LEXINGTON — Endurance Fitness of MN is one of the top five gyms in the world recently recognized for its fundraising efforts on behalf of Workout for Water.

Workout for Water is a global fitness fundraiser that raises money for water pumps for vulnerable communities. In recent years, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has been working to improve water, sanitation and basic hygiene in East Africa.

As part of the ongoing effort to fund this work, Les Mills has partnered with UNICEF to raise awareness and money to provide safe water. Each water pump costs $414.

LINO LAKES — The site of the former 49 Club on the corner of Hodgson Road and County Road J has been a topic of discussion for quite some time, whether it be about the memories associated with the place or what the site could look like in the future.

The 49 Club, which had been vacant since around 2003, was deemed “structurally substandard” by the City Council in April 2016 and demolished in October 2016.

The Planning and Zoning Board discussed an informal concept plan for the site at its Nov. 8 meeting. Community Development Director Michael Grochala told board members, “This is an informal discussion to see how the board feels regarding the general mix of uses, layout of (the) site, what city’s expectations would be.”

City staff has had ongoing conversations with Richard Morris, owner of the 17-acre parcel located north of the liquor store and insurance agency, regarding potential development of the site. The land is currently zoned general business (GB) but guided for mixed use in the city’s Comprehensive Plan, meaning it should be a mix of commercial and residential development.

A Master Planning Study was approved by the City Council in 2007, which was incorporated into the 2030 Comp Plan. The plan is intended to establish a general land use design with some specified important design elements.

tives, including: identifying appropriate land uses (present and future) in the study area; planning for road improvements to provide good access and circulation; identifying routing and phasing solutions for utilities to facilitate future development; and planning for redevelopment while recognizing existing businesses.

The study assumed that approximately half of the area would develop with residential uses at approximately 10 units per acre, and the Comp Plan allows the density to range from 8 to 15 units per acre.

The proposed concept plan calls for the entire Morris property to be residential development. The proposal currently includes single-level townhomes, an assisted living facility and a market-rate multifamily building. A total of 162 residential units are proposed, which would meet the required mixed-use housing density.

The plan also sketched out two new retail buildings of approximately 21,000 square feet in size on the adjacent properties to the south. While the property owner has had discussions with the abutting property owners, the proposed development would not necessarily include redevelopment of those sites.

Grochala explained the concept plan does accomplish some of the master plan objectives; however, a number of architectural, design and aesthetic elements would need to be addressed. “We have been very forthcoming with the owner and the developer that we are not looking for a typical residential development — we can do that anywhere in the city. We are looking for something to carry forward our vision for this area,� he said. “Any residential development that we consider for this

site should bear a high standard for architectural design and incorporation of certain site amenities and ultimately be a catalyst for getting the rest of the site going.�

Grochala said the city’s main concern is there would be no commercial included with the first phase of development. “Morris and myself would like to try to do something with this property so we have come up with this concept trying to be respectful to the single-family homes that are adjacent to it. This is a nice buffer,� said Joel Larson of Hampton Companies LLC. “Our philosophy and where we are at right now, is we would like to get some feedback on if the city would like to see us proceed with this, and if not, we will move on and Mr. Morris will have to try to figure out what to do with that property.�

Board member Perry Laden said his biggest concern with the concept plan is shared by city staff. “It seems to me, time and time again, we are ceding our mixed use to residential and we are losing out on commercial opportunities,� he said. “I don’t have any problem with the product they are proposing, but I’d like to see the commercial extend up more especially along Hodgson.�

Both board member Neil Evenson and Chair Paul Tralle thought the residential could jump-start the commercial development. “After spending a little over a year of talking with all the parties involved, this was the best we could do to provide the beginning or the rooftops to create something to happen. We are flexible.

We are wanting to do something next year,� said Jim Boo, Realtor with High Pointe Realty and a friend of Morris.

A question of how the insurance company and the liquor store would fit into the plan was brought up, and Larson explained both have tentative agree-

ments to sell, pending the outcome of the concept plan.

Despite some hesitation due to commercial, the board gave Larson and Boo the okay to proceed with the proposal.

The next step will be to submit a formal planned unit development (PUD) con-

cept plan. Grochala estimated it would be submitted sometime in January or February.

CENTENNIAL SCHOOL BOARD NOTES The Centennial School District took the following action at its Nov. 13 meeting: • Heard from Superintendent Brian Dietz, who said that throughout November and December there will be many community outreach events such as performances by students in theater, band and choir at locations throughout the community. Dietz noted the band will also perform at the Minnesota School Board Leadership Conference in January.

• Approved the consent agenda, which includes Oct. 23 meeting minutes, monthly bills, personnel items, field trips, gifts to the district and 2017-18 materials review committee. Policy 606 requires the Board of Education to recognize members of the materials review committee in the event a parent or community member formally objects to an instructional resource.

