” he said. “But it was a great location for a neighborhood bakery.” Realizing that he needed to make a change to save his business, Lupo called the Mister Donut corporate office to ask if he could exit his contract and leave the franchise. He was told yes but given a mere 24 hours to take down the Mister Donut signage and replace it with his own. The story behind the name “Grandma’s Bakery” isn’t particularly complex—Lupo explained that it simply popped into his head during that 24hour timeframe. “I needed a new name, and I needed one fast. For better or for worse, that’s what stuck,” he laughed. In December 1980, Lupo remodeled the Mister Donut location, changed the name and expanded his repertoire to include breads, cakes, rolls and pastries in addition to the classic doughnuts. The business continued to operate on St. Paul’s east side but in the early 1990s, moved to White Bear Lake, which is now home to two Grandma’s Bakery locations—one downtown and one off of Buerkle Road.

Some of the more creative items made for the holidays include customized cakes in the form of a giant slice of pumpkin pie and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and elaborately decorated gingerbread houses.

Neighborhood bakeries are a rarity nowadays, Lupo says. “When you think about it, we are really a dinosaur in the field. There’s not that many of us left,” he explained. He credits the success of Grandma’s to his involvement in his industry and community—and to a lot of very hard work. Shortly after opening Grandma’s, Lupo joined the Retail Bakers of America (RBA) and
“When you think about it, bakeries are there for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, desserts, funerals, first communions, weddings, birthdays … You name an occasion, a bakery is there on the table in some way, shape or form.” – John Lupo
was elected president last spring. Through RBA, he spearheaded an effort to establish a National Bakery Day, now held each September, as a means of celebrating the contributions neighborhood bakeries make to their communities. “When you think about it, bakeries are there for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, desserts, funerals, first communions, weddings, birthdays … You name an occasion, a bakery is there on the table in some way, shape or form,” he said. “We are hard working people— generous to a fault, maybe. … But really, we’re small businesses. We employ a lot of people and teach a lot of job skills. We are an important part of the fabric of the communities that we serve.” With 40 years under Grandma’s belt, Lupo is hopeful for more but wants to focus on quality over quantity. “I don’t know that I want to get any bigger,” he said. “I think that we just want to keep getting better. We’re always trying to improve everything that we do—a little bit here, a little bit there. We always want to be the best we can be.”

ou could say that Rustic Revival Barnwood founder Rhonda Engle is in the business of retrieving lost history: she loves helping people infuse a touch of lost Americana into their DIY projects using reclaimed barnwood. There’s something wistful and mysterious about the sight of a crumpling old barn. “Barns are coming to their end. Back in the day, there would be a barn every five acres of farmland. Now they’re being torn down left and right. Nothing is being put back in their place,” Engle said. Engle’s deep appreciation for weathered wood took hold early on. She grew up on a farm and was taught woodworking by her grandfather, whom she called a great craftsman. The business she started in 2016 has grown into a thriving store with a 6,000 square foot showroom filled with reclaimed lumber, beams, doors, windows and hardware. Engle calls it “the Home Depot of barnwood.” More than 20 suppliers bring in two to ten loads of wood every week, 80% rescued from farmlands in Minnesota or Wisconsin. The shop provides design and installation services for projects like accent walls, finishing and custom work, but most customers are Do-It-Yourselfers looking to spruce up their personal space. Sometimes, a little design help is all they need. “In today’s world, we’re all about not being wasteful and reusing products,” Engle said. “Appreciating history, too. Barnwood has all those dimensions. It’s a piece of history that has meaning, not just a plank of board. It’s got the age and the character and the beauty that takes 100 years to create - it cannot be reproduced.” In addition to boards and beams, the store carries just about everything that can be reclaimed from old barns - mantles, doors, corrugated tin and hardware, everything from coat hooks to sliding barn door tracks, door handles and hinges, both reclaimed and new. “We build a ton of custom doors,” Engle said. The team is happy to visit a site and tear down a structure or pick up lumber, she added. The store also has a great selection of unique, one-of-a-kind furniture, doors, signs, wall decor, barnwood-framed mirrors, serving trays and other gifts. And they can make custom monogramed signs, signs with state or team logo cutouts, or customordered items like cases for flags or collectibles. Check out the store’s Facebook page for upcoming DIY workshops, videos and photos of completed projects, as well as Rhonda’s incredible story of how she got started in the barnwood business. facebook.com/rusticrevivalbarnwood

Treeeeeeeats! Hi, I’m Rowdy! Nothing gets my tail a-wagging like a treat ... except maybe a nice scratch behind the ears, a rousing romp outside with a ball or some face-to-face “good boy” talk from a human. Oh, and also when I’m allowed on the couch (that’s the BEST, am I right?). My humans know all of this, of course, but the people here at Goldwood Kennels also seem to know just what makes me tick (oops, shouldn’t have used THAT word).
They must really like me, because every time I come stay with them, I have my own private room! They have my raised bed all ready for me with plush blankets and clean dishes. I can even bring my favorite toy. I always know when it’s time to eat and, no kidding, my food tastes even better here!
At Goldwood, I never have to share my space or my play time with other dogs (except for my sister pup, Ava, but she’s pretty fun). Cats even have their very own section because, well, cat’s rule. If I ever have to take medicine (gulp), they’re pros. Anxiety? No problem, they can find a quiet space and help me relax. I get lots of cuddles and plenty of outdoor exercise in their huge play yards. Every time I’m outside, I get my very own human to play with, sweeeeet! And that soft music calms me down and helps me sleep. I can’t wait to come back!
So, tell your human to bring you out for a visit; they can take a tour while you get treats and belly scratches. The Goldwood staff will answer all of their questions and listen carefully to learn everything important about you. Oh, and when you stay, be sure to tell ‘em Rowdy sent you Rowdy
... trust me, you’ll be wagging away!

