Janelle and Jim Willard's chili is taking them to the big leagues.

The Willards, who live in Circle Pines, have been winning teammates in cooking competitions for over a decade with BBQs and family's famed chili recipe.

We left Reverend Joseph Goiffon, Pastor of St. Genevieve church in Centerville from 1861 – 1891, eating moldy meat and navigating his way to St. Paul from the Canadian border. His autobiography continues with the following account: Sometime before sunset I saw houses in the distance and thought I had arrived at Crow-wing. Seeing a little creek with fine clear water, and a little plot of grass, I tied my horse by the neck with a slip knot so that the flies would not make him break loose and run away again…I glanced at my horse and saw him covered with blood, and immobile…he was not hurt, only being badly stung by the flies…and felt himself sinking into the swamp.

Hearing that Crow Wing was another five miles on, Goiffon left at a gallop and arrived at the home of “Mr. the Rev. Father Pierz,” only to find him out. He carried on to Belle Prairie on a Monday, having said Mass the previous day, simultaneously also having to nurse his horse through an unfortunate incident of eating too much corn. Goiffon finally arrived in St. Paul via St. Anthony, though he says nothing of his business in the city, nor much regarding his trip home with “Mr. Kittson.”

He praises the “good Metis” with whom he spends time, noting their reverence at services “even with the little discomforts” and “easy disposition” that allowed them to share cramped living quarters and provide unequalled hospitality.

Should a stranger arrive at their house, was he known or unknown, he would partake of their home and eat at their table; never was there a question of payment, even when the provisions were about out. As they lived by the hunt, the first of the house who was free would take two or three dogs in winter, and a horse, when there is no snow, and would go out, on the great prairie and kill a buffalo and bring it to the home, so all were happy and contented.

Given their sparse furnishings, the families ate on a buffalo hide or “Lapichineau,” in the order of patriarch to youngest. After, they lit pipes and told stories until the same buffalo hides became beds for the night.

The Metis…did not cultivate the earth. They lived, without worry, from day to day, hunting and fishing, and in their evident poverty, were the richest and the happiest of people. Never amongst them was there talk of mortgages or debts. If resources were not sufficient in one place, they establish themselves in another… game was abundant…they wasted nothing; taking only what was necessary, and conserving the rest for their children.

Goiffon speaks of the Canadian and American advancement on the area, as well as the heavily harvested wildlife for sale through the Hudson Bay company. There, he weaves the beginning of the Metis.

The young Canadiens [sic] who roamed through Manitoba…found themselves in a vast country, where one could so easily find a living without working, maried [sic] the young Indien [sic] women who were strong and robust, sweet of disposition and did all the work, leaving to their husband, only the trouble of hunting and bringing back to the lodges the game they had killed. Of these two strong races were born numerous children, who became the best travelers and the most skillful hunters in the world. They called

them the Metis.

Modern scholars recognize the same distinction Goiffon noted between those originating from the Red River Valley and those who did not. The uncapitalized métis are any children of Anglo-European/American Indian unions during this period, while the capitalized Métis descend mainly from French and Ojibwe or Cree who had a homeland in the Red River Settlement. These peoples, as well as the Crees and Chippewas, maintained a constant state of war with the Dakota, or Sioux nations.

Next week Goiffon relates a buffalo hunt he witnessed, during the last summer before traveling south to Centerville in 1860-61, which will conclude our exploration of his years prior to his work at St. Genevieve’s church.

“We perfected our recipes and we've won a lot of small contests along the way and as a result we were invited to the World Food Championships,” said Jim. The Willards will compete in the chili cook-off category against 30 other qualified entrants. The World Food Championships has competition in 10 different categories and draws entrants from 16 different countries.

Janelle and Jim will be entering a family recipe which they have spiced up. “It is my mom's recipe that we grew up with,” said Janelle. “It's one you'd find in the Catholic church cookbook. We added one extra spice to give it a kick.” It makes for a “sweet and spicy” chili.

Janelle works as an executive assistant at the University of Minnesota and always left her co-workers far behind in the workplace chili cook-off.

Her co-workers are happy the U of M's chili cook-off this year happens to be while she is at the World Food Championships.

“Everybody is excited I won't be competing,” said Janelle.

The Willards have often won at various food competitions around the Midwest. If they don't place first, they are usually at least second or third place.