Committee members include: media specialist Jackie Luhmann; teachers

Julie Cross, Arnold Lamers, Kristina Thom and Janice Kegley-Sieg; parents Ann Summerfield and Stephanie Carlson; and Director of Curriculum and Instruction Caleb Drexler Booth.

• Heard from Booth, who presented on the World’s Best Workforce 2016-17 report and the 2017-18 plan. In accordance with Minnesota Statutes, section 120B.11, a school board must publish an annual report on the previous year’s World’s Best Workforce Plan and hold an annual public meeting to review goals, outcomes and strategies.

The legislation was passed in 2013 to ensure every school district in the state is making strides to increase student performance. The district has developed a plan that addresses five goals including: all children are ready for school; all third-graders can read at grade level, all racial and economic achievement gaps between students are closed, all students are ready for

career and college, and all students graduate from high school. The plan can be viewed online at https:// www.isd12.org/academicsactivities/worlds-bestworkforce-district-plan.

• Approved the 2018-19 and 2019-20 school district calendars, which were developed by the District Calendar Committee. The committee consists of teachers, principals and district administrators.

• Approved eight individual contract settlements for 201718 and 2018-19. Contracts consisted of a 2.2 percent salary increase along with a 2.5 percent increase for health insurance district contribution each year of the contract. Contracts approved include Joy Orcott, marketing and enrichment specialist; Sharon Sculley, community education coordinator; Casey Berg, technology network and infrastructure lead; Brenda Anderson, system administrator; Leslye Erzberger, career center

specialist; Eric Webster, PAC and auditorium coordinator; Patricia Garvie Carlson, Indian education coordinator; and Colleen Skoglund, aquatics coordinator.

• Approved adding four schedule B positions.

The positions have been recommended by the Schedule B Committee and will not be fi lled unless there is sufficient student participation. The positions will be funded by fees paid by student participants.

The positions include trap shooting head coach (season salary of $2,088), trap shooting assistant coach ($1,566), boys lacrosse level C coach ($3,313) and girls lacrosse level C coach ($3,313).

• Approved a resolution establishing combined polling places. The 2017 Legislature required that

by Dec. 31 of each year, the school board must designate combined polling places.

are the polling places for the following calendar year.

The combined polling places (Lino Lakes Civic Complex, Rice Lake Elementary School and Centennial Performing Arts Center) must be a polling place that has not been designated by a county or municipality and are established to serve precincts specified for all school district special and general elections not held on the same day as the statewide election.

• Approved a resolution approving the appointment of Suzy Guthmueller as the voting trustee of the Minnesota School District liquid asset fund for one year, effective Nov. 15.

The next school board work session will be at 5:30 p.m.

Monday, Dec. 4 and the next meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 18 at the District Office.

LEXINGTON CITY COUNCIL NOTES The Lexington City Council took the following action at its Nov. 16 meeting: • Approved a resolution calling for a public hearing on a proposal for a housing finance program and giving preliminary approval to the issuance of housing facility revenue bonds to fi nance a multifamily housing project pursuant to Minnesota law, and authorizing the publication of a notice of the hearing. (Dominium Acquisitions regarding the Lovell redevelopment.)

• Approved a resolution deferring special assessments for the 2017 Street Improvement project.

• Approved a resolution certifying ordinance violation charges against benefitted property; and approved a resolution certifying

delinquent water and sewer assessment against benefitted property.

• Approved the Lexington Park Board’s recommendation to appoint Gloria Murphy to the Park Board. Gloria is the wife of Councilmember Mike Murphy.

• Approved the third payment for the 2017 Street Improvement project to Hardrives Inc. in the amount of $146,874.

• Approved a resolution requesting conveyance of tax forfeited parcel to the city.

Keeping community charm

I

f you love where you live it most likely has something to do with your neighbors, schools, church, natural beauty, lakes, shopping and dining options, and the overall feeling you have when you go about your day in your community.

If you love where you live, you should get involved by doing things such as donating your time or money to local organizations, taking care of your home and neighborhood and shopping locally.

As we finish the madness of Black Friday and click away on Cyber Monday, be sure to remember your locally-owned retailers and small businesses. There are several reasons that ‘shopping Publisher’s small’ helps your community.

Locally-owned businesses provide jobs and employ local people, who View in turn also spend their money in Carter Johnson our community and keep the local economy strong. Small businesses pay taxes that greatly help support our school districts, our roads and infrastructure, and social services. You will also find unique items at local shops that you can’t get at big box stores, and you can even get that good feeling of knowing you did your part in shopping small.

It is up to us to support, defend and invest in the things we love about our community. If you favor a particular coffee shop, tell others about it.

If you had a great meal at a restaurant, go more often and talk it up to friends. If you have a choice to get your medication fi lled at a local pharmacy or a chain store, try the locally-owned option as more of your hard-earned money will stay in the community. I also find that customer service is typically superior at local shops, probably because the owners and employees are more invested since they live in our community, too.

