Granny’s Closet still needs more Angels to come forward this holiday season to shop for its Angel Program. The Angel Program provided gifts to over 1,000 clients last year, handing out more than 3,000 presents.

Angel Program fills need during holiday season

Granny’s Closet is in need of approximately 50 more Angels to step up this holiday season for its Angel Program.

Granny’s Closet is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve quality of life for both seniors and adults with disabilities by partnering with community members and agencies in Anoka and Sherburne counties.

It all began in 1998, when founder Linda Harris reached out to a senior center to ask for a couple of seniors she could provide clothing to. She was provided a list of 44 names, all of whom had their own Christmas wishes. Harris, a real estate agent, was overwhelmed at first but reached out to her fellow real

estate agents who answered the call and helped fulfill all of the Christmas wishes.

Within a couple of years, Harris realized the need didn’t stop after the holiday season. Granny’s Closet expanded to fulfill needs year-round by collecting donations (clothing, personal care and household items) for those who qualify for assistance in one of the two counties the organization serves.

The Angel Program has grown to be the organization’s largest event of the year. Here’s how it works: With the help of their case manager or residential facility coordinator, seniors and disabled adults fill out a wish list. The lists are then sent to Granny’s; Granny’s then works to match the wishes to Angels, or community members who anonymously

purchase and wrap the presents.

“Christmas so often focuses on kids … but everybody loves to receive a Christmas gift.

So many of the people that we serve are completely secluded.

We have so many clients who are still independent enough to live on their own, but they are not able to get out frequently or they have outlived their friends and family,” Granny’s Closet President Wendy Dahlen, a former Lino Lakes resident, explained.

“It’s a little bit of that Christmas magic. Everyone remembers what it was like when they were little … We are helping the end of that spectrum, too.”

This will be the first Veterans Day in over a decade that Terry Dolney won’t fill the role of commander for the Sons of The American Legion (SAL) based out of American Legion Post 566 in Lino Lakes.

Dolney, a resident of Lino Lakes, joined SAL 15 years ago after his sister encouraged him to sign up. At the time, he explained the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) down the road from him was getting ready to close.

“We lived in the neighborhood and we were looking for something to do,” he explained.

Dolney is not a veteran himself, but is surrounded by them in his family. His grandfather, sister and brother-in-law all served in the military. He also has many nieces and nephews that have served in the military.

When he first joined SAL, he filled the role of adjutant for a few months. When the previous commander resigned, he took over and has held the rank ever since. Each year, SAL members conduct elections and members nominate who they want to fill what role.

Dolney is credited with steadily growing the local chapter’s membership for the past 15 years.

“It was a very small group … Now it is a large group, we have almost 100 members,” he explained.

Over the years, Dolney says he has enjoyed “doing stuff for the community.” In addition to the monthly meetings, SAL raises funds and

below or above that. Dahlen recalled a specific example of a senior who asked for a pair or socks. On the other end of the spectrum, a gentleman requested an Instant Pot, which his shopper was willing to purchase for him.

Last year was the first time the Angel Program provided gifts to over 1,000 clients, handing out more than 3,000 presents.

Circle Pines resident Janelle Satt can’t quite remember how long she has been an Angel with the program, but guesses it has been a few years.

“I’ve definitely made sure that this is a staple in my holiday routine,” she said. “Doing something local always feels really good. There are a lot of larger-name, larger-scale donations that everyone asks for this time of year, but this feels very local, and it feels like a group of people that often get neglected.”

She typically shops for a couple of people each year, and sometimes will pick up a couple more recipients if the program needs her to. This year she is shopping for one person who requested a deck of cards, yearly calendar, hat and mittens. The other person she is shopping for asked for body wash, winter hat, mittens, blanket and a word search/puzzle book.

“It is really so humbling to see these individuals’ requests for a holiday gift.

They are so very basic. It doesn’t take much of a monetary contribution on my behalf, and I know I’m making a big difference,” Satt said. “Unfortunately, that is just a sector of the public that doesn’t get the love and attention they need as they are aging.”

POLICE REPORTS The Lino Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • An officer stopped a vehicle for speeding in the 700 block of Main Street Oct. 25. The driver, who had no driver’s license or insurance, was charged and the vehicle was towed.

• An officer responded to a vehicle-versus-deer accident in the 1400 block of Ash Street Oct. 25. The officer documented the accident and provided the driver information for insurance.