Jim is a retired Chief Technical Officer of CieloStar. Barbecuing has been a hobby of his, and he is excited he and his teammate, his wife of 17 years, have been chosen for the World Food Championships.

“We love cooking,” said Jim.

Digging should start soon for DigniCare HUGO — City Council approved the site plan and planned unit development for DigniCare LLC as well as the ordinance approving rezoning for the senior living facility at its Oct. 19 meeting.

The facility will have 32 units with 18 assisted living and 14 memory care suites on a 3.3-acre parcel south of 130th Street and east of Highway 61.

A public hearing on the proposal was held Oct. 8 during the Planning Commission meeting. Six residents spoke who lived near the development; most were concerned with the landscaping buffer with Beaver Ponds and construction traffic on Fenway Avenue. Commission members asked the developer to work with staff to address those concerns.

last week, aware he should have attended the Planning Commission meeting. Tom Landsberger wanted attention brought to the traffic issue on 125th Street at Highway 61. If the access to the DigniCare facility is right-in/rightout from 127th, vehicles will come down Fenway Avenue to access southbound Highway 61, he said.

"There can be 10 cars lined up now to get on Highway 61; loading it is Fox Meadows (development)," he told council.

"I don't know if there's anything you can do, but we could alleviate that by going both ways on 127th."

City Administrator Bryan Bear said traffic is expected to be minimal with a minimal

number of visitors to the facility. He added that almost every access point on Highway 61 has trouble with traffic.

Developer Brian Winges, who developed the first Comforts of Home south of the Hugo Post Office, said DigniCare's parking lot will only have 15 to 20 spots. It's unusual to use all the parking, he said.

He described the facility as "almost nursing-level care." Residents do not drive and staff will number four or five people.

Winge told council the site was "a perfect spot for us to operate." He hopes to start digging the foundation yet this fall and continue construction through winter.

“It's hilarious,” said Quinlan. “It's a great satire.”

The characters in the show come from such a broad range of backgrounds that Quinlan feels the show addresses “really relevant social messages.” One student is pressured by her parents to be “Little Miss Perfect,” while another has parents who don't even show up to the spelling bee, as her mother is on a quest to India and her father works too much.

GOLDEN LAKE: Taking education outdoors FROM PAGE 1

Golden Lake Elementary took tips from Taylors Falls Elementary, which built an outdoor classroom in 2011.

The Taylor’s Falls Lions Club, businesses and parents came together to build the structure, said Taylor’s Falls Elementary teacher Laura Greene.

The Golden Lake classroom will be used for a variety of educational activities. Teachers will be able to take their students outdoors on fall and spring days to give their students an “aesthetic change.”

Golden Lake also plans to train teachers in environmental science and implement the outdoors into students’ school days.

“The vision has no boundaries,” said Gerst. As principal, he is excited to give his students the option to engage in the outdoors the school is centered around. Golden Lake is built on a wetlands area and students already look out of their classrooms and see a plethora of nature and wildlife. The outdoor classroom will bring Golden Lake’s 380 students even closer to a nature-rich education.

“We wanted to have a project be something all the students could enjoy,” said Gerst.

The Golden Lake PTA even got its students outdoors to

help raise funds for the classroom, a fitting alternative to selling chocolate or wrapping paper. On Oct. 9 each student took part in the annual “Golden Lake Go-Around,” a 2-mile walk around nearby Golden Lake with their class. Students collected walk pledges totaling about $9,500 to go toward the outdoor classroom.

Principal Gerst is currently working with Home Depot on developing four different construction proposals for the outdoor classroom. All four of the options have a roof, but not all options would have walls.

The four blueprint options will be presented to the PTA in November and the PTA will decide which blueprint to use based on cost and the response the PTA receives from the community for donations and volunteerism.

The PTA hopes to break ground in the spring of 2016.

Golden Lake will be looking for donations of construction materials to make the outdoor classroom a reality.

The PTA is also looking for volunteers with construction and contracting experience to build the classroom. For more information contact Gerst at 763-792-5900.

Pause to reflect T WAS JUST a few weeks ago in October when my brother Ray called me after a thorough two days of testing and consultation at Mayo Clinic. The doctors told him, “You don’t have to come back.”

Some may consider that good news. In the case of my brother, it was not. They said, “Your heart and kidneys in your 82-year-old body are deteriorating and you have from two weeks to six months to live.”