KEEPING PETS SAFE DURING T
HE arrival of cooler temperatures sparks various changes. Chilly air and precipitation can be dangerous, especially to pets that are unaccustomed to extreme changes in temperature. Pet owners may be well aware of the hazards of warm weather, including the threat of leaving pets in hot cars. But cold weather also has its share of risks. Consider these tips to keep pets safe and secure: Schedule a check-up The American Veterinary Medical Association suggests scheduling a visit with a veterinarian to check for any medical issues. Cold weather can aggravate symptoms of certain conditions, such as arthritis. A thorough examination can shed light on potential problems. Keep homes humidified Going in and out of the house and moving from cold air to dry indoor heat can affect pets’ skin. Itching and flaking may result, causing pets to scratch at such areas. Maintain humidity in the home for comfort. The ASPCA also says to reduce bathing to help preserve essential oils on the skin.
Protect paws outdoors Pet paws are sensitive to chemical ice melts. Salt that is chloride based is the most toxic. Massage petroleum jelly or another protectant onto paw pads, or consider the use of pet booties. Keep pets indoors more often Pets should not remain outdoors for long stretches of time in frigid temperatures, even if they are accustomed to roaming during other seasons.
Update identification Snow and ice can mask scent cues that help pets find their way home. Update contact information and make sure pets’ collars are on tightly. Keep coolant / antifreeze locked up Coolant and antifreeze are lethal to dogs and cats and should be kept out of reach. Clean up any spills from vehicles promptly.
Provide options for sleeping Come winter, cats and dogs may need new sleep spaces to avoid drafts and stay warm. Give them other spots they can call their own. Consider a sweater or vest Some pets are more tolerant to the cold than others. However, some dogs and cats may benefit from a sweater, vest or coat designed for pets to offer more insulation.

The Art Preserve and Studio has been serving White Bear Lake and surrounding areas for nearly 40 years! The shop has evolved into an amazing & unique gallery and gift shop - You’ll be inspired, finding items for your home or that perfect gift, most made by local artisans. Our specialty is Custom Picture Framing - the owner Erin White has worked at the shop for 30 years, and first came to the frame game as an artist herself. “I got a job from the first owner and have worked with 3 other owners over that time - each lovingly passing it on to the next. Now it’s my turn, it took me awhile to get there but it was obviously meant to be”. We promise to always offer a fair price, many times less then the big box store sales prices! We love what we do and guarantee you will love the results!

T ruman Company top-rated coin and precious metal exchange
ore than 40 years in business has given The Truman Company owner Roger Westerling a clear idea of what customers want in a coin and precious metals dealer. Most of all, he says, it’s to be treated fairly. “I believe in the repeat customer. If you treat everyone fairly they will come back,” Westerling said. “Doing business in the right and honest way is important. Most of our business is repeat customers. I want to make everyone’s experience pleasant and as stress-free as possible.” The Truman Company buys gold and silver bullion, old gold and silver jewelry (scrap gold), and other collectables. Their specialty is the coin business. Licensed by the State of Minnesota as a Bullion Coin Dealer, the company is one of the leading rare coin and precious metals dealers in the Twin Cities, often beating the prices of low-cost internet companies. Personalized service and competitive pricing are the hallmarks of The Truman Company. Taking care of customers and giving them a fair price are values handed down from Westerling’s Uncle Truman, who taught him about the metals and coins business as a young man. After obtaining his business degree, Westerling spent many years working with some of the finest and most prominent dealers in the business before establishing The Truman Company in 2010. Customers may be local, regional or national. Westerling prefers the local business because he loves interacting with customers. Often, he says, people come in wanting to buy something tangible thinking that the price will go up. Sometimes a customer will inherit an item or a whole estate, with no clue

Aidan and Roger buying another coin deal with the help of Sonny, the shop dog. what they have. Westerling and his team go into the home and make a list of every item, with their offer price.
Some of their more unusual ‘finds?’
“Coins that people have no idea are rare until we tell them. One case comes to mind - they thought they just had old baseball cards but they had cards from the ‘50s - ‘60s that were in the low six-figures.” - Roger Westerling Owner, Truman Company
The biggest mistake people make, Westerling said, is to clean an item. “Do Not Clean,” he emphasized. “It totally destroys the collector value of any coin. Just box them up and bring them to us. We’re happy to sort and itemize and we can do it much faster.” Westerling and his store manager Aidan Kelly, both love to be in the shop every day, “not knowing what will walk in the door next.” And of course, Sonny, the labrador retriever, is in the shop every day to greet visitors. The Truman Company is open weekdays until 6pm, and Saturdays 10am - 2pm, or by appointment.