A possession permit was issued to an individual who wanted the deer.

• Officers responded to a report of a juvenile female who had fled from the juvenile shelter in the 7500 block of Fourth Avenue Oct. 25. Officers subsequently located the female, who was arrested and booked at a secure facility.

• A community service officer responded to a stalled semi in the roadway near Lake Drive and Apollo Drive Oct. 25. The semi was out of gas. A mechanic responded to assist the driver of the truck.

• An officer and fire personnel responded to a report of a gas odor in the area of a school in the 300 block of Elm Street Oct. 25. The area was checked and no problems were found. The police department received several other calls from neighboring residents and businesses who also reported the odor. It was later learned the odor was coming from a business in another jurisdiction.

• A resident reported identity theft in the 900 block of Lantern Lane Oct. 25. The incident is under investigation.

• Officers responded to a report of a person going through mailboxes in the area of Patti Drive and Lilac Street Oct. 25. The involved vehicle was located and stopped. The officers learned the driver worked for a newspaper and was picking up unused paper boxes. The complainant verified the person had not been seen going into mailboxes but was seen outside the vehicle.

• An officer and fire personnel responded to a residence on a report of a fire alarm sounding in the 6300 block of Hodgson Road Oct. 25. The resident had fallen asleep with the oven on, and burnt food caused the fire alarm to sound.

The residence was ventilated and no further assistance was needed.

• An officer spoke with a caller who provided MDAN information regarding a possible threat risk at two businesses in the 7700 block of 20th Avenue Oct. 25. The information was passed on to other officers and a neighboring jurisdiction, as one of the involved businesses was in another city.

• An officer took a criminal sexual conduct report Oct. 26. The case is under investigation.

• Officers responded to assist the Minnesota State Patrol on I-35E near Main Street for a personal injury crash Oct. 26. The State Patrol handled the investigation.

• An officer handled a phone call regarding hunting regulations Oct. 27. The officer answered the caller’s questions.

Officers responded to an elementary school in the 500 block of Birch Street for a suspicious male pulling door handles Oct. 27. The male was identified as a custodian and no problems were found.

An officer took a report of juveniles ringing doorbells of homes in the 2100 block of Balsam Way Oct. 28. The complainant wanted a report on file and police to be aware.

Officers responded to a report of juveniles inside a closed construction zone in the 6000 block of Hodgson Road Oct. 28. The site supervisor did not want any charges pressed, but the juveniles’ parents were contacted.

Officers responded to a report of a fire on a picnic table in the 700 block of Town Center Parkway Oct. 28. Officers were able to extinguish the fire before fire personnel arrived. The investigation is ongoing.

Officers responded to a report of suspicious activity in the 1400 block of Sherman Lake Road Oct. 29. A house had been toilet papered. Officers checked the area but were unable to locate the involved individuals.

An officer responded to a two-vehicle property damage crash in the 6700 block of Hodgson Road Oct. 29. One vehicle was towed from the scene and a driver was issued a citation for multiple offenses.

Officers were made aware of a possible suicidal juvenile via Snapchat Oct. 29. After investigation, the juvenile was identified and found safe.

An officer handled a motor vehicle tampering incident in the 700 block of Apollo Drive Oct. 29.

The investigation is ongoing.

Officers responded to a report of a disorderly female in a local business in the 6500 block of Ware Road Oct. 29. The female was issued a citation for disorderly conduct and left.

An officer observed suspicious people near a vehicle at a closed business in the 2200 block of Cedar Street Oct. 30. Through investigation, drugs and alcohol were seized. One party was issued a citation, and they left the area.

An officer responded to a delayed report of an

altercation between a motorist and a bicyclist that occurred near Ash Street and Centerville Road Oct. 30. All involved parties were advised of current laws, and there were no further problems.

• An officer stopped a vehicle for speeding in the 600 block of Osborne Road Oct. 30. During the stop, the vehicle fled, but another agency subsequently located the vehicle abandoned; it was towed and impounded. The investigation is ongoing.

• A community service officer was dispatched to a report of a deceased owl hanging from a tree in the 6600 block of White Birch Court Oct. 31. The owl was located and disposed of.

• Officers responded to a report of suspicious activity on Gladstone Drive Oct. 31. The investigation is ongoing.

The Centennial Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • A domestic assault was reported in Lexington Nov. 1.