A few weeks ago my father-in-law was feeling a little unsteady due to a pinched nerve in his back.

My wife suggested he get a walker for the shortterm, and he balked at spending $150 for one at a chain store. On my way home from work I remembered I pass two locally-owned pharmacies and three national chains, so I took on the challenge of finding him one for a reasonable price. After looking online, I stopped at one of the locally-owned shops. I was in and out the door with a walker for $55 in minutes, paying about $100 less. I made a choice because I knew that every cent of the owner’s profit would be put back into our town in one way or another, and I even saved money.

According to the Better Business Bureau, last year an estimated 112 million consumers reported shopping at small businesses on Small Business Saturday, a movement created by American Express in 2010 to encourage people to support small and independently-owned local businesses.

Of those people, 81 percent reported encouraging friends and family to shop or dine small, and 32 percent reported attending a community event. In our coverage area, hundreds of local businesses signed up to participate in this year’s Small Business Saturday.

By supporting local businesses, you help ensure that they will stay in our community. I have never heard anyone reference big box stores when talking about how charming their community is.

It’s the people and our small businesses — coffee shops, hair salons, hardware stores, birdseed shops, home decorating stores, clothing stores, liquor stores, dry cleaners, flower shops, grocery stores, and restaurants that give our community charm. Protect it by spending your money right here in the place you love — this holiday season, and all year long.

The Minnesota goodbye: Welcome the coming and speed the parting guest

The holidays are fast approaching and that means, in Minnesota, there’ll be some very long goodbyes.

Our family is notorious for extended fanfare when guests announce they’re leaving. First stop is the kitchen where we put together a goodie bag of extra treats for them to take home. Then as we go to get coats, we get Everyday the side-tracked with latest photos Etiquette the of little Suzie.

Then we’re in the Julie Frantz hallway, close to the door when we have one last story to share. Then finally out the door, but it doesn’t end there. We’ve been known to follow guests down the street, waving frantically, as they try to “get out of Dodge.”

Out of town guests The host determines when the guests can arrive and when they need to depart. As the guest, it is their responsibility to get themselves to the host’s front door at the time they have requested.

If the host has offered to have a meal at their arrival, because of possible delays, it’s best to have

a crock-pot style meal that can be served anytime. If no offer of dinner has been made, then the guests need to grab a bite to eat so they don’t arrive starving.

Hosts should have everything ready so that they can greet the guests at the door. This is important because it’s here, at the front door, where you set the stage for a warm welcome. Always have something hot and cold available to offer to drink and a snack if dinner is not served right away.

During the stay, a guest should conform to the schedule of the host and help clean up after themselves and also with family meals.

When the day of departure has been stated, then don’t delay and ask for another day. “Speed the parting.”

Holiday dinner guests The invitation should be sent far enough in advance that invitees can plan accordingly. The more formal the event, the further out the invitation should be sent. For holidays, it’s good practice to send invites four weeks in advance. The invitation should include: who is invited, what type of gathering it is, date, time, location, and R.S.V.P, which means “please respond.” Guests should respond within 24 hours either ‘yes’ or ‘no’; and if yes, only severe illness or death should keep them from that obligation.

Finding information on house plants

O

utdoor gardening is coming to an end, and our thoughts turn to house plants. I am blessed with rubber plants, heartleaf philodendron, shefera and many others, that provide my “greenâ€? therapy during the winter months.

Two years ago, a friend of mine started me down a path that I had never traveled when she gave me an orchid plant for my birthday. Orchids had always intimidated me, so I avoided them. But my friend’s gift forced me out of my comfort zone.

Not knowing anything about orchids, I needed help and I dove into print and online research.

My timing was very fortuitous.

About the time that I started researching, my orchid began to show signs of distress. I found a good resource that exists for information

on not only orchids but any house plant. This one stop resource is part of the University of Minnesota extension website, located at: http://www.

There is information on how to grow Mary Fitch and care for a great variety of plants from African violets, cacti, growing citrus indoors, begonias and tropical ferns and palms and, of course, orchids.

Need to know about pests and diseases, this is the place. All of the site’s information helps in identifying the appropriate steps to take to address

the plant situation that may be in front of you.

I learned about a plant disease called odemia and the effects that it has on plants. I believe that over the years my house plants have suffered from this and I never knew what to do. I also was reminded that most all house plants can absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen which beneďŹ ts our air quality.

Now, let’s get back to the orchids.

A link from the extension site took me to details on orchid care that addressed my issue. Based on the information, I was able to rule out any disease or insect problem, which was a relief. My orchid had outgrown its pot, and had started to grow over the edge. It was time to repot.

type that grows in the branches of tropical trees. Clinging to the trees provides support and moisture from the surface of the tree bark. These facts helped me decide to acquire the special orchard mix instead of using the regular potting soil I had around the house. I avoided a big mistake that could have been costly.