Two days after that call, Kathy and I drove to Fertile, Minn. where Ray and his wife, Nancy, and most of their family live. Ray was adopted when he was five years by the Ed and Marty Christian About the old family. As many of you know, I was adopted by the Dan and Edythe Town Johnson family in White Bear Gene Johnson Lake following the death of our parents, leaving nine children homeless in Olmsted County, Minn.

It was a couple days of tears and laughter as we reminisced about the years we have had together since our family was first reunited in 1951. We talked about Ray’s experience in the Marines in Korea. We talked about the various businesses he developed and ran successfully.

The bottom line that he shared over and over again was the blessing that his family of spouse, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren has been.

Maybe that’s not surprising. The point is it wasn’t material things. God has favored their family and they are thankful for their 59 years of marriage. They believe in God’s promises of eternal life, as I do, and that means we can celebrate life, as short as it really is.

I’M NOT SURE how you might be celebrating this Thanksgiving. Is there someone special that has left your life? Whether it is from an illness, separation or whatever, we all need to reflect in positive thoughts on all the ways God has favored us.

When we lift up prayers of Thanksgiving, we need to be specific. This will help us understand all the more how favored we have been.

Each of us has been favored in some extraordinary ways. Be thankful for our veterans, some who have sacrificed their life for the freedoms in our country and around the world. Many veterans have been returning home after some very long wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many have had their bodies impaired from various kinds of explosives and other war hazards.

When was the last time you thanked your employer for your job…or the school bus driver or athletic coaches for their involvement in your family’s life…or the grocery manager for keeping a good supply of food available…or the person who prepares your meals…and so on?

Maybe you would like to make a list of things you are thankful for and talk about it with your family.

Thanksgiving is a good time for that, but really it should be a regular part of your life’s expressions of gratitude.

I understand the turkey population is restored after the serious flu epidemics and the shortages will not be as serious as once thought. Happy Thanksgiving.

I AM ALWAYS fascinated by statistics and I know they can be manipulated to tell whatever story you want. Here are a few I have spotted.

According to Gallup, 75 percent of Americans think our government is corrupt.

Currently there are six million American people in poverty.

Under our current president, our national debt has gone from 9 trillion to approximately 20 trillion.

Heart attack on a plate? ’Tis the season… t’s certainly the lump of coal among all the presents!

Research shows that the death rate from heart attack and stroke tends to spike around the holiday season. The numbers include both fatal and non-fatal heart attacks, as well as a less serious, alcohol-induced condition called “holiday heart syndrome” that causes the heart to beat irregMovers and ularly.

Holidays aren’t so joyful for the Shakers heart One study from Dr. Kurt Belk the University of California-San Diego shows cardiac deaths rise nearly 5% on Dec 25, Dec. 26, and Jan. 1. That’s an estimated 2,000 extra deaths annually. What’s even more surprising about the research is the role of food, particularly overeating and heavy meals during the holidays. It is the top trigger, more dangerous than emotional stress, colder weather, changes in routines and skipping out on regular exercise.

The science of how overeating affects your heart You have to consider the science.

When you eat a lot of food at once, your stomach expands with your digestive system requiring more blood. If you have coronary

heart disease or are at risk for it, overeating (a big Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner can top 5,000 calories) can have serious consequences. Triglycerides—a type of fat in the blood after a large meal—can cause coronary artery inflammation, commonly a prelude to a heart attack. Large amounts of food and alcohol can also cause the release of adrenaline-like substances that can cause a fatal abnormal heart rhythm.

Binge drinking during the holidays is also dangerous for the heart. When you drink in excess, alcohol can weaken the heart muscle and put you at greater risk for arrhythmias like atrial fibrillation.

Heart attack symptoms Recognizing the symptoms of a heart attack and getting immediate medical treatment is vital. One-third of people suffering a heart attack die before getting to the hospital. Here are the top signs of a heart attack, though these may vary between men and women and patient by patient.

• Pressure, tightness, pain, or a squeezing or aching sensation in your chest or arms that may spread to your neck, jaw or back • Nausea, indigestion, heartburn or abdominal pain • Shortness of breath • Cold sweat • Fatigue • Lightheadedness or sudden dizziness

A healthier (heart) holiday Planning is your best weapon against overeating during the holidays. Here are a few simple tips to help you and most of all, your heart.

• SNACK. Don’t go to a holiday party or sit down for a holiday meal famished. Eat a high-protein snack beforehand. Try peanuts or a couple slices of cheese to take the edge of your hunger.

