Before we say goodbye to 2022 and hello to 2023, it is a tradition of the Quad Community Press to look back at some of the most memorable stories of the year. In 2022, pages were filled with a variety of news, including stories about crimes, events, schools, churches,

All Good Organics Farm, also known as the Cardinal farm, is the 2022 Anoka County Family Farm of the Year. “I am honored that our farm is recognized,” said owner Butch Cardinal. “It’s quite an achievement, and we do work hard for the community.” The farm is also celebrating its 150th anniversary. “We also received the Sesquicentennial award from the University of Minnesota,” Cardinal said. “I remember getting the Centennial plaque back in 1983. I didn’t know there was one for 150 years until somebody from Anoka County called me and said we were the only farm in Anoka County that has ever qualified for that.”

LINO LAKES — The city of Lino Lakes has joined an ever-growing list of cities that have established moratoriums to prohibit the sale, testing, manufacturing and distribution of THC products. “Staff recognizes that we are a little bit late to this game and need to get something in place for our community,” City Administrator Sarah Cotton said. It is now legal in Minnesota to sell certain edibles and beverages infused with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the cannabis ingredient extracted from hemp. The law, which took effect earlier this summer, limits the sale of CBD and THC

LINO LAKES — Though there might be a shortage of workers and supplies, there is no shortage of development concepts and proposals coming before the City Council. Most recently, council members took another look at a concept plan for a residential development known as Villas on Vicky, and discussed a potential future concept plan from M/I Homes. Several City Council members said they liked what they saw in the Villas on Vicky concept plan, while

What is domestic violence?

Domestic violence is the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault and/or other abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another. It includes physical violence, sexual violence, threats and emotional abuse. The frequency and severity of domestic violence can vary dramatically.

North metro nonprofit celebrates 35 years

First step is talking about it BY SHANNON GRANHOLM MANAGING EDITOR

Candice Amundson spent eight years of her life living in constant fear. Once her child’s life was in danger, she knew she had to get out of that situation. Amundson is one of the more than 10 million women and men that have experienced physical abuse by an intimate partner in the U.S. First observed in October 1981 as a national “Day of Unity,” Domestic Violence Awareness Month is held each October to unite advocates across the nation in their efforts to end domestic violence. Communities and advocacy organizations across the country connect with the public and one another throughout the month to raise awareness about the signs of abuse and ways to stop it, and to uplift survivors by sharing their stories and providing additional resources to leaders and policymakers. After about 10 months of dating a man, Amundson found out she was pregnant. In the beginning of the relationship she says he was verbally abusive, but never physically abusive. “It started out as name-calling,” she recalled. “But then it turned into control. He started controlling the finances, wanted control of where I was, what I was doing.” Once Amundson’s child was born, she says he started being physically violent toward her, but never their son.

BY THE NUMBERS Minnesota 33.9% of women and 25.1% of men experience intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner rape and/or intimate partner stalking in their lifetimes. 14 people in Minnesota were murdered in domestic violence homicides in 2018. 22,760 the number of active protection orders in Minnesota between 2006 and 2015.

Lennar presents new concept plan for Watermark development

BY SHANNON GRANHOLM MANAGING EDITOR

“We like to say that there’s no conflict too small,” said Mediation and Restorative Services (MARS) Program and Development Manager Dana Amundson. Next week, MARS will celebrate its 35th anniversary with a party/ fundraiser. Since 1987, the nonprofit has helped families, neighborhoods, schools, landlords, tenants, businesses and consumers manage and resolve conflict through education and conflict resolution services. “We promote peaceful communities,” said MARS Executive Director Bernadette Foh.

LINO LAKES — U.S Home LLC (dba Lennar) is proposing to amend housing products and lot widths in the Watermark planned unit development (PUD) land use plan. Watermark is a 372-acre masterplanned residential community consisting of 692 single-family lots and 172 townhome units on the northwest corner of I-35E and Main Street. City Planner Katie Larsen explained that the total housing unit count will not change

from the current total of 864; however, Lennar would like to make changes to the north end of the development to address the current housing market. Josh Metzer, Lennar land entitlement manager, said that the company proposes to change some of its villa lots to townhomes, venture lots (45-55 feet wide) and heritage lots (55+ feet wide). In addition, it would like to introduce some 45-footwide lots and increase the overall public space in the development from 60.79 acres to 74.65 acres. The reason for the changes, Metzer said, is twofold: the villa
