Environmental study nixed for casey’s BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR
CIRCLE PINES — The City Council unanimously denied at its Dec. 12 meeting a citizen petition requesting an environmental assessment worksheet (EAW) be prepared for the proposed Casey’s General Store at 1 South Pine Drive. The request for an EAW was submitted to the city on Nov. 29 by Wayne Jacobson, owner of Jacobsen Environmental, on behalf of Patty Smith, owner of the Glen Oaks Center. The petition has 246 signatures, many from residents of Circle Pines, but also from cities like Hopkins, Shoreview, Champlin, Spring Lake Park, St. Paul and Chisago City. Some of the concerns include possible negative effects on water quality and pose traffic problems for area residents, light pollution and noise. “We have heard from neighbors and residents on both sides of the business sale. I just want to remind everybody it is a private sector sale between two businesses,” Mayor Dave Bartholomay explained at the beginning of the discussion. “The property is already zoned correctly for a business. Tonight’s agenda item only relates to the request for an EAW. Our job tonight is to decide whether an EAW is required or not. All of the other things such as traffic, lighting, stormwater management, are part of the whole proposal, which is not here tonight.” City Administrator Patrick Antonen explained the Environmental Quality Board (EQB) determined the city of Circle Pines was the responsible governing unit and is therefore responsible for determining if an EAW is necessary or not. A city has 30 days from when the EAW is requested to make a decision and

Gingerbread architects build holiday tradition BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR
This time of year, the Norway House in Minneapolis transforms into a gingerbread (or in Norwegian, pepperkake) wonderland filled with spicy versions of familiar sights such as the Target Center, the Stone Arch Bridge and
the Minnesota State Fair giant slide. One of those creations, a replica of the $2.6 million mansion at 828 Summit Ave. in St. Paul, was created by Breta LeVasseur, Rehbein Transit Inc. employee and Hugo resident (formerly of White Bear Lake) and Penny Birdsall, Wyoming resident (former-

Community members get RIPPED to support YMCA BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR
LINO LAKES — More than 100 members of the community and the YMCA spent a good portion of their Sunday sweating for a cause. The YMCA in Lino Lakes hosted its fourth annual RIPPEDathon Dec. 10, an event Hallie Hemric, the YMCA's director of healthy living, described as a
“90-minute sweat fest.” The event, in conjunction with a silent auction, raises money for the Y's annual giving campaign, which is predominantly used for membership assistance scholarships. R.I.P.P.E.D., also known as “the one-stop body shock,” stands for resistance, interval, power, plyometrics, endurance and diet. The class, offered
at the Y seven days a week, is the most popular fitness class at the Y. The class follows its acronym and changes up the workout every six to nine minutes, allowing every muscle group to get a quick, yet effective workout. R.I.P.P.E.D. can be found in more than 1,000 gyms nationwide. According to the R.I.P.P.E.D. website, a
50-minute workout can burn anywhere from 7501000 calories. Hemric, who is a master trainer, has been with the Y for six years. “My heart has always been with the Y,” she said. Hemric, who grew up in Minneapolis, was raised by a single SHANNON GRANHOLM | PRESS PUBLICATIONS mother and relied on asBarb Stein, of Lino Lakes, wanted to participated in sistance for programming the fourth annual RIPPEDathon to support the Y.