• Officers were dispatched to a theft report in the 0 block of Village Parkway in Circle Pines Oct. 26.

Officers documented the incident.

• A resident in the 1600 block of Heritage Street in Centerville reported attempted fraud Oct. 26.

• Police were dispatched to the 9100 block of South Highway Drive in Lexington for a robbery Oct. 27.

The case is under investigation.

• Officers were dispatched to a suspicious activity report in the 300 block of Evergreen Lane in Circle Pines Oct. 27. Officers subsequently learned that the person was distributing election materials.

• An officer located a tennis racket and case lying in the roadway in the 4100 block of Lovell Road in Lexington Oct. 28. The items were taken to the police department for safekeeping.

• Extra patrol was requested in the area of Edge Drive and North Road in Circle Pines Oct. 28.

• Police took a phone call regarding a neighborhood dispute in the 1700 block of Center Street in Centerville Oct. 28.

• Suspicious activity was reported in the 0 block of Oak Leaf Lane in Circle Pines Oct. 28.

The Centennial Fire District was dispatched to a grass fire at 5:23 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2 on East Golden Lake Lane in Circle Pines, about 300 feet off of the roadway. Due to windy conditions and the fire spreading quickly, mutual aid was requested from the Spring Lake Blaine Mounds View and Lino Lakes fire departments. Thankfully, there wasn’t much damage

Taking an inventory of our habits and where we can improve can be difficult. Questioning a spouse or good friend would give us a good start.

For parents, remember it starts when children are very young.

INFLATION IS AFFECTING every one of us with higher costs, primarily gasoline and heating fuel.

But the grocery store prices are also shocking.

I think every one of us finally realizes we are paying for the price excess government spending.

It’s very difficult to survive when the rate of inflation continues over 8%.

Americans are going to have to be concerned about interest rates on debt. That’s going to climb as we go on. That will undoubtedly slow the sale of homes and perhaps even limit the size of homes that people can afford to finance.

Over the last five years it is estimated that mortgages have gone up 80%.

In many cases, people won’t be able to afford homes, which we have always considered important in this country. We have a large part of our population owning homes which helps in growing their net worth.

It’s not just home loans that will cost people more, but credit cards, auto loans and student loans are all part of the debt mix.

The question we don’t know is how is this going to be for the holiday shopping mix?

The country needs a balanced budget. If it were balanced, these interest rates would not have been going up as fast.

We need more cooperation with Congress, the president and the feds. The way we are going is a viscous circle and we have a huge problem in controlling this inflation.

These give us the ultimate human freedom … the power to choose, to respond, to change.”

I THINK IT is dangerous in America when the far left and the far right try to reset our country with our economy and our way of life.

I receive information from Hillsdale College and an article by Michael Rectenwald in an issue of their Imprimis described the economy goals of the great reset as “capitalism with Chinese characteristics—a two-tiered economy with profitable monopoly and the state on top and socialism for the majority below.”

We need balance in our government and we need to respect the way our Constitution developed a way of life that has been successful when there is a large middle class.

We are now in a major cultural shift and some of these ideals and values appear to be eroding.

The Hillsdale College report indicated that during the COVID-19 pandemic, support for socialism among 16 to 23 year olds jumped to 49% and socialism also increased in popularity among all ages.

That’s another reason why we need to be conscious of what’s going on in the classrooms.

Preparing students for promising future

entennial schools are bustling! More than 6,500 students are learning at Centennial during a more “normal” school year compared to the past few years. Through the district’s strategic planning process last year, desired daily experiences were defined by our stakeholders– students, families and staff. The Movers & core values, mission and Shakers direction to Jeff Holmberg an even better future was also defined.

We know it all comes down to: Connecting. Achieving.

Preparing. Centennial prides itself on the connections with our communities.

From the ice cream social at the beginning of the school year to conferences in the fall, our teachers form strong relationships with families, with the focus on the student.

Together, both the teacher and the family support student learning. The partnership with the broader community is also important and plays a role in supporting youth.

This year, we have opened our doors once again to volunteers ready to assist in our schools, through reading with students, making photocopies, and supporting our teachers and staff.

Another example of partnership in education reaches beyond the classroom. The high school’s collaboration with BERMO, a manufacturing company located in our community, opened their doors to students interested in manufacturing careers. Through a field trip, students learned outside the classroom by touring the company and hearing from staff first-hand of career paths and job opportunities in the trades. Together, we are preparing students for a promising future.