Former state champ takes Cougar wrestling helm after coach passes away

Tim Matheson, former state champion for Centennial, is the new Cougar head wrestling coach, following the death of Steve Peterson. “This is hard on everybody.

The wrestling community is always a big family so it

really affects everybody,� said Matheson, who found out in October he’d be asked to take over as head coach when Peterson’s situation became grave.

Peterson, who passed away of brain cancer at age 35 on Nov. 10, had been head coach for two years after nine years as an assistant.

The wrestling community, along with the business community, turned out in large numbers for the wake on Nov. 16 and funeral services Nov. 17 in the gymnasium of Chisago Lakes High School, his alma mater.

Peterson worked for the family business, Peterson Companies.

“People waited in line three hours at the wake,� Matheson said. “At least half the gym at Chisago Lakes was fi lled up for the funeral. A lot of graduates came back for it.

That shows what kind of person Steve was. He affected a lot of people.�

Matheson, whose hiring was announced by activities

director Brian Hegseth, was state champion at 152 pounds in 2005 for the Cougars. He wrestled four seasons for Minnesota State-Mankato.

While working as supply chain manager for a beverage company, he has been an assistant coach for six years, serving with Peterson.

Cougar girls hockey is 4-0 after winning duel of unbeatens The Centennial girls hockey team is 4-0 after scoring 24 goals in backto-back lopsided wins, then pulling out a 5-4 win over Eagan in a duel of unbeaten teams.

The Cougars, ranked No. 6 in Class 2A, topped Robbinsdale Armstrong/ Cooper 11-0 on Saturday, Nov. 18, and Osseo/Park Center 13-3 on Tuesday, Nov. 21. In their opener Nov. 11, they beat Class A top-ranked Breck 5-3. “The 4-0 start is nice. We’re doing

a good job of playing as a team and continually getting better each day,� coach Kristina King said. “We’ve had a large number of contributors which helps immensely. Breck and Eagan were both good teams.�

Against Eagan (5-1) at home Saturday, Nov. 25 the Cougars gave up three power-play goals but prevailed anyway.

period. Linser assisted on two goals. “Eagan put our team to the test and we’re grateful to have pulled out with a win,� King said. “Their power play took it to us, and penalty kill is something we’re focusing on, along with being more disciplined, and not getting penalties.�

‘Fake news’ experts explain rise in misinformation trend

Click, like, share—it takes only a few seconds to contribute to the spread of fake news on the internet. By now, most people have heard the term “fake news,” which has gained new popularity in the last couple years.

A joint presentation by information literacy expert Lindsay Matts-Benson and Hamline University political science professor David Schultz delved into the causes of the fake news phenomenon at the Stillwater Public Library Nov. 13. The event was sponsored by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) in partnership with the Stillwater Public Library.

Fake news was roughly defined by “60 Minutes” producer Michael Radutzky as stories that are provably false, have an enormous traction and are consumed by millions of people.

“Fake news is deliberately misleading,” Matts-Benson elaborated. “What fake news is not is facts or opinions that challenge or contradict your belief system. It is not usually an entire media organization. And it’s not something that if you just think it isn’t true or you don’t want to believe it, you just can’t make it fake news.”

Fake news is created for monetary reasons or political or commercial gain, Matts-Benson explained. “People can publish wrong information all the time, but there has to be this tenet of maliciousness … to make it fake news.”

It is easier than ever to create fake news, thanks to “bots” or automated post generators, and various methods of audio and visual manipulation.

Matts-Benson has two “million-dollar words” that complicate the issue: algorithmic bias and content promotion.

When a person shops for something online, suddenly they’ll notice they see ads for similar products on every website they visit. This is algorithmic bias—sites such as Facebook and Google track the things they are looking at, and try to show you similar things in hopes they’ll bite. This works not only for commercial products, but also for the type of news they’re are interested in. People’s online lives begin to inhabit an isolated bubble that supports only their own views, whether the content that comes into it is true or not.

Content promotion is when companies or organizations pay to have their content appear prominently in search results. Anyone can pay to have the top answer to particular sets of search

terms whether or not the answer is true.

“Google is not neutral,” Matts-Benson said. “It tracks pieces of information about you unless you turn off all that information when you’re doing a Google search, and even then it will still find as many little pieces of information as possible.”

David Schultz is a professor of political science at Hamline University and often serves as a local and national news consultant in election and political matters.

Looking back at the history of the press, Schultz shared that when the U.S. first became independent, no one expected journalism to be impartial.

Pamphlets and newsletters were printed and distributed by individuals such as Benjamin Franklin, who were free to print their own opinions, and shared them with like-minded people.

It wasn’t until media companies grew into nationwide sources of information that they tried to maximize their revenue by appealing to as many people as possible—and the best way to do that was to keep all of the content as politically middle-of-the-road as possible.

This led to what Schultz called “the Walter Cronkite era,” when the famous anchor ended every story with his iconic phrase, “And that’s the way it is.”

