Centennial puts new twist on a classic fairy tale BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR
Everyone knows the classic tale of “Cinderella” — boy meets girl, they fall in love and live happily ever after. Thirty-eight students at Centennial High School (CHS) are working their magic to put a new twist on the production to keep the audience entertained. “I don’t want to giveaway any secrets, but there are new characters who are more fully developed and new storylines,” said
Theater Director Mark Quinlan. “People will think they know it (the story), and then they will come and be surprised.” Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” is the new Broadway adaptation of the classic musical. The contemporary take on the classic tale features Rodgers and Hammerstein’s most beloved songs, including “In My Own Little Corner,” “Impossible/ It’s Possible” and “Ten Minutes Ago.” The show also has humor and many surprising twists along
the way. Originally presented on television in 1957 starring Julie Andrews, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” was re-made twice, first in 1965 and again in 1997. The original Broadway production opened in 2013. “It has charm and romance, of course, but its combined with new energy and humor,” Quinlan explained. A skeptic of the Shoreview Community Center built in 1990 has become its supporter as the city undertakes a large expansion to the waterpark, playground and fitness rooms. Shoreview Parks and Recreation Committee Chair Tom Lemke, a 30-year resident, has spent the last couple years overseeing the details of the Community Center’s planned expansion with the seven-member committee that makes recommendations to the City Council on all things outdoors and fun. Twenty-six years ago, he wouldn’t have imagined breaking ground with a golden shovel on an expansion to the city’s famed Community Center. “When we first built it, I thought it was a total waste of taxpayer dollars,” he remembered. But over the years, Lemke realized it put the city on the map. He was a salesman and when he noticed the Community Center had made the city well known, he was sold. “It is the best thing that has ever happened in the city,” Lemke said. A large expansion to the city’s claim to fame broke ground Oct. 23. “We have really outgrown what we have,” said committee member Athrea Hedrick. The expansion includes a 7,000-square-foot addition to the Tropics Indoor Waterpark. A new zero-depth splash pool and aquatic play structure will be part of the addition. Family changing rooms will increase from two to seven and locker rooms will be renovated. The Wave Cafe seating area will also be renovated and expanded. The Tropical Adventure Indoor Playground, added five years ago, will also be expanded. “The new playground will have a much enSEE COMMUNITY CENTER, PAGE 20