Centennial also prides itself on the co-curricular opportunities the district provides to students. I

invite you to support our students by attending a game, a competitive match, or performance where you can see the talent of our students.

These social opportunities, leadership, and team-building opportunities go hand in hand with academic excellence in the classroom.

The Centennial Community Education Brochure of offerings will be available in December. I invite you to attend a class in our schools, a tour with friends, or meet new ones in the community, hone your skills or learn something new. The program offers something for everyone.

In Centennial we have much to be proud of and more to look forward to in the future! I invite you to participate in supporting the youth of our communities. We know through collaboration and partnership, we can do great things together.

Anoka County participating in Operation Green Light The Anoka County Board of Commissioners will take part in Operation Green Light for Veterans, Nov. 7-13. This new initiative by the National Association of Counties prompts counties to light their buildings green during the first full week of November to show veterans that they are seen, appreciated and supported.

Anoka County supports the nearly 20,000 veterans who call Anoka County

home in various ways –– through the county Veteran Services Office, veterans court and other initiatives and events that focus on veterans in the area.

For Operation Green Light, the west side of the Government Center, along Third Avenue, will have green lighting in both the north and south entrances.

“Operation Green Light is a simple way to remind veterans that we are here for them,” said Scott

‘My husband never knew I was a Rosie’ Connie Hammar celebrated her 98th birthday earlier this year.

She is one of the small number of remaining Rosie the Riveters in the U.S. “At the time, I never knew I was a Rosie,” Hammar said. “I thought it was just a saying, like ‘GI Joe.’” Rosie the Riveter is a symbol of all women who worked Connie Hammar in the war industries during World War II. These women sometimes took entirely new jobs, replacing the male workers who joined the military.

Connie Hammar, of St. Croix Falls, grew up in Grantsburg, Wisconsin, where her father ran an auto repair shop.

During the Depression, people were unable to pay for their repairs, so the family closed shop and moved to nearby Hill Crest Resort, where they managed vacation cabins.

“Times were really tough then,” Hammar said. “People were fixing weeds and eating them to fill the stomachs of their kids because they didn’t have money to buy food.”

When Hammar was 17 years old, she remembers hearing Adolf Hitler on the radio. “I didn’t understand him, but his voice was so severe sounding,” she said.

“I also remember when President Roosevelt announced we were at war,” she said. “It was a Sunday morning at nine ‘o clock. It was Pearl Harbor, and I remember thinking that I never heard of Pearl Harbor before. I will never forget that.”

When the war started, Hammar said the resort business went down the drain with the war. “People didn’t have tires or gas. In fact, my dad borrowed his tires to a friend so he could go to a funeral in Illinois.”

After she graduated in 1942, her brother Warren was already working at the Douglas Airplane Company in California. He encouraged the family to join him to work in the airline industry. Their father moved first.

Hammar and her mother followed.

Hammar applied for work at Northrup Aircraft in Hawthorne, California.

“The first thing they did when I applied at Northrup was a physical, and then I had to sign something that said I couldn’t talk about my work,” Hammar said. “I went to aircraft school to learn about blueprinting, and the day my teacher was gone, these people came and said they needed riveters.

They took me, and my teacher was upset when he came back because I was gone.”

Hammar was put to work bucking nacelles — casings for the engines of the P-61 Black Widow night fighter.

Hammar said the plant and the parking lot were camouflaged to look like something else from the air.

She said one day when she arrived at work, there were a lot of planes parked under camouflage. They were gone the next day.

“I never spoke about them to anyone,” said Hammar. “I didn’t want to ask any questions, because I didn’t want to get into trouble.”

Hammar said she worked at the Northrup Aircraft plant from about 1942 to 1943.

According to history.com, more than 310,000 women worked in the U.S. aircraft industry in 1943, making up 65 percent of the industry’s total workforce.

Hammar said her family returned to Wisconsin before 1945, opening a bar/ restaurant near Siren. She said on the day the war ended, all bars were closed, so the family traveled to St. Croix Falls to celebrate with others.

Hammar met her husband, Eugene Gray, on a train.

“When we met on the train, I was going north to Minneapolis and he was going to Ohio,” Hammar said.

“During the trip, the Platte River flooded, so we stayed on the train for a week. He was on leave from the Army and about to ship out to the European theater — 3rd Armored Division.”