“The idea of an objective free press telling it like it is … that was a brief, brief, window in American history,” Schultz said. “That window opened and closed, and we probably aren’t going to see it again for a long, long time.”

That said, large media companies are subject to their own biases based on the wide consolidation of ownership in the media business—while this isn’t quite the same as “fake news,” it definitely has an effect on the public’s perception of the news.

“It’s not about liberal versus conservative bias,” Schultz said. “It’s about a bias that’s built in to produce news that will make money.”

Sharing fake news can be socially divisive, but it can also have much more harmful effects, Matts-Benson said.

In the wake of the Sandy Hook school shooting, a conspiracy theory that the shooting never really happened began, because no murders were reported by the local police department that year.

In reality, the incident was coded as a mass shooting rather than murders, which made it appear as if no murders had been committed. Those who shared this information did not bother to investigate the truth. As a result,

there is a group of people who believe the shooting never happened, and who have harassed the grieving parents of deceased Sandy Hook students.

Ways to avoid spreading fake news “The only way there’s going to be a solution is if we as citizens make an effort to share information well, and evaluate that information,” Matts-Benson said.

The first step is take a closer look at who is writing the content that you see.

“Is it a scientist on climate change, or is it a lobbyist on climate change? Is that lobbyist is a scientist? If they are a scientist and lobbyist, what could be influencing that? You have to figure out what type of authority a person has.”

Another thing to look for is the date and time when articles are published— to make sure the information is not old, or that it hasn’t been revised altogether.

Openness to exploring opinions that differ from your own is also a better starting point for improving communication across political lines, which have become so calcified in recent years that

Schultz said marrying outside of the family political party is thought to be as controversial as marrying outside of religion or race once was.

“Beliefs are important, but should also be challenged regularly,” Matts-Benson said. “If there’s this belief that you hold so to the core, and the news around you might be challenging that, let it be challenged … Think about the bubble of information you might be in, and try to investigate things more.”

The Lino Lakes Public Safety Department-Fire Division held a live fire training Saturday, Nov. 18. The home, located at 7911 Lake Drive in Lino Lakes, had been vacant for a number of years and the family wanted the home demolished. Thirty Lino Lakes personnel participated in the training. Seven teams of three firefighters trained inside the structure in live fire conditions and each team had at least two training scenarios. Students at CMS are stirring up something sweet

Pop Tart, Graham Cracker, Kandy Kane, Stretch, Grimsly Krumkake, Bink, Caramel, Marsha Mallow, Cookie, Miss Take and Kit and Kat are some of the many characters stirring up a sweet performance for audiences this week.

Around 45 students at Centennial Middle School (CMS) will put on “Candy Land” Wednesday, Nov. 29 through Saturday, Dec. 2. Each year Laurie Tangren and Kara Mundale, who have been co-directors for 17 years, brainstorm dozens of play ideas.

“Laurie found it and said I had to read this one and that I would love it. I, in all honesty, had some really good giggles,” Mundale said. “It’s that super-campy, cheesy, phony kind of humor. The show is really cute.”

Once every three years, Mundale and Tangren choose a melodrama, which is a sensational dramatic piece with exaggerated and often stereotyped characters along with exciting events to appeal to emotions.

The play, authored by Kevin Stone, is set in the Mega-Bit Candy Company where Graham Cracker is searching for his true love, Candy Cane. Meanwhile, the villain Grimsley Krumkake poses as a vat inspector with his sidekick Bink, and tries to take over the world beginning with Mega Bite Candy Company. Along the way many additional characters are introduced, such as Cookie the Clown who is preparing to host a tour of school children and Pop Tart, who is in charge of stirring the chocolate.

“The students are creative, lively and full of good energy,” Mundale explained. “We start rehearsals at the end of September and we perform (at) the beginning of December and it always amazes me that they can pull it together in a pretty quick hurry. I love working with the kids and seeing how much they grow and change in such a short period of time.”

This is eighth-grader Avery Emmer’s first production with CMS; however, she has done some theater and improv with community groups. “I felt like I needed to take a bigger step and do a full-length show,” she said.

Emmer plays Kandy Kane, who she described as “kind of clueless and simple-minded.”

Eighth-grader Peter Mundale has been in all of the CMS productions for the past three years. He really enjoys this show because of its dramatic and comedic nature.

“I am one of those people that loves the corny jokes,” he said. “I enjoy seeing my friends in a different stage of how I see them in school.”

Peter plays Pop Tart, who he described as a “fatherly worker at the Mega Bites Candy Company.” The most challenging part about the play, Peter said, is not laughing on stage.

An important aspect of melodramas is that the audience plays a vital role in the performance. There will be two girls who will hold up signs throughout the performance encouraging the audience to react to scenes by “awwwing, booing, hissing or cheering.”

In addition, the audience is also encouraged to sing along to classic songs such as “Lollipop.” Not knowing the lyrics is not an excuse, however, because they will be listed in the program.