• MAKE CAREFUL CHOICES. Watch what you eat. Did you know traditional eggnog is high in cholesterol, fat (20 grams) and calories (400)? It’s like eating two glazed doughnuts. Even green bean salad can be a top offender! Factor in the fried onion topping, butter, and cream, and you’ve got a dish with more than 750 calories per batch and more than 4,000 milligrams of sodium. That’s twice the daily limit recommended by the Centers for Disease Control.

• EXERCISE. Keep up with your regular exercise routines and consider increasing your schedule to burn off some of the extra holiday calories.

Another walk around the block can go a long way in terms of protecting your heart during the holidays Certainly we all love the delicious dishes and treats that come with holiday celebrations. The key is to enjoy in moderation, don’t over-indulge. Your heart will certainly be thankful that you did.

SCHOOL BRIEFS Holiday Bazaar gives Centennial bands a boost The Centennial Band Boosters gave band students a boost at its annual Holiday Bazaar Sun. Oct. 25. The Centennial Band Boosters, parents of Centennial High School and Middle School band students, have hosted the annual event for over 20 years. The bazaar, held at Centennial Middle School, attracted more than 70 vendors from across Minnesota and Wisconsin with a variety of goods such as jewelry, wooden crafts, knitted scarves, spice rubs, handmade puzzles, handbags, jam, salsa, fruit butters, art and much more. Proceeds from the event are used to purchase band uniforms, pay for competition entries and bring in guest musicians to teach band clinics. Band Boosters co-chairs Trish Olson and Deb Griffiths are searching for a new co-chair, as Olson will be retiring from her position soon. The 2016 Holiday Bazaar will be held Oct. 29.

Concert to raise funds for food shelves The Woodbury Chorus and Orchestra is coming to the Centennial School District and will present a free concert to help raise funds for the Powerpack weekend food program. The concert will take place on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 4 p.m. at the Centennial Middle School Auditorium. The performance will feature songs of praise in a variety of settings. The Woodbury Chorus and Orchestra is an all-volunteer group dedicated to helping food shelves through free-will offerings taken at their concerts. In partnership with the Centennial Community Food Shelf, the Powerpack program serves nearly 250 students in need per week by providing food items to help get them through the weekends or holidays.

CENTERVILLE — Within 10 years, area residents could have access to a completed multipurpose regional trail system that will link local and state trail systems and regional parks, as well as provide safe and convenient routes for nonmotorized traffic to cross the county.

Anoka County Park Planner Karen Blaska appeared before the Centerville City Council at its Oct. 14 meeting to present the county’s plans to complete a regional trail that includes segments within the city.

Blaska updated council on some of the details of the plan and asked for comments and a vote of support.

The Bunker-Chain of Lakes Regional Trail, as proposed, will be 14.5 miles long and pass through Blaine, Lino Lakes and Centerville.

It will connect Bunker Hills and Rice Creek Chain of Lakes.

The county already has 11.5 miles of the trail constructed, and is close to having a complete regional trail in the county, she said. Only three unfinished segments remain — all within the city of Blaine.

The trail will also connect to several schools and many local parks and trails along the way. The connected schools include Blaine High School, Centennial Middle School, Blue Heron Elementary and Centerville Elementary. In addition, the trail will connect to the Johnsville Branch of the Anoka County Library, East Anoka County and Rice Creek North regional trails, Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Park Reserve and Chomonix Golf Course. Local parks along the trail include Laurie LaMotte Park in Centerville, Marshan Park in Lino

Lakes, Meadowbrook Park, Pioneer Park and the Jim Peterson Athletic Complex.

Eventually, the trail will have to cross I-35W. The trail will either be part of a proposed vehicle bridge over the freeway or a separate pedestrian bridge.

Blaska estimates that the three sections will cost $6 million to complete. She said she was offering the worst-case scenario and the rest of the trail would probably cost less and be economical. Funds are expected to come from the Metropolitan Council and other sources. Blaska said the county planned to look at the possibility of federal funding.

As council voted 3-1 to support the trail, Councilman Steve King opposed the plan saying, “I know everyone on the Parks and Recreation Committee are for something nice and I can see us spending this kind of money.

[Blaska] says it will be $6 million — it will be way more than that.” This is money that could go toward roads and bridges, he said.

The timing of the trail’s completion depends on developments near the trail. The segment between Radisson Road and Cloud Drive is expected to be complete by 2018.