The couple wrote letters to each other and eventually married. They have two daughters — Judy and Susan.

While raising their two daughters, Hammar decided to go back to work.

She got a job at a sewing factory in the theater building in St. Croix Falls.

“We made women’s dresses and sewed on New York labels,” she said.

“Then we made children’s robes.”

Hammar also worked at Plastics, a factory in Dresser, Wisconsin, where she made parts for sewing machines.

In 1987, Gray passed away suddenly from a heart attack.

“I decided to retire early and gave my notice at Plastics and that weekend, my husband died,” she said. “We never had one day together of retirement. My oldest daughter lived in Las Vegas and my other daughter was visiting her friend in Kansas City. I had no family here when he died.”

Hammar has lived in St. Croix Falls for over 60 years. She still lives independently in her home and still drives her car.

“I recently renewed my driver’s license, and it’s good for eight more years,” she laughed. “I thought they were going to make me take a driving test, but they just checked my eyesight and I gave them money.”

Hammar said she doesn’t drive into the Twin Cities anymore.

“I quit when the virus started,” she said. “Up until then, I was still driving to my daughter’s house in Inver Grove Heights.”

Hammar recalled that after the war, she and her husband never talked about their war experiences.

“He knew I worked in an airplane factory and that we were building bombers that never got finished in time,” Hammar said. “But I never told my husband that I was a Rosie.”

Caring for the other end of the leash The loss of a pet can be heartbreaking

wrong to feel sad, mad, upset or even a little relieved after your pet has gone through a sickness and doesn’t have to suffer anymore. She finds it especially crucial to talk about the grief and to not give a time limit as to when you are going to start feeling better or when you “stop grieving” because grief itself doesn’t work like that, she says.

The AERC recommends, when you feel the time is right, to consider holding a memorial service or ritual of some type. Consider planting a tree, creating a photo album, holding a ceremony in the local dog park, writing down cherished memories, or making a donation to a local animal organization.

Getting a clay paw done after the loss of a pet is a great way to memorialize the animal’s life and showcase just how important they were to the owner.

Mary Mattson, who has attended the group for a year now, moderates the Facebook group. She began attending after losing both of her dogs just four months apart.

Mattson lost her first Bichon Frise in February 2021 and attended her first group session two days later. She lost her second Bichon just four months later and had recently lost her dad a few months before in 2020.

Mattson considers herself very lucky to have friends and family who understand that her dogs were her closest companions and like her kids. However, she felt that her friends and family could only say and do so much.

“I felt like I could speak freely in group. There is something different emotionally for me being around people who know what I was going through and I felt so normal with all the group members. It was very validating and safe for me to express any emotion,” Mattson said.

Coming home to a four-legged friend with a wagging tail, cold nose and total acceptance can be the best part of someone’s day. Animals can easily become a human’s best friend, but one day, that beloved pet will no longer be a constant and it can be difficult to cope with the loss and grief.

Animal Emergency & Referral Center (AERC) of Minnesota offers a pet loss support group that meets at their Oakdale location on the fourth Tuesday of every month from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The group is co-facilitated by Colleen Crockford, a licensed social worker, and Heidi Brenegan, the chief marketing officer. The two of them are there to listen and understand, however, the group is peer facilitated, meaning most of the interactions are between group members to use each other as resources.

“Sometimes they need to talk to people who right now understand how they’re feeling and who have been where they’ve been. That’s what we can assure people of, ” Brenegan said.

Brenegan says society, in general, hasn’t really come to a place where it can accept that pet loss is a significant loss. This can make it a lot harder to grieve, she explains, because people have to set aside their grief to go on with the rest of their lives because it’s not socially acceptable to do it any other way.

“I think the biggest thing for people is when they feel like their grief isn’t validated by people in their lives.

We call that disenfranchised grief, ” Brenegan said.

This may play out by people telling a grieving pet owner, “Well it’s just a cat” or “Why don’t you get another dog? ” or if someone is taking some time off of work because they are grieving the loss of a pet and it is looked down upon.

Brenegan had the idea to start up the group when she realized that there were very few resources in the Twin Cities to support grieving pet owners. In 2012, Brenegan’s dreams came to life along with a Facebook group that has grown to about 256 members. AERC also offers a 24/7 compassion care line that clients can call anytime of the day if they need support.