Peter recommends the show because, “It has all the jokes we love. It is a very family-friendly play, has good interaction and it’s great for all ages. I don’t think there is a person alive who wouldn’t enjoy it.”

ENDURANCE FITNESS: Recognized for fundraising efforts internationally FROM PAGE 1

“We thought it would be a fun way to get our members together, do something that we love (work out), have fun and raise money for a good cause going into the holiday season,” said Endurance Fitness Communications Manager Correne Johnson. “It’s our way to give back. We have had such great support from the community since we opened.”

As of last week, $492,392, enough money for 1,189 water pumps, was raised globally for the cause. Endurance Fitness was third among gyms recognized their fundraising efforts, raising $3,197.

Endurance Fitness of MN, located in the Northway Shopping Center in Lexington, opened its doors in March. The gym is one of the 17,500 partners in 100 countries around the world licensed to carry Les Mills workouts.

Mills is a retired athlete who represented New Zealand at the Olympic Games and British Empire and Commonwealth Games for over two decades in the late 1950s until the early 1970s. His son Phillip Mills founded Les Mills International.

Since mid-October, Endurance Fitness of MN has raised money through private donations from instructors and its members. As a way to have some fun, and as a last push to raise money, the gym held a daylong event on Saturday, Nov. 18, where both members and nonmembers were invited to participate in seven free Les Mills classes. Participants were asked for freewill donations and the instructors donated their time.

“We decided since we are a Les Mills gym and we have a lot of classes, to make it a big event and have a lot of fun with members and community members,” Johnson said. “It was a way for us to get involved in something outside of us, where we could make a difference and say thank you to the community for (its) support.”

Participants could complete as many or as few classes as they wanted; however, there were prizes given out to those who completed all of the classes.

Ali Goepfert, of Lino Lakes, has been with the gym since shortly after it opened. She is good friends with Endurance Fitness owner Tina Carlson and had previously worked out with her at another gym. She joined not only because she knew a lot of people at the gym, but because she is a firm believer in supporting small businesses.

“It (Work out for Water) is more than just working out. Obviously, we are a little crazy about working out,” she said. “We can’t say no to a good workout, but for me it’s something bigger than that; it is raising money for a good cause.”

Goepfert shared the event on social media and, in addition to donating herself, encouraged other people to donate. She planned on participating in all of the day’s classes as the day’s energy level was high.

“Sometimes I will do two classes in a row and usually I am exhausted, but today we have had three classes so far and I am not exhausted because there are so many people in here and everybody is encouraging each other,” she said.

Wendie Taylor, of Circle Pines, has been with the gym since it opened. Her husband and children are also members. Taylor convinced 10 of her friends to check out the event and donate to the cause.

“Any type of mission work is close to my heart; I’ve always had a passion for it,” she said. “When this came up, it was a great opportunity to raise money for a good cause and bring people here who I hadn’t had a chance to get here.”

Even though the participants left the gym that day feeling rather sore, all of them felt they had made a difference.

in his camo pajamas. “He didn’t picture himself going to college. He never had that plan,” Kris explained.

Barry added, “It was his calling. He wanted to serve.”

At the age of 17, with permission from his parents, Jake signed up for the Army, took the entrance exam and chose to go into the infantry. A couple of months after high school graduation, Jake left for three months of training at Fort Benning in Georgia.

After completion, he was sent to the U.S. Army base in Hohenfels, Germany, where he has been stationed ever since. He now serves as a Spc. (specialist) representing the 173rd Airborne Infantry Brigade Combat Team.

Each company in the Army, made up of roughly 100 people, selects who it feels is its best soldier to compete in the Best Warrior Competition. Jake was selected to represent his company at the base competition. “That’s an honor in itself,” Barry noted.“They select someone who they feel is very squared away, someone who is very good at their job.”

The competition test candidates’ soldier skills, endurance, fortitude and resourcefulness as well as intellectual and problem-solving capabilities. The competition includes tasks such as a physical fitness and written test, marksmanship, land navigation, chemical defense and medical tasks.

Jake won the base level competition and advanced to a regional competition where he was up against soldiers from other bases within a certain region/ command. He then moved on to compete against soldiers from every base throughout Europe and Africa. He won this level and was awarded the U.S. Army Europe Soldier of the Year title.

In an interview with an Army publication, Jake said, “As a whole the week was pretty crazy. This competition was very intense, the physical parts were pretty demanding, but I truly enjoyed doing all the tasks and drills, all the challenges; they are part of my profession.”

The Europe Command is one of 11 regions/commands worldwide in the Army. The top soldiers and noncommissioned officers (NCO) of each command compete against each other for Soldier of the Year and NCO of the year.

All 22 Best Warriors are brought to a base near Washington, D.C. to compete and also participate in Army events in the area. After six days of competition and running the Army 10-miler, the Best Warriors were announced at a formal luncheon Oct. 9, where Jake received honorable mention with Barry and Kris in attendance.