Other sections may take from 10 to 15 years. When trail users will be able use the completed trail to cross over I-35W, however, is anyone’s guess.

For the moment, Blaska is touring the county, gathering public comments on the plan and presenting to local city councils to gather their comments and resolutions of support. Then it will be on to various committees, the county board and, finally, to the Metropolitan Council for approval.

Clothing drive for senior citizens Granny’s Closet will collect clothing and household donations for Anoka County senior citizens at the Circle Pines, Lexington and Lino Lakes city halls from Thanksgiving through Christmas. Items needed include new clothing of all sizes and colors, toiletries, paper products, laundry detergent, bedding and towels. Granny’s Closet is also looking for volunteers to “adopt” a senior citizen and fulfill a specific gift request by being a “Christmas Angel.” Granny’s Closet hopes to fulfill 400-500 gift requests this holiday season. Gifts typically cost around $25 and are collected at the Anoka Armory on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. Donate food, toys at Anoka County License centers and passport centers The Anoka County License and Passport Centers are conducting a nonperishable food drive and toy collection to kick off the holiday season. Food will be distributed to food shelves located in the communities in which the license and passport centers are located. Toys will be collected as part of the Toys for Tots program. The food drive runs Nov. 1-24 at all county license and passport centers. The Blaine License Center and the Blaine Passport Center are located at 10995 Club West Pkwy, Suite 700A and 700B and food donations will benefit Community Emergency Assistance.

Centennial Lakes Police Department Reported the following Incidents • A man was arrested after failing field sobriety tests in the 9000 block of Naples Street, Lexington, at 2:40 a.m. Oct. 11.

He was cited for third-degree DWI and released into the custody of his wife.

• The owner of Blue Collar BBQ reported that $300 of split hickory firewood was stolen on Oct. 11.

•Various items and prescription medications were stolen from a vehicle in the 7100 block of Ivy Ridge Lane on Oct. 26.

Adopted $32,410 in assessments for the NorthPointe development per the development agreement. Only seven of the lots will carry the $4,630 water, sanitary sewer and stormwater assessment charges forward; according to City Engineer Diane Hankee, the city has already been paid for 14 of the 21 lots.

Adopted $39,401 in assessments for the Talan Ridge development. There were three lots assessed for water, sanitary sewer and stormwater at costs ranging from $11,150.34 to $14,125.33.

Held a public hearing and the first reading of Ordinance 11-15 to vacate drainage and utility easements on two outlots in the NorthPointe development because they were dedicated in two separate plat filings. City Planner Katie Larsen said that creates “title issues” for lot sales. The easements were formalized in the 1st Addition as well as the 3rd Addition final plats and will remain intact under the 3rd Addition filing. No one spoke at the hearing.

Approved a 12-foot setback variance for the property owner of the residence at 6602 Pheasant Run to construct an attached garage. The required 40-foot setback is from the county’s right of way along Birch Street. The Planning Commission recommended approval of a 10-foot variance; the council granted an additional 2 feet after a request by the homeowner, who originally requested a 15-foot variance. Other garages along Birch Street have setbacks of between 30 and 40 feet, Community Development Intern Keith Dahl said.

Councilman Rob Rafferty said it would be an improvement to the area because currently the house has no garage.

Mayor Reinert said he was “pretty surprised that Planning and Zoning recommended approval of the variance, because we hardly ever approve variances in this town.”

Awarded the contract for Well No. 6 Pumphouse to low bidder Rice Lake Construction Group of Deerwood, Minnesota in the amount of $756,400.

The engineer’s estimate was $770,000.

Of the four bids received Oct. 21, two

were rejected as nonconforming; however, neither bid was lower than the one submitted by Rice Lake Construction.

The pumphouse will be constructed adjacent to Birch Park.

Approved payment No. 3 and final for Rum River Contracting for the city’s 2014 mill and overlay project. The final payment, $30,035.45, was paid out of the city’s Public Service – Streets budget.

Held a public hearing before adopting an assessment roll regarding $274.02 in weed abatement charges incurred in 2015. If not addressed, violations of the city’s weed/grass ordinance are taken care of by city public works employees and billed to the property owner.

Unpaid bills are certified to the county for collection along with next year’s property taxes. Ninety-nine percent of such violations are reported by neighbors, Community Development Director Michael Grochala said.