Right now, the group meets virtually, but plans to add an in person component once their new Oakdale facility is open.

St. Mark quilters use talents to raise funds for students in Tanzania

Members of the quilters group at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Circle Pines have put their talents to good use and will host a quilt raffle Saturday, Nov. 12.

The raffle is now in its sixth year.

It is all in an effort to raise funds to support St. Mark’s sister congregation in Iringa, Tanzania. It’s a partnership that dates back to the early 2000s.

Anita Pouchnik, a 40-year member of the church, said that the St. Paul Area Synod, which oversees the ministry, reached

out to St. Mark’s almost 20 years ago to let them know about scholarship needs. In Tanzania, many of the students’ educations are only funded for the early years. Scholarships are needed so they can continue their education in junior and senior high.

Each year, the church aims to sponsor 10 students by providing scholarships, and commits to supporting each student for six years. Over the years, the church has tried various types of fundraisers, including dinners and bake sales, but when those weren’t raising enough funds anymore, they had to come up with a fresh idea.

Pouchnik, who has been a member of the church’s quilters group that has been around since the ’80s, suggested the quilters get involved. For each of the past six years, the quilters have put in countless hours to make a quilt for a raffle.

“It’s an important global mission. We always say we are St. Mark, but we are also part of Lexington and Circle Pines. We are part of Anoka County. We are part of Minnesota. We are part of the United States, and we are part of the world. So, we have to stretch out our arms,” Pouchnik explained.

Three quilters put well over 100 hours into this year’s quilt.

The batik, all-cotton quilt, featuring a pattern known as “Radiant Suns,” exhibits vibrant colors. Pouchnik said the pattern is meant to represent the glorious sunrises and sunsets of Tanzania. Cheryl Collard, a 50-year member of the church, said the colors remind her of the villages of Tanzania.

The quilt measures 70 by 90 inches, which will fit a queensize bed (with some extra to drape over the edges) or cover the top of a king-size mattress.

Raffle tickets for the quilt will be sold for $10 each. Tickets can be purchased online at stmarkcp. org ahead of time or at the Bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 12. The group hopes to sell at least 100 tickets in order to raise $1,000.

“We gift our personal time to raise money to turn around and give it to other organizations,” he said.

This year, when elections came up, Dolney was once again nominated for the commander role, but he decided it was time to step back.

“I chose to step down to let somebody else take over. I think I’ve done as much as I can do,” he said. “It was time to change hands.”

Dolney is not planning on leaving the organization anytime soon and remains an active member.

“Some of the other officers have been there with me since day one. We brought it up together and made it what it was,” he said.

Former Lino Lakes Mayor Jeff Reinert, the new SAL commander, is appreciative of all Dolney did. “I want to thank Terry for all his efforts to lead and help build our membership to almost 100 members,” Reinert said.

“As the new commander for the Sons of The American Legion, I hope to follow in Terry’s footsteps and do as good of a job as he did.””

High school seniors go above and beyond community service

Three friends — Shivam Vashishtha, Shaurya Sehgal and Benjamin Wiggenhorn — have founded two nonprofits.

The trio, all seniors at Mounds View High School, created a website called Mathular. It consists of mathematical documentation that can be used by middle school, high school, or college students.

“We all personally felt that there was no specific website or textbook that had animations or graphics about math; it was all theoretical stuff,” Vashishtha said.

“This summer, we wanted to do something or build a platform that has the concepts from every single math class. Our emphasis was on more visual stuff, and that’s what we tried to incorporate on our website.”

Vashishtha said the website is being used by many students at Mounds View High School. Members of the trio hope to extend their reach to middle schools, high schools and colleges in neighboring cities.

“At our school, we surveyed to find out the resources used by students to study and learn math concepts outside of school,” Vashishtha said.

“Most participants said that they’re dependent on books because there aren’t any websites that contain interactive information. They also said that websites would enhance the accessibility of obtaining information.”

“Once we launched the website, we went back to the same people who responded to the survey and asked them about their genuine reviews of the content that we had published,” Vashishtha said. “Nearly every student

claimed that the website was useful in terms of clarifying certain concepts taught in class.”

The second nonprofit business, WebComp, aims to build websites for local businesses at no cost.

“We wanted to do a community service by reaching out to local businesses that have been

around for a couple of years that don’t have websites and can’t reach the mass of the local community,” Vashishtha said.