While in the military, Jake has also earned an Expert Infantry Badge (EIB) and Army Commendation Medal.

“All you want for your children is for them to be the very best people and find a way to serve,” Kris said. Barry added, “His maturity is unbelievable.

He figures out what he needs to do and he is excelling at everything he does.

We couldn’t be more proud.”

Jake Henriksen completes another challenge in the Best Warrior competition. The competition tests candidates’ soldier skills, endurance, fortitude and resourcefulness as well as intellectual and problem-solving capabilities.

At-risk youth experience ‘first’ Thanksgiving dinner Thanksgiving is a day to give thanks, and Operation No Limits wants to give thanks for the at-risk youth it serves. Four separate dinners were prepared by the volunteers and Operation No Limits kids.

Teaching life skills, such as cooking, is one of the missions of the organization.

Volunteers worked with every kid and made an entire Thanksgiving dinner from scratch. The homemade dinner included: turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, sweet potato praline casserole, green bean casserole, collard greens, cranberries, pie crusts, pumpkin pie filling and homemade whipped cream.

Approximately 125 at-risk youth participated in the festivities. The volunteers were invited to share the dinner with the youth. To most people, Thanksgiving is a yearly tradition. For many of the kids, this was

their first Thanksgiving dinner.

At dinner, the kids came up with the idea of saying what they are thankful for; one said, "I’m thankful that you took the time to come be with us today, even more than the meal." Another said, "This is the best Thanksgiving dinner I’ve ever had, I’ve never had homemade stuffing, sweet potato casserole or cranberries, they were great." Another said, "I can’t wait to cook like this for my mom next year."

The Operation No Limits kids and volunteers gained more from this experience than could have been anticipated. Operation No Limits runs solely on donations and volunteers.

Power of Centennial fully funds 2 causes

LINO LAKES — The Power of Centennial (POC) meeting on Nov. 14 at Living Waters Lutheran Church stood out from previous meetings because a vote to determine which causes to fund never actually took place.

Thanks to a generous donation from a member, the group was able to fund both programs under consideration: a day of service for high school seniors, and a summer enrichment program.

POC, a subcommittee of the Centennial Area Education Foundation (CAEF), meets twice a year to vote on where it would like its dollars to go within the community.

Members meet in November and May and commit to giving $50 at each meeting.

All of the dollars raised are given as grants meant to support education in the Centennial area.

The group currently has 38 active members, and around 17 of them attended the recent meeting. Members’

donations raised $1,400.

The two options to consider included Senior Service Day and a neighborhood summer enrichment program.

Centennial High School will host Senior Service Day on April 26, where approximately 500 high school seniors will participate in service projects. The purpose is for students to gain experience in public service and practice problemsolving while connecting with others.

An amount of $500 was requested to help fund supplies, T-shirts for seniors and transportation.

The second option was to support a summer enrichment program for qualifying low-income students in specific neighborhoods. The drop-in program, which serves over 100 students (K-5), runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

“Over 20 years ago when I started getting involved with our ministry team, we were aware of the low-income areas and it seemed like, from an outsider’s point of

view, these folks were getting blamed when anything went wrong in the community,” Lynn Rossiter explained.

“Our church (Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Circle Pines) found there were no programs for these kids because every other program required them to register by a certain deadline, come up with money by a certain time and get the kids to the site.”

Rossiter noted that since the program’s inception, volunteers have been told by teachers the kids who are in the program now are ready to settle back into structure at the beginning of the school year versus taking a month or two to get back into the swing of things.

Between $500 and $1,000 was requested to help fund field trip and guest speaker fees. “It would help us provide cultural, social and educational enrichment experiences that are not normally available to lowerincome children,” she said.

Upon realizing that both causes could be fully funded if there was an additional $100 in the pool of money,

three-year member Donnell Hansen decided to donate an additional $100. Therefore, no vote was taken and both causes received the full amount requested.

“The support from CAEF will help us support students with transportation, supplies and T-shirts as they represent Centennial on Senior Service Day,” said CHS Principal Tom Breuning. “The service day is a great way for our students to give back to their communities.”

Rossiter added, “Thanks to the generosity of my fellow POC members, 100-plus local, at-risk children will benefit this summer.”

The idea for the fundraising event arose from similar organizations in the area that combined members’ donations to make a difference in the community.

“Power of Centennial allows community members to come together to support those people and programs in our district that give so much of their time and talents to our students,” said POC Co-Chair Amy Minear. “Members have been surprised by all the

great programs happening in our area and are excited to support them. Many of our members have gone on to volunteer for some of these programs as well. POC builds awareness and helps make these community programs possible.”

Some past POC grant recipients include: the PowerPack program, Operation No Limits, Creativity Festival, creative seating, TEEN Force and the Lunch Energize Achieve Participate (LEAP) program.

