Blaine

ci.blaine.mn.us Estimated population 2014: 61,190 (city-data.com) laine is a city of 34 square miles, located north of the Twin Cities in Anoka and Ramsey counties. It sits adjacent to Coon Rapids, Andover, Lino Lakes and Mounds View. Blaine has been labeled as one of the Top 100 Best Places to Live by MONEY Magazine. With a location that intersects with Interstate 35W and Highways 10 and 65, it offers quick routes to both Minneapolis and St. Paul. The world’s largest amateur sports facility, the National Sports Center, is set in Blaine. This is one of Minnesota’s most-visited sports arenas. Also located in Blaine is the TPC Twin Cities, the state’s only PGA Tour golf facility, host to the annual 3M Championship, as well as the Four Seasons Curling Club — the first year-round curling venue in North America.

B

History: Blaine’s wetlands and sandy soil proved a disappointment to its earliest farmers, who soon moved on to other sites. Laddie Lake bears the name of one of those first settlers, Phillip Laddy, a native of Ireland, who arrived in the area in 1862. Records show that it wasn’t until 1865 that the area’s first permanent settler established a claim and stuck to it. Hunters, however, found it prime hunting territory, situated as it was between the Mississippi, Rum, and St. Croix rivers. Blaine was part of the township of Anoka until 1877, when it split off into a township of its own. Due to the persuasive powers of the township’s first chairman of the township’s board of supervisors, Maine native Moses Ripley, the township was named in honor of James G. Blaine, a Republican senator from Maine who also served as secretary of state under U.S. presidents Garfield and Arthur. James T. Elwell purchased 52,700 acres in the 1880s and 1890s, on which he established Golden Lake Farm and Oak Leaf Farm, both livestock farms, and

built 200 miles of ditches to drain the marshy land to make it easier to farm. The township incorporated as a city in 1954 in order to avoid annexation; Alfred Bernstein was elected as the first mayor. The city’s population over the years has been closely tied to the development of major transportation corridors in the area, which makes it attractive to businesses as well. Circle Pines

ci.circle-pines.mn.us Estimated population 2014: 4,949 (city-data.com) ircle Pines is a city of two square miles located 15 miles north of the Twin Cities, adjacent to Shoreview, Lino Lakes, Lexington and Blaine. Circle Pines has extensive parks, walking trails, good schools and safe neighborhoods that make the community a wonderful place to live, work or play. Circle Pines has been voted the Third Most Perfect Suburb by CNBC.com, recognizing the city’s mix of affordable housing, good schools, educated neighbors, low crime and a reasonable commute enjoyed by its residents.

C

History According to the city’s website, in 1945, while lying in the shade of the trees at the picnic ground at Golden Lake after swimming, V.S. Petersen sat up and announced

Quad Area Community Insider 2020-21 “I have an idea.” Petersen found two men sympathetic to cooperative notions. They were Thomas Ellerbe, head of the engineering and architecture firm that designed the Ramsey County Courthouse in St. Paul, and Paul Steenberg. Steenberg was president of Steenberg Construction Company, which had built the Coffman Memorial Union at the University of Minnesota. In May of 1946, a cooperative village of 1,203 acres was announced “to unite the habitation benefits of a functional and contemporary community with the economic advantages of a consumer’s cooperative.” The symbol for cooperatives was a pine tree with a circle around it; thus the name Circle Pines was born. Planned was cooperative ownership of adult education, nurseries, educational and recreational activities and municipal utilities. Housing costs were to run from $4,000 to $20,000. The developers anticipated construction of 500 homes in the first two years and completion of the project within five years. After only three years, the cooperative lifestyle was abandoned, in part because of problems in securing financing and partly due to rifts among leaders. On April 8, 1950, an area which was formerly part of Blaine and Centerville townships was incorporated as the Village of Circle Pines; in 1974 the village became a city. First incorporated as a cooperative in 1946, it remains the only suburban city in Minnesota that operates its own municipal natural gas distribution company. (Editor’s note: portions of the History of Circle Pines was written by resident Stephan Lee.)

History: According to the city’s website, archaeological investigations show that Dakota or Ojibwa tribes were the first inhabitants to make camps along local area lakes and Rice Creek because of the abundant fishing and ricing resources. In 1862, Phillip Laddy became the first recorded white settler in what later became known as Blaine Township. Laddy settled near the lake that still carries his name (often called Laddie Lake today) near Highway 65 and Anoka County 10. In 1877, "Blaine" was selected as the name for the township that contained what is now the cities of Lexington, Circle Pines, and Blaine. On May 5, 1950, an election of settlers was held to incorporate what is now known as Lexington, and Lexington was incorporated as a village on May 21, 1950, with a population of 569. The first mayor was Cyrus Palmquist. Leo Ryan, who had moved to the area in 1946, was instrumental in organizing a petition for the new village. Ryan suggested the name "Lexington" for the new village. The area had been generally known as Lexington Park, because Lexington Avenue was the eastern boundary. In addition, Ryan suggested the name in honor of his old Army unit. The "First Pioneer Infantry

In 1950, Lexington became a city.

Lino Lakes

linolakes.us Estimated Population 2017: 21,407 (U.S. Census Bureau) ino Lakes is a city of 33 square miles in the southeast corner of Anoka County, adjacent to Blaine, Centerville and Circle Pines. It was incorporated into a village in 1955 and received city status in 1972. The 2,700-acre Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Regional Park is situated in the center of the city. The park is a county-owned nature preserve, consisting of 13 lakes and several wetlands. But residents also like the fact that Interstates 35E and 35W offer just a 20-minute drive to either downtown Minneapolis or St. Paul. Money Magazine recently selected Lino Lakes as one of the top 100 Best Places to Live.

L

History: According to the city’s website, when the first settlers arrived in the area Native Americans were already making their homes around the cluster of Reshanau, Baldwin, Rice and Marshan Lakes. The Dakota Indians found the area to be a land of plenty, with wild rice and an abundance of small game. Today, several Indian burial grounds are still located in the area. White hunters and trappers began coming to the area from Canada and the eastern states around 1850. Those who settled on the west side of the lake had names like Ramsden, Speiser and Wenzel. Those who settled on the east side of the lake included the Cardinals, LaMottes, Houles and Dupres. Many of their descendants still live in the area today. The first unit of local government, the township of Centerville, was organized Aug. 11, 1857, encompassing an area of 36 square miles. The population of just under 300 was organized into three loosely knit communities, the “German settlement” west of the lakes, the “Swede settlement” south of the lakes, and the “French settlement” east of the lakes. In the 1950s neighboring villages started annexing land away from Centerville Township. To protect the boundaries and allow for the financing of public improvements, the residents of the township voted to incorporate into a village. Several names were suggested for the new village, and most contained the word “lakes.” Although the origin of the word “lino” is unknown, a Lino post office operated locally for about 10 years in the late 1800s. The town board decided to name the new village “Lino

Lakes.” On May 11, 1955, the Village of Lino Lakes was incorporated. It covered the original Centerville Township, with the exception of the Village of Centerville, and was comprised of 21,000 acres of land and 1,800 citizens. In 1972, the state Legislature passed a law changing all Minnesota villages to cities, hence Lino Lakes’ current status.