Held the second reading of Ordinance 09-15, amending city code Section 1101 Stormwater, Erosion and Sediment Control. Council voted 4-0 (Councilman Bill Kusterman was absent) to adopt the ordinance, which brings city requirements into consistency with new Rice Creek Watershed District (RCWD) rules. A summary of the new ordinance will be published, but a full copy is available for review at City Hall.

Awarded the contract for the Birch Street Wetland Grading Project to Olson’s Excavating Service of Forest Lake in the amount of $18,132.47. The creation of an on-site wetland area was part of the wetland mitigation plan for the city’s Birch Street and Centerville Road turn lane project adjacent to Fire Station No. 2. Four quotes were received from area earthwork companies; only one was below the engineer’s estimate of $20,000. The grading and restoration work should be completed

by Nov. 30, Hankee said, but it will be spring when RCWD inspects the plantings.

LINO LAKES CITY COUNCIL NOTES At its meeting Oct. 26, the Lino Lakes City Council took the following action: Authorized delinquent municipal water and sewer utility charges in the amount of $91,935.27 plus penalties and interest of 8 percent per annum to be certified to Anoka County for collection along with the 2015 property taxes payable in 2016.

Deferred approval of one item on the city expenditures list so it could be discussed in more detail at the council work session on Monday, Nov. 2. The item related to three quarters of billings submitted simultaneously for payment by the Centennial Fire District.

Renewed for 2016 a traffic safety grant from the Minnesota Office of Traffic Safety. The grant is renewable for up to four years. The grant program is intended to improve traffic safety through public education focused on prevention, evaluating data to develop intervention strategies, and traffic

enforcement. The grant pays for one officer’s salary and benefits ($105,000) plus certain court-related overtime costs and other expenses.

Received a Public Safety Department update from Deputy Director Kelly McCarthy. Mayor Jeff Reinert added that there will be a North Memorial Medical Center ambulance stationed at the city’s new South Station “from time to time,” improving response times for the south area of the city.

Adopted $167,245.60 in assessments for properties whose owners in 2015 requested connection to city utilities.

Assessments were: $131,313 for Gracewood Assisted Living at 675 Market Place Drive; $21,426 for Fiesta Cancun at 7090 21st Ave. S.; and $14,506 for a private residence at 7133 Sunrise Drive.

Adopted $219,212 in assessments for utility connections for 28 lots located within the Saddle Club development, per the development agreement.

NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS ESTABLISHING THE PINK RIBBON SYMBOL with the ribbons stating, "The National Cancer Institute annual budget is $1.8 billion, only 5 percent goes for cancer prevention. Help us wake up our legislators and America by wearing this ribbon."

The same year Evelyn Lauder, senior corporate vice president for the Estee Lauder company, and Self magazine editor Alexandra Penney teamed up to produce a pink ribbon. It was distributed at makeup counters all across the country. The company collected more than 200,000 pink ribbon petitions asking the U.S. government for increased funding for breast cancer research.

Although Lauder and Haley reached people on different levels, their goals were the same: To educate the public on the lack of funds allotted to

breast cancer research.

Pink ribbons are now seen all over and have become the uniting force for millions of women who are facing breast cancer or supporting someone with the disease. In 1996, Nancy Nick created a blue-and-pink ribbon to symbolize male breast cancer ribbons in honor of her late father. The ribbons remind others that breast cancer can affect men as well as women.

Although you can see waves of pink every October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, many people don their ribbons year-round. Great strides have been made with respect to breast cancer, but with about 225,000 new cases popping up each year in the United States alone, there is still work to be done.

She was a breast cancer survivor and came from a family of women who also fought the disease. She created peach-colored loops at home and then distributed the ribbons at her local grocery stores. Haley encouraged people to wear the ribbons and contact legislators to demand more funding for breast cancer research.

The pink ribbon has been synonymous with breast cancer for years.

Nowadays, people rarely think twice when they see pink ribbons, having grown accustomed to the pink ribbon and what it symbolizes.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month has been celebrated each year since 1985, and many other breast cancer awareness initiatives have been devised since then. While the pink ribbon may seem like it's been in use for just as long, it was actually established only about 20 years ago.

Ribbons have long symbolized something important. For decades, yellow ribbons have been used to alert others to soldiers at war or hostages that hadn't yet come home. People often tie yellow ribbons around trees at home until their service men and women came home safely.

During the height of HIV/AIDS activism and awareness, red ribbons were worn to symbolize support for those with the disease.
