Jolene Frid of Lino Lakes performs at Minnesota’s first ever pole dance competitions.
MAPLEWOOD — Minnesota pole dance history was made this weekend — and Jolene Frid of Lino Lakes was part of it. The state's fi rst Minnesota Regional Pole Dance Competitions were held at the Maplewood Performing Arts Theater Jan. 8-9. Frid was among the 60 competitors from Minnesota and surrounding states. Not only was it the state's first pole dance competitions, but it was Frid's as well. She competed classic style in the novice category. Performers could choose from dance styles such as classic, performance theater, pole sport and artistic dance. Levels of competition included novice, intermediate, advanced and elite. Women's, men's and doubles categories had
winners in each level. In 2013 Frid saw a video of pole dancer Jenyne Butterfly. “My jaw was on the floor when I saw the video,” she said. “I would love to do that. It was the fi rst thing I saw besides dancing that I was driven at all costs to do.” Frid signed up for a pole dance class in Minneapolis at Knockout Bodies and then purchased her own pole, which is in her basement. She has a personal instructor who guides her via Skype. Frid danced to “Tambourine” by Eve at the competitions. “I'm not really looking at it as a competition,” said Frid. “It's going to be so much fun to perform and be with other pole dancers.” The competitions were put on by Pole and Performing Art, a pole dance business owned by Myss Angie Lofquist of St. Paul. A snowmobile trail groomer’s vehicle falls through the ice in Hardwood Creek Jan. 2.
Not so fast — some snowmobile trails are not quite frozen yet. The Rice Creek Snowmobile Trail still has unfrozen spots over several of its marsh areas, relayed Bill Prinsen, president of the Rice Creek Snowmobile Trail Association Club. “The water level is one to two feet higher than normal,” said Prinsen. Marsh spots which appear to be snow covered are not frozen in areas. Trail groomers recently fell through the ice in several places. The groomers were able to pull themselves out, but others who try to go on the trails may not be so lucky.

The trail, which runs 73 miles from Ham Lake to Scandia, has its most dangerous spots in the Lino Lakes and Hugo area. The Anoka County parks area, and swamp areas east of the Blacksmith Lounge on Highway 61 in Hugo are the most dangerous spots right now. Any other creek areas, swamps or drainage ditches should also be avoided. The club has plans to construct two bridges on the trails but may not be able to do so until the summer due to the high water level. For more information and updates visit ricecreektrail.com.