Wiggenhorn said they reached out to approximately 10 local shops that either didn’t have a website or had outdated interfaces, and asked them whether they’d like to have a renovated layout.

They found their first client, Computronix, a local computer store based in Circle Pines.

“We’ve recently redesigned their website, and the owner, Justin, was pleased with his decision to have given the contract to us,” Vashishtha said.

“Basically, we are entrepreneurs, but we are doing it more volunteer-style because we’re not charging them for this,” Wiggenhorn added. “A local business might not have enough money because of COVID, so we decided we’d help renovate their website to make their business more modern and do it for free. As high schoolers, we need the volunteer time and to just help them out in general.”

All three said the hard work they did in the summer taught them a lot about business and collaborating to make sure everything was done on time.

“I learned a lot by building these websites, working with others, setting up times and learning the skills by making Mathular,” Sehgal said. “All of the learning I’ve done is what I value the most out of this.”

The number of small-game hunters in Minnesota continues to decline along a long-term trendline. The number of small-game licenses sold in 2021 was 233,901, down 4% from the previous year and 7% below the 10-year average.

Hunters who did pursue waterfowl, grouse and pheasants had success rates similar to the 10-year averages, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ hunter mail survey.

The survey covers estimated harvest and number of hunters for two dozen species. The survey asked small-game license buyers whether they hunted, what species they hunted and what their harvest numbers were. Using the 2021 survey results, the DNR estimates the following harvest and hunter numbers: • Canada goose – Harvest of 218,200 geese, down 13% from the 10-year average of 251,800 geese. There were 36,100 hunters, down 26% from the 10-year average of 48,800 hunters.

• Ducks – Harvest of 590,000 ducks, down 16% from the 10-year average of 702,800 ducks. There were 56,600 hunters, which was 21% below the 10year average of 71,900 hunters.

• Ruffed grouse – Harvest of 206,700 grouse, down 27% from the 10-year average of 281,900 grouse.

Approximately 57,300 hunters pursued grouse in 2021, 26% below the 10-year average of 77,900 hunters.

• Pheasants – Pheasant stamp sales (78,538 stamps) were 4% below the previous year’s sales but similar to the 10-year average of 78,873 stamps. Harvest was estimated at 210,300 roosters, which was slightly above the 10-year average of 200,400 roosters. There were 49,000 hunters, which was 18% below the 10-year average of 60,000 hunters.

Cougars stop Edina one foot short, advance with 14-7 win

Once, twice, then three times, all in the final 45 seconds, the Centennial Cougars stopped Edina at the one-yard line in their football playoff game Friday night. In fact, Edina was just one foot shy of the goal line on their last attempt, with six seconds left, as the Cougars escaped with a 14-7 win.

Centennial also halted Edina at the seven- and six-yard lines on their two previous drives to avert a second-round upset and advance to the state Class 6A quarterfinals. The No. 7 Cougars (8-2) will take on No. 2 ranked Rosemount (10-0) on Thursday, 7 p.m., in Stillwater.

A pair of two-yard touchdown runs by Marcus Whiting capped drives of about 70 yards each in the first half. Edina got a one-yard touchdown run by Brady Anderson in the second quarter, set up by pass plays. The 14-7 halftime score stood until the end.

Edina missed a short field goal late in the third period after the Cougars stopped a drive at the seven. In the fourth quarter, Edina had an apparent 51-yard touchdown pass nullified by a holding penalty. Finn McElroy then completed three passes to give the Hornets a first-and-goal at the five. The Cougars slammed the door and Josh Lee broke up a fourth-down pass in the end zone.

With :47 left, Edina (4-6) had first-and-goal at the one after McElroy, on a fourth-and-three from the 12, passed to Sonny Villegas, who was knocked out of bounds by Will Quick a yard short.

The Cougars got a big break as Edina was called for an illegal shift on first down. From the six, after two incompletions, McElroy hit Brian Mosolf at the one-yard-line. He was stopped there by Lance Nielsen.

Cougar quarterback Dylan Cummings pushed a couple feet on the final play to clinch it and a delirious Cougar celebration ensued, along with a trophy ceremony as the win gave them the championship of their four-team quadrant.

The Cougars had 241 yards rushing and none

passing. Maverick Harper, back from missing six games with an injury, gained 75 yards in 14 carries.

Cummings had 55 in nine carries and Whiting 49 in 11 carries.