CAEF is accepting grant applications for its annual grant cycle through Dec. 15 for causes that support education within the Centennial Community.

CAEF’s main fundraising event is its annual Gala, scheduled on April 7, 2018.

The next POC will be held in May 2018.

If Thanksgiving Day wasn’t pleasant enough, sunny and 44º, Friday I topped out at 59º while the airport hit 60º. It was one of the most unremarkable Thanksgiving Day holidays if you had to travel, as the pleasant weather persisted into the weekend. The unseasonable mild weather extended into the work week. We’re still looking for our first significant snowfall.

Right now it looks a little ways off, at least a couple weeks.

New zoning amendment will allow construction of asphalt plant

The Columbus City Council decided at its Nov. 20 meeting to approve a zoning amendment that would allow construction of an asphalt plant in the light industrial district.

The council voted 4-1, with Mayor Dave Povolny voting against the amendment. Povolny said he thought that the matter could have been investigated more thoroughly by a special commission composed of a combination of people who did and did not support the plant’s

construction. He regretted the amount of misinformation that was spread through the community while this topic was under discussion by city officials.

Jesse Preiner, a member of the Planning Commission, presented his report the council, but shared that he did not believe the construction of an asphalt plant was right for Columbus.

He also felt that there was a lack of communication between the Planning Commission and City Council during the course of discussion on this topic.

He was confused by the mayor’s suggestion that a special commission

should have been arranged, since the Planning Commission was already looking at the proposal.

“We should have had a meeting every week for the last year to discuss putting a blacktop factory in the middle of a freeway district when we already have that over in Lino Lakes,” Preiner said.

This amendment was written after the asphalt company Bituminous Roadways, Inc. applied to construct a new facility on Freeway Drive.

Now that the city has made it permissible to build a plant in the desired location, it will consider the

company’s application.

The move has met with resistance from many residents in the community. The crowd became disorderly after the Council’s decision. The mayor called for them to be removed.

“We would love to leave because there’s so much slime in this room, we’ll slide right on out,” said one attendee.

• An officer took a report of theft from motor vehicle in the 800 block of Pine Street Nov. 15. A laptop was taken. The investigation is ongoing.

8 Officers responded to a report of a male with a juvenile warrant Nov. 16. Officers arrested and transported the juvenile to Anoka County Secure (ACS).

• Officers stopped a vehicle for speeding in the 1300 block of I-35W Nov. 18. The driver was found to be a juvenile with an instruction permit. The juvenile was issued a citation and released to parents on the scene.

• An officer stopped a 29-year-old male for speeding in the 8000 block of I-35E Nov. 18. The male was arrested and booked in the Anoka County Jail for third-degree DWI, second-degree refusal, driving after revocation, speeding, small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

• A resident reported two suspicious

males came looking for someone who didn’t live at the resident’s house in the 7500 block of Leonard Avenue Nov. 18. An officer made contact with the males, who were identified as church missionaries following up on a referral.

• Officers responded to a report of a vehicle in the ditch in the area of Centerville Road and Ash Street Nov. 18. The driver was arrested a booked into jail for DWI. • Officers responded to a report of a possible drunk driver in the 7500 block of Lake Drive Nov. 19. Officers stopped the vehicle and the driver was arrested and booked into jail for second-degree DWI. • An officer stopped a 51-year-old male for speeding in the 1300 block of I-35W Nov. 19. The male was arrested and booked into the Anoka County Jail for third-degree DWI, 0.08 or more and speeding.

POLICE REPORTS The Centennial Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • Officers mediated a neighborhood dispute in the 20 block of East Road in Circle Pines Nov. 17.

• Officers stopped a vehicle for an equipment violation in the area of Lexington Avenue and Woodland Road in Lexington Nov. 18. Officers found the driver to be intoxicated and the driver was ultimately arrested and released with a citation.

• Officers received a phone call regarding a theft that occurred in the 200 block of East Golden Lake Circle in Circle Pines Nov. 17.

Officers are currently looking into leads.

• While assisting officers on the scene of a crash (9500 block of Lexington Avenue in Lexington) Nov. 18, an adult male driver failed to yield to a parked emergency vehicle. The driver was subsequently stopped

and cited for the offense.

The Lino Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • Officers responded to a house fi re in the 400 block of Andall Street Nov. 14. Upon arrival, Lino Lakes Police and Fire, along with mutual aid, suppressed the fi re.

• Officers responded to a report of goats running in the roadway in the 6900 block of Lake Drive Nov. 14. Officers located the goat and the owner placed it back in the pen.

• An officer responded to assist the Minnesota State Patrol with a single-vehicle accident in the 1800 block of I-35W Nov. 14. An adult male was arrested by the State Patrol.

• Officers responded to a call of a possible personal injury accident in the 6200 block of I-35E Nov. 14. The driver of the vehicle was transported to the hospital by ambulance.