McElroy completed 17 of 28 passes for 184 yards.

Anderson caught six passes for 90 yards and Villegas caught six for 42. Anderson rushed 12 times for 55 yards and Warpinski 13 times for 33 yards.

Cougar girls 4th at state CC meet; Nelson all-state

The Centennial girls had a banner state cross country meet Saturday with a fourth-place finish — highest in school history for boys or girls — and the school’s first all-stater in six years, Kylie Nelson.

“The girls placed fourth of 16 in the AAA meet behind three great (cross country) schools,” noted Eric Hotakainen, Cougar alum and longtime assistant coach. He added: “This outstanding performance caps off the season for a talented, driven group of girls who will return all five of their scoring runners next year.”

Wayzata was champion with 39

points, followed by Minnetonka 89, Mounds View 127, Centennial 156, and Prior Lake 174 in the top five, on the St. Olaf College course in Northfield.

Wayzata’s Abbey Nechanicky was champion in a state record 16:47.

The Cougars, under second-year head coach Ryan Evans, ran a consistent race, holding fourth place at both the mile and two mile splits and at the end. Running strong and smart, they made a huge jump from 15th place at state in 2021.

“We knew from the beginning of the summer that we had big goals and it was truly amazing to be able to reach them,” said Nelson. “I am so proud of how far we have come, from placing 15th last year to fourth this year. The

coaches were awesome with their training program and supporting us along the way.”

Nelson, a sophomore, placed 21st among 159 state qualifiers in 19:03, earning all-state status (top 25). She is the first CHS all-stater since Reed Kurak placed 16th in 2016.

“My goal was to run all-state,” Nelson said. “I did go back and forth with a couple girls throughout the race, but overall stayed in the same place.”

After Nelson were eighth-grader Abby Smith, 33rd in 19:17; junior co-captain Julia Zalewski, 53rd in a personal best 19:33; junior Abby Wood, 58th in 19:41; and freshman Anna Swanson, 74th in a personal best 19:51. Zalewski was 26 seconds

under her previous best from her eighth-grade season.

Senior co-captain Emma Magnuson was 94th in 20:15 and sophomore Miranda Sawvel 129th in 20:42. Also making the trip were two alternates, sophomore Annelise Offerdahl and seventh-grader and Annabelle Steinhoff.

The Cougars qualified for state as runner-up in Section 7AAA, where they tied Forest Lake but were relegated to second via the sixth-runner tie-breaker. At state, though, the Cougars finished seven places ahead of the Rangers.

With their top five runners all posting personal bests, the Centennial Cougars repeated as Section 7AAA cross country champions on Oct. 27, earning a trip to the state meet — where they did not have a good meet to quit on.

The Cougars edged two conference rivals for the section title at Anoka High School. The top three among eight teams were Centennial 63, Blaine 66, and Andover 70. River Santiago, Blaine junior, was champion in 16:02.

Senior captain Eli Berg led the Cougars, finishing third in 16:34.

Close behind were sophomore Alex Persing, sixth in 16:43, and senior Charles Bolkcom, seventh in 16:47. Also in the top five were senior Evan Pouliot, 17th in 17:00, and junior Jacob Podratz, 30th in 17:35. Each had a personal best by at least 20 seconds, Persing by 43 seconds.

“It takes motivation,” said Berg, “to push through the pain during the races, and dedication in the practices, to prepare us for these championship races. The great training program that Coach (Ryan) Evans has made for us has set us up for success.”

As for strategy, Berg noted, “We each knew which guys we had to beat. I made sure that my guys knew that they couldn’t let any Blaine or Andover runners pass them in the race.”

At state last Saturday, the Cougars finished last among 16 teams, as times were slower than at sectionals, albeit on a more challenging course at St. Olaf College. Berg was 56th (16:37), Bolkcom 80th (16:52), Persing 97th (17:02), Pouliot 121st (17:19), senior Kavan Johnson 141st (17:42), Podratz 149th (18:00) and Matt Washburn, 153rd (18:10).

“Even though it’s not the result we wanted,” said Eric Hotakainen, assistant coach, “the boys have a lot to be proud of, to compete in the state meet after back-to-back section wins.”

The Centennial Cougars are a state tournament team for the first time since 2010 after battling past Forest Lake 25-21, 25-21, 25-22 on Thursday evening for the Section 7AAAA championship.
